KSRTC is all set to switch to smart options with the introduction of Smart Travel Cards in Kerala. With this, the ticket sale inside the bus will transition to the digital method. Two lakh smart cards have been arranged for this purpose. During the first phase, the travel cards will be given to the passengers travelling in Thiruvananthapuram city buses.
Apart from the 400 cards being used on an experimental basis, 5000 cards will be distributed soon. The passengers in city circular, city shuttle and city radial buses can avail this opportunity. This will later be implemented in other buses including superfast buses. Smart cards will also be introduced in other districts soon. The cards are made using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
Once the distribution of ticket machines is completed, there won’t be much delay in card distribution. The software in the ticket machines has to be updated to use the cards. This process is ongoing. Though the travel cards introduced in 2017 were a success, they had to be retrieved after a year due to technical issues. The new cards will be introduced after fixing these issues.
What is a Smart Travel Card?
It is a card that can be used for paying travel fares by recharging it beforehand. The cards can be recharged on buses and in stations.
To know the balance
When taking a ticket using the card, the balance amount on the card will be printed on the receipt. The balance can also be checked on the ticket machine with the help of the conductor.
No fee for card
The card will be distributed to people free of cost. Tickets can be taken for the entire amount recharged. For those who recharge the Smart Travel Card for Rs 100, journey worth Rs 150 is allowed. Recharge can be done for up to Rs 2000. Those who recharge for above Rs 250 will get a 10 per cent discount. The recharge validity is for a year. If not used within that period, the card will have to be activated again.
Anyone can use
There is no condition that the owner himself/herself has to use the card. The card can be used by friends or family of an individual.

Complete Details of the 'Shakti' Scheme: Free Bus Travel for Women in Karnataka
After the announcement of five 'guarantees' by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah , the government has released detailed guidelines for the 'Shakti' scheme, which ensures free bus travel for women within the state. Here is all you need to know about the scheme, including eligible buses, application process for Shakti smart cards , and required documents for availing free bus travel.
What is the 'Shakti' Scheme?
The 'Shakti' scheme was a promise made by the Congress party in its manifesto during the Karnataka Assembly elections. It guarantees free bus travel for women in the state. After assuming office, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah gave in-principle approval for the scheme, along with four other guarantees. The Karnataka cabinet officially announced the implementation of the 'Shakti' scheme on June 11.
Who is Eligible?
All women residents of Karnataka, including students, are eligible for the 'Shakti' scheme. Additionally, members of the transgender community can also benefit from this scheme.
'Shakti' Smart Card for Women
Women can apply for the 'Shakti' smart card online through the website Sevesindhu.karnataka.gov.in within the next three months. However, the government has not specified when the issuance of these cards will begin. In the meantime, women can use photo identity cards issued by the state or central government with residential addresses. Aadhaar cards are also accepted for free travel starting from June 11.
Availing the Free Bus Travel Scheme
Until the 'Shakti' smart cards are issued, women can show photo identity cards with residential addresses, including Aadhaar cards, to conductors while traveling on buses to avail the free travel benefit.
Buses Covered under the 'Shakti' Scheme
The 'Shakti' scheme will be implemented in all four transport corporations in the state, namely Karnataka State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transportation Corporation (BMTC), NorthWest Road Transportation Corporation (NWRTC), and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transportation Corporation (KKRTC). The scheme applies to buses operated by these corporations within the state, including Meghdoot buses.
Buses Excluded from the 'Shakti' Scheme
The 'Shakti' scheme does not apply to buses traveling outside the state, luxury buses, sleeper buses (both AC and non-AC), Vayu Vajra, Ambari, Airavat, Flybus, and EV Power Plus (AC) buses.
50% Seats Reserved for Men
In buses where the 'Shakti' scheme is applicable, the government has mandated that 50% of the seats be reserved for men.
Government Reimbursement to Transport Corporations
Conductors have been instructed to issue 'zero' fare tickets to women for their journey from the start point to the destination. Based on the distance traveled the government will reimburse the amount to the respective transport corporations.
With the 'Shakti' scheme, the Karnataka government aims to promote women's safety and empower them with the convenience of free bus travel within the state.

Travel in KSRTC without change but with smart cards
As part of the initiative to offer a comfortable journey to passengers, KSRTC has introduced smart cards. Passengers can now travel in KSRTC buses by using smart cards which can be purchased beforehand. The corporation will utilise GPRS-enabled ticket machines to implement the system. By introducting a system prevalent in foreign counties, the corporation intends to attract passengers.
The card can be purchased for Rs 10. Passengers can recharge the card for any amount by giving money to the conductor or through online banking. Instead of giving money to the conductor after boarding the bus, the card should be handed over to the conducter. When the card is swiped on the ticket machine, the corporation will get the ticket amount. The smart cards will be made in the format of ATM cards. The new system will also solve the shortage of loose change during bus journeys.
By procuring a card and recharging it, passengers can travel in KSRTC ordinary buses to Scania. Presently, the KSRTC is issuing passes to regular passengers. However, there are many shortcomings. Passengers are able to travel for a specific time period only in the same route using the pre-paid pass. In contrast, passengers can travel in any route using the smart cards.
Keltron has been entrusted for the implementation of the smart card system. Though the project was announced two years ago, it was not implemented. The authorities hope that the project can be introduced within two months.
The new system is part of the initiative to attract passengers for getting more revenue for KSRTC. The corporation has envisioned several projects in the last one year for increasing revenue.
The ATM facility at KSRTC depots which was inaugurated the other day, courier facility through KSRTC buses, mobile towers above depot buildings and coffee vending machines at depots are part of the initiative to increase revenue.

Payment of ticket fares to go digital in KSRTC buses
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will introduce digital payments for tickets starting in January. Passengers can pay the ticket fare on the bus by using travel, credit, and debit cards, as well as through Google Pay and QR codes. This arrangement aims to address issues such as the need to provide balance amounts to passengers and the necessity to keep an adequate amount of change. Digital tickets will be issued to passengers on their mobile phones.
A contract has been signed with a private company named "Chalo App" to implement the project. The bus tracking feature in the app will enable passengers to ascertain the current location of a bus. Android ticket machines equipped with these features will be used on buses.
The KSRTC is required to pay 13 paise to Chalo App for each ticket issued. The app also possesses data analysis capabilities, allowing authorities to identify crowded buses. The app will also provide the KSRTC with precise data on season ticket sales and free passes. A trial run of the facility is scheduled to be conducted by the end of December. Several road transport corporations, including the one in Mumbai, have already launched ticketing services through Chalo App.
