Jimmy Carr at MFC in January

Press Release – Elephant Publicity Jimmy Carr, one of the best-loved comedians in the world, is returning to New Zealand for a national tour in January. Tickets go on sale Monday 27 June at 9am.

Terribly Funny contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes – they are not the terrible things. Jokes are little lies. Nothing more than wonderful, funny, joyful tricks, constructed from language.

Jimmy will be telling jokes to an adult paying audience who’ve got a good idea what’s in store. And there’s no point to the show, save for to make the audience laugh. Having political correctness at a comedy show is like having health and safety at a rodeo. Now you’ve been warned, enjoy the laughs.

Jimmy Carr has been a comedian for over a decade and a half. He’s performed 10 sell-out tours, playing over 2,500 shows to more than 2.5 million people. He’s won the British Comedy Award for Best Live Stand-Up Tour and been nominated for the Perrier Award. His most recent stand-up comedy special was the most streamed on Netflix in the UK in 2021.

His television credits include over 20 series as host of panel show 8 Out Of 10 Cats, 18 series of spin off 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and 10 years presenting Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz Of The Year. He has also hosted three series of Roast Battle on Comedy Central UK and recorded his own Netflix panel show, The Fix, in 2019, with all episodes available to stream now.

The Terribly Funny tour kicked off in May 2019 and will visit every corner of the UK and Ireland before heading off to Australia and New Zealand.

“Jimmy Carr slays …” – Rolling Stone

“Jimmy Carr is a world-class comedian…I envy his brilliance with words” – The Independent

When the Regent Theatre opened on 4 July 1930 it was described as “The Theatre Beautiful”, and that it was creating “an entirely new standard of entertainment.”

With the re-opening as the Regent on Broadway in 1 May1998 that description could still stand.

The 1600 seat theatre was hailed as one of the country's top six movie theatres in the early 1960's. It was one of the largest built in New Zealand and became a landmark in the city as well as attracting national attention.

Today, as a 1393 seat venue, the Regent on Broadway can still claim to be one of New Zealand’s finest performing arts facilities, indeed one of the top four in the country.

Palmerston North – Guide for Backpackers

Nz pocket guide is 10 years old. thank you for trusting us with your trip for over a decade, hikes, bikes and nights to remember.

Day or night, there’s always something to do in Palmerston North. The truly “happening” city can be easily explored by foot or by bike on the multiple dedicated paths and cycleways. Time Out says

The award-winning comedian, writer and television host is bringing his quick wit and one-liners back to Melbourne

Easily one of the biggest stars in comedy's walk of fame, the British-Irish  comedian Jimmy Carr is shipping his 'Terribly Funny' show Down Under for a national tour in February 2023.

Since beginning his comedy career in 2000 at 28, Carr soon became one of the best-loved comedians in Britain for his quick one-liners, deadpan sarcasm, and acerbic wit. He may have landed in hot water more often than not, but try not to rise to his eyebrow-raising humour: it's part of his schtick.

Carr's television credits include some of the UK's longest-running panel shows like  8 Out of 10 Cats, Channel 4's Big Fat Quiz of The Year,  QI, A League of Their Own,  Roast Battle  and many more.  He's performed 10 sell-out tours, played over 2500 shows to more than 2.5 million people, and his most recent stand-up comedy special was the most streamed on Netflix in the UK in 2021.

The 'Terribly Funny' stand-up show sees Carr back on the road with brand new material with a warning label:  it will contain jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they're just jokes - they are not terrible things. Jokes are little lies. Nothing more than wonderful, funny, joyful tricks constructed from language.

Carr will unleash his Pandora's Box of comedy by playing 81 epic shows in 20 venues around the country.  Taking refuge in Melbourne's Hamer Hall, 'Terribly Funny' will run from February 9-21, 2023, and you can book tickets from $89.90 on the Arts Centre Melbourne website.

After a workout with none of the fuss? Laugh your abs off with these regular comedy nights in Melbourne.

Palmerston North (Māori: Te Papaioea ) is a city in the Manawatu district of the lower North Island of New Zealand . It's the home of the largest campuses of Massey University and the Universal College of Learning (UCOL) and also the Institute of the Pacific United (IPU), making Palmerston North a student-oriented city.

Understand [ edit ]

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Palmerston North has a population of 80,000, of which about 18,000 are students. It is the seventh largest city in New Zealand and is the largest provincial city in the region. It is also the home of the Linton Military Camp and has the Air Force Base, Ohakea, close by. The Adidas Institute of Rugby, based at Massey University, focuses on improving the skills of the All Blacks , the national rugby union team, though sightings of them there are rare.

Originally named Palmerston , the city was renamed Palmerston North in 1871 by the Post Office to distinguish it from the town of Palmerston in the South Island. Another common name used by the native Māori inhabited is Papaioea.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Palmerston North is built around The Square . Railway lines used to run through the Square to the station, goods and shunting yards on Main Street west. This proved to be extremely impractical so the station was moved in 1964-66 and the site was turned into a park, known as the Railway Land. The roads radiating outwards from the Square are so wide because they used to accommodate the railway tracks.

Most places are easily accessible by foot.

Horizons Regional Council has local bus timetables .

By bicycle [ edit ]

One of the advantages of Palmerston North is that it is compact, flat and easy to cycle around. The main educational institutions have cycle-lanes from the city centre. The main route to Massey University along Fitzherbert Avenue is packed with cyclists every morning.

'Never forget it': Why comic Russell Howard wants to see his Tauranga 'celebrity crush' proposal again on 2024 tour

UK comedian Russell Howard loves New Zealand.

In January 2021, he became the first standup comic to perform in Aotearoa after the COVID-19 lockdowns when he was granted an exemption to pass through our borders.

But as was well reported at the time, Howard had to spend two weeks in MIQ isolation at Auckland's Stamford Hotel, something which led to him uploading videos to social media that documented his seeming descent into madness .

In February 2024, Howard will tour the motu again, but this time without the additional perk of an enforced stay inside.

"I imagine I'll go back to the hotel and have a little wander around the foyer just to get this sort of sense of memory about the madness. But it was like a David Lynch film in there - it'll be fairly strange going back," he told Newshub.

Howard was in an amiable mood when he chatted about the upcoming tour, but admitted he hadn't even considered his tour team may have checked him back in the same place when he performs in Auckland on February 9 and 10 as a joke.

"That poor room took an absolute battering," he laughed. "Yeah, I hope we don't go back. I wouldn't mind going to see it, but, you know, I wouldn't want to stay there again!"

Howard isn't confined to just playing Auckland - as with his previous tour in 2021, he's performing all around the country at places including Hamilton, Dunedin and Tauranga as part of his Respite tour.

But the upcoming Tauranga date on February 7 is one date that hangs in Howard's mind in particular.

The last time he was there, he was propositioned by a random man on the street.

"I'll never forget it, cause he said 'you're my wife's celebrity crush'. And then there was this kind of long pause. I was holding a coffee, you know, what are you going to do? Then it was just the pause, followed by the 'what do you reckon?' So much went on that was unsaid in that pause," Howard said.

"I'm kind of hopeful that I'd see him again - I'd just f**king love that."

Now aged 43, Howard has been doing standup since 1999, saying he's "a lifer. I am addicted to making people laugh". He has made his name in more recent years through politically-tinged comedy and satire that pokes fun at social issues and inequities.

But he's serious about his craft and told Newshub while he enjoys the comedy, it has to serve its audience above all else, something he says the current proliferation of comedians haven't yet quite mastered.

"It feels like there's so much standup at the minute, which is just comedians saying the point and it gets a massive round of applause. That isn't the job," Howard said.

"The job is you make your point with a laugh. And if the laugh is good enough, they applaud. But you have to have the laugh. It can't just be the applause. When do you get a laugh, it's this cosmic way of figuring out that you're not mad. That's genuinely what comedy is to me."

Howard's last visit to Aotearoa ended up being documented in a series Russell Howard Stands Up to the World, where he went around meeting Kiwis and exploring their quirks. It's something he told Newshub that's been forever imprinted on his DNA and in his show.

"I went to the Coffin Club in Rotorua, which was run by retired women and men, and they made cheap coffins. I had such an incredible experience with them that became - and still is - part of the tour.

"It was just so unbelievably kind and funny and peculiar. And they were making coffins, and really funky coffins. There was a lady who was making coffins for babies, and it was incredibly profound and sad and necessary and it was just in this random building in Rotorua. I love it.

"I think there's a real far away gentle lunacy to New Zealand. Maybe this is my rose-tinted eyes, but when we were there, everyone was happy and saying hello; it's like it just has a nice energy to it. It's a great place to do comedy. People don't seem to take themselves seriously. It's got a lovely sort of vibe here."

But Howard isn't necessarily coming back to the same country he left before. Since his departure, there's been a change of government after Labour , led by Chris Hipkins and steeped in the legacy of Jacinda Ardern, was voted out. There's also a cost of living crisis affecting the country and financial insecurity for many.

"I found it really interesting last time I was there that Aunty Cindy was the saviour for so many people and it felt like people had a connection with her. But then the further I got down in the South Island, you'd go, 'Okay, okay, well, she's not universally loved' and then you kind of get there and it would be the grumblings of people. Then you go, 'okay, that's interesting that there's something building underneath'."

It's that general vibe of global political unrest that Howard's actively sought to calm with his new comedy podcast Wonderbox . Described as "an active antidote to the negativity in the world", Howard spends an hour talking to fellow comedians and celebrities about the things they'd put in a box as reminders that life is worth living.

The likes of Jimmy Carr, Taskmaster 's Greg Davies and Iliza Schlesinger have all been guests - and Howard told Newshub exclusively he's got his eye on trying to coerce some key New Zealanders to get involved while he's over here.

"We're trying to get Jemaine (Clement) at the minute to do it and Taika (Waititi) I'd love, to be honest. Also Henry Winkler's there (in Australia), so I quite fancy asking the Fonz what his are.

"I mean, there's loads. And I also definitely want to get my man Sam Neill on, yeah, he'd be top of the tree. I love him. I spent a day with him. And then he came to the show, and he brought his son and his son's wife. It was incredible. He is an unbelievably talented, charming man."

"You can tell that his brain is, like, just delightful and fascinating. He's one of those guys that you want to spend time in his company. Like in certain worlds, there's these kind of village elders that we all gravitate to - he's definitely one of those guys.

"Last time I was here, I spent two weeks in a hotel and then I got to tour and do gigs when no one else was. Then I got shitfaced in a vineyard with a film star like Sam Neill. I mean, what a life, it was incredible. So, yeah, he definitely would be top of the tree and I'm going to try and see if I can hang out again!"

Russell Howard will play Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Whanganui, Tauranga, Hamilton, Auckland and Hawkes Bay in February 2024.

An eyeful of art in Palmerston North

  • March 9, 2021

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

There is a buzz and bustle to the perky centrepoint of Palmerston North that’s the envy of many a New Zealand city. Boasting a true town centre, framed by The Square, an afternoon stroll through Palmy’s verdant heart laid bare how embracing and embraced the city centre is. It was cranking. Shoppers flocked along the wide footpaths grazing from the inviting retail offerings, locals enjoyed a languid autumn picnic or indulged in games on The Square’s vast grassy carpet, while kerbside buskers revved up the ambience of Palmy’s beating heart.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

The Square’s seven hectares are dotted with a plethora of monuments, fountains and artful installations, ranging from the soaring lantern-crowned Hopwood Clock Tower to the glorious Carrara marble statue of Te Peeti Te Awe Awe, the Rangitaane chief who was instrumental in selling Palmerston North to the crown in 1865. That gracious statue is just one of 32 designated installations that comprise the city centre’s eye-catching Arts Trail. Don’t let the city’s brutalist building binge put you off.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Mercifully, they do not get a mention on the trail map. The city council building would have to be a top contender for New Zealand’s ugliest. Remarkably, this visual atrocity and its soulless Soviet design came up trumps in a civic building design competition in the 1970s! Grab an Arts Trail map from the i-SITE in The Square and you’ll be able to feast your eyes on this eclectic array of murals, mosaics, installations and sculptures on a leisurely 90 minute stroll. The murals along Berryman’s Lane explode in a carnival of colour.

I absolutely adore Paul Dibble’s tribute to the memory of the extinct huia, Ghost of the Huia. Equally commanding is his dramatic work outside the Regent Theatre, where a dainty dancer faces off against the steely gaze of a tuatara. Then there is Numbers, a whimsical, joyful piece, comprised of a series of stainless-steel cubes joined in a loop, to which random numbers in sheet bronze have been riveted on.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Phil Price’s bright blue wind activated kinetic sculpture, United Divided, is another stand-out as is his majestic bronze sculpture, Pacific Monarch. Kids love the giant beetles crawling over the walls of Te Manawa, the city’s landmark Museum of Art, Science and History. This cultural heavy-hitter is a storehouse of the region’s story and taonga, beautifully displayed in the Manawatū Journeys gallery.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

The adjoining Art Gallery showcases a vast stash of works, with regular visiting exhibitions and a space devoted to emerging talent from Massey University. Te Manawa is also feted for its seasonal historic display of Santa’s Cave, which began life in 1918 in the Collinson & Cunninghame Department Store. Complementing Te Manawa’s treats is the neighbouring NZ Rugby Museum, a compelling shrine to the heritage and glory of our national religion.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

It was established 40 years ago as a tribute to the founding father of New Zealand rugby, Charles Monro, who is immortalised in bronze, on the outside forecourt. Home to one of the world’s largest collections of rugby memorabilia spanning 40,000 items, the treasures include the first ‘fern’, the oldest All Blacks jersey, our oldest rugby ball and Dan Carter’s boots. Another star feature is the “Have a Go” area, where you can put your rugby skills to the test, from pushing in a scrum and tackling, to sprinting and kicking. Kids love it – I was pretty useless.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Also sparking a lot of buzz in the city is the new He Ara Kotahi Pathway. Primarily developed as a commuter trail, on foot or by bike, its recreational appeal is not in question. There aren’t many walkways in New Zealand where you traverse dairy farms, forests, pā sites, a military camp, streams and a river in less than nine kilometres, but that’s precisely what He Ara Kotahi weaves together. Just a few minutes from the city centre, a highlight is the 194 metre long bridge that spans Manawatū River. It’s a head-tuner come nightfall, lustily lit up by luminous spheres. Another charismatic city haunt that instantly seduced me is alluring George Street, a bastion of boutique and bohemian chic owner-operated stores, plus a slew of convivial cafes, like Cafe Cuba, Barista and Moxie’s, which have underpinned its gravitational pull.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Taking its name from the city’s first mayor, George Snelson, it was recently given a touch up as the street of famous Georges, with a George-themed Walk of Fame. The 35 George St portraits painted in the on-street parking spots include George Nepia, George Clooney, George Harrison, George Washington, and even fictional characters like George Jetson and George of the Jungle. Dubbed Palmerston North’s Parnell, the beautifully-maintained character buildings of the street accentuate the precinct’s allure. George Street is currently playing host to a 2.5 metre high bronze gnome, who was unveiled in the city last year, as the latest installment to Palmy’s sculptural arsenal.

Foodie finds are thick on the ground in the heart of town, particularly along the hospo sweep of Broadway Ave, which beckons like the world on a plate. I joined the effervescent Friday-drinks crowd who flock to Brew Union after work, which has cultivated a red-hot reputation as a trendy social nexus. It was absolutely cranking. This ebullient industrial themed brewpub boasts 21 taps of NZ craft beers alongside wood fired pizza, house-pressed burgers and lip-smacking sharing plate options. Add to that, a dizzying array of 100 gins.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

I ordered up a Brew Union Golden Ale, which was delightfully crisp with a hint of grapes and citrus, alongside a sensational Buffalo Prawn pizza. Hand stretched to order, Brew Union’s wood-fired pizzas have a crisp and slightly smoky crust, a chewy bite and artfully topped with super-fresh ingredients. It’s an all-round winner of a dining and quaffing destination! www.brewunion.co.nz

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Just a few doors down from Brew Union, another firm local favourite, where reservations are highly recommended, is Haru Japanese restaurant. The all-wooden interior delivers a warm and rustic ambience, while the food is meticulously presented and utterly divine. The dinner set is brilliantly crafted if you happen to indecisive. I plumped for the Tempura Platter, which comprised a generous assortment of prawns, fish, seasonal vegetables and dipping broth. It’s a reasonably priced menu and the service is faultless. www.manawatunz.com

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

Where to stay? An easy walk from The Square, I bedded down at Distinction Coachman Hotel, a landmark establishment that possibly every Palmy family has enjoyed a special occasion at. It’s the go-to hotel for celebrations. I love its lodge-like design, schist exterior and graceful timber features inside, while the expansively sized accommodations are particularly generous. Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, staff are incredibly outgoing and welcome you into their oasis as if you have arrived home. Comprising 73 contemporary-style rooms and suites, all feature free unlimited WiFi, Sky TV, functional desk/workstation area and tea & coffee-making facilities. Some studios offer cooking facilities, if you prefer to dine DIY-style.

jimmy carr nz tour palmerston north

You’ll enjoy complimentary off-street car parking, 24 hour reception, room service and access to an outdoor swimming pool (summer only), spa pool & gym. The hotel also offers a business centre and 4 function rooms that lead to a serene and secluded garden, whether you want to relax – or tie the knot. Enjoy a drink in the Hunterville Bar by the open schist fireplace or indulge in La Patio Café & Bar’s award-winning fusion of Mediterranean and Pacific Rim Cuisine. Dining is available either indoors or al fresco. Plus, alongside the hotel, there’s connecting motel accommodation options as well, catering to all guest preferences. It’s a sparkling establishment that can’t fail to impress. www.distinctionhotels.co.nz/palmerston-north-hotel
