By Daniel Kreps

Joe Walsh ’s James Gang will reunite for “one last ride” with help from Dave Grohl at the all-star, Ohio-themed VetsAid 2022 concert. Nine Inch Nails , the Breeders , and the Black Keys are also set to perform at the show, set for Nov. 13 at Columbus’ Nationwide Arena.

The James Gang trio of Joe Walsh, bassist Dale Peters, and drummer Jim Fox — the same lineup behind the hits “Funk #49” and “Walk Away” — will reunite for the first time in over 15 years for the sixth annual VetsAid concert, which Walsh started in 2017 to raise money for veterans’ services charities.

This year’s VetsAid is a celebration of Ohio rock, with the Cleveland-based James Gang, Dayton’s the Breeders, Cleveland’s Nine Inch Nails, Akron’s the Black Keys, and the Warren, Ohio-born Grohl.

The show will also be hosted for the third time by Cleveland native Drew Carey.

“It all started in Ohio,” Walsh said in a statement. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland, and then the world. Now it is a great privilege and humbling opportunity for me to share the stage once again with my original James Gang buddies and with this absolutely incredible group of Ohio rock legends like Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, the Black Keys, the Breeders, and Dave Grohl. I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honoring our veterans with VetsAid 2022.”

Tickets for VetsAid 2022 — featuring what is promised as the “final” James Gang performance — go on sale to the public on Friday, August 5.

Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails + The James Gang’s ‘Last Ride’ Lead 2022 VetsAid Benefit

If indeed The James Gang are ready to " walk away ," then this is one hell of a "one last ride" to go out on. Singer Joe Walsh is reuniting his '70s band for the sixth edition of VetsAid, an annual benefit aimed a raising money for veterans' charities. And the reunion isn't the only highlight, with Walsh's fellow Ohioans Dave Grohl , Nine Inch Nails , The Black Keys and the Breeders also playing.

The concert is set to take place Sunday, Nov. 13 at the Nationwide Arena in a Columbus, Ohio, with the cleverly billed "One Last Ride" reunion performance of the James Gang highlighting the evening. The lineup that also includes Jimmy Fox and Dale Peters started their career with 1970's James Gang Rides Again album, and the performance is being billed as their final performance.

The evening will also feature a Dave Grohl solo set, with the Foo Fighters frontman returning to the stage for a rare solo gig. Grohl recently joined Paul McCartney onstage marking his first live concert appearance since the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins earlier this year. Grohl will reunite with Foo Fighters and a wealth of special guests at two Taylor Hawkins tribute shows in London and Los Angeles next month. Grohl has an Ohio tie, as he was born in Warren, Ohio.

Likewise, all the other acts on the bill have Ohio ties as well, starting with Joe Walsh who attended Kent State university and began his music career with acts in the buckeye state. Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor has Cleveland ties, while The Black Keys duo of Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach hail from Akron and The Breeders Kim and Kelley Deal are from Dayton.

“It all started in Ohio,” Walsh said in a statement. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world."

He added, “It is a great privilege for me to share the stage once again with my original James Gang buddies and this incredible group of Ohio rock legends like Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys, The Breeders and Dave Grohl. I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honoring our veterans with VetsAid 2022.”

Walsh was a pivotal player in the evolution of the VetsAid concerts. He previously commented , “War is hell for everyone involved. I lost my father when I was a baby, before I could even make a memory of him. I stopped counting the number of friends I lost in the Vietnam War or that came home forever scarred mentally or physically or both. We’ve only just begun to appreciate the long-term impacts on our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. I had to do something and seeing as though rock-and-roll seems to be what I do best, it’s also the least I could do for those who have served and continue to serve our country."

“We’re all in this together as Americans and seems to me lately that people are forgetting that. So I decided to put on a show, raise some money, bring people back together and celebrate our vets… and let’s do it every year,” added the singer.

Tickets for the 2022 edition of VetsAid will go on sale this Friday (Aug. 5) through Ticketmaster , with all net proceeds going to veterans' service charities with ties to Ohio. Learn more here .

Walsh, who began playing guitar in Columbus, wanted an all-Ohio bill for this year's show, which will donate all new proceeds to benefit Ohio veterans and their families through Walsh's nonprofit VetsAid.

“It all started in Ohio,” Walsh said in a press release. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world. Dave Grohl will be making an appearance as the fourth member of James Gang — with Joe Walsh on vocals and guitar, drummer Jim Fox and bassist Dale Peters — marking the first time the band has played together in over 15 years. The performance, dubbed “One Last Ride,” was announced early Monday morning as a part of Walsh’s annual VetsAid concert.

Taking place on Nov. 13 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, the show will also feature sets from Nine Inch Nails , the Black Keys and the Breeders. All proceeds will go directly to veterans’ services charities.

This year’s lineup puts a spotlight on Ohio-based musicians: James Gang and NIN (both fostered in Cleveland); Akron’s the Black Keys, Dayton’s Breeders and finally — Grohl, who was born in Warren. Comedian and Cleveland-born Drew Carey will be hosting the annual event for the third time.

“It all started in Ohio,” Walsh wrote in a statement. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world. Grohl has slowly been re-entering the stage since the tragic death of his bandmate, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins . Hawkins unexpectedly died at age 50 during one of the band’s stops in Bogota, Colombia earlier this year.

The Foos and the Hawkins family recently announced two tribute shows which are set to take place in London on Sept. 3 and in Los Angeles on Sept. 27. Those events will include performances from the late drummer’s friends and influences: Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Mark Ronson, the Police’s Stewart Copeland, Wolfgang Van Halen, Jane’s Addiction’s Chris Chaney, veteran jazz/rock drummer Omar Hakim, Queen touring member Rufus Taylor and Hawkins’ cover band Chevy Metal will play at both shows.

Established in 2017 by Walsh, VetsAid aims to raise funds for veterans’ groups across the country. To date, the organization has raised funds with the help of performances from Keith Urban, Zac Brown, Gary Clark Jr., Don Henley, James Taylor, Chris Stapleton, Haim, Sheryl Crow, the Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Brad Paisley and Jason Isbell.

Tickets for this year’s VetsAid will go on sale (with prices starting at $59.99) on Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. ET.

James Gang to reunite for final show at veterans event with Dave Grohl

James Gang, the band that kick-started the career of future Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, are to reunite for a final show later this year. Joining them on the bill will be Dave Grohl , Nine Inch Nails , The Black Keys and The Breeders.

The show will take place at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH, on November 13, and is a charity event, with money raised by ticket sales being donated to veterans’ services charities in Ohio.

"It all started in Ohio,” says Walsh. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world. I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honouring our veterans with VetsAid 2022."

Walsh's connections to the veterans community run deep – his father, a flight instructor in the United States Army Air Forces, died while on active duty on Okinawa, Japan, when Walsh was just 20 months old.

"War is hell for everyone involved," Walsh old VetsAid on 2017 . "I lost my father when I was a baby, before I could even make a memory of him. I stopped counting the number of friends I lost in the Vietnam War or that came home forever scarred mentally or physically or both. We’ve only just begun to appreciate the long-term impacts on our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

How Joe Walsh and the James Gang Reunited: Exclusive Interview

One of the more surprising recent classic-rock reunions finds Joe Walsh , drummer Jimmy Fox and bassist Dale Peters playing their first shows together in 16 years as the James Gang .

In part, the concerts were inspired by the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins , who was a lifelong fan and grew very close with the band. He could be spotted at many Foo Fighters gigs wearing a James Gang T-shirt or hat while behind the kit. Hawkins even went so far as to pay tribute to the group in the artwork for his music . "I told Joe at one point, in addition to the personal loss, we lost our biggest fan," Fox tells UCR.

The revitalized trio just completed the first of two shows in memory of Hawkins, as part of an all-star lineup in London. They'll reprise that moment at a second star-studded tribute in Los Angeles later this month. Finally (at least for now), they'll headline Walsh's annual VetsAid benefit in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 13.

Fox spoke with UCR in the days following their return to action in London to discuss the initial performance and what's ahead for the James Gang.

How did this current James Gang reunion come together? Well, we had been talking. This is, I think, either the third or fourth year in a row of doing Joe’s veterans charity show – and COVID kicked [in] and all of the sudden, there weren’t any shows. They were all being canceled. We just sat through them, basically. Every year we would talk and say, “Are you going to do this?” “Yeah, let’s do it, man! If there is one!” And then there wasn’t one. This year, when Joe called, he said, “You know, it looks like we might get it done. Plus, we’re looking at Columbus, so it ought to be a little bit special for Ohio.” He said, “I’m sort of thinking of an Ohio-centric lineup. So if we’re good, let’s work towards that.” I said, “Of course we are!” He said, “While we’re on the subject, I’ve spoken with Dave Grohl. You know, there’s two Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts coming up and he wondered if we would be interested in doing that.” I said, “Are you really asking that question?” [Laughs.] I said, “Yeah, it would be an absolute thrill.” He said, “Well, I think we can do it!” I just put it on the waitlist to hear the results and back came [the message] that we were on. That’s really the long and short of it. I suspect that Dave and Joe had been talking. They were tight. As tight as I was with Taylor, Joe was that tight too. It just wasn’t shocking to hear that there might be a chance for us to do it. So we said yes and at the same time, Dave said yes to [playing] Joe’s thing. That put the plans in motion.

What was the rehearsal process like? Everyone started on their own. You know, we weren’t sure how much time we were going to be allotted. We had to be a little bit flexible with the songs that we learned. We knew it would be between three and five. The fifth one at that point would have been “Funk #49” which we would have used as an encore with Dave had it gone that way. But as the time approached, it started to look more and more like time was going to be crucial. As confident as Joe was that we could have the time that we needed, TV took over. All of the sudden, the decisions shifted, from everywhere they were being made specifically to the TV people. It came back to us, “three songs it is.” Joe wanted to take a stand and say, “No, we’re not doing that.” We talked about it a lot and decided that’s not the place to make the stand. You know, it’s out of Dave’s control. It’s out of everyone’s control. It’s in the hands of television. So we thought, “Well, let’s do the best we can to kick ass at three." There wasn’t much question as to which three [songs]. We were pretty confident. “Walk Away” and “Funk #49” were no-brainers, so where’s your third song? “The Bomber” seemed to be the one. Once we got to Los Angeles, we had arranged five days of rehearsal. We had a full soundstage. We wound up rehearsing usually at noon, for four or five hours. We did it every day and I don’t think we took a day off, but we did start late one day. That was as much rehearsal as it was when we were all kids. It was, let’s get into a room, let’s get face to face and let’s get right to this. We worked like dogs.

Dave joined in to play drums with you on "Funk #49." But he was behind you and you couldn't see him. Here’s the interesting part and I mentioned it to the band. I said, “Do you realize that there are 90,000 people out there? I am the only person in this venue who can’t see Dave.” [Laughs.] It drove me nuts. But the reason we set up the way we did is because we had an idea of how we wanted to be on that stage. We wanted to be tight, together and we wanted to be low. We fought a major battle with the producers to get that lower drum riser. We almost threatened to walk. "Look, this is television, we call the shots. The risers are all three feet high and there’s a reason for it and the reason is TV." We took a little walk and went, “Shit, man!” We based our whole concept on the way we used to play [in the early days] at JB’s in Kent, Ohio, in the bar. We wanted to be as close to face-to-face as we could possibly be. We wanted to be at the same level and we didn’t want to spread out. You know, we could have been 100 feet across, but we wanted to be 15 feet across. We wanted to make it like a bunch of guys playing together. We didn’t even use in-ear monitors. We played to ourselves. I bet we were the only band that did. We listened to our own playing, nothing added, nothing stuck in your ears. Just the good old-fashioned stage wedge monitors and that type of thing. We listened to the sound that was naturally being made on the stage rather than that. We had a whole bunch of ideas with what we wanted to do.

I think Dave helped us [resolve the issue], to be honest. Because the next morning, we had our 12-inch riser and it was great. The problem is, with all of those groups and two-and-a-half minute changes, every set of drums was on wheels. Everything else in the backline was fixed. We didn’t see a way to squeeze Dave in on the same line. He kind of had to be where that other drum set was. So he’s behind us, does this bother anybody else? No, because they all have good eye contact. They all have a good direct line of sight to him. Unfortunately, I can’t turn my neck 180 degrees and there was no visual monitor that I could see. At the soundcheck, we talked about it and we smiled about it. Dave said, “Don’t worry.” I said, “Yeah, I suppose you have experience double drumming.” He says, “Yeah, a couple of times!” He said, “Don’t worry, just do what you do and I’ll be watching you – and he was. I thought he did a typical Grohl job – which is to say “spectacular,” especially with one of us not being able to see the other. He just killed it, man. You know how I feel about those guys. It’s his nature. It was perfect.

Watch the James Gang Reunite in 2006

When the band toured in 2006, there was a keyboard player and background singers. It was great to see you guys take the old-school approach and play as a trio in London. [Laughs.] That was an absolute, deliberate result of the conversations we were having. We wanted to go back to that. That’s what we wanted. Now, this is premature, because we’ve got to get through Los Angeles first, but of course, we’re already talking about the Columbus show. Columbus, we’ve agreed, is the proper venue to spread it out a little bit more. We’ve asked Mark Avsec [from Donnie Iris' band] to play on keys and we’ve talked about female vocalists. I don’t think we’ve actually hired anybody. Dale and I tend to leave that to Joe anyhow. Joe’s out where the musicians are, so it’s easy for him to get the right people. Joe says, “Don’t worry, I’ve got the singers covered.” “Oh yeah, who’d you get?” “Well, I don’t know yet.” [Laughs.] But in his mind, I believe now that we’ve got it covered to the point where we’re going to use background singers. They are so valuable in two ways. First of all, it takes some of the responsibility for what’s going on on stage off of Joe’s shoulders, him having to worry about all of the singing by himself. The other thing is, how do you argue with the singer when he says to you, “I could use the help.” That shut me up instantaneously because I hadn’t really thought of it that way.

What made the trio thing special is that we haven't seen that format of the band for a lot of years. Believe me, we heard from plenty of people in ‘06, “Why? What’s wrong with what you did in the first place?” We heard that endlessly from a certain group of people who are purists. They want to hear it the way it was. You know, we’re not arguing that point. We’re just trying to put on a good show. We want to make it as good as we can make it. That’s the only logic I have for ya. I noticed at the London show, they had a permanent set of background singers, who showed up wherever they were needed. I thought, “What an interesting concept!” I wondered if we would have done anything differently, had we known that was available to us – which we didn’t. I think and I trust that we made the right decision to do it as a trio.

It was incredible. It really was. I’m glad you liked it. I’m still so wrapped up in it that I don’t think I have an objective opinion of what we did. I feel as if I got most of my notes right. [Laughs.] That’s about as far as I can go. It felt great playing with the other guys. It felt like we were totally into it. You know, it felt really good, but you don’t hear very well when you’re playing – even if the monitors are good. It doesn’t sound the same through the monitors on stage as it does through the speakers in the crowd. That’s the musician’s lament, you never really know what you’re sounding like out there.

The VetsAid show in Columbus is being billed as One Last Ride . What does that look like from your perspective? The way it was promoted, it looks to Dale and me, as if they were going for the biggest hype possible. When you present it that way, you sort of buy yourself a little bit of insurance that there will be attention, that sort of thing. I don’t think that either Dale or I believe that this is the last round though. You know, maybe that’s just us being optimistic.

I like hearing that. Well, you know, listening to the way Joe is talking, it doesn’t sound like the last dance. It really doesn’t – but at the same time, we haven’t added anything. The crew, we used all Eagles people. We didn’t use a single outside person. It seemed like the easiest thing to do and it was also a guarantee that we would be getting quality people. Mark [Avsec] was just a carryover; he’s done [previous reunions]. [But] they’re like, “Aren’t you guys gonna do a few more shows? I mean, we’re ready and we’re out there!” Well, of course, I don’t have an answer, but plenty of people have their own self-interests in seeing it continue.

JAMES GANG One Last Ride

Cool show this November in Columbus OH

https://www.nationwidearena.com/events/detail/vets-aid

Nov 13 , 2022 | Sunday | 6PM VetsAid 2022 will feature sets from a newly reunited James Gang (Joe Walsh, Jimmy Fox and Dale Peters) for a final performance, or “One Last Ride,” with special guests Dave Grohl, Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys and The Breeders.  Walsh’s vision was to curate an all-Ohio bill for this year’s show. He considers Columbus to be his hometown, the James Gang and Nine Inch Nails hail originally from Cleveland, The Black Keys from Akron, The Breeders from Dayton and Dave Grohl is native to Warren, OH.  “It all started in Ohio,” Walsh reflects. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world. It is a great privilege for me to share the stage once again with my original James Gang buddies and this incredible group of Ohio rock legends like Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys, The Breeders and Dave Grohl. I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honoring our veterans with VetsAid 2022.” All net proceeds will go directly to veterans’ services charities with ties to Ohio; grant applications are open now at www.vetsaid.org/grants. Veterans are important to Walsh, a Gold Star son himself. His father, a flight instructor for the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star (first US operational jet powered aircraft) died while on active duty on Okinawa when he was just 20 months old. Through the establishment of the VetsAid annual benefit concert, he aims to give back to those who have given so much in sacrifice for this country.

Would love to be there. Always liked Joe Walsh on lead AND slide guitar. Saw the James Gang several times in the 1970's.

Funk 49 is a big favorite. Howard Stern show!

Over 1 MILLION 500 thousand views.

Joe Walsh playing Slip Slide Away guitar. Rickenbacker then a Lester sounding good.

Joe Walsh playing about life on the road, limos, mansion you can't stay in if you're always on the road, expensive sports car but loose your license and now you don't drive and staying at parties until quarter to four because it's hard to leave if you can't find the door!

JimSheridan

I saw The James Gang do a reunion show at the Beacon in 2006. Very impressive. Not a long show - maybe 75 minutes - but all killer, no filler, and the sober Joe was singing like an angel. Great display of guitar tone. Most of the solos seemed composed rather than being jams, but they were lovely.

Joe Walsh is a lovely guy. I'll always heard he ( like Berry Oakley) was easy to meet and talk too. Down to earth.

Oh boy!! Oh Lord!! WHAT A BAND!! WHAT A JAM!!!

Put your good headphones on and turn this up!!!

I'd pay several hundred dollars a ticket to see this band live!

These guys plus Joe Walsh have extremely expensive tickets too!! But they are well rehearsed and slick.

Don Henley on drums on vocals. He is a money bags too. Net worth $250 million!  Henley is the fourth richest drummer in the world. Ringo Starr is first!

@jimsheridan

I was there too! Great show, it was nice to hear a few deep James Gang cuts. But "short" is right, I was so used to an ABB show the while I was taking a quick bathroom break I heard them launch into their "Funk 49" closer.

Looks like Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn ... all of Booker T and the MGs?  That's some folks!

Joe_the_Lurker

Wish I was rich because this show would be AWESOME!  I'll prob never go to a show as expensive as The Brothers 50 ever again.  I see 3rd row is only $1,334 each..... plus fees..

jszfunk

Those 3 albums from James Gang during the Walsh era are some of my all time favorites. I wish Joe would get back to that style of rock. Never caught on to his goof ball schtick music.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Got tickets. Will be there!

According to Drummer World,  Dave Grohl who is guesting with the James Gang is the third richest drummer on the planet. Does he even play drums now. He played guitar with the Foo Fighters didn't he or both.

They have Ringo Starr the richest at $300 million net worth. Followed by Phil Collins, Dave Grohl and Don Henley of the Eagles all at various places in the $200 million net worth level. Then the drummer for Metallica at $175 million.

Jaimoe is listed on another site at $2 million and Butch ZERO at his death.

Those drummers worth over $200 million, probably much of that came from song writing and publishing royalties NOT from playing the drums is my guess.

Bill_Graham

@robertdee

I don't know rd, I am sure they make some good coin from publishing but Grohl and Henley must make major $$$ from touring considering the outrageous ticket prices for Foo Fighters and Eagles concerts

@bill_graham Yeah I imagine you are correct. After an Eagles tour all of them probably add a few million to their bank balance from just ticket sales.

I respect Don Henley as a singer, songwriter and drummer and in awe of someone who can be worth $250 million dollars in the music business.

But "Hell would freeze over" before I would pay huge bucks, 100s of dollars a ticket, to see The Eagles:)

Or the Foo Fighters or Bruce Springsteen or the Rolling Stones etc etc.

Yeah the Eagles have been a major recording and concert act since the mid 1970's and Henley was/is a big song writer for that band as well as having a very successful solo career so I imagine his wealth is a combo of publishing and concert revenue.

I am in the same boat as you in that I refuse to pay big money for tix prices being asked these days and as I have gotten older I refuse to sit in nosebleeds just because the ticket prices are cheap. If I have to watch a big screen to see the band count me out.

I have half a dozen concerts coming up in the next couple of months and only one was over $100 including fees. That would be the Allman Family Revival where the tix price was $89 but with the ridiculous fees it brought the price over $100. It is about a 3 hour concert with great guest musicians so well worth it to me for 7th row seats in a great old Boston Theater, The Shubert.

I was considering getting a ticket to see Joe Bonamassa next Saturday at the Mansfield, Mass shed but the cheapest decent seat was close to $200 with all the Ticketmaster fees so I am passing.

There are too many great concerts to go to for reasonable prices, less than $100, to pay the crazy prices for the big name acts now IMHO.

@bill_graham Here is an older version than the one I posted above earlier. Joe Walsh is in it but this is before Glen Frye and Don Henley threw Don Felder out of the band. Joe Walsh later admitted that Frey and Henley run this show. No doubt about it!!

Joe Walsh Kennedy Center honors as member of The Eagles. What a lucky guy I suppose to be invited to join such a hugely successful band.

Note at the beginning of Linda Ronstadt's presentation the audio is cut for awhile for some reason. Said something the lawyers didn't like? Who knows?

Also comment section has a lot of people irritated they didn't mention ALL the original members of the Eagles and Don Felder who wrote the music for Hotel California but was suddenly and swiftly thrown out of the band by Glenn and Don.

@robertdee I honestly try not to speak out of school, say negative things about any band (even ones I don't like) or speak ill of the dead - but I know a guy in the record biz who has met many of the bigs - friends with quite a lot of them.  He once told me that the only two bigger @ssholes than Don Henley and Glen Frey were the two Journey guys.  I remember watching a documentary where Frey volunteered the band to play at a politicians fundraiser (without asking the members how they felt) - Felder made an off-the cuff statement to the politician that enraged Frey to the point where the two nearly got into fisticuffs on stage.  This likely led to the final bad blood between the two.  Honestly, I sided with Felder on this.  Nobody should have the right or authority to volunteer anybody for anything without asking first.  I think Henley's solo music far out-shined that of Frey.  I honestly think that Frey's stuff might've never seen the light of day had he not been an Eagle first.  As with Joe Walsh - the Eagles were lucky to have had Don Felder.  In my opinion ... this is more than just my opinion.  😉

@rusty Yes I imagine you are right. Maybe it's my imagination but Henley and Frey(RIP) always looked like men who were egotistical and jerks. But I do not know that to be the case. Just a vibe from their interviews.

I must give credit where it is due so I acknowledge their talent, dedication and incredible success. Both men are much wealthier than anyone who was ever associated with the Allman Brothers including Dickey.

The Eagles Greatest hits has sold over 25 million copies, more than any album in U. S. history. Well that is what I read. I remember back when I was paying more attention, that album was competing with Michael Jackson's Thriller for all time best selling album with both running neck and neck.

Don Felder was added to the band and clearly was an equal to Frey and Henley creatively. Frey in an interview said Felder would sent him and Henley demos which often admittedly was good music but where and when do you sing?? Frey said they had to work on Hotel California to make it work but did admit the music on that track came from Felder.

I can't remember what got it started, probably the deal you mentioned, but Frey and Felder became jealous and irritated with each other until Felder told Frey on stage when this show ends I'm going to kick your $ss. Frey said something like " No I'm kicking yours and oh am I ready". Frey went to Henley who apparently is all business and controlling, but the two immediately had Don Felder thrown out of the band. Joe Walsh later said that now he has no doubt that Glen and Don run this show.

It is irritating that at this late date Don Felder is ignored and erased from the band's history.

Butch tried to do that to Dickey in the ABB. And leading up to the 2009 40th anniversary Butch told the press that all musicians who played with Duane Allman would be invited including Eric Clapton except one. He will not be invited. Warren and Derek were uncomfortable with that and went to Gregg so Dickey ended up being invited tho Dickey's manager denied Dickey was. But Dickey chose not to attend.

I guess a lot of bands end up on Family Feud.

@rusty Oh it's soap opera time. I found this about the fight. Yep you're right it was about politics.

But they do mention Glen and Felder had not been getting along.

@rusty Original bass player out!! Get out!!

Off topic for Joe Walsh so skip this if you don't like it but here is Butch talking about ABB problems.

Joe Walsh playing some hot guitar!!

I think the reason the Eagles are so much bigger than the Allman Brothers Band and even Van Halen is because like the second version of Fleetwood Mac, the Eagle's songs appeal to a lot of women.

Don Henley is worth more than $200 million and I checked and nobody in Van Halen including Eddie or Z

Z Top is worth as much as Henley.

Great interview with Joe Walsh. A party boy!!

@robertdee Shorter songs!  Most pop songs are 4 minutes or under.  Radio program directors (especially AM radio in the 70's) wouldn't play epic-length material.  The bands you mention (even Van Halen) played, short, catchy, memorable tunes.  When's the last time you heard someone humming 'Liz Reed in an elevator?  😉

Posted by: @robertdee I think the reason the Eagles are so much bigger than the Allman Brothers Band and even Van Halen is because like the second version of Fleetwood Mac, the Eagle's songs appeal to a lot of women.

Well, bigger or richer doesn't mean better.

As @rusty points out, the Eagles had shorter more radio-friendly songs. Their first album had 3 hit singles. They were also together longer to develop their brand (had Duane lived on, I'd wager he'd become bigger than Clapton).

People forget, but The Eagles' first three albums were successful, but it wasn't until One of These Nights that they had a smash hit after over 3 years together ( Desperado and On the Border weren't hugely successful until later). People forget that when Joe Walsh joined The Eagles, they weren't The Eagles we know today. Hotel California solidified them as a legendary FM band before the wheels came off with The Long Run, which, similar to Fleetwood Mac, featured only two members from the original band - Henley and Frey.

@porkchopbob Well of course I agree. There are Eagles shows on YouTube and they are tight, polished and slick but it's like a bluegrass band to me. I've had enough for a few weeks before the show is over.

I completely agree the Allman Brothers Band for me and how the music moves me, is much better.. especially the original lineup.

The top 100 guitarists list compiled by Rolling Stone Magazine some years ago had Duane in second place behind Hendrix only. Hendrix and Duane dying so young and while their careers were still climbing may be why Hendrix and Duane were on top.

But had Duane Allman lived, he would have continued to get better and the band bigger and I agree. Duane would have been bigger than Eric Clapton.

The richest drummer in the world is Ringo Starr and Don Henley is fourth at $250 million. And Ringo and Henley are very good but not the best. I like Butch and Jaimoe better and Steve Gadd too. John Bonham is another. Jo Jones was fantastic. This is off the topic but here is a quick sample of Jo Jones if you haven't see him.

@porkchopbob   Eagles Greatest hits has sold over 38 million copies in the US and over 40 million worldwide making it the best selling album in history!!

That alone would make Frey and Henley extremely wealthy from the song writing wouldn't it?

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Joe Walsh has announced a massive lineup for the sixth annual  VetsAid  concert, benefitting Walsh’s non-profit veterans organization.

VetsAid 2022 will take place Sunday, Nov. 13 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Walsh’s legendary Cleveland band James Gang will headline the festivities. The group’s performance is being dubbed “One Last Ride” and will feature Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl as a special guest.

James Gang may not even be the event’s biggest draw. The “opening acts” include Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys and The Breeders. Each of those bands originated in Ohio, making this year’s VetsAid show one of the biggest nights in Ohio rock history. Tickets for the concert go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 via  Ticketmaster .

“It all started in Ohio,” Walsh said in a statement. “Picking up my first guitar as a kid in Columbus set me on a musical journey to Kent State, Cleveland and then the world.

“It is a great privilege for me to share the stage once again with my original James Gang buddies and this incredible group of Ohio rock legends like Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, The Black Keys, The Breeders and Dave Grohl. I believe in Ohio and look forward to celebrating our musical legacy while honoring our veterans with VetsAid 2022.”

All net proceeds from VetsAid will go directly to veterans’ services charities that have ties to Ohio. For more info, visit  www.vetsaid.org/grants .
