We’re going to the Manu Biosphere Reserve, in the province of Madre de Dios. There is a single road, mostly unpaved, that connects Cusco to Manu. The Manu Biosphere has 2 parts: the Cultural / Buffer Zone and the Reserved Zone. The Cultural Zone has more relaxed rules regarding human impact. The Reserve Zone is more of an adventure but there’s more of a chance of seeing special animals like caiman and jaguars. Manu is remote and has less human impact than other places in the jungle. It’s a true gem.

Real talk: you will spend a lot of time traveling. But the scenery is incredible.

The jungle has 2 seasons: rainy season and dry season.  Rainy season is from December to March, and the dry season is from April to November. We only operate tours during the dry season. However, this is the rainforest, so it can rain at any time of year.

You can expect temperatures ranging from 15 degrees at night and about 30 degrees during the day. Under the jungle canopy, it feels a bit cooler.

The Manu Biosphere is a wild zone for animals. Any animals we see will be living their normal lives in their natural habitat. Therefore, it’s hard to guarantee any particular species.

Everyone on the travel team, including the chef and drivers, will be looking for animals along the way, and we encourage all travelers to do so as well. The more eyes searching, the more chance of seeing creatures.

The members of the travel team are all trained in basic first aid, and we travel with a basic first aid kit. Along the way, there are “medical posts” in many towns. These posts are clinics that provide daily care for local residents. In the event of an emergency, we will need to return to Cusco.

There is no cell signal deep in the jungle, and there is wifi available in the town of Nuevo Eden, but it is not 100% reliable. We encourage you to consider yourself “off the grid” for the duration of your jungle trip.

For emergency communication, we have a Garmin InReach satellite device for sending texts or calling for emergency help when off the grid.

For the year 2021, we will only operate tours with single groups. We welcome couples, families, and groups of friends. We welcome groups of up to six people but they must be a single group of family members or friends who are traveling together.

The guided tours include everything you’ll need for the duration of the tour. However, there will be opportunities to stop at local shops along the way to buy other things. Also, the members of the travel team will really appreciate any tips at the end of the tour.  Try to bring small bills!

Absolutely. Our guided tours are appropriate for children who can walk for a while without any help, and are curious about the world around them. For younger children, a stay at our Jungle Bungalow may be a better fit as your daily schedule will be more customized.  Our family in the jungle has many children who will love to share their knowledge of the jungle with other kids.

Yes. Every guided tour does involve a lot of walking, but the walking is slow and quiet so as to not disturb the animals. You’ll also have to climb in and out of the boat.

Although the jungle has dangerous animals and such, your tour guide knows the jungle very well and will be on the lookout for anything dangerous. If you’re scared of snakes or tarantulas and would prefer NOT to look for them, just let your guide know

There is some form of electricity at each lodge. The clay lick platform and campsites won’t have electricity.

We will travel with large bottles of purified water that will be used both for drinking and for preparing food. The chef is versatile and can easily prepare meals that suit your personal desires. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, no problem! Just let us know.  The chef will incorporate local, fresh products into meals as possible as well.

Yes. Each day of the tour (except the 6-day tours) there will be the possibility of stopping at a small store. Pharmacies are available on the first, second, and last day of each tour.

Manu National Park 3D-2N Tour

It truly was a trip of a lifetime, although there were some hiccups along the way, it doesn't distract from what we've taken away from the entire experience. Our tour guide Serro, was well versed and knowledgeable of the wildlife around us and the culture of the indigenous peoples. There was nothing this man could not do, a sailor, cook, and photographer. THe man deserves a raise! The only issues we faced were major construction on the main roads thus shutting them down for hours at end, costing valuable time. As well as no access to electricity to charge devices (mobile or medical electronic devices) which wasn't specified. We weren't able to complete our part of our tour due to flight arrangements but even so, I don't feel cheated from the experience. I would highly reccommend, I had an amazzing experience.

3 Days Amazon Tours

Manu Park Unveiled: A 3-Day Exploration of Biodiversity

Join us on the ultimate 3-day Manu Jungle Tour, specially designed to accommodate the time constraints that travelers often face when visiting Peru. As a country brimming with endless tourist attractions, we understand the need for an immersive and captivating experience that showcases the best of what Peru has to offer.

Our experienced local guides have meticulously crafted this tour to optimize your chances of observing wildlife as we journey from the Andes to the Amazon. With its unparalleled beauty and abundant biodiversity, the Manu Jungle Tour is undoubtedly one of the most recommended and sought-after adventures for nature enthusiasts.

Embark on this unforgettable journey, and let us whisk you away to the heart of the Peruvian rainforest for a truly remarkable experience that will leave you in awe.

Overland Transportation

Manu region has regular access by overland transportation from Cusco City. For our guided tours we use comfortable vehicles such as the Mercedez Sprinter or Toyota KD minivans for groups that exceed 3 participants. In effect, the Toyota Fortuner  SUV 4×4 will be arranged for couples or small groups of 3 participants.

The Experience “Andes to Amazon Rainforest”

This Journey offers incredible views of cascades, waterfalls, and stunning surrounding landscapes. As a result, encounter some of the best views and diverse environments. Densely populated, the cloud forest is home to epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, lichens, and more. The evidence of plant diversity here is so grand at these elevations.

Wildlife in the Cloud Forest.

Our 3-day Amazon Tours offers a great chance to observe the Wooly monkeys that hang about the cloud forest. Looking up you will see and definitely hear the colorful birds; Quetzal, Mountain Toucans, and the unmistakable Cock of the Rock. These brightly-colored birds are seen at certain spots, but not to worry. For the reason that our guides and drivers know these very well.

River Transportation

Certainly a memorable experience, we provide motorized canoe boats to travel down the river with experienced native drivers, (canoe type of 14 meters long – 2 meters wide). The boat has a roof to prevent any sudden rain and sunshine. Life jackets are provided, and medical first aid kits. We embark from the Atalaya Port & Town, to travel downstream for somewhat 2 hours. Reaching the vicinity of Machuwasy Lagoon at elevations below 500 meters above sea level.

The activities 3 Days Amazon Tours

Caves at guadalupe lodge..

We offer exclusive excursions to the caves/canyons at Guadalupe Lodge. The caves are only a 10-minute walk from Lodge. Originated by creek erosion, the canyon is a natural formation. This area has cut into the mountain, and as a result has created an environment that harbors species that evolved in the darkness: bats, tailless whip scorpions.  Also, taking a walk during the nighttime would be an especially amazing opportunity to look for the: dwarf caimans and the Water Opossum, which is the only species of aquatic opossum in the Neotropical. If you are afraid of being too close to these creatures at night time, this activity is optional. Advisable to wear water boots.

The Boat Trip – Full Day

Our Tour offers even more, including a most noteworthy day of boat navigation along the Madre de Dios river. A view of the evergreen rainforest adorned by colorful trees blooms on the slopes of the mountains or the foothill forests.

The Boat trip begins from the Atalaya River Port. A motorized canoe-like embarkation (12 meters long and 2 meters wide with a roof to prevent any sudden rain or sunshine).

These types of boats are the most ideal for fast-flowing rivers. Even relaxing a little, while just floating along the cascades. The chances are also high to observe aquatic birds along the shores, dwelling in the reeds, not to mention, the strange-looking capybaras.

Exploring the Machuwasy Oxbow Lake.

We arrange private transportation to the lake’s trailhead. Trails go along riverine forests densely populated by fig trees, bamboo, cecropias, and heliconias. While exploring these trails, look out for the squirrels and Dusky Titi monkeys.

Machuwasy is a small oxbow lake. It attracts a large number of Amazonian birds such as egrets, hoatzins, herons, kingfishers, rails, crakes, horned screamers, caciques, oropendolas, caymans, capybaras, and giant river otters.

The lake sits on an elevation of around 500 meters, so this makes it the first oxbow lake along the Manu route and probably the most visited by tourists who travel into the Manu Cultural Zone.

Visitors of the lake sign in to enter the area, (and the cost is covered by the operator). One great experience here, which you don’t want to undoubtedly miss. Is boating on the lake itself, another mode of transport. Above all, you will get the chance to choose one of the rafts! Made from trunks of balsa wood tree tied in line. The boats are moved by a long stick, so you’re in charge, Good luck navigating. Take a seat and start moving. (There’s no roof on top so it is advisable to take a wide hat or cap).

Hoatzin Kingdom

The Hoatzin Kingdom is exactly what it says on the tin. These bizarre “ Hoatzin ” birds that you will see around this Kingdom can be seen in large flocks. Quite a tolerant animal, and for that reason, these birds can be observed at close range. Even more, you can easily get clear and bright pictures of them while exploring this beautiful lagoon in Manu.

Recommendations

The access trail can be muddy during the wet season or high water period which begins from November to May. We provide rubber boots to our clients (under 45 European Standard available ) Wearing wellies is recommended for all our guests. The forest interior can be wet and slippery for regular shoes. Even in the dry season. Our guides will advise you on any information you require. As well as giving you the best insight and knowledge while spending your time in the wilderness.

Nature Walks

Walks to explore the different types of forests will be offered by your guide on certain days. (According to your itinerary, physical conditions and weather alike). First of all, the walks take place during the morning and afternoon. Hence these are peak times to witness wildlife activity. Guides will keep you updated with weather conditions and suitable clothing that will be necessary before each walk. The walks usually last a couple of hours, and as a result, can be set up between mealtimes.

Which lodge will be used?

The 2 nights of the tour will be spent at Guadalupe Lodge , which is situated in a secluded forest. One of the best locations to get immersed in nature. Also allowing time to relax in the jungle and enjoy the commodities of your cabins. This is an experience you will not forget, here at Guadalupe Lodge.

Which are the extra activities?

River tubing at atalaya (alto madre de dios river).

If you’re seeking adventure, rafting down the Madre de Die River is it. This fast-flowing river is a great way to travel through and enjoy the Amazon. As well as the stunning embankments thriving with greenery and birds.

This activity is optional and costs $ 20.00 per person (it can be set and paid on the day of the tour) the activity lasts around 2 hours, and all the safety gear will be provided

Biking at Guadalupe.

We rent bikes at the Guadalupe Lodge where you can easily explore the road. These are safe, gravel roads with not much motor vehicle traffic. The cost is $ 20.00 per bike the activity lasts around 2 hours, There is a section of healthy forest that can be explored by bikes and gives the additional chances to observe some wildlife along the roads; monkeys, peccaries, macaws, etc. This activity can be booked along the trip even on short notice.

It was a magical ride, guided by Ricardo :) We were super impressed by Ricardo’s fun positive attitude while he was explaining us all these amazing facts about the biodiverse paradise of Manu! I definitely recommend this trip for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time and still wants to have a taste of the Amazon. I hope to return for a much longer trip, deeper into the jungle 🦋

The trip surpassed my expectations! We were both glad we went. Edwin did a great job as our guide. My favorite part was when he told us stories about his experiences in the jungle and times with crazy tourists over dinner. He had us all laughing. He also was really good at spotting animals.

Edwin was a very attentive guide and showed us lots of wildlife. Manu was so different from Cusco and the Salkantay trek that we had just got back from.

Loved our time! Such amazing tour guides Isaul and Caesar, they were so passionate about the jungle and excited to share with us. We had so much fun and such a great experience, definitely a highlight on our trip to Peru!

Me and my friend chose to do the Short trip - 3 days in Manu National Park. How can you not go into the Amazon when you're in South America and this was our perfect tour. We got collected from our hostel on the morning by Edwin and driver and they stayed with us the whole trip. Edwin was our guide and he was fabulous - he had great energy and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

This was a great experience. Esau was extremely knowledgeable and took every opportunity to show us everything he could, maximizing the time and place. His enthusiasm for birds, monkeys, frogs, snakes, and spiders maintained a sense of fun and adventure. Thankfully we had plenty to see and explore, day and night. The food offered us unique tastes of the region, as the lodge offered a great place to shower and sleep.

A friend and I did the 3-Day Manu Jungle Tour from Cusco. It was an experience I must say! The highlights are as follows: - Herbert's, our Wild Watch guide, knowledge, and love for nature were admirable, this included his ability to talk to monkeys - which resulted in him encouraging capuchins over to a tree near us on the last day so we had a clear view of them! So amazing! - Every day the food, cooked by Gloria, was fantastic! I have dietary requirements which she catered to seamlessly.

I'd like to thank Edwin for his attention, knowledge and friendliness! A person whom pleasure to communicate with. Of course, 3 day tour is a bit short to immerse yourself in jungle, but it's a fine option for ones who are short of time. And od course I should mention cousine at Guadalupe Lodge. To cut a long story short, that was a fine and balanced trip, after which you won't be exhausted :)

My friend and I had an incredible experience doing the Manu short 3 day park tour with Edwin Patel. The long journey was kept interesting with lots of food breaks and stops to see birds, where Edwin’s experience and knowledge spotted birds we never would have seen alone. He also made us feel safe and welcome on all the walks and we also enjoyed his company throughout.

This three day safari was wonderful. It's a long coach ride into Manu Park, but the scenery is beautiful and the guides stop whenever there are birds or other animals to spot. Our guide, Juan, was very knowledgeable and was keen to share his passion for the natural world. His enthusiasm was infectious and the fact he clearly loved his job so dearly made it nothing but a joy for us. The accommodation is comfortable and the food was great. We saw lots of monkeys and birds. Spiders and bats in the cave and on the way back went to a hummingbird sanctuary, which blew my mind. These creatures are just magical. We met a group that did the 5 day tour, which we didn't have time to do, but it sounded like they had a very adventurous trip indeed. Worth considering if you have the time to do so.

26 May, 2023

This was overall a great trip, we saw lots of animals such as birds, a Capybara, etc. The tour guide also put in a lot of effort. The food and accommodation are ok, it's what you expect from somewhere remote. The opportunity to see the amazon, take a hike, and see animals that made things worth it. You should note its a 7 hr trip to and from Cusco.

Seeing monkeys in the wild for the first time was incredible. Easu and Luis were our guides, very knowledgeable and passionate about the area and animals. The drivers were very experienced and safe. Stopped at the site of Inka funeral towers, and the beautiful town of Paucartambo. Day 2, riverboat ride, jungle walk, and raft trip looking for Cayman, but they were hiding. Saw beautiful birds, ants, and ant holes termite nests. The Hummingbird sanctuary was beautiful, and unexpectedly there was a snake under the decking. Sunset by the river with beautiful birds. Luis' bird and monkey imitations were phenomenal. Day 3, easily walk upriver to caves, bats, and huge spiders. Guadeloupe Lodge was very comfortable, the cooks prepared excellent food and Manuel also helped to make our stay enjoyable. Our son was on crutches and Luis was very thoughtful, adapting the itinerary slightly so he could join in. We were very pleased to support Wildwatchperu in their ethical environmental work and strongly recommend them. Thank you to you all for a trip of a lifetime.

This experience was incredible. The drivers, staff, and guides are all incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. You get an authentic experience in Manu and the lodging / food is great as well. We saw a variety of animals / birds via the river boat, cloud forest, and rainforest exploration. We only did a 3 day trip but definitely recommend the 6 day experience if you have time for it. Herbert was really hospitable and shared a lot about Peruvian culture with us. Jose Luis (Pepe) was a great guide and shared a lot of interesting details about nature / Peru with us. Could not recommend more!

This was fantastic experience. The owner, Hebert, is committed to conservation and is very knowledgeable about the Amazon region as he grew up there. He went above and beyond to give us a great experience in Peru. The guides, ours was Jose Luis, are very passionate about wildlife and are excellent at leading you through dense jungle and providing a truly adventurous experience. Highly highly recommend!

We had booked the 3 day short trip. Although it’s quite a bit travelling, I found it well worth it. I just like the jungle and this time most of what we saw was lots of greens, followed by birds. Unfortunately not that many animals, we did spot some nightmonkeys, bats but mostly birds. The stay at the Guadeloupe lodge was nice and Hebert is a cool and nice guide. Very kind, helpful and knowledgeable!

Awesome Manu Short Trip 3D thanks to expert organizer Fredy and awesome tour guides Hebert, and Simon and Juan Jose, and the drivers and cooks! This is THE tour company to use for the best experience! They handled everything for us from the moment we arrived at the airport until we departed. Guadalupe Lodge and food were great-what a unique experience exploring the Amazon rainforest in hikes, boat ride, birdwatching, watching a sloth and monkeys at the Wildlife Rescue Center, and sleeping in the screened-in lodge cabin with the sound of the river and the birds. The people were friendly, experienced, knowledgeable; they took great care of us (long ride to the lodge but many waterfalls to enjoy on the way). A short time in Manu but a wonderful experience and memories :)

My friends and I did the Manu Short Trip with Wild Watch Peru and had an interesting experience to say the least. Three days & 2 nights. The rainforest itself was beautiful and we did get to see a lot of gorgeous, brightly colored birds, different types of monkeys, cool plants & trees. Our guide, Simon, was really passionate about the jungle and had an eagle's eye & ear for finding wildlife for us to see.

I always knew Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and the Andes would be spectacular destinations, but adding Wild Watch Peru’s 3-day Manu Short Trip turned our nine-day Peru vacation into an adventure of a lifetime. From Hebert’s first email answering questions about the rain forest tour to our guide Ricardo’s sincere goodbye at the trip’s end, everyone at the company was thoughtful, professional, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Wild Watch Peru set quite high expectations in terms of advertising comfort and sights; I can attest the roomy and comfortable transport (on land and water!), cozy lodge, delicious meals (including picnics!), beautiful scenery, and remarkable birdwatching are just a few details that exceeded our expectations.

Our guide "Edwin" and transport picked us up from our hostel in Cusco early in the morning and drove us along the mountains and some Inca ruins, thumbs along the way for nice photo taking. He also recommended us to the very famous and tasty coffee at a Local restaurant in Paucamtambo Village where we visited the colonial bridge! He is very friendly and knowledgeable, with a good command of English, and he shared many interesting stories from the jungle with us! We are so grateful to Luis for adding such great memories to our visit and making the booking hassle-free and simple. He is an absolute expert, trustworthy, prompt in answering questions, and professional. I enthusiastically recommend giving him a call and booking one of his many outstanding tours!

What factors to look when choosing a Cusco to Jungle tour in Peru

cusco jungle tour

Machu Travel Peru wrote this article especially for those who love to be in contact with nature and dare to embark on wild adventures. A Cusco Jungle tour sounds exciting to you? We already believe it.

The Machu Picchu tours are often at the top of a traveler’s wish list. However, lots of visitors don’t know that Cusco is not only the gateway of Machu Picchu but also the starting point of the most unique jungle tours and awe-inspiring experiences. Indeed, there are thousands of reasons to venture into the jungle… In other words, Peru is the hub of not only ancient Inca history but also mind-blowing adventures.

Peru is an unparalleled and stunning paradise blessed with one of the greatest biodiversity in the world. Did you know 60% of Peru is made up of jungle? Yes, exactly as you read it. A Cusco Jungle tour will allow you to deeply immerse in the heart of our vast and breathtaking Amazon which is steeped with tons of exotic wildlife and beautiful landscapes.

Besides, the Peruvian Amazon is inhabited by native communities that live in harmony with the marvelous nature and also still keep alive their ancestral traditions. Without a doubt, your Cusco Jungle tour will not only be adventurous and experiential but also an educational and culturally-rich tour.

So, are you ready to live the most incredible Cusco Jungle tour of your life? Let’s get the party started!

Fascinating journey: Cusco Jungle tour

Needless to say, to guarantee a fulfilling and unforgettable jungle tour, it has to be accompanied by preparation. It will allow you to tailor your trip to suit the experience you are looking for.

Fortunately, the vast and fascinating Amazonian territory offers a wide range of destinations to choose from. These places are surrounded by unbeatable natural beauty where you will be able to feel like another marvel of nature. Unquestionably, ideal places to feel the magic of our Earth.

Wildlife spotting

cusco jungle tour gallito de las rocas

To discover all the wonders of the jungle and its fascinating inhabitants, you must head to the remote parks and reserves of the Amazon . Due to the ruthless human activity, the Peruvian Government created these heavily protected biospheres.

Now that you know this, you may be asking yourself how much does it cost, right? Well, the reserve entrance fee is not cheap. But don’t be discouraged. We know that maybe the Machu Picchu cost was high since there were many factors -tickets, transportation, treks- that played into the total cost. But a Cusco Jungle tour is definitely worth it. The Amazon reserves are well equipped for keen wildlife spotters.

Moreover, there are great platforms for viewing the forest canopy and about 50 km. of hiking trails. Your night excursions will be awesome!

Biodiversity hotspot: Tambopata National Reserve

cusco jungle tour tambopata

One of the main attraction areas of Amazon is the city of Puerto Maldonado where the Tambopata National Reserve takes place. This reserve is one of the most unparalleled, significant, impressive and flourishing reserves of the Peruvian Amazon.

With an extension of over 247, 690 hectares, this geographically and well-preserved complex area counts with an incredibly high level of biodiversity where you will witness a breathtaking scenery of wildlife.

Tambopata stands out due to its variety and richness of birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, insects, caimans, and even monkeys. Besides, it counts with different types of trees and lakes. There is no doubt that not only the Tambopata National Reserve but the whole Amazon is a dream paradise for nature lovers and adventurous souls.

Furthermore, Puerto Maldonado is not only home of this incredible biodiversity hotspot but also has the official title of “Capital of Biodiversity of Peru” due to the abundance of flora and fauna found in its forest. For this reason, many enthusiastic travelers book a Jungle tour from Cusco.

How to get to Puerto Maldonado from Cusco?

You have two options, by plane or by bus . The first one is the most convenient option to go to Puerto Maldonado. The flight takes less than 1 h. Once you arrive, you can take a motorcycle taxi (almost like a tuk-tuk) to the city center (the Main Square). The bus is the most popular and economical option ($20 approx.) for travelers on a low budget. The ride takes about 12 hrs. but it is worth it since you will pass through beautiful Andean highlands, cloud forest, and epic jungle. The bus station is about 10 minutes from the main square.

What can you do in Tambopata during your Cusco Jungle tour?

cusco jungle tour lake sandoval

While traveling around this reserve, you will have a great chance to explore deep in the Amazon and enjoy different activities such as canopy, jungle walks, and fishing . Besides, we recommend visiting these natural beauty places: Sandoval Lake, Huitoto Lagoon, Apu Victor Lagoon, Cocha Perdida and Butterfly Tambopata.

The summer in Puerto Maldonado is very hot, wet and short. The winter is also hot, short but cloudy and oppressive throughout the year. During the year, the temperature varies from 18° to 32° C, and hardly ever drops below 13° C or rises above 36° C.

According to the tourism score, the best time to visit this city is from May to September since the days are clear and without rain.

Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu – The Ultimate Adventure Experience

Author Image

The Inca Jungle trek to Machu Picchu is by far the most adventurous trekking option in the Cusco region. It is also the most varied in terms of activities.

In addition to jungle trekking, there's a downhill mountain biking section, white water rafting and zip-lining. The tour finishes on a high with a visit to Machu Picchu .

I completed the Inca jungle trek with  Skyhook , and it was AMAZEBALLS (see the video below)!

Inca Jungle Trek - The Basics

How long is the inca jungle trail.

Most trekking companies offer the Inca Jungle trek on a 4D/3N itinerary, although it is possible to complete the trek on a 3D/2N itinerary.

See more on the 3D/2N itinerary below.

The total trekking distance on the Inca Jungle Trail is approximately 50 km / 31 miles. This distance ultimately depends on the tour company and routes you take. The walking is split over three days with Day 2 being the longest distance (10-22 km / 6.21-13.7 miles with around 6 hours of hiking).

inca jungle trail rafting

Book your Inca Jungle trek with Skyhook

What activities can you do on the inca jungle trek.

Other than trekking through the jungle, the stand-out activity of the Inca Jungle Trek is mountain biking. On day one, you will be cycling over two hours for 65 km / 40 miles down Malaga pass.

The possibility of white water rafting is another popular feature of this trek, which is greatly dependent on the season and river conditions.

Most river rafting tours are on fairly easy Grade II-III rapids, but some companies have the option for more challenging, Grade IV rapids.

Finally, you will have the option to include zip-lining and/or visiting hot springs in your adventure. Zip lining costs around $40 per person for 3-5 cables. Visits to hot springs cost $25 per person for the entrance fee plus transport costs.

Where Do You Sleep On The Inca Jungle Trail?

Accommodation on the Inca jungle trek is usually in a hostel or home-stays. Hostels in the towns along the way are generally very basic but there are a few nice options.

In general, you will have access to electricity and running water (even if it is not always hot). On the last night, you will stay in a hotel in Aguas Calientes .

If you're staying elsewhere, there are also other accommodation options available:

  • Best hotel stays in Cusco
  • Luxury hotels in Cusco
  • Excellent accommodation in the Sacred Valley

All-inclusive and high-end tours offer much nicer accommodation with private rooms and quality meals.

Different companies partner with different accommodations. It is worth reading trip-advisor reviews online to see what travellers have to say about tour operators’ accommodation choices.

Inca Jungle Route Options and Maps

The Inca Jungle trek is usually completed on a 4 Day / 3 Night itinerary. The itinerary set out below is the most common, with subtle variations from tour company to tour company.

Inca Jungle Trek Variations

The 3 Day / 2 Night itinerary skips the trekking option between Santa Maria and Santa Teresa on day 2. Instead, car transport takes trekkers directly to Santa Teresa for zip-lining before continuing to Aguas Calientes.

Day 1: Cusco – Abra Malaga Pass – Santa Maria

The Inca Jungle trek starts with a 3-4-hour drive to the top of the impressive Abra Malaga Pass (4,316m / 14,160 ft).

Most tour operators will either pick you up at your hotel in Cusco, or you will be asked to meet at the offices of the tour agency for collection. Departure times vary, but you will usually be on the road by 07:00.

The drive heads north out of Cusco (3,400m / 11,155 ft) and passes through the town of Chinchero before dropping into the Sacred Valley, where you can engage in some fun activities during your trip . Here, you will get your first glimpses of the Cordillera Urubamba, be prepared to be impressed.

You will cross the Urubamba River into the town of the same name and continue onwards to Ollantaytambo (2,792m / 9,160 ft). Some tour operators stop here for breakfast. After eating, you will continue onwards and upwards along a very windy road to the top of the Abra Malaga Pass.

The Abra Malaga Pass is the highest point on the trek (4,316m / 14,160ft) and provides incredible vistas down into the highlands (see pics below).

mount-veronica-inca-trail-trek

Mount Veronica (5680m / 18635ft). Veronica is the highest peak in the Cordillera Urubamba range. Its Quechua name is Wakay Willca, which means “Sacred Tears”. This image was taken from the other side of the Sacred Valley, near Abra Malaga Pass

You will disembark at the top of the pass to gear up for one of the most exciting bike rides of your life. The route from the top of Malaga Pass to the final destination is all downhill. A jaw-dropping 4,316m (14,160ft) to 1,196m (3,924 ft) descent – and just under 60km (37.3 miles) in distance. Most people take 4-5 hours to cycle this section.

The ride is not very strenuous though. You can free-wheel most of the way and will use the brakes more than the pedals. However, the many bends in the road can make it a little dangerous, so please take care.

The windy route has multiple blind corners. Cars on the route are few and far between (thankfully) but drive like maniacs!

Make sure your tour company provides high visibility vests, reliable mountain bikes, and protective gear. A full-cover helmet is essential and you should be offered body gear too. The latter might be overkill for some people, but it’s better to play it safe.

A nice touch to these bike rides is that a backup vehicle usually drives in front of you. If you get tired or wish to stop, you can jump in the car.

Please Note: Back-up vehicles are not available with all tour companies. Cheaper tours may not include this option.

You will stop to have lunch en route and arrive at Santa Maria (1,196m / 3,924 ft) mid-to-late afternoon. If there is time and the season is right (typically October-April), you can go river rafting.

River rafting is an optional extra offered by some tour operators and is sometimes charged separately. The cost is around US$50 per person.

Please Note:  Visibility is sometimes very poor on the Abra Malaga Pass. If there is heavy fog, your tour company will likely cancel the cycling excursion. Instead, you will drive directly to Santa Maria.

After your cycling tour, you will spend the night in Santa Maria. Your stay is usually organized with a local hostel, so don’t arrive with any expectations of luxury.

Santa Maria

Day 2: Santa Maria – Santa Teresa

Wake up in Santa Maria for an early breakfast. The second day is a relatively big trekking day in terms of distance (~15 km / 9.3 miles), but all at low-altitude.

The trek begins with a steep and strenuous climb that gradually flattens, before continuing through a number of undulating trails, one of which is an authentic Incan trail.

The scenery is lush with vegetation as you are in fact in the jungle region of Cusco. Remember to wear insect repellent, and look out for nasty little sand flies that leave itchy, red bites that can last for weeks.

On the trail, you will see coca, coffee, and various fruit tree plantations – everything grows in the jungle! After lunch and 6-7 hours of trekking, you will reach Cocalmayo, which is known for its hot springs.

Most trekkers stop here for a dip, so do remember to have your bathing suit at hand (see our packing list below). From the hot springs, the walk to your hostel at Santa Teresa (1,550m / 3,773 ft) is only 30 minutes.

Day 3: Santa Teresa – Hydroelectric Station – Aguas Calientes

On day 3, adrenaline junkies can try their hand at zip-lining.

The zip-lining option is sometimes included as an optional extra on tour packages. Make sure you check if zip-lining is included in your tour price when you make your booking.

zipline

If it is an optional extra, the cost is around US$40 and includes transport to the zip-lines with 3-5 cable slides, the highest of which is 150m / 492 ft above the ground. Here’s a YouTube video from a previous trekker on his thrilling ziplining exploits.

After zip-lining, you will continue trekking for 2-3 hours to the Hidroeléctrica station. From Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes, it is a 2-3 hour walk along the railway. If you are tired, you can catch a train to Aguas Calientes from the Hydroelectric station, which takes approximately 45 minutes and costs ~US$25.

If you opt out of zip-lining, you will start this trek first thing in the morning. You may also have to wait in Santa Teresa until zip-liners in your tour group have finished their airborne excursion.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Day 4 usually starts with an early wake-up call from your hotel reception. This is to ensure you catch one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu. Buses start running at 05:30. It is a 30-minute ride to Machu Picchu, which opens at 06:00.

If you are trekking during the peak season (May-September), expect the queue for buses to start before 05:00. If you decide to get up early, it is likely because you are keen to see the sunrise from the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This famous doorway is a good 40–60-minute walk up a gradual slope from the Citadel and well worth an early rising.

After arriving at Machu Picchu early (super early if you went for sunrise), you will then be given a 2–3-hour tour of the Citadel. These tours are typically arranged by your tour company. You will also get plenty of offers from tour guides situated outside the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Learn about Machu Picchu: See our epic Machu Picchu facts article.

Certified guides will have a card around their necks. Prices vary depending on the number of visitors in your group, so don’t be afraid to negotiate a little. Expect to pay around 40-50 Soles per person if there are 2 or more of you, and 80-100 Soles if it is just you.

After the Citadel tour of Machu Picchu, it is well worth hiking Huayna Picchu if you still have the energy and are not afraid of heights. The climb is steep and strenuous and takes the average trekker about an hour to reach the summit.

The views from the top are awesome and well worth the effort though. There are only 400 climbing permits a day, so you need to book early.

The view of Machu Picchu from Huayna Picchu (aka Wayna Picchu or Wayna Pikchu).

After visiting Machu Picchu, you will need to get a bus back to Aguas Calientes in time for your train journey to Ollantaytambo. Most tour operators organise your train ticket and provide a bus or private car to transport you from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.

If you are not using a tour company and are on a tight budget, it is possible to get a bus from the Hidroeléctrica Station to Cusco. This is a much longer route (7-8 hours).

See our article on how to get to and back from Machu Picchu here .

Inca Jungle Trek Altitude and Route Maps

Below is the altitude profile for the Inca jungle trek. The highest point is the Abra Malaga Pass (4,350m / 14,271 ft). From here, there are several checkpoints which lead hikers and tourists to Machu Picchu (2,430m / 7,972 ft) and finally the return trip to Cusco (3,399m / 11,151 ft).

Inca Jungle trek Altitude

For more details on these various checkpoints, our handy Inca Jungle trek map below illustrates the route from Cusco, through the Sacred Valley, and then onto Abra Malaga. From here, trekkers can cycle to Santa Maria and then trek on foot to Aguas Calientes via Santa Teresa.

Should I Do The Inca Jungle Trail?

The trek naturally appeals to adventurous types who like thrilling adrenaline-filled experiences. Booking the Jungle Trail through a tour company allows you to do multiple activities in a few short days.

If you are looking for a pure Andean trekking experience and enjoy camping, then this trek is not for you. It is also not going to be fun for people who don't enjoy mountain biking or are afraid of heights.

Here are some alternatives:

  • Alternative treks to Machu Picchu
  • Classic Inca Trail (or conversely, the 4-day Inca Trek or Short 2-Day Inca Trail )
  • Salkantay trek
  • Tours of Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake

See all Machu Picchu routes .

Best Time for an Inca Jungle Trek

There are two main seasons in the subtropical Peruvian Andes:

  • A dry season - May through to September
  • A wet season - October to April

The Inca Jungle trek can be completed all year round. However, heavy rains during January and February often lead to landslides, which often affect the trail and road that connects Santa Maria with Santa Teresa. Because of this, the Inca Jungle trek is often closed between January and February.

The best time to do an Inca Jungle trek is either during the dry season or in the dry season shoulder months of March / April and October / November. The latter shoulder months are particularly good if you are keen to do some river rafting in Santa Maria.

The trail is busier during the dry season. That said, it never reaches the capacity of the Inca Trail, so you can still enjoy this amazing trek minus the usual crowds.

Temperatures are fairly consistent all year round, with warm days reaching temperatures of 20°C (68°F) and higher. The nights and early mornings are cold (with temperatures often decreasing to 0°C / 32°F and lower). In the dry season, temperatures sometimes drop below 0°C / 32°F too.

You will want to bring trekking clothing that you can layer up or down. Daily temperatures fluctuate and your body will heat up quickly when you’re active. See the packing list below for details on layering.

Finally, microclimates are the dominant weather force in the Andes. Make sure to bring some wet weather gear, like a basic poncho. It is possible to encounter rain at any time of the year.

For interesting historical weather charts of Machu Picchu, check out this article . Feel free to also check out our guide on Inca Trail temperatures  for more general weather conditions along the trail.

Can I Get Altitude Sickness on the Inca Jungle Trail?

The Inca Jungle trail is technically a high-altitude trek. In reality, the amount of time you spend at altitude is very short.

The highest altitude you will reach is Abra Malaga Pass at just over 4,300m / 14,108 ft. From this point, you will descend relatively quickly while cycling. You will end the day at a rather low altitude for the Andes, just under 1,200m / 3,937 ft.

For the rest of the tour, the trail undulates but never goes higher than 2,000m / 6,562 ft. Machu Picchu itself sits at 2,430m / 7,972 ft, which is still relatively low.

This means that altitude sickness on the Inca Jungle trail is rare. It’s nowhere near as prevalent as some of the other trails in this region where trekkers spend good portions of time hiking over 4,000m / 13,123 ft passes.

You are in fact at greater risk of succumbing to altitude sickness symptoms before you start the trek. Most visitors to Machu Picchu first fly into Cusco, which is situated at a high altitude of over 3,400m / 11,155 ft.

Experiencing mild altitude sickness, like a headache or nausea, is common for visitors in Cusco. It is important that you spend a few days acclimatising at this altitude before going any higher.

Another good option, if you have the time, is to immediately descend from Cusco into the Sacred Valley, which is a good 1,000m / 3,281 ft lower. You can rest here for a few days before returning to Cusco to join your Inca Jungle trek tour group.

We have written a detailed guide on acclimatization and altitude sickness which we recommend you take a moment to read.

Looking for a day tour? Here are my 5 favourite day tours around Cusco:

Inca Jungle Trek Packing List

The packing list for an Inca Jungle trek is very similar to that of the Inca Trail trek. We have written a very detailed guide on the required gear for an Inca trail trek, and we suggest you use this as a template for the Inca Jungle trail.

The key difference for the Inca Jungle trek is that you will not be camping. You won’t need a sleeping bag or thermal mat as blankets will be provided at the hostels in Santa Maria and Santa Teresa.

See more on our recommended Packing List .

How Fit Do You Need to Be for The Inca Jungle Trek?

The Inca Jungle Trek is a diverse adventure with many different activities - trekking, cycling, white-water rafting, and zip lining. The trek is definitely better suited for the young-at-heart adventure seeker.

The mountain bike ride is all downhill which means even less experienced cyclists can manage this trek. The total hiking distance for this trip is 49km / 30 miles over three days. A lot of this trek is over flat terrain with no high-altitude passes.

In conclusion, some fitness is helpful but there’s no need to overdo it in preparation. If you are not already partaking in some form of exercise regime, you can check out our  Machu Picchu trek training program .

Costs of Inca Jungle Trek

Over the last few years, the number of trekking companies offering the Inca Jungle trek has increased significantly.

Some operators have great offers, use fantastic cycling equipment and provide a brilliant service overall. However, as the route is not regulated, there are a few sharks in the market to watch out for. These guys offer cheap tours that definitely cut corners (hopefully not ones on Abra Malaga Pass!).

Prices for the Inca Jungle trek range from US$250 per person with the cheapest operators to US$700 per person with the best operators. Overall, it’s a good idea to budget between $400-$600 for a typical Inca Jungle Trek tour.

Inca Jungle Treks usually include:

  • Transport throughout the trek.
  • Hostels on the trek and a night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes.
  • Cycling equipment.
  • River rafting guides and equipment (not always included).
  • Machu Picchu entrance ticket.
  • The train or car journey back to Cusco after the tour.

The following are usually excluded from your Inca Jungle Trek Price:

  • Zip-lining ($40)
  • Bus to Machu Picchu ($24)
  • Hot Springs ($50)
  • Climbing Huayna Picchu / Machu Picchu Mountain ($25)

Alternatively, it is possible to get an all-inclusive tour. Prices for an all-inclusive tour range from US$1,000-US$1,500. This would include two nights in a hotel in Cusco to acclimatise and airport transfers.

This is in addition to all the features of the best tours set out above. Plus, you will spend a further night in Cusco after the trek.

Please Note:  The best trek operators will have much better equipment, service, accommodation, and guides. So, it’s a better idea to choose a reputable tour operator with good services and who compensates their support staff (office admin, guides, porters and chefs) well.

Trekking Insurance For The Inca Jungle Trek

Insurance for your trek to Machu Picchu is a must since most operators will require you to carry sufficient travel insurance for your trek.

Make sure that the insurer you choose covers mountain biking and white-water rafting. I have reviewed a number of travel insurance providers and the most affordable and best by far is World Nomads .

Use the Calculator below to get a travel insurance quote for your trek.

I hope you have found this article on the Inca Jungle trek useful. If you still have any questions or would like to provide some feedback, please leave a comment below. We would love to hear from you and will usually respond within 24 hours.

Best activities in cusco – inca jungle trek, talletusmenetelmät suomalaisilla kasinosivustoilla.
