Easy Steps for Entering Thailand from India in 2023

Apply for a thai visa, visa on arrival for indians.

Indian citizens are again allowed to enter Thailand under the Visa on Arrival scheme. There is a restriction in place that Indian citizens can visit Thailand under this program for a maximum stay of 30 days.

If you would like to stay in Thailand longer, you will need to apply for a visa at your local Thai Embassy.

Long Term Visas for Indians

Tourist visa.

Indian citizens may apply for a Tourist Visa from the Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days.

Thai Elite Visa

If you wish to make Thailand easily accessible for many years to come, or are perhaps thinking of relocating permanently, it is worth having a look at the Thailand Elite Visa .

The Thai Elite Visa allows Indian citizens to live in Thailand for 5, 10, even 20 years. Thai Elite members do not need to worry about some of the eligibility criteria needed when applying for other long-term visas.

The Thai Elite visa is exclusive and offers a host of benefits to holders. If you want to enjoy “Thai life” for the long term, you can read more about the Thailand Elite Visa .

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may also apply for a wide range of non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized with a local Thai Embassy or Consulate in India. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to Indians for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them. You can reach Siam Legal at www.siam-legal.com .

Vaccination status and entering Thailand

From January 2023, Citizens from India will be able to enter Thailand with any proof of vaccination status. However, for travelers returning to India, you are required to have a COVID test in Thailand before your flight to India.

Book your Flight to Thailand

Most international airlines are flying into Thailand and follow the rules of the arrival country. If you are transiting through another country, it is best to check with the airline if you need to complete any tests for that country.

Book a Hotel

To find and compare the best hotels available in Thailand, visit Agoda . They allow free booking and cancellation, confirm bookings with hotels and their web page is easy to navigate and compare hotels.

You need to enter an address when traveling to Thailand. The accommodation can be a hotel, home or a friend’s address.

Purchase your Travel Insurance

For travelers from and into India, it is mandatory  to purchase a Travel Insurance policy before traveling to Thailand.  The insurance must be valid for the duration of your stay in Thailand plus 7 days.

Insurance is one of those things that is better to have and not need than need and not have. Travel insurance doesn’t just cover COVID Comprehensive travel insurance will also cover:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Loss of luggage

The most important thing to know about insurance is that foreign travelers are not eligible for any form of free medical care in Thailand. No matter the circumstance, if an Indian citizen needs medical attention, they will need to pay for it. Depending on the severity, this could amount to thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses.

There are multiple reasons to protect yourself when traveling. Many visitors to Thailand choose AXA Insurance Thailand. It is a trusted company that offers comprehensive insurance to travelers from around the world. Their policies are straightforward with good coverage.

Some advantages to AXA Insurance are:

  • Recognized and trusted by Thai authorities and medical facilities.
  • Easy to apply online and approved in minutes.
  • Competitive pricing and cover.
  • Has no 14-day waiting period and covers COVID-related incidents, including asymptomatic cases.
  • Provides customers with a convenient 1-Page Certificate of insurance. This certificate contains all relevant information needed by medical professionals or if making a claim.

To see the cover offered and organize your insurance to Thailand in minutes. Visit AXA Thailand .

Arriving in Thailand – Best Practices

So what can you expect when landing in Thailand? Here are a few things that will help you enjoy your trip and show respect to local Thai people.

Wearing Masks

Wearing of masks is no longer compulsory but still recommended when in public places. You see that many Thai people (and visitors) still wear masks when out and about. It is recommended to wear a mask when visiting restaurants or public venues. You will not get in trouble if you don’t wear a mask, but it is a case of “do as the locals do”. It is about respect and consideration.

TM6 Arrival Cards

The Thai government has temporarily removed the need for visitors to complete the blue arrival card known as TM6. Their aim is to ease congestion at airports and remove another form that holiday makers need to complete. This initiative is in a testing phase, but it is hoped that the removal of TM6 will be successful and the change will become permanent.

Paperwork to Prepare

Though Thailand Pass is removed, and travelers do not need to provide proof before entry, it is best to prepare a few documents before arriving.

  • Certificate of Travel Insurance
  • Visa on Arrival Form
  • 1 passport size photo
  • 2,000 THB visa on arrival fee
  • flight booking and hotel reservation

This will speed up your processing time before leaving your country, or if asked to provide vaccination or testing proof in a random check. These documents can be presented in digital form, but airlines, Immigration, and Health Officers will appreciate the extra effort if you print them.

Following the above advice will ensure you have a smooth trip to Thailand and can enjoy a few weeks of well-deserved vacation in the tropics.

Can I ride Scooty with my Indian Driving license in Thailand ?

Hi Tanveer,

You must have a license if you want to hire a motorbike or car. (International drivers permit)

' srcset=

I am travelling to Bangkok, in Sep last week, from India and planning a road trip down to Phuket. Would I need ‘international driving permit’ in addition to valid Indian driving license ?

You can, if you have a valid driver’s license in English from your country of origin or a valid International driver’s license.

I read the guide but there’s no mention of requirement of ‘internal driving permit’ or English language driving license.

My driving license is in English, would I be permitted to drive 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler in Bangkok and Phuket ?

The government of Thailand finally announced a visa-waiver scheme for Indian passport holders. Starting November 10, 2023, Indian nationals can visit Thailand for 30 days, without a visa. This waiver will be in place for six months, up to May 10, 2024.

What Visa-Free Entry Means

What visa-free entry means is, if you have an Indian passport, after arrival at a Thai airport, you can go straight to immigration. You don’t have to go to the visa on arrival counter, or any visa counter for that matter. If you are arriving within the specified dates, you don’t need a Thailand visa.

This visa exemption is significant for two reasons: One, it increases the period of stay to 30 days, which was 15 days under the visa on arrival scheme. And two, it results in a direct saving of the visa fee, which was a minimum of 2000 Baht, and 2200 Baht if someone opted for the fast track visa.

Visa-Free Entry Rules and Requirements

Visa-free travel does not mean there are no rules or formalities left to comply with. When you go to the immigration counter for the entry stamp, there will be a set of rules and requirements to follow, as under:

1. Passport with a remaining validity of six months, and two blank pages.

2. Boarding card of the arrival flight

3. Confirmed return or onward journey air ticket

4. Confirmed hotel bookings for the entire period of stay in Thailand

5. Proof of funds

6. The purpose of the visit must be tourism only.

Let us see these requirements in detail:

1. Passport

Your passport should have a minimum remaining validity of six months on the day of your arrival in Thailand. The passport should also have at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

2. Boarding Card

The boarding card of the flight on which you arrive in Thailand is an important document which shows the details of your inward travel, and is examined by the immigration officer. Keep your boarding card safe, and present it when asked for.

3. Return Air Ticket

You need to have a confirmed return or onward journey air ticket for travel within 30 days, including the dates of arrival and exit. A plan to exit Thailand via a land crossing may not be accepted. Carry a printed copy.

4. Confirmed Hotel Bookings

Confirmed and verifiable hotel bookings are needed for the entire period of stay in Thailand. Carry printed copies of all hotel confirmation vouchers or emails.

Any special proof of funds requirement for travel under the visa-waiver scheme as not been announced. However, going by the funds requirement specified for the other countries which enjoy visa-exemption in Thailand, you need to have at least 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family.

The proof of funds, if demanded, has to be shown in cash only. It can be either in Thai Baht, or USD, or another popular currency. If you are planning to stay longer than 15 days, you may like to carry some extra money.

6. Purpose of Visit

The purpose of your visit has to be tourism only. Any type of employment in Thailand is prohibited on tourist visa.

YouTube Video

I have posted a YouTube video on this visa-free travel scheme. You may watch it at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnGYiwdVOOg

This will be the first experience of visa-free travel to Thailand for Indian passport holders, and it is not clear how strict the Thai immigration officers will be. Whether they will add a document verification step before the immigration counter is also not known, though it is a possibility.

I will be traveling to Thailand under this visa-free scheme in December 2023, and will report any additional information based on my own experience. Expect this article to be updated soon.

Thank you for reading. For any more information, clarification, or feedback, please write a comment below. I will be happy to respond.

Hi, do you know if visa free is applicable for multiple entry

Hi Yes, the visa-free policy allows multiple entry for travel by air, as long the policy is in force. However, if you plan to enter via a land-border, then perhaps entry is allowed only twice per year.

How was it sir? I am traveling to Thailand early next week and was wondering as an Indian passport holder. Thank you

Hi Zaheer. I have traveled in December 2023 under this scheme, and just had to pass through immigration. It was quick, took just two minuted at the immigration counter. So, after landing, go straight to immigration. My YouTube video on this subject has all the details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84iZ-Y8zJAs

Thailand travel guidelines: latest rules for entry for Indians

By Condé Nast Traveller

Phuket Thailand

With easy access and visa on arrivals, Thailand has been a perennial favourite for Indian travellers looking for a quick shopping getaway or a longer beach vacay. Now after a long pandemic-induced hiatus, the borders have opened once again and restrictions have been lifted. From March 21st, all vaccinated travellers can enter Thailand with a negative RT PCR test and requisite insurance without having to quarantine on arrival.

So, whether it is a week at a luxury wellness resort or a whirl through the beaches, here’s your chance to plan your holidays to Thailand again.

Here’s what you need to know

All travellers above 18 need to be fully vaccinated to enter Thailand and will have to undergo an exit-screening at the point of departure at the airline check-in counter. Here is the full list of all that is required to be eligible for entry into the country:

  • COVID-19 vaccination certificate and a certificate of recovery for those who have been infected with COVID-19 within three months of their travel date.
  • A Thailand Pass to be obtained here for arrivals via air or land, or a certificate of entry, from the Royal Thai Embassy or appointed Consulate Generals for arrivals by water. Visitors can choose the pass that suits them the past and pick between the faster Test and Go programme or go for the existing Sandbox programme which restricts your stay to a government approved list of areas for seven days before travelling elsewhere. For non-vaccinated travellers there is an option of 7/10/14 days quarantine on arrival.
  • A negative RT-PCR lab for all adults conducted within 72 hours of the travel date. Children below the age of 6, travelling with parents with a negative RT-PCR test, are not required to have a pre-arrival negative RT-PCR test result and can undergo a saliva test on arrival. For unaccompanied travellers between the ages of 12-17 years, a single dose of approved COVID-19 vaccines is mandatory.
  • Health insurance with a coverage of atleast US$20,000/Rs1,52,500 that includes medical expenses associated with COVID-19.
  • Proof of payment for one night’s accommodation at a government-approved hotel including expenses for one RT-PCR test on Day 1 and 1 Antigen Self-Test Kit on Day 5 (this is not required for those who are travelling for a shorter duration).
  • All travellers must download and install the MorChana app via Apple or Android platforms and register their Day 5 test results in case they are staying on for a longer duration.

Travel from India to Thailand

Flights to Thailand are available from most major cities in India and airlines including Air India, Thai Smile, Spice Jet and Vistara are now operational.

Visas Indian travellers to Thailand can either opt for the regular stamped visa in person via VFS or, apply for an e-visa online here . There is also a visa-on-arrival option that is available but will increase your time spent at the airport on arrival.

Thailand's Warm Welcome: Visa-Free Travel For Tourists From India and Taiwan

As the tourist season peaks, especially among Indian travellers, Thailand has exciting news to share. Starting November 10, citizens of India and Taiwan will be able to enter the country without a visa.

This visa-free travel arrangement will be in place until May 10, 2024, with the aim of welcoming more travellers from these countries to Thailand. This update follows Thailand’s earlier announcement to eliminate visa requirements for Chinese tourists, a move especially popular among visitors to the country before the pandemic.

According to a report in Mint , spokesperson Chai Wacharonke explained, “Arrivals from India and Taiwan can enter Thailand for 30 days.” This means that nationals of these countries can explore Thailand’s natural beauty, rich history, delicious cuisine and vibrant culture for an uninterrupted 30-day stay before returning to their home countries.

The report adds that from January to October 29 this year, Thailand has already welcomed 22 million guests, generating revenue of THB 927.5 billion.

Data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand reveals that Malaysians have been the largest group of visitors this year, with more than 3 million arrivals. They are followed closely by Chinese tourists, who numbered 2.65 million arrivals by October 15. South Koreans and Indians also contributed significantly to Thailand’s tourist numbers this year. The temporary abolition of visas for Indian and Taiwanese nationals opens up the opportunity for an even larger group of people to enjoy their vacations in this Southeast Asian gem.

It’s worth noting that Thailand is not the only country offering visa-free entry to Indians. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka also announced that travellers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand can enter the country without paying visa fees until March 31.

How Much Time Does It Take to Get a Thai Visa?

For most Indian nationals, a tourist visa will suffice. In general, you’ll need to provide the following documents for a Thai visa:

– Their passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Thailand

– A passport-sized photo

– A flight itinerary or confirmed hotel booking

– Proof of financial means, such as bank statements or a credit card

The Thai visa process for Indian citizens is fairly quick and easy, and as long as you have all of the required documents, you should have no problem getting your Thai visa approved.

Additionally, if you are applying for a visa online, you must meet the Thai e-visa requirements. The only difference is that you must have the documents, as mentioned earlier, in digital format or as scanned copies on your electronic device.

The Thai government website has a full list of requirements, so be sure to check that before you apply.

Whereas the cost of a Thai visa for Indian citizens when applying online is around INR 5,500 , which includes the visa fee and the cost of processing the application.

Lastly, the visa can be extended for an additional 30 days if needed through the Immigration Bureau/Immigration Office in Thailand .

While the time frame for a Thai visa, when applied through the Thailand embassy in India, can take up to 5 to 15 days to process.

However, it’s always advisable to check with the Thai embassy or consulate prior to applying for a visa, as processing times may vary depending on your country of origin.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Thailand soon, be sure to start the visa application process early so that you have plenty of time to get everything sorted out.

Is there a difference between a Thailand visa and a Bangkok visa for Indians?

There is no difference between a Thailand visa and a Bangkok visa for Indians. Both are simply different names for the same thing. So, if you’re planning a trip to Bangkok, be sure to apply for a Thai visa in advance.

How Do I Submit My Visa Application Online?

Applying for a visa for Thailand from India on the online portal is easier than you would assume. So, if you’re looking to save time and hassle, you can apply for a Thai visa online.

The Thai government website provides a convenient online application portal where you can fill out an online application form and submit it directly from your computer. Or you can even use apps such as Atlys to easily apply for the visa.

However, remember that on the portal, you can only apply for a Thailand visa on arrival, which means you can get pre-approval for your VOA for the trip.

To apply for a Thai visa online, you’ll need to provide the following documents:

  • A scanned copy of your passport photo page
  • A scanned copy of your passport data page
  • A scanned copy of your passport-size photograph
  • A scanned copy of your bank statement or proof of financial means
  • A scanned copy of your flight itinerary or hotel booking

Once you have all the documents ready, you can complete the online visa application form and submit everything electronically.

After the documents are submitted for the Thai visa, you’ll then need to pay the visa fee and wait for your visa to be processed. The whole process usually takes around 3 business days.

Once your visa application is approved, you must print out your visa approval and use it to enter Thailand.

However, if you wish to apply for a Thailand visa for Indians through the embassy, simply gather the documents, pay the fees, and submit the application at the embassy.

But if you’re looking to save some time and hassle, applying for a Thai visa online is the way to go.

That Is Your Guide for Thailand Visa for Indians

We hope this blog post has been helpful in explaining the process of getting a Thai visa for Indians.

Remember, if you have any questions, be sure to consult with a professional visa service or the Thai embassy before you travel.

Weather and best time to visit Thailand: Pack your bags right!

Now that you know everything about Thailand visas, visa fees, required documents, and the online application process, let’s understand what an Indian visitor should take in their bags to travel to Thailand during different seasons of the year .

The weather is tropical , with a dry season, summer, and a rainy season. But no matter what month of the year, the temperatures are usually between 84ºF and 97ºF .

The best time to visit Thailand is the dry season , which starts in November and goes until April . Summer ( March to May ), it's hot and the humidity index rises considerably. If traveling in these months, be sure you don’t forget to take hats, sunscreen, and summer clothes , with fabrics like cotton, and just some coats for milder days.

During the rainy season ( June to October ), the sensation of heat can seem much higher thanks to the humidity levels that in this period are around 80%. So you must pack summer clothes too, but also raincoats .

Places you must visit in Thailand

The country offers beautiful landscapes and it’s a dream destination for enjoying holidays. To help you to plan the travel itinerary , we spotlight some amazing places.

Maybe you have some doubts about the COVID protocols for tourists in Thailand entry (vaccines, tests requirements, quarantine). Click here to read about what the Thai government requires for travelers visiting the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

You'll probably arrive in the country in the capital. It’s a big city, very urban, modern, and cultural, so it is worth the visit. Your itinerary should include the Royal Palace, and the Buddhist temples, such as Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. The Train and Floating markets, which are a little further away from the Center, also offer a fantastic experience. And to enjoy the food, go to Khao San Road, the famous street full of exotic foods.

Koh Phi Phi

Here are the most famous beaches of Thailand, including the scenario from The Beach movie, Maya Bay (reopened for tourists in 2022). The Koh Phi Phi’s islands receive thousands of tourists each year, but the landscapes are memorable. You can do everything by walking or using boats.

This city has preserved nature, cultural activities, and a peaceful spirit. The Buddhist temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the symbol of Chiang Mai and attracts visitors all year. Take time to visit the well-preserved parks, full of mountains, waterfalls, and perfect rivers for rafting.

Kanchanaburi

The city is best known for its dark connection to WWII, especially the construction of the bridge over the River Kwai. But, besides the war museums, the place offers incredible natural landscapes. An example of that is the Erawan Falls, a seven-tier waterfall and emerald green ponds hidden in the thick rainforest.

Online application options may be available for certain visa types in the future, so it’s essential to check the latest updates from the Thai authorities.

What should I do if my Thailand visa application is denied?

If your Thailand visa application is denied, you may consider seeking clarification from the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate General regarding the reasons for the denial. In some cases, you may be able to reapply with additional documentation or address any concerns raised by the visa processing authorities. Alternatively, you may explore other visa options or reconsider your travel plans accordingly.

Periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. In Songkhla, the insurgency is most active in the districts of Chana, Thepha, Nathawat, and Saba Yoi. U.S. citizens are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these provinces as U.S government employees must obtain special authorization to travel to these provinces.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the Royal Thai Embassy website for the most current visa information.

  • U.S. citizen tourists entering Thailand for fewer than 30 days do not require a visa.
  • We strongly recommend that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your arrival in Thailand to avoid possible denied entry.
  • Thai immigration officials or airline staff may ask for your onward/return ticket.
  • Business travelers, U.S. government employees travelling on official business, teachers, retirees, and those planning to stay longer than 30 days should check with the  Royal Thai Embassy about visa requirements .
  • If you overstay your visa, you will be fined. Depending on the length of overstay, you may also be arrested, detained, deported at your own expense, and banned from re-entering Thailand.

We strongly recommend you carry a copy of your U.S. passport identification page and current Thai visa to help avoid detention by the Thai immigration police.

Thailand’s entry/exit information is subject to change without notice. For the most current information, please see  The Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau .

You can find detailed information on vaccinations and other health precautions on the  CDC website .

HIV/AIDS Restrictions: Some HIV/AIDS entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of Thailand. However, these restrictions are generally not enforced. Please verify this information with the Royal Thai Embassy before you travel.

Find information on dual nationality , prevention of international child abduction and customs regulations on our websites.

COVID-19 Requirements: There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Periodic acts of violence in Thailand remain a concern.  In August 2019, several small explosions and related arson events occurred in various locations throughout Bangkok resulting in no deaths but some injuries and minor property damage. Several small-scale bombings occurred near some tourist locations in the far Southern provinces in August 2016 and December 2018. In August 2015, an explosion near the Erawan Shrine in downtown Bangkok killed at least 20 people and injured more than 100. The U.S. Department of State assesses there is a continued risk of terrorism in Southeast Asia, including in Thailand.

If a protest or demonstration is expected to pass near the U.S. Embassy or Consulate facilities,  Embassy and Consulate entrances and functions may be restricted. The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok’s  website ,  Facebook,  and  Twitter  sites and the U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai’s  website ,  Facebook , and  Twitter  sites post information about local events that may affect Embassy functions. Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive security and safety messages.

Far Southern Thailand:  Periodic violence directed mostly at Thai government interests by a domestic insurgency continues to affect security in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla. U.S. citizens are at risk of death or injury due to the possibility of indiscriminate attacks in public places. Martial law is in force in this region.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these provinces. Travel to this region by U.S government employees must be reviewed and approved in advance. For more information on terrorist threats against U.S. citizens worldwide and steps to take as a result of these threats, please see the  Worldwide Caution .

  • Crimes of opportunity,  such as pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, and burglary, occur in Thailand.
  • Violent crimes  against foreigners are relatively rare. However, murders, rapes, and assaults against foreigners do occur.
  • Sexually motivated violence,  committed by either Thai citizens or foreigners, is most likely to occur after time spent at bars, clubs, and parties, on beaches, or in remote/isolated areas. The Thai police response will differ from an investigation in the United States; investigating officials have publicly discredited people who have reported being the victim of crimes . In addition to making a report at the police jurisdiction in which the crime occurred, we advise contacting the Embassy and engaging a local attorney if you are a victim of an assault.
  • When traveling alone,  exercise caution, stay near other travelers, and ensure friends or family know how to contact you.
  • Taxi and “tuk-tuk”  drivers may attempt to charge excessive fares or refuse passengers. You should either request the driver use the meter or agree on the fare beforehand.
  • At the airport  use only public transportation from the airport’s official pick-up area, cars from the limousine counters, or a car from your hotel.
  • Rental scams  do occur in Thailand. Many rental motorbike, jet ski, and car companies will hold your passport until you pay for real or fictitious damages. We advise against using your passport as collateral.
  • Exorbitant bar tab scams  occur in Thailand. Some bars and entertainment venues will charge exorbitant prices for drinks or unadvertised cover charges and threaten violence if you don’t pay.
  • Other scams  involving gems, city tours, entertainment venues, and credit cards are common, especially in tourist areas.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Internet romance and financial scams are prevalent in Thailand. Scams are often initiated through Internet postings/profiles or by unsolicited emails and letters. Scammers almost always pose as U.S. citizens who have no one else to turn to for help. Common scams include:

  • Romance/Online dating
  • Money transfers
  • Grandparent/Relative targeting
  • Free Trip/Luggage
  • Work permits/job offers

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of crime are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by calling 191 or the Tourist Police at 1155 and contact the U.S. Embassy at +66 (0) 2-205-4049 or Consulate at +(66) (53) 107-777. Remember that only local officials have the authority to investigate and to prosecute a crime.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the U.S.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on victim’s compensation programs in the U.S.
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Conditions at the Bangkok Immigration Detention Center (IDC):  Conditions in immigration detention centers (IDCs) where authorities detain foreign nationals who violate immigration laws remain poor and most are overcrowded. IDCs, administered by the Immigration Police Bureau, which reports to the Royal Thai Police (RTP), are not subject to many of the regulations that govern the regular prison system. U.S. citizen detainees often complain of stark, austere living conditions, overcrowding, and unhealthy conditions. Personal security is poor. In addition, the main IDC in Bangkok does not dependably provide adequate medical or mental health care. In 2019, two U.S. citizens died while in custody at the Bangkok IDC. Deportations are self-funded and it may take up to two weeks for Thai authorities to process a case before deportation. Detainees must have funds to purchase a phone card and do not have access to the internet. Prior approval and a security escort are required to visit a Western Union or an ATM machine.

  • Please see the  Immigration Act B.E. 1979  for more information about Thai Immigration violations.
  • Please see the  Department of State’s Report on Human Rights Practices for Thailand  for further information.

Lèse majesté (Royal Insult):  Thais hold the monarchy in the highest regard. Making a critical or defamatory comment about the royal family is punishable by a prison sentence of up to 15 years per offense. As an example, purposely tearing Thai bank notes, which carry an image of the King, may be considered a lèse majesté offense.

  • Prostitution is illegal in Thailand.  Serious consequences include criminal conviction and imprisonment, particularly in the case of child prostitution.
  • Commercial surrogacy is banned.
  • Personal use of even non-lethal military equipment, such as protective vests and night vision scopes, is prohibited.
  • Illegal drugs  carry severe penalties. Expect long jail sentences under harsh conditions, heavy fines, or even execution for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs.
  • Shoplifting  can result in large fines and lengthy detention followed by deportation.
  • Domestic Issues:  Local police are reluctant to become involved in domestic issues. You may call the Family Services Emergency hotline by dialing 1300 from any Thai phone.
  • Possessing counterfeit or pirated goods is a crime in Thailand.  For more information see the  intellectual property section of the U.S. Department of Justice website .

Customs  may enforce strict regulations on Buddha images, firearms, bullets and/or bullet casings, bullet-proof vests, night vision devices and other para-military type equipment, explosives, drugs, radios, books, and recordings, which might be cultural property and/or considered harmful to the public interest.

LGBTI Travelers: There are no known legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Thailand. However, LGBTI groups report that in the case of sexual crimes, police tend to downplay sexual abuse claims from LGBTI victims.

See our LGBTI Travel Information page and section 6 of our Human Rights report for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance. Sidewalks and street crossings are not suitable for travelers with mobility issues. Newly constructed buildings, facilities, and transportation equipment should be accessible by law for persons with mobility issues. However, enforcement of these provisions is not uniform.

Students: See our Students Abroad page and FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: Some victims of sexual assault or domestic violence find that Thai authorities do not handle such cases with as much sensitivity or consideration for privacy as they would expect in the United States. See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

Ambulance services are:

  • not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except for Bangkok and other major cities.
  • Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Medical treatment  is generally adequate in Thailand’s urban areas. In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, good facilities exist for routine, long-term, and emergency health care. Basic medical care is available in rural areas, but English-speaking providers are rare.

Medical tourism  is an established and rapidly growing industry. You should consult with your local physician before traveling and also  refer to information on medical tourism from CDC.

We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medicine for personal use  is allowed as long as the amount does not exceed a 30-day supply and you bring the medicine with you. Do not mail medicine to Thailand without first confirming it will be allowed into the country.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with  Thailand Customs  and the  Thailand Food and Drug Administration  to ensure the medication is legal in Thailand. Always, carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

The following diseases are present:

  • Chikungunya
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Tuberculosis:
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Melioidosis

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Air Quality:  The air quality in Thailand varies considerably and fluctuates with the seasons, but seasonal smog is a problem. In recent years the air quality in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Lampang, Nan, and Samut Sakhon have exceeded Thai and U.S. government daily standards for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) for a portion of the year. In Chiang Mai and other northern provinces, annual agricultural burning, approximately February through late April, and forest fires cause days with unhealthy to hazardous air quality based on the U.S. index. In Bangkok environs, airborne dust and auto pollutants are prevalent in the cooler, dry period (December-February). Anyone who travels where pollution levels are high is at risk. People at the greatest risk from air pollution exposure include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
  • People with heart disease
  • People who work or are active outdoors

For Bangkok and Chiang Mai, U.S. Mission Thailand is reporting the U.S. EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI) calculated from PM2.5 data captured by monitors owned and maintained by the Royal Thai Government. The information and advice on health protection measures to take is available

Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general:

  • Adequate health facilities are available in Bangkok and other major cities but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Hospitals and doctors require payment “up front” prior to service or admission. Credit card payment is not always available.
  • Medical staff at public hospitals may speak little or no English.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery:

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are very limited in Thailand.
  • Although Thailand has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Thailand, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available and professionals are accredited and qualified.

Pharmaceuticals:

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

  • If you are considering traveling to Thailand to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is illegal for foreigners in Thailand, subject to complex local regulation. For additional information, visit the Government of Thailand’s website for information on foreigner surrogacy.
  • If you decide to pursue parenthood in Thailand via assisted reproductive technology (ART) with a gestational mother, be prepared for long and unexpected delays in documenting your child’s citizenship. Be aware that individuals who attempt to circumvent local law risk criminal prosecution.

Water Quality:

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.

Adventure Travel:

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel .

COVID-19 Testing: For the most current list of COVID-19 testing locations in Thailand approved by the Ministry of Public Health, please visit:  http://service.dmsc.moph.go.th/labscovid19 .  Testing is paid for by U.S. citizens.

The Ministry of Public Health provides a list of 44 laboratories approved to conduct COVID-19 testing found  here .

Please Note : Same-day Covid-19 testing is available at most private hospitals throughout Thailand.  Please reference this list of testing locations and contact the provider directly to inquire about COVID-19 testing options, scheduling, cost, and other information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:  The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Thailand.   According to Thai authorities, both private and public hospitals are providing COVID-19 vaccines. More information on a list of hospitals in Thailand is available  here .

The Bang Rak Vaccination and Health Center, the Institute of Dermatology, and the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute are currently providing free bivalent vaccines to non-Thai citizens on a walk-in basis.

Visit the FDA's website to  learn more about FDA-approved vaccines  in the United States.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:

  • Traffic accidents are common in Thailand.  According to the  World Health Organization , in 2018, Thailand had one of the world’s highest traffic-related fatality rates. Bangkok and some parts of Chiang Mai have heavy traffic.
  • Reckless driving:  Speeding, reckless passing, and failure to obey other traffic laws are common in all regions of Thailand. Traffic moves on the left. Some drivers move illegally against the traffic. Scooters and motorbikes commonly drive on the sidewalks during rush hour and other periods of heavy traffic. Commercial drivers commonly consume alcohol, amphetamines, and other stimulants.
  • Accidents involving motorcycles can be deadly . Riders may incur serious injuries when they are not wearing helmets or proper clothing and footwear. According to the World Health Organization, in 2016, 74 percent of traffic fatalities involved riders of 2-and 3-wheeled vehicles. Use of motorcycle helmets is mandatory, but this law is sporadically enforced.
  • Use a pedestrian bridge  to cross the road where one is available, including in front of the U.S. Embassy on Wireless Road and on Sukhumvit Road, where many pedestrians have been killed and several U.S. citizens seriously injured. Look carefully in both directions before crossing streets, even when using a marked crosswalk.
  • If you have a traffic accident,  you should contact your insurance company for guidance in dealing with the other party and the police.
  • Emergency vehicles:  Congested roads and a scarcity of ambulances can make it difficult for accident victims to receive timely medical attention

Traffic Laws:

  • Driving under influence is punishable by law . If you are found to be intoxicated, you could be jailed for a minimum of two years and subject to a fine.
  • Bribes are illegal.  If you are found guilty, you could be imprisoned up to five years, face severe fines, or both.
  • Lack of ID.
  • Not obeying traffic laws and traffic signals.
  • Driving slowly in regular lanes of traffic.
  • If you are involved in a traffic accident, you should contact your auto insurance company for guidance .

Public Transportation:

  • Mass transit:  In Bangkok, the BTS elevated "Skytrain," “Airport Rail Link” mass transit, and the underground MRT systems are reliable, inexpensive, air conditioned, and often faster than Bangkok traffic.
  • Bus system:  Bangkok also has an extensive bus system, but buses can be overcrowded and are often driven with little or no regard for passenger safety.
  • For hire vehicles:  Cities outside of Bangkok typically have only rudimentary public transportation and usually do not have metered taxis. In many cases, motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks, bicycle-powered rickshaws, and pick-up trucks will be the only options available for travelers without their own transport.
  • Smartphone-based for-hire vehicle service  exist in Bangkok and other large cities. Those affiliated with registered taxis, such as Grab Taxi, Line Taxi, and All Thai Taxi are legal, but their affiliated car services are under legal review.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority as not being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Thailand’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Thailand should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Thailand: Single-visa initiative targets long-haul travellers, promotes seamless ASEAN travel

I n recent months, Srettha, who has committed to transforming Thailand from a tourism hotspot into an aviation and logistics hub, has engaged in discussions with leaders from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam regarding the implementation of a Schengen-type visa system. This initiative aims to facilitate smooth and unrestricted travel among the six neighbouring countries, promoting seamless mobility for travellers.

If resorts are to go by, six Southeast Asian nations collectively welcomed 70 million foreign tourists in 2023. Thailand and Malaysia contributed over half of this total, generating approximately $48 billion in tourism revenue.

There is optimism within the tourism industry, as Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former president of the Thai Hotels Association, believes that with a shared visa around, just like the Schengen visa, long-haul travellers can make more streamlined decisions. She also adds that, in order to enhance its appeal, the visa validity should be changed from the standard 30-day period to 90 days.

However, establishing a Schengen-type visa system, which permits unrestricted travel across the border-free zone within Europe, may pose challenges for ASEAN due to its history of slow progress in expediting multilateral policy frameworks and its reputation primarily as a forum for discussions rather than decisive action.

Thailand’s PM Pushes for Six-Nation Visa for Southeast Asia

Alan Woinski

April 9th, 2024

Thailand’s Prime Minister proposes a six-nation visa to enhance regional tourism, potentially extending visa validity to 90 days, with a target of 80 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2027.

  • LinkedIn icon
  • facebook icon

Thailand’s new Prime Minister is leading a push to establish a revolutionary six-nation visa concept that would allow international tourists the ability to travel seamlessly between Thailand and the fellow Southeast Asian nations of Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar and Vietnam . A six-nation visa is seen as a means of making the region more attractive to international long-haul travelers and would likely see the visa validity period extended from the traditional 30-day period adopted in many countries to a longer 90-day period. The six nations in question welcomed a combined 70 million tourists in 2023 but Thailand is targeting 80 million foreign tourist arrivals to its shores alone by 2027.

In the first quarter of 2024, China was the top contributor to Singapore ’s visitor arrivals, with 723,900 entries. The tally was up 481% year on year and was at 75.4% of 2019’s pre-pandemic first quarter. The Singapore Tourism Board said the Chinese visitors made up 19% of Singapore ’s total of 3.78 million overseas arrivals for the first three months of the year. Total foreign arrivals to Singapore were up 29.7% year on year. The Chinese lead in arrivals coincided with the mutual arrangement for 30-day visa-free travel between the two countries, going into effect February 9.

The four-day period encompassing the Ching Ming Festival resulted in 425,428 tourist arrivals for Macau . The most were on the actual day of the Festival, on April 4th, with 136,363 visitor arrivals. These four days actually had more arrivals than the four-day Easter holiday.

Nepal registered a record-breaking influx of 128,167 tourists in March, a 28.9% increase from March of 2023. The tourist season in Nepal typically starts in February, peaks in March and April, and then gradually decreases. 30,698 tourists arrived from India in March with 12,092 coming from China .

The 99 room The Opposite House in Beijing is being closed after 16 years by owner Swire Properties . This was Swire ’s first hotel but they are closing it to make way for an innovative retail landmark in the Taikoo Li Sanlitun area. The hotel had been losing money for Swire since 2015. The hotel will cease operations on June 30.

TFE Hotels has put their stamp on Docklands with the rebranding of the 273 room Vibe Hotel Melbourne Docklands from the Four Points by Sheraton brand. The opening of this harbourside property gives TFE their twelfth Vibe branded hotel and second in Melbourne City in Australia . The hotel is owned by MA Financial Group . MA is hoping this will help them seed the launch of their MA Accommodation Hotel Fund , an open-ended fund for wholesale investors targeting high quality assets. TFE said they will soon announce new pipeline hotels as they celebrate their twenty-first year of operations. Sister property Vibe Hotel Melbourne is launching a rooftop venue on April 12. The Vibe Hotel Melbourne Docklands will give TFE an additional seven meeting rooms in their Melbourne portfolio.

Asset World Corp Public Company Limited has signed two hotel management agreements with Melia Hotels International to develop two hotels in Pattaya in Thailand under the Melia and Paradisus brands. The Melia Pattaya City and Paradisus Jomtien Resort will mark the first time these luxury brands are in Pattaya . The partnership expands AWC ’s diverse high-end hospitality and lifestyle portfolio. The Melia Pattaya City will be located within AWC ’s mega mixed-use Aquatique while Paradisus Jomtien Resort will be one of the first luxury all-inclusive hotels. AWC and Melia already have three operational hotels in Thailand under their initial collaboration. The two new hotels under the new agreement will bring the total number of properties open and under development to six. Melia Pattaya City is expected to open this coming December with 234 rooms, unique F&B establishments, aiming to attract MICE groups and individuals seeking a youthful and hip lifestyle. The hotel will offer a Social Space Club Lounge , indoor fireplace features, cinema room, Jomtien Beach pool, co-working lounge, meeting rooms and ballrooms, and a yard party area. The Paradisus Jomtien Resort , scheduled to open in 2028, will be the first all inclusive luxury hotel in Pattaya , located on a prominent beachfront site in Jomtien . The resort will feature a variety of water sports and recreational activities, including a continuous loop pool, family pool zone, beach club, a rooftop entertainment zone with DJ, sunset view, rooftop tennis and a football court. The hotel will offer 698 rooms, including 654 hotel rooms and 44 villa rooms.

The Hindu reported Blackstone Inc. is looking at investing in the hospitality sector in India , already evaluating two hotels in the southern part of the country with potential buys in the range of Rs 300 to Rs 400 crore. Sources said Blackstone feels valuations are high but they are still looking and an acquisition is likely this year.

Hilton announced the signing of its flagship brand hotel in Lucknow , the capital city of Uttar Pradesh . Hilton Lucknow will be their third property in Uttar Pradesh , expanding their portfolio in India . This hotel will be developed in partnership with Amrit Bottlers Private Limited and will be part of a cluster complex that includes Hilton Garden Inn Lucknow which Hilton already manages for Amrit . Hilton Lucknow is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2025 with 140 guest rooms, event spaces of 17,000 square feet and three food and beverage establishments. Hilton has 26 trading hotels in India and 19 more in the pipeline, putting them on course to triple their India estate to 75 trading and pipeline hotels in the coming years.

ITC Hotels said they have an ambitious goal of expanding their portfolio to 200 hotels from the current 130 over the next five years by opening properties across its brands to capitalize on a boom in business and leisure travel in India . Their inventory is expected to increase to more than 18,000 keys in five years from the current 12,000. Their international launch will be later this month with the 352 key ITC Ratnadipa in Colombo . The ultra-luxury hotel in Sri Lanka will feature rooms, suites and serviced apartments and more than 1,390 square meters of banqueting space. It will have a dozen dining options and include the chain’s Kaya Kalp – The Royal Spa . In the past two years, ITC Hotels has launched 25 hotels pan India .

Japan introduces e-Visa for Indian tourists: From eligibility criteria to application process, here's a complete guide

Japan has streamlined its visa process for indian travellers with the introduction of evisas. here's your quick guide to the hassle-free application process..

Indian passport holders no longer need to carry a physical visa sticker to travel to Japan. From April 1, Japan began issuing eVisas to Indian travellers. The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme allows anyone to apply for a visa electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. This programme allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

Indian passport holders can now travel to Japan with an eVisa instead of a physical visa sticker. (Pixabay)

Under the revised system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global, which is the same process as before. However, one notable change is in the way visas are issued. Instead of receiving traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports, successful applicants will now receive electronic visas. (Also read: Travelling to the USA for baseball game? Check these 5 best hotels near major league stadiums that can save your money )

The e-Visa process requires travellers to present a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile device upon arrival at the airport. It's important to note that internet access is required for this process. Any format other than a digital visa issuance notice, including PDFs, photos, screenshots or printed copies, will not be considered valid.

What are the eligibility criteria

Citizens and residents of the following countries and regions are eligible: Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included in the eligibility criteria. Residents of these countries or regions, with exceptions for those exempt from short-term visas, can apply for an eVisa through the Japan e-Visa website.

How to apply

Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:

Step 1: To initiate the application process, individuals should access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, by visiting https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.

Step 2: Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all visa requirements carefully. Download the application form, fill it out accurately, and print it. Ensure all fields are completed. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the required documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email for your appointment, which will include the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Then, wait for an email notification informing you when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the progress of your visa application online using the reference number provided on your invoice or receipt. Approved applicants for the eVisa will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. However, travelers are required to show a "visa issuance notice" on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.

Step 5: At the airport check-in, display the "visa issuance notice" on your device. The travel agency will furnish a "Visa Issuance Notice" inclusive of a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode using your device and input the required details to access the notice. Tap "Display" to view the electronic "visa issuance notice."

During the application process, individuals may be required to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence for an interview.
