Company report, post-covid earnings recovery continues apace for flight centre.

A wave of covid-19-induced damages has been inflicted on Flight Centre since March 2020. Restrictions on travel and border control, grounding of airline capacity, and strict lockdown measures on consumers created an unprecedented squeeze on the group. However, the measures to execute a drastic reduction in costs (cuts to store network/leases, staff, marketing), combined with the AUD 697 million equity capital raising in April 2020 and the subsequent recovery in travel activities, have stabilized the no-moat-rated group. And recovery to prepandemic level of earnings is on track.

A strong balance sheet allows Flight Centre to take advantage of weakness in the economic cycle via opportunistic acquisitions or increasing market share via investment in marketing initiatives. It also enables the development of new products to more effectively address specific market segments.

Flight Centre Travel Group Limited is a travel retailer and corporate travel manager. The Company's principal activities include travel retailing in both the leisure and corporate travel sectors, plus in-destination travel experience businesses including tour operations, hotel management, destination management companies (DMCs) and wholesaling. Its segments include Leisure, Corporate, and Other. The Leisure segment combines the retail store front and online brands for retail customers, luxury travel brands Travel Associates and Scott Dunn, independent agents and complementary offerings. The Corporate segment includes the FCM brand, Corporate Traveller and other Corporate customer brands. The Other segment includes Brisbane-based and other support businesses, including Supply, that support the global network and also include travel management services which incorporates touring, ground-handling and hotels. Its brands include Flight Centre, Aunt Betty, ignite, and Scott Dunn.

Australian online auto classifieds firm Carsales.com Ltd said on Wednesday it was seeking to raise A$500 million ($329.40 million) to buy an extra 40% stake in Brazil-based automotive digital marketplace Webmotors SA.

Australian shares slipped on Monday, as losses in the banking and healthcare sectors offset gains made by energy and mining firms, while travel stocks gained as the country geared up to reopen its borders to vaccinated tourists later in the month.

Australia shares jumped 2% on the first trading day of the year on Tuesday, notching their best intraday session in 15 months, as a surge in commodity prices lifted heavyweight energy and mining sectors.
