Review: broadway up close’s “hudson theatre tour” – a theatrical odyssey through time.

hudson theatre tour

Planning a trip to the Big Apple in 2024? Embark on a theatrical odyssey through the heart of Broadway with Broadway Up Close’s “Hudson Theatre Tour”—a dazzling gem that has quickly become our all-time favorite tour in NYC over the past year. For passionate theater enthusiasts craving an intimate connection with The Hudson’s storied past, this experience is nothing short of enchanting. Guided by the dynamic Green Team Guides and the unparalleled Tim Dolan, this tour transcends the ordinary, offering a captivating journey into the soul of Broadway’s oldest theater. It’s not just a walk through time; it’s an immersive adventure that left an indelible mark on our New York City explorations.

The Hudson Theatre’s recent restoration in 2017 unfolds like a carefully crafted narrative. The tour offers a backstage pass to exclusive spaces within this iconic venue, shedding light on its meticulous restoration after narrowly escaping the brink of demolition.

Our journey Bagan amidst the hustle and bustle of Times Square in 2023 (during a KPOP group appearing on Good Morning America the day after Thanksgiving) back to 1903, a vibrant era that sets the stage for the enchanting stroll leading us to The Hudson Theatre. As we traverse the streets, echoes of bygone tales linger in the air—stories of tragedy, encounters with Adolph S. Ochs, and the legendary figures of pop culture and Broadway whose presence graced the theater’s stage over the past century.

The transition from the lively streets to the hushed corridors of an empty Broadway theater marks the opening of a captivating time capsule. In this theatrical silence, illuminated by the original lighting crafted by Louis Comfort Tiffany, The Hudson Theatre unveils its rich history with vivid details thanks to the fantastic guide we had in Tim Dolan. It’s a rare and enchanting experience that seamlessly transcends time, allowing us to witness the layers of stories woven into the fabric of Broadway’s oldest theater.

Tim Dolan, Owner of Broadway Up Close Tours and Gifts (Of Boardwalk Empire Fame as well), elevates the experience with his vast knowledge and passion. Seriously, I am not sure anyone loves what they created more than the creator, Tim, of this tour. His love of the subject material is easy to feel as he pours information out in a way that it almost transports you back to the times he is talking about. Armed with iPads filled with rare photographs and videos, the tour seamlessly weaves together the past and present of The Hudson Theatre, creating a rich tapestry of anecdotes and insights.

Having attended two shows at The Hudson in 2023, including Alex Edelman’s “Just for Us” and the Revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” we had the opportunity to speak with some of the performers for both shows and they gush over how gorgeous the space is and how rich its history is as they add to its prestige. An hour spent with Tim Dolan behind the scenes adds a personal touch, making the tour an unforgettable journey and a place that feels underappreciated in New York City. It’s our favorite theater in NYC for a reason.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of experiencing - Staged: The Museum Tour for People Who Love Theater at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The guide, Evan Levy, gave an excellent tour! She was knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. She guided us through the museum introducing us to works of art from the beginnings of the history of theater during Greek and Roman times, to eventually showing us American paintings created during the mid 20th century. As an actor, I found the experience exciting, informative and enjoyable. Although the tour was well structured, Evan was also responsive to the interests of the people attending. She skillfully addressed the questions of both the adults and children within the group. I highly recommend this tour. Read more Written February 5, 2024

Its entire construction is centered around its users' thoughts, preferences, and needs. The model it uses for show "critique" emphasizes positivity. In a sense, "Even if you didn't like this, who might?" That is a great way to look at the world. It's a positive company with a useful service. Thank you! Read more Written June 1, 2020

Hudson Theatre

Hudson Theatre

The Hudson Theatre first opened on October 19, 1903, with Cousin Kate  starring Ethel Barrymore. Although the firm of J. B. McElfatrick & Son first drew up the architectural design of the theatre in 1902, the firm of Israels & Harder ultimately took over and completed the project. The venue was built for theatrical producer Henry B. Harris, who managed the theatre until his death as a passenger on the RMS Titanic in 1912.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the building was also used as for CBS Radio broadcasts when it wasn't being used for theatrical productions. NBC purchased the property in 1950, converting it into a permanent television studio. The venue housed The Tonight Show  from 1954 to 1959.

Over the next few decades, under the ownership of developer Abraham Hirschfeld, the building was used for theatrical productions (1960 to 1968), as an adult movie house (from 1974), and as the Savoy rock club (from 1980). The Hudson Theatre was awarded New York landmark status in 1987.

Millennium & Copthorne Hotels purchased the Hudson in 1995 as a part of the surrounding luxury hotel known as the Millennium Broadway and used as a business conference center and auditorium. During this time, it was additionally used as a stand-up comedy venue for Comedy Central broadcasts.

In 2015, Ambassador Theatre Group purchased the venue as its second official Broadway venue, following the Lyric Theatre . After fully shutting down and undergoing a major renovation, the Hudson reopened in 2017 with a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical Sunday in the Park with George,  starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Since the theatre first opened in 1903 and reopened from scratch in 2017, the Hudson is simultaneously Broadway's oldest and newest theatre.

Few works of drama loom as large in the national psyche as  Death of a Salesman , Arthur Miller’s seminal and searing deconstruction of the American Dream. It went on to win six Tony Awards including Best Play, and was also honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. The play has enjoyed four previous Broadway revivals, three of which won the Tony Award for Best Revival.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

hudson theatre tour

Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly "ungentlemanly" fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.

This festival will celebrate playwrights in venues across the mid-Hudson Valley

The nonprofits in the Hudson Valley are always looking to bring new and exciting opportunities to our region.

When embarking on a creative journey that has never been done in our area, many logistical pieces need to be taken into account while keeping the momentum going for the big event.

More than a year ago, The New Deal Creative Arts Center in Hyde Park got to work on the area's inaugural Hudson Valley Theatre Festival. Running from May 3 through May 5, 2024, the event will feature readings of 12 new works from playwrights across the country and beyond in non-traditional theater spaces throughout Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster counties.

The mission of The Hudson Valley Theatre Festival is to celebrate and support new theatrical works by providing opportunity and accessibility to established and emerging local, national, and international playwrights. The 12 works for this year’s event were chosen from more than 100 submissions from all over the world, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and as far as New Zealand. Then, the submissions were read by a panel of 60 actors, directors, producers, writers, and educators from coast to coast.

Teresa Gasparini, the New Deal Creative Arts Center’s executive director, is at the helm of this year’s event. Gasparini stated, “It is incredibly exciting to support new works and playwrights while breaking out of the traditional theatre settings and bringing these readings into breweries, cafes, and libraries to make this a true community event.”

The 2024 lineup was announced in late winter and consists of the following: "After" by Mike Ackerman, "All the Young Punks" by Jeff Roda, "Beauty" by Gary Blackwood, "Charlotte’s Letters" by Jennifer O’Grady, " Control of the Dirt" by Louise Schwarz, " Dig We Must" by Paul Allman, " Ex-Gay Bar" by David Simpatico, " Like Kissing Moonlight" by Stacey Upton, "Madness Most Discreet" by Donna Hoke, "MLES2GO" by Michael P. Adams, " Mutability" by Straton Rushing, and "The Maple Street House" by Melissa Matthews.

Each play has its own director and cast.

The casts, which are made up of over 30 Hudson Valley actors, will perform the staged readings at the partnering businesses and organizations throughout the region.

This is very different from what most theatergoers are used to. This year’s partners consist of The Hudson House & Distillery, Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center, Hyde Park Library, Kingston Standard Brewing Company, Newburgh Brewing Company, Norma’s Café, Oakwood Friends School, Obercreek Farm, Poughkeepsie Public Library District (Boardman Road Branch), River Valley Arts Center, and Staatsburg Library.

Gasparini concludes, “Overall, a theatre festival plays a vital role in fostering cultural vitality, social cohesion, economic growth, and artistic expression within a community.”

Supporters can purchase tickets in advance to each show or purchase a weekend pass which offers access to all available readings throughout the weekend. A schedule for the event can be found on New Deal’s website (newdealarts.org) along with links to purchase tickets.

But with the help of his wife Diana and her twin brothers, and the groundbreaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall, Cavendish emerges from the hospital ward and devotes the rest of his life to helping fellow patients and the disabled.

Warner Bros. Entertainment released the trailer for Breathe on their official YouTube channel in March 2024. The two-minute-long video begins with the disappearance of Maya's husband and Zora's father, Darius. After leaving the family bunker for a quick trip above ground and clad in a protective suit, we last see Darius with his oxygen levels dangerously low before his fate is left unknown. In the three years since, Maya and Zora have been unable to contact Darius via their radio and haven't seen a living thing. Soon, however, they encounter human life - but these intense strangers might be more than they seem. After fleeing the unknown pair during a supply run, Maya and Zora lock themselves back down in their bunker, but it's not long before the strangers begin pleading to be let in. One of the strangers, Tess, claims to know Darius and says she needs access to his home-made O2 generator as it could be the key to rebuilding the world. When Maya and Zora let Tess and her accomplice inside, they realize they might have made the worst mistake of their lives.
