IGGY AZALEA IN CONCERT: Iggy Azalea came to America to "Work," and it's paid off — in just a few short years, the young Australian rapper has gone from teenage runaway to international sensation with her street smart brand of neofeminist rap. Ditching her Aussie accent in favor of a Southern drawl, Azalea pays homage to the Dirty South at her live shows, hyping up crowds with twerk-heavy performance of songs like "Bounce" and rolling out special Southern guests like Atlanta son T.I. Her 2014 full-length debut stands as one of the year's most anticipated releases, and the New Classic Tour — her first ever in North America — is sure to contain all the energy and attitude that have made her one of rap's fastest rising young stars. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Born in Sydney and raised in a small Australian town, Azalea dreamed of moving to America from an early age in order to be closer to hip hop culture. Leaving her family at age 15 and moving to Miami, she bounced around the South for several years before relocating to Los Angeles and releasing her first official video for the song "Pu$$y." The video became a YouTube hit, paving the way for the success of her debut mixtape Ignorant Art and leading to a relationship with T.I., who released her 2012 Glory EP on his Grand Hustle label. Making her studio full-length debut in 2014 with The New Classic, Azalea will treat fans to a string of highly anticipated appearances on her first North American tour. FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY: "Iggy put on a hell of a show filled with tons of guest appearances!" "Great energy! A ton of ratchet twerking amazingness!" "Her stage presence, talent, and the way she hyped up the crowd was unforgettable. Without even an album out, she has become a superstar."

Iggy Azalea (born 7 June 1990) – aka Amethyst Amelia Kelly is a hip-hop artist from Mullumbimby, New South Wales, Australia. After moving to the US at the age of 16 and befriending several rappers in the music industry her career started to quickly blossom.

Living in Australia made Iggy Azalea feel isolated from the hip-hop world and she was inspired to move to America, which is considered the birthplace of hip-hop. She was influenced by the Atlanta, US rap group TLC as a teen and would soon live part of her life in their hometown. After someone from Interscope Records convinced her to move to Los Angeles, US she began releasing videos of herself rapping by posting them on YouTube. When she posted her music video for the song “Pu$$y” on YouTube it immediately went viral and launched her career into the mainstream.

Soon after her success on YouTube she released her first mixtape in 2011 titled “Ignorant Art”, which featured several guest appearances from rappers like YG and Problem. She had plans to release her debut album in the Summer of 2012 but she decided to postpone in order to allow the rapper T.I. to produce the album. Instead of releasing her debut album in 2012 she decided to sign with Grand Hustle Records and release an EP titled “Glory”. The EP featured several songs that became hits such as “Murda Bizness”, which featured T.I. on the track.

In October 2012 she released her second mix tape and then started to tour for her new material in early 2013. Her touring schedule in 2013 included several notable gigs that helped push her further into stardom such as being the opening act for musicians like Rita Ora, Nas, and Beyonce.

Before her debut album “The New Classic” was released she put out her most famous single “ Fancy”, which featured Charli XCX. The single went onto achieve great commercial success and reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single is incredibly catchy containing electronic synth leads and hip-hop vocal chants, and is a consistent go-to song for dance clubs. In April 2014 Iggy Azalea finally released her long awaited debut album “The New Classic” to commercial success. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and was a considerable success for a female rap album.

Since the release of Iggy Azalea’s debut album she has collaborated with Ariana Grande on her single “Problem” as well as Jenifer Lopez on her album “A.K.A.” Apart from music Iggy Azalea is involved in modeling and fashion as well as some involvement in the film industry with a role in Fast & Furious 7. Iggy Azalea’s strong influence of Southern rap and old school hip hop are present throughout her music and is part of the reason that makes her such a compelling performer.

Live reviews

Aussie pop-rap sensation Iggy Azalea (real name Amethyst Kelly) has had an inspirational journey to her current seat at the rap royalty table. Scarpering to Miami aged 16 – on her lonesome – to live the American dream and 'make it', she hustled and spat her way into the mentoring arms of T.I., whose lessons put her on the trajectory to superstardom. Now, with a veritable platoon of fans, majestic singles like “Work”, “Bounce” and “Fancy” (featuring Charli XCX), and a deserved confidence, she's set to take over the world. Recent beef with Nicki Minaj has done little to dampen her blazing rise (she recently made UK history alongside Ariana Grande, becoming the first artists to top the UK chart which now includes streaming data).

Her sets, lined with mammoth tunes from her debut, The New Classic, are explosive, glorious cavalcades of glee. Festooned in outlandish costumes and kaleidoscopic lights, Azalea performs with what can only be described as 'swagger', strutting up and down the stage, teasing the throngs of screaming fans, and whipping the venues into a frenzy. Catch her before she ascends to the dizzying heights of arena tours, and marvel at her sublime stage presence.

Amethyst Kelly, better known as Iggy Azalea was one of the success stories of 2014 as this Australian runaway had a huge amount of chart success globally. Her refreshing feminist take on hip hop quickly won her a huge fan base and whilst attending a sold out date at London's Shepherds Bush Empire I quickly realised exactly why that was.

Charismatic as she is confident, Iggy appears onstage to huge cheers accompanied by dancers and a lot of bass. First big hit of the night 'Bounce' gets the crowd whipped into frenzy as Iggy and her dancers conduct the crowd. Demonstrating her freestyle ability along with her pop sensibilities, there is a massive emphasis on enjoying the good time whilst spectating her gig.

Her Rita Ora duet 'Black Widow' gets great reaction from the British audience having been a huge chart hit upon its release. The final lead up of tracks made you realise Iggy's influence on the charts in 2014 as she performs four mega-hits 'Problem', 'Work', 'Fancy' and 'Beg For It' in quick succession. Modest throughout, Iggy Azelea clearly took the right option to leave Australia as her success is startling.

This show was wonderful! Out of five stars, I would give it a 4.5. The singers included, in order, Melanie Martinez, Troye Sivan, Mike Posner, surprise guest Ruth B, Charlie Puth, then Iggy Azalea. It was absolutely amazing, and if ever one of the singers comes to Indy again, I will definitely go. This was a great show. All of the people did a fantastic job.

although the show was canceled, it was never postponed. All her other shows got a new date but this one didn't which sucks. Wouldn't want to see her anymore anyways even though I was really looking for her and her guests. Got my money back though.

ABOUT IGGY AZALEA

Iggy Azalea is a Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum selling Australian musician who has become one of the most accomplished artists in music history. Her 2014 debut album The New Classic, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Charts – a first for an international female artist, spawned a US chart topping trifecta of worldwide #1 multi-platinum smash hits: “Fancy” (featuring Charli XCX, 8x-platinum); “Black Widow” (featuring Rita Ora, 4x platinum); “Problem” (collaboration with Ariana Grande, 6x-platinum). “Fancy” was the longest leading Hot 100 #1 hit by a female rapper in chart history, Billboard’s 2014 Song of the Summer, iTunes Best Song of 2014, the year’s most-streamed song on Spotify, and the most-watched music video on Vevo. While “Fancy” was still residing at #1 on the Hot 100, “Problem”  – Iggy’s collab with Ariana Grande  – peaked at #2. Iggy had made chart history again, this time as the first artist since the Beatles to rank at #1 and #2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 hits. Iggy Azalea’s videos have amassed over 3 billion views to date.  In late Summer 2021, Iggy will release her highly anticipated third studio album titled End of an Era .

Iggy Azalea Is Super Psyched About Touring With Pitbull: ‘I Wish I Could Be In the Crowd Watching’

Iggy Azalea is about to embark on the "I Feel Good" tour with Pitbull, and the rapper said she can't wait to hit the stage.

By Gil Kaufman

Gil Kaufman

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea isn’t sure how much touring she’ll do in the future after announcing that she plans to pull back from releasing music after dropping her  The End of an Era album Aug. 13. But what she does know is that her upcoming tour with Pitbull is going to be one hell of a going away party.

“It’s interesting and unexpected but at the same time it makes perfect f—ing sense,” the rapper tells Billboard about the all-bangers combo tour called I Don’t Know About You But I Feel Good that is slated to kick off on Friday (Aug. 20) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkson, Mich. “His music is so high energy and so is mine, and the shows will be high energy from start to finish.”

Azalea’s Era is a return to what she says is her most natural lane, uptempo EDM guaranteed to get bodies moving. That’s why she’s looking forward to both sets filling the stage with a “crazy group of women dancing” for what she believes are simpatico audiences. “I have an extremely large Latin fan base and so does [Pitbull], and this tour made sense to me … I’m really excited about it.”

Trending on Billboard

Iggy azalea talks dancing off into the sunset on her own terms with 'the end of an era'.

She also promises that there will be “no sad songs” or ballads at all, and assumes Pitbull will similarly keep things positive and ecstatic. “I wish I could be in the crowd watching the show,” she shares.

And while Azalea, 31, doesn’t currently plan to release another album, she’s been pouring a “lot of love” into the intense rehearsals for her set and suspects that it won’t be the last time we see her on stage.

But, with a 1-year-old child at home, this might be a “last hurrah” for her heavy touring days — the 32-date outing will keep her on the road through Oct. 13 — which is why she’s been approaching it as if she’s the headliner. “I want the best energy so I can have the best crowd and I can have the best time and it’s most enjoyable for me,” she says. “I want the best show and I don’t give a f— whether I’m on first or last, I give the same effort every time.”

The tour is kicking off amid a renewed swell of COVID-19 cases caused by the highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus, which has caused a number of acts to cancel , postpone or re-think dates . As a mother of a young child, Azalea says the COVID concern is “always in the back of my mind,” as it should be in everyone’s. “It’s no joke. I’m vaccinated and I’m glad we’re touring outdoor amphitheaters and everyone on my crew has to be vaccinated,” she says, adding that everyone also has to be masked-up when they’re not on stage.

Due to the concern over the rising number of coronavirus cases, her son Onyx is not coming on the road because of her anxiety about him getting exposed to the more transmissible Delta variant, which has resulted in more children getting infected . “I have to make sure to have him in mind,” she says. “It will be difficult because I’ve never spent more than one night away from him. I feel so guilty every day, and everyone around me is like, ‘Don’t worry he’s not gonna remember this.’ But I’m like, ‘But I will remember it!'”

Iggy Azalea is taking a break from music, but not without leaving fans with some new tracks to close out the summer with. The new mom opened up to ET about why she's taking a break, and how life has been since becoming a mom to her 1-year-old son, Onyx . Azalea's new album, The End of an Era , is a mashup of the music she's experimented with throughout her career.

"I mean, sonically, it's just a mashup of all the different sounds that I've played with throughout my musical career," she explained to ET's Denny Directo. "There's a lot of electronic elements, a lot of big, heavy Miami, '80s synths and then of course always the heavy, 808, hip hop drums that you have heard in 'Fancy' and those big hits that I've had."

The project really is an end of an era, with Azalea sharing that she planned for the album to be her last, for now, as she ventures off to explore other creative avenues .

"I always felt that I had other creative things that I really wanted to get to, and it's hard to get to them when you're a recording artist because so much of recording is going on tour after the fact. And I do love that, but with COVID the last year and a half now, that stopped my touring, which was good for me in a way, because it freed up my time to do other creative projects," she shared. "I'm so deep in those now, and I've been enjoying them so much, and I just feel that I have so much to really bring to those things and those other ideas that I want to do, that it really cemented me in my decision that I think now is a good time for me to say everything that I need to say, and then take my step away and focus on some other creative things."

As a Gemini, Azalea is still reserving the right to change her mind.

"I am a Gemini, so I never say things super definitively, but this is my last album on my distribution deal, so I don't have an obligation to write any more. And I haven't signed any other offers and I don't intend to, so we will see, but right now there is nothing else contractually that I am obligated to do," the rapper said.

She continued, "But this isn't a contractual obligation, putting out this album. This was so important to me. I really took my time with it because I'm like, 'This may be the last one,' and I'm pretty sure it will be, so I just really wanted to make it something that I was so happy with and that I can live with loving the cover, loving every song. And for me, it's a no skip album."

Being in the spotlight and being scrutinized for every decision she makes or doesn't make has influenced the "Fancy"   rapper's decision to step away from music -- that and her son Onyx, who she shares with rapper Playboi Carti.

"My decision to not make any more music is ultimately, really at this point, truly 95% of it is about the fact that I just don't feel that I am comfortable being that level open to the public," she shared. "Maybe it's partially because I have a son now and I feel that maternal instinct to want to really protect him and have that safe space. And I don't really want to invite strangers to have an opinion about my life so much anymore."

"So it's more about that but also, I really don't want to tour anymore because I have my son, and I'm so excited I'm going on this big Pitbull tour that starts on the 19th actually, which is my last big hurrah. I'll still do squat dates and things like that, but in terms of an aggressive tour where you're away all the time, I don't want my son to be transient in that way, always on a tour bus. I admire people that do it and do it well, but for me, that's not my vision for my future," she added.

That public scrutiny has also forced the performer to pull away from being as open about her son and her life as a mother, especially after encountering internet trolls that attacked the 1-year-old.

"I post him on my close friends' stories on Instagram. So everybody I want to see Onyx is seeing Onyx all the time," Azalea revealed. "It's not that it necessarily hurts my feelings, I'm a grownup, but it's my job to protect my son as a mother. So when I see something like that, that's so extreme, I would love to share them all the time, but that wouldn't be really me protecting him knowing that that's what's going on, so I can't do that."

Pitbull Announces North American Tour With Iggy Azalea And Sean Paul

iggy azalea on tour

After selling out over 40 shows and performing to over 450,000 fans last year, Grammy-award winning superstar Mr. Worldwide aka Pitbull has announced his latest North American Can’t Stop Us Now Tour featuring Iggy Azalea and Sean Paul, and openers SiriusXM Globalization DJ’S. The extensive 50+ date run, produced by Live Nation, kicks off this July at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC making stops in Montreal, Cincinnati, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and more before wrapping up in Hollywood, FL at Hard Rock Live on October 19th.

Pitbull invites disruption on a global scale as a GRAMMY-winning independent international superstar, education advocate, business entrepreneur and motivational speaker. With countless awards, dozens of international number ones, hundreds of gold and platinum certifications, millions of single sales, 25 million album sales, and cumulative video views in excess of 15 billion, one of the most impressive careers in music history set the stage for him to make true change. Not only did he successfully help establish Sports Leadership Arts and Management (SLAM!) tuition-free public charter schools across the country, he was honored by the United Nations General Assembly on behalf of Clean Water Here; he is a partner in eMerge Americas, the annual tech and innovation summit held in Miami; and he was honored alongside music legends as well as Nobel Peace Prize and Pulitzer Prize winners at the 2019 International Achievement Summit.

Pitbull and Horizon Media have partnered to launch 305 Worldwide, a new multicultural marketing agency. After announcing several partnerships in 2020 such as Espanita Tequila, LivexLive, and “From Negative to Positive” Podcast, Pitbull ended 2020 with a bang by ringing in the new year performing on the main stage in Times Square. In the first month of 2021, Pitbull became the co-owner of NASCAR racing team [Team Trackhouse], and proudly served as the Grand Marshal of the 2021 NASCAR Daytona 500. At the same time, he only continues to expand his influence across fitness, health, and wellness. He launched 305-Life as the first daily supplement line to philosophically reflect the vibrant spirit of Miami through its high quality product.

As an investor and brand ambassador, he joined forces with Echelon for the “Pitbull X Echelon” partnership, providing Pitbull-themed rides to millions of users exclusively in the Echelon Fit App. He also teamed up with Columbia Care to introduce his own CBD line, N2P—an acronym for one of his most famous mantras “negative to positive.” He returned to the road in 2021 with the sold out I Feel Good Tour, packing arenas and amphitheaters coast-to-coast. Speaking of, Pitbull has performed for millions worldwide and even joined forces with the #1 life and business strategist, Tony Robbins, for numerous engagements around the globe. He maximizes his own creative, entrepreneurial and personal freedom, yet again, on his next long-awaited English album, coming soon.

In late Summer 2021, Iggy will release her highly anticipated third studio album titled End of an Era.

It’s rare for an artist to become the personification of their genre. For just a word or phrase from their mouth to conjure the entire artform. Sean Paul is one of those artists. Let him say “shake dat ting” in his commanding voice, and you’ll hear the embodiment of dancehall. Across seven studio albums and counting, Sean Paul has taken the genre global, from its origin in clubs in Kingston, Jamaica to the top of the charts, packing some of the biggest venues in more than 120 countries. Only Sean has the distinction of being the first Jamaican to play shows in Kazakhstan and Madagascar.

The Grammy Award-winning, international superstar has ignited stages in over 120 other countries, performing for huge audiences in some of the biggest venues around the world. Sean Paul has earned several Grammy and Billboard Music Award nominations and is the recipient of an American Music Award, MOBO Awards, Soul Train Awards, MTV Music Awards, ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards, a Source Award and a BET Award. He is the only Jamaican artist to have won an American Music Award (2006) for Favorite Pop/Rock Male artist.

Iggy Azalea on Canceled Tour: ‘I Just Deserve a Break’

  • By Brittany Spanos

Brittany Spanos

iggy azalea

Iggy Azalea  shared an official statement with Seventeen Magazine   on why she canceled her first arena tour , citing her desire for a new creative direction and need for a mental break in a long message to fans.

“I’ve had a different creative change of heart,” Azalea told Seventeen . “I want to start totally anew, and if I stayed on my tour, that would mean I wouldn’t even be able to start working on that until after Christmas.”

The mental wear and tear of being “on all the time and going all the time” have also had an effect on the Australian rapper. “I just feel I deserve a break,” she revealed in the statement. “I’ve been going non-stop for the past two years, nearly every single day….I need a break from everything to just enjoy what I worked so hard for, and I don’t really feel like I’ve had a chance to do that. I need a break to figure out what I want my sound to progress to, and I need a break to figure out how I want my visuals to progress.”

The shift follows years of performing the same material, as she noted. “Even though a lot of people just discovered it, I am a musician and a creative person and I want to be able to perform new stuff and do new things,” she said. “I feel like I’m at the end of an era now.”

Azalea’s sentiments about a new creative direction echo her original reasons for postponing the tour. Her Great Escape Tour had been originally announced in December 2014 and was set to launch in April with Nick Jonas and Tinashe as opening acts. I n an interview with 97.1 AMP  following the initial postponement of the tour in March, she referred to herself as a “psychopath” when it came to the creative direction of the tour.

Both Jonas and Tinashe moved on to other live plans , with Jonas joining Kelly Clarkson for part of her tour and Tinashe joining Nicki Minaj on her Pinkprint tour. Azalea revealed to Seventeen that she had difficulty finding new opening acts for the fall dates.

The “Fancy” performer has been working on the follow-up to her 2014 debut album The New Classic . She collaborated with Britney Spears on the single “Pretty Girls,” reportedly part of a new album from Spears. Azalea co-directed the single’s campy new video .

Why Iggy Azalea Is Coming to The Bahamas

Resorts World Bimini is gearing up to host a huge concert weekend next month, headlined by hip hop star Iggy Azalea.

On April 16, Azalea, best known for her breakout song “Fancy” that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, will headline a show on the Bahamian island.

It’s another boon for Resorts World Bimini, which has become a burgeoning entertainment hotspot, particularly for its weekend events.

Travelers can party with Iggy the entire weekend of April 15-17 in paradise just 50 miles off the coast of South Florida at the expansive oceanfront complex of Resorts World Bimini.

Iggy is slated to perform at a concert at the Resorts World Bimini Beach.

At this recently-opened private beach and day club (which was developed in partnership with Virgin Voyages), concertgoers can enjoy the performance in their very own private cabana, while taking a dip in one of two lagoon pools, or kicking back in a hammock with a cocktail in hand.

From Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Resorts World Bimini is just a 25-minute flight or two-hour ferry/boat ride away.

Getting asked to join Beyonce on tour is an accomplishment for any entertainer, even Iggy Azalea . Azalea is set to join the Mrs. Carter World Tour on October 17. The femcee tweeted her excitement: “I’m going on tour…with Beyonce. Thank you so much to everyone for supporting me! and thanks Beyonce!”

But Iggy isn’t the only person Baddie Bey helped— Luke James joined her Europe leg and was invited back for her North American stops.

We gathered a list of our own entertainment favorites we would love to open for Jay’s better half. Flip the page to see who we picked!

As long as he’s not leg-dropping any fans, Miguel would be the best opener to set the show off.

Melanie Fiona

The songstress joined Bey during her BET experience show and it was a big hit. Joining Bey would be the perfect match in musical heaven.

Any man that titles a song after you deserves to be your opening act. It’s that simple.

Keyshia Cole or Keri Hilson

What better way to repay Bey for not addressing your outlandish shade then to open up for her. They would have to do it together though, she’s not that forgiving.

Karrueche Tran Says She's "Got Nothing To Do With" Chris Brown And Quavo's Beef

Chris Brown

Chris may have a rap sheet longer then Bey’s entire entourage but what better way to gain public redemption then by joining the queen on tour.

She’s the younger, badder side of Bey and instead of comparing lets join forces. Rih Rih can definitely learn tour etiquette from Mrs. Carter. Lesson #1: time management.

Any group that gives you your Instagram name—Baddie Bey—definitely deserves an opener spot.

They’re the older male version of Destiny’s Child. As long as they hide the 5-hour energy from Ginuwine of course.

Chocolate Drop

Kevin Hart ‘s alter ego may not have the bars, but he would be a crowd pleaser in the laugh department.

Keyonce Bowles

Beyonce’s faux twin deserves a chance to shine since her superstar sis is always stealing the limelight. The YouTube sensation would be a funny take on the world tour but she also has the pipes to impress the crowd.

From ‘Fancy’ to a canceled tour: A breakdown of Iggy Azalea’s demise

iggy azalea on tour

Stick a fork in Iggy Azalea. She’s done.

It was just a year ago that Azalea’s “Fancy” was being heralded as the song of the summer, but the past few months have not been kind to Australia’s most famous rapper. She was forced to postpone, then altogether cancel her Great Escape tour when she couldn’t procure an opening act. After being nominated for four Grammys, she failed to win any, but inspired many, many inches of writing from those who hoped that she wouldn’t .

[ White echoes: Rap, race and Iggy Azalea ]

Her career has had some bright spots — she was, after all, the only artist besides the Beatles to have her first two singles occupy the top two spots on the Billboard 100 chart simultaneously. She’s released collaborations with Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, and newer acts such as Ariana Grande, Rita Ora and Charli XCX. She claims T.I. as a mentor.

And yet, an image problem that may have started as a dark spot on an otherwise promising career has now metastasized into a nasty network of tumors that could derail it entirely — some would say it already has. A highly palpable wave of schadenfreude made its way through the Internet when Azalea’s tour was canceled. It’s not just that people don’t like Azalea, or even that they want her to fail — they want her to disappear.

It would seem, on some level, that they’ve finally gotten their wish. What’s next for Azalea’s career after such forceful widespread and public rejection? Does she go away, get married, and live happily and silently ever after with fiance Nick Young? Does she mount a comeback? History would suggest she mounts a comeback attempt.

In the meantime, let’s assess how she arrived at this place.

“Piggy Azalea”

Azalea found seemingly sudden ubiquity when her first single, “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX, was ushered in to song of the summer status thanks to a big push from Clear Channel’s On The Verge Program. It was inescapable.

The backlash against Azalea came as swiftly as her ascendance.

Most recently, Azalea was forced to abandon a scheduled appearance at Pittsburgh Pride when LGBT groups started dropping out in protest over her inclusion, citing past racist and homophobic remarks Azalea made on social media. In 2012, someone created a Tumblr blog called Piggy Azalea which archived those now-deleted tweets .

Among them were gems like these :

“This Asian lady on the plane tried to act like she didn’t understand me. I told her a– b—- u gone know English today cause that’s my seat!”

“Asian women abuse false eyelashes.”

And these :

“B—-es in la be stick skinny. To the bone. White, black, mexican… Okay… So maybe not mexican :s they still got the box body on lock.”

“wondered why my butt felt like it was about to grow 2 legs, flip me off, & walk away. then i remembered i played soccer yesterday w 5 d–e b—-es.”

“Is it wrong that I feel happy to hear southern accents again & not mexican ones? F— it. Iam.”

In her 2011 song “D.R.U.G.S.,” she rapped , “When the relay starts I’m a runaway slave-master.” She later apologized for the lyric.

This wouldn’t have been a good look for anyone, but it was especially bad for Azalea, who has been criticized for misappropriating hip-hop culture and not understanding or really respecting it. At its core, rejection of Azalea wasn’t just about the fact that she was a white Australian woman who rapped like a black girl from Atlanta — it was that, to many, it was obvious that she’d jumped to the head of the line because of it. Azalea was the modern-day equivalent of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra .

In an emotional December interview with Hot 97’s Ebro Darden, Azealia Banks accused Azalea of what she called “cultural smudging.”

Here’s the thing with Iggy Azalea. I feel, just in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues, or black politics, or black music or whatever there’s always this under current of a “F— you.” Like ‘F— y’all n—–. Y’all don’t really own s—. Y’all don’t have s—.” That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record. That Iggy Azalea s— is not better than any f—ing Black girl that’s rapping today. And when they give those awards out – ’cause the Grammys are supposed to be like accolades for artistic excellency. Iggy Azalea is not excellent. And the message I see when I see these Grammys being given out … I have a problem when you’re trying to say that it’s hip-hop and you’re trying to put it up against black culture. Even Nicki Minaj over the past two, three, four, years has done so much to kind of create this social presence and this hold like this social consciousness so she’s like “Re Up” and “Roman Reloaded” and here you got f—ing Iggy like “Reclassified.” Like you’re trying to smudge out … it’s like a cultural smudging is what I see. And when they give these Grammys out all it says to white kids is “You’re great, you’re amazing, you can do whatever you put your mind to.” And it says to black kids, “You don’t have s—, you don’t own s—, not even the s— you created for yourself.” And it makes me upset in that way. So put her in the pop category. Put her with Katy Perry. Put her and Miley Cyrus is the same box together. Don’t put her in hip-hop. Just because she’s not singing does not mean it’s rap music.

Azalea’s response — hectoring Banks about her “attitude” — didn’t earn her many points, either.

Hip-hop may have originated in Boogie Down Bronx, but it’s since spread to the suburbs and throughout the world . The ownership that originated with black and Latino communities in New York is quickly evaporating, which led to Forbes declaring in a troll-y headline (that it’s since backpedaled on) that “ Hip Hop Is Run By A White, Blonde, Australian Woman .” Never mind that this declaration came from a business magazine, and not say, The Source, Vibe or XXL, longtime chroniclers of hip-hop. It was enough.

A Tribe Called Quest founding member Q-Tip later jumped into the fray and tweeted Azalea a history of the genre.

Again, Azalea, rattled by what she saw as Q-Tip’s condescension, fired off a response.

J. Cole on rapped on “Fire Squad”:

History repeats itself and that’s just how it goes/ Same way that these rappers always bite each other’s flows/ Same thing that my n—- Elvis did with rock and roll/ Justin Timberlake, Eminem and then Macklemore While silly n—-s argue over who gon’ snatch the crown/ Look around my n—- white people have snatched the sound/ This year I probably go to the awards dapper down/ Watch Iggy win a Grammy as I try to crack a smile/ I’m just playin/ But all good jokes contain true s—/ Same rope you climb up on they hang you with

Of course, the music industry has never been a meritocracy — for every Andra Day, there are five Cassies — and this also contributed to the backlash against Azalea. Not only did she leap to the top of the Billboard charts, but  she didn’t deserve it. She couldn’t even rap.  *Stick a pin in this. We’re coming back to it.

“The realest?” Not so much.

One of the chief arguments against Azalea was that she was a manufactured pop star masquerading as a rapper. Evidence began to mount that supported that.

There was Azalea’s infamous code-switching incident on “Dancing With the Stars” during a performance of “Fancy”:

Iggy Azalea – Fancy – DWTS 18 (Finale) by IdolxMuzic

And repeated assertions that Azalea didn’t write her own lyrics which culminated in Nicki Minaj calling out Azalea at the 2014 BET Awards.

[ Hey, BET, who the heck is Lionel ‘Ritchie?’ ]

Of course, plenty of artists (more than you think) benefit from the help of ghost writers, and there’s usually a gendered aspect to this attack. Most often, female rappers are accused of not writing their own lyrics in order to discredit them in the male-dominated world of hip-hop. Even Lil’ Kim has had to address the repeated assertion that Biggie wrote her rhymes. But this time, Iggy wasn’t the victim of a sexist attack. It was a female MC coming to snatch her wig.

“You guys this is always very, very emotional for me because this is my fifth year winning this award, and I don’t take it for granted,” Minaj said while accepting the award for Best Female Hip-Hop artist. “I really don’t. I thank God that I’ve been placed in a position to represent women in a culture that is so male driven. And I want you to know this. I’m working on an album called the ‘Pink Print,’ but that’s not a plug, but it’s a plug. But my point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”

How in the world was Azalea supposedly “running hip-hop” if she wasn’t even writing her own songs? Her mentor T.I., who signed Iggy to his Grand Hustle label, denied he was ghostwriting for Iggy in a July interview with Bijou Star of Detroit’s Hot 107.5.

But just because T.I. denied writing for her, Azalea wasn’t in the clear. In March, Skeme told Sway in an interview at SXSW that he included the “who dat, who dat” line on Iggy’s biggest hit, “Fancy,” because he’s an enormous New Orleans Saints fan.

“We had something to do with it,” Skeme said. He also was unabashed with his props for Charli XCX, who wrote the hook.

Iggy Azalea doesn’t write all of her own songs (like some other rappers) and she puts on a “hip-hop” voice that she doesn’t use when she talks. These are points used as evidence of Azalea’s lack of authenticity. Even in its myriad worldwide permutations, authenticity is still pretty paramount to hip-hop, right?

Well, it’s worth checking out this essay by NPR’s Gene Demby , where he addresses that very idea:

Cecelia Cutler, a linguist at New York’s Lehman College, says that when kids who aren’t black traffic in hip-hop slang or African American Vernacular English — even if they aren’t themselves hip-hop fans — they’re not trying to mimic blackness, per se. They’re calling upon this language to signal (or “index,” as linguists like to say) some of the postures that people associate with hip-hop — coolness, toughness, hipness, swagger, separateness . The black part is being referenced, but it’s not quite the point. In some circles, Cutler said, hip-hop-inflected black speech has become a kind of prestige English.

Okay, so maybe Iggy gets a pass on the manufactured voice and lyrics that she didn’t craft as long as she can do the part that really matters — you know: rap.

Remember that pin we mentioned earlier? Let’s take it out now. There’s a certain meritocratic structure within hip-hop culture that informs endless debates about the genre’s greatest. Who your “top five” are can say a lot about where you’re from and how much you value wordplay over flow. Tupac or Biggie? Nas or Jay Z? Underground or commercial? The greatest example of this ethos is the rap battle: artists duking it out via freestyle (improvised wordplay), complete with challengers and bragging rights.

During a 2013 visit to “Sway in the Morning,” Iggy responded to Sway’s request for a freestyle by … not freestyling. Instead, she spit a few bars from a track that was yet-to-be released.

Boom. There it was on video. The empress has no clothes, and the Internet lit her up for it . A second attempt during a concert netted an unintelligible mess. An enterprising YouTuber attempted to translate .

Schadenfreude-palooza

After video of Azalea “freestyling” resurfaced in December, Twitter had a field day with it.

interviewer: "Iggy, freestyle for us" iggy: *clears throat* iggy: "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea" — Ryan Broderick (@broderick) December 29, 2014

Months later, the joke was still going strong.

She didn’t win any of the four Grammys for which she was nominated this year, including best rap album, which went to Eminem for “The Marshall Mathers LP 2.”

Then she lost a Twitter battle (which she started right before the Grammys) with Papa John’s after criticizing the company when one of its delivery drivers kept her phone number and gave it to a relative, who began texting her. Despite bad protocol on Papa John’s part, Crissle West, co-host of the popular podcast “The Read” tore Azalea a new one for not using a Google Voice number or having someone else answer the door for her.

“Iggy Azalea is the type of person who, it’s like even when she’s right, you still have to be mad at her, or pissed off at her, because why is she so god—- stupid,” West said.

West continued: “When I signed up for Duane Reade, I gave them my Google Voice. I do not f— around about my f—ing phone number, and I ain’t nobody. So I don’t see how you can be Grammy-nominated –you didn’t win none, but all right — be Grammy-nominated and be this huge fake white rap hope and really think that you can order a cheese pizza from Papa John’s with your real f—ing phone number and nothing’s going to happen with that. Like, you really thought that. You’re a f—ing idiot.”

West’s read starts at 1:19:50. The whole thing is worth a listen.

When Iggy announced that she was postponing her Great Escape tour, it was a prime moment for her detractors to say “I told you so.” And then she was forced to cancel it completely due to less-than-stellar ticket sales. Azalea, it seemed, was no longer capable of selling out the massive arenas for which she’d been booked. Billboard reports that multiple sources confirmed some dates had only sold 20 percent of their available tickets.

In a Billboard exclusive, an executive with Azalea’s promoter, AEG, told the magazine that the company didn’t market the tour when Azalea failed to procure replacements for Nick Jonas and Tinashe, who were scheduled to open for her before the tour was pushed from spring to fall.

“As we were not able to fill the support slots on the tour in the fall, due to so many artists already having commitments and working this summer, we had not advertised or promoted the new shows since last winter,” AEG vice president Debra Rathwell told the magazine. She insisted that “the dates were selling well and were going to do fine.”

The only thing more embarrassing than yanking the tour might have been the pictures of empty seats that would have circulated with lightning speed had Azalea proceeded.

Iggy announced her engagement to Nick Young just days after news hit that her tour was canceled. It was difficult not to interpret the move as a calculated effort to redirect heat away from her torpedoing career, which was beginning to resemble the burning carcass of Bernadine’s cheating ex-husband’s Beemer in “Waiting to Exhale.”

What happens next? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Your move, Iggy.

Stop hating on Iggy Azalea’s ‘blaccent.’ She’s not hip-hop’s real problem.

Is Iggy Azalea ‘the realest’ or is her authenticity up for interpretation?

The pop star welcomed her son Onyx with her ex Playboi Carti in 2020

Iggy Azalea is celebrating the fourth birthday of her son Onyx .

Azalea, 33, who announced she had quietly welcomed her son Onyx with her ex Playboi Carti in 2020, shared a carousel post on April 29 of photos from her son’s Bluey -themed pool party.

In the first picture, the rapper, 33, rested her head against her son as they sat outdoors.

Onyx was also captured sitting on a tiger float as he sported Bluey swimming trunks and goggles, while the third slide featured Azalea with her pals as they celebrated Onyx while sipping on cups featuring Bluey and her sister Bingo.

“Cheers to Onyx,” the mother of one said as she raised her drink. “Happy Birthday Onyx, we love you.”

Onyx then blew out his candles on his Bluey-shaped cake before posing for a snap with his mother.

The 4-year-old also had a go at batting a Bingo piñata, while Azalea had fun sliding down a huge water slide.

Azalea’s post also included a snap of Onyx standing by a popcorn machine before captioning the post with, “4L 🤍.”

Sharing more snaps on her Instagram Stories , the star shared a pic of her taking a turn hitting the piñata with a bat, as well as Onyx eating ice cream and hugging his mother.

Azalea’s birthday celebrations for her son comes after she shared a snap of the two before they went snorkeling in the ocean in March.

Sitting on a yacht, Azalea was dressed in a black and pink wetsuit, while Onyx wore a blue wetsuit and a matching life jacket.

"🐠 🐠 🐠," Azalea’s caption read as she held up a peace sign.

In 2021, the “Fancy” artist opened up to PEOPLE about balancing her work while being a mother.

“Honestly, it's definitely really hard, but that makes it super fulfilling. I feel way more accomplished to know that I am able to do all these things at the same time," she said at the time. "But sometimes it can be very stressful. I like to spend the whole day with my son, and he doesn't go to bed until 7 o'clock.”

She added, “That's when the clock starts for me, whether it's in the studio or working on other creative projects. I don't go to bed until 4:30 in the morning, and my son wakes up at 7:30."
