EXCLUSIVE Q&A with the creator of Journey of Wrestling: The Wrestling Booking Simulator Coming Soon to Steam

Read on for an overview of Journey of Wrestling, a wrestling booking simulator currently playable on desktop/mobile browsers and soon to release on Steam. Plus, an exclusive Q&A with the game's creator, and more.

Vince McMahon Resigns From W.W.E.'s Parent Board Amid Sexual Assault Inquiry

Fantasy booking is as much a mainstay in professional wrestling fandom as the actual wrestling is. The wrestling sub-sect of social media is saturated with fan-made event posters, side-by-side images of the very best not to have faced one another yet, and threads upon threads of reasoning as to why a story is going to take a direction it, more often than not, never does. But that's the fun of wrestling for some, the imagination, the possibilities, however remote those ideas may seem.

Wrestling booker simulators provide an outlet for those to get their ideas down and make something - albeit virtual - of their sprawling imagination. But it's an admittedly bare market. Fans have been drawn to WWE 2K for its leading adaptation of professional wrestling, and the GM mode has been found to be enjoyable, but that's just one feature of the wider game and is reasonably shallow to fit. For those looking for total wrestling management experience, e-wrestling has been an available outlet for years - a prime example is Total Extreme Wrestling - with even Tony Khan saying he first fantasy booked Dynamite in the 90s decades before founding AEW. But even still, there has been limited access to quality booking simulators, especially for those looking to get into the past quickly.

Look no further than Journey of Wrestling , currently playable on mobile and desktop browsers and coming soon to Steam. Journey of Wrestling is available to play for free on your browser, with a paid version to unlock all features. They also have a Patreon which offers different tiers of membership in exchange for rewards such as early access to new features.

The game has seen much growth since hitting the web in 2019, adding features like local multiplayer and an offline mode in monthly updates. Journey of Wrestling is prided upon by its creator for its ease of access, allowing players to load their choice of thousands of customized scenarios and start their unique booking journey. From there, total control of the player's chosen company is theirs, from signing to booking to beating out rivals in ratings wars.

For those who crave a challenge, particular scenarios have been devised with a story in mind. Such as Wrestling on Mars and Passion of Wrestling, the former putting the booker in charge of a wrestling promotion on Mars and overcoming the unique challenge that poses while the latter sees the player booking a struggling all-women's promotion in the 80s. Failing that, users are also afforded the opportunity to create their scenario, rounding Journey of Wrestling off as a comprehensive player experience.

Daily DDT spoke to Journey of Wrestling's creator, Mahin, in an exclusive Q&A to talk about Journey of Wrestling, the future of the title, and other games in the works:

What inspired you to develop Journey of Wrestling? And what are your desired long-term goals for the title?

I started working on the game in 2017. I was learning to program, learning Python by myself. The advice was to make little projects to get better, and I thought what better than to make a little wrestling game? I've been passionate about wrestling since I was a child, and loved playing general manager mode in wrestling video games. So I made a little program that ran in the terminal. You could book matches by typing wrestlers' names, and then go to your event and pick the winner, rinse and repeat. I thought it was pretty fun, and found myself playing it for hours that week. I forgot about it for a while then. And I don't remember why, but maybe a year later I thought: 'Why not put it up for other people to play?'. So I coded a web version and added some more features like making your scenario, but it was still pretty bare-bones. you didn't have weekly shows, or segments, or feuds, or even gimmick matches. But I released it anyway and, well, forgot about it again. A few months later, I noticed that people were playing it, asking for more features, and realized there were some legs to this project. So I started fleshing it out, and I've been working on it ever since.

The current goal is to release it on Steam, so it runs offline and it reaches more people. Later down the road, I still have many features written down, like eras, where each decade feels and plays out differently and you can progress your game through different times, increasing the longevity of saves and making each one unique. Something related to that is the ability to generate a new game in a unique universe, with its challenges, competitors, and lore. I was inspired by RimWorld for this, and that's a high ambition to aim for. But I think it could add even more replay value. Then there's online multiplayer, which would be pretty fun to add, but brings its challenges. And other little ideas, like adding territories [and maps], different arenas and locations, new story modes, etc.

What stuck out when I started playing it was the ease of access first but then the sheer breadth of options to play through. Especially the Wrestling on Mars scenario. What made you think of that?

I'm glad you felt that way. Games in this genre can be hard to approach but usually have amazing depth. I thought easing users in would make it more accessible, and then give them a breadth of features to explore. We have a more wrestling-centric story, Passion of Wrestling, about a struggling women's promotion set in the 1980s. But the first idea was something I'm super into Sci-Fi. Once I got the idea, it took hold, and I envisioned a future of wrestling where humans are living on Mars and of course, wrestling is present there. I then added lore, with "mutant" Martians and tied that into the story. The Sci-Fi setting gave me some new ideas for power-ups, like using mind control to sign a competitor's superstar, and overall have a lot of fun with the gameplay and story.

With the Steam release, it feels worth asking whether you have considered either consoles or a physical release further down the line. Is Journey of Wrestling just the beginning, laying the foundation for any other future titles?

It all depends on how the game does. A console release will be a really interesting challenge. I do have an idea for a career-mode wrestling sim, taking inspiration from Journey of Wrestling, but playing as a superstar, going through a whole career, learning traits, having dream matches, and aiming to become a legend. Of course, with lots of failures and silly moments.

Are there any plans to introduce working relationships between promotions, similar to AEW x NJPW?

Yes. I plan to add a 'cross-promotion event' feature, where you can collaborate with competitors to create a super show. You could negotiate to get a certain number of talent, and you could send some of yours too, but unlike trades, everyone will be available to be booked together. And down the line, it could integrate with a company relationship feature, where you can have allies and rivals.

With Passion of Wrestling, did you take real-life inspiration or was it a completely original concept?

I'm a huge fan of GLOW and you might notice that if you play the scenario. I wanted to make something focusing on women, so I took inspiration from that, then added my characters with their own unique narratives that worked with the overall story I wanted to tell.

Ideas I had just simply based on the Journey of Wrestling concept were either a UFC/MMA or boxing match-making simulator, would that be something worth considering? Or is it something that could potentially make its way as a particular scenario in Journey of Wrestling?

I've had many users mention that. To make it work well, I think it has to be its own thing, as Journey of Wrestling has many features and nuances specific to wrestling. However, I need to be passionate about the idea, and I'm only at that stage with wrestling right now.

To round off this Q&A if you could outline what you envision for Journey of Wrestling, and yourself, over the next year, that would be great.

For the next year, I plan to release the game on Steam, do a couple major content updates, and maybe have a teaser out for my next project.

Editor’s Note: I originally wrote this for another wrestling site I created, Pro Wrestling Wire . I decided to add it here to have everything in one spot. Enjoy!

Pro wrestling and simulation games can be a fun combination, and this  Journey of Wrestling  review proves just that.

I’ve been playing Adam Ryland’s  various wrestling simulation games  for years (TEW, EWR, etc.), but admittedly, it’s not the most versatile gaming option available for wrestling fans in terms of accessibility.

So, when I randomly stumbled upon Journey of Wrestling on Reddit, it was obvious that it was a viable alternative.

Let’s jump into the Journey of Wrestling review.

To be clear: This is not a review that aims to knock the TEW series. However, noting the similarities and differences is necessary for wrestling fans curious about what Journey of Wrestling has to offer. TEW has become the gold standard for simulation games, so it’s understandable why it’s a part of the conversation.

One area where Journey of Wrestling shines is its simplicity. It doesn’t require the ins and outs of looking at hundreds of stats or thousands of available wrestlers, making it one of the most ‘pick up and play’ wrestling games ever.

Your goal? Build your company’s reputation and put on the best shows that you can. Even better, booking matches and shows is an incredibly simple task.

Journey of Wrestling Booking

Whereas in TEW games, the screen is filled with numerous options and information, the Journey of Wrestling screen contains only the essentials. Pick the wrestlers you want for the match or segment, and boom, it’s on the booking sheet. You can take care of the rest (pick winners) once the actual show begins.

The game is also very easy to navigate with only five main tabs: Dashboard, Book, Play, Manage, and Menu.

Dashboard gives you an overview of roster alerts, staff tasks, injuries, and upcoming shows. Book is where you book your matches and segments. Play is for when you’re ready to start your next show. Manage is where you can immerse yourself in your roster, feuds, job goals, and other fun stuff. Menu sends you back to the main Journey of Wrestling screen.

Much like TEW 2020 has mods for different eras in wrestling history, so does Journey of Wrestling.

When starting a new game, you can choose from numerous scenarios made by members of the Journey of Wrestling community.

Want to take over the WWF right after the Montreal screwjob and dive into the Attitude Era (this is the one that got me hooked on the game)? You can do that. Prefer to stick to the current era with WWE, AEW, NJPW, or another company? You can do that too. There are also options to play an NXT-based scenario, a 1994 scenario, and lots of other scenarios involving both real and created companies.

Journey of Wrestling Scenarios

Scenarios are constantly updated with tweaks, and you can even filter them by Top Rated, Popular, New, and All to find the right one for you.

Of course, if you find that you love Journey of Wrestling and want to create your own game world, you have that option with the Create Scenario button on the main page.

Creative Points

I love the creative points aspect of Journey of Wrestling, as they allow you to further expand the options available to you within the game.

You earn creative points based on certain achievements within matches and shows, and these give you the opportunity to add more gimmick matches, better TV show segments, and things like that.

For example, after putting together some quality shows in my Attitude Era save, I earned enough points to finally have the Hell in a Cell Match as a match option.

Journey of Wrestling Gimmick Matches

Naturally, I used that for a match involving Mick Foley, and he was thrown off the top of the cage by Shawn Michaels. All it needed was Jim Ross’ commentary, and it would have been perfection.

But that’s just one aspect of what creative points can do. They play a role in other fun tasks involving booking and management.

Versatility

Perhaps one of the biggest things that works for Journey of Wrestling is the fact that it can be played anywhere.

Whereas a game like TEW 2020 can only be played via download on a PC (or Mac with the right software), Journey of Wrestling is a browser-based game. That means you can play it on your desktop, laptop, iPad, and mobile device.

Ease of use is important in an era where millions of apps and websites are competing for a person’s attention. Luckily, all you’ve gotta do is type in JourneyofWrestling.com, and you can start playing. It’s that simple.

Admittedly, Journey of Wrestling has replaced Reddit as my go-to entertainment option when laying in bed.

Sorry, Reddit. I still love you.

Journey of Wrestling is free for the basic version of the game. For the full version, it’s a one-time payment of $15 (US). It has a free trial if you want to try before you buy.

I started off playing the free version and loved it so much that I eventually bought the full version. If you’re a casual fan that just wants a fun game to play every now and then, the free version may be all you need. If you want a little more depth (but nowhere near the level of TEW 2020), the full version will more than meet your needs.

Among the features that are offered in the full version: Staff and Facilities management, sandbox mode, multiple game saves, special segments, custom segments, random events, and so much more.

Journey of Wrestling Staff

Plus, paying the $15 for the full version gets you access to all future paid features.

When comparing the prices for Journey of Wrestling and TEW 2020, I’m not sure there’s a a perfect way to do it. They’re different games that offer different things, and for my money, they’re both worth it.

Journey of Wrestling Summary

If you find yourself with a hectic schedule and need a wrestling game that you can play literally anywhere that has an internet connection, Journey of Wrestling is an excellent choice.

It’s a simple alternative to TEW 2020 (and cheaper), yet still packs an incredible punch when it comes to fun and replayability.

The game offers lots more than what I’ve mentioned, which is part of the beauty of it. You discover little things along the way that make it an even more awesome experience (the Help section on the main page offers more specifics on how the game works).

Even if you’ve never played a simulation wrestling game, Journey of Wrestling is so incredibly easy to play and understand that anyone can have fun with it. And again, the replayability is just outstanding.

So, if you’re searching for your next pro wrestling gaming adventure, Journey of Wrestling is a great game for casual and hardcore fans alike.

And while I’d love to tell you even more about it, I’ve gotta get back to the game so I can work on the feud between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock.

We provide wholly original, quality and consistent content that encapsulates and celebrates the diverse pro-wrestling landscape we love so much., journey of wrestling review: a nostalgic homecoming.

I love wrestling.

I love video games.

When I was a kid, wrestling video games were heaven. In particular, The Smackdown vs Raw series was my adrenaline, sparking my wildest dreams with endless storytelling possibilities. And perhaps my favorite part of the earlier titles was the General Manager mode.

GM mode provided endless hours of fun. I could buy out as many wrestlers as I could with my budget, plan segments to drive up match ratings, and boost audience interest in my dream match-ups. I played it for hours and hours, always starting a fresh file with even more ambitious ideas than the previous playthrough—I truly loved it.

And I’ll be honest: I haven’t touched a wrestling video game in a while, at least not in a few years. The 2K formula isn’t my cup of tea, and I miss the variety and depth that older games provided.

But every once in a while, I feel the itch to relive those days, the carefree hours spent sitting in front of my bulky CRT monitor not only had a profound impact on my childhood, but also on my own tastes in storyline development and characterization in pro wrestling.

I am so thrilled to say that Journey of Wrestling brings all of these nostalgic flavors back into my life and more.

Journey of Wrestling is a booking simulator that allows you to take charge of a promotion, its PPV events, match cards, show segments, and all the good, juicy stuff in between! It was a warm, welcoming hug to my wrestling soul, and a journey (haha) that was quite memorable.

journey of wrestling title codes

While JoW has a free trial of the game available, I 100% recommend diving in and purchasing the paid version for the full experience. You can unlock many features that enhance gameplay, including unlimited factions, ratings wars, the ability to run multiple promotions at once, local multiplayer, and sandbox mode. Almost everything I discuss going forward is available in the paid version of JoW. For $15, it’s an absolute steal for what you get.

As someone who hadn’t played a simulator game in years, I felt right at home with the customization options available, and I appreciated JoW’s accessibility to newcomers of the wrestling booking genre. General manager simulators can be overwhelming for the inexperienced, but JoW ensures that you understand the game’s mechanics before you dive in, such as its recommended tutorial mode. It’s catered towards teaching new players the fundamentals of booking, gradually introducing each of the components you’ll need to run a successful show. The promotion size is also perfect, allowing players to easily transition into JoW’s booking style.

Already familiar with the gameplay? You can skip the tutorial and jump straight into the other scenarios when you begin a new file. This was another aspect of JoW that I was impressed with: the depth and scope of stories to select from. There’s something here to satisfy every kind of wrestling fan’s tastes.

journey of wrestling title codes

Are you frustrated with the lack of direction and build in modern day wrestling? You can take control of WWE, AEW, Impact, and more as you see fit! Is your brain constantly buzzing with “What If?” storylines from the Monday Night Wars? You’re the brains of the 90s now, as you shape those dreams into reality with the Attitude Era scenario. If you’re a wrestling history buff, there’s even a scenario that touches on the WWWF’s early years. JoW hosts original stories too! Resurrect WCW from the dead, take control of a mid-1980s women’s promotion, or conquer Mars as the leader of the Martian Wrestling Alliance while also fighting off mutating martians.  Seriously, you can!

All of this is to say that JoW demonstrates wrestling booking’s versatility. Playing more than one story is absolutely encouraged, motivating players to take discrete approaches. Each scenario you select is stored in a save file, so you can run more than one promotion at the same time. You can cater your own Journey in Wrestling to your storytelling and roster tastes; no one playthrough of this game is going to be the same for each player, and I love this so much.

journey of wrestling title codes

Before you start a file, you can adjust your simulation’s parameters to make it as challenging or broken as you want it to be. Whether you decide to draft your own roster, play with other friends in local multiplayer, or activate sandbox mode to set everything loose, you can create your own experience—-your own Journey of Wrestling.

So how did my own journey turn out? First, I decided to play through the tutorial to familiarize myself with how JoW played. Since I already knew the basics of booking, I was able to get in the groove of the game immediately, and once I felt comfortable navigating JoW’s interface, I started a new file and opened up my own version of AEW—-Caro’s All Elite Wrestling Simulator.

And oh my goodness, this is where the fun REALLY began.

Journey of Wrestling truly shines when your imaginative ideas run free. I wanted to see how far I could take my version of AEW via JoW’s sandbox mode. It granted me many options from the start: the entire roster, all medical and training facilities unlocked, and unlimited points to spend on contract signings and legends.

The first PPV I booked for AEW was Double or Nothing. I didn’t have any story beats planned, so I went with the flow of what I felt would make a compelling, consistent show. Some of my favorite highlights include:

  • Moxley and Eddie Kingston stealing the show with a fantastic opening match
  • Brian Pillman Jr. winning the FTW Championship during the Casino Battle Royale
  • Kenny Omega and Orange Cassidy main eventing the show with a 6 Star exploding barbed wire death match
  • Cody Rhodes losing a handicap match to Death Triangle in a Chuck E Cheese Brawl match (5 stars!)

journey of wrestling title codes

This also a great time to note that I planned Kenny Omega vs Orange Cassidy weeks before they even hinted at it for the actual, real life, Double or Nothing event.

After the critical acclaim that DoN received, I was left with many storylines to pursue, and I arrived at a crossroad regarding how to proceed with my simulation.

Would it make the most logical sense to make a realistic portrayal of how I think AEW should proceed with the rest of 2021? Would I inhibit my imagination, paint a realistic picture of AEW’s rivalries and stables?

I wanted to go completely off the rails.

Once I got the alert that Nick Jackson was injured for the summer, I knew what had to be done. And everything snowballed from there.

So I broke up the Young Bucks.

Then, I smushed Matt Jackson and Cash Wheeler into a tag team called CA$H MONEYY.

I made Matt and Nick Jackson feud with each other once Nick returned from his injury. In retaliation, Nick and Dax Harwood created a tag team together—they are all still feuding.

journey of wrestling title codes

I created a new title called the A E S T H E T I C championship, only defendable in Stadium Stampede matches. Maki Itoh is the current holder of the belt.

Speaking of, I made Maki Itoh face turn and become the biggest star of the women’s division.

I let a 130 man battle royal main event an original AEW Dynamite event I created. Tickets were only on sale for 10 minutes, sold out in 1 minute, and said main event match miraculously left no one involved with sustained injuries. Michael Nakazawa won the whole match to claim the TNT Championship

journey of wrestling title codes

I booked Marko Stunt and Chris Jericho in a steel cage match for Fyter Fest’s main event, garnering 3 stars and a win for Marko.

I fired Chris Jericho in a segment the next night.

I made Cody Rhodes lose so many 1-on-10 handicap matches that his popularity tanked to the point where a retirement ceremony on Dynamite was justified.

I hyped Kenny Omega and Eddie Kingston as the feud of the summer, in which the peak of the rivalry included Kenny getting slimed by Eddie.

I made Kenny Omega and David Arquette fight for the AEW World Championship in an exploding barbed wire deathmatch. I am pleased to announce that in Caro’s All Elite Wrestling, David Arquette is the current world champion.

journey of wrestling title codes

I could go on about everything else I did, but I can only talk so much without making this review too long. I listed these particular moments out to illustrate how your imagination has no limits in Journey of Wrestling. If you’re looking for a fun wrestling game to play, I definitely recommend it! And if you’re new to booking simulators, but feel overwhelmed about taking the plunge, at least try it for free before committing to the paid version.

A big thank you to Journey of Wrestling for providing Wrestle Inn with the paid version of this game! This is definitely a game I look forward to revisiting as my creative juices spark with new ideas.

Rhea Ripley’s Journey From Injury To Setback After 4/15 WWE Raw

R hea Ripley, a formidable force in women’s wrestling, had solidified her place in history with a dominant championship reign. However, her journey took an unexpected turn when Liv Morgan launched a brutal attack on her during last week’s RAW, resulting in a debilitating shoulder injury.

On the latest edition of RAW, Ripley was faced with the harsh reality of her injury as she was forced to relinquish her hard-earned WWE Women’s World Championship.

The severity of her condition was revealed through a recent update, indicating that Ripley had suffered an AC Joint sprain, an injury that would require her to take some time off to recover.

Rhea Ripley’s Reign

What made Ripley’s reign even more significant was its duration, reaching an impressive 380 days. Coincidentally, this duration mirrored that of wrestling legend John Cena’s third WWE Championship reign.

Cena, at the peak of his career, held the title for the same number of days before he, too, faced a setback due to injury, highlighting the interconnectedness of wrestling history.

The unfortunate parallels between Ripley and Cena’s reigns underscored the unpredictable nature of professional wrestling. Both champions, in their prime, were forced to relinquish their titles due to injuries, leaving a void in the championship scene.

With Ripley’s reign abruptly ended and the Women’s World title left vacant, WWE is now tasked with the challenge of ushering in a new era by crowning a worthy successor. This announcement was made during the latest RAW, signaling the beginning of a new chapter in the women’s division.

Despite the setback, Ripley’s legacy as a dominant champion will undoubtedly endure, serving as an inspiration for aspiring wrestlers and a testament to the unpredictable nature of the sport. As Ripley highlights on her journey to recovery, the wrestling world eagerly awaits her triumphant return to the squared circle.

East Canton youngster Mazin Hmidan finds unlikely path to youth wrestling state titles

  • East Canton Elementary School student Mazin Hmidan recently won three youth wrestling state titles.
  • Hmidan was discovered after he was seen wrestling other children during one of his sister's softball games.
  • Hmidan's journey has been guided by longtime former Massillon varsity head coach Gil Donahue.

Youth wrestling state champion Mazin Hmidan of East Canton poses with the medals and trophies he won from winning three different titles this past season.

Just playing around with some other kids has led 8-year-old Mazin Hmidan on a quite a journey in youth wrestling.

The East Canton Elementary School student recently won three individual state championships at the youth level at 55 pounds. Hmidan won the OYWA, OAC and OHWAY state championships. He is believed to be the first Stark County youth wrestler to accomplish such a feat. Perhaps the only thing wilder than the success Hmidan has experienced is how he was discovered.

"We took him to his sister's softball game and some of the boys were all wrestling each other on the side," father Brian Hmidan said. "An area youth wrestling coach happened to be watching all the kids play. The coach approached us and asked us if he had any interest in wrestling competitively because he thought he was a natural."

That chance meeting eventually led the Hmidans to the Donahue Wrestling Academy. It is a school for aspiring youth wrestlers run by former longtime Massillon varsity coach Gil Donahue. Hmidan managed to make an immediate impression on Donahue.

"He had the aggression and the mental fortitude needed to be successful right away," Donahue said. "I coached varsity wrestling at Massillon for over 20 years and very few kids showed that kind of natural ability at that age. He's a special kid."

Donahue began working with Hmidan to help develop his mental approach.

"It's been a different path," Donahue said. "He's traveling a different path than most of the kids his age. They have a lot more trials and adversity early on. They key for Maz is to just keep him focused and keep him wanting to continue on with the sport. You can go a long time in between seeing a kid with his type of ability come through. He really is special."

It's hard to argue with the words of Hmidan's coach after his results this past winter. Hmidan has not just been beating kids his age in his weight class. He defeated some kids who were as much 3 years older on the way to winning one of the three state tournaments.

"He really just blew us away this year with his performance," Brian Hmidan said. "He's ended up just being a natural at it. I always like to tell people that it was a case that Mazin likes to do what he is doing now before he knew what it was he was doing."

The journey continues this summer for Hmidan, who is scheduled to compete at several national events.

His parents are doing everything they can to keep the pressure off of Hmidan as expectations increase with his early success.

"More than anything, we stress to him not to dwell on things either way," Brian Hmidan said. "We don't want him going out thinking that he has to win every time he steps out on the mat. We just want him to do his best with no pressure. That's very important to us. We don't want him to feel success is pushed or mandated by us. We just want him to know that we are proud of him as long as he tries his best. We just want to be proud and help him achieve the things he wants to achieve. We want it to be about the process and having a good attitude."

Swerve strickland’s journey from villain to aew ‘anti-hero’ has him on cusp of championship goal.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

It would be the moment everything Swerve Strickland has worked for will manifest — the payoff for him and the fans who have pushed him to this point.

The 33-year-old spoke about holding the AEW world title and becoming the promotion’s first black world champion from the day he stepped into the company in March 2021, four months after being released by WWE.

Strickland has his best opportunity to make that reality when he faces Samoa Joe for the AEW World championship in the main event of the Dynasty pay-per-view at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on Sunday (8 p.m., Bleacher Report, Triller).

Swerve Stickland and Prince Nana.

“It’s a culmination of just sacrifice, hard work, going against the grain, literally proving things to yourself. Not just proving things to the world,” Strickland said. “Proving it to yourself that what you believe in truly can change the perception of you in the world.”

When Strickland was let go by WWE after being the North American champion in NXT and leading the “Hit Row” faction to the main roster, he signed with AEW with a world championship on his mind.

He felt most fans thought WWE dropped the ball by letting him go, but saw some who didn’t believe he could reach the heights he strived for.

Sunday is about repaying people’s faith that he would make good on the promise they see in him.

“The biggest part is paying off the fans for investing ever since I came into AEW,” Strickland said. “It was a really big when I was let go by WWE. It was a fact that a lot of people, the majority of fans were just like, ‘Oh man, they made a big mistake. What’s gonna happen next?’ Because I feel like people always believed in me in a sense, but there were still a lot of doubters who didn’t see the potential and it was proving a lot of those people wrong and leveling up to the potential of the fans who did believe.”

That took time.

Strickland uses the 1993 film “Demolition Man” starring Sylvester Stallion and Wesley Snipes to describe his character’s evolution in AEW.

Samoa Joe and Swerve Strickland face off at AEW Dynasty on Sunday.

In the film, the world is in perfect order with no crime for those who live within the upper-class domain, while Snipes’ character rails against it in an attempt to survive in a world that isn’t as welcoming to him.

For Strickland, that was the justification for all the bad and violent things his character and Mogul Embassy faction did for most of his run — doing whatever it took to get the opportunities his character believes were handed to others at the top of the company.

It culminated with his feud with “Hangman” Adam Page, with Strickland’s character going so far as to create a movie-villain-type scene with manager Prince Nana invading the former AEW world champion’s home and son’s nursery before their Texas Death match at Full Gear in November.

Then a funny thing happened.

Fans started to get even more behind Strickland after three straight wins over Page — who was doing whatever it took in the storyline to deny his rival the AEW world championship — including the bloody Texas Death match that many put up there with the best of the genre.

Fans loved what he was doing so much, that Page and Strickland pulled off a successful double turn during a time-limit draw in February on Dynamite to set up an AEW championship triple-threat match at Revolution where Joe pinned Page after it appeared Stickland had it won.

“Doing the bad things I did [in storyline] to get to where I need to go, people understood that,” Strickland said. “I think that’s where it turns from being a bad person and a heel and villain to almost like the anti-hero. The guy who is just trying to get to the opportunity that these guys were gifted from Day 1 [in AEW]. This guy is coming from being let go by a major company, fired unfairly. Then here, he’s getting title opportunities but he’s not winning them. ‘You know what, we’re riding for this guy.’

What Strickland is most proud about his feud with Page is that even after five matches together since October the audience isn’t tired of their story.

“People still want to see more,” Strickland said. “They still think there is so much more meat on the bone. Now people are still suspecting [him on Sunday]. His presence is still looming around even though he hasn’t been on TV in like a month. People still expect and want to see more. Nothing feels really stale about it.”

There are other reasons Strickland gradually turned the audience in his favor.

Swerve Strickland drop kicks Samoa Joe.

Bringing Nana in as his manager last April with his viral dance moves unlocked an added layer of entertainment to the package of him and Mogual Embassy in their promos and fans dancing along with Nana. There is no one else in wrestling like him in Strickland’s mind and it “broadened a lot of the ideas of how we can be on screen.”

Despite getting the best of Page, Strickland believes losing other big matches contributed to fans’ eagerness to see him finally raise gold in AEW.

Since last May, he lost two opportunities at the AEW International championship, fell short of the final in the Continental Classic and then missed out on the world title at Revolution.

It’s allowed Strickland to do something he feels he does best.

“I got further in my career losing than I did winning,” he said. “Every time I lost I moved forward. That’s a genuine skill that a lot of people don’t know how to do and I feel like that’s one of my benefits. That’s one of my biggest gifts. No matter what, I turn a situation for me.”

He’s also made sure not to lose the character’s grit and the edge that’s won him the hearts of fans.

Joe — who Strickland describes as having that “big bad feel” and being the next mountain in his way —  has been an ideal opponent to do it against.

During the contract signing leading up to the match, Strickland signed the paper in his own blood after a beatdown from Joe and last week he did a ridiculous top rope stomp to the outside onto a group of security guards just to coldly stare down his opponent in the eyes one more time before brawling.

“Those elements are what got the fans to buy into what you were serving them,” Strickland said. “Once you start mixing up the recipe a little bit, people don’t feel that genuine connection anymore. The first album that you made that put you on the map was full of all this raw emotion. It was a little gritty and stuff. But now the fact that you got the record deal and your turn and stuff, you got to still stick with who made you what you are. You got to stick to the source material, that grittiness and that underground feel.”

Stickland would become world champion at a unique time in AEW’s history with the company looking to boost live event attendance and grow its ratings all while in the middle of critical media rights renewal talks with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Swerve Strickland does a top rope stomp on to security members.

He said the company’s decision to release the CM Punk-Jack Perry altercation security footage from All In to try to boost interest in Perry and the Young Bucks vs. FTR tag team championship ladder match at Dynasty is “not necessarily my thing.”

But he respects AEW president Tony Khan and Matthew and Nicholas Jackson, the company’s executive vice president, and their belief it was the right call.

“That’s kind of why they are in the position they are,” he said. “They see something in it and sometimes you got to trust them. Even if it’s not necessarily what you would do, you got to trust the people in the position they are to do something like that.”

Strickland also sees some unique things he can bring to being AEW’s world champion in addition to the freshness of potential new feuds and stories. He does believe it’s possible he could tap into the fact that he spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserves for the first time since his days in Lucha Underground now that he’s a babyface.

Strickland calls helping bring the next business jump for AEW the “biggest challenge” should he become champ.

Swerve Strickland hopes to be the AEW world champion after his match at AEW Dynasty.

“I have a lot of outside connections with the entertainment business so that right there is something I want to dabble into a little bit more, take that to new heights, put AEW in a different viewing point than what a lot of people have seen from it already and that’s a high bar in itself,” said Strickland, who release an album in 2022 and collaborated with artist Flash Garments on his current AEW theme song. “Different style of matches, different style of story, different style of not just competitive but different style of storyteller.

“I have never been the run-of-the-mill type of person. I’ve always kind of steered things in a different way and I have a lot of different ways to do that in AEW than I could anywhere else and I’m at a different stage where I can really take the ball, the keys to this lovely household which is All Elite Wrestling is in the industry which is such a baby and let’s mature it a little bit.”

The table is set for that after the company brought in “known home run hitters” in free agents Will Ospreay, Kazuchika Okada and Mercedes Mone’ . Strickland has had very little interaction with all three in his career and is happy they are on his team.

“I want to be a part of that and I want to be the leader of that,” he said.

For that to happen, he will need to take the AEW world championship for Joe at Dynasty, making good on everything he and his fans have seen in him since he joined the company.

“It was justification for why I was the way I was [in storyline]” Stickland said. “It was tapping into the fact that, it almost felt like, ‘Dam, this guy is fighting and surviving off of scraps for so long. Man, when is this guy going to finally get his turn to have a meal at the table?”

Sunday could be Strickland’s first taste of the next level of stardom he’s hungered and fought for.

STATE COLLEGE — If becoming a USA Olympic Team Trials wrestling champion isn’t enough of a demanding and strenuous task, imagine the added challenge of having to defeat a longtime friend to do it.

But wrestlers who compete for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, now known because of recent success as the mecca of freestyle and college wrestling, know that that’s part of the job description.
