Pics & Vids

Join us on a trek through the deserts of Jordan to reach the iconic ancient city of Petra, one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World . We’ll follow ancient trails through enchanted country which the nomadic Bedouin people and their livestock have travelled for generations.

To get there we’ll trek over dry wadis and through lush canyons, open sandy desert and rocky hamada . You’ll encounter hot springs, Roman remains , crusader castles, Neolithic houses and green valleys fed by crystal streams. The scenery is absolutely mesmerising with the canyons and gorges coming alive under the changing light and glowing in various shades of red and orange. At night, we camp in Bedouin tents and feast by the campfire as the desert sky opens up to the stars. Entering the incredible city of Petra is the highlight of the expedition – the ancient capital of the Nabateans, age unknown but ‘half as old as time’, seems impossibly carved from the rock face. As a special extra we might get the opportunity to visit Petra at night when it is beautifully lit by candlelight.

On our last day we head to the Dead Sea to soak our weary feet at our spa resort and relax in the unique buoyancy of the waters.

Let your incredibly knowledgeable Bedouin and western guides take care of all the logistics and safety while you immerse yourself into this totally unique desert experience.

DAY 1 : Depart UK

You will be met on arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Amman for a rest before the adventure starts!

DAY 2 : Amman - Mansura

After breakfast, we drive in air-conditioned comfort down the King’s Way to Mount Nebo. This 1,000m mountain is a very important Christian site, for it was here, on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Dead Sea, that Moses first caught sight of the Holy Land, having led his people from Sinai. It is said that he also died and was buried here. Mount Nebo offers fantastic views of the Jordan valley and the Dead Sea, with the West Bank city of Jericho usually visible from the summit and Jerusalem apparent on very clear days.

After lunch, we continue driving south via desert highway and have time to stretch our legs at Shoubak Castle. Built in 1115 by the Crusader King Baldwin I, it’s been the site of many an attack and siege, with imposing architecture and stunning views – there’s a fascinating underground secret passageway too. We arrive at Mansura where our campsite awaits us – we often arrive in the dark and so, though your tents will be set up, it’s always worth having your torch to hand!

The drive will take, minus stops and breaks, approximately 4 1/2 hours.

DAY 3 : Mansura - Wadi Feinan

Today our trek begins! The route does change slightly from trek to trek depending on the group and the weather, so the distances and itinerary below might be a little different on your trek, but your guide will let you know of the exact plan in situ.

To start, we trek along the Shara mountains. The barren landscape suddenly changes as we enter Wadi Daphna with its hot springs and palm trees. We follow this stunning canyon, from beginning to end, jumping into deep blue pools and scrambling up and down boulders and through slot canyons. You may get wet feet today, and so trekking sandals might be preferred, but your boots will dry overnight if they do get wet!

Late afternoon we emerge in a broad valley passing palms, reeds and oleander bushes that blossom in the spring. The Wadi Feinan gorge has an interesting archaeological landscape and was an area rich in prehistoric activity. During our walk we may see the remains of a late Roman citadel, copper mines, elaborate water systems and settlements with Neolithic houses. Depending on how far we have walked, we may have a short vehicle transfer to our camp in the dunes.

(Trekking approx. 15-18km. Trekking time: 6-8 hrs)

DAY 4 : Wadi Feinan - El Forn

Our trek today heads through both the Shara Mountains and Wadi Araba. The wadi resembles a small rocky desert, known locally as a hamada, with scattered Acacia trees offering hints of green and providing some beautiful shady spots.

You’ll experience some punchy ups on the hillier parts of the trek today, countered by some longer leisurely climbs, hitting 1,400m at the highest point. The terrain is varied, with chances to scramble as you head up out of the canyon. More challenging than yesterday, today is a fun day to stretch your legs on and your training will come into its own, as it is a hearty day with a good portion of trekking taking you uphill.

From a small Bedouin settlement, we will sometimes barter for a goat and our local Bedouin crew will expertly prepare and barbeque this over an open fire for us tonight.

(This doesn’t happen on every trek and, of course, if it does happen, being involved in this is optional – we aim to give everyone as true an experience of the Bedouin lifestyle, but understand that it’s not for everyone. Do remember that the goats are free range and have been well looked after, and will be humanely prepared. We also can, and frequently do, fully cater for vegans and vegetarians on this and all of our expeditions, so please do chat to us if you have queries!)

The evening is for relaxing or exploring as you wish, there are several small hilltops to climb for an unforgettable sunset over the desert plains on which we are camping.

(Trekking approx. 15-17km. Trekking time: 5-6 hrs)

DAY 5 : El Forn - Gabural Al Waheidat

From our camp high on the plateau we hike downwards into Wadi Feith, a narrow canyon with its year round running stream. We then turn down into Wadi Sahawa, before the trail heads straight up along the ridge-line to our lunch spot at Tabqa Agla. The terrain isn’t challenging underfoot, but with limited shade during the first part of today you will appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the breeze and stunning 360 degree views from the ridge.

After lunch, we take a Bedouin trail with beautiful views over Wadi Araba to Gabural Al Waheidat. Tonight’s camp is in a spectacular spot on the sand dunes, sheltered but with stunning views.

(Trekking approx. 15km. Trekking time: 5-6 hrs)

DAY 6 : Gabural Al Waheidat - Little Petra

We hike down into a fertile valley before ascending an exposed ridge-top. The climb is short but steep and the views from the top are breathtaking. We are more than a kilometre above the desert plains below. After lunch we climb down through a wild valley and past sandstone domes and cliffs to little Petra, giving us our first taste of amazing Nabataean culture. If we have time, we may also visit the Neolithic village of al-Baidah before we reach our camp at El Maisra, near little Petra.

A short road transfer to our campsite is available after our Bedouin crew have made our afternoon tea. Time depending, it’s possible to continue the trail for another 2 hours along the gravel road, winding its way through the sandstone domes to our camp. For many, today has proven the most spectacular day. We will stay at a local homestay this evening, often with local musicians coming to join, and we have the option to sleep inside, or outside to enjoy your last night under the Jordanian stars.

(Trekking approx. 17-20km. Trekking time: 8-9 hrs)

DAY 7 : Petra

Today we continue our trek to Petra. We enter the little Petra reserve and negotiate narrow paths clinging to the side of deep canyons. We have a whole day to enjoy Petra including a half day guided tour of the rose-red city which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Our guided tour of this unique and unforgettable site will include a walk through the dramatic Siq, the narrow and winding fissure between towering cliffs, which we exit through a tiny cleft to be confronted by the awe-inspiring splendour of the Treasury monument, Petra’s most elaborate ruin, hewn into the sandstone rock. Local legend has it that this tomb once stored the gifts of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon. We will explore the royal tombs, a Roman theatre and the colonnaded street, to name but a few of the astounding attractions on view, and we will also walk up or down the 800 steps to view the vast and impressive Monastery (Ed Deir), which enjoys fabulous views over the whole area and a mountain atmosphere.

After lunch, which we will have on site, the afternoon is free to explore one of the most impressive and exciting sites of ancient history anywhere in the world. One option is to walk up to the High Place (Attuf Ridge), once the venue for sacrificial offerings, which gives wonderful views over the Petra Basin and out towards Jebel Harun and Wadi Sabra.

We celebrate the successful conclusion of our trek with an early dinner. If the opportunity is there (depending on the day of the week we visit), we will head back out at about 8pm for a wonderful experience of visiting ‘Petra by night’, which for many is a really spectacular experience in front of the candlelit Treasury.

(The trek in to Petra is approx. 8km, and then the rest of your distance is exploring Petra itself – the distance from the Monastery to the main gate is 8km in itself! Your total trekking distance will be approx. 20km. Trekking time: 4 hours trekking to and from Petra, then another 4 hours in and around the city – though this does depend on how much you wish to explore!)

DAY 8 : Petra - Dead Sea

Petra was carved into the Sharah mountains by the industrious Nabataeans, who grew rich through their control of the frankincense trade routes through Arabia. Petra fell into obscurity about a thousand years ago, while its existence, and location, were kept a closely guarded secret by the local Bedouin, until 1812 when the Swiss explorer John Louis Burckhardt tricked his way into the site.

Today you have the opportunity to have a lazy morning re-exploring Petra. It is such a magical place and we’re sure that you’ll have great time exploring before hitting the souvenir shops or visiting the Petra Museum, a fascinating way to learn about more about the history of Petra.

After lunch, which we don’t include today so you really can do what you like, we will transfer from the hotel in Petra to the Dead Sea Spa Resort (a 3 hour transfer) where you will check in to our wonderful hotel before delving into a delicious celebration dinner.

DAY 9 : Dead Sea

Today is all about rest and relaxation in the Dead Sea Spa Resort. Think mud baths, floating on the sea, jacuzzis and luxurious spa treatments if you wish. It’s the perfect spot for some time out.

If you wish, you are also free to organise and visit the site of St John the Baptist, and be within 10 feet of Israel,  just across the Jordan River.  A large taxi is in the region of 70JD (for 8 persons). We’d suggest allowing a few hours for this extra visit and arrange the taxi with the hotel to come and wait with you. Or, if you prefer to spend some time shopping instead, there is a mall within 5 minutes’ walk of the hotel where you are able to buy souvenirs at a very reasonable price!

DAY 10 : Return to UK

We will enjoy a buffet breakfast at this stunning hotel, before packing up and heading off for our transfer to the airport, and our return flights home.

These are subject to minor changes depending on flight arrival and departure times, weather, group dynamics and fitness and so on, but the itinerary outlined provides an excellent indication of the trek and what you will experience.

Bags & Packs

A 90 -120L duffel bag to transport kit.  A duffel bag is a strong, soft, weather resistant bag without wheels but with functional straps for carrying. Suitcases and wheeled bags are not suitable

A small daysack approx. 25-35L capacity. Your day to day pack that you carry with your daily essentials, fitted with shoulder straps and importantly a waist belt

Waterproof rucksack cover

To protect rucksack from rain

Nylon rolltop bags that keep fresh clothing and other important items like passports and iPods dry in the event of a total downpour that seeps into your kitbag. Good for quarantining old socks.

Please note that many countries are now banning plastic bags. We would always advise buying re-usable nylon rolltop bags for keeping your kit dry (and sustainability).

Small kit bag or light bag

This is for any clothes or luxuries that you want access to at the end of each day, that you don’t want to get lost in the depths of your large kit bag. This bag will be packed up inside your large kit bag and will be transferred from camp to camp with you in the jeeps.

Sleeping Gear

Sleeping bag 3-4 season.

You should get a sleeping bag rated to -5C and choose a sleeping bag that functions within the comfort rating of this temperature. A silk sleeping bag liner will enhance this rating on the coldest nights

Sleeping bag liner (sheet sleeping bag)

Silk is best for keeping the bag clean and you a little warmer and is lighter than cotton

Sleeping mat

Slim mattresses are provided, and are perfect inside the tents. If you do wish to sleep out under the stars, a small, light roll mat is handy to provide some padding!

Wide brimmed hat

Keeps the sun off exposed areas like ears and the nape of the neck

Worth spending money on good UV filters.  Julbo is our preferred supplier

Buy the highest SPF you can find as the sun is strong in the desert

This is the layer closest to the skin and its principal function is to draw (wick) moisture and sweat away from the skin. Wet or sweaty clothing makes you cold and saps your energy as your body compensates to dry it. For the desert consider loose fitting tops, with long sleeves. There won’t be an opportunity to wash them on the trek

These are typically lightweight microfleeces or similar technology that provide varying degrees of warmth and insulation without being overly bulky or heavy to pack

These jackets (and trousers) are thin, highly waterproof and windproof and worn over all other items of clothing. They are your last line of defence against harsh weather. You’ll find these made of Gore-Tex or other proprietary waterproof yet breathable technology. Inexpensive hard shells that aren’t breathable will prevent evaporation, making you sweat intensely and are not recommended, particularly for the desert

Long sleeved T- shirt

Either wicking long-sleeved t-shirts or a trekking shirt will suffice – you want something lightweight to cover your skin from the sun.

Quantity: 2

You’ll want this for the Dead Sea, and also if you use the swimming pool / spa at the Dead Sea Resort.

Do be aware that the Dead Sea mud can stain costumes, so either bring a darker colour, or a second spare dark/old set.

Trekking trousers

These tend to be polyester so they dry quickly after a shower and weigh little in your pack. Consider perhaps a pair with detachable lower legs as an alternative to shorts

Light and quick drying rather than heavy canvas

How many pairs you take is entirely up to you!

Walking boots or approach shoes

2-3 season walking boots, waterproof are handy for if we walk through any streams, and we would suggest they have mid to high ankle support.  full-leather walking boot will be too heavy, so a fabric boot is much better suited for a desert trek. Your feet will get pretty hot whilst trekking so do try and take this into consideration when considering sizing and do make sure they’re well worn in!

For evening use around the camps and in Petra

Trekking socks

You can take a clean pair for each day, or fewer if you wish

These are optional, but can be really comfy to walk in, and dry quickly if you wade through water. If you do bring, make sure they have a comfy ankle strap, with a good grip.

Water bottles / bladder

Water bottles (we would recommend 3L equivalent) or a Camelbak that fits into your daysack

Water purification

We use bottled and/or purified water throughout the trek, but it is worth having this to hand should you wish to fill up elsewhere.

Toothbrush, toothpaste etc.

Travel towel

Travel towels from the likes of Lifesystems are perfect

Preferably biodegradable, these are great for washing when modern shower facilities become a thing of the past

Alcohol gel

A must have for good camp hygiene

Insect repellent

Toilet paper.

Provided on the mountain but a spare in your daysack may be useful if you need to hide behind a rock between camps

Nappy sacks or dog poo bags

See above, toilet paper doesn’t decompose quickly in the desert

Medications

Personal first aid kit.

The 360 med kits are designed to be used in emergencies and akin to an A&E rather than a pharmacy on expeditions, so please come prepared with useful meds for yourself including painkillers, plus blister plasters, plasters, antiseptic, rehydration sachets and any muscle rubs you wish to use. Check out the FAQs on this for full recommendations!

Personal medication

Keep this in your daysack

Miscellaneous

We recommend  Petzl head torches. Bring spare batteries. On your first night camping, we do sometimes arrives after dark, so it can be handy to have your torch accessible at the start of the trip.

Trekking poles

These do often tend to be a personal preference, but can really help with your stability and can dampen the pressure on the knees coming down hill.

Bring plenty of spare batteries and memory cards

Penknife (optional)

Sewing kit (optional).

1 to 2 snack bars per day

Marshmallows

For roasting over the campfire at the end of the day.  You can’t buy marshmallows in Jordan, so don’t forget to bring some with you!

Solar Charger

These are useful to keep electricals charged but are a luxury rather than a necessity, especially on a reasonably short trek – we recommend Power Traveller .

Entertainment

Pack some paperback books, iPod, pack of cards etc as you will have down time at the camps

Documentation

Don’t forget this! Your passport should have at least 6 months validity.  With your passport expiry date at least six months after the final day of travel.

We recommend you take at least US$100-150 (or Jordanian Dinar equivalent) on the trek in small denominations. This will allow for tip money (see FAQs) and any small purchases on the trek. Small denominations are recommended as it may be difficult to obtain change and it will be easier to divide tip money. ATMs are notoriously unreliable in Jordan, so do make sure you have enough prior to arriving in country.

Travel insurance

Make sure you bring a copy of your own travel insurance details, along with relevant contact numbers.

We have a partnership with  True Traveller  and would recommend that you contact them when looking for travel insurance for your trip with 360. However, it is vital that you ensure that the insurance cover they offer is suitable for you, taking your personal circumstances (items to be insured, cancellation cover, medical history) into account. Many other insurance providers are available and we do recommend that you shop around to get the best cover for you on the expedition you are undertaking.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance for your intended trip, to include, at a minimum, medical evacuation and coverage up to the maximum altitude of this trip.

Who will be guiding us?

Our guides are the best in the business. They know the environment you will be trekking through intimately and hold the highest leadership and first aid qualifications to lead groups in remote places. Furthermore they have worked with the local crews for years and established a fantastic working relationship with them. Many speak several languages and they have operated many individual expeditions in the very environment in which you will be trekking to ensure that their enthusiasm never wanes.

We handpick our leaders for their extensive expedition experience, their leadership skills, and for their ability to relate to the local people with whom they work.

Additionally they are supported by our fabulous local Bedouin guides whose knowledge of the local area is quite extraordinary.

Where do I meet my guides?

The 360 team will meet you at the airport. We will let you know where and when nearer the time of departure.

What happens during a typical trekking day?

We will be woken up early each morning at around 6:30 am and given a basic but hearty breakfast. After breakfast we will pack up with the help of the Bedouin and 360 Guides and begin the first trek of the day for about 3 hours. A long and early lunch will be taken to avoid trekking during the hottest part of the day. We set off to walk again for another 3 hours or so and then we establish camp late afternoon for dinner and a well-deserved rest. The itinerary is there to give you a rough idea, but do note this may vary slightly depending on the group and the weather.

Do we visit Wadi Rum?

We have recently have taken Wadi Rum out of our itinerary. Wadi Rum has a fascinating history, written about by T.E. Lawrence in his history of the 1917-18 Arab Revolt possibly better known recently as a very popular filming location and it’s always been a popular stop. However, after a lot of feedback from our many trekkers it was decided that the 3 – 4 hour drive wasn’t warranted for the experience and the preferred plan was to use this time exploring Petra. Sadly due to the commercialisation of Wadi Rum it has simply become like Piccadilly Circus and the reports were that the amazing Jordanian desert trek is far superior to Wadi Rum.

Accommodation

Where will we be sleeping whilst trekking.

The joy of this expedition is that we encourage you to wild camp. Simply take your mattress and find a spot to sleep under a canopy of stars.

If you’re not quite ready for sleeping under the stars, we also have a traditional Bedouin tent. They are big communal handmade cloth tents.

The camps will be set up each day by the support team before you arrive. They are not fixed camps and are set up each day for our specially designed itinerary.

Please note that sleeping in / under the canopy of the Bedouin tent can attract a few extra mozzies and flies.

What are the hygiene facilities in the desert?

Washing will be predominantly wet wipe washes! There is sometimes an option of a tent shower and there will always be a tent loo at camp.

Will I meet the local Bedouins and have time to watch them cook and spend time with them in the evenings?

Yes, you will have a chance to fully immerse yourself in the Bedouin culture. They are fascinating and friendly people and you will be lucky enough to have a chance to see into their lives first hand.

Can I book a single room?

We do have a single supplement available (please see the inclusions and exclusions for full details on costs).

This includes your first night in Amman, one night in Petra and the last two nights at the Movenpick Hotel at the Dead Sea.

During the trek you will be in shared, open Bedouin tents (or sleeping under the stars if you wish!) – chat to us if you would prefer to have a solo sleeping option on these nights also.

Food and Water

What is the food like on this trek.

At the hotel we will be served with an open buffet with several kinds of hot dishes, salads and desserts for dinner. During the trek breakfast will include jams, pitta bread, cheese, teas and coffees, orange juice etc. while our lunch boxes will be classically Jordanian with pitta bread and hummus, mineral water etc. Our dinners will be a nightly open buffet with one kind of hot dish (comprised of meat) a soup, four kinds of salads and dessert with tea and coffee served at safari tables around a fire. On an everyday basis there will be a selection including yogurt, cheese, lebeneh, hummas, fruits, vegetables, rice, bread made from cornflour, juice, jam, sweet potato etc.

Where does our drinking water come from?

We will be drinking bottled mineral water for the duration of the trip.

How often is fresh water available for replenishing during the day?

We have plenty of bottled mineral water that we serve with breakfast and you can take as much as you wish for the trekking sections. At night we put an ample amount of bottled mineral water near the open buffet so there is plenty of access to fresh water.

What equipment do I need for this trek?

A comprehensive kit list has been written for you. If you have any questions about any of the items on it, please do call the 360 office as we are happy to advise.

Do we need to take our own sleeping bags and mats?

You don’t need a sleeping mat as you will always have comfortable thick mats available. These will be carried in the jeeps so there is no need to bring your own. There will also be plenty of heavy rugs should you need to bulk the mats out a little for comfort. It is best to bring your own sleeping bag which should have a rating of -5, as it can get oddly chilly at night. This is all very personal and body temperature dependent. A question to ask your self is do you sleep hot or cold!

What clothing should I wear on this trek?

You will need to bring trousers, shorts, t-shirts, several pairs of socks, jackets and some good sun protection by way of a hat and sunglasses. Check out the kit list , or call us, for full info! For footwear, you’ll need a good pair of well worn in boots to trek in, and a pair of sandals or light trainers to pad around the camps, and later Petra. A lot of people also like to bring lightweight trekking sandals, perfect for combining the heat and walking through the riverbeds.

What clothing is suitable for when we come back from the trek?

When in Rome do as the Romans. Shorts and t-shirts are fine to wear during the course of the day, and you’ll want a swimsuit at the resort and for the Dead Sea too. Evening wear generally tends to be casual: long trousers and casual shirt are fine for all hotels and restaurants. Jordanians are generally quite conservative in their dress code and are generally well dressed despite their situation in life.

Remember that this is a Muslim country and in religious areas, women ought to cover their shoulders and legs at the very least.

How much luggage can I bring?

Fortunately, 4-wheel drives will be the taking the strain for this trip but pack no more than you would want to carry yourself: 15kg is the limit.

What advice do you have on travel bags?

Duffel bags are ideal for this sort of trip. Whatever bag you go for make sure it is robust and has a large capacity. It is far better having a large capacity bag with extra room (after all air doesn’t weigh much) than having a bag too small and finding problems packing your kit. Even having a 100 litre plus duffel bag is not too large.

What should I carry inside my daysack?

A daysack is worn at all times during the trek. The content of this is optional but should include: a fleece (if we take a break later in the day when it has cooled down or weather changes), lightweight waterproofs (primarily to act as wind protection), sufficient water for the day, snacks, camera equipment and personal medication, and we’d always recommend having your (head) torch to hand for any times you’re getting into camp after dark.

How much should my daysack weigh? What size is adequate?

Your day-to-day sack should weigh no more than 3 – 4 kg and a rucksack of around 30L capacity will more than suffice. This rucksack can be filled to the brim with extra stuff when checking in at the airport. It is important that this bag has an adjustable waist belt to transfer the weight of your daily load onto your hips and from here onto your legs so that your strongest muscles do most of the carrying.

What temperatures should I expect?

Temperature on average will be around 22C by day and 5C at night. Some nights in the desert can feel much colder though, which is why we suggest a sleeping bag that goes to -5°C.

Health and Safety

What happens if there is a problem on the trek or if there is an emergency.

Accidents can happen and anyone undertaking these adventures has to accept there is a degree of risk due to the very nature of the challenge. All our guides are in communication with each other by satellite phone and radio. Our local crew are all experienced in dealing with any problem that will arise. Our guides are either doctors or qualified to the highest standard of wilderness first aid and can handle any emergency with the highest level of competency. We have a four wheel drive vehicle that supports us by carrying the equipment and we are in constant communication with it should more serious problems arise.

What vaccinations do I need for this trek?

We advise you to check with your GP surgery or a travel clinic on latest advice about vaccinations and to ensure you are up-to-date.

You advocate bringing a small first aid kit. What should it have in it?

We advocate a little bit of self-help on the trek!

If you have a blister developing, for example, then please stop take off your boot and treat it before it becomes a problem. Your own first aid kit should contain, at a minimum, a basic blister kit, plasters, antiseptic, sun protection, your own personal medication (sometimes your porter might get to camp after you and if he is carrying your medication you may not be able to take it according to the regime you are used to), basic pain relief (paracetamol / aspirin / ibuprofen), a personal course of antibiotics if prone to illness, anti-diarrhoea tablets if you do have a more sensitive stomach etc. Foot powder in your socks every morning is great for preventing blisters. Finally remember mozzie repellent. There can be a few in the evenings. Generally the best approach to take when packing your first aid kit is to include such basic medications as if you would on a family or personal holiday.

Having said that, your 360 expedition leader and/or a member of the local crew does carry a very comprehensive first aid kit which contains a wide range of supplies, and they are fully trained to use whatever is needed for any emergency that may arise.

Do I need to book my own flights to Jordan?

Unless you’ve requested otherwise, 360 Expeditions will be booking flights on your behalf. We provide confirmation of flight times and departure terminal approximately eight weeks before your departure date. Please be aware that flight schedules are subject to change. Please ensure that you have checked flight details before setting out for your flight.

Do I need special travel insurance for the trek?

You must carry individual travel insurance to take part in the expedition. We cannot take you on the mountain without proof of insurance.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance for your intended trip which should include, at a minimum, medical evacuation and coverage up to the maximum altitude of this trip.

Your insurance details are requested on the booking form, however this can be arranged at a later date. 360 Expeditions will be requesting your insurance details 8 weeks before your departure.

Entry into Country

My passport runs out 3 months after the trek, is this going to be ok.

Your passport should be valid for 6 months after the date the trek starts. If it runs out before you may be refused entry. It is also advisable to have a couple of photocopies of your passport in case of loss.

Do I need a visa for Jordan?

Although visas are compulsory for individual tourist entry into Jordan for all foreign nationals; as you are travelling as part of a recognised tourist group, this requirement is waived.

How can I best train and prepare?

Personal fitness is important for this trek, and we have included a training programme which should see you at peak fitness! If you are struggling from day one then you will not enjoy the rest of the trip. Physical preparation does not have to be Herculean: concentrate on cardio-vascular exercise during the week by taking short runs when time allows and try to spend at least 2 weekends a month going on long walks (a decent six hours or 12 miles) carrying a rucksack of around 5kg in a reasonably hilly environment.

Not sure what 5kg is? Put 5 one litre bottles of water into your bag!

This kind of regime will not only prepare your body for carrying minor loads but will harden your body against the big days on the trek itself. In addition it will help you break in your boots and get used to your equipment.

How much spending money do we need?

The amount of money you will need depends on how many items you wish to buy or how much you plan to drink when we are staying in hotels. As a basic rule of thumb £200 (approximately JOD180) should be more than adequate for any post expedition spending.

Jordanian Dinars can be purchased in the UK before travel which may make it easier on arrival as you don’t need to change money.

ATMs can often be unreliable in Jordan. You may want to take more money than you think you will need, and change back any excess money on return.

How much do we tip our local crew?

Our local crew work extremely hard to assure that your expedition runs well. While tipping is not compulsory, it is and always has been very much part of the culture. Regardless of that, once someone sees the hard work the crew provides and realises the small amount of money they get paid in relation to your own wealth, tipping will seem the least you can do to say thank you. As a guide we suggest each trekker tips around £160 (JOD140). The total group tip will then be shared out amongst the whole local team.

Tipping the leader is entirely at your own discretion.

What currency is used in Jordan?

Jordan uses the Jordanian Dinar (as a loose guide 1.00 GBP = 1.2 JOD). However, you should keep an eye on the changing exchange rates. ATMs are widespread in more urban areas but don’t always offer the most favourable rates, and are often unreliable. When receiving local currency, always ask for small bills, as larger bills are hard to change in small towns or for small purchases. The best places to exchange money are normally foreign exchange bureaus, which are fast, have longer hours and often give slightly better rates than banks. Do not accept torn money as it will likely not be accepted.

Electronics

Is there mobile phone reception in the desert.

There should be mobile reception at most of our camp sites but this cannot always be guaranteed in the desert.

Do we need a travel adapter for the plug sockets in the hotel or are they the same as the UK?

No need to bring travel adapters as Jordan operates on the same system as the UK.

How do I avoid getting sand in my camera and phone in the desert?

We’re in the desert, there is dust and sand all around us, even in the air, and the last thing you want is for your camera to pack up half way through the trek so you need to take care of it. For things that will stay in your kit bag most of the time like (hopefully) your mobile phone, hermetically sealing food bags or stuff sacs will be fine for the duration of the trek and are cheap to buy. For kit that will come out more often, like a camera, consider small roll-top waterproof bags from OverBoard (English) Ortlieb (German). If you go the whole hog and think about buying a Peli Case or similar, remember these are quite expensive, as well as quite heavy and cumbersome depending upon the size, although very good.

Prevention is better than cure in many cases: take a soft, small cleaning brush or air blaster to dust off your camera at the end of each day, or should you accidentally drop it in the sand. Remember to take great care when wiping or dusting the lens – blow surface dust off first before polishing it otherwise you’ll end up scratching the lens. If you’re using an SLR, try to avoid changing lenses out in the open, wait until you get out of airborne dust and sand, and keep the lens cap on whenever you’re not using it.

Will my valuables be safe?

While we will do everything we can to provide adequate safety for the group and security for your possessions, the general rule is that if you don’t need it, don’t bring it. This includes jewellery, necklaces, rings and even watches. Your passport and money should be kept on you at all times. As with travel in any foreign country, you need to look after yourself and your possessions and be aware of your surroundings, and this is no different.

Is there mobile reception on the trek?

There is usually phone reception in each of the camps, though do remember we are in the desert, so signal may be intermittent during the trek. However,  we are never far from signal and our leader also carries a satellite phone in the event of an emergency. By the time you’re closer to Petra, the signal is much more reliable!

It was a phenomenal, unexpected and rewarding challenge… [the trip] met and exceeded every expectation I had for the trip! It was truly amazing!

For those obsessed with mountains and clouds this one is for you!

World’s Best Hikes: Petra Through the Back Door, Jordan

By Peter Potterfield

Today's Featured Hike: Dana Reserve to Petra

Round-Trip: 50 miles, 7 days

When to Go: October through April, when desert temperatures relent—a little. Go with Adventure Jordan, the local company that discovered this 50-mile route through the deserts, mountains, and peaks of Jordan.

At the top of an ancient stairway carved into the red rock, the narrow defile leads around a sharp bend, and suddenly you are stopped cold. There stands the exquisite carved façade of Al Deir, better known as the Monastery, perhaps Petra’s grandest monument. And you have it to yourself. To enter the Nabataean city of Petra in a small party at the conclusion of almost a week in the rugged wilds of the Kingdom of Jordan is a far more satisfying arrival than pulling into the parking lot with its idling tour buses ten miles away. That’s what makes the weeklong trek unique.

From the ancient city of Dana, the route leads down to the Feynan Eco-Lodge before crossing the vast arid expanse of Wadi Araba before climbing into the Sharah Mountains past iconic oasis and Bedouin camps toward Petra itself. The off-trail travel through the deserts and mountains can be grueling, exacerbated by the heat, but the hike sets you up to enter Petra in a receptive frame of mind, ready to absorb the mystical qualities of the Rose Red City.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

Insider Tip: Do your research before you arrive. Time in the canyon system of Petra is precious, so it’s best to know what you want to see before you arrive. Besides the iconic sites of the Siq, the Treasury and the Monastery are mystical venues, as are the Place of High Sacrifice and the Great Temple.

5-DAY JORDAN HIKING TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: amman – hike from dana village to mansoura area.

In the early morning, the group will be picked up from the hotel in Amman. The drive from Amman to the starting point of the trek takes about 2 – 5 hours time to get to know your fellow hikers or to have another nap.

Our trekking journey starts with hiking through the diverse landscapes of the Dana Biosphere Reserve. The reserve includes four distinct ecozones and is thus accommodating an astonishing diversity of plants, birds, and other animals. First, we’ll follow a trail along the mountains overlooking Dana Valley, and then descend into al Khashasha Valley A wilderness campsite awaits us on the outskirts of the valley

  • Accommodation: Overnight: Wilderness Camping in Mansoura.
  • Hiking Distance: 15 Km, Ascent: 260m, Descent: 690 m

Day 2: Hike from Mansoura to Furon

Well rested, we will leave the campsite in the early morning and head towards Furon.

Today‘s hike is challenging but extremely rewarding. We will start ascending through the mountains for approximately an hour before getting a glimpse of the beautiful Sharah Mountains and the wide Wadi Araba Desert. That outstanding view will accompany you all the way to your campsite in Al Furon. Enjoy a cup of tea and the great view from the campsite while passing the time until your well-earned dinner.

  • Accommodation: Overnight: Wilderness Camping in Furon
  • Hiking Distance: 14 Km, Ascent 563 m, Descent 170 m

Day 3: Hike from Furon to Ghbour Whedat

T oday’s hike leads past Ras Al-Feid and towards Ghbour Whedat, through some of the country’s wildest corners.

Contouring the Sharah Mountains, we follow a trail comprised of smaller, connecting Bedouin shepherd paths. The bare peeks of black, rugged mountains overlooking the trail, and the precipitous drops of the canyons below make this part of the trek spectacular.

Gradually climbing up the hills, you will uncover more spectacular views over the barren desert below. Then, as you proceed towards the wilderness campsite, the landscape slowly becomes softer, with mushroom-like rock formations lining the way.

  • Accommodation: Wilderness Camping in Ghbour Whedat
  • Hiking Distance: 17.1Km, Ascent 750m, Descent 920m

Day 4: Ghbour Whedat – Hike from Ghbour Whedat to Little Petra

After yesterday’s very remote hike, we will see signs of increasing human habitation while approaching Little Petra today. Passing Bedouin camps, sheep pens, and small agricultural plots you can gain an impression of the living environment of part of Jordan’s population. We will also pass the first Nabataean ruins, including wine and olive presses, aqueducts, and other ancient water infrastructures.

Finally, we will climb up through a canyon walled with soft sandstone rocks, and then down a narrow, steep flight of stairs into Little Petra. The site, also known as Siq al-Barid (Engl. the Cold Canyon), is believed by archaeologists to be a ‘suburb’ of Petra and was probably meant to house traders traveling along the Silk Road. After some time to explore, we’ll head on to our home for the night – hot showers are waiting!

  • Accommodation: Bedouin Camp near Little Petra
  • Hiking Distance: 14Km, Ascent 610m, Descent 560m

Day 5: Little Petra – Hike from Little Petra to Petra

On our last trekking day, we will enter Petra ‘via the Back Door’, avoiding most other tourists.

Amidst high sandstone mountains, a good track leads down Wadi Ghurab. The way then follows a Nabataean route out of the valley, and skirts around the final mountain on a natural rock terrace which has been ‘improved’ for the safety of walkers. It narrows slightly before reaching a hidden plateau high above the impressive chasm of Wadi Siyyagh. Just beyond, ‘the Monastery’ suddenly comes into view.

After walking the last meters to the impressive structure, we can rest for a bit, taking in the view there also is a Bedouin café for refreshments. Then, more Nabataean steps will lead us down into the main site. We’ll make our way through a colonnaded street, past rock-cut tombs, temples, and a Roman-style theatre, to finally arrive at Petra’s probably most famous building – the Treasury. Take your time to marvel at the façade’s detailed artworks. After a final look, we’ll leave the site through the Siq a narrow, high-walled canyon. End of Services by Petra Visitor’s Center.

  • Overnight: Not included.  You can arrange with us or on your own extra time in Petra or transportation back to Amman or Aqaba.
  • Hiking Distance: 13.8Km, Ascent 496m, Descent 519m

Hiking the Jordan Trail to Petra

By Jen Murphy

The canyon leading to the lost city of Petra in Jordan

Until now, the Middle East has been a gaping hole in my lengthy travel resume. Political and religious unrest and travel advisories have dissuaded me from seeing the pyramids in Egypt or discovering the ski slopes of Iran. And other travelers have shared my trepidation: Following the 2011 Arab Spring, the region saw an eight percent decline in visitors, according to the U.N. World Tourism Organization. Jordan, surrounded by conflict, but an oasis of calm (safer than even Germany and Britain according to a 2017 World Economic Forum report ), saw visits to the famed archaeological site of Petra drop nearly 50 percent .

Now, seven years later, tourism is slowly returning to Jordan —and a new cross-country trekking route is helping to shine a spotlight on the region. Billed as the "Inca Trail of the Middle East," the 400-mile Jordan Trail runs from the Mediterranean-influenced villages of Umm Qais in the north to the coral-rich Red Sea in the south, passing through 52 villages en route, as well as two UNESCO-listed sites. The result of an eight year effort by 40-some volunteers, the route is primed to put the country on the radar of travelers seeking an adventure without the crowds.

Trekkers can tackle the 36-day hike in one go or choose one of eight 50-mile-long sections. I’ve chosen the most established route, a flashpacker-friendly stretch from Dana to the “Rose City” of Petra. Planning a trek is surprisingly easy: The Jordan Trail Association, an NGO formed in 2015 to help maintain and develop the trail, has created a website filled with information on everything from licensed tour operators and hiking companies to what to pack and how fit you should be for different trail sections. Yet unlike the well-marked and trafficked trails of trekking meccas, such as Switzerland and Chile , trails in Jordan can be difficult to navigate alone. A guide is recommended and because adventure tourism is still in its infancy here, there are only a handful of licensed hiking guides in the country.

My guide, Ayman Abd-Alkareem of outfitter Experience Jordan , who helped scout sections of the trail, is one of the best. He meets me, and the seven others in our group, at 7 a.m. at the Larsa Hotel in the capital, Amman. (Overnighting in Jordan’s congested political and business hub is recommended to help acclimate to the time change ahead of the journey.) A three-hour drive along the Desert Highway takes us to Dana, a 15th-century stone village situated precariously on the edge of a large gorge. “At least the start of our trek is downhill,” Ayman jokes.

Until I walked across Jordan, I had never fully grasped the diversity of its landscape. We leave Dana and descend 4,000 feet into the Dana Biosphere Reserve’s central valley, taking in four unique ecosystems. Lonely cypress trees give way to Martian-like rock formations. Then the landscape changes to bone-dry river beds lined with palms and oleander, before, finally, becoming rust-hued desert. Our hiking boots stomp over fossilized urchins that once lived in the Tethys Seas, sending electric blue lizards running for cover.

The accommodations along the trail range from an off-the-grid eco-lodge to camping tents and beit al-sha’ar , Bedouin-style tents stitched from black goat hair and outfitted with beds. Part of the goal of the Jordan Trail is to support local Bedouin communities along the route and help preserve the culture of these nomadic desert dwellers. Every stay provided an intimate glimpse into traditional Bedouin life and thoroughly convinced me that Bedouins must have hospitality embedded in their DNA.

Jordan Dana Biosphere Reserve

The Dana Biosphere Reserve.

Feynan Ecolodge , where we stay our first night, has been a pioneer of community-based tourism in Jordan since opening in 2005. The 26-room hotel is surrounded by four Bedouin tribes, a rarity at a time when many Bedouins are abandoning the desert and migrating to cities. All of the employees come from local communities in the Dana Biosphere Reserve and the lodge sources the majority of its services locally. For example, the 300 candles that light the lodge each night are made by women at an onsite candle workshop, and the Arbood bread—a staple dinner accompaniment for Bedouin shepherds—is baked by Um Khalid, a woman who lives up the road.

Feynan’s young in-house guide, Suleiman Al-Hasaseen, was born a few hundred yards from the lodge. He tells me his job at Feynan is the reason he’s happy to remain in the desert. “I never thought people from around the world would be interested in how my family lives,” he says. “I feel a sense of pride sharing our traditions.”

Jordan’s centuries-old coffee making tradition is one that is taken particularly seriously, and Al-Hasaseen introduces us to Abu Mohammed, an elderly Bedouin man with sun-creased skin, who lives a 15-minute walk into the desert and has stayed up late to host us for coffee. Mohammed fills a pot with ground coffee and green cardamom seeds and places it over the fire. When the coffee is ready, he conducts the ritual first tasting and nods approvingly. “The first cup should be hot enough to scare your mustache,” translates Ayman.

Even in the most remote places we are always made to feel at home. On the two nights we decide to camp, four members of the Nawafleh Bedouin family travel ahead of us to set up our tents and prepare meals. Hot sugary mint tea waits for us when we arrive each evening, followed by traditional feasts like mansaf (lamb cooked in a tangy, fermented dried yogurt served over bulgur) and local wines. At Seven Wonders Bedouin Camp , we’re treated to zarb , the Jordanian equivalent of a Polynesian pig roast: Lamb, chicken, rice, onions, and carrots are placed over hot coals then buried underground to cook. The dish is unearthed an hour later and served with chunks of Arbood bread and homemade hummus and salads. Our hosts send us off each morning with heavy lunch sacks and thermoses full of Red Bull-strength tea.

In Jordan, a Community Disrupted Awaits Travel’s Return

Yulia Denisyuk

When I hiked in Nepal and Peru, I found myself distracted by loud backpackers and locals aggressively hawking souvenirs. But the solitude of the Jordan Trail allowed me to be in the moment. Other than the occasional goat herder or group of children, we rarely saw other people. On day three, we pass a man named Springtime Christmas (Rabir Eid in Arabic) who is selling souvenirs from a thatched hut at the edge of a cliff. He doesn’t try to peddle us his camel mugs and sun-faded postcards, but instead plays us a song on his rabab , a goatskin violin, then shakes hands with each of us and holds a hand to his heart as we leave.

When we reach Petra on the fourth day I expect my reverie of solitude to be broken. We arrive through the rarely used “back door.” Unlike the tourist-congested main entrance known as the Siq, the back is completely empty. There are no gates or signs, and only a small ticket office. After walking through wilderness and empty desert landscape, I approach our transition to rose-hued World Heritage territory with nervous anticipation. There’s always the fear that that such a monumental site won’t live up to its hype.

Vibrant red, white, and pink-colored cliffs tower above us like a melting sunset as we follow the trail for 15 more minutes. Then suddenly, we round a sharp bend and Ad Deir, or the Monastery, Petra’s largest monument, appears in front of us like a mirage. This unfathomable 147-foot-tall façade chiseled into the mountainside is all the more remarkable when you learn that it dates back to the first century BC. Typically, the Monastery is the last stop for visitors and requires climbing 850 stone stairs from Petra’s main entrance. The path less followed rewards us with a tour bus-free first impression and an easy, downhill route past canyons and sun-baked plains.

Most visitors spend three hours in Petra. We allow ourselves nearly a full day to explore the Nabataean tombs, amphitheaters, and aqueducts. The next day we enter, as most tourists do, through the Siq, a narrow gorge that’s just ten feet wide in some places. The Treasury’s two-story façade with its intricate Greek-inspired columns would still be awe-inspiring amidst selfie-sticks and bus tours, but we find ourselves eerily alone, sharing the moment with a few camels and a single tour group.

Petra is a marvel and the views and scenery you take in when getting here on foot are worth the blisters and sunburn. But it’s the people you meet along the way that make the experience so special. When I say goodbye to Petra, I pass a Bedouin woman in her souvenir stall. I decline her fossilized stones, but as I walk away she offers me tea for my onward journey.

Our holiday grades explained.

To show the relative difficulty of our holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 12, with 12 being the most challenging. Although we have tried to make our grading system as clear as possible, it cannot take into account your personal interests, abilities or experience. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the 'Is this holiday for you?' section or contact us.

1 - 3 LEISURELY

Suitable for most people in good health, holidays at this grade include only limited amounts of activity.

4 - 6 MODERATE

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

7 - 9 CHALLENGING

Physically challenging holidays, where you need to be prepared before you go.

This excellent trekking holiday in Jordan takes us from the Dana Reserve, southwards to the ancient 'Rose-Red City' of Petra. This trek has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the finest in the Middle East. Six days of trekking takes us through the most rugged country in Jordan, straddling the edge of the great Rift Valley. Starting out from Wadi Feinan in the Dana Nature Reserve, the trek takes us on hunters' trails through deep gorges and across high ridges, climbing gradually from around 300 metres at Feinan to around 1100 metres at the high viewpoint above Petra. Nights will be spent camping Bedouin-style with the local guide and crew. Crossing a final escarpment, we reach the spectacular ‘Monastery', which heralds our arrival at Petra - one of the world's ‘New7Wonders'. The route from Dana to Petra is now part of the ‘Jordan Trail’ which spans the length of this interesting and diverse country. The ‘Jordan Trail’ is an upcoming brand new way-marked trek and the Dana to Petra section is probably the most beautiful and best. This great adventure follows in the footsteps of many explorers and is a magical week of discovery, walking and above all, Jordanian hospitality.

On this holiday we will be trekking through a desert world that has been crossed by nomadic people and their livestock for generations. Nowadays, the area is just about accessible by 4WD vehicles and there are rough ‘roads' to the various camping places that we will use. We will be trekking on scant trails, however, far away from the route taken by our support vehicle. The underfoot conditions will include dry wadis, open sandy desert and rocky desert known as ‘hamada'. There are also sections of narrow trail across rocky terrain including some easy scrambling. The tracks and trails we use are generally not difficult. We will walk for an average of 5 to 6 hours on each of days 2 to 6, covering as much as 15 kilometres each day and with a reasonable amount of ascent and descent. This is a relatively short trekking holiday and at low elevation.

Our Dana to Petra trek is KE’s most sought-after trip worldwide. We seek the hidden trails and off-the-beaten-track routes of the Jordan Mountain Trail, offering a unique perspective of the stunning wild desert landscape.  Our approach into the fabled Nabataean city of Petra is via the little known ‘backdoor’, bringing us to the foot of the imposing Monastery; an unforgettable and intimate moment.

jordan desert trek

Meet at the group hotel in Madaba. A single group transfer from Amman Airport to the group hotel in Madaba or Amman is provided. This transfer is normally in the late evening and a representative of our local agent will accompany the group on the 30 minute journey to the hotel.

Accommodation

We will make an early start for the drive southwards to the Dana Nature Reserve. Here, we meet our trek crew and trekking guide set off on a first day’s walk which will take 6 hours including a stop for lunch. The walk from Dana to Feinan is essentially downhill with the initial 800 metre descent taking place in the first hour of the walk. After this, the route levels out and we can enjoy a far more gentle walk through a wide open valley flanked by the Dana Mountains. Arriving in Wadi Feinan, we set up our first camp of the trip.

This is another 6-hour walking day, which will take us across classic ‘hamada’ landscape – dry, rock-strewn desert, with little sand. The route is quite level and there are spectacular views of the high mountain ranges to the east and the expansive Wadi Araba Desert stretching out to the west. Although the terrain is essentially flat, there are several small wadis (dry valleys), that must be crossed throughout the day. We pass both Byzantine and Nabatean ruins during the course of today’s walk and our local guide will point these out. We set up camp for the night in Wadi Barwas.

Leaving the stony ‘hamada’ desert behind, there is a steep ascent across rocks and small boulders which eventually leads to a twisting goat herder’s track. The initial uphill section takes approximately 3 hours. The track leads up into the mountains through a narrow and dramatic valley with wonderful views eastwards towards the Wadi Araba Desert. This is a steep and challenging section of the route, but extremely rewarding, as we finally reach the top of a high saddle. The descent to the river valley beyond is on a well–defined trail through rocky surroundings. There are views ahead of the next day’s route. On reaching the dry river bed, we turn upstream for half an hour to our camp at Ras el Feid.

We retrace our route along the riverbed, before turning off on a Bedouin trail that traverses a rocky valley side, gradually ascending by way of dry wadis and indistinct cols. This part of the path is particularly challenging, becoming less well-defined, with some easy scrambling to overcome the largest obstacles. This section lasts approximately 2 hours and eventually descends to a riverbed with perennial water. Look out for the elusive ibex in this remote area. The trail continues along the wadi floor and gently climbs up into the pale coloured sandstone mountains of the Petra region. The climb from the valley to the escarpment (where Petra is situated) is gentle and beautiful with a slight uphill climb towards the end across bare rock slabs. We camp at the col of Shkaret Msei’d.

Leaving the campsite at Shkaret Msei'd the scenery changes dramatically. We leave the narrow, confining wadis behind and find ourselves amongst wide-open sandstone hills that have something of the feel of a moonscape. The rock is smooth and soft and the terrain is easy to negotiate, with wide tracks and walkways. The Nabatean influence is apparent here and the first cut steps can be seen. The trail passes through Bedouin encampments, before reaching another rocky area. We descend into Little Petra using a little used route. The splendour of Little Petra provides an insight into what lies ahead at the main Petra site. From the main entrance of Little Petra, we make our way towards Beidha with evidence of modern human settlement in the form of jeep tracks.

We will say goodbye to our local trekking guide and crew this morning and we continue with our tour leader. The walk from here to Petra will take between 2 and 3 hours, with the initial walk across open farmland. The route then follows a well–defined mountain track with fantastic views across to the Araba Desert, some 100 km / 60 miles away. The walk into Petra is magnificent and is the culmination of 5 days of hard walking. The initial glimpse of the top of the Monastery, as it comes into view through the mountains, has a similar effect of the first glimpse of the Treasury from the Siq. We will then trek down from the Monastery and exit Petra by the secondary Siq before re-entering the site through the main Siq so you get to see the most famous view of Petra as though you are entering for the first time. After our sightseeing visit to Petra, we overnight at a hotel in nearby Wadi Musa.

The holiday ends after breakfast. A single timed transfer (3hrs) to Amman Airport is provided. If you would like to extend your visit in Jordan to visit the Red Sea, the Dead Sea or Jerash, please contact our team of adventure travel consultants.

The group will meet at the hotel in Madaba A single group transfer from Amman Airport to the hotel will be provided. At the end of the holiday there will be a single timed transfer from the group hotel in Wadi Musa back to Amman Airport. Anyone may join the group transfers by prior arrangement. Travelling as a group or on public transport saves energy. If this is not practical, we can provide private transfers at an additional cost. Taxis are also available. Hotel contact details and an emergency number will be provided with your booking confirmation.

All meals except 1 dinner are included in the holiday price. Dinner on the first evening in Madaba is not included. Most group members will arrive late in the evening having taken dinner on the plane. For those arriving earlier the hotel has a restaurant or there is a wide range of dining options nearby (allow £10 - £15 for a dinner).

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. If you are on a trekking or cycling holiday, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle ) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Breakfasts on trek consist of bread, a variety of cheese, honey, jams, yoghurt, fruit, tea and Nescafe. For lunch there will be a variety of salads, spicy humus, breads and other dishes from which we can select, or a full packed lunch. Dinner will usually be a soup followed by barbeque or pan fried meat and vegetables with plenty of bread, yoghurt, and humus followed by fresh fruit and tea or coffee. Mineral water is provided. Vegetarians can be catered for.

Whilst we can cater for vegetarians, albeit sometimes with a more limited choice, we cannot always provide special diets.  Due to the nature of some of the trips that we operate and the countries in which we operate them, it can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to cater for a wide range of dietary choices and you may have to supplement your diet with food/snacks from home.  If you have specific dietary requirements please do speak to our sales team and they will be able to advise you whether or not we will be able to offer your specific choice.  Please note that we are unable to provide separate menus and cannot accept liability for any problems arising from special dietary requirements or intolerances.

We will spend 1 night in a comfortable family-run hotel in Madaba and 1 night in a similar standard of hotel in Wadi Musa (Petra). All rooms are en suite. Whilst on trek there are 5 nights supported camping. When camping, we provide 2-man tents, but it is quite usual for group members to find a secluded spot in the dunes (or by the campfire if preferred) and to sleep out under the blanket of stars. There will also be a basic toilet tent and washing facilities. Accommodation is twin share. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single client of the same sex. Single hotel rooms and/or single tents are available for a supplementary cost. If you are planning to extend your holiday, additional nights are available on request.

The group will be led by a professional and qualified tour leader. In addition during the trek, there will be a Beduoin trekking guide and a support crew of one or more drivers who will assist with the cooking.

This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip.

Approximately £100-£125 (or the equivalent in US dollars or euros) should be allowed for miscellaneous expenses and the cost of your visa. You should carry your travel money in the form of cash and you should exchange the majority of this on the day of your arrival at the airport in Amman. Sterling, Euros and US dollars can easily be exchanged in Jordan. The unit of currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JD). You should also allow a total of approximately £70 for tips to your drivers, local guides and trek crew. The cost of the Petra visit is included in the trip price. If you are intending to buy expensive souvenirs, you should budget accordingly (credit cards can be useful in this respect). Also, if you expect to buy considerable quantities of drinks or other refreshments, you should allow for this.

Tips are the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ to your local guides and porters. Tips do not form part of the wages of local staff but are seen as a personal thank you from group members. KE always pays local crews the best rates of pay, no matter what country they are in. For our part, we advise local teams that tips are not a duty or a prerequisite but are a bonus and entirely dependent on the service that was given. For your trek crews we recommend that you give a tip if you feel that their services have met your satisfaction. We recommend that tips be given from the group as a whole rather than individually and as a rough guide we suggest a contribution of £70 from each group member should provide an adequate 'pool' for tipping your crew.

During the trip your baggage will be carried by bus and by 4WD vehicles. The only baggage limit is that which is imposed by your airline. However, Jordan is a hot country and you will not require any heavy clothing, nor are you required to bring a camping mattress. Travelling light will also make transiting airports a much more pleasant experience for you.

For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in ‘Dates and Prices’ table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements.

The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required , and you should have at least 2 blank pages for each country that you visit.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Please ensure that you check for the latest advice before travel. For the most up to date information on entry requirements, please visit the UK Government website .

Visa Jordan

If you are a UK, Canada, USA or Australia passport holder, travelling on a KE organised itinerary (inc pre or post tour extensions), you may now be eligible to receive a free visa upon entering Jordan.  Please look for a representative with a KE sign between the arrival gate and before the immigration desks and they will accompany you to arrange the free visa and passport stamp. The free visa is reliant on us receiving your passport and flight details prior to travel and to you meeting with the KE representative before heading to immigration to join the single timed transfer.  If you have not given us these details or if you do not meet with the representative for the single timed transfer you will have to purchase an individual visa for 40JD. Please ask for further details.

If you are arranging your own pre or post trip accommodation/excursions or transfers we will be unable to arrange a free visa for you and you will need to purchase an individual visa on arrival for 40JD

Other nationalities are included in the free visa scheme, please check with your individual embassy.

If you have a severe allergy please inform the KE office before you travel. We will do all we can to help, but we cannot guarantee an allergy free environment on KE trips. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as 'adrenaline auto-injectors' are not carried as standard by KE leaders and staff. You should inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

VACCINATIONS

You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with routine courses and boosters as recommended in the UK e.g. diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro .

The unit of currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar.

It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on a trekking holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. For this trip you need to be aerobically fit and comfortable with walking up to 5 or 6 hours each day for several days continuously. There are some easy scrambling sections during this trip and although these not difficult or dangerous you should be coomfortable also with a degree of exposure. We would suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to departure. Regular walking in hill or back country is the best preparation but if this is not possible, regular exercise with your preferred sport or pastime such as jogging, squash and swimming, will develop better fitness and stamina. Before departure, we suggest that you try to fit in a number of long walks in hilly country.

The best period for trekking in Jordan is in the late autumn through to early spring season, from October through to mid April. Outside of this period it can be very hot, with temperatures, rising to 40°C in July and August. In October and in April, the maximum daytime temperature is likely to be in the high twenties or low thirties °C, falling as low as 10°C at night. Heading into November the temperatures begin to cool and by December/January, typical daytime maximum temperatures are around 12 - 15 °C falling as low as 5°C at night. In December and January it can even snow in Amman.

As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's ‘Travel Aware ’ campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCDO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: www.travel.state.gov for essential travel advice and tips.

KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe.  Should the FCDO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation.  We receive regular updates direct from the FCDO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground.  If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office.

KE do not encourage the use of single use plastic items. We are ensuring that our agents all over the world are working together to reduce the problem and educate those around them. We are leading by example in our KE office by reducing our plastic use.

Aqaba on the Red Sea, with its warm temperatures, is the perfect place for some relaxation after your adventure holiday. It is said that some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world can be found in here. The lack of strong currents, together with the warm sea temperature, creates perfect conditions for coral growth and this has resulted in fabulous underwater life. You can also swim with sea turtles and dolphins amongst schools of multi-coloured fish or take a glass-bottomed boat ride over the reefs. There is also, of course, the option to simply relax in the sun on the sandy beaches.

Depending on your preferred airline, it may be possible to fly from Aqaba. Please ask for further details.

Wonderful trekking through the Jordan mountains ending in Petra ★★★★★

Superb hiking trip with great variety of scenery ★★★★★

This is a fantastic trip. The hiking is not too challenging, but the scenery was very different each and every day. The food was superb - lots of fresh produce, and the guide and support crew both excellent. Arriving at Petra is a great reward for the hike. I combined this with the Wadi Rum extension after being persuaded to do so by a friend, and I'm really glad I did. This extension was also phenomenal.

A great desert walking experience ★★★★★

Having Oscar as our local tour guide really enhaunced our exprience of walking along the Dana to Petra trail and the Petra site.

This trip was a wonderful introduction to Jordan - combining stunning mountain trails with UNESCO world heritage sites. The food was amazing also.

Everything you could want from a trek.

A great experience, amazing trek, a great adventure with beautiful landscapes and a sense of achievement to trek i.

Petra is rightfully a 7 World Wonder but has really changed. It is a crazy environment with tourists, horse and carts, camels, horses and donkeys competing for space around the site. Petra is huge and best taken in small chunks over a few days.

Jordan Trail

What is the Jordan Trail?

The Jordan Trail is a national hiking trail. It crosses the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from Um Qais in the north to Aqaba and the Red Sea in the south. Offering 40 days of trekking and more than 600 kilometers of trail, it connects diverse landscapes and stunning views with the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Along the trail, you will witness the rolling hills of the north, the rugged wadis and cliffs overlooking the Jordan Rift Valley, the salty waters of the Dead Sea, the rose-red rock structures of Petra, the dramatic sands and towering mountains in Wadi Rum, and the colorful corals of the Red Sea. It is also a journey through the layers of Jordanian history, and an encounter with the country’s people and their cultures, traditions, and cuisine.

Best Sections of the Jordan Trail

Below are some of our favorite sections of the Jordan Trail. If you would like one or several sections with us, you can either click on one of the buttons or have a general look at our Trek & Walk Tours.

Section 6: Dana to Petra

Dana to Petra

The Dana to Petra Trek was recently named one of the best 15 multi-day hikes in the world by National Geographic, and we’d love to show you why! Depending on your fitness level, time availability, and accommodation requirements, we can put together a custom package that suits your needs, or reserve you a spot on one of our “Small Group Adventures” on the Trek that we offer nearly every month – we are looking forward to hearing from you!

Section 7: Petra to Wadi Rum

Petra to Wadi Rum

Upon reaching Wadi Rum, there are lots of options for extensions including scrambling or climbing, camel tours, horse riding tours, and the opportunity to live with the bedouin, experiencing their local way of life. Wadi Rum is awesome and well-visited. So it’s best to stay in one of the many touristic Bedouin camps available in the nature reserve. Within Wadi Rum, it’s not critical to walk the “exact” Jordan Trail route. The important thing is to soak in the beautiful environment of filled with soft-red sand and sandstone mountains.

Whatever your fitness level, time availability, budget, and comfort preference, we can customize a tour for you.

Petra to Wadi Rum Trek – Mini Adventure

Section 1: Um Qais to Ajloun

The north of Jordan is most beautiful in the springtime around February, March, and early April. Directly after the rains that occur almost exclusively in winter, northern Jordan becomes strikingly green. Like the photo for this section, grass grows to cover most open surfaces like hilltops, fields, and empty lots in green. However, that springtime bliss is fleeting. As the temperature warms, the country’s land begins to dry out and brown.  This dynamic creates a stunning contrast in the outdoor environment between spring and the rest of the year.

During the spring, locals and expats like to hike and picnic in northern Jordan on the weekend.  If you are hiking in northern Jordan during the spring on a weekend you are likely to see many Jordanian families grilling and having barbeque picnics. It’s almost an informal national pastime when the weather gets nice to stuff as many family members in a vehicle and arrange the weekend barbeque under a tree, not too far from a road.

Local Communities

Meeting Local Communities along the Jordan Trail

We have also supported local providers to develop new products that they can use, such as developing a story-telling visit. We worked with one of the local families to help them develop a range of local stories they could share with incoming groups, shared over a meal, to educate and inform groups about local life. We tested this with a local international school from the capital, bringing Jordanian and international students to hear the stories.

In time, we hope that experienced local providers will be able to reliably support hikers along the entire route of the Jordan Trail with a range of services. We additionally hope that the growth of the parallel Jordan Bike Trail will help provide a critical mass of hikers and cyclists along the trail zones to support sustainable local businesses supporting trail goers. We look forward to more opportunities to support locals in this goal.

Private transfer from Amman – Mt Nebo – Kerak – Shobak Castle – Mansura (overnight)

After breakfast you will be transferred in an air-conditioned minibus down to Mount Nebo. At 1,000m, this mountain is a very important Christian site for it was here, on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Dead Sea, that Moses first caught sight of the Holy Land, having led his people from Sinai. Mount Nebo offers fantastic views of the Jordan valley and the Dead Sea, with the West Bank city of Jericho  visible from the summit and Jerusalem apparent on very clear days.

Lunch will be in a local restaurant near the imposing Crusader castle of Kerak. This is the largest and best-preserved of the Crusader Castles in the region. It was built in 1132 by Baldwin of Jerusalem and sits on top of a steep outcrop, an almost impregnable position. It became famous at the time of the Crusades as one of the chain of fortresses used in the Holy War against Islam. From here you will continue your road journey south enjoying the fantastic views over magnificent Wadi Araba before briefly stretching your legs at Shobak Castle. You will then arrive at Mansura where your campsite awaits and dinner will be served.

Trek Mansura – Wadi Gwair – Wadi Feynan

Today your trek will start along the impressive Shara mountains. The barren landscape then changes as you enter Wadi Gwair and wind your way through to emerge in the late afternoon in a broad valley. You will pass palms, reeds and oleander bushes that blossom in the spring. The Wadi Feinan gorge has an interesting archaeological landscape and was an area rich in prehistoric activity. Your route will take you past the remains of a late Roman citadel, copper mines, elaborate water systems and settlements with Neolithic houses, some even preserved to two storeys. The end of the day will see you trek into your campsite ready for a well deserved meal and a night camped under the stars.

Included Accommodation: Bedouin camp  Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Trek Wadi Feynan – Hamada – Wadi Abu Sakakeen

Following breakfast in camp, your trek follows the outskirts of the Shara Mountains and through the Wadi Araba, which is like a small rocky desert called a Hamada with scattered Acacia trees. The views across the wadi, part of the Great Rift Valley, are an irresistible distraction, and looking back you will be in ore of the vast panoramic landscape which stretches for miles.

On reaching camp, there are several small hilltops to climb for an unforgettable sunset over the desert plains on which you are camping.

Following breakfast in camp, today’s route takes you into Wadi Feith, a narrow canyon with its year round running stream. From here you will then venture down into Wadi Sahawa. The trail then heads up to your lunch spot at Tabqa Agla. After lunch you will take a Bedouin trail with beautiful views over Wadi Araba to Gabur Al Waheidat. Tonight’s camp is on a spectacular pass from which you can see the whole of the route we trekked so far giving you a huge sense of achievement.

Trek Gabur Al Waheidat – Alfarsh – El Maisra

Following breakfast in camp, you will hike down into a fertile green valley before ascending an exposed ridge-top. The climb is short but steep and the views from the top are jaw-dropping. You are an impressive kilometre above the desert plains below. After lunch your route descends down through a wild valley and past sandstone domes and cliffs to little Petra. This gives you your first taste of the amazing Nabataean culture. There’s time to visit the Neolithic village of al-Baidah and then enjoy afternoon tea made by your Bedouin crew.

The trail then makes it way along a gravel road winding its way through the sandstone domes to camp at El Maisra near little Petra. For many today has proven the most spectacular day. Tonight is your last night sleeping in the Bedouin tents or under the blanket of the night sky.

Trek to Petra and free afternoon to explor e

Following your last breakfast in the desert you will continue your trek to Petra. You will enter little Petra reserve and negotiate narrow paths clinging to the side of deep canyons. You will have a whole day to enjoy Petra including a halfway guided tour of the rose-red city which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra was carved into the Sharah Mountains by the industrious Nabataeans, who grew rich through their control of the frankincense trade routes through Arabia. Petra fell into obscurity about a thousand years ago, while its existence and location, were kept a closely guarded secret by the local Bedouin, until 1812 when the Swiss explorer John Louis Burckhardt tricked his way into the site.

Your guided tour of this unique and unforgettable site starts with a walk through the Siq, the narrow and winding fissure between towering cliffs, which you will exit through a tiny cleft to be confronted by the awe-inspiring splendour of the Treasury monument, Petra’s most elaborate ruin, sculpted into the sandstone rock. Local legend has it that this tomb once stored the gifts of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon. You will continue to explore the royal tombs, a roman theatre and the colonnaded street to name but a few of the astounding attractions on view. Walking up the 800 steps you will be greeted with an amazing view of the vast and impressive Monastery (Ed Deir) and extending to more views over the whole area.

The afternoon is free for you to further explore one of the most impressive and exciting sites of ancient history anywhere in the world. One option is that you can walk up to the High Place (Attuf Ridge), once the venue for sacrificial offerings, which gives wonderful views over the Petra Basin and out towards Jebel Harun and Wadi Sabra.

Included Accommodation: Hotel (twin share basis – share & save) Meals: Breakfast

Private transfer from Petra – Dead Sea with free time

Leaving the desert and the ancient city of Petra behind, you will head to the Dead Sea which is one of the most fascinating places on earth.  Here you will have free time to experience the effortless floating in the sea or simply cooling off in the hotel swimming pool.  This evening there will be a group dinner to celebrate the completion of your epic desert trek in Jordan.

Heading into November the temperatures begin to cool and by December/January, typical daytime maximum temperatures are around 12 – 15 °C falling as low as 5°C at night.

In 2021, the important month of Ramadan will be in progress from 12th April – 11th May and in 2022, from 2nd April – 1st May. Eid ul-Fitr festival will be held directly at its conclusion for 3 – 4 days.

Ramadan is a festival of sacrifice where the devout refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours. During Ramadan, business hours are shortened, including opening hours at some tourist attractions. Alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and many restaurants will be closed.

While you should expect some delays and inconveniences during this period, the month is a fantastic opportunity to travel in a Muslim country and witness this unique period, particularly the nightly celebrations when the sun sets and the fast is broken. Please note that although the Eid ul-Fitr festival can also be a fascinating time to travel it’s a period of national holiday. Most government offices and businesses will be closed and some tourist site opening hours may be affected.

Hotels (3 nights twin/triple share rooms) and desert camp (5 nights)

You will spend 3 nights in hotels. The hotels for Amman and Petra are 3-star hotels and for your final night at the Dead Sea you will stay in a 4-star hotel with a swimming pool. All rooms are on a twin share basis and have ensuite facilities. Some hotels have more facilities than others however it is always good to keep in mind that the star rating in Jordan is quite different to what you may expect at home.  Sometimes we may use less centrally located hotels in the interests of comfort.

Accommodation in Petra is limited and demands on the infrastructure are high; this creates occasional problems with hot water and plumbing for all hotels.  In general, the hotels in Petra are of an older style and more basic in comparison with the rest of Jordan.

Single room supplements are available for this trip for the hotel stays however we are unable to guarantee availability. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.

Traditional Bedouin tents will be set up at your campsite and smaller tents are provided for sleeping. You are also welcome to sleep out under the stars as well. Each campsite will be set up prior to your arrival. Whilst camping please be aware that although some campsites have plumbed toilets and running water, there are no showers and facilities are basic, however this is part of the experience and a great opportunity to switch off from the digital world. The campsites also provide you with the chance to immerse yourself in the Bedouin culture and lifestyle.

The food provided is plentiful, often local in style and freshly-cooked, and will give you plenty of energy. Lunch will varying from a buffet-style lunch-stop to packed lunches. Dinners are generally eaten in camp or at the hotel, depending on accommodation. In some regions there may be less variety than you are used to, and in others fresh meat or produce can be harder to come by.

Any meals not included are listed in the itinerary and are generally on travel days or where there is access to local restaurants, giving you the opportunity to explore and try other culinary experiences and support local businesses! There is always something to suit different budgets.

Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually a problem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expect as greater variety as you would have at home – at times you will be in very rural or remote areas and among people of a different culture who may not understand your requirements, however willing they are to help.

If you know there are plenty of foods you cannot eat we strongly recommend you bring extra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Please feel free to speak to us if you have any further queries or questions.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. Whilst trekking, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as your free Adventurous Ewe Water-To-Go bottle which you will receive on departure) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here .

Adventurous Ewe trekkers will receive a free Water-to-Go bottle when departing for our Jordan Trek, and better still, 15% of the purchase value for replacement filters will be donated to our environmental charity partner, Cool Earth.

Please help us reduce the volume of single use plastic in this pristine environment.

Deposit of £175 per person is required on booking. Remaining balance of £1350 per person is due for payment no later than 5 weeks prior to the trip start date.

Please note, if you need to change your booking 60 days or more before the start date you can make flexible date change, subject to availability, without incurring any admin costs. If you need to cancel your booking 60 days or more before the event start date, you will be issued with a credit note to the value of your payment that you can use for another event of your choice, subject to availability.

You are welcome to fundraise for a charity of your choice if you wish to do so. All sponsorship monies are to be sent directly to your chosen charity.

All your trip info will be sent to you through a travel mobile app via Vamoos which is free to download. You will receive an email from Adventurous Ewe with your personalised log in code for this app.

jordan desert trek

The Desert in Jordan

For those who really wish to leave the city life behind and escape into the wilderness, the desert in Jordan is certainly the place for you. Jordan is home to a plethora of desert both to the east and the south. For thrill-seeking adventures, visitors can take on jeep rides, mountain climbing, and overnight camping. The city of Aqaba is just a short drive away and is well connected with regular buses, taxis and tour operators to suit all budgets and timeframes.

The desert in Jordan is spectacular

Where is The Desert in Jordan?

Nestled less than an hour away from the coastal city of Aqaba lies Wadi Rum ; the gateway to the Jordanian desert. Wadi Rum is the most visitor-friendly section of the desert in Jordan with plenty of activities and excursions to choose from. It is easy to get to and the coastal city of Aqaba located along the Red Sea is a perfect base.

Also known as the Valley of the Moon due to the beautiful night’s sky here, Wadi Rum spans across 278 square miles of mountains, rock bridges, sand dunes and notable sites including the alleged house of Lawrence of Arabia. The drive between Aqaba and Wadi Rum takes visitors along the Desert Highway which was once the route of the Hejaz Railway. Here visitors can bask themselves in the beauty of desert either side of them as they await the adventures at Wadi Rum.

Jordan is also home to a large amount of desert in the east. The eastern desert in Jordan is rarely visited by tourists as it is far stonier than the sand dunes of the south.

Things to Do in The Desert in Jordan

Wadi Rum is really the only desert in Jordan with plenty of things to do. Wadi Rum is visitor friendly and easy to access from the city of Aqaba. From leisurely walks to adrenaline fuelled adventures, there are lots of things to do in the Jordanian desert.

Follow the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia with a hike across the Jordanian desert . Wadi Rum is a great destination for long leisurely walks through the ancient Jordanian desert. Opt for a guided expedition through a range of easy and challenging routes including the rocky Lawrence Spring for fabulous desert views, or, Khazali Canyon for a look at the ancient inscriptions that were discovered on the rocks.

Hiking in Jordan is great fun

Camping in The Desert in Jordan

Spend a night gazing up at the spectacular Milky Way as part of this desert camping adventure. At Wadi Rum, visitors can embrace the night’s sky in the desert in Jordan by staying in a Bedouin-style tent. These tents take visitors back to a simpler way of living – perfect for romantic getaways or a unique experience with the children. There are many Bedouin Camps to choose from and each one provides delicious traditional Jordanian food and snacks. Our recommendation is this 2-day Bedouin Experience Tour .

For the thrill seekers amongst us, why not rip through Jordan’s desert on a four by four adventure. Jeep tours are a great way to see as much of the desert in Jordan as possible. These pickup style jeeps are operated by local people who will give visitors an insight into the historical and cultural significance of this spectacular desert, for example with this  Wadi Rum Jeep Safari Tour .

Wadi Rum

Camel Rides

There is nothing that screams desert adventure more than venturing through the wilderness on a back of a camel. Wadi Rum is brimming with camel ride excursions that last from one hour to a few days. A three-hour camel trek through Rum village and into the Wadi Rum desert will cost around 60JD (85 USD) for one person, or, 150JD (212 USD) for four people.

Wadi Rum Camels

All in all – The Desert in Jordan

The desert in Jordan was home to local farmers and traders for thousands of years who struggled to survive the harsh climate of the desert. Today the desert in Jordan, mainly Wadi Rum, is a number one tourist destination with lots of unique things to see and do. A visit to Wadi Rum can be expensive but it is certainly something that you will not forget in a hurry.

Our tour guide Asyel made our trip truly unforgettable. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and professionalism exceeding all expectations. He ensured the trip was comfortable and enjoyable the whole time. His warm and friendly demeanor instantly made us feel like we were exploring Jordan with a good friend. Thank you for an amazing experience.

( Jul 2023 )

My partner and I did this trek as part of a 2 week tour of Jordan. The whole trip was just perfect and this trek is just a fantastic way to journey to Petra. The local guides were wonderful and give the trek its intimate feeling. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting Jordan.

Motaz was awesome his crew were all top shelf the experience was beyond belief. It was much better than we expected. Jordan is so beautiful and welcoming

media_TTC6QHC7SF64HFSM

I had a great time on my recent trip with Experience Jordan. The first part of the trip- the 5 day hike exceeded my expectations. My guide, Mahmood, was enthusiastic and shared his knowledge of Jordan whenever we asked: the culture, the land, the economics. Our safety always came first and this was evidenced on our first day when we experienced uncharacteristic rainfall that could have been dangerous as we were in the Canyon area. Mahmoud continuously monitored the weather and had backup plans in place. Since I went at the end of May/beginning of June, the weather was hot and Mahmood was constantly reminding us to hydrate and even had electrolyte packets available to keep our energy levels up. Our local guide and his family were friendly and welcoming. The home cooked meals were amazing and I cannot believe it was cooked out in the wilderness. The camps, though basic, were comfortable and were ready for us when we arrived at each site. Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea were all incredible. Our Bedouin camps and hotels were fancier than I had expected. After a long 5 day hike, the sites were such a reward. I highly recommend this company and if you can, request Mahmood as your guide too!

( May 2023 )

Mutaz Jarrar was a wonderful guide for our hike and overnight stay in Wadi Rum. There were 15 of us on the trip with various levels of hiking ability. He provided us with knowledge and history along the way. We had an opportunity to ride camels, see the sunset, look at the stars and see the sunrise. He was patient and kind and was able to roll with the changes. He added nice surprises like fresh dates and watermelon and opportunities for shopping at rest stops along the way. It was a fabulous experience. I highly recommend Mutaz.

Before you go

How fit do i need to be.

This is a 5-day trek with each day covering 14-17+ kilometers (8.5-10.5+ miles). That is five days in a row with 5-7 hour hikes. So you should be reasonably fit to be able to enjoy this hike.

How is the weather?

We are operating these trips during the best times of year to trek in Jordan. Throughout the year, at the camps during the night you will want to have long pants, and a light jacket or sweatshirt. During November, December, and February, you may also want warmer clothes like a bigger jacket, hats, gloves, and a light rain jacket. We know we are located in the Middle East, but don't worry - Jordan is not that hot. We don't offer many departures in the Summer for that reason, but May has the potential to be on the warmer side. During the warmest times this trip operates, the temperature is usually not much over 35 celsius (95 Fahrenheit).

Which airport do you recommend flying into?

The main airport (QAIA - Queen Alia International Airport) is approximately 1-hour outside of Amman. Airport transfers are not included in this trip price. We can arrange a transfer for an extra $50 per car per way (message your guide after booking). The other best way is to take a taxi from the airport. There are a lot of services near the airport that can arrange transfers to the hotel. The prices are approximately the same. Arrival: Day 1 is scheduled only for arrivals and check-in. Therefore any flight arriving on Day 1, with enough time to make it to the hotel, and get some sleep, is a good choice. Note that airport transfers are not included. If you would like to arrive a day or so early, that's great! You can easily book an add-on for one extra night on either end of your tour. Let us know and we can book extra nights and/or additional activities. Or feel free to arrange things on your own and join the group when it's time. Departure: Day 9 is scheduled just for your check-out and departure to the airport. A morning / mid-day departure flight on Day 9 is ideal. It is possible to have a departure flight on day 8. If you chose to do so, we recommend a flight that departs after 7 pm. Departing on Day 8 makes things a bit more rushed but this option may work well for people with relatively short flights or limited time off (or if the airfare available just happens to be a better deal that day!)

Rooming is on a twin-share basis. So travellers booking together will share a room and solo travellers will be paired with a member of the same sex (single supplement available for $200).

When can I charge my phone?

During Wilderness Camping, you should not expect to have access to electric charging. After leaving Amman on Day 2, your first good charging opportunity will be at the Bedouin Camp in Little Petra on night 5. What's the drinking water situation?

Although it is totally fine to take a shower or brush your teeth with tap water in Jordan, it is not recommended to drink it. You can buy bottled water at small shops, supermarkets, in coffee shops or restaurants. As a company, we have been working to use less plastic on tours. We will provide you with filtered water to refill your reusable water bottle or bladder whenever possible.

What is the start and end location?

We start and end the trip at the hotel in Amman.

What should I wear?

Jordan is a predominantly Islamic nation, and still tends to be quite conservative in many regions. We recommend dressing accordingly. As a general guideline, shoulders and knees should be covered – for women and men. Luckily loose, lightweight, long clothing is a great choice: While being culturally respectful, you also stay cool and protected from the sun! In Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba’s Beach Resorts, and the Dead Sea, people are used to seeing tourists. A more relaxed dress code, and even beach wear is therefore totally acceptable. During hiking, shorts can be worn but we generally recommend lightweight hiking trousers to keep the sun off. Jordan is a desert country but can get freezing cold during the winter months. Make sure to bring sufficiently warm clothing, especially for the evenings and nights, and be prepared for rain!

What should I do for spending money?

The currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD or JD). Changing money is easy in Jordan, and most major currencies are accepted in cash and as traveller's cheques. US-Dollars are the most accepted, followed by GBP and Euros. It is useful to have cash for small shops, and when moving outside the bigger cities and tourism sites. Try to break larger notes (especially 50s and 20s) as often as possible when paying in hotels, restaurants, or bigger supermarkets and shops. Credit cards are widely accepted in bigger towns and cities and ATMs are widespread. Visa is the most widely accepted card, followed by MasterCard. Other cards, such as Cirrus and Plus, are usually also accepted (e.g. by ATMs of the Jordan National Bank and HSBC).

Is there somewhere I can leave extra luggage?

For this trip, we start and end in the same hotel in Amman. You are welcome to leave any luggage that you don't need at the hotel.

What is the Jordan Pass?

The Jordan pass is a 'ticket' you can buy online before arrival that covers your Jordan visa entry as well as entrance into certain attractions including Petra and Wadi Rum. This makes it easier for you to visit places and also saves you money. The link to Jordan Pass' official website will appear here after you book. For this trip, you need the 'Jordan Wanderer' Ticket type (70JD/ UD$100).

What vaccines do you recommend?

Please check with your doctor, typically the following vaccines are recommended for travel to Jordan: - Diphtheria - Tetanus - Hepatitis A & B - Mumps, Measles & Rubella - Polio - Typhoid - Yellow Fever (mandatory for all travellers who have recently been in infected areas, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of South America)

What do you recommend for tips?

Tips of 10% are normal in upmarket restaurants. Elsewhere, rounding up the bill or leaving loose change is appreciated by underpaid staff, especially taxi drivers. Many places in Jordan now have a service fee automatically listed on the bill alongside the tax. Make sure to view your bill before tipping an additional amount. Gratuities for guides and drivers are not included in the price of your tour and are at your discretion.

Do I need a Covid test or proof of vaccination?

At the time of writing this is no longer needed for Jordan. Please check closer to the date of travel as well, in case anything changes. You can check this on the FCO website, under Jordan entry requirements.

Trek the Jordan Desert

Trek the Jordan Desert

Escape to the Jordan Desert on this life-changing challenge for people affected by mental health problems.

Trekking from the Dead Sea to the hidden city of Petra, we'll tackle a myriad of terrains, discover the secrets of this ancient land and see more shooting stars than you thought was possible.

By day, our Bedouin guides will lead us along ancient trails through towering valleys, past waterfalls, across vast, barren expanses and even to the top of the Black Mountains. We’ll immerse ourselves in the local culture and legends of this unspoiled landscape, a world apart from everyday life.

By night, we’ll rest in Bedouin camps and choose to sleep in tents or under a sky unspoiled by light pollution.

Hiking from one iconic World Heritage Site to another, we'll end our adventure with a day exploring Petra, the famous ancient city carved into the desert mountains.

The challenge may be tough, but the incredible panoramas are more than worth the workout, not to mention the cause!

Challenge grading - This is a desert trek but that doesn’t mean all flat sand. You will walk over varied terrain including rocky paths with some long distances covered over the 5 days. March, and October are chosen for cooler temperatures but in very recent years we have seen some uncharacteristically hot days. There will be some days of climbing but the altitude is considered light.
