What should be a fun and relaxing time can turn into a time of constant stress and worry. How do we overcome this turmoil of emotions? Saying a prayer for safe travel before starting your trip will help you trust in His protection.

A prayer for protection from accidents.

Dear Lord, I pray for all those out on the roads today. I pray that they will be more cautious and less distracted. Help us to navigate the jam-packed roads on our way to our destination. I pray you will release your angels around every vehicle on the road and that no accidents will occur. I ask that all those traveling will reach their destination safely. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Traveling for the holidays can bring a lot of worry and anxiety. What if we break down? What if we get a flat tire? What if we get stranded outside of nowhere? What if we get lost? Even with all our modern conveniences like cell phones, GPS and services like Onstar, anxiety can still set in. Still, we need to trust above all else, that the Lord will keep us safe. Here are some verses to keep in mind when the worry and anxiety of traveling get to be too much.

My God is my rock. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.  2 Samuel 22:3 (NLT)

He led me to a place of safety, he rescued me because he delights in me. 2 Samuel 22:20 (NLT)

So the Lord provided someone to rescue the Israelites from the Arameans. Then Israel lived in safety again, as they had in former days. 2 Kings 13:5 (NLT)

We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

Prayer for God's Protection ~ Psalm 91

Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. They would have fervently prayed for a safe journey and blessings. Similarly, we should also pray each time we go on a trip. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here are some short prayers for travel that we can pray before traveling. 

1. A Short Prayer for Safe Travel

Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Help me get to my destination and get home safely. Help me to experience Your greatness and love during this trip so that I may draw even closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

As we go on our trip, let us also ask the Lord for His blessing and favor so that our journey may be smooth and peaceful. Here is a short prayer we can lift to the Lord before a flight.

Here is a prayer for safe driving and traveling. Let us seek the Lord’s protection before we go on a road trip so He can protect us and keep us safe while we’re on the road.

Lord, today I entrust You for your safety as we go on this road trip. I pray for an alert mind so that I may drive safely. Please sustain my strength during the long trip and bless me with steady hands. Grant in me patience and courtesy to the other drivers on the road, just as how You grant them with patience as well. May this be a smooth journey and no accidents will occur. Bless us, oh Lord, with Your grace and favor that we would enjoy this road trip and witness the wonderful creation that You’ve created with Your hands. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

It is also good to pray for the Lord’s protection against any kind of sickness during travel to fully enjoy our trip.

Dear God, as we travel today, I pray that You bless us with Your protection against any kind of sickness during our trip. Bless us with Your mercy and grace that we may be kept in good health as we travel. May the people around us during this trip also be in good health. Protect us from any virus that can bring harm to our health. Give us wisdom to also exercise caution and good hygiene throughout this trip. May the foods that we consume throughout this trip be cleansed by You to provide us with the nutrition to protect our bodies, the holy temples of Yours.  All this I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

We can also bless our friends and loved ones with a prayer for safe travel before they embark on a trip. Here is a prayer that we can lift for a loved one’s safe journey before they travel. 

Dear Lord, today I surrender my loved one into Your hands. I ask that You bless him/her with a safe trip and cover him/her with Your protection. Shine Your face on him/her Lord, so that no harm come upon him/her and shower them with Your grace as they go. I pray that they would experience Your presence and Your peace during this trip that no trouble or mishap would come upon them. Keep them in good health and give them wisdom and alert mind throughout their journey. May they get to their destination safe and sound. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen. 

Numbers 6:24-26 The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

6. Prayer for Family Protection and Harmony During Trip

It’s always good for us to say a prayer before any family trips for God’s protection to be upon us and our loved ones. 

Heavenly Father, I lift up my family to You today as we travel. I pray for You to watch over us and keep us from harm. Guide us and guard us during our trip and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. Protect us from any kind of sickness as well while we are traveling. Let there be harmony among us and may love and peace reign throughout this trip. Help us exercise patience and forgiveness towards each other that there would be no squabbles among us during this journey. As we embark on our trips, let us pray for a safe voyage and ask the Lord to guard you and no harm shall come to you.

First, it serves as a reminder that God is always with us, even when we are traveling down unfamiliar paths. Just as a lamp guides our steps in the dark, so too does God’s word provide us with guidance and direction.

Second, the verse also reminds us that we can always find comfort in God’s word, even when we are far from home. No matter where we go or what we see, God’s word will always be there to light our way.

In short, this verse is a reminder that God is our constant companion, both in the good times and the bad.

4 Prayers for Safe Travels and Journeys

As we have the ability to move from place to place easily by car, plane or train for business or pleasure, we may think traveling is a modern-day phenomenon. However, a closer look at Scripture shows us that travel and journeys are major themes in the Bible. Throughout both the Old and News Testaments, individuals such as Abram, Jesus and Paul, for example, regularly traveled.

We can learn much from Scripture for our journeying, whether for pleasure or purpose. In particular, the theme of travel and journeys can be applied to our spiritual lives as the Bible has much to say about our spiritual journeying.

Use the prayers below for your physical journeys, but also for the spiritual journeys of yourself and others.

Preparation for the Journey

The Hebrew verb nasa can mean to set out on the beginning of a journey. The verb is used primarily in this way in the Pentateuch , the first five books of the Bible. It refers to the journey of the Israelites — the start of their journey from Egypt, and the different stages of the journey when the pillar of cloud or fire indicated they should move on.

Most of us have time to prepare before we set out on a journey. But the picture of the Israelites waiting in Egypt for Pharaoh to let them go is of suddenly leaving with no preparation. Exodus 12:39 says: “...they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.”

Numbers 33 outlines the stages of the Israelites journey and the 42 times they packed up camp and set out again. It may be hard to imagine what it was like to pack up all one’s belongings — deciding what to take or leave behind, organize children, round up animals, pack food and water, and not be too exhausted to leave at the allotted time. They even had an alarm to get them going ( Numbers 10:2-6 )! We often find packing a suitcase for a few days to be tiring, and need to set an alarm when our journeys begin early.

Maybe you have never had to leave on a journey without any preparation, although perhaps at short notice. Or perhaps the only time you have had to pack up everything is to move house. Many people in our world have to set out with no preparation and leave everything behind. In particular, we think about those who flee because of war.

In all these situations, whether you are preparing for a pleasant journey, or have to suddenly leave because of dire circumstances, you can be reminded that God is watching over you as with the Israelites ( Exodus 12:42 ). This prayer is for you.

I thank You for watching over me as I prepare for all my journeys whether it is to take a vacation, travel for business, move house, or one which is thrust upon me unexpectedly. Thank You for Your constant vigil while I sleep, when I awake, and as I pack my suitcases. Give me the strength to prepare well for my journeys. When I feel fraught and tired, help me to stay calm knowing that You care for me.

Heavenly Father, I ask You to watch over men, women, and children who have to flee their homes with no preparation — those who are running away from harsh situations and from war, just like the Israelites had to run away from Egypt. I thank You that I can choose what to put in my suitcase, but I pray for those who have to put their whole lives in a suitcase, choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I ask You to care for these people who are destitute.

The Route for the Journey

The word for “road” or “way” in both the Old Testament ( derek ) and New Testament ( hodos ) can refer to a physical road ( Numbers 21:4 , Matthew 21:8 ) but also figuratively to the actions of a person and the direction they are taking.

In Deuteronomy, the Israelites were instructed to walk in the ways ( derek ) of the Lord ( Deuteronomy 10:12 ; 11:22; 19:9). Jesus used the word hodos in the following verse “I am the way ( hodos ) and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” ( John 14:6 ).

We usually do not set out on a journey without knowing the way we are going — having directions, planning the route, purchasing tickets, or other details. Even though we are careful in planning our journeys, they often come with obstacles. Delayed flights, inclement weather, and unwanted detours can present challenges and frustrations. It was the same in biblical times. The Israelites became impatient because they had to go around Edom ( Numbers 21:4 ). Jesus “had to go through Samaria” ( John 4:4 ), an unwanted route for most Jews who tried to avoid contact with Samaritans.

However, Jesus’ journey through Samaria gave Him the opportunity to share the truth of who he was with the woman at the well , and through her witness many more came to have faith in Jesus.

Use the prayer below as you plan your way for any physical journey you are taking and for opportunities to show the goodness of God. Pray over your spiritual journey as well. The prayer below is based on Psalm 119:26-32 . I have paraphrased it for you:

Heavenly Father,

As I plan the route of my next journey, whether for business or pleasure, I ask that each stage of the trip will go smoothly so I can get to my destination easily. When it does not, help me not to get frustrated and annoyed, but to see the opportunities you have given me to show Your goodness and kindness, just as Jesus did.

Lord God, just as I carefully plan the physical routes for any journey I am taking, teach me the importance of being intentional with Your ways for my life. Help me to understand Your instructions so I can meditate on and follow Your wonderful teachings. Keep me from going the wrong way, or making wrong decisions. In Your goodness, gently guide me. Today, I choose to be obedient and faithfully follow You.

The Journey

Journeys such as road trips, flights, train rides, and more often give the opportunity to talk and share with those with whom we are traveling, and with strangers. They also provide teaching moments, especially for children. Deuteronomy 11:19 says we are to teach God’s words to our children “when you walk along the road...” Our trips provide a chance to focus on and speak about spiritual things, but not just with children.

Jesus took the occasions of journeys to instruct his disciples and others during his ministry and after his resurrection . In particular, we are reminded of Jesus walking with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as He “explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” ( Luke 24:13-32 ). There are many other occasions, too, when Jesus used His travels for instruction — not limited to Mark 2:23-28 , Mark 9:30-34 , Luke 19:1-6 .

Journeys also present the opportunity to show compassion and love to others, as with the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:25-37 ).

Use this prayer for your upcoming journey, to look for chances to show kindness to others, to share the Gospel and your faith with family or friends traveling with you, and even with strangers you meet.

Help me to see the journeys I take as opportunities to show kindness, compassion, and Your mercy, just as Jesus did. I want to bring glory to You by sharing, encouraging, and teaching about Your love and goodness. Give me the chance to talk about what You have done for me and in my life. Help me to share my testimony and my faith with those I am in the car with, sit next to on the plane, and walk with on the road.

I thank You for the example of Jesus, who did so much of His teaching and healing while He was on journeys. Thank you that it is not just about the destination, but all that we can experience on the way. Just as You have walked with those through history who placed their trust in You, be with me and those I am traveling with today.

The Destination

When we travel and arrive at our destinations we are, in a sense, sojourners. We make a temporary stay in places that are foreign to us, whether they are other countries or different areas of our own country.

To sojourn is a familiar theme throughout the Bible from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham, for example, was a sojourner when he lived in Canaan. He sojourned in other places too: Egypt due to the famine ( Genesis 12:10 ), Gerar ( Genesis 20:1 ), and the land of the Philistines ( Genesis 21:34 ).

All of God’s people were sojourners until they arrived in the Promised Land . Then God reminded them to respect the sojourners among them because they were once foreigners ( Exodus 23:9 , Deuteronomy 10:19 , Leviticus 19:33 ).

Jesus, too, lived like a sojourner when on this earth. He said: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” ( Matthew 8:20 ). He also relied on the hospitality of others to provide a bed and food for him.

The Bible tells us we are foreigners when we don’t know Christ, but as Christians, we have become members of God’s household ( Ephesians 2:11-19 ). Even though we are considered strangers in this world ( Hebrews 11:13 , 1 Peter 2:11 ), we are to treat non-Christians well.

As you travel and take up temporary residence in different places, pray that you will be given good treatment and that, likewise, you can show God’s love and goodness to those who are strangers in your own communities and homes.

As I think about temporarily staying in another country, area, or someone’s home, not only do I hope to be treated well, but help me to be respectful to those around me who have different customs and behaviors than myself. I want to be a good witness for You in the way I behave, the actions I take, and the words I say. I also ask for Your continued protection and safety, remembering that Your concern for sojourners was not just for biblical times, but it extends to me today. Keep me and my traveling companions safe. May we be shown the hospitality that we want to extend to those who come into our homes or into our communities and country.

Traveling Mercies Meaning

The term “traveling mercies” does not appear in the bible, but there are hundreds of examples of God showing mercy for others. Mercy is God’s compassion or concern for us even though it is within His power to punish or harm us.

A traveling mercies prayer is said for someone who is going on a trip or starting a big journey. In the 19th century, these prayers were commonly said for missionaires, preachers, and volunteers who were traveling on behalf of the church. During those times travel was dangerous and unpredictable.

Today, prayers for traveling mercies are said for anyone that is embarking on a journey, whether that be by plane, train, car, boat or even on foot.

While it is easier and faster to travel than it was in the 19th century, when this term became popular, there are still many dangers in foreign lands. We need God’s protection now more than ever and we ask for his mercy through prayer.

Actor Gary Sinise Reflects on Prayer, God, Son's Death After Cancer Battle: 'A Man of Great Faith'

“He was a man of great faith — great, great faith.”

That’s how actor Gary Sinise describes his 33-year-old son, Mac, who died in January after a harrowing battle with Chordoma, a persistent and rare cancer that starts in the spine.

The “Forrest Gump” star told CBN News his son “loved his Catholic faith” and deeply embraced it throughout his difficult journey.

“It was just inspiring to see how it helped sustain him through this cancer battle,” Sinise said of the health struggle that started in 2018.

For years, the family fought alongside Mac, trying available medications and anything believed to be able to potentially heal him.

Sinise said he was there to battle alongside Mac as long as he kept fighting.

Mac’s Medical Journey

And that expedition wasn’t easy, as the loving dad recounted the “very disabling and crippling” nature of the disease. After the first tumor was removed in September 2018, Mac was monitored. Tragically, by May 2019, the cancer had returned.

“It had come back and it was starting to spread throughout his body,” Sinise said. “He was back in the hospital again, and he started chemo and radiation at that point, but there is no cure for this particular cancer. There’s no reliable drug that has been used to fight it that has been effective.”

The unpredictable nature of the cancer meant doctors would often throw different treatments and medications into the mix, hoping to thwart the malignancy — but to no avail.

Mac faced spinal surgery, multitudes of hospital visits, and more, bravely fighting for his life along the way.

“These tumors were growing very fast,” Sinise said. “Uncharacteristically fast for Chordoma.”

Mac had to resign from his position with the  Gary Sinise Foundation  as he mustered the energy to fight on, relying on faith to cope and process. Throughout the ordeal, Mac prayed, journaled — and revisited creating music he started years before but never completed.

“Early 2023, he said to me, ‘Dad, you know, there’s some music that I never finished in college, and I think I’d like to try to finish it,'” Sinise recalled. “And he hadn’t been thinking about music much at all, really, but early 2023, he starts talking about that.”

So, Mac embarked on that mission, partnering with a friend to help him see it to fruition. By July 2023, he was in the studio recording a beautiful piece called “Arctic Circles,” a song that left Sinise emotional.

“I was just a sobbing mess when I went to the recording studio with him, because he hadn’t played any of it for me at all,” he said. “I had never heard it when he wrote it in college.”

Sinise continued, “I was so unprepared for what I was going to hear. It was all a surprise, and it was all a beautiful, beautiful moment to hear.”

When the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, last year, Mac was able to continue working on an album, a quest sparked by his revisiting of “Arctic Circles.”

The Roots of Mac’s Love for Music

As Sinise recounted, the roots of  Mac’s love for music ran deep , being fostered early on when Sinise and his wife, Moira, bought Mac a drum set.

Sinise said his son was immediately a natural who was quickly able to play a rock beat.

His musical chops only grew over the years, as he played throughout high school and later went to college for music, studying composition and songwriting.

“He got out of college [and] toured around Europe … with different bands, and around the states with different bands,” Sinise said. “I think, in his heart, eventually, he wanted to … be a composer.”

In early November — just two months before his death — Mac was back in the studio in Nashville recording more music, assembling a record that will now be sold to benefit his father’s foundation.

“Mac thought, you know, if there were any sales, he’d like the money to go to help the troops and veterans,” Sinise said. “So, we put it on  pre-sale at GarySiniseFoundation.org . … there’s well over 2,000 pre-orders for the record.”

The record’s completion was the recognition of one of Mac’s ultimate goals, according to his dad.

“He fulfilled his dream,” Sinise said. “He accomplished what he was looking to do, and he was happy at the end of his life — and that’s comforting for our family for sure.”

How Faith Sustained Mac

Despite Mac’s struggles, Sinise said his son’s spirit was truly uplifted and bright, with his faith supporting him throughout his tribulations.

“I know his faith played a strong part in helping to sustain him through this battle,” Sinise said. “And I was there with him every step of the way in these hospital stays and with [him] those final days before he died and saw him struggling.”

He continued, “But I knew that he was fulfilled with what he’d accomplished at the end.”

Sinise, who is also a man of deep faith, was candid about the struggles of being a loving father watching his son suffer, especially as his wife, Moira, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer just months before Mac’s diagnosis, herself facing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

The family confronted a grueling journey in 2018 and through subsequent years — one that would leave anyone reeling. But Sinise still appears grateful and reflective, looking back at how much his son taught him along the way.

“Have there been times where I just kind of fell down on the stairs and kind of let the emotion out … because, at times, I didn’t know what else to do?” he said, admitting he has faced such a circumstance. “I was trying to do everything I could to find solutions for Mac and his cancer.”

Yet Sinise got back up, pressed on, and is now sharing his son’s legacy to inspire others.

The actor had seen intense pain and suffering many times before, but from a very different perspective. Sinise’s foundation serves veterans and their families — men and women who have given their all for America and who often find themselves in great need of emotional and physical support.

“All those broken families that I’ve had the privilege to touch over the years — our veterans, and first responders, and Gold Star kids … they’ve all had those moments where they buckle, and they fall down,” Sinise said. “Somebody has to reach out, and touch you, and help to pick you up.”

While he said he’s had the privilege of doing this for others, he now is grateful others have also done the same for him. After Mac’s death, he decided to make the family’s private battle public to help inspire others through his journey.

Mac’s Reflections

As Mac’s life came to a close, Sinise said his son was thinking a lot about his mortality, recognizing “cancer was beating him” and realizing what that would mean. He spent time reading a St. Augustine prayer book that contained underlined text and his thoughts, giving a lens into his spiritual condition.

“That was his special prayer book that he left his mother,” Sinise said. “He wrote in it, ‘At my passing, give to mom,’ and a lot of things [are] underlined in there.”

Mac also left behind media files that now offer the family even greater insight into what was streaming through his heart and mind as he approached the end of his cancer fight.

“I’ve discovered a lot of stuff on his iPhone and iPad that he wrote, even things that he recorded, you know, selfies of him talking to the camera about what he was thinking and what he was feeling,” Sinise said. “And, so I knew he was preparing himself as much as possible, and my job was just to keep trying to find drugs, keep trying to fight, and I never wanted to give up, even in the hospital in those final days.”

Sinise reflected on Mac’s final hospital stay, recalling how he initially hoped it would be like every other medical bump in the road. Mac would stabilize, go home, and reorient.

But this time was tragically different.

“In all my 69 years … sorrowful moments or painful moments along the way, I’ve never experienced a sorrow and a pain like this,” Sinise said, speaking about the hours and minutes leading up to Mac’s death. “He was beginning to let go. The fight was going out of him.”

Sinise recalled sitting in the hospital room that morning and praying, knowing full well what was likely before him. Usually, the pulmonary doctor would walk in, and the actor would ask what new medicine or tool they could try.

But that didn’t happen this time.

“This time, he just sat down and stared at me,” Sinise said. “And I stared back at him, and then I just asked him if I should start making calls, so I did.”

Not long after, Mac passed away.

Sinise has since been blown away by the support from friends, family – and strangers.

“After I posted the story, it’s incredible the amount of love that poured out to us after people read that the media picked it up,” he said. “So, it went all over the place, but social media picked it up, and millions of people saw it, and we started to receive this outpouring of support, and love, and expressions of grief, and sharing their own experiences of losing their own sons or daughters.”

Sinise and his family have now been working to help the Chordoma Foundation so that other families can be spared the same pain and suffering they experienced.

While he said he’s had the privilege of doing this for others, he now is grateful others have also done the same for him. After Mac’s death, he decided to make the family’s private battle public to help inspire others through his journey.

Mac’s Reflections

As Mac’s life came to a close, Sinise said his son was thinking a lot about his mortality, recognizing “cancer was beating him” and realizing what that would mean. He spent time reading a St. Augustine prayer book that contained underlined text and his thoughts, giving a lens into his spiritual condition.

“That was his special prayer book that he left his mother,” Sinise said. “He wrote in it, ‘At my passing, give to mom,’ and a lot of things [are] underlined in there.”

Mac also left behind media files that now offer the family even greater insight into what was streaming through his heart and mind as he approached the end of his cancer fight.

“I’ve discovered a lot of stuff on his iPhone and iPad that he wrote, even things that he recorded, you know, selfies of him talking to the camera about what he was thinking and what he was feeling,” Sinise said. “And, so I knew he was preparing himself as much as possible, and my job was just to keep trying to find drugs, keep trying to fight, and I never wanted to give up, even in the hospital in those final days.”

Sinise reflected on Mac’s final hospital stay, recalling how he initially hoped it would be like every other medical bump in the road. Mac would stabilize, go home, and reorient.

But this time was tragically different.

“In all my 69 years … sorrowful moments or painful moments along the way, I’ve never experienced a sorrow and a pain like this,” Sinise said, speaking about the hours and minutes leading up to Mac’s death. “He was beginning to let go. The fight was going out of him.”

Sinise recalled sitting in the hospital room that morning and praying, knowing full well what was likely before him. Usually, the pulmonary doctor would walk in, and the actor would ask what new medicine or tool they could try.

But that didn’t happen this time.

“This time, he just sat down and stared at me,” Sinise said. “And I stared back at him, and then I just asked him if I should start making calls, so I did.”

Not long after, Mac passed away.

Sinise has since been blown away by the support from friends, family – and strangers.

“After I posted the story, it’s incredible the amount of love that poured out to us after people read that the media picked it up,” he said. “So, it went all over the place, but social media picked it up, and millions of people saw it, and we started to receive this outpouring of support, and love, and expressions of grief, and sharing their own experiences of losing their own sons or daughters.”

Sinise and his family have now been working to help the Chordoma Foundation so that other families can be spared the same pain and suffering they experienced.
