Bangkok, 10 November 2023 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) arranged a special welcome at Suvarnabhumi Airport for IndiGo Flight 6E 1639 from New Delhi, India, on which holders of Indian passports or travel documents travelling to Thailand for the purpose of tourism will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay.

Hosting the airport welcome ceremony, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said “This special airport event symbolises Thailand’s invitation to Indian tourists to take advantage of the tourist visa exemption during the six-month period. The event reflects the Thai government’s commitment to ease visa and immigration procedures for foreign tourists, especially during this high season.”

Also joining Ms. Thapanee at the event included H.E. Mr. Nagesh Singh, Ambassador of India to Thailand, and Mr. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific.

From 10 November 2023 until 10 May 2024, Thailand is extending a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in Thailand for Indian tourists. This followed the similar short-term stimulus visa schemes for Chinese and Russian tourists.

India is one of Thailand’s top 10 source markets. In the first 10 months of this year, statistics showed a total of 1,302,483 Indian tourists, an increase of 86% when compared to the same period in 2022.

With the visa exemption scheme, TAT expects Thailand to see 1.6 million Indian tourists in 2023, generating about 65.6 billion Baht in revenue.

Indian tourists to Thailand stay on average 7-8 days with daily spending of around 5,500 Baht per person. As well as the millennials and families, Thailand also see affluent Indian travellers in the wedding, golf, and incentive segments.

Mr. Chattan said “TAT will leverage the short-term visa exemption and strengthen partnerships with local tourism operators to arrange joint sale promotions for different market groups, including leisure, women, seniors, and golf.”

Thai tourism businesses will be invited to join the TAT’s participation at two major trade shows in India in 2024, including the Outbound Travel Market (OTM) in Mumbai on 8-10 February and the South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in New Delhi on 22-24 February.

In addition, TAT is increasing the promotion of Thailand’s direction towards high value and sustainability in the Indian market by raising awareness on a multitude of meaningful travel experiences that reflect the Thai soft powers and sustainable goals. Special promotion schemes will be arranged specially for the corporate, incentive, and wedding segments.

Indian citizens must always check if they need to  get a visa to enter Thailand . Visa policies can change and temporary exemptions are sometimes in place.

This Thailand eVisa for Indians gives travelers the convenience of being able to apply online . There is no need to go to an embassy to deal with the hassle of paperwork in person.

Thailand’s temporary visa exemption for Indian citizens

Thailand has added Indian citizens to their visa exemption policy for a temporary period, along with certain other nationalities.

Indians do not need a visa to enter Thailand until May 10, 2024 . After this date, standard visa requirements will return, unless otherwise specified.

Thailand’s standard visa policy for Indians

There are different types of visas available . The type of visa an Indian traveler should get depends on the reason for travel . For example, tourist visas are required for vacations, while business visas are required for business trips.

An Indian passport holder can usually complete an online application for the Thailand electronic visa on arrival (eVOA) for tourism purposes. This option has been suspended for Indians while the visa-exemption is in place.

Why do Indians need a Thailand visa on arrival?

Outside the temporary exemption period,  Indian passport holders must have a Thailand visa to enter the country, according to the country’s visa policy. The electronic visa on arrival (eVOA) is largely regarded as the best way to obtain one .

By pre-registering for an electronic Thailand visa on arrival online before traveling, this saves time by avoiding filling out paperwork at the border.

The simple online system is also far quicker and more convenient than going in person to an embassy to fill out forms and submit documentation.

For these reasons, the Thai eVOA is recommended for Indian citizens.

What Is a Thailand Visa on Arrival for Indian Citizens?

The online Thailand visa on arrival for Indian citizens is a travel permit obtained electronically . It simplifies the process of getting a visa to enter the country.

Also referred to as the “Thailand eVisa”, the eVOA allows Indian nationals to travel to Thailand on holiday or transit through the country .

Nationals of India can get their Thailand visa by filling out a short online form with their personal and passport details before traveling to Thailand. Most applications are processed within 1 to 5 days . Indian travelers get their electronic visa delivered directly to their email inbox.

How long can I stay in Thailand with the eVisa?

An approved Thailand visa on arrival grants an Indian passport holder a stay of 15 days in its territory.

It is not possible to extend the Thailand visa on arrival.

The validity period of the Thai online electronic visa is 15 days from the date of issue. Therefore, Indian travelers with an approved Thailand eVisa should enter the country within 1 month from getting the visa.

Note: The Thai eVOA is a single entry visa . It can be used for one trip.

How to Apply for a Thailand Visa from India?

When the eVOA service resumes for Indians, they can complete the simple Thailand eVisa application online. Filling out the form takes just a few minutes.

Indian applicants will need to provide some basic personal information on the application, including the following:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Nationality

They will also need to provide the following information from a valid Indian passport, as well as their contact details :

  • Passport number, issuing and expiry date
  • Telephone number
  • Email address

The third step involves providing details of the Indian national’s planned trip to Thailand, including the following travel information :

  • Dates of arrival and departure
  • Port of arrival
  • Accommodation in Thailand

The application for the Thailand online visa on arrival for Indian citizens can be done up to 24 hours prior to the intended entry date. However, it is advisable to submit it at least 5  days before traveling .

FAQ’s about Thailand Visa on Arrival for Indian citizens

Can indians travel to thailand without a visa.

For a temporarily period, until May 10, 2024, Indians can enter Thailand without a visa .

When the visa exemption has finished, Indians will return to needing a visa for their trip.

What types of Thailand visas can an Indian citizen apply for?

The Thailand eVOA is the most convenient option for Indian travelers . It covers a range of travel purposes including tourism, business, medical and wellness, among others.

The eVOA is currently not available for Indians due to the temporarily visa-exemption, which allows them to enter Thailand without a visa.

Is the Thailand visa on arrival for Indian free?

No, the Thai visa on arrival or eVOA for Thailand is not free . All available visas to enter the Southeast Asian country carry a fee.

When applying for your eVisa online, applicants need a debit or credit card . An application cannot be processed unless travelers pay for their electronic visa.

The government of Thailand finally announced a visa-waiver scheme for Indian passport holders. Starting November 10, 2023, Indian nationals can visit Thailand for 30 days, without a visa. This waiver will be in place for six months, up to May 10, 2024.

What Visa-Free Entry Means

What visa-free entry means is, if you have an Indian passport, after arrival at a Thai airport, you can go straight to immigration. You don’t have to go to the visa on arrival counter, or any visa counter for that matter. If you are arriving within the specified dates, you don’t need a Thailand visa.

This visa exemption is significant for two reasons: One, it increases the period of stay to 30 days, which was 15 days under the visa on arrival scheme. And two, it results in a direct saving of the visa fee, which was a minimum of 2000 Baht, and 2200 Baht if someone opted for the fast track visa.

Visa-Free Entry Rules and Requirements

Visa-free travel does not mean there are no rules or formalities left to comply with. When you go to the immigration counter for the entry stamp, there will be a set of rules and requirements to follow, as under:

1. Passport with a remaining validity of six months, and two blank pages.

2. Boarding card of the arrival flight

3. Confirmed return or onward journey air ticket

4. Confirmed hotel bookings for the entire period of stay in Thailand

5. Proof of funds

6. The purpose of the visit must be tourism only.

Let us see these requirements in detail:

1. Passport

Your passport should have a minimum remaining validity of six months on the day of your arrival in Thailand. The passport should also have at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

2. Boarding Card

The boarding card of the flight on which you arrive in Thailand is an important document which shows the details of your inward travel, and is examined by the immigration officer. Keep your boarding card safe, and present it when asked for.

3. Return Air Ticket

You need to have a confirmed return or onward journey air ticket for travel within 30 days, including the dates of arrival and exit. A plan to exit Thailand via a land crossing may not be accepted. Carry a printed copy.

4. Confirmed Hotel Bookings

Confirmed and verifiable hotel bookings are needed for the entire period of stay in Thailand. Carry printed copies of all hotel confirmation vouchers or emails.

Any special proof of funds requirement for travel under the visa-waiver scheme as not been announced. However, going by the funds requirement specified for the other countries which enjoy visa-exemption in Thailand, you need to have at least 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family.

The proof of funds, if demanded, has to be shown in cash only. It can be either in Thai Baht, or USD, or another popular currency. If you are planning to stay longer than 15 days, you may like to carry some extra money.

6. Purpose of Visit

The purpose of your visit has to be tourism only. Any type of employment in Thailand is prohibited on tourist visa.

YouTube Video

I have posted a YouTube video on this visa-free travel scheme. You may watch it at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnGYiwdVOOg

This will be the first experience of visa-free travel to Thailand for Indian passport holders, and it is not clear how strict the Thai immigration officers will be. Whether they will add a document verification step before the immigration counter is also not known, though it is a possibility.

I will be traveling to Thailand under this visa-free scheme in December 2023, and will report any additional information based on my own experience. Expect this article to be updated soon.

Thank you for reading. For any more information, clarification, or feedback, please write a comment below. I will be happy to respond.

Hi, do you know if visa free is applicable for multiple entry

Hi Yes, the visa-free policy allows multiple entry for travel by air, as long the policy is in force. However, if you plan to enter via a land-border, then perhaps entry is allowed only twice per year.

How was it sir? I am traveling to Thailand early next week and was wondering as an Indian passport holder. Thank you

Hi Zaheer. I have traveled in December 2023 under this scheme, and just had to pass through immigration. It was quick, took just two minuted at the immigration counter. So, after landing, go straight to immigration. My YouTube video on this subject has all the details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84iZ-Y8zJAs

How Thailand Hopes to Meet Its Goal For 1.7 Million Indian Tourists

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

April 19th, 2024 at 8:52 AM EDT

India is one of the most important source markets for Thailand. Pre-Covid, nearly 2 million Indian tourists flocked to Thailand, making India the third-largest source market in 2019. Now, Thailand is looking to bring India back to pre-Covid levels.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Tourism Authority of Thailand on Thursday hosted a group of more than 8,000 incentive visitors from India. The delegation is part of the authority’s goal of receiving at least 1.7 million Indian visitors this year, it said in a statement.

India is one of the most important source markets for Thailand and is also the fastest-growing. In 2023, over 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand , making the country the fourth-largest source market for Thailand. These tourists spent more than THB 63 billion ($1.7 billion).

In 2024, through February , India ranked fifth among source markets with more than 300,000 tourists traveling to Thailand. In 2023, Thailand was one of the top international destinations for Indians, with Bangkok being the second most popular foreign destination after Dubai, according to travel agency Skyscanner .

Schemes to Attract Indian Travelers

Thailand also introduced a visa waiver for Indian tourists from November 10 last year till May 10, 2024, a scheme that had been put on hold post Covid.

Thailand tourism governor Thapanede Kiatphaibool called India a high quality and high spending market, while explaining the reason for resuming the visa exemption for Indian travelers. The governor had then said that the country was evaluating if a visa-free facility could permanently be extended to Indian travelers.

Apart from this, Thailand’s key strategies to attract Indian tourists include subsidy schemes for incentive, wedding, and celebration groups, the governor said earlier this year at a travel exchange . “Joint promotions with airlines and travel agents will be offered for repeat visitors and golfers,” Kiatphaibool added.

All-Year-Round Destination

Thailand minister of tourism Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said, “I am determined to elevate Thailand to be a quality and safe destination that delivers a valuable experience to our visitors from India through Thailand’s soft powers and promotes Thailand to be an all-year-round destination.”

Expecting INR 185 billion ($2.2 billion) in tourism receipts from India, Thailand looks to attract over 1.7 million Indian travelers to the country in 2024, as it aims to attract 35 million tourists this year.

In India, Thailand is marketing itself to various segments, including families, millennials, golfers, luxury travelers, incentive groups, as well as wedding and celebrations groups.

Beyond popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is also promoting destinations like Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi and Khao Yai.

Thailand also plans to launch special initiatives for senior citizens, women travelers, Gen Z, and LGBTQIA+ travelers. Wellness tours and adventure sports are also segments where the destination is planning to focus.

Thailand Visa on Arrival

Securing a Visa on Arrival upon entering Thailand

The Visa On Arrival scheme allows passport holders of 19* listed countries and territories to enter Thailand without needing to apply for a Tourist Visa from a Thai Embassy in their own country.

To receive a Visa on Arrival, a traveler must meet the following requirements:

  • Be from an approved country.
  • Be visiting Thailand strictly for tourism purposes.
  • Hold a genuine passport with a valid expiry of more than 30 days.
  • Be able to list a valid accommodation address in Thailand that can be verified. This address can be a hotel or an apartment.
