Portman Road: Ipswich Town

ipswich town fc tours

By John Fielding from Norwich, UK (ipswich football ground) [ CC BY 2.0 ], via Wikimedia Commons

Portman Road has been the home of Ipswich Town Football Club since 1884, just six years after the Suffolk based team was formed. It’s not the same stadium as stood back then, obviously, with the ground undergoing major renovations in 2002. It is the largest ground in East Anglia with a capacity of over 30,000. It’s certainly a lot bigger than the club’s original ground of Broomhill Park where they played for the first six years of their existence.

Portman Road was used for football in the winter months and acted as a cricket pitch during the summer, playing host to the East Suffolk Cricket Club from 1885. The cricket pavilion was the first fixed building located at the site when it was erected and remained so for a further eleven years. One of Ipswich’s claims to fame is that they were one of the first teams to use goal nets, something that they did in 1890.

Portman Road Seating Plan and Where to Sit

ipswich town fc tours

As is the case with most grounds that were built over a hundred years ago, Portman Road is very much built in the classic ‘English style’ of having four distinct stands on each side of the pitch. Most of the ground is two-tiered with the exception of The Magnus Group West Stand, which has three tiers.

  • The Sir Bobby Robson Stand – Named after a former club icon and entirely rebuilt in 2001, this stand has two tiers that can house 7500 fans between them.
  • The Cobbold Stand – Originally called The Portman Stand and running the length of the side of the pitch, this stand houses both home and away supporters across its two tiers.
  • The Sir Alf Ramsey Stand – Named after another club icon, this two-tiered stand is behind the Southern goal and was named after their former manager in 2012.
  • The Magnus Group West Stand – The only three-tiered stand in the ground, this one is also the stand that houses the executive boxes, dug-outs and dressing room.

Ipswich Town Ticket Prices

Ipswich’s ticketing system is not so complicated, purely because they only break things down depending on where in the ground you want to sit, how old you are and whether or not you want to pay for premium seating. These are the lowest and highest prices for adults and concessions, presuming you don’t want to sit in the posh seats:

  • Adults: £20 – £30
  • Concessions: £16 – £22

How To Get Ipswich Town Tickets

If you’d like to buy tickets to see the Tractor Boys playing at Portman Road then your fist port of call should be the club’s official website. From there you’ll be able to buy tickets for home games, though in some instances you might have to wait until they go on general sale as they get sold to those with an Ipswich membership first. You can also call the club’s box office directly or buy tickets from the box office at the ground on a match day. Disabled supporters can’t buy tickets online and need to call the club’s Disability Liaison Officer on 01473 400556.

Getting To Portman Road

Ipswich is out in East Anglia so it’s not as easy to get to as a more centrally located place, but transport links are nevertheless reasonably good. Here are some of the more standard choices you might way to make:

Train – Ipswich Railway Station is about five minutes walk from the ground, so if you want to get the train there then you shouldn’t find it too difficult to get to Portman Road. Trains leave Liverpool Street Station for Ipswich every fifteen minutes or so during the day, meaning wherever you’re coming from you’ll probably head into London and then back out.

Bus – The Ipswich Circular, or number 38 bus, runs from the city centre and stops in three different places around the ground, so that’s the one you’ll want to get if you’d rather get the bus than walk.

Car – Getting to Ipswich itself is easy enough, but you might want to figure out the best route for where you’re coming from. Once you’re a bit closer you’ll want to take the A12 and then get onto the A14. The second exit will be sign posted for the A1214, which you’ll stay on until you get to the ground.

By Air – London Stansted Airport is probably the closest major airport to Ipswich at around 50 miles. Norwich Airport is also reasonably close if that tickles your fancy.

Taxi – The road system in Ipswich means it will probably take you about the same amount of time to get a taxi to the ground as it would to walk. Expect to pay around £5 for the pleasure.

Parking Near Portman Road

On-street parking near the ground is something of a no-no owing to the parking restrictions in place there. The fact that the ground is really close to the city centre, however, means that there are loads of good pay and display and public parking options around the place.

Portman Road Hotels

Ipswich is a lovely city with plenty of farmer boy character. There are numerous hotel options open to you, some of which we’ve listed here:

Pubs and bars near portman road.

Ipswich boasts a real charm thanks to its combination of farmer territory and harbour location. There are quite a few decent drinking holes around the place, but we like to be helpful so here are some of our favourites:

Black Horse Inn

The station hotel, the thomas wolsey.

There are a few places in the ground with restricted views and the away end suffers from quite poor leg room. The facilities behind the scenes also leave a little to be desired and are starting to show their age now. It’s a nice day out, though, and everyone in the ground will be nice and friendly. Unless you’re from Norwich.

Hospitality

ipswich town fc tours

As with all top clubs nowadays there are a wealth of hospitality options available to you at the home of Ipswich Town. Here are some of the choices you can consider:

  • Premier Hospitality – Located in the East of England Co-Operative Stand is this intimate lounge that offers a three-course meal before the game, use of the lounge before, during and after the match and a cash bar. You’ll also enjoy seats in the Director’s Box and half-time refreshments as well as post match analysis.
  • Robson Hospitality – A touch more lively than the Premier Hospitality Lounge, The Sir Bobby Robson Suite will see you get a welcome from an Ipswich legend, a three-course meal and executive seating. You’ll also get access to a cash bat and enjoy a match day quiz.
  • Hall Of Fame Hospitality – The Hall Of Fame Restaurant offers you a match day experience in a location that pays tribute to the club’s past players. As well as a welcome from a legend you’ll also have a three-course meal, complimentary match day programme and access to a cash bar.

Private Hire

With lounges and suites that can accommodate up to 250 people for a formal dinner and over 300 people for more informal events, Portman Road is the perfect place to host any kind of occasion in East Anglia. The club promises efficient and friendly staff, an experienced co-ordination team and a variety of rooms to suite everything from conferences to weddings.

Stadium Tours & Museum

The tour of Portman Road Stadium takes in places that are normally ‘off-limits’ to fans. You’ll see the dressing rooms, the players’ tunnel, and the dug-outs as well as the famous boot room and more executive locations such as the boot room and the Champions Lounge. You’ll get a chance to sit in the best seats inside the ground in the Director’s Box and media suite where the manager gives his post-match reaction. Tickets are £12 for adults and £10 for children and seniors. The tours run at very random times throughout the year, though, so make sure you get in touch with the club before rocking up and asking to be taken on one.

There is no museum to speak of at Portman Road, but on the tour you’ll get a chance to see the trophy cabinets that display players’ international caps as well as the FA Cup and Championship winners’ medals. There are also replicas of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Play-Off Final trophies that the club has won over the years.

About Ipswich Town

ipswich town fc tours

Known interchangeably as The Tractor Boys, The Blues or simply just Town, Ipswich Town Football Club were founded in 1878 and turned professional in 1936. They joined the Football League in 1938 and to this day are the only professional club side in the county of Suffolk. Their fiercest rivals are Norwich City and when the two teams meet the match is referred to as The East Anglian Derby. It’s also known colloquially the Old Farm Derby; a cheeky nod towards The Old Firm clash between Celtic and Rangers in Scotland.

Ipswich’s first season in the top-flight was in 1961-1962, an occasion made even more special by the fact that they won the title at the first time of asking. They narrowly missed out on another Division One title in 1980-1981 and 1981-1982, losing out to Aston Villa the first time around and Liverpool the second. They have won the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup and have competed in all three European competitions, never losing a European match at Portman Road. Along the way they have beaten such famous teams as Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan.

Portman Road History

ipswich town fc tours

The first permanent structure at Portman Road was a wooden building known affectionately to the locals the ‘The Chicken Run’. It was built in 1906 and remained there until 1971 when it was sold to a local speedway team, The Ipswich Witches. In 1910 the ground played host to two amateur internationals, both of which England won convincingly. They first beat Bohemia by ten goals to one before hitting twenty past France without reply.

Portman Road was commandeered by the British Army in 1914 to be used as a training camp and remained under their command for the duration of the First World War. During the 1920s it was used to host whippet races but both that and the cricket played at the ground stopped when the club turned professional in 1936. Though numerous changes were made to the ground over the years it was until the 2000s that major renovations took place there.

Future Developments

ipswich town fc tours

The club would ideally like to redevelop The Cobbold Stand in order to increase the overall capacity of the ground to 40,000. That is unlikely to happen any time soon, however, with the club needing to establish themselves as a regular Premier League team before it would make sense to be able to host more supporters. There have been more minor upgrades though, such as improved access and turnstiles, and a reconstructed pitch with undersoil heating.

Russell Hookey looks back on a momentous day for Ipswich Town fans

Thousands of fans gathered in Ipswich for a bus parade and heroes' welcome - after their club secured a return to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.

The Blues were promoted after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town - with fans invading the pitch at Portman Road afterwards.

Donovan Blake sent this report from Christchurch Park.

On the third day of celebrations on Bank Holiday Monday, an open-top bus parade made its way from the stadium, through the town, and onto Christchurch Park.

Manager Kieran McKenna and the players then addressed supporters from the bus before heading off to continue the celebrations at their end of season dinner.

Premier League promotion is likely to bring with it a huge financial boost to the whole town, with one business leader quoting the prize as £600 million.

Terry Baxter, who represents local businesses in Ipswich Central Business Improvement District, said the financial and emotional benefits will be "massive".

Ipswich Town have been promoted to the Premier League after 22 years out of the top flight.

The Tractor Boys beat Huddersfield 2-0 at Portman Road to secure a second successive promotion, having finished runners-up to Plymouth in League One last season.

Kieran McKenna's side already had a three-point advantage over third-placed Leeds going into the final game of the season and only needed a draw to secure promotion from the Championship.

Ipswich became the first club since Southampton in 2012 to gain back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the Premier League, while the result sealed Huddersfield's relegation to League One.

Thousands of Ipswich fans gathered outside the ground before kick-off with some setting off smoke bombs and flares.

The expectant home crowd watched their team pin the opposition in their own half in the opening 20 minutes and Ipswich should have taken the lead following a breakaway in the 25th minute.

But the dominant display saw the Tractor Boys go 1-0 up two minutes later from a well-worked move where Conor Chaplin found Wes Burns unmarked in the box and the Welshman fired home to a huge raw from the crowd.

"To get here so far so quickly, a lot of hard work, everyone together, it's amazing what you can do," he said.

"They're incredible [the players]. I'll speak to them over the next few days, they have been an absolute privilege to work with, my first managerial job. I've been fortunate with the group of players, group of people that I've come across and they are a wonderful group and they deserve all the success.

"It's been great and a massive thank you to my family and to my parents.

"What a journey it's been. I'm not sure it will happen again in the way that we've done it. I know you can say technically it's been done before but I'm not sure it's been done like this in a football club like this, how we've done it and not sure this will happen for a very long time.

"We will work really hard over the summer and what a fantastic challenge ahead and enjoy the celebrations and look forward and we will make sure you enjoy next season."

Ipswich players celebrate during an open-top bus parade around the town.

‘Amazing achievement’: McKenna full of pride as Ipswich savour promotion

  • Manager says leap to top flight has created ‘so much joy’
  • ‘It’s an incredible turnout … everyone deserves it’

The Ipswich manager, Kieran McKenna, hailed his side’s “amazing achievement” as they celebrated promotion with a bus parade around the town. Premier League football awaits the club for the first time in 22 years after confirming promotion with a 2-0 win over Huddersfield thanks to goals from Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson.

The Tractor Boys completed stunning back-to-back promotions on Saturday as they became the first team since Southampton in 2011 and 2012 to win successive promotions to the top flight from League One.

Ipswich celebrated their Premier League return with an open top bus tour around the town on Monday, which even drove past McKenna’s house, and he admitted he was pleased to finish the season well.

Speaking on board the bus, McKenna told Sky Sports: “It’s an incredible turnout, amazing seeing so much joy. Everyone deserves it, the whole town deserves it, the players … for how hard they’ve worked. And the supporters, who’ve followed so loyally for years and have been waiting for a day like this.

“We just set out to be as good as we could possibly be. The closer you get to the end you know you’re within reach of an amazing achievement and we’re so glad we were able to finish off well.”

Promotion marks a remarkable turnaround for the club, who were languishing in 11th place in the third tier when McKenna took over in December 2021. The following season he guided the team to automatic promotion, picking up 98 points to finish narrowly behind League One title winners Plymouth.

Ipswich enjoyed another promotion this year after finishing second on their return to the Championship , one point behind champions Leicester and six points clear of third-placed Leeds.

Thousands of fans greet the Ipswich Town players on their promotion parade

McKenna already has one eye on next season in the Premier League and described it as a “massive job”. He added: “Next season will be the challenge. We kept an incredible level of consistency from League One to the Championship in all aspects really and we’re going to have to do it again. It’s a massive job. We will try to keep the best things from what we have and the most important things that have helped us get here and to try to bring them to a completely different level.”

A fine pedigree of managers have enjoyed success at Ipswich, including Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson and George Burley, but McKenna believes there is a “long way to go” before he joins them. “There’s a fantastic history, with some amazing managers who brought this club to the very highest level of European football,” he said. “We know we’ve progressed a lot in a short space of time but we have a long way to go to be in that sort of company. We’re so proud of what we’ve done but hopefully there’s good days ahead for the club as well. It’s something to cherish.”

Ed Sheeran hails unlikely Ipswich promotion from Miami GP

Ed Sheeran celebrates and speaks to the Ipswich squad after its promotion to the Premier League. (0:42)

ipswich town fc tours

Ed Sheeran has hailed Ipswich Town 's promotion to the Premier League and says the club's success will come as a huge boost to the area.

Sheeran watched Ipswich's 2-0 win over Huddersfield in the United States as he is on tour in Miami. He has been the principal Ipswich Town shirt sponsor since 2021 and is a lifelong fan of the club.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

Ipswich's victory on Saturday at Portman Road secured their promotion back to the Premier League, ending their 22-year spell outside the top flight. Sheeran had been in frequent contact with the team in the build-up to Saturday's match and video-called into the celebrations after the victory, and he said he hopes promotion will bring a lift to the whole area.

"Living just outside of Ipswich, I've seen it go through really difficult times, and I know that being in the Premier League is going to bring, not just real excitement to the football club but also real excitement and joy to the town and lift it up, which is really important," Sheeran told ESPN in Miami.

Ipswich's journey back to the Premier League came under manager Kieran McKenna, who has secured back-to-back promotions after taking charge of the club in December 2021. It's an incredible feat, and Sheeran is predicting the team will continue its upwards trajectory next season.

"What's brilliant about football is it is very unpredictable and you never know what's going to happen," Sheeran said.

"We've seen the top six teams in England fall from grace before, and you've seen people like Leicester win the league. You never know, if we avoid relegation next season, that's the biggest success for me, but you never know what's going to happen."

McKenna was immensely proud of Ipswich's feat, highlighting how they'd finished as the top goal-scorers in the league for the second campaign running.

"It feels incredible," McKenna said after the game. "It's an incredible achievement. There's such a range of emotions today, thankfully all positive but I'm overjoyed for everybody. So proud of the efforts, relieved as well I have to say. When you get to the end point, it's such a big thing. It doesn't come around every year, it doesn't come around every decade, something like this. So we really wanted to finish it off."

Keeping Ipswich in the Premier League will be McKenna's job next season, and while he'll spend a bit of time with his family over the next couple of weeks, they already have preseason plans in place and they'll be looking to bolster their squad ahead of the top-flight challenge.

"It's a massive step up, no doubt about it," McKenna said. "It's not something that I want to think about too much today, but I know it's a humongous step up and every single department of the football club is going to have a massive, massive challenge to be competitive in the Premier League.

"They're challenges to look forward to, challenges to embrace. I don't think anybody externally thought that we could get to this point but they are things to think about next week. This weekend is for reveling in what we've done so far."

McKenna has been linked with Premier League jobs in the past, and the likelihood is he'll attract the attention of other sides this summer, but he's committed to the job at Portman Road. "I love it here, it's a fantastic club," McKenna said. "I'm so proud to be the manager of this football club and I've worked so hard at it every day, given so much of myself and the people around me for the last couple of years.

"So I'm just so focused and enjoying that journey. That sort of speculation has been there for the last two years to be honest. And I've shown loyalty to the club through that and I'm really pleased I've stuck with it and achieved what we've achieved, and there's some big exciting steps to come for the football club."

One of his star players this season has been Leif Davis, the left-back signed from Leeds in 2022. He is looking forward to facing Newcastle in the Premier League, the team he supported as a boy.

"McKenna's taken my game on a massive, massive amount. I hope he stays and we get to work with him for years to come. I had a Newcastle season ticket when I was younger and I can't wait to play at St James' Park," Davis said.

McKenna is keen to look at permanent deals for some of the players they've had on loan this season with the likes of Omari Hutchinson, Kieffer Moore and Jeremy Sarmiento all bolstering their bid for promotion. Hutchinson, on loan from Chelsea, was named Player of the Match on Saturday and it was his second goal which secured the victory.

"I'm speechless, man," Hutchinson said. "I don't know what to say! This is the best loan I could ever imagine. The boys have helped me so much; I just want to thank everyone who's helped me so far. I don't know if I'll be here next season -- right now I just want to celebrate."
