Virginia hunting available.

The beautiful state of Virginia offers a rich, abundant and varied habitat for a wide variety of big game, waterfowl and turkey.  Our featured outfitters offer Whitetail Deer , Turkey , Bear and Dove hunts, but Waterfowl and Elk hunts are also available in the state of Virginia.  Our featured outfitters offer their guests exclusive access to private land hunts.  This family-owned property has been managed for quality game for many years and offers the hunter the benefits of pre-scouted property, shooting houses or existing stands.  In addition to prime hunting land, some outfitters provide lodging and meals for their guests.

Virginia Hunting Terrain and Wildlife Habitat

The state of Virginia offers something special for everyone!  Over 30% of the state is used in agriculture, so no doubt there is plenty for the native wildlife to eat, as well!  There is trophy deer hunting in VA from the sea to the mountains!

Virginia Hunting Areas and Regions

The Coastal Plain, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay, is rich waterfowl hunting area because it is rich in marshlands.  Between Fairfax and Fredericksburg, VA there are some good duck hunting hotspots.

The Piedmont Area is rich and fertile and this is where the majority of the farming is done in the state.  Tomatoes, soy, peanuts and tobacco are a few of the crops produced.  There are even a few wineries and vineyards, but those are in the mountain areas.  Deer, turkey and duck hunting opportunities are found in this area.

The Blue Ridge and the Valley & Ridge areas are the hot spots for whitetail deer, bear, turkey and even elk.  The Blue Ridge Mountains are truly a breathtaking sight!  This part of the country draws many visitors, particularly during the autumn months when the mountains are alight with fall foliage colors.  What a great time to get in the woods and scout out a perfect spot!

The far west of Virginia is the Appalachian Plateau.  This, too, offers some great hunting opportunity for a variety of game.

Virginia Hunting License and Regulations

For most Virginians, hunting is a long held and sacred tradition.  Virginia has welcoming policies for hunters to enjoy the state’s resources.  However, there has been many years of game management and development of the state’s wildlife management areas for public hunting.  Virginia is a big proponent of youth and apprentice hunting, with a goal of keeping the tradition alive and preserving wildlife for future generations.   In-depth research can be conducted at Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries website.

The Whitetail Deer season kicks off with a youth hunt in late September, followed by archery season.  Different area have regulations regarding bag limits and early and late season, and which counties allow gun hunts.  Our featured VA Hunting Guides will make sure you are set to be within the law.

Bear hunting is on the rise in Virginia – but this is a no-bate state.  Hunting is only allowed in designated areas around the Blue Ridge Mountain Range.  Our featured VA hunting guides will know the hunting method used, typically spot and stalk, as well as the correct seasons and bag limits.

Spring and fall turkey are available in Virginia.  The spring is a fantastic time to take to the woods in pursuit of a big gobbler!

Virginia Hunting Tidbits

  • Total number of deer taken legally in VA last season was 190,745. That’s down a bit from recent highs of over 250,000, but overall still much improved over numbers in the 1980s.

Doc Kestner and his monster Virginia Whitetail Deer

  • Some huge bear have been taken in Virginia. Hunting is an essential tool in controlling the population.  DJ Lacks, A hunter in Lunenburg County, VA took a 674 pound bear, topping almost 9 feet tall.  That busts the VA record book wide open!

Virginia Hunting Trips

I have often said that it was the canvasback that built this business, and its true we have some world class areas for canvasbacks, but we are really so much more. Over the last 20 plus years we have put together some of most productive and diverse waterfowl hunting in the eastern flyway.

The operation at a closer look

Potomac river.

We have many private blinds on the Tidal Potomac River mainly in the Woodbridge area. Over the years we have worked really hard in positioning them to take advantage  of the feeding habits, weather patterns, wind direction, tide conditions, migration patterns, refuge impoundments and the kitchen sink. The Potomac has a variety ducks that migrate there every year. We hunt shallow bays near the refuge impoundments and the larger creeks for mallards, black ducks, pintails, gadwalls, ring necks, and widgeon. When it gets colder we move to our big water blinds to target canvasbacks, redheads, and blackheads (Chesapeake term for lesser scaup) and greater scaup. But when it freezes then it all comes to the big water blinds. And of course the bonus is we take Canada geese on a lot of our duck hunts. Our blinds are fixed stationary blinds and can accommodate up to 5 shooters comfortably, 6 shooters possibly. If you have more than that in your group we can run multiple blinds.

Our Inland Swamps and Ponds

Our inland areas are where we do a lot of our early season hunts.  During that time we have a lot of wood ducks, teal, and some resident mallards, and black ducks. Then there is always a smattering of gadwall as well. As we start getting into the  migration and colder weather the mallards and black ducks start to pour in. The ponds consistently produce Canada geese and some will cough up both geese and ducks.  These areas are well off the beaten path, but access into our blinds is very user friendly. We like to limit our puddle duck hunts in these areas to no more than 4 hunters per blind. Our blinds in these areas will be either stationary box blinds or permanently fixed A-frame blinds.

Field Goose Hunts

Most of our field goose hunts occur in central Virginia, Our farms are in the counties of Orange, Fauquier, and Culpeper.  Some of my most memorable hunts have been during the evening while a full moon hangs over the field with big flocks of Canadas in route to our field against the back drop of the rolling hills of the piedmont. Simply awesome! We do these hunts from A-frames or layout blinds According to our clients mobility.

Pick Your Hunt

We start our season on September 1. During that month we target early Canada geese on both water and in the field. Our water hunts are primarily on the Potomac and are very consistent; while our field and pond hunts take place at our farms in the central part of the state. We target both teal and geese the last half of the month. Teal hunting is all about timing if we time it right then its awesome, if we don‘t then the poor geese take the beating. The 4-day October season is all about wood ducks and teal in our swamps. It doesn’t get any better than our setup we have at Big Tree. All I’ll say is that you better bring your A game, because when they turn the corner into the slough they are going to be right in your face! November is all about hitting the birds that are staging here as they migrate through. We run a combination of hunts during thIs time. We‘ll continue to pound the swamps for wood ducks and teal, the only difference now is that the mallards  and black ducks will be joining in. Because our swamps are loaded with food we pull a lot of ducks into these areas. This is also when we turn our attention to the blinds on the Potomac that are positioned around the refuge impoundments. We run traffic on these birds as they as they access these ponds. They are mostly mallards, black ducks, and gadwall. It's this part of the season when we will take a lot of Canada’s while duck hunting provided Canada's are in season. December through January is when it's all in play, This is usually when we get our first big push of Canada geese. As they stage on our farms we get after the field hunting. As long as we don‘t get a major freeze  the swamps are fat with fat mallards and black ducks. Back on the river we are utilizing our stationary blinds or setting our 28-foot pontoon floater and running a massive spread for gadwall, widgeon, redheads, ring-necks, black-heads, and of course cans. Everything being equal and we had enough cold up north all of our birds should be in town, at that point all we need is some good nasty local weather to get them up and moving.  At this point in the season we run both morning and afternoon trips. A cloudy windy afternoon can be magical for the big three divers, and our afternoon hunts are very convenient for our local folks to get off work early to do some gunning. If we get ice, well it's game over, it all comes to our big water blinds at that point. This has been our MO for the past 20 plus years and it has served our clients well.

Turkey Hunting In Virginia

Two-day guided spring hunts.

Join us for two days of turkey hunting in the hills of Western Virginia. Much like the grouse, Virginia turkeys are one of the most complex birds to hunt. These birds are incredibly wild—using the terrain completely to their advantage. These ridgelines, valleys, and mountains can be tough to navigate, providing these birds with excellent cover. Pair that with incredible eyesight, hearing, and intuition and you've got one of the toughest turkey hunts you can find.

They can sneak around above you and below you without making a sound. You'll never see them until the very last minute—which makes this kind of turkey hunting so exciting. Our guides use a run-and-gun method developed over decades of hunting these hills. We locate the birds during scouting missions leading up to your trip. It's truly a game of cat and mouse.

I've Got You Covered

What to expect.

Every trip is custom-tailored to you and/or your group. From the time we meet until the time I drop you off, absolutely everything is taken care of, and everything is considered. During the first half of the season, we can only hunt until noon, so the remainder of your day will be spent fishing with your guide or relaxing at our full-service lodge. During the second half of the season, you can choose a half-day hunt, half-day fishing, or full-day hunt—you'll break for lunch and hit em hard in the afternoon.

Trip Preparation

Leading up to your trip, I’ll be in touch (a month out), with a rough plan of the day you booked. A week in advance, I provide a full itinerary of the day. You’ll know what the weather will be, what equipment you’ll need, what we're eating for lunch, and where to meet.

Lunches and Beverages

Eat lunch on a secluded ridgeline or gravel road, away from the public and your everyday life. Meals are all handmade and all of your dietary restrictions and special needs (whether you’re a carnivore, vegetarian, or vegan), are covered—accommodating the need of every individual on board. The Yeti is always packed with beverages.

Non-Stop Turkey Hunting and Fishing

My biggest goal is to leave you with an experience and a day of hunting and fishing that you will never forget. When we get out in the woods, we hit 'em and we hit 'em hard. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned veteran, we use all of our experience and skills to get you on the best turkey hunting and fishing—providing the best time with us possible.

Spring Turkey Hunts

April 8 - april 23, first half of virginia spring turkey season.

During the first half of Spring Turkey Season in Virginia, hunters are permitted to hunt on half-hour before sunrise until noon each day. During this season we offer half-day hunts and half-day smallmouth bass or trout float trips to help our guests maximize their time in the mountains of Western Virginia.

April 24 - May 13

Second half of virginia spring turkey season.

For guests looking to spend all day out in the hills hunting Virginia Turkey, this is the time to do it. We can hunt one half-hour before sunrise until sunset each day. After our morning hunt, we'll break for lunch, with food and drinks provided, then head back into the woods for the second half of the hunt. The legal bag limit per hunter is one turkey per day. If your group gets your limit in the morning, come back to the lodge to relax and share stories about your day or hit the water on the drift boat—fishing for smallmouth bass or trout.

Get Out On The River

Smallmouth bass & trout fishing.

Whether its the first half of turkey season when we can only hunt until noon, or its the second half and you've bagged a trophy Tom during your morning hunt, we want you to get the most out of your trip to Botetourt County, Virginia. That's why we offer guided fishing trips during your stay with us. This time of year is particularly great for Smallmouth Bass on the New River and the James River . The trout fishing on the Jackson River is equally as exciting.

Let's Talk The Hunt

Tactics & equipment.

We hunt on both public and leased land and are specially permitted to guide on National Forest Land. Calling tactics are dependent on the time of day, time of season, and the results of our guide's scouting leading up to your trip. With our run-and-gun strategies, we may cover a lot of ground or we may end up hunkering down in one place, it's all dependent on the birds and the day. That being said, come prepared to move if the hunt demands it.

The Day Of The Hunt

We're up at 5 am serving breakfast at the lodge and preparing for the day's turkey hunt. Our guides will walk you through the day's hunt, going over tactics we'll be using, the ground we'll be covering, the areas we'll hunting, and what to expect during your turkey hunt with us.

During The Hunt

Our guides do all of the preliminary scouting leading up to your trip to ensure we have the best chance to harvest that trophy Virginia Turkey. They do all of the calling for you, guiding you through where the birds will be approaching from and helping you ready your shot.

Keeping You Going

We like to travel light, using a run-and-gun method of hunting, flanking the birds around ridgelines and hillsides. Our guides bring enough water and snacks to keep you going throughout the hunt and provide full lunch and beverages during the day's break at noon to ensure you're ready to hit 'em again in the afternoon. Nobody likes a hungry hunter—we've got you covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes turkey hunting in virginia so special.

It's a combination of the terrain and the birds, a blend of tough and fun hunting on rugged and beautiful terrain in the mountains of Western Virginia.

Are there any special restrictions?

Yes, like most other states, Virginia has certain restrictions when hunting turkeys. We guide modern shotgun and muzzleloading hunts with the use of decoys and blinds. No electronic calls may be used, it is unlawful to use dogs, and it is unlawful to possess any shot larger than number 2 fine shot.

What do I need to bring turkey hunting?

You'll need to bring your own personal items. Things to bring include:

  • Camouflage clothing with green foliage (complete coverage - hat face mask - gloves, everything)
  • Turkey vest with butt pads
  • Good mountain hiking boots - ideally water resistant
  • Bring layers, no muck boots allowed because they’re worthless
  • Spring in the mountains can be anywhere from 30-80 degrees

Our guides handle all of the calling, so you won't need to pack any calls for your Virginia Turkey Hunt.

Do you process the turkeys?

Our guides will process and clean your turkeys for you. You can have it sectioned, quartered, and packaged for travel, or you can eat your quarry with the guests at the lodge.  Additionally, you can donate the meat to the lodge for a future meal other guests will enjoy.

Do you rent guns and ammo?

Yes! Guns and ammo are available for rent. Try one of our Benelli Super Black Eagles or a Beretta A400 Extreme Plus. You can also purchase special turkey loads by Kent cartridges for $25/day.

What about turkey taxidermy?

Our team of experienced guides have recommendations for professional taxidermists that can create any type of mounts you'd like to have made.

Do I need a hunting or fishing license?

Yes, you will need to purchase a hunting license and fishing license for your trip. You can purchase licenses online at the Virginia DWR Website . We don't recommend purchasing a license until we have confirmation of your trip and that the weather will be in our favor.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, I require a 50% deposit that can be paid online, over the phone, or via check in the mail.

Can I Bring My Kids?

Of course! Bring your wife, partner, kids, or anyone you'd like! Each hunting and fishing trip has a maximum capacity of two hunters or anglers.

Is Your Guide Service Handicap Accessible?

We most certainly are! For years we've been taking wounded veterans on the water with our friends at Project Healing Waters. We cater to all anglers!

What if there is bad weather?

Here in the mountains of Virginia, we can endure some heavy rains, flooding, and snow. We do our best to plan around the weather but if for any reason we need to cancel or postpone your trip due to unsafe conditions, we will work with you to figure out a better date or get you a refund.

What if I need to cancel?

To get a refund on your deposit, cancellations must be made at least one week before the booked trip date.

The Best Virginia Has To Offer

It's all about the experience.

We've redefined what a guided trip is—everything from the service we provide, quality of meals we cater, and experience you gain. It's near impossible to guarantee success in the woods or on the water, but we can damn sure guarantee you'll have an unforgettable time.

Other Guided Bird Hunts

All inclusive stays, turkey hunting & lodging.

Nestled in West-Central Virginia on the banks of the James River, Hodges farm is a 13 Acre residence with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have a full-service lodge, two glamping tents, and all of the amenities you need to feel at home in nature on our little slice of paradise.

What an amazing experience! Guided fishing was a first-time experience, and we were not disappointed. Wesley was very helpful in planning our excursion, honing in on what we specifically wanted, to make the experience fun and memorable. He partnered us with Preston, who was in close contact leading up to the event, ensuring he met the needs of what we wanted, from what kind of fishing we wanted to do, to dietary needs for lunch planning.

We got to fish, Wes did the rest. From changing lures when necessary depending on what they’re biting to feeding us a great lunch on the river. He really catered to our group the whole way. We’re already booking more trips for bird hunting as well as fishing. Looking forward to our next adventure with Wesley Hodges!

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. It’s indescribable what a Wes Hodges Guiding and Lodging experience is like. From the moment you plan the trip and even after you leave, Wes and his team personally curates your trip to fit you. It’s so much more than the fishing. No matter what level you’re on, there’s something to be learned from Wes, whether it’s about casting, technique, or life.

Booked the trip for my 40th birthday, had never tried fly fishing and Wes looked like the guy to teach me! Ended up that Wes had an emergency the morning of our trip but was very communicative and managed to get us another guide, Brad, who was awesome and patient, despite my lack of fly fishing skills. Had an amazing time and caught a bunch of small mouth! Would go again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I had a tremendous time with Wes. Very knowledgeable about the river, patient and personable. We're both beginners to fly fishing and Wes is a great teacher and guide. We'll go again and can't wait to bring the rest of the family. Highly recommend. Lunch on the water was top shelf.

Wes’s upland bird hunting experiences are second to none. He addresses every detail from scouting out the best locations and covers to preparing delicious lunches in the field. His dogs are a pleasure to watch work and hunt with. I highly recommend Wes for your next bird hunting excursion.

We booked a float trip with Wes & I asked him to instruct my daughter & make her fall in love with fishing. Mission accomplished! Wes was professional, personable, knowledgeable & fun. We caught many smallmouth and had a ball. Lunch was fabulous and I highly recommend Wes for your next trip. Now, out to purchase fishing supplies for my daughter, thanks to Wes!!!

Outstanding from start to finish!! Wes and Preston worked tirelessly to provide us with everything we needed to have a great time and an incredible experience!! We had 4 guys with different skill levels in our party, and both guides tailored their feedback to each of our unique needs. In addition, they provided us with top level equipment to keep us comfortable and a nice lunch break. I would recommend this company to anyone!!

On this our first ever upland bird hunting trip, my son and I could not have hoped for a better guide! Wes Hodges is the real deal! Incredibly experienced and incredibly knowledgeable and a pleasure to spend time with. I highly recommend Wesley Hodges Fly Fishing and Bird Hunting. We’ll be back for sure.

Our guide Preston Austin made all the difference. This was my second Fly Fishing trip and I had yet to catch anything. That would soon change. Preston informed, instructed, assisted and encouraged throughout the day. From the flies and their configuration on the line to technique and spotting, our success was directly linked to his significant fishing acumen. Add to that a fun spirit, a focus and interest in us and a nice lunch with beautiful surroundings, we could not have had a better day.

Thank you Wes Hodges for an awesome two day fly fishing adventure on the New and James Rivers of VA. Wes is a top notch professional who knows the craft of teaching a challenging skill well. This is my second time fly fishing with Wes and I look forward to many adventures in the future. The accommodations Wes has built for clients on his property are awesome and he's a friendly host with superb cooking capabilities.

FOURTH GENERATION OUTFITTERS

North carolina duck hunts.

Duck hunting, Currituck County, North Carolina, Virginia, Fourth Generation Outfitters

Northeast North Carolina has been known for its duck hunting with the Currituck Sound being no exception. For over four generations, my family has been guiding on bodies of water such as Coinjock Bay, North River, and the Currituck Sound. North Carolina’s duck hunting has been on a rising demand for all hunters. We at Fourth Generation Outfitters specialize in waterfowl hunting. A short boat ride will take you to one of our large blinds ranging from open water to marsh blinds. We also hunt from a float blind called a scissor-rig, or our 1 man Layout Boats. Hunting location is determined by the guides and is based off of weather conditions. Some of the ducks you can expect to see are puddle ducks such as teal, wigeon, gadwall, mallards, and black ducks. Also divers such as blackheads, ringnecks, buffle heads, canvasbacks, and redheads. Our duck seasons consist of a 2 day season in October, and starts again in November with a 2 week break in December and continues until January 31st. Northeast North Carolina offers an early teal season east of Highway 17 in September as well. We only allow four hunters per guide to ensure safety. We welcome father/son/daughter/mother hunts also. Included in the hunt is transportation to and from the blind, the guide, and the setup of our decoys.

All North Carolina Duck Hunts end at 1:00 pm, as this allows time for scouting in the afternoons.

VIRGINIA DUCK HUNTS

Virginia guided diver & sea duck hunts.

It is no secret that Virginia holds some of the best guided diver & Sea duck hunts on the Atlantic Flyway.

We hunt the Lower James River, Back Bay, and Lower Chesapeake Bay out of our Sissor rig, Bush Blinds or layout boats. Hunting location is determined by the guides and based off of weather conditions. The Canvasback is one of the most sought-after ducks. They like big bodies of water, and sit in large rafts of ducks. It takes a big decoy spread for one of our Virginia guided diver hunts. Our Sea Duck hunts are a lot of fun. You get lots of shooting in, as these are tough birds to knock down! We recommend #1 or BB shot for Sea Ducks. In Addition to the canvasback, & Sea Ducks, Virginia also holds lots of Buffle Heads, Blue bills, Red heads, and Brant, just to name a few.

Virginia Duck Hunts

Sunday hunting is allowed for waterfowl in Virginia, so we can extend our hunting and weekend seasons. Virginia also offers a chance to draw 1 of 750 swan permits. Out of State license can be purchased online at www.gooutdoorsvriginia.com (estimate $100)

All Virginia Duck Hunts end at 1:00 pm, as this allows tme for scouting in the afternoons.
