A perfect Uluwatu day trip, Bali. Things to do on a one day Uluwatu itinerary

There are some amazing things to do on a Uluwatu day trip, from beautiful beaches to panoramic coastal viewpoints and fantastic cultural activities. It was my favourite place during my first trip to Bali – below is my one day in Uluwatu itinerary!

After being holed up in Canggu for a couple of days, I begged my hostel to get me out for the day. They suggested a Uluwatu day trip itinerary that made for a fab day out.

Things to do on a Uluwatu day trip:

Garuda wisnu kencana cultural park.

My first stop was Garuda Wisnu Kencana, which is famous for its giant statues. It covers a fairly large area, and catching a glimpse of some bloody massive statues is also home to a gorgeous panoramic view over Bali and an amphitheatre. The amphitheatre has daily Balinese performances. It was cool to see people playing traditional Balinese music while others danced in their traditional costumes.

I didn’t really see other Western tourists there but around 11am tour buses piled into the car park like it was the only place left on earth. So I would recommend heading to this spot early. Thankfully I was leaving at this point so got to explore without the swarms!

This was my most expensive spot of the day – 125000 – which includes a free drink, access to the full grounds and a return shuttle bus to the largest statue.

ULUWATU TEMPLE

This was my absolute highlight of the Uluwatu day trip and unquestionably worth doing. The temple is upon a cliffside and you can take a walk along the cliff-edge in either direction – or both directions, as most people chose to. I was there on a windy day and hearing the sea crash against the rocks below made reminded me of gorgeous old literature; the atmospheric setting where some great story begins.

Uluwatu Temple was built in the 11th century. It is popular to visit Uluwatu Temple for sunset (around 5 pm, dependent on the month). You can then stay to see the traditional Kecak dance performance at 18:00 – another reason to add the temple to your Bali bucket list. It costs an additional 150K IDR (on top of the temple entrance fee) if you decide to stay for the dance.

The entry fee was 30000 for adults or 20000 for kids .

PANDAWA BEACH

I spent the afternoon being taken to a couple of beaches. The first, Pandawa Beach, would be perfect for a beach day. It was a vast stretch of white sand surrounded by limestone cliffs. It’s easy to find your own little spot to relax for a while. Having been solo and restless and not in luck with the sun, I didn’t stay for so long and was off to my next beautiful spot…

Padawa Beach was 15000 IDR entry.

PADANG PADANG BEACH

I really liked Padang Padang Beach (also known as Thomas Beach) because the rocks made for a more atmospheric, picturesque setting. I even walked down to the beach via a stone staircase which passes through a cave! As a restless solo traveller, I’m not so good at taking a breather, so a more dramatic setting was perfect for me. The main beach was smallish and relatively cramped, but walking along just a little, I found some more private coves hidden between the rocks.

This calm beach is perfect for avoiding crowds. Relax with a coconut, swim in the calmer waters or enjoy snorkelling in the stunning ocean. Despite being somewhat of a Uluwatu hidden gem , Padang Padang Beach is still in a handy location with plenty of restaurants nearby.

The truth about this photo? It was actually raining! So kudos to beautiful Uluwatu beaches for being so gorgeous even on a rainy.

Besides the stunning Padawa Beach and Padang Padang Beach, there are many more stunning sandy stretches along the Uluwatu coastline. These beautiful Uluwatu beaches include:

SULUBAN BEACH

Escape down 100 steep steps towards Suluban Beach, Bali. Thankfully well-maintained, the walk down is safe while still feeling like a mini adventure! To find the stairs, head to the entrance on Google Maps or through the Single Fin bar – a great place to kick back and relax with a cold beer or soft drink.

You’ll cool down under the shaded cave at the bottom of the walk down or in the crystal clear water below. With overhanging limestone cliffs surrounding this small sandy cove, it’s definitely a beautiful spot.

Check the tide first and be aware of sharp stones and coral below the water’s surface – it’s not the best beach for swimming.

BINGIN BEACH

Bingin Beach is a great place to grab lunch at a scenic spot while visiting one of the restaurants or rent a surfboard and hit the waves. Popular eateries here include Kelly’s Warung, Gooseberry, French Bakery, The Loft, and Lucky Fish – if you know someone who’s already visiting Bingin Beach, one of these restaurants has probably already been recommended to you!

If you prefer more secluded beaches, take a walk along the sand to find smaller coves and derelict beach shacks, which are no longer used – a surreal setting for this idyllic location.

While it is a little challenging to access, there’s a lot to discover here at the bottom of hidden laneways, mysterious rocky outcrops, and stairs. It’s also a great place to swim and enjoy the fish on the reef.

NYANG-NYANG BEACH

This paradise-like 1.5km beach is one of the less accessible beaches due to a steep climb down, but beautiful at the bottom. Walk along the beach to find the shipwreck at Nunggalan Beach.

Due to its far-flung location, Nyang-Nyang Beach feels more untouched and wild than other beaches in this region of Bali. If you can handle the walk and the cheek monkeys at the beginning of the trail down, it’ll definitely be worth your time. Not to mention there are some beautiful lookouts on the way down!

Please note this beach doesn’t have as many facilities as some – no shower or toilet, although umbrellas and sunbeds are usually available. Nonetheless, it’s still one of the most beautiful beaches to visit on a Uluwatu day trip itinerary

The water is shallow, and there are sharp stones under the water – try the spot in front of the Bubble Hotel if you want to swim.

DREAMLAND BEACH

Dreamland Beach is touristy but accessible and has good facilities, including restaurants. It’s popular with beginner surfers, or relaxing on a sunbed and enjoying the sound of the waves.

SURFING IN ULUWATU

As a dyspraxic human, I cannot surf, but I’m sure I’d love to try it if I wasn’t! And surfing on a day trip to Uluwatu is the perfect spot to hit the waves.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner, Bali is full of wonderful surfing spots, and Uluwatu is no exception.

Surfboard rental is possible as well are lessons, so there is no need to worry about buying boards or if you’re starting from scratch.

Padang Padang Beach is said to be one of the best surf spots in Bali, with breaks suitable for both beginner and expert surfers depending on which area you surf in. Alternatively, Bingin Beach or Balangan are popular. Suluban Beach is a famous surfing area for highly-experienced surfers. Beginners should only surf Padang Padang Right when in Uluwatu.

The cost of renting a surfboard is usually from 8 USD a day, though prices widely vary. A surf lesson will cost more than 30-35 USD. A well-reviewed surf school may cost slightly more.

The best times to surf are in the dry season, from May to October, and from the low-mid tide.

ULUWATU SUNSETS

You’d be mad not to finish your day trip to Uluwatu with a sunset, particularly as the sun sets early in Bali, and you can still return to your accommodation for a good time even if you’re staying elsewhere.

Check out TEBING KARANG BOMA to watch the sunset from the cliffs! The roar of the waves crashing upon the cliffs below as the sun sets behind the horizon is a truly tranquil experience. Perfect.

Another option for sunset is the gorgeous Balangan Viewpoint . Looking over the stunning 200m Balangan Beach and beyond, the West-facing viewpoint is perfect for sunset. As always, be careful when visiting cliffside viewpoints and don’t tread on any rocks that loom over the head, as some are unstable.

Or head to Tegal Wangi Beach Cave for a unique sunset adventure. The beach here is very small, but it’s a little off-the-beaten-track, so it doesn’t feel cramped. Walk along Tegal Wangi Beach to find the two sea caves!.

Besides spending one day in Uluwatu, there are also many attractions on the Bukit Peninsula all the way to Nusa Dua.

PLACES TO EAT IN ULUWATU

Alongside the little local beachside cafes and restaurants, Uluwatu has many top-recommended eateries to enjoy during a Uluwatu day trip.

Best for local food: Visit Campur Campur for proper, tasty Indonesian food. Great for any backpackers who are on a budget! Best for vegans: While most restaurants in Uluwatu will have vegan options, Drifter Cafe is recommended for its tasty array of plant-based options. Head to Ulu Garden for sumptuous, veggie-packed foodie options, or The Cashew Tree for wholesome, al fresco dining. If you’re into healthy foods, try Lands End Cafe .

Best for brunch: Try The Loft for a chilled-out and trendy brunch spot. Or go to Gooseberry Cafe , which has a small pool, boutique store, and lovely brunch and dinner menu. For a brunch at any time, try Ours Bali , an all-day cafe.

Best for Sunset: Try any beachside restaurants if you’re looking for a sundowner, or go to Mana Uluwatu for a delicious meal with epic lookouts. Alternatively, go to one of the beach clubs below for drinks and stunning views.

Best for Coffee: Suka Espresso is the spot for the best coffee and avo toast! Try Nourish if you’re a digital nomad looking for a chilled spot to grab a coffee and get some work done. It also has a wholefoods store onsite if you need to pick up some treats!

Best for dinner: Honestly, most places already mentioned have delicious dinner menus too! But I’ve heard La Baracca, Tabu, and Shaka Riki have yummy menu options.

Beach Clubs: Popular beach clubs in Uluwatu to finish off a beautiful one day in Uluwatu itinerary include: – Single Fin – cocktails and chilled-out sunsets! – Sunday’s Beach Club – chilled-out paradise vibes with yummy food, bonfires, and stunning views – El Kabron – a beautiful beach club near Dreamland Beach – Ulu Cliffhouse – clifftop restaurant with a pool. Check their website for DJs/events – Savaya – this pricier beach club option is a place you should visit at least once during your stay in Bali! It’s beautifully located and lots of fun!

Getting to Uluwatu:

MID-RANGE/HOLIDAYS:

• A private car usually costs around 500K per day, but negotiating is possible. Depending on how many hours you need the driver, it can also cost more. 
• Holiday-makers can book a tour for a more seamless trip around Uluwatu.

ON A BUDGET:

• The most popular way to get to Uluwatu is to rent a scooter for the day from your accommodation in South Bali. This would cost around 30K – 40K IDR per day.
• It is also possible to order a scooter taxi through the go-jek app to Uluwatu for around 70K IDR. However, this is not ideal if you want to see several places as they often aren’t walking distance from each other.

Ultimate Uluwatu Day Tour

Many of the iconic scenes associated with Bali can be found in Uluwatu, the almost an island peninsula in the south of Bali. Uluwatu has spectacular beaches with some of the best surfing on the island, the 2nd most visited temple and the incredible architectural wonder that is the Garuda Wisna Kencana.

This is one of my favourite tours where you can choose one of my pre-planned itineraries but then mix it up on the day depending on how much fun you’re having at one of the many beaches that make Bali famous.

I have personally vetted all the drivers I work with. They text me when they pick you up and again when you have been dropped off at the end of the day. I also email your driver’s name, profile photo, vehicle photo and phone number beforehand to ensure your safety and provide confidence.

You won’t have time to visit all of these in one day, but here are my recommended itineraries. Remember, you can change it anytime you like by discussing it with your driver, and you don’t have to visit any of the beach clubs I mention, but I include them because sundowners overlooking the Indian Ocean is definitely an iconic Uluwatu experience.

Itinerary 1: GWK + Beaches + Sunset Kecak Dance

Garuda Wisnu Kencana

Seriously, this is totally worth visiting. The statue, in honour of Visnu, the Hindu god, and the mythical bird Garuda, is 75 m high and 65 m wide and because it sits on a pedestal the total height is 121 m and weighs 4,000 tonnes.

Melasti Beach is on the southernmost tip of Bali, in an area of Uluwatu called Ungusan. Getting there early means beating the crowds and nabbing a close by car park.

One of my favourite beaches, its tucked away among the washed out cliffs and is a photographers wet dream.

Of of the top 2 attractions in Bali (the other being Tanah Lot), Uluwatu Temple is striking for its location on the southern end of Bali above rocky cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean.

You need to walk downstairs paved in between the rock walls to get access to Padang-Padang beach, but it’s worth it for the sheltered swimming.

It’s only a small beach but you can rent umbrellas and buy basic drinks like fresh coconuts and of course the ubiquitous Bintang.

Bingin Beach is famous for its outstanding and very accessible surf.

Excellent spot to stop for lunch, watch the sunset or party after dark.

Dreamland Beach

El Kabron is a small but reasonably high-end restaurant and “beach club” on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It’s a wonderful sunset spot and the perfect place to wind down after a hard day’s sightseeing around Uluwatu. It isn’t cheap, but you’re paying for the view and the small but spectacular pool overlooking the Indian Ocean.

If you are planning on going, reservations are a must.

Another iconic sunset spot is Rock Bar at the Ayana Resort. Again, if you want to get a table for sunset you must book well in advance.

Rock Bar doesn’t accept reservations unless you are a guest of the report, so its a case of getting there early enough to secure a good spot. They have a dress code, so you can’t rock up straight form the beach.

The drinks are some of the most expensive in Bali, with cocktails ranging from 220-250k and a Bintang will set you back a cool 100k not including 15% tax and service. But if you don;t mind dropping some coin it’s a spectacular and unique location.

Kecak Dance – Uluwatu Temple

One of the most popular attractions in Bali is the nightly Kecak Dance performance held in an intimate amphitheatre on the Uluwatu Temple grounds.

It is a truly unique experience. If you want to make this part of your Uluwatu Day Tour please select the Kecak Dance itinerary, as our driver will need to make reservations for you to purchase your tickets.

There is a queue for those who have made a reservation to buy tickets and a much longer queue for people wanting to buy tickets without a reservation, or it may even be sold out. So having our driver book ahead is the smart move.

If you want to see the Kecak Dance you need to queue for advance bookings at 4:30 pm, buy your tickets and then you can spend some more time exploring the temple grounds before heading back to the amphitheatre no later than 5:30 pm to make sure you get a good seat as it isn’t allocated seating.

Please note this tour doesn’t include the price of the tickets – we just make the reservation and of course, pick you up the show to return to your hotel or villa.

10 Best Day Trips From Canggu, Bali

In this blog post, I bring to you the 10 best day trips from Canggu. If you are based in Canggu for a while, it is a great location for exploring more of the island of Bali. You can reach most places within 2 hours. So, you would be mad to miss the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas.

I was based in Canggu for 3 months and got to see so much of the island from here. So, read on to find out the details..

As you may be aware, a scooter is the best way to get around Bali. Due to the traffic being terrible in Bali, driving by scooter makes it much quicker to get places than driving by car.

If you are not confident driving a scooter, then there are other options. You can ride as a passenger on a scooter to get to your destination. Simply order a bike on the Grab or Gojek app. It is really cheap and ideal for when you are going short distances.

You can also opt to get a car to drive you, you can order these on Grab or Gojek too. The prices are very reasonable and these drivers are plentiful around Canggu.

But do your research before you go to a different destination, to check Grab or Gojek are used so you can get a ride back to Canggu easily (they are not used in all areas). If not, you will need to find a taxi around the area.

The other option is to hire a driver for the day who will take you to your destination, wait for you and drop you back to Canggu. I have used Hendra Adiwijaya many times before and would highly recommend him. His Whatsapp number is +6281907495241 .

I used Fajar Bali located in Batu Bolong, it was the cheapest I found in Canggu. You can rent a scoopy for 70k per day, less than €5. They provide you with helmets also.

Best Day Trips From Canggu, Bali

1. explore ubud.

Ubud (about 1 hour by scooter from Canggu) is a great place for exploring waterfalls & rice fields. But it is also a nice place to relax – the yoga barn is popular for people interested in yoga or meditation classes.

Head to the monkey forest to watch the monkeys. It is 80k to enter and a nice way to spend some time monkey spotting.

While you are near the centre, take a walk through the art market & pick up some souvenirs. Don’t be afraid to haggle.

If you fancy a scenic stroll, why not do the Campuhan Ridge Walk ? It offers some great rice field views and even better, it’s free.

Then make your way to Umah Pakel coffee plantation & Tegallalang rice terrace . Taste the most expensive coffee in the world (Luwak coffee) before taking in the incredible views of the rice terraces.

If you fancy learning how to cook some traditional Balinese dishes, then do this cooking class . It was really enjoyable and you get a big feed at the end.

On the way back, head to Tegenungan waterfall . It costs only 20k/€1.25 to get in.

2. Go beach hopping in Uluwatu

The second of the day trips from Canggu is Uluwatu. It is roughly 1 hour by scooter from Canggu.

Stop by some of the beautiful beaches. Here are some of my favourites – Thomas beach, Suluban beach, Bingin beach and Nyang Nyang beach.

If it is a beach club vibe you are looking for, then head to Sundays Beach Club . Or go to Uluwatu temple to see a Kecak fire dance , for a unique experience.

GWK cultural park is another option when you are in Uluwatu. Here you can see the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue which stands 122 metres in height and can be seen from miles away as well as other attractions.

If you are a thrill seeker, why not go paragliding on Nyang Nyang Beach? You can book with Bali Paragliding and it costs about 1 million IDR/ €60.

3. Hike to the summit of Mount Batur

Arrange a tour to climb Mt. Batur for sunrise. Mt. Batur is an active volcano , last erupting in 2000. We went on a tour from Canggu where you get picked up around 1am and taken to Mt Batur, over a 2 hour drive .

Once you arrive, you will get some food and drink (we had tea/coffee and fried banana) before you start the trek. You will get some more food at the top while you wait for the sunrise.

Unfortunately, the day we did it, we got no view, just plenty of fog. But we went in February, which is the rainy season and knew that we were not guaranteed good weather. You have a much higher chance of a clearer view if you go between May and September.

You can do the hike in runners and shorts but be sure to take an extra layer or two for the top as it gets chilly. Also, bring some water. It takes between 1 and 2 hours to go up and a little shorter to come back down. We were up in 1 hour 40 minutes and had a decent pace.

You will be back in Canggu around lunch time (12 or 1). But try not to organise anything for the rest of the day if you can because you will be tired!

You can book a tour here through ‘get your guide’ which includes a visit to a coffee plantation where you can try the famous luwak coffee. It works out cheaper per person if you have 2 or more going due to the transfer costs.

4. Go swimming in the Munduk waterfalls

Head to Munduk for a day to experience the wonderful lakes and waterfalls. It is about 2 hours north of Canggu .

Munduk is a true gem, hidden away from big crowds of tourists. I have written a separate blog on a 2 day Munduk itinerary . However, it is possible to do it in a day if you go early in the morning and come back late in the evening.

You could hit Banyumala waterfall, twin lake view point and the 4 of the Munduk waterfalls – Golden Valley, Red Coral, Labuhan Kebo, Melanting, which is Day 2 in my itinerary.

5. Walk to Seminyak at sunset

A nice, relaxing thing to do on a free day in Canggu is to walk to Seminyak and watch the sunset as you walk along the beach. If you plan in advance and go when the tide is low, then you can comfortably walk from Canggu to Seminyak.

If you start at Batu Bolong, you will pass through Berawa beach, Batu Belig, Petitenget Beach and then Seminyak. Stop along the way for a drink.

We set off at 4:30pm and were back for 7pm just as it was dark. It takes 1 hour to walk from Canggu to Seminyak so a 2 hour return trip .

6. Go shopping in Kuta

If you are missing some of your favourite shops from back home, then pay a visit to the beachwalk shopping centre in Kuta, they might just have what you are looking for. It has a variety of international brands such as Adidas, Asics, Sephora, Zara and more.

Also, there is a waterpark in Kuta called Waterbom Bali which has good reviews and would make for a great day out.

7. See the temple at Tanah Lot

Just a short spin by scooter, 25 minutes from Canggu is Tanah Lot temple. It is 20k/€1.25 to enter. A nice time to go is for sunset, where you can watch a fire dance there too.

8. Visit Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan were my favourite islands that I have visited near Bali. I loved the unbelievable scenery, the variety of activities & places to see. It is perfect for a short getaway from Bali.

It takes just 30 minutes by fast boat from Sanur Harbour. Sanur is less than an hour by scooter. I loved that it was small and really easy to get around by scooter.

Start off with a 30 minute mangrove tour. Then head to Dream Beach & Devils Tears. Afterwards, cross over the yellow bridge to Nusa Ceningan where you can see the Blue Lagoon . This is another location offering stunning views and such blue water.

9. Discover the beaches and green landscapes of Nusa Penida

Another great day trip from Canggu is to head to Nusa Penida. About 40 minutes on a boat from Sanur, you arrive at stunning green landscapes, cliffs and white sand beaches you won’t want to miss.

Although ideally you will want to spend a few nights there, it is possible to see 2-3 of the main attractions in one day.

You can get boats out as early as 7:30 which will have you at Penida before 8:30 and the latest boats are at 17:00. I use 12goasia to book tickets and 1 way is around 110k/less that €7.

You could stick to the west and do Kelingking beach, broken beach/Angel Billabong and Crystal Bay. Or you could go east and visit Atuh beach, diamond beach, Thousand Island View and Rumah Pohon Treehouse .

Other cool places to visit if you have the time are Guyangan waterfall, Tembeling beach and Gamat Bay. All of the beaches are stunning on Penida, so you will not be disappointed with wherever you choose.

10. Take a day trip to Tabanan

Rent a scooter and go to Tabanan to visit some waterfalls and rice fields. There are so many waterfalls in this area, Leke Leke and Nung Nung were my favourites.

Nung Nung is about 1 hour 10 minutes on the scooter from Canggu and Leke Leke is about 30 minutes from Nung Nung.

But, there are many others in between to break up the journey, star some on google maps and plan your route before you go.

Leke Leke was 50k/€3 per ticket to enter & Nung Nung was 20k/€1.25.

After Leke Leke, head to Jatiluwih rice terraces for fabulous views of the rice fields. You can drive through them on the scooter, or hop off and go for a walk. It cost 40k/€2.50 per person to enter.

On the way back to Canggu, stop off in Bali Butterfly Park . It was 100k/€6 to enter, more expensive than most other attractions but it was really worth it.

The guide puts butterflies and moths on you and lets you hold leaf and stick insects as well.

A bonus destination I want to mention is the Gili Islands. These islands are a great place to go for a weekend, I would recommend staying there for at least 2 nights and seeing at least 2 of the islands. Read here to find out how to get to the Gili islands from Canggu .

On the southern coast of the paradise island of Bali, you will find the beautiful Bukit peninsula and the incredible cliffs of Uluwatu. All across this part of Bali, you will find an unbelievable amount of incredible sights , awesome activities, and beautiful beaches. When in the south of Bali, a day trip to Uluwatu is something everyone should enjoy, so with this full Uluwatu itinerary you can get planning your own.

Day Trip to Uluwatu Itinerary

With this full-day trip to Uluwatu, you will experience the best sights the Bukit Peninsula has to offer, including haunted theme parks, beautiful temples, head-scratching discoveries, crystal clear waters and the best sunset spot you will find in Bali . Let’s get going!

Parking Fee – 10k IDR

The day starts off just north of the Bukit peninsula, at the Taman Festival . This is an abandoned theme park on the east coast of Bali, where the eery atmosphere and dark history keeps locals away.

Often called the “spooky ghost town of Sanur”, locals do not like to come to this place as it is believed to be home to lost spirits. Stories of cannabilistic crocodiles, wandering souls and giant bats are enough to keep even the bravest away.

After opening in 1997, the park quickly went out of business due to financial difficulties and was passed over to the government. Today, you are free to explore the crumbling buildings or what was envisioned to be a place for shows and festivities, however now lies in ruin.

Upon entrance to the park, you will most likely be greeted by a group asking for “parking fees”, despite the grounds being free to access. It is not a huge amount, however, so it is easier to pay and help support the local community.

When walking around, notice the graffiti art mixed with the classic Balinese architecture around the park. One of the most incredible parts of this area is how Mother Nature has begun to reclaim what was once her own, with the jungle seeping into the manmade structures, returning it once again to rubble.

Be careful during your visit, as a lot of the ground is covered in broken glass and rubble. Cuts and twisted ankles can easily happen if you are not cautious.

In the centre of the peninsula you will find one of Bali’s more bizarre attractions. Sitting in the middle of a field, with no real explanation of how it came to be there, you will find an abandoned Boeing 737 airplane. This is a definite photo stop on your day trip to Uluwatu, being one of the most unique sights on the island.

What is truly mind-blowing about this place is that there is little to no knowledge of how the plane actually got there or why it is there. There are rumours that it was purchased and built in situ, with the intention of converting it into a restaurant. However, this plan obviously fell through as here it is, years later and slowly rusting away.

There have been signs of life with this plane in recent years, having been given a good clean and reoriented to face a different direction in 2018. Maybe this plane will be the next hotspot restaurant in Bali?

This abandoned plane is actually one of two that can be found around the island of Bali, with its cousin situated about 5 miles away. There is little to no connection between the two, apart from little knowledge of how they came to be.

Uluwatu Temple Entrance Fee – 30k IDR

Next stop is a visit to the famous Uluwatu temple , sitting on the west coast of the Bukit Peninsula. This beautiful religious monument is perched right on the edge of the cliff, overlooking the horizon of water 70m below.

This temple is actually one of Bali’s 6 main temples, dotted across the island, built to protect each corner of the island from evil. Surrounded by jungle, the temple itself is said to be guarded by hundreds of local monkeys. These guys are actually pretty cute in real life, just be careful with food and drink or any valuables, as they will steal them in a heartbeat.

The Balinese locals believe that it is at this temple that the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Siva merge here. The powers of these Gods are believed to protect the island from any evil sea spirits that may try to attack Bali.

The temple itself will take you around one hour to get from one end to the other. Visitors are required to wear a sarong and sash to cover any skin as a mark of respect. The westerly location of this spot makes it a fantastic place to watch the sunset, however its popularity takes away from the peace and tranquility.

Suluban Beach Entrance Fee – FREE

Parking Fee – Scooter 5k IDR / Car 15k IDR

Just north of the Uluwatu Temple is one of the most interesting beaches in Bali . Sitting at the bottom of the huge, Uluwatu cliffs, you will find the hidden cave entrance to Suluban Beach. In order to get to the beach itself, you must visit at low tide and wind your way around and under the rocky walls and roof of the natural, sea cave.

On the way down to the beach, you will walk through a miniature town perched on the side of the cliff. Restaurants, shops, cafes and bars are all built into this cliffside staircase, making the most of the daily traffic of surfers and other beach-goers who visit Suluban Beach.,

Once you reach the bottom, you will find yourself in a huge cave with a towering roof and a small light at the other side. You can hear the waves echoing through this gap in the rock wall, indicating that it is this way to the sea.

On the beach itself, you will see all of the surfers in action, as most of Uluwatu’s beaches are the best surfing spots in Bali. At the far left hand side of the beach, you will see the beached remains of an old boat, which was washed up on the shore years ago. This area of the beach is a good place to chill out in the water, as the shallow reefs calm the waves and make a relaxing pool to bathe in. The sea isn’t deep, only reaching your knees, however it is a nice place to sit and relax in the warm waters without getting too hot in the sun.

Spend the rest of your day relaxing in these warm waters and get ready for the best sunset spot in Bali.

Karang Boma Sunset Cliff Entrance Fee – 10k IDR

Head back south again, past the Uluwatu Temple and arrive at the Karang Boma sunset cliff . This cliffside field is the perfect place to kick back on a blanket on the grass, admire the stunning view of the horizon and relax to the sounds of the crashing waves 100m below.

This cliffside spot is one of Bali’s best sunset Instagram locations, however it is still relatively undiscovered compared to most of these locations. A lot of the people you will see at Karang Boma are all locals, gathered to enjoy the natural light show of another Bali sunset.

Finding the sunset spot itself can be a little tricky, however if you know where you are going it is straight forward. All you will need to do is follow Google maps to the below coordinates and you will find a small warung named Warung TG.

Karang Boma Cliff Sunset Spot Location – 8°50’11.6″S 115°05’19.1″E

From here, all you need to do is follow the road past the warung and keep following it until you reach the ticket barrier. Pay for your parking here and do not admit to the possession of a drone or you will be charged extra , before following the road once again round the twists and turns.

Eventually you will reach a dead-end with a gated residence. To the right of this gate, you will see a dirt path and this is where you want to go. Follow this path another 200m and you will arrive at the parking area. Leave your bike here and follow the footpath until you come to the open field that leads to the cliff edge.

We recommend you arrive around an hour before sunset in order to make the most of the golden hour lighting, snap all of the pictures you need and then just sit and enjoy the view as the sun disappears over the horizon.

How to Get Around Bali

When it comes to getting around Uluwatu, and indeed Bali in general, you have two main choices. You can either hire a driver and pay a lot of money, or you can rent a bike and pay less money. Both of these options have their advantages and disadvantages, and are obviously suitable for different people.

Hiring a Driver in Bali

There are multiple ways for you to hire a driver in Bali, depending on how long you need a driver for and what you are willing to pay. You can either hire a driver for easy, A to B journeys, or you can hire one for an entire day’s expedition.

Drivers can be hired directly from your accommodation, from a taxi company like “BlueBird Cabs” or one of the drivers you see lining the streets, usually shouting “taxi”. These options are all the most expensive way to get around Bali, even if you are adept at the art of bartering, in which case it will be likely to cost around 600k IDR for a full day rental.

A cheaper way of hiring a driver is through the internet taxi apps, such as GoJek or Grab. These offer more standard rate  prices and will cost you around 350k IDR for an 8 hour day.

The advantage of hiring a driver is the fact that you will have your own personal photographer and tour guide for the entire day. You can either choose to follow an itinerary preset by the driver or you can instruct them of your own (like this awesome Uluwatu Itinerary here!!).

Renting a Scooter in Bali

The other choice, and the one we always recommend, is to rent a scooter for yourself and drive around the island. Renting a scooter in Bali is cheap, easy and simply liberating!

You can hire a scooter from most accommodations or through a private rental company, which are dotted all over the island. Rental costs will vary depending on the length of time you are going to rent for, with longer rentals costing less per day than short term ones. Typically, renting a scooter in Bali will cost you around 40k-70k IDR per day.

Fuel in Bali is also seriously cheap, with the cost of petrol being between 7k-10k per litre. The best place to buy petrol is at the local shops you will see whilst driving around that have bottles of liquid sitting outside. This is just as cheap as if you were to buy it from the petrol pumps and you will be supporting the local community by purchasing it here.

During our trip to Bali, we managed to drive from the southern coast to the northern coast for just 50k IDR in petrol costs.

How to Get an Indonesian Visa

Getting a visa for Indonesia is a simple process is you are from one of the countries on the Visa on Arrival list . All you will need to do is turn up at the immigration desk in Bali and you will be automatically granted a 30 day visa. You may be asked for proof of an onward journey within these 30 days, but that shouldn’t be an issue.

What to Pack for Uluwatu

Bali is blessed with a tropical climate, meaning it is warm pretty much all year round. There are only two seasons when it comes to Bali: rain season and dry season. Luckily this makes packing for Bali a very easy task, with the only necessities being light clothing and a waterproof.

The southern areas of Bali are subject to extreme heat throughout the year, with midday temperatures reaching 35-40oC. We recommend packing a light waterproof in case of freak downpours and wearing something that covers a lot of your skin, for when you are riding the bike in the strong sunshine. You can then change into a lighter piece of clothing once you are out of the midday sun.

Heat stroke and sunburn are a serious issue in this part of the world, especially during full day tours of this part of Bali. Make sure you pack plenty of water, either bottled or with a filter water bottle , and take regular breaks from the sunshine throughout the day.

We would also recommend that you bring as much sunscreen into Bali as possible, as the prices of it on the island as extortionate. A small bottle of sunscreen will set you back as much as 170k IDR.

Exploring Uluwatu, Bali in 1 Day: 12-Hour Itinerary

Looking to discover Bali’s southern tip of Uluwatu with a self-guided itinerary? From quiet beaches to dramatic cliff views and delicious dining in between, Uluwatu is perfect for those who enjoy a sense of adventure with relaxing and good eats along the way. After a day of hitting these spots along the west coast of the Bukit peninsula, you’ll finish the day with sun-kissed skin, sea salt hair and a big smile on your face!

Before arriving in Bali, we expected the island to be overrated. We’ll admit we didn’t have high hopes for its beaches and landscapes and thought it might be too touristy in most places for our liking. We were excited nonetheless knowing that Bali could offer us a ton of fun in other ways! But in truth, just after day 3 of us being in Bali, we realized that we stumbled on one corner of the island that simply wasn’t overrated like we thought.

The peninsula of Bukit is much quieter than the rest of mainland Bali. You may already know that Nusa Dua on the east side of the peninsula has high end luxury resorts all along the coast. On the west side in Uluwatu you’ll find the perfect balance between luxury Balinese retreats and places that call out to everyone no matter their budget.

After spending a month in Bali and exploring this precious side of the island by motorbike, we’ve been able to piece together this itinerary that will give you a good grasp of the Uluwatu area. From dramatic and peaceful sceneries to great food and cultural immersion, here’s how you can discover the best of Uluwatu on your own in 12 hours.

How to Get Around Uluwatu

Rent your own motorbike.

You’ll find out soon enough that the best way to get around Bali in general is by scooter or motorbike. For just $5 USD, you could rent your own motorbike with two reliable helmets for the whole day! On top of that, delivery and return service of the bike are included for free if you’re staying in Seminyak .

It was more than easy for us to get the hang of riding a scooter in Bali. Yes, in Indonesia they drive on the left-hand-side as they do in quite a few Southeast Asian countries. But following the ways of the road, traffic and signs wasn’t much different than what we’ve already experienced. The only thing that had us sweating was the number of vehicles on the road coming back to Seminyak from Uluwatu at night. Some drivers are crazy and we’re certainly not used to being passed with just inches between us and the next person!

Renting your own motorbike is our most recommended mode of transportation. It gives you all the flexibility you need, you get to discover a lot more on your own, it’s a local experience and it comes with the lowest cost. BUT in the recent months, Bali officials have been in talks regarding putting in place a ban on renting motorbikes to tourists. I know! That really puts a damper on things. But if anything does happen, it won’t be until the end of 2023.

If you’re ultimately hoping to rent a motorbike in Bali, make sure you get your International Driving Permit in order. In the US, you can apply for your IDP through AAA. In Canada, we can get ours through CAA – AMA for our fellow Albertans! It’s actually very easy to register and quite affordable at around $30 depending on where you live. You’ll want to bring your IDP anytime you leave your home country when there’s a possibility you might rent your own vehicle.

Hire A Private Guide / Rider

If you don’t want to take the chance of driving your own motorbike through the bustling streets of Bali, the next best thing is to hire a private guide and easy rider (as in your guide will act as your scooter driver)! Not only can you depend on the local expertise of your guide to take you to the best spots but you can also rely on a highly experienced scooter driver. If you’re not that comfortable behind a bike, this might be the way to go! Especially if you’re travelling solo.

For 12 hours, you can hop on the back and take in the views as you venture with your local guide to all the spots you want to visit on your own custom itinerary. Your guide will know all the ins and outs of various spots, and you won’t get lost in the middle trying to rely on your own navigation.

Hire a Private Car / Driver

If you’re striving for ultimate comfort, it’s actually so affordable to hire a private driver for the entire day. The pricing honestly makes so much sense if you’re in a group of two or more. We hired our own private driver to explore other parts of the island and it make life so easy. We never had to worry about where to park, the direction for entry and landmarks, or about potentially injuring ourselves en route to our destinations.

If the ban on renting motorbikes for tourists is put in place, you know you’ve got viable and affordable options!

Best Accommodations in Uluwatu

It’s worth the try to stay in Uluwatu for a portion of your Bali trip. For top of the top, Jumeirah Bali was one of our most luxurious stays ever . Nothing could compete with that villa and the ocean view we got from there and Dreamland Beach!

For some great options to fit a wide range of budgets, from hotels to vacation rentals, check out the map below! If you’re staying anywhere between Uluwatu Temple and Jimbaran Beach, you’re gold. Even better if you’re walking distance from a beach or cliffside view!

One thing to know about Uluwatu is that the vibe is distinctively quiet and chill. Perfect for a romantic retreat for couples or some quiet time on your own soaking in Bali’s cliff sides! Yes, there are beach clubs and parties and tons of amazing places to mingle. But it’s definitely a pocket of Bali that’s quieter than the hustle and bustle of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu. Not as much nightlife but fewer crowds! Uluwatu is on the up and up, and more and more affordable accommodations and delicious dining spots are popping up, which makes it worthwhile for you to set aside a few days to stay in the area while you venture it.

Itinerary Breakdown

There’s a lot than can be explored in Uluwatu, especially when you only have a day to spare! From sun up to sun down, we’ve selected six of the best spots to witness for yourselves along the western coast of Bali’s Bukit peninsula. There are three different beaches with distinctive views and atmospheres, two sea cliffs and of course, Uluwatu Temple.

The itinerary we’ve put together allows you to start with the spots that typically get busiest later in the day. An earlier arrival means you can get the best experience there without feeling overcrowded. Next, you can work your way south before the afternoon and head back north to enjoy sunset at one of our favourite sunset spots in all of Bali!

Weather is one thing that change your route. It definitely doesn’t always cooperate with you, especially in the tropics like Bali. We had some rain the day we decided to venture around Uluwatu and changed course to enjoy brunch before heading back out to visit more spots. It was all sunshine after that which was definitely very much appreciated for the rest of our afternoon and evening!

If you experience rain on your ride and you opted for your own motorbike, try to avoid the roads for a bit and find a hideout at one of Uluwatu’s many cafés and restaurants.

Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach is an extension of Uluwatu Beach and is essentially a secret beach nestled in a cove of rocky cliffs. The sand is quite soft here and when the tide is low, you can walk out further out to where the jagged rocks create an opening in the water. The tight space means that you might have to share the small stretch of beach with other visitors, but it’s not a problem if you get here before 9am.

There’s a car and bike parking area at the top of the cliff. When you type in Suluban Beach on Google Maps, it takes you straight to this parking lot. From the main road, it can be a little bumpy riding on the narrow brick-laden road to the parking area. We had to go slow on our bikes which was okay for us, but with a car with low clearance, I probably wouldn’t chance it. In the case you hired a driver, the walk along the road is a short one at only 350 m (0.2 miles). Five minutes and you’re there! It’s a slight workout on the way back up, but nothing crazy.

Once you reach the parking area, follow the downhill path that leads to a constructed staircase. It’ll take you all the way down to Suluban Beach and only takes a few minutes to reach! The photo below was taken from a platform along the stone staircase that leads down to the beach.

Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is a 1,000-year-old temple and sits on the Bukit peninsula’s westernmost point. It’s an iconic tourist sight, boasting impressive cliff sides and it’s famous for being an incredible sunset spot. You can witness the traditional Balinese “Kecak” fire dance in the late afternoon or evening from its grand amphitheatre facing out to the ocean.

The Kecak fire dance can be an epic show to watch, but visiting Uluwatu Temple in the early morning when it opens allows you to roam the sight with fewer crowds and enjoy the morning ambiance. Entrance ticket prices apply and are now 50k IDR ($3.50 USD) per adult for foreign visitors. If you opt in for the fire dance show, it’s an additional 150k IDR ($10 USD), or you can book it online through Klook for cheaper and guarantee your spot!

Karang Boma Cliff

One of the quietest spots we came to in all of Uluwatu was Karang Boma Cliff, specifically the Dimastos Sunset Point. It’s an underrated place but is tricky to get to because of the muddy terrain. We didn’t anyone hear but a group of locals who had camped out here the night prior.

Because of the tricky off-road terrain, we parked our bike beside the Costa Del Mar Uluwatu Hotel and walked the 450 m (0.3 miles) to the viewpoint. It was nice to get away from the beaten path and the tourists and visit a place that was genuinely local. There was an entrance fee here that we paid the attendant once we reached the cliff point. Being so close to the Uluwatu Temple, the view we got of the it was incredible!

Shortly after arriving here, we were greeted by the resident troop of monkeys! Every macaque and their second cousin was here as the local group of guys were packing up their tents and the smell of food in the air. If you didn’t get a chance to see these little guys mucking about while at Uluwatu Temple, you’ll likely see them here as they make their rounds along the cliff side! 

We wandered around the quiet park, just the two of us, with a long stick in hand that the lady tending to the viewpoint gave us to ward off any ambitious monkeys. There’s a forested trail that follows along the cliff side and it felt like the first piece of Bali that we had all to ourselves… and the monkeys. But they mostly kept to themselves as we made our way through and back.

Grab Brunch in Uluwatu

There are very few dining spots we still think of today from our Southeast Asia trip that we would definitely want to go back to. Suka Espresso is one of them! We enjoyed a hearty meal as we were starving by the time we got here and got a seat. It does get crowded, so be prepared to wait in line if you get here after 10am like we did. But trust me, it’s worth it!

Between the two of us, we ordered a Chilli Scramble and Mexican Chicken Bowl, which were full brunch meals of their own and soooo tasty. I still dream about that chilli scrambled egg dish! I also had to satisfy my smoothie bowl craving, so we ordered the Dragonfruit Smoothie Bowl to share. That was divine with fruit and nuts galore. On top of that, we had a matcha latte and iced long back coffee. All of that for only 243k IDR ($16)!

It was the refuel we needed to take on the rest of the day. Be sure to check out the Wanderlog map above for some other cafés and restaurants we enjoyed in Uluwatu!

Nyang Nyang Beach

This stretch of beach feels like it goes on forever on the southwestern coast of Bukit. It’s significantly different from the environment we had on Kuta Beach where there was so much trash accumulated on the shores every day. Though Kuta, Legian and Seminyak are great for the party vibes and surfing, they definitely don’t offer a sense of quietness in nature. 

Here at Nyang Nyang Beach, we could experience that. There’s just one little shack that sells some snacks and drinks, built within an unassuming façade. Nothing fancy here, but the lush cliffs and wide shores of the southwestern coast of Bukit. And the beach goes on for miles! We couldn’t see an end in sight, which gave us plenty of space to walk along the shoreline with few people around.

The road to reach Nyang Nyang Beach was a little daunting with our small engine scooter. We were pressing on our breaks the whole way down on the steep incline and even then we were going a little too fast for our liking! Around the bend, I had to hop off and let my husband ride the scooter down, and the walk down was still super steep. And on our way back up, the momentum couldn’t drive our little scooter up the large incline the whole way through! The little engine that sadly couldn’t! Just fair warning to be careful riding down the steep road from the entrance gate.

Bingin Beach

Nyang Nyang Beach was nice and relaxing, but Bingin Beach was lively, fun and boasted spectacular views! We got another taste of hidden beaches like we did at Suluban, where the massive volcanic rocks keep secret a pristine and quiet shore. On the southwest end of Bingin Beach is this hidden cove we escaped to when we got too hot under the sun.

We actually entered the beach by the staircase closest to this end, which is how we came across it. There are a number of entry points to reach Binging Beach from the cliff above depending on where you park. We parked at this motorcycle parking lot marked by a surf board, walked along a narrow passageway before reaching the stairs down. Going down was not bad, but I was sweating a lot on the way up during that hot afternoon.

Thankfully, it was nice cooling off along Bingin Beach before climbing the stairs back up! Bingin Beach is a great spot for surfing with its consistent waves that throw out many perfect barrels at mid-tide. Something to consider if you’re coming here! The water is much clearer than you would find on Seminyak and Kuta Beach, but at low tide, surfing should be reserved for experts only as the corals are shallow close to shore.

Balangan Beach Cliff

Muster the energy for one final spot in this Uluwatu itinerary. Enjoy some dinner before coming here or bring a quick picnic ensemble because if there is one place to have a picnic, it’s here. When we arrived at Balangan Beach Cliff we were blown away by how many locals of all ages and group types had made a spot of their own to enjoy a group feast. At this viewpoint, there are a few levels of built round platforms laid with grass that allow many people to sit and enjoy the view unobstructed.

Many locals came here early enough to set up their portable BBQ dinner with friends and family. We stood for a bit before we ended up having a spot on the stone edge of one of the platforms all to ourselves. As it got dark, a lot of folks, locals and tourists alike, packed up to head home. But we knew that the show was just getting started. And sure enough, the colours started popping in the cloud-streaked sky!

We could see some people gathered along Balangan Beach, but most of the sunset’s audience were here on the widespread cliff. I had to save the best for last and show you what a front row view at the best Uluwatu sunset spot could look like!

Are There Entrance Fees for These Spots in Uluwatu?

As you’ll soon find out shortly after you arrive in Bali, pretty much every viewpoint, beach, waterfall, natural sight you can think of has an entrance fee. Yup, nothing’s free here, but it truly allows the locals to maintain the sights and make sure they’re compensated for their work and for allowing us to visit come onto their land. The fees are often small and very reasonable, especially for the sights in Uluwatu.

Parking and entering Suluban Beach didn’t cost us anything, surprisingly. The dedicated parking area and constructed steps would be a reason to charge admission, but there was nothing of the sort here. That can change, but it would be a small fee.

Uluwatu Temple took a parking fee as there was a gate and parking attendant. Parking is very well organized here and cost us only 1k IDR (less than $0.07!) to park our bike here. I mentioned the admission and fire dance ticket prices for adult foreigners above in the Uluwatu Temple section!

Karang Boma Cliff was pricier in comparison to the other spots considering the fact that the whole trail to the viewpoint was muddy and unpleasant. But the patch of protected green grass and the available facilities to clean up were a nice touch! The attendant charged us 5k IDR ($0.35) per person to come check out the view.

Nyang Nyang Beach operates on a donation basis. The attendant at the gate was very kind and gave a receipt as well. And though the steep road was treacherous, it was incredibly well paved and so was the well maintained parking area right by the beach! There was shelter for our bikes and even painted lines separating the bike parking spots.

Bingin Beach cost us 5k IDR ($0.35) to park our bike where attendants would keep an eye out. We parked first then handed the cash to the attendants when we exited the parking space by foot towards the beach.

Finally, Balangan Beach Cliff was also only 5k IDR ($0.35) to park and enjoy the views for as long as we wanted to. Not bad for the sunset view we got there!

Uluwatu is just one piece of Bali that we’ve come to love. There is so much more to see and experience on this island! But for your first self-guided adventure, this one should be on your list!

Stop 1: Tanah Lot Temple

The Complete Guide to Uluwatu, Bali – Everything You Need to Know

Welcome to Uluwatu – the surfing paradise and beach haven on the southern tip of Bali, Indonesia !

As someone who has spent several days exploring this special area of Bali, I’m excited to provide you with my personal guide to making the most of your own visit to Uluwatu.

Whether you’re a first-timer looking for the top things to see and do, or a returning traveler hoping to uncover some hidden gems, I’ve got you covered. So, let’s get started with the need-to-know basics!

The Best Time to Visit Uluwatu

One of the biggest factors in planning your perfect Uluwatu vacation is when to go. As an equatorial destination, Bali enjoys year-round warm temperatures and sunshine – but the weather does vary slightly throughout the year.

The dry season between April and October is generally considered the best time to visit Uluwatu. During these months you can expect hot, sunny days perfect for surfing, swimming, sunbathing and exploring the temples and landscapes. September and October are the busiest tourist months.

From November to March, the wet season brings increased humidity, daily rain showers and occasionally strong winds. But the weather is still warm and prices are lower, so it can be a good option if you don’t mind a little rain. Surfing conditions also remain excellent.

If you’re flexible with dates, April-June and September-October are ideal times with mostly dry sunny weather, fewer crowds and lower prices before peak season.

Getting to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is located on the southernmost tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. The most common way to reach it is from Bali’s airport in the south.

From Ngurah Rai International Airport: Uluwatu is only 30-60-minute drive south of the airport. The best option is to pre-book a private airport transfer which will take you directly to your hotel. Expect to pay around $15-25 USD each way.

A cheaper option is to take a taxi from the airport arrivals area. Make sure to negotiate the fare first – it should be 400,000 to 500,000 IDR ($25-35 USD).

You can also catch a bus from the airport to Kuta, then transfer to a minibus to Uluwatu. Total journey time is 1-2 hours.

From Kuta/Seminyak: If you’re already in Kuta, Seminyak or elsewhere in south Bali, you can take a taxi or pre-book a driver for the 30-60 minute drive south to Uluwatu.

Minibuses also run regularly during daylight hours for just 50,000 IDR ($3.50 USD) per person each way.

Tip: Be sure to check what part of Uluwatu your hotel is located in, as some areas like Padang Padang Beach are up to 30 mins drive from central Uluwatu.

Where to Stay in Uluwatu

With its cliffs, jungle landscape and string of beautiful beaches, Uluwatu has an awesome range of places to stay. Here are my top recommendations for which areas to stay in Uluwatu:

• Padang Padang/Impossibles Beach  – For direct beach access where you can walk straight onto the sand. Close to the surf.
• Bingin Beach  – More upscale hotels and villas overlooking this famous surf beach. Great sunset views.
• Pandawa Beach  – A stunning and quieter beach, with luxury resorts and ocean view villas.
• Central Uluwatu  – Budget guesthouses and mid-range resorts close to the main attractions like the Uluwatu Temple.
• Nyang Nyang Beach  – A hidden paradise beach reached by stairs down a cliff. Unique eco-resorts offer epic views.
• Balangan Beach  – Relaxed surf beach dotted with cliffside resorts and budget accommodation.

For first-time visitors, I recommend staying as close to the beaches and coast as possible to make the most of Uluwatu’s spectacular ocean scenery.

The Perfect Uluwatu Itinerary For 2 Days

I spent two days in this gorgeous coastal town in Bali which means one thing: Uluwatu itinerary coming your way! You’ll find Uluwatu on the south-west tip of the ‘Bukit Peninsula’ AKA that foot that juts out from the base of Bali, Indonesia . It’s a little out of the way but well worth including in your Southeast Asia itinerary . Uluwatu is not a place where you’ll feel a moment’s stress: it’s a hub for surfing, brunch and sunset chasing. If a busy Bali itinerary has left you feeling weary, get to Uluwatu and unwind in paradise.

How to get around Uluwatu

Scooter: I’d highly recommend hiring a scooter from 70,000 IDR a day. Everything’s fairly spread out but not overly far away so it’s easy to scoot around between beaches and restaurants. Driving a scooter is often the best way to get around Bali since Uber and Grab are prohibited and there isn’t any public transport. Taxi tour: If there’s a couple of you, it’s good value to hire a car and driver. You can ask them to take you wherever you want to go. Book a half-day tour or full-day tour .

2 day Uluwatu itinerary

There are loads of places to stay in Uluwatu but our place was a real find. Tempekan Heritage has clean, comfy rooms and a lovely pool and fitness centre. There’s a restaurant on-site as well as free parking, a garden and a terrace. Check availability from $20 . They also have luxurious villas available. You can add on breakfast from $3!

More Uluwatu accomodation options you might like include:

• Budget hotel – Batu Kandik Homestay is close to Uluwatu Temple and rooms start from $14 including a pool! This is the best option for solo female travel in Bali .
• Luxurious hotel – Ulu Cliffhouse is what dreams are made of! At this 5-star hotel you can expect stylish rooms equipped with iPads, a swimming pool and dreamy coastal views from the terrace. Rooms start from $150.
• Hostel – Surfers House is the best hostel in Uluwatu with a pool, kitchen, tennis table and more. Dorms start from $15 .

Lunch at Ayu’s Food From the Heart

If you’re yet to try the Balinese cuisine , or you just want to eat more of it (don’t blame you!), there’s a really amazing warung across the road from Delali Guest House on Uluwatu Pecatu . For very affordable prices, you can sample all the best Balinese dishes at Ayu’s Food From the Heart . They also serve Indonesia/Western fusion dishes like yummy veggie tempeh burgers, fresh juices and smoothie bowls, plus there’s a cute clothes and souvenir shop on site. The best dish was definitely the gado gado which was served in an enormous messy pile of veggies, egg and satay sauce.

Uluwatu Temple for sunset

The most famous thing to do in Uluwatu is visit Uluwatu Temple , an 11th-century cliffside monument. You can do this any time of day but it’s particularly bucket-list-worthy at sunset. I’d recommend arriving about 5pm, parking up and wandering the cliff edge for daylight views, followed by the dreamy golden hour. The temple on the edge looks stunning with the orange sun sinking behind it. This is Uluwatu’s most iconic view, and one of Bali’s best sunset spots.

One thing you should be super vigilant of at Uluwatu Temple is the mischievous monkeys. I was engrossed taking photos when, all of a sudden, I felt my sunglasses be snatched from my head. Who the…? I whipped around to see a monkey proudly scampering away clutching my (thankfully very fake) Ray-Bans. He preceded to rip them to pieces with his teeth and chuck the lenses over the cliff while a crowd gathered and laughed. The next day I checked the Uluwatu Temple Instagram tag to find multiple photos of the event. The monkeys here are so clever – they’ll snatch food, open bottles and show absolutely no mercy. I’m sure cameras and smartphones have ended up in similar states to my glasses! Uluwatu Temple entrance fee: 30,000 IDR.

Kekak Fire Dance Show

The other reason people visit Uluwatu Temple is to see the Kekak Fire Dance Show at 6pm . Kekak is a style of traditional Balinese dance and it draws a large crowd every evening. Book your ticket here .

Dinner at the Cashew Tree

One of the best restaurants in Uluwatu is the Cashew Tree . It’s a chilled garden brunch spot in the day and a cosy, candlelit (but not cheesy romantic!) restaurant in the evenings. Burgers in Bali may not sound very interesting but these freshly-made patties with avocado, veggies and sticky chutney relish were fantastic. You can choose between sweet potato or courgette fries. We had brunch in Uluwatu elsewhere (more on that next) so while I can’t vouch for it at the Cashew Tree, it looks colourful and delicious…

Day 2 in Uluwatu

Start the second day of your Uluwatu itinerary with the most important meal of the day…

Brunch at Drifter Cafe

One of the best brunch restaurants in Uluwatu is Drifter Cafe . It’s also a surf shop which sets the tone for the laidback, hippie cafe out back. They serve fresh, healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners such as smoothie bowls, salads, poke bowls and tacos. It’s a pescetarian joint so expect no meat but plenty of zesty prawns and fresh mahi-mahi.

Go beach hopping

You can’t come to Uluwatu without stopping in at the beach! Some of the best beaches in Uluwatu include Green Bowl Beach which is a Bali hidden gem , while Bingin Beach and Karma Beach are fun and busy. Thomas Beach is known as the best one for chilling and sunbathing. Uluwatu is one of Bali’s top surfing spots with consistently amazing surf and multiple windows each day. However it’s not known as a beginners spot so you might want to save it for Canggu or Seminyak if you’ve not tried before. Padang Padang Beach on the right side is the best bet for beginners, while pros can try Dreamland and Bingin.

Sunset drinks

They say no Uluwatu itinerary is complete without sinking a Bintang at a cliff bar (I’ll admit I just made that up but I’m sure someone’s said it!). Your two best options are  Single Fin  or Rock Bar . Rock is slightly more upmarket while Single Fin (pictured) is a cheerful traveller option. It’s busy every night and if you want a table you’ll have to book on the website. This is a good idea as it took us ages to find a tiny, outwards-facing corner to squeeze into. It can’t hurt to book a couple of spots in advance in case you visit.

I loved watching surfers ride the waves from my lofty position at Single Fin Bar. I just can’t believe how talented they are – after my few unsuccessful attempts surfing, I know how hard it is! You could watch them for hours.

Jimbaran is a fishing village just 30 minutes north of Uluwatu. It’s famous for its fresh seafood which you can tuck into while sat on the busy, atmospheric beach. So if you run out of Uluwatu evening activities, take your scooter up the coast for a tasty, locally-sourced dinner.

Sundays Beach Club

I’ve never been a beach club type of person – you’ll more likely find me in the sea than paying to sit by a pool. But Sundays Beach Club is an Uluwatu institution so you might wanna check it out. Entry is 450,000 IDR ($30) per day which includes 250,000 IDR food and drink vouchers, kayaks, snorkelling equipment, sunbeds and access to a gorgeous private beach. Pricey for Southeast Asia but probably an idyllic chill day (I didn’t visit myself but I heard good things).

April to October is considered the peak tourist season in Canggu, as well as the rest of Bali. The skies are clear, the water is calmer for surfing, and outdoor activities are more enjoyable. It’s also a popular time for events and festivals, such as the Bali Arts Festival, which takes place in June and July. However, due to the high demand, accommodation prices may be higher, and popular attractions can get crowded.

If you prefer a quieter and more affordable visit, the shoulder seasons of April and October are a good choice. During these months, you can still enjoy pleasant weather and fewer tourists. The surf conditions are also ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers.

November to March marks the wet season in Canggu, with higher chances of rain and occasional thunderstorms. While the rain can be sporadic, it doesn’t typically last all day, and there are still plenty of sunny periods. You can arrange for a driver to pick you up directly from the airport and take you directly to your accommodation in Canggu. This option is especially ideal if you have a lot of luggage or if you prefer a hassle-free journey.
• Taxi: There are plenty of official taxis available at the airport. Make sure to use the official airport taxi counter to avoid scams. The journey from the airport to Canggu takes around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic. It’s recommended to negotiate the fare beforehand or use the meter to ensure a fair price.
• Go-Jek or Grab: Go-Jek and Grab are popular ride-hailing apps in Bali. You can download the app and book a ride from the airport to Canggu. This option can be more affordable than a taxi, especially during non-peak hours.

There are more than 17,000 islands in Indonesia, but Bali is the bucket-list destination. Popularised by the social media feeds of the Instagram elite, this island is instantly recognizable for its luscious greenery and turquoise waters. Uluwatu and Canggu are two of Bali’s best destinations. Wondering which one to visit? We’ve done the research for you. Read on to find out whether Uluwatu or Canggu is the destination for you. 

Before we get into specifics, let’s get to the grips with the basics of each destination. Uluwatu is on the south-western tip of Bali’s Bukit peninsula. It rose to notoriety in the 1970s as a surfing hotspot , and has been well known amongst the global surfing community ever since. Nowadays, it’s home to some of Bali’s most luxurious resorts, as well as a wide range of pristine sandy beaches. 

Canggu, on the other hand, is a coastal village also in the south of Bali. Its long stretches of beaches and vibrant green rice fields have attracted the attention of the expat community, and it’s become a hub of digital nomads and backpackers. From places to stay to things to do, let’s see how the two destinations measure up.

Uluwatu or Canggu: Accommodation

Every great holiday begins with the perfect place to stay, and Bali has an abundance of beautiful hotels, holiday rentals and hostels. Uluwatu is one of the island’s most luxurious destinations. Clifftop resorts with private beaches have earned this area the nickname Billionaire’s Row. The Bulgari Resort, Bali is the perfect example. With expansive views of the Indian Ocean and a private beach accessible only via elevator, this clifftop resort is the pinnacle of luxury in Bali. But it will set you back a cool $1,000 a night!

If like most of us, your budget doesn’t stretch so far, there is affordable accommodation nearby. The Sun and Surf stay, right on Bingin Beach is a great find for beachheads and surfers. Meanwhile for backpackers on a budget, there are ample hostels, many of which have their own swimming pools. Bali Beats Guest House and Uluwatu Backpackers are our faves. All in all, Uluwatu has a good range of accommodation, ranging from high-end, to affordable.

What Uluwatu has in luxury, Canggu has in laid-back, low-key vibes: think boutique hotels, low-rise villas and eco resorts. A yoga hotspot, you’ll find multiple retreats in this part of Bali. Ecosfera is a great stay for traditional Balinese hospitality, as well as daily yoga classes. Canggu has a strong backpacker scene, meaning you’ll find plenty of high quality hostels in this part of the island. Dip and Doze Hostel is a popular choice due to its superb location just 800 yards from Berawa Beach. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s COMO Uma Canggu. A recent addition to the area, this 5* hotel is one of the only luxury resorts in Canggu. It boasts one of Bali’s best spas. 

So, which of our chosen destinations comes out on top accommodation-wise, Uluwatu or Canggu? Ultimately, the answer comes down to the vibe you prefer. Are you going to Bali for its world-class luxury? If so, Uluwatu is probably the destination for you. But if you’re after something a bit more laidback, bohemian, and cheaper, Canggu’s your spot.

Uluwatu or Canggu: Price

Bali made its name as a budget-friendly destination, but the recent explosion of tourism to the island has somewhat hiked prices up. This doesn’t mean it’s not possible to have a cheap holiday in Bali – it all depends on the types of places you decide to visit. So Uluwatu or Canggu, which destination stands out in terms of affordability? 

Considering Uluwatu’s aforementioned nickname – Billionaire’s Row – you might be able to answer this question for yourself. Uluwatu has a reputation as one of the island’s most premium spots. According to an analysis by Champion Traveler , an average week in Uluwatu as a solo traveler sets you back between $1,101 and $2,989, factoring in food, accommodation, entertainment and flights.

A number of factors contribute to Uluwatu’s higher price tag. Besides its tendency for luxury accommodation, there are also lots of Western-style restaurants in this area, with much higher prices than you can expect at your more traditional, Balinese joints. In order to get around Uluwatu’s many different beaches and clifftop locations, most people hire a scooter, which is another expense to consider when visiting Uluwatu.

Canggu, on the other hand, is slightly more affordable. Its reputation as a backpacking hub has given rise to accommodation and restaurants catering towards lower budgets. Champion Traveler predicts that an average week in Canggu will cost you between $782 and $2,665 as a solo traveler. Of course, this is all very dependent on where you stay, which restaurants you go to, and how much you spend on entertainment. But in either Uluwatu or Canggu, if you eat at local Balinese places, opt for villas instead of resorts, and spend your days on the beach, you should keep things fairly cheap. 

Uluwatu or Canggu: Food

Bali has a rich and varied culinary tradition that draws influence from many different parts of the world, including China, India, Malaysia and Australia. Classic Indonesian cuisine appears alongside Western-inspired fare in the island’s many cafes, bars and restaurants. It’s also a great culinary destination for vegans and vegetarians, who are spoilt for choice with the island’s vast selection of plant-powered kitchens.

The beaches and clifftops of Uluwatu are awash with great places to eat. You’ll find an ample selection of cafes, serving up everything from brightly-colored Buddha bowls to tacos and Indonesian classics like Nasi Goreng. Campur Campur, in the heart of Uluwatu, is an inexpensive spot for some seriously delicious local cuisine. Bukit Café’s vibrant, meat-free menu satisfies even the most devoted of carnivores, while the tacos at Mango Tree are an absolute must. As you would expect, there are also a good few high-end, fine dining spots in Uluwatu housed in the area’s luxury resorts. 

There’s a fair amount of overlap between the two destinations’ food scenes. A few of Uluwatu’s restaurants, such as The Loft, even have sister restaurants in Canggu. Due to Canggu’s popularity with expats, there’s a fair amount of international cuisine to be found in this part of Bali. From Pho at Leroy’s Vietnamese, to pizza in Milk and Madu, you can eat your way around the world in Canggu. Be sure to stop at The Give Cafe, where all profits go to charity. 

 So Uluwatu or Canggu, which destination takes the biscuit when it comes to eating out? As far as we’re concerned, it’s even stevens. Both destinations boast a rich variety of different cuisines.

Uluwatu or Canggu: Activities

Before the billionaires arrived, Uluwatu first became popular for its extraordinary surf breaks. As such, people come to this part of the island mainly for the beach – and there are many to choose from. Bingin Beach and Dreamland Beach are two of the tourist hot spots, but if you’re a bit more adventurous, there are plenty of more private stretches of sand to explore in Uluwatu. If you can brave the trek down to the sea, Nunggalan Beach offers vast stretches of white sand. There’s also the remains of a shipwreck wedged into the sand, which makes for a great pic! 

Aside from surfing and beach-hopping, there are a few interesting cultural sights in Uluwatu. Uluwatu temple is the main attraction of this variety. This stunning cliff-top temple is over 1,000 years old, and is a great place to spot monkeys. Uluwatu is also home to Single Fin, one of Bali’s legendary beach clubs . Tourists and residents alike flock here at dusk to sip cocktails and listen to live music on the venue’s ocean-view balcony. 

If you’re easily bored of beaches, there’s plenty to do in Canggu besides sunbathing and surfing. The ancient Hindu shrine of Tanah Lot is a particular highlight. Perched on a rocky outcrop, the temple offers brilliant views of the Indian Ocean, and a chance to learn about the cultural heritage of Bali.

For fans of more recent culture, why not take a tour of Canggu’s vibrantly decorated streets? There’s plenty of interesting street art to discover. You’ll also find yoga classes, cookery workshops and plenty of independent boutiques in this vibrant part of the island. If it’s a toss-up between Uluwatu and Canggu when it comes to things to do, we’d say Canggu has the edge. If you’ve come to Bali for an action-packed holiday, we’d point you in the direction of Canggu.

Uluwatu or Canggu: Beaches

Long hailed as one of the best-surfing destinations in the world, it goes without saying that Uluwatu is home to many impressive beaches. From vast stretches of white sand to hidden coves, you could spend a week just exploring the many different seaside spots this part of Bali has to offer. As we’ve already mentioned, Dreamland and Bingin Beach are the tourist favorites.

However, don’t just settle for these. It’s well worth getting away from the crowds and exploring the likes of Pemutih Beach, Thomas Beach and Suluban Beach. Pristine sand, rugged rock formations, and crystal clear waters are what make the beaches of Uluwatu special. It’s worth noting that, due to Uluwatu’s cliff-top location, a lot of Uluwatu’s beaches are accessible only via narrow and steep stairways. The beaches are therefore not the most accessible for those who might have difficulty climbing and descending stairs.

There are five kilometers of coastline to explore in Canggu, with five main beaches. Each one offers something a little different. Surfers will find the best break at the popular Berawa Beach, while Nelayan Beach is the best for swimming . If you’re less concerned about swimming, and more partial to a beach cocktail, Echo Beach has the best range of beachside bars and restaurants. There’s a hidden temple at the end of Batu Bolong Beach, while you’ll find a lovely, secluded zone at the north end of Pererenan Beach.

So are the beaches better in Uluwatu or Canggu? Providing you’re able to manage all the steps, we’d say that Uluwatu has the edge here. It’s the rugged, wilderness of the landscape, combined with the unspoiled and secluded nature of its beaches that truly makes Uluwatu’s coastline so spectacular.  

Uluwatu or Canggu: Where is better to visit?

So all in all, Uluwatu or Canggu? Where’s the better destination to visit in Bali? It really depends on what type of traveler you are and what you’re hoping to experience in Bali.

If your idea of the perfect holiday is one split between luxury accommodation and secluded beaches, you’ll probably prefer Uluwatu. Similarly, if you’re seeking out world-leading surf, head to Uluwatu. But if your perfect trip involves interspersing beach days with sightseeing and cultural activities, we’d say you’ll love Canggu. However, Canggu is only a 40-minute taxi journey from Uluwatu. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t visit both!
