What to Do In Sekinchan: 12 Best Things to Do in Sekinchan, Malaysia

1. check out amazing sekinchan paddy fields.

Sekinchan-Day-Trip-Rice-Paddies

Though Sekinchan is a fishing village, it is a lot more famous for its beautiful stretches of rice paddies . These rice paddies dominate the landscapes of Sekinchan, and it is probably the best thing to do in Sekinchan.

Visiting the Sekinchan rice paddy fields is a must if you come from a stressful city such as Kuala Lumpur as they remind you of the simpler days. Watch the rice plants flow freely in the wind, listen to the sounds of the birds, and feel your worries dissipate from your body.

Similar to the rice paddies in  Bali  or Vietnam, they are very picturesque. Blue skies, tall rice plants, and a beautiful flower dress, you have yourself the perfect Instagram photo! Sekinchan is unquestionably one of the most beautiful places in Malaysia!

2. Visit Kuala Selangor For Fireflies and Sky Mirror

If you have more than one day in Sekinchan, consider visiting the neighboring town Kuala Selangor . Kuala Selangor is a small seaside town similar to Sekinchan, but it has two of the top attractions in Malaysia: Fireflies and  Sky Mirror .

Experiencing the fireflies is one of the best things to do in Sekinchan at night, especially since the town doesn’t really have a nightlife.

However, because seeing the fireflies is a night activity, it might be difficult to participate if you are on a day trip to Sekinchan. If you can afford to spend more than 1 day in Sekinchan, seeing the fireflies is a must.

Numerous colonies of fireflies roam freely in the mangroves of Kuala Selangor. With the pitch darkness, the flickering of their lights is like stars in the sky!

Any travelers looking for a unique dining establishment must not miss  N16 Cafe  in Sekinchan. Also known as the Sekinchan Bus Cafe, the entire establishment is situated in an old school bus that has been renovated it to become a cafe.

The food is decent but the most promising feature is the spectacular view of the paddy fields nearby. Sip on a cup of home-brewed coffee, have a slice of delicious cake, and enjoy the stunning visuals inside and outside the bus cafe!

The cafe is built on top of a freight container that acts as the kitchen. There is free parking nearby and the famous accommodation Padi Box is right next door. If you are staying in Padi Box (which is what we did), you surely cannot miss the N16 Cafe.

N16 Cafe has air conditioning, making it the perfect place to relax after a visit to the other Sekinchan attractions nearby, especially in the summer.

4. Make a Wish At The Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Wishing-Tree-Sekinchan

Located on Pantai Redang (Beach Redang), the  Sekinchan Wishing Tree  is one of the best places to visit in Sekinchan.

As you approach the wishing tree, you will see the numerous red ribbons hanging off the tree. These ribbons are written with wishes from other visitors.

To get your own ribbon, you must make a donation at the adjacent temple. Each red ribbon is tied to an ancient Chinese coin . When tossing your ribbon on the tree, try to get it as high as possible. Legend says that the higher the ribbon lands, the most likely your wish is going to come true!

Don’t forget to keep your wish a secret!

5. Chill At Pantai Redang Beach, The Iconic Sekinchan Beach

Pantai-Redang-Beach-Sekinchan-trip

If you are already at the Sekinchan Wishing Tree, then Pantai Redang (or Redang Beach) is literally right at your doorstep. Though the quality of this Sekinchan beach cannot compare to those of Langkawi, Pantai Redang still attracts plenty of people on the weekends and holidays.

If you are traveling with family in Malaysia, Pantai Redang is the perfect place to bring your kids. They can spend hours running up and down the soft sands, observing kite flyers, and swimming in the cold soothing water .

It is impossible to not love the beach in the hot and humid weather of Malaysia!

If you have time, grab a coconut, have some seafood nearby, and wait for the breathtaking sunset to unfold in front of your eyes!

6. Wander Around The Sekinchan Fishing Village

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Though Sekinchan is famous for its rice paddies, the village itself is meant to be a fishing village .

When you are not taking photos at the rice paddies, stroll around the old streets of Sekinchan. You will encounter numerous seafood restaurants and vendors selling various types of dried seafood.

Not only do you get to see the final products, but you can also see the different types of equipment and ship that fishermen use. If you are from a big city, then the contrast of a small fishing village will be quite interesting.

7. Stuff Yourself With Some Fresh Sekinchan Seafood

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

One of the many pros of a fishing village is the accessibility to fresh and delicious seafood . Sekinchan is no exception.

The fishing village is populated with many high-quality seafood restaurants at affordable prices. If you are from the western parts of the world, chances are you have never encountered some of those kinds of seafood.

Dishes such as oyster omelet, mantis shrimp, and shark meat are all popular local cuisine. If you are feeling adventurous, make sure you give those a try!

There are many amazing seafood restaurants in Sekinchan to try some delicious local dishes, here are the ones we recommend:

  • Loong Hua Restaurant – Arguably the most famous restaurant in Sekinchan
  • Weng Kee Seafood Restaurant – Highly rated and affordable
  • Seafood D’bendang – A fancier restaurant, but the food is very good.

8. Learn About Rice Harvesting At The Paddy Gallery

Paddy-Gallery Sekinchan

Besides admiring the lush paddies, one of the best activities in Sekinchan is to learn about the entire rice-making process from start to finish.

The  Paddy Gallery  is an active rice-processing facility as well as a museum featuring exhibits on harvesting and more. Visitors will learn each and every step of the process from the rice paddies to the rice grains we see in the supermarkets.

On the ground floor of the establishment are shops where visitors can purchase souvenirs, snacks, and even rice produced there! On the first floor is the informational museum, where the entrance fee is 5 RM.

It is worth the low price for so much information. Rice might be simple on the surface, but the procedure to get it down to the grains is scientific and interesting!

They have recently added a rice market to the establishment, so visitors can purchase any rice-related souvenirs and products there.

The Paddy Gallery is located in the middle of the paddy fields, offering unparalleled views of the lush surroundings. However, it is quite a trek to arrive. I recommend either renting a bicycle or driving there!

Don’t miss it, it is arguably the most famous Sekinchan tourist spot!

9. Indulge In Fresh Mango Smoothies At Mango King

Mango-King-Sekinchan

Located on the outskirts of town is one of the best things to do in Sekinchan, especially if you have a sweet tooth.  Mango King  is a small stall located in the midst of the paddy fields, just down the road from the Paddy Gallery.

Here you will find the freshest and sweetest mangoes and mango smoothies in Sekinchan . If there is anything I learned from backpacking Malaysia, it is that nothing beats a refreshing mango smoothie or slushie in the hot Malaysian sun.

After trying their mango specialties, you may want to purchase those seriously addicting mangoes! Thank God they are so affordable!

Mango King also sells snacks and other kinds of beverages, but we found them to be not as tasty.

💪 Pro Tip: If you come early in the day, you can try one of the mango smoothies with passion fruit. They are one of the best-sellers and are often sold out!

10. Go Back In Time At Ah Ma House (Grandma’s House)

Ah-Ma-House-Sekinchan-place to visit

Ah Ma House  is a unique attraction in Sekinchan showing the rich history of the region.

Featuring a conglomerate of old things such as film cameras, the Game Boy, the refrigerator-sized TVs , and other items that are before my time, stepping into Ah Ma House is like stepping into a time machine .

If I had taken my parents there, they would’ve enjoyed the trip down memory lane tremendously. For me, I was only able to recognize a few of the items. Even then, a sense of nostalgia rushed over me as I stood in awe in the traditional Chinese house.

Besides the antique items and cool historic house , Ah Ma House is known for its homemade cookies and crackers . Those snacks brought back some childhood memories for me. Don’t hesitate to try them when you get the chance!

Across from Ah Ma House is another attraction called the Kampung Atuk (or Grandpa’s House). Though it was closed when we visited, it had empty stands with displays selling traditional snacks. It must be a popular spot in Sekinchan on the weekends or holidays!

11. Rent a Bicycle And Ride Around Town

Sekinchan-Bicycle-Rental

Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to explore Sekinchan and the paddy fields around it. If you are in Sekinchan without any type of transportation (car or motorcycle), a bicycle will allow you to visit some of the places outside of town.

Luckily for you, there are a few bicycle rental shops in Sekinchan . The most reliable of which is the  AMG Bicycle Renting Sekinchan .

Featuring anything from a single-person bike to a family bike (4 persons), AMG Bicycle Renting Sekinchan has a bicycle for any type of traveler. If you are too lazy to paddle, they also have electronic bikes for a higher price!

Be careful if you plan on riding a bicycle in Sekinchan. There is no such thing as a bike lane in Sekinchan!

12. Enjoy MSekin Wonderland Waterpark

MSekin-Wonderland-Waterpark-sekinchan

If you are visiting Sekinchan with kids, then you’ll want to visit, MSekin Wonderland, the first children’s water park in the town.

The park has approximately 10 pools for a variety of water activities, making it perfect for a family. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline-filled or relaxing time in MSekin Wonderland, you’ll find it!

The waterpark is conveniently situated next to Sekinchan’s beach, so you can combine a sunset watching at the beach with it!

Where To Eat In Sekinchan?

Oyster-Pancake

If you are visiting Sekinchan, your tummy is going to thank you. Because of its location near the sea and paddy fields, visitors have access to some of the freshest ingredients you can possibly get.

Plus a mix of influence from the Chinese and Malays, you have yourself some of the best foods you can find in Malaysia. Here are some of the restaurants we recommend in Sekinchan:

  • N16 Bus Cafe – As mentioned above, this cafe offers beautiful views of the rice paddies in Sekinchan
  • Loong Hua Restaurant – One of the seafood restaurants in Sekinchan that serves delicious seafood at affordable prices. It is highly recommended by locals!
  • Eighty Eight Kopitiam – A great and cheap place for breakfast and lunch, Eighty Eight Kopitiam serves a wide variety of porridge and noodles.
  • Seafood D’bendang – This restaurant is situated on the outskirts of the town, but their seafood is some of the best you can find. However, expect to pay quite a hefty price! The ambiance is also very modern and clean!

Where To Stay In Sekinchan, Malaysia

Best Unique Hotel In Sekinchan –  Padi Box

Padi-Box-Sekinchan-container hotel

If there is another thing Sekinchan is famous for, it’s the freight container hotel and homestays. If you are used to staying in 5-star hotels and think this is outrageous, let me convince you otherwise.

The most famous container hotel in Sekinchan is  Padi Box . Using recycled freight containers as building structures, this eco-friendly accommodation is not only stylish but strangely comfortable.

The decor of the hotel is adorable, and there are plenty of open areas to get some sun and admire at the rice paddies. It has the amenities of a standard hotel but in a generally fun and relaxing atmosphere.

If you are traveling to Sekinchan as a pair or couple, make sure you check out the Padi Box standard 2-person room or the 2-person room with a private balcony, perfect for Instagram photos!

Best Container Hotel in Sekinchan – Villa Chee

Sekincan Container Hotel

Padi Box isn’t the only container hotel in Sekinchan. Meet Villa Chee.

Though we did not get a chance to stay at Villa Chee (wink wink if you are reading this Villa Chee), we CANNOT not include this in our Sekinchan guide.

Similar to Padi Box, Villa Chee is located in the middle of the gorgeous paddy fields, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the elements. What separates this from Padi Box is that Villa Chee has a swimming pool, an outdoor restaurant, and relaxing outdoor spaces where guests can just chill out.

It has a wooden walkway that juts out into the paddy fields, perfect for photos or just getting a closer look at the rice fields without having to step in the soil, which is often wet.

This property is situated on the outskirts of Sekinchan, which means you’ll need to have a car. But worry not, there is plenty of parking on site.

Is A Sekinchan Day Trip Enough?

Sekinchan-things-to-do

One of the most common questions I get asked about Sekinchan is “ Is a Sekinchan one day trip enough? ” The answer is: Probably yes.

Sekinchan is beautiful but it is a small fishing village after all. One day in Sekinchan is plenty to see the main Sekinchan attractions .

If you are visiting Sekinchan, chances are you will have your own car or motorcycle . Having your own transportation allows you to easily jump from one Sekinchan attraction to another. Taxi-hailing apps such as Grab can be unreliable in a small town like Sekinchan.

A popular option for traveling in town is by bicycle. There are bicycle rental companies in town with various types of bikes for rent!

Though if you want to enjoy some of the nearby attractions in Kuala Selangor such as the fireflies and  Sky Mirror , you might want to consider staying in Sekinchan for 2 days. A weekend in Sekinchan is the ideal amount of time to explore and relax in this beautiful seaside town with stunning rice paddies!

If you are going from KL to Sekinchan, check out our special Sekinchan day tour with Sky Mirror!

How To Get To Sekinchan?

Sekinchan-Featured

Sekinchan is a small fishing village located in the Sabak Bernam District of Selangor , about 100 kilometers away from  Kuala Lumpur . The most convenient option to visit Sekinchan is by renting a car in Kuala Lumpur and taking the 1.5-hour drive .

Though there is public transportation that goes from Kuala Lumpur to Sekinchan, the route requires many stops and a longer time (~2 to 2.5 hours). If you want to do a Sekinchan day trip, it is highly recommended to drive from Kuala Lumpur.

If you insist on taking a bus from KL to Sekinchan, head over to  Pudu Sentral  (Puduraya) and catch the SPT to Teluk Intan . The bus will pass by Sekinchan where you can disembark.

Well done for a quite in depths description n informative blog. Just wondering if the Padibox is comfy for a group of 7, or better to get a high rise condo stay. And how to know whether the Paddy field hv been harvested or still green?

The biggest room they have in Padi Box is for 6 people, so a group of 7 would need to split 2 rooms. We recommend to check beforehand (send a message or call the hotel/homestay) and ask about the conditions of the paddy fields.

sekinchan food and hotel too pricey …. we found very nice place …. go Muar, Johor… much better ….. nice and peaceful …. nice people

Hi Sean, I’d like to ask by which transportation you went to Sekinchan? I wonder if the bus route which you mention in your blog can disembark nearby Padi box? Since there’s barely any Grab to take around the village.

We took the SPT from Pudu Sentral but got off at Kuala Selangor to stay a night. If we stayed on the SPT, that would’ve taken us to Sekinchan. We aren’t sure if you can make a stop at Padi Box, but we have seen people get on and off throughout the journey (not at bus stops). So if we have to say, yes, you should be able to get the driver to drop you off near Padi Box.

Nan-Tian-Temple

Sekinchan is widely known for fishing and farming. And most people of this area live on these two occupations. So it is important for them to pray for a good harvest and calm ocean as both industries are highly weather dependent.

For this reason, you will notice many temples and churches here and there at Sekinchan. And these temples have spectacular architecture and design, which is worthwhile to visit. Nan Tian Gong is one of the leading Chinese temples in Sekinchan, and it is situated at Site A. The temple is also known as Nine Emperors God Temple . It has great religious importance and, at the same time, offers a fascinating view to its visitors.

The temple has two towers in front of it, and both of them will give you excellent views of the paddy fields.  And if you can make your trip in May or November, you can admire the full bloom of rice fields.

4. Learn Swiftlet Farming

Swiftlet Farming

To learn about Swiftlet farming , first, you need to know what Swiftlet is? And why is it important to harvest?

Well, in the ancient days, birdnest soup was considered a luxurious and healthy food by the Chinese emperors. It was also called the Emperor’s soup, and the soup was only served to the elite group in China. But the birdnest was very rare as it could only be harvested in caves.

Nowadays, people have invented a new technique to harvest birdnest, which is called “ Swiftlet farming “. And instead of caves, they breed Swiftlet in the houses, which imitate the environment of caves. As a result, birdnest farming is cleaner than before.

In Sekinchan, you will get to see more than 350 Swiftlet houses . These Swiftlet houses are purposefully built in the middle of rice fields as rice attracts birds to come here and breed in these houses.

Though Swiftlet farming is commercial, it entertains tourists by teaching them about farming and Swiftlet breeding.

5. Eagle Feeding

Eagle Feeding

You may have fed fish and even pigeons, but have you ever fed eagles? The recreational activity can sound a bit eccentric, but it sure gives you a huge amount of fun and excitement.

The Eagle Feeding will start with a boat trip from Pasir Penambang to the estuary of Selangor River . A guide will accompany the visitors. After that, you’ll be passing a mangrove forest, and from there, you’ll be taken to a small cave.

After what would seem like an eternity, you’ll finally find yourself surrounded by a crowd of eagles. They’ll start circling you, and all of it will seem like an exquisite dance. It is right then that the guide will tell to slowly start tossing the chicken entrails to the river. It is an outstanding sight to see when the eagles start eating.

From nibbling the chicken entrails to screeching and swooping down the water -these eagles will do anything to be fed.

Eagle Feeding is a really amusing activity. It gives you a jolly good laugh once you see them eating.

Guess what! Ah Ma House , which literally means Grandma’s house, is a special attraction in Sekinchan that will take you back to your childhood days. Here you’ll see many antique collections like furniture, old-fashioned TVs, film cameras, clocks, rotary phones, and so on.

Basically, everything that represents the old-time and used to be in grandma’s home, you can have here. And the best part of this memory lane trip is that it has a bakery shop that sells homemade cookies and crackers.

Msekin-wonderland

You probably thought that the rural Sekinchan would never have an amusement park. Well, you’re wrong about that. Sekinchan never fails to amaze you with its entertainment. MSekin Wonderland is a wonderful amusement park in Sekinchan that has gained a ton amount of visitors ever since it opened.

It has a spectacular waterpark that serves as the main attraction for the park. The waterpark has 10 different pools and slides, and fountains each of them. Because of the waterpark’s incredible activities, most visitors show a keen interest in indulging themselves straight in the waterpark.

Fees: Adults RM25.00 | Children RM20.00

8. Bagan Fishing Village

Bagan Fishing-Village

On your day trip itinerary, you can include admiring the calm and busy Fishing Village as your afternoon activity. Sekinchan fishing village is as much renewed as its paddy fields.

After dining at N16 Cafe , we head down to Bagan, which is the main fishing village of this area. Now let me tell you why I called it the “ calm and busy Fishing Village “.

The village remains calm and quiet when all the fishers head down to their daily activity catching fish in the morning. It seems like it is an empty village.

And it gets too busy when all fishermen come back from their work and unload their catches. But trust me, both scenarios are elegant and beautiful at their own purpose.

Apart from this, you can have a taste of fresh seafood at any nearby seafood restaurant. And here, you’ll get countless seafood restaurants that offer delicious dishes.

9. Redang Beach

Redang-Beach

Although Redang Beach isn’t exactly well-known due to its lack of thrilling activities, it sure does have tons of calming and fun ones. The beach gained more recognition after the famous Hong Kong TVB shot scenes for their show “Outbound Love”.

Sekinchan’s main attraction is the Sekinchan Wishing Tree . Visitors come here and make a wish by tying a red ribbon with coins around the tree. Other than the wishing tree, the beach encourages activities such as kite flying and playing with soap bubbles . These activities can be enjoyed by both children and adults. And if you’re someone who’s not into activities, you can lie down and bask under the sun.

10. Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Sekinchan-Wishing-Tree

I have already mentioned above in the Redang Beach section that the Sekinchan Wishing Tree is the main attraction in Sekinchan. Now let me drive you a bit deeper and tell you how it works and how you can make wishes.

The old wishing tree is loaded with thousands of red ribbons representing people’s wishes. After arriving here, not making a wish is quite irresistible.

All you need to do to make a wish is bring a red ribbon from the adjacent temple in exchange for a small donation. Each of these ribbons is tied with an ancient Chinese coin which gives an elegant and traditional look to these ribbons.

Then you just have to write your wish on that ribbon and throw it up as high as possible to the tree. It is believed that the higher your ribbon goes, the more your wish is going to come true!

Opening hours: Daily 24 hours

11. Hiking at Bukit Melawati

Bukit-Melawati

We’re talking about activities, and you thought we were going to forget about hiking? Nah. Not happening! If there’s any activity that can lighten up your mood, that’s hiking. And hiking at Sekinchan’s Bukit Melawati is something that you shouldn’t skip at all. The hill overlooks at the breezy straits of Malacca. The view is so scenic that it captivates your mind.

Although the top view may be breathtaking, the hike itself takes a ton amount of hard work. The hiking trail is more of a topsy turvy asphalt curve than a proper trail. The rough trail may be the only hard thing about the hiking trip, but while you’re hiking, you can catch a glimpse of some wonderful views.

And when you’ve finally reached the top, make sure to click some amazing pictures and stick them on your scrapbook for all the incredible activities that you’ve done.

12. Watch Fireflies

KualaSelangorFirefliesNightTourwithSeafoodDinnerandBoatTrip

If you’re not done being amazed by Sekinchan’s tranquil beauty, hold your breath as there’s more to see and be captivated. After you’re done indulging yourself in various activities in the day, there’s one more activity that you can enjoy at night-time, and that is a fireflies boat tour .

You can see fireflies in Sekinchan at nighttime. It’s one of the most breathtaking experiences you’ll have at Sekinchan. There’s a gazillion of fireflies that fly in the enchanting mangroves of Kuala Selangor . It’ll be pitch dark, and the flicker of the lights from the fireflies will look absolutely stunning.

A guide will be with you throughout your tour to the forest. If you want the memory to stay alive, you may want to record it as well.

Pro tip: Take a mosquito repellant spray with you.

Food You Can Try During Your Sekinchan Day Trip

Dine @ n16 cafe.

N16CAFE

Surrounded by the lush greenery of Sekinchan, N16 is a quirky cafe that’ll does not fail to stun you. The cafe was established using an old school bus. What’s even more bizarre is that it is built on top of a freight container that serves as a kitchen for the cafe.

The food, no doubt, is scrumptious, but the view from the bus is to die for. The cafe has all the facilities to make you feel comfortable- AC, comfy chairs, the calm breeze. You name it.

You can visit the cafe and enjoy their delicacies but also spend some time taking pictures with the paddy fields in the background.

Location: F4V7+7V, Kampung Parit Empat, 45400 Tanjong Karang, Selangor

Opening hours: Friday-Monday 11:30 am to 07:00 pm

Try Mangoes @ Mango King

Mango King

When you’re done with cycling and visiting Paddy Gallery , refresh yourself with an ice-cold mango smoothie at Mango King . It is located in the middle of the rice fields and is widely famous for its huge mangoes.

As Mango King is situated just down the road from the Paddy Gallery, we have included it in our day trip itinerary. And we’re grateful that we paid a visit to this place and have tried its refreshing mango smoothie. Because in the Malaysian heat, that smoothie is such a great relief.

You can even purchase these fresh and sweet mangoes as souvenirs.

Location: 248, Lorong Empat, 45400 Sekinchan

Opening hours: Daily 09:00 am to 06:00 pm

Taste the Fresh Seafood

Pulau-Ketam-Seafood

Sekinchan is a fishing village, so you will see seafood restaurants everywhere in this area. It is pretty obvious that you won’t leave Sekinchan, especially the fishing village Bagan , without trying the fresh and delicious seafood.

Here you’ll find both Halal and non-Halal seafood restaurants that sell popular seafood dishes like Oyster Omelet, Siakap Bakar (grilled fish), Mantis Shrimp, Crab with oyster sauce , and so on.

Refresh Yourself with Coconut Shake @ Sekinchan Coconut Farm

Coconut shake e1672551352832

After a hot day trip in Sekinchan, you undoubtedly need a relaxing refreshment. That’s what we also feel on our day trip. Then we opt for Sekinchan Coconut Farm .

This coconut farm will not only give you the fragrant coconut drink but also refresh you with its lush coconut trees. After a long day trip in the Malaysian heat, coming to this coconut farm felt like heaven to us.

Here you can also have many delicious snacks like coconut pudding, coconut cookies, prawn crackers, coconut candy, chicken fry, and so on. Note that this farm is only open for visitors on Saturday and Sunday .

Location: Jalan Tali Air 4, 45400 Sekinchan

Opening hours: Saturday & Sunday 10:00 am to 05:00 pm

How to Reach

Personal vehicle.

If your intention is a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, then you should definitely drive a car or motorcycle to Sekinchan. From Kuala Lumpur, Sekinchan is only 100 kilometres away, and you can get there within 1.5 hours by driving. Moreover, a car or motorcycle is the most convenient way to visit Sekinchan attractions. And you can make your Sekinchan day trip itinerary fulfilled only by driving a personal vehicle.

However, if you don’t have a car, you can always rent one from any local car rental services through online or offline. It is usually charged from RM16.00 to RM29.00 per hour depends on which model you choose.

Public Transport

If you’re looking for affordable transport options, it is better to travel by bus. But you can never cover your day trip itinerary if you take any public transport because the bus takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Sekinchan.

The bus fees start from RM12.50, and you have to take it from Pudu Sentral , Kuala Lumpur. SPT Sabak Bernam Express bus is available on the route between Kuala Lumpur and Sekinchan. You can check the schedule and book tickets from 12GoAsia .

Travel Tips

The tropical heat in Sekinchan can burn your skin and make you dehydrated. So make sure you take your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses . And to keep yourself hydrated, bring a water bottle with you. Sekinchan is only worthwhile to visit when the paddy fields are green or golden. So it is wise to check the harvesting schedule before arrival. Never trample on the paddy fields.

Sekinchan is the best place that can satisfy your wandering soul with its raw, pristine beauty. It may be different from all the other places you’ve visited, but it will undoubtedly provide a delightful experience.

My Malaysia: A Day Trip to Sekinchan, Selangor

**We’re in the midst of Malaysia’s Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic ; and because we cannot fly out of the country at the moment, many Malaysians a re planning holidays within the country. It’s an unprecedented time to be a travel blogger, so I’m taking the opportunity to write more about my beloved country. Read more about my Malaysian travels here .

There are many fun day trips to be made out of Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Sekinchan has always been a very popular choice — but I have to admit that even after so many years of traveling and starting this travel blog… I have yet to visit! Well, I guess now is just a good time as any; and I’m so glad I got to spend the day admiring the miles and miles of paddy fields, and dining on delicious seafood. All with my growing belly in tow (and it’s the bump’s first trip out of the house)!

Sekinchan

Sekinchan, Selangor

The small town of Sekinchan is located in the west coast of Malaysia ; in the Sabak Bernam district in the state of Selangor . The town is about a 1.5-2 hour drive from the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Sekinchan is a fishing village; and is also a major rice producing area in the country, yielding one of the highest amounts of rice in Malaysia. Most people visit Sekinchan for a day trip, or a weekend getaway — and most spend their time taking photos with the beautiful paddy fields (the best time to visit is when it’s a beautiful green carpet — in the months of March-May and September-November); and dining on the tons of cheap seafood, all day long! If you’re staying longer; you can plan to venture out and visit the Sky Mirror and the Fireflies of Hulu Selangor. The best way to get to Sekinchan is by car; as it makes it easier to get from one attraction/restaurant to another. However, public transport via bus from Kuala Lumpur is also possible — but it takes a longer time as you’ll have to pass by many stops before it reaches Sekinchan. And once you arrive in town, you can rent a bicycle and cycle around the area (bear in mind that it’ll be in the crazy heat).

Sin Meng Kee Restaurant

One Day in Sekinchan

I went on my day trip to Sekinchan with my hubby, Fong; as well as our close friends Mei Ling and Choy. We were up as early as 6am, and got to their house at about 7am to carpool together to Sekinchan. I haven’t seen them for the entire 3 months of Malaysia’s Restriction Movement Order, so there was a lot of catching up to do on the drive to Sekinchan.

Breakfast at Restoran Sin Ming Kee

We arrived in Sekinchan at about 9am — just in time for breakfast. Our first stop was at a hawker centre near the local wet market, Restoran Sin Ming Kee . Choy swears by their delicious curry noodles, so that was what we were here to try! The curry noodles was thick and creamy, and topped with char siew (bbq pork), fishballs and dumplings. It is not the best I’ve tried, but still pretty good… and I enjoyed slurping on the curry soup. We also ordered a plate of chee cheong fun (rice noodles) and a packet of siew yuk (roasted pork) from an elderly lady selling it off a motorcycle. During my meal, I noticed a couple of popular vendors; there is a stall selling braised duck rice, and one selling porridge that drew in the crowds as well.

Miles and Miles of Paddy Fields

After breakfast, we decided to drive around the Sekinchan area to admire the vast expanse of paddy fields around the place. Because our visit was in June — most of the fields had already been harvested; so instead of a beautiful sea of green, we were mostly greeted with a carpet of brown. Not exactly beautiful for pictures, so we didn’t stop anywhere for photographs. However, I noticed many people parked and posing by the side of the road during my drive through the fields. Other than the paddy fields, there are also many ugly lone concrete buildings dotted around the fields — these are swiftlet houses, used for collecting birds’ nests.

Redang Beach

Redang Beach

After that, we made a stop at the only beach area in Sekinchan , the Redang Beach . It shares the same name as one of Malaysia’s most popular and beautiful East Coast islands — but it is nothing like it! Instead of white sand, turquoise waters and the smell of the ocean; you’ll be greeted by yellow sand, brownish waters, and the smell of fish. I wasn’t expecting much, but that whiff of fishy odour when I got down from the car really took me by surprise! Despite that, it was nice to see the sea again; and it is a popular place for people to bury their feet in sand, picnic, sip on a fresh coconut, or fly a kite.

Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Adjacent to the beach is a Chinese Temple that is known for its giant tree. People come from everywhere to take pictures and make wishes on the Sekinchan Wishing Tree . The entire tree is tangled with hundreds of red ribbons (that represents all the wishes), and is really quite a pretty sight. The Chinese Temple stands right next to the tree; where you can perform prayers, and also obtain a strand of red ribbon to make your wish. The threads are free; but there’s a donation box right next to it. You can then write your name and wishes on the cloth (a table and marker pens are provided) — Fong and I both wrote our names, as well as lots of wishes for our little upcoming addition!

And then it was time to fling the ribbon onto the tree. The red ribbon has two round metal coins on both sides to help hook it onto the tree. It is said that the higher up on the tree you tangle the ribbon on; the higher the chances of your wishes coming true. I have to say I got it pretty way up there on my first try! So let’s hope all those wishes come to pass.

Fishing Village

The Fishing Village

Since we’re in a fishing village — why not take some time to observe the fishing docks where the old school wooden fishing boats come in after plying the seas for the day’s catch? The boats come in all sorts of colors; with an array of fishing equipment on board. It really is a different glimpse of life compared to what we’re so used to in the city. Choy even mentioned that he’d love to one day spend a week on these boats — for a fishing experience out in the open sea. All I could think of was how extremely hot it would be! The area near the waters of Sekinchan is also lined by lots of factories/warehouses that sort through the seafood that comes through it doors.

Seafood Lunch at Redang Station No.15

And also because we’re in a fishing village — we have to enjoy a seafood meal! There are many popular and well-known seafood restaurants in Sekinchan; like the Loong Hua Restaurant or the Cha Po Tion Restaurant . However, we decided to go slightly more rustic and dropped by the equally famous Redang Station No.15 . The restaurant is located by the fishing village, and is built on wooden stilts over the water; so while enjoying a meal, we also get to watch life by the fishing village.

Our seafood meal was as fresh as fresh can get — it all comes straight from the boat into the restaurant. The restaurant serves nothing else but seafood (so no rice, no vegetables), and most of the food are either boiled, grilled or stir-fried. We ordered a plate of 10 huge mantis prawns, boiled tiger shrimps, clams in Chinese wine, bouncy fishballs and the restaurant’s signature seafood fried noodles. The meal was absolutely delicious, and it cost about RM180 (~US$40) between the four of us. Oh, and if you love fresh oysters, they serve that too!

Paddy Factory

The Paddy Processing Factory

After lunch, it was back to visiting the local attractions. Our next stop was at the Paddy Processing Factory . The factory is a running rice-processing facility; with a museum gallery, as well as shops selling rice products and snacks. The Paddy Gallery costs RM5 (~US$1.2) to enter — and it’s a great place for kids and adults alike, who’d love to learn the entire process of planting, harvesting and processing paddy. The rest of the Paddy Processing Factory’s main area is free to roam. The factory is located in the middle of the paddy fields in Sekinchan; but there’s also a small plot within the factory vicinity that I believe is for picture-taking purposes. It wasn’t harvested during my visit, so it was a luscious green and perfect for that paddy fields shot.

Ah Ma House

Another attraction in Sekinchan is Ah Ma House (Grandma’s House). It features a display of old antiques like furniture, kitchen utensils, cameras, house appliances and so on — all the things that you would usually find in your grandmother’s house. It was actually pretty nice going through some of these old nostalgic items, and it brought me on a trip down memory lane to my childhood days. The small shop also sells snacks and food items (some from back then), and new trinkets in olden designs. Other than that, there was really nothing much else to see; but since entrance is free, it doesn’t hurt to make a quick visit. There’s also a Kampung Atuk (Grandpa’s Village) just down the street from Ah Ma House — but we didn’t stop by.

Mango King

Mango Smoothies at Mango King

We saved the best for last! Sekinchan is also known for the freshest and sweetest mangoes; and being a huge mango fan, I knew I had to leave Mango King for the final stop so that I could spend as much time as I wanted to select all the delicious sweet mango to bring home. Mango King is a makeshift stall located within the paddy fields area of Sekinchan; and sells mangoes, mango drinks, mango ice-cream and snacks. While there, I ordered a refreshing mango smoothie for RM6 (US$1.4) that was perfect for the hot and humid afternoon. I also bought mangoes, and though I can’t really remember how much the mangoes cost per kg; I know that I paid RM20 (~US$4.6) for 4 huge mangoes!

It was about 4pm by the time we were done at Sekinchan; and before leaving, we decided to make a quick stop at the new (and increasingly popular) N.16 Bus Cafe . It’s a small cafe that features an old school bus on top of a container, and is located next to the well-known Sekinchan Padi Box Homestay. We were too full to fit anything else into our stomachs, so it was just to have a look around and for some pictures.

We reached back home at about 6pm. Being pregnant at 7 months, the trip made me a little tired — but it was nice to get out and about, and to have a little ‘cuti-cuti Malaysia’ getaway. Sekinchan is indeed a great choice for a day trip out of the capital city; and I really did enjoy all that yummylicious eating!

Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Side Trips and Other Things to Do in Sekinchan

If you have more time and decide to stay a night (or two) in Sekinchan or the area around Hulu Selangor , there are other fun things to do as well. Here’s a list of things that I really hope to do in the future!

  • Stay in containers in the middle of the paddy fields at the Sekinchan Padi Box Homestay .
  • Take a boat ride through the mangroves to see the Kuala Selangor Fireflies .
  • Visit the Sky Mirror , which is our Malaysian version of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats .

2024 Review my Sekinchan day trip: things to do, itinerary & best time to visit

weekend-get-away-from-kl-selangor-places-to-visit-in-sekinchan-things-to-do-what-to-do-tourist-spot-attraction-paddy-field-season-best-time-to-visit-day-trip-itinerary-sekinchan00010

Sekinchan is located in the Sabak Bernam District of Selangor, 100 km away from Kuala Lumpur.

Although it’s a fishing village, Sekinchan is known among tourists for its lush green paddy fields; in fact, its name “Sekinchan” literally means “village suitable for plantation” in the Teo Chew dialect (Chinese).

I visited Sekinchan twice but the first time wasn’t during the paddy field season. My second trip to Sekinchan went well and was fun, except for the extremely hot weather.

If you are planning your Sekinchan trip, continue reading my post until the end to get all the useful information about Sekinchan, including the paddy field season, the best things to do in Sekinchan , the best time to visit Sekinchan paddy field, and my suggested Sekinchan trip itinerary.

And don’t hesitate to share and comment with any questions about the Sekinchan trip.

1. The best time to visit Sekinchan

2. best things to do in sekinchan, 3. sekinchan trips’s itinerary, 4. how to go to sekinchan from kuala lumpur, 5. best homestays in sekinchan.

The main attraction in Sekinchan is the paddy rice field; therefore, you need to visit during its paddy field season. In Sekinchan, there are two rice seasons:

  • The first crop is sown in March and harvested in June.
  • The second crop spans from September to November.

So the best time to visit Sekinchan paddy field is between sowing and harvesting month.

However, keep in mind that the timing may not always align precisely with the above schedule. It could be either a month earlier or later.

  • If you’re staying overnight in Sekinchan, you can inquire with your homestay host about the condition of the paddy fields. Or you can scroll to the FAQs section at the end to see how the color of the Sekinchan paddy field is each month.
  • Avoid traveling to Sekinchan in January, February, July, and August as during these months, instead of lush green rice fields, you’ll see muddy plains.

I had a day trip to Sekinchan in September and here is how it looked:

places-to-visit-in-sekinchan-things-to-do-what-to-do-tourist-spot-attraction-paddy-field-season-best-time-to-visit-day-trip-itinerary-sekinchan00010

Furthermore, you should avoid the rainy season as well. The months of September, October, and November often experience showers, with rain occurring most days. Therefore, if you plan to travel to Sekinchan during those months, you should check the weather forecast when planning your Sekinchan trip’s itinerary.

Snap photos at Sekinchan Paddy Field

The paddy fields are likely the main attraction you’ll want to see during your Sekinchan day trip.

Renowned for its high rice yields, Sekinchan boasts thousands of acres of paddy fields that are especially stunning when the rice is golden and ripe.

Taking captivating photos with the backdrop of lush green fields and a blue sky is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Sekinchan.

Visit Paddy Gallery

The Paddy Gallery is where you can witness the process of the paddy plantation.

Additionally, you can take pictures with the rice seedling transplanter at the main entrance.

If you enjoy snacks, consider purchasing some Mi Xiang Tang packs (Rice crackers); they’re incredibly crispy and flavorful. The owner will offer you free samples to try first. Personally, I like the sesame and cashew nut flavor the most, but it’s a bit pricey at RM 16 per box (just found out that they also sell via This link for only RM 14 haha).

There is also a souvenir shop selling Sekinchan rice and other staple products. We purchased a pack of rice, but the texture and flavor were average; I still prefer Vietnamese and Thai rice.

It’s such an interesting idea to turn an old school bus into a fully functioning cafe shop.

The cafe serves cake and drinks at an affordable price. If you’re a fan of cheesecake, be sure to order a slice of their Blueberry cheesecake when you visit.

My suggestion is to visit this bus cafe in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t too intense. This way, you can enjoy the outdoor seats that offer a view of the entire paddy field from about 3 meters above the ground.

Make a wish at Sekinchan Wishing tree

Another Instagrammable tourist spot in Sekinchan is the Wishing Tree, adorned with numerous red ribbons.

According to Chinese belief, people write their wishes on these red ribbons, which are then tied to ancient Chinese coins and thrown onto the tree. The higher your ribbon lands, the more likely your wishes will come true. Trust me, it’s not so easy to achieve a high position, haha.

places-to-visit-in-sekinchan-things-to-do-what-to-do-tourist-spot-attraction-paddy-field-season-best-time-to-visit-day-trip-itinerary-sekinchan00010

To get a red ribbon, you need to walk up to the Chinese Temple behind the tree. If possible, you can make a donation before taking one; there’s a pen and table provided for writing your wishes.

Opposite the temple, you’ll find souvenir stalls selling dried seafood and other food. According to my Malaysian mother-in-law, the prices are reasonable.

Buy some freshly made fish ball

We also visited a fish ball production facility during our trip called Sekinchan Mimi Fishball | 适耕庄咪咪鱼丸. This place sells freshly made fish balls, stuffed beancurds, stuffed tofu, and other steamboat items. The price is as low as RM 0.6- 1.5/ piece.

We bought some fish balls and stuffed tofu to take home and try. The fish balls were crunchy and flavorful, but the tofu wasn’t to my liking.

Explore Kuala Selangor

what-to-do-in-kuala-selangor

Kuala Selangor, located about 30 km from Sekinchan, is another fishing village and one of my favorite day trip destinations in Selangor.

It’s known for its unique natural phenomena such as the Sky Mirror, Fireflies, and Blue Tears. However, it’s impossible to participate in all these activities during a day trip, so I recommend choosing just one or considering a 2-day trip.

Other things to do in Sekinchan

Honestly, I visited Sekinchan on a day trip, so I only focused on the most beautiful and famous places. In addition to the places I mentioned above, here are some other places to visit in Sekinchan that might interest you:

  • Ah Ma House: A bakery shop known for its traditional Kuih Kapit (egg waffle). It has vintage decor and a collection of antiques from the old days, including TVs, furniture, cameras, clocks, and more.
  • Mango King: This place is famous for its fresh mango smoothies, priced at only RM7 per mango. You can even pick the mango for your drink.
  • Bagan Fishing Village : In this fishing village, you can observe fishing boats at the ferry dock and see how fishermen categorize fish by type and size.
  • Pantai Rendang Beach: Honestly, this beach isn’t particularly special. The water is neither clean nor clear, making it unsuitable for swimming, but you can take a walk and enjoy the sunset.
  • MSekin Wonderland: This water theme park is great for bringing your little ones, as most of the games are designed for kids.

Sekinchan is located about 100 km from Kuala Lumpur, approximately a 1.5-hour drive. There are three ways to get to Sekinchan from Kuala Lumpur:

It’s highly advisable to travel to Sekinchan by your own private car or motorbike because bus schedules from KL to Sekinchan are not frequent, and finding a Grab driver in this area can be challenging. Therefore, driving on your own is the best option, especially for a day trip.

If you’re not a local, you can rent a car through This link , with prices starting from RM 120 per day for a 4-seater car (enter code DL6KGF to get RM 20 off ).

If you prefer to rent a car with a driver, don’t hesitate to contact me via WhatsApp at +60 149 776 712 or My Instagram for more information.

I only recommend taking the bus from KL to Sekinchan if you’re on an overnight trip. Buses depart from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) or Pudu Sentral (Puduraya) in KL. Bus tickets cost between RM 17 and RM 21, and the journey takes approximately 2 hours (if there is no traffic jam). Tickets can be purchased through This link .

If you also plan to visit Kuala Selangor, there is a SmartKS01 bus connecting Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan. It takes 1.5 hours to travel between the two places by bus (30 minutes on foot plus 1 hour by bus).

For non-local tourists, joining a tour to Sekinchan is likely the most practical option. Here are some ideal tours to consider:

  • Sky Mirror & Sekinchan Paddy Field Day Tour from Kuala Lumpur
  • Sekinchan + Kuala Selangor Full-Day Tour from Kuala Lumpur

16 Best Things to Do in & around Sekinchan, Malaysia

* This article was originally published on Ummi Goes Where? in 2021.

For many months during the pandemic, we Malaysians were not allowed to cross state borders. But the good thing was, we got to spend more time exploring our own vicinity that we had previously taken for granted, in favor of faraway destinations.

Not long after my bamboo-themed glamping staycation with my ex-colleagues at Tadom Hill Resorts , we decided to gather again for another road trip before the fasting month began.

This time around, with the addition of two new people to our group, we went to Sekinchan.

About Sekinchan

Sekinchan is a beach-side fishing village in Sabak Bernam, Selangor — located about 100 kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. Apart from fresh seafood, Sekinchan is also famous for its sprawling paddy fields, covering a total area of 180 square kilometers.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Being one of the major rice producers in the country, it is home to a number of rice factories, some of which allow the public to visit and learn about rice production.

A few years ago, Sekinchan was featured in a romantic Hong Kong drama called Outbound Love and again in a local Chinese series called “ The Seeds of Life “. As a result, what used to be a quiet fishing village is now garnering more attention from people all over the country. But don’t worry — the beauty and authenticity of this place is still very much preserved.

Only a 1.5-hour drive from the capital city, Sekinchan is one of the best day-trip destinations from Kuala Lumpur .

Best Time to Go to Sekinchan

The weather in Sekinchan barely varies at all, with temperatures ranging from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF) and a chance of rain throughout most of the year.

However, if you’re visiting Sekinchan, chances are you want to see the rice fields in all their lush glory.

Rice is planted twice a year in Sekinchan — in early March and early September. From  mid-March to May , and from  mid-September to November , the plants would have grown and the rice fields would be at their greenest.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

On the other hand, if you want to see golden fields, go in the middle of May or the middle of November when the plants are mature and ready to be harvested.

Harvesting begins in June and December, so you might want to avoid going during this time, unless you specifically want to see the harvesting process. Between January and February, and July and August, the fields undergo a clean-up and resting period, during which they’re nothing but muddy plains.

Depending on the season and the weather, the harvesting schedule might vary a little. It’s a good idea to check with your hotel before going.

How to Get to Sekinchan

Going by car is the best way to get to Sekinchan, as it also makes it easier for you to travel around town. From Kuala Lumpur, take the LATAR Expressway and exit at Ijok – Kuala Selangor – Sekinchan.

By Public Transport

Take the SPT Sabak Bernam Express bus from Pudu Sentral, Kuala Lumpur (formerly known as Puduraya Bus Terminal) to Sekinchan Sentral Bus Terminal. Please check with the bus company or booking apps for the latest fare and schedule.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

From the Sekinchan Bus Terminal, you can either hire a taxi to travel around Sekinchan, or rent a bike at the rental shops. Some hotels also provide bike rental services for guests and non-guests.

If your hotel is located near the main road, it’s possible to ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest junction and you can walk the rest of the way.

Things to Do in & Around Sekinchan

The day before our trip, we had made a booking for a tour in Kuala Selangor , a nearby town (about 28 kilometres away) where we would be feeding eagles, watching fireflies, and looking for bioluminescent microorganisms in the river. The tour would start at 5 p.m.

Since we had a couple of hours to kill after checking in at Padi Box Homes & Cafe , we decided to go to the nearby Paddy Museum.

Read:  Padi Box, Sekinchan – Container Hotel Amidst Rice Fields

1. Visiting the Paddy Museum

It only seemed fitting to learn a little about rice fields, considering that we were staying in one. At the museum, we learned about the entire process of rice production in Sekinchan, from the sowing, harvesting, dehulling, and all the way to the final product.

It really was an enlightening experience to discover more about our staple food. Plus, we each got a free packet of rice!

2. Eagle Feeding

After the museum, we made our way to Kuala Selangor for our next activity: eagle feeding.

We bundled ourselves up in life jackets and went on a passenger boat that was a little too big for the 6 of us, but the extra space proved to be a blessing, as we got to move around freely to take pictures.

Somewhere at a wider part of the river, the boat slowed to a stop. I didn’t see exactly when our guide scattered out the food, but the birds suddenly came like vultures.

At first, there were only seagulls (or some kind of white birds I don’t know the name of), but soon we saw an eagle swooping towards us. Then, out of nowhere, several others came, and before we realized it, there were at least 20 of them hovering low and snatching food out of the water.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

The eagles kept their distance while the hundreds of white birds were close enough we could have touched them if we reached out with our hands. It was amazing how they didn’t crash into each other, flying so close together.

3. Seeing the Blue Tears

We had approximately an hour and a half before our next activity, so we went to have dinner at a nearby restaurant. Due to a small accident at the restaurant (the young waiter tripped and dropped all our food on the floor), we were delayed by about 30 minutes.

As a result, we had to join another group for the boat ride to see the bioluminescent microorganisms, a.k.a the “blue tears”. Each participant was given a small net attached to a long pole, and when we reached the location, the tour guide told us to put our nets in the water. As our nets disturbed the water surface, we could see tiny blue spheres glowing in the ripples.

Some of us got curious and turned on our phone flash lights, but as soon as we did, the blue tears disappeared. Upon closer inspection, they looked just like sand but with the texture of jelly.

Since they were not visible when there was light, we were unable to take any photos of them. All I can say is that they were quite fascinating to watch and play with, but don’t expect anything as impressive as what you see on the tour brochures.

4. Watching Fireflies

Next on our itinerary was firefly-watching. This time, it was just us again — the bigger group that we had to join earlier was already done with their tour.

I had done this activity years ago but on a much smaller boat that could only fit 5 persons including the guide. Read the full experience here:

Read:   Watching Fireflies in Kuala Selangor

The advantage of going on a smaller boat was that it was quieter (so we didn’t scare away the fireflies) and we got to come closer to the tree branches. The guide was also able to explain to us more thoroughly about the insects.

However, although the boat was larger this time, there were just the 6 of us, so the guide was still able to entertain us all when we each wanted to try holding a firefly in the palms of our hands.

Our tour package cost RM45 per person for the three activities. We booked with D Tours .

Alternatively, you can also book tours on online platforms such as Klook:

5. Visiting the Sky Mirror (Sasaran Beach)

Another place you can visit in Kuala Selangor that can be included in the tour is the Sky Mirror — also known as Malaysia’s Salar de Uyuni — a “mystery island” that only emerges for a few days a month. During this time, the shallow water at low tide reflects the sky so perfectly and creates many delightful photo opportunities.

However, a visit here has to be timed carefully based on the tide schedule. Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right during our visit, so we had to skip that.

6. Taking Pictures at the Rice Fields

The next morning, Dila, the avid photographer in our group had gone out at 8 a.m. to get the best light for pictures at the paddy fields. The rest of us weren’t so motivated and thus continued snoozing under our comfy blankets.

It was only at 10 a.m. that we all came out of our hiding, but by then the sun was already high up in the sky, almost as if it was 1 p.m.

So, here’s a little PSA: make sure you bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with SPF 50 or more when you go to Sekinchan because it can get unnaturally hot very early in the day.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Do take care not to trample on the rice fields in order to get your perfect shots. Remember that those are people’s hard work and source of sustenance!

7. Cycling Around Town

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Bicycles are available at rental shops in town and at some hotels. We rented ours from our hotel for RM10 for two hours (RM10/hour for non-guests).

8. Going Down Memory Lane at Ah Ma House

Ah Ma House (which means Grandma’s House) is a unique attraction in Sekinchan, featuring household items of another era, including things like old grandfather clocks, gas lanterns, and rotary phones. Millennials like me would be able to recognize most of the items, but I imagine it might totally astound Gen Z’s.

Besides showcasing antiques, Ah Ma House also sells homemade cookies and crackers that are sure to invoke memories of your childhood.

9. Chilling Out at Redang Beach

Located only 5 kilometres from Sekinchan, Redang Beach (not to be confused with Redang Island) may not be Malaysia’s best beach, but it still provides a beautiful landscape for pictures, or for those who simply want to soak in the scenery while lying on a hammock.

Food and drinks are sold on site, including coconut water, ice cream, and sugar-cane juice. Take advantage of the windiness and play a kite (also sold at some of the stalls on the beach).

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

10. Making a Wish at the Wishing Tree

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Within immediate vicinity of the beach is a peculiar-looking tree that seems to be all covered in red. If you look closer, you’ll see that the red things are actually ribbons hanging off all its branches. These ribbons hold people’s wishes.

To make a wish, get a lucky red ribbon from the adjacent temple (with a small donation), write down your wishes and your name, and then toss it up to the wishing tree. The ends of the ribbons have been tied with coins to ease this process.

Try to get your ribbon as high up on the tree as you can. Legend has it that the higher it lands, the more likely it is to get your dream come true. There is one condition though: you have to keep your wish a secret!

11. Visiting the Fishing Village

The main fishing village in Sekinchan is called Bagan, located along the river, southwest of town. To see the village at its liveliest, go in the early morning when the fishing boats go out to sea, or in the evening when they return to the seaport and unload their catch. At other times of the day, the village can be very quiet.

In Bagan, you can find a lot of seafood restaurants and buy seafood products to bring home. There’s also a boat-building factory where you can see boats being made and repaired.

12. Visiting Nan Tian Temple

Sekinchan’s two main industries — farming and fishing — are both highly weather-dependent. Therefore, you will see many Chinese temples and churches in the village, where the locals pray for calm ocean and bountiful harvests.

The main Chinese temple is the Nan Tian Gong (Nine Emperors God Temple), which was first built in 1984. You can climb up to the second floor of the temple tower to get excellent views of the rice fields.

13. Learning about Swiftlet Farming

In the Chinese community, bird-nest soup has long been considered a rare delicacy. Dubbed “the emperor’s soup”, it is a luxury health food that — in ancient times — was reserved only for the emperors and elites of China.

While in the past, bird nests could only be harvested from deep inside caves, today’s bird-nest farming experts have developed a modern technique called swiftlet farming. A “ swiftlet house ” is built to imitate the environment of a cave to attract swiftlet birds to nest and breed. This new method produces cleaner bird nests and eliminates the dangers of traditional bird-nest harvesting.

Swiftlet farming is a fairly new industry in Sekinchan, with about 350 units of swiftlet houses having been built in the middle of rice fields. You can take a look inside these structures to learn more about swiftlet farming.

14. Touring the Khind Galleria

Khind-Mistral Industries Ltd is a local manufacturer of electrical and electronic appliances. Having been around since 1961, the company is well-known for their durable and high-quality products.

At Khind Galleria, visitors can see a showcase of products manufactured by them from the day of their inception till today. Opens at 9 a.m. – 5 pm. Admission is free.

15. Hiking Bukit Malawati

Bukit Malawati is a hill near Kuala Selangor that overlooks the Straits of Malacca and has a lighthouse as well as the remnants of the Kota Malawati fort.

Originally built in the 1700s to protect against Dutch invasion, the fort was renamed Fort Altingburg when the Dutch successfully captured it. It was later recaptured but eventually destroyed in a war.

Bukit Malawati is also famous for silvered leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques. Other attractions on this hill include a tram ride, a royal mausoleum, and a museum.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

16. Trying Out Local Food

Being a fishing and farming village, it comes as no surprise that Sekinchan is abundant with fresh seafood and local produce. So, don’t forget to try the local delicacies when you’re here — which brings us to our next question:

What & Where to Eat in Sekinchan

1. n16 bus cafe.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

The N16 Bus Cafe is quite possibly the most iconic establishment in Sekinchan. Set inside an old school bus that has been renovated into a cafe, it sits on top of a freight container that acts as the kitchen. The air-conditioned dining area provides a temporary respite from the unforgiving heat outside, so that you can enjoy your coffee and the views of paddy fields more comfortably.

If you’re into quirky, one-of-a-kind places, then this should be right up your alley. The N16 Bus Cafe is located right next to Padi Box , where we were staying, but unfortunately, it was closed during our visit.

2. Pearl-Rice Cendol at the Paddy Gallery

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Cendol is without a doubt one of Malaysia’s best desserts . The cold creamy concoction of coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, sweetcorn, red beans, and rice flour jelly is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

But what makes the cendol at the Paddy Gallery special is the addition of another ingredient: pearl rice (a sticky, short-grained type of rice, similar to sushi rice). Apart from cendol, the Paddy Gallery also sells ice-cream, rice crackers, tapioca chips, and banana chips, among many others.

3. Mangoes at Mango King

Rice is not the only agricultural produce of Sekinchan. Mangoes are another. You can get mangoes at the stalls along Sekinchan main road, but if you crave for something more (like the sweetest and most satisfying mango smoothie you’ll ever taste), then you need to head over to Mango King — a small shop located in the midst of paddy fields, just down the road from the Paddy Gallery.

Other than the heavenly smoothies, Mango King also sells snacks and other beverages.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Unless you’re vegetarian or allergic, it would be a shame to visit Sekinchan and not try the seafood. Sekinchan has too many seafood restaurants to mention and there are both halal and non-halal options available.

On our way back to Kuala Lumpur, we stopped by at  Faridah Mentarang Bakar  to try the local specialty: the  mentarang  (duck mouth clams). Bigger than mussels, the duck mouth clam has a mild taste and is a must-try in Sekinchan. Another unusual dish we tried for the first time was grilled horseshoe crab ( belangkas bakar ).

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

5. Coconut Shake at Sekinchan Coconut Farm

Just when you think there are no more interesting things to do in Sekinchan, here comes the Sekinchan Coconut Farm. How do you feel about sipping on some velvety smooth coconut milkshake while enjoying the breeze under the cool shade of coconut trees?

The coconut farm is only open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other items on the menu include pandan coconut water, coconut cookies, coconut candy, coconut pudding, waffles, fried chicken, prawn crackers, herbal eggs, rainbow roti canai, popiah (spring rolls), oden, dumplings, rojak, sweetcorn, seasonal fruits, keropok lekor, and nasi lemak.

How Long to Spend in Sekinchan

It is possible to visit Sekinchan on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur . If you start early and the weather is great, there’s a good chance that you will be able to see most — if not all — of the attractions in Sekinchan within one day.

However, I would highly recommend staying in one of the homestays in Sekinchan, so that you get to wake up to the green splendor of the rice fields. If you’re planning to visit Kuala Selangor and do all the tours as well, then it is definitely a wise decision to stay for at least one night.

Where to Stay in Sekinchan

Sekinchan is not short of unique accommodation options. Currently trending are hotels that are made of recycled freight containers, like the one we stayed at:

Padi Box Homes & Cafe

Probably the most famous container hotel in Sekinchan, this eco-friendly accommodation looks pretty both inside and outside. Each of the containers is painted a different color to reflect its fun and whimsical vibe. They made me think of candyfloss!

The interior is also tastefully decorated and the space so well-utilized that you forget you’re actually inside a freight container. Padi Box is located in the midst of paddy fields, which allows you to see the greenery right from your bed. From RM118/night for a Standard 2-Pax Room.

Read the full review:  Padi Box, Sekinchan — Container Hotel Amidst Rice Fields

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Farm Ville Cafe & Homestay

While Padi Box is rainbow-hued, Farm Ville Cafe & Homestay is all red and black, contrasting beautifully with the green of the fields. It’s just a short distance away from Padi Box, so we made a quick stop there on our morning ride.

Also featuring freight containers as their building structures, this homestay is equipped with a swimming pool with a slide, a trampoline, a BBQ area, a ping pong table, and karaoke system. From RM98/night for a Deluxe Twin or King Room.

kuala selangor sekinchan day trip

Yet another container hotel in the middle of rice fields, Villa Chee seems to want to blend with the surrounding, thanks to its bright green facade. This accommodation has a garden and a swimming pool on its terrace, and some of the rooms come with private balconies. You can also have BBQ on the rooftop. From RM205/night for a Superior Queen or Deluxe Room.

Final Thoughts

I can’t believe that in all my years in Selangor, I had never visited Sekinchan, especially considering just how many attractions it has got to offer. As I haven’t yet managed to cover them all, it seems like a repeat trip is in order.

Again, here are a few reminders for those of you who plan to visit this place:

  • Sekinchan can be very hot , and even more so if you’re not used to tropical heat. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and bring your sunscreen/hat/sunglasses, preferably all three.
  • Timing is everything when you visit Sekinchan. So, make sure you check the harvesting schedule before you go. If you’re planning to do the Sky Mirror, check the tide schedule as well.
  • Sekinchan can be a little weekend-centric . Going on weekdays means less crowd, but don’t count on every shop to be open.
  • Be respectful — do not trample on the poor rice!

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip: What to do in Sekinchan

May 29, 2015 by summerkid_summergirl

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

Sekinchan is a small town located about 100KM from Kuala Lumpur, considered as Sabak Bernam district of Selangor. It is one of the major rice producer in Malaysia, at the same time also a fishing village that supply fresh seafood.

It used to be quiet, but when a Hong Kong TVB drama 单恋双城 had some of their scenes taken in Pantai Redang, the name of Sekinchan goes viral and throng of crowds begins flooding to the place to discover what this place has to offer. As a result, it becomes one of the fastest developed tourist attraction in Malaysia in a very short duration.

We have heard a lot about Sekinchan, many have visited this place too but we never. Summerkid is so eager to drop by because being a cityboy, he doesn’t even have the chance to see how mango tree or papaya tree looks like, while Summergirl on the other hand, is a  kampunggirl   grown up surrounded by fresh seafood from fishing village nearby, scenery of paddy field, fruit farm, oil palm plantations; papaya, rambutan, durian and mango right from their house backyard.

Thanks to the 4 days of long holiday in early of May, we finally paid a visit to Sekinchan. A little bit to know about Sekinchan before you visit:

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

How far is Sekinchan : Sekinchan is about 1 and half hour drive from KL city centre. One can reach there by car, or by bus from Puduraya Bus Terminal (counter SPT Sabak Bernam-Kuala Lumpur). Read more HERE . It is more encouraged to book a day-tour-van for easy access to all tourist spots in Sekinchan especially for non-local tourists.

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

How’s the weather in Sekinchan : One word – HOT! Malaysia is scorching hot all year long, weather changes very fast here, expect big sun or big rain any time (But big sun is better than big rain, don’t think you want to walk along the paddy field in rains).  Make sure you are well-prepared with hats, sunglasses, sunblock, lotion, long sleeves shirts, etc.. Drink lots of water too.

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

How many days you should stay in Sekinchan : It depends. For us, we had only 1 day trip in Sekinchan, is more than enough. There is actually nothing much to cover in Sekinchan – paddy field, fishing village, seaside, paddy processing gallery, all can be done within 3-4 hours. Add on with buying fish, crackers, dine in seafood restaurant, one day is more than enough. But for those who came from far, you can stay for 2D1N for more leisure Sekinchan trip, especially if you visited with family.

Sekinchan 1 day trip

Where to stay in Sekinchan : There are ample of hotels available in Sekinchan. We saw resorts too. Suggest to book ahead if there’s any holidays, to avoid disappointment.

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

What to eat in Sekinchan : Seafood of course ! Being a fishing village, you should try out Sekinchan seafood if you are happen to be there. They are fresh, cheaper in price compare to the city. Kopitiam, food court, food stalls are available too.

What souvenir to buy in Sekinchan : Besides seafood, we can’t really tell what are the noteworthy “souvenir” to purchase in Sekinchan, even though we saw many purchase prawn crackers, handmade fishballs, and handmade biscuit from some shops. We started to wonder, all small towns seem to famous with handmade stuff huh? Handmade biscuit for example, cannot be done in the city? Why is everyone so hu-ha to get dozens of them?

What to do in Sekinchan : Yes, this is our highlight. We summarize 11 things to do in Sekinchan, and sorry that not all attraction and must-do(s) are in here because the weather was too hot to bear with. The whole town is lack of shelter area except the seaside. We got sunburnt by the end of the day, having sorethroat and feeling uncomfortable too.

1)  Visit the Paddy Field

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

Believes no one will leave Sekinchan without taking a photo with the wide paddy fields that cover more than thousands acres.  The field is green from middle of March till May (and middle of Sep till Nov), goes yellowish in mid of May till June (and mid of Nov till Dec). Transplanting is in early of March and early of Sep. Jan-Feb (July to August) is resting time, hence not exactly suggested to go at this period.

2) Visit the Seaside

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

Pantai Redang is another must-visit place in Sekinchan, not because of the soft white sand or clear blue sea (in fact, the seaside doesn’t reach any of that, it is dirty), but to track down scenes taken by the TVB drama we guest? Be careful when the tide is out during daytime, especially families who brought along kids.  This is what happened to Summerkid – legs inside the mud. At first Summergirl thought he was trying to stabilize his position this way so he could take better photos. Until he shouted “Help me!”, then she realized it wasn’t so. Consequences, legs covered in mud and a torn Crocs. OK, we don’t know we should cry our laugh.

3) Eat Seafood

Sekinchan 1 Day Trip

There are many seafood restaurant around Sekinchan, such as Hao Xiang Chi Seafood Restaurant, Guan Seng Long Restaurant, Jiann Chyi Restaurant, Restaurant Bagan Sekinchan, Sheng Hui Restaurant, Wan Lau Seafood Restaurant and more. Jiann Chyi Seafood Restaurant 建旗海鮮飯店 should be the most famous in town, as the restaurant is added with crown from Ah Xian阿賢. Not going to judge how their food taste like, as we were rejected right outside the shop. Staffs attitude is impolite, one of them waved to us (*a signfying of NO, we are not serving you) from far, and another one come to us and ask : Got reserve? We say : NO. and he say: Then no place for you. In the end we went to the restaurant next door and ordered few of the dishes, including chilli shrimps and deep fried shark meat. Average in taste, and the chilli shrimps was really disappointing.

4) Get More Lucks with Sekinchan Wishing Tree

Sekinchan 1 day trip

The very iconic attraction in Sekinchan. Get lucky red cloth from the temple, write down your wishes and name, throw it up to the tree. Thanks to an uncle who taught us how to balance both ends of the lucky wishing cloth, so that we could get it hung on the tree in one try.  Yeah, it works! Our wishes are up on the Wishing Tree at one throw.

5) Visit Temples

Sekinchan 1 day trip

Sekinchan most famous temple goes to Nan Tian Temple, a temple located in the middle of paddy field in Sekinchin Site A. Besides Nan Tian Temple, one can drop by at Tian Fu Temple, Bao An Temple, Xian Fa Shi Gong Temple, Shuui Wei Sheng Nian Temple, Guan Di Temple, Nan Hai Guan Yin Temple, just to name a few.

6) Play Kite and Blow Soap Bubbles

Sekinchan 1 day trip

This is so cool, we felt like kids again playing with soap bubbles, enjoying light reflections from the film surfaces before they rupture. We saw a kid who was really good in blowing slim, long soap bubbles. *Clap hands.*

7) Visit Paddy Processing Gallery

Sekinchan 1 day trip

Pay RM5, receive 1 small packet of rice as a token of appreciation, walk up the Paddy Museum to have better understanding of paddy plantation process. The entire gallery is mini, but the effort is good in getting general public to know further on all the hardwork behind your daily staple.

8) Climb up Tree House

Sekinchan 1 day trip

9) Swing Your Worries Away

Sekinchan 1 day trip

10) Buy seafood

Sekinchan 1 day trip

There is no need further introduction. This is what everyone says : “Fishing village supplies the freshest seafood in town. So must buy. “

11) Eat Mango

Sekinchan 1 day trip

We love mango from Sekinchan, they are so sweet, fleshy. You can get them from the fruit stall, or fruit farm 華仔芒果園 near to Paddy Processing Factory. Very nice. Oh ya, now there is another “souvenir” to bring back home from Sekinchan – Mango.

PETALING JAYA: Voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu will head to the ballot box on May 11 in a by-election to choose their state assembly representative.

To measure how the constituency stacks up against other state seats in Selangor, The Star analysed figures in the Subnational State Assembly Seat Statistics 2023 report issued by the Statistics Department.

Here is what we found:

It is Selangor’s ‘biggest’ seat

In terms of land area, Kuala Kubu Baharu is the largest among Selangor’s 56 state seats at 617 square km.

As a comparison, Kuala Kubu Baharu is two-and-a-half times bigger than the federal city of Kuala Lumpur (243 square km) which is located about an hour’s drive away.

Kuala Kubu Baharu is 88 times larger than the smallest state seat in Selangor which is Kampung Tunku which measures just 7 square km.

Here is how the seats compare against each other in terms of land area:

Other than its size, Kuala Kubu Baharu holds another record among Selangor state seats for having the biggest number of villages at 47.

Low population density

Despite its physical size, Kuala Kubu Baharu has one of the lowest population densities among Selangor’s state assembly constituencies.

With a relatively small population of 47,700, Kuala Kubu Baharu has a population density of 77 persons per square km, the third lowest in the state.

Ageing population

Kuala Kubu is in the top 10 among Selangor seats in terms of ageing population, with 15.8% of its residents aged 65 years and older.

Another reflection of population ageing in the seat is in the percentage of its residents who are of working age, defined as those aged between 15 and 64 years.

The working age population in Kuala Kubu stands at 63.7%, the seventh lowest among Selangor state seats.

Due to its relatively small percentage of working age population, Kuala Kubu Baharu has one of the lowest average monthly household incomes in Selangor at RM5,497 per month.

Here are some facts on facilities available in Kuala Kubu Baharu:
