Volkswagen Sharan review
The hallmarks of a limo – space, comfort, quality…
...all wrapped up in a great big shed
What is it?
Volkswagen doesn’t make interesting, quirky MPVs in the same way the French do, but that’s like saying jeans aren’t interesting in the same way leopard-skin trousers are – which would you rather take the kids to school in?
The Sharan is a big version of the Touran, which is a big version of the Golf SV, which is… you get the idea. Nothing about VW’s grandest seven-seat MPV is surprising, really – it’s beautifully made, refined and reassuringly/frighteningly expensive. Though if that's immediately a worry, might we direct you to the Seat Alhambra, which is exactly the same car, with a less posh badge (as if you care) and less toppy prices to suit.
In isolation, the Sharan is a really solid big MPV though. Yes, the name of VW's mumsiest car is as mumsy as it gets, but fundametnally, the Sharon, sorry, Shazza, no, Sharan is a well-thought out machine. The sliding doors are so lightweight you needn't bother with any electric motorising that'll add cost and complication. the seven seats can all seat an adult, and fold intuitively, once you've rehearsed where the pull-straps for each spring-loaded backrest live.
The slab-sided Sharan has really open visibility, and the parts-bin VW interior feels solid without falling into the trap of being offensively low-rent-for-families, or overly plush and too nice for the kids to spoil. Ergonomically, the layout is spot on, though the French do offer more cabin stowage. You'll keep your Sharan tidier, simply because there are fewer places to lose a jam sandwich and Barbie Dreamhouse accessories inside...
Our choice from the range
What's the verdict?
No seven seat MPV qualifies as truly desirable now the SUV has captured public imagination, tastes and spending power, but the Sharan is a reminder that a well-executred van-with-windows can be a really endearing, useful object. Unpretentious, too. The VW Sharan is all of these things, and its sheer ease of use makes it well worth a look. It's the VW notion of premium pricing that mitigates its appeal, because it'll be no more resistant to depreication than its similarly frumpy classmates, including the cheaper to start with Seat Alhambra, which is a mere rebadge away from being an identical car.

Well, these are two pretty similar cars we have here! It's only details that could potentially make the difference. Considering they both belong to the mpv segment and utilize the same 5-door MPV body style and the front wheel drive system, it all comes up to the specific diesel engine choice they offer. The first one has a Volkswagen-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 170hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 163hp engine designed by VM Motori.
Both vehicles got tested by European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), with the Volkswagen being a slightly better choice apparently. Still, apart from the official crash test results there are other things we need to be aware of. Both vehicles belong to the mpv segment, which is generally a good thing safety-wise, but that fact doesn't break the tie between the two cars. On the other hand, if we'd like to consider vehicle mass in this context too, which we definitely should, the Italian car offers a potentially life-saving difference of 34% more metal.
Reliability is not the best thing to consider on the make level, but it is worth mentioning that both brands display similar results in faults and breakdowns, all the models observed together. That's the official data, while our visitors describe reliability of Volkswagen with an average rating of 4.2, and models under the Lancia badge with 4.1 out of 5. The same official information place Sharan as average reliability-wise, and Voyager is more or less at the same level. We should definitely mention that owners of cars with the same powertrain as the German car rank it on average as 4.2, while the one under the competitor's bonnet gets 4.5 out of 5.
Volkswagen is undoubtly more agile, reaching 100km/h in 2.1 seconds less than its competitor. In addition to that it accelerates all the way to 204 kilometers per hour, 11km/h more than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy an obvious choice would be the German car, averaging around 5.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (49 mpg), in combined cycle. That's 36% difference compared to the Italian car!
Volkswagen appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In my opinion, everything taken into account, the Italian car offers slightly better overall protection and takes the lead. From there things take a different direction, with Volkswagen being considerably quicker, thus putting more smile on driver's face. To make things even better, it consumps less fuel! All together, there's not much more to say, in this case I wouldn't even consider anything but Volkswagen. Anyway, that's the most objective conclusion I could've came up with and it's based solely on the information found on this website. Aspects such as design, practicality, brand value and driving experience are there for you to measure them out. In case you have two minutes to spare I invite you to define your needs, desires and budget and see which car would be chosen by the virtual adviser ™ , among thousands of similar, yet so different vehicles.

Ford galaxy and vw sharan in comparison test.
A ll questions that parent advisors can answer, seem to have taken care of the second child. There are many books out there about what changes when the second child arrives, but none of what happens with three or four children. Possibly because parents know what can be done to ensure that children sleep through the night (nothing), eat more vegetables (also nothing) or siblings don't argue (especially nothing). If you are three or more, it is more about practical things - setting up bunk beds /inserting partition walls /purchasing a van suitable for large families.
There are only two of these on this side of the buses such as Multivan or V-Class. Because recently the Renault Espace has reinvented itself as a crossover, the Voyager just went on its last journey as a Lancia. So remain VW Sharan, who appears gently ruffled at Seat as the Alhambra, and Ford Galaxy. While the VW Sharan is heading into an uncertain future after two generations and 26 years - the Touran XL could replace it in 2017 - there is now the third generation of the Ford Galaxy. It is based on the architecture of Mondeo and S-Max. The Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost differs from that again in more space and pragmatism.
The rich seven
The Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost comes with seven seats as standard. In row two, passengers have more leg room than in a Mercedes S-Class. The thinly padded, short-backed individual seats can be moved, tilted and folded separately. With the easy-entry function, the outer seats slide far forward to make climbing into the third row easier. Whereby there is the problem with the roller shutter. If you shook it out of the holder, it always tilts on the sides of the cargo space when you remove it. If the Trumm is finally outside, it will not go anywhere when the third row is set up. If K-QZ 6867 were our Galaxy, we would have left the roller blind at the first motorway parking lot.
But we were actually with the folding armchairs in the trunk of the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost, which are sometimes sufficient for adults despite the thin cushions. In addition, the seats can be optionally submerged at the push of a button, and are electrically positioned. It doesn't work that comfortably in the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI. Each of the three seats in the second row, which can also be moved, must be unlocked using a loop and then folded down. However, it is much more comfortable to sit on the cozy, much better contoured cushions -with equally lavish legroom. The third row costs 1,660 euros extra at VW, and it also offers adults acceptable space and comfort. In order for the seats to fold up, the basement of the cargo space must be cleared. A small factor that the van easily compensates for with the more practical sliding doors. In tight parking spaces, small children can be lifted into the seats and buckled up so much easier than in the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost with the wide conventional doors. In addition, the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI has Isofix anchors on all five rear seats, the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost only in row two.
Ford Galaxy with new touchscreen infotainment
Now that we've explored the back room, let's climb to the front, where it should be more comfortable in the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost due to the lush interior width - but not because of the narrow seats is. As with Focus, Mondeo and S-Max, the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost now also has the new touchscreen infotainment, which differs from the old jumble of buttons mainly because it is tricky and cumbersome in a different way. Unlike in the S-Max (test issue 25/2015), we were able to communicate with the voice control in the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost, but it is still difficult to configure adaptive dampers (2,000 euros) or the comprehensive assistance armada via the nested on-board computer and the steering wheel buttons .
During the gentle Sharan facelift last autumn, VW upgraded the range of assistance systems: The VW Sharan 1.4 TSI now has a city emergency braking system, adaptive cruise control and blind spot warning. This means that the van remains modern a good five years after its debut. The fact that it has matured over time is shown in the high-quality workmanship - on the other hand, the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost sometimes looks a little improvised, for example with this type of fishnet stocking that spans the spring of the folding mechanism of the seats, or with crookedly fitted covers. The VW Sharan 1.4 TSI also organizes operation more easily: It has lots of large storage spaces and the more comfortable seats at the front.
Shouldn't we drive off?
Yes, there was something, enough folded and cleared. Push a button and the engines start. It is the basic gasoline engines, reduced displacement, direct injection and turbo-charged, of course, that get started now. Let us immediately state that the fear of exuberant outbursts of temperament turns out to be unfounded for both when the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI and the 81 kilo heavier Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost set off towards 100 km /h. The 1.5-liter in the Ford sprints more powerfully thanks to its six mechanically precisely shiftable gears. The 1.400 in the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI runs more cultivated, its six-box switches more easily, but not as precisely.
In everyday life, the power of both engines is sufficient, but you pack the vans with the permitted 670 kilos each Load full, hardly remainPower reserves. At the latest when you stand at the gas pump again - which often happens because of the high consumption of 10 l for the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost and 8.9 l for the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI - you start to ponder. Namely about whether the additional investment of 2,550 (Ford) or 2,950 euros (VW) for the 150-hp diesel wouldn't have been worth it after all.
Both family vans with high consumption
The Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost can make the kilometers between refueling stops more enjoyable. Like the S-Max, it is no longer as agile as it was in the previous generation. However, this is less of a problem with the large Galaxy. On the other hand, it is all the more gratifying that it bounces diligently both empty and loaded, whereby the adaptive chassis is more successful in this than in its efforts to dynamize the handling. In 'Sport' mode, the dampers and steering tighten, then the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost springs more bumpily and steers more difficult. It hardly gets any more agile. In contrast, the slightly tightened 'Comfort' mode makes a fine compromise between comfort and handling. The Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboos curves through bends with a gentle side tilt, but with high precision in the steering, understeers later, pushes gently with the rear when load changes, always remains safe. And: It brakes perfectly.
And much better than the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI, which drives with more lateral inclination and less precision in the steering, but just as safely. With him, too, the adaptive damper (1,150 euros) in 'Sport' mode is more uncomfortable, but not faster. On 'Comfort' the VW Sharan 1.4 TSI springs fluffy empty, when loaded it appears underdamped, jostling hard over long and short bumps. In addition, adjusted for equipment, it costs around 3,200 euros more than the Ford Galaxy 1.5 Ecoboost. He wins and is our recommendation - for everyone who still needs advice.

Volkswagen Sharan vs. Volkswagen Touran: which is better?
Can't decide between Volkswagen's two large MPVs? Read more to find out if you're better-suited to the Sharan or Touran
If you’re in the market for a practical family car that suits active kids, camping holidays and that has lots of cabin space, then there’s nowhere else to look but these two Volkswagens.
The now-discontinued Volkswagen Sharan is larger than the Touran in every metric, but both serve a similar purpose for those who need large MPVs for dogs, people and luggage.
You can find both used Volkswagen options at great prices on the pre-owned market - especially handy for the discontinued Sharan.
But which should you consider? Read our helpful guide to see which suits you better.
If you’re expecting these to look like Lamborghinis, then you may need to rethink your next car (and budget) because MPVs aren’t famed for their good looks as they favour function and practicality over everything else.
What these two vehicles harness perfectly is the ‘boxy design life’, which Volkswagen has pulled off very well.
The best way to think of them is as elongated Volkswagen Golfs with taller roofs, and boots so large they make Peter Crouch’s shoes look tiny.
If you favour style, then the smaller Touran is probably the one for you because it’s been refined to be as sleek as possible without compromising on interior space.
It’s by far the more stylish of the two, but it can’t fit as much stuff inside.
What are they like to drive?
Families love the Sharan for one main reason: the driving. At first you may be intimidated by its size, but when you sit in the driver’s seat it doesn’t feel as large, offering a high driving position and plenty of visibility thanks to its boxy greenhouse design.
There are also some excellent petrol and diesel engines on offer, with economy figures ranging from 31.4-44.8mpg.
The Touran is very similar in many ways to the Sharan, but driving it is even easier because it’s shorter and narrower.
It can be had with either a petrol or diesel engine, but the latter has proven to be the more popular over the years, returning up to 53.3mpg.
Interior and technology
If you’ve spent any time in or around Volkswagen Golfs or Polos , then the two interiors of the Sharan and Touran won’t be anything drastically different.
But what makes them so appealing is the simplistic and clean nature of the buttons and touchscreens, making it easy for everyone to use.
If you don’t fancy learning Volkswagen’s own built-in infotainment system , then you can always hook up your smartphone and use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto , which work excellently.
Aside from that, you may also find some fancy added extras such as a panoramic sunroof, an improved sound system and even folding tables so those in the rear two rows can work or eat with ease while on the move.
Boot space and practicality
If there’s one thing you need to take away from this comparison, it’s that both cars are splendid for boot space and practicality .
The Sharan offers 300 litres of boot space, growing to a massive 2,297 litres when the rear rows are folded flat.
The smaller but still practical Touran gets 197 litres with all the seats up and an impressive 1,857 litres when all rear seats are folded flat.
When all seats are in place, both vehicles offer up to seven seats , meaning you can easily take your family or a bunch of mates on a camping trip or weekend away.
Even if there are taller passengers, they’ll have plenty of headroom, and legroom is good too considering each car can seat so many people.
Safety and reliability
MPVs aren’t small cars, and these two are no exception. Aside from practicality purposes, the size also helps with safety.
Following their most recent Euro NCAP crash tests, both cars scored 4/5 stars, which is more impressive as the test becomes stricter by the year.
This means both adult and children will be safe in the event of an accident – but let’s not even think about that.
When it comes to reliability , you shouldn’t have any major concerns with these two cars because they’re modern, German-built family MPVs that are made to last.
Their robust engines and impeccable build quality make them stand out from their rivals.

Verdict: Sharan vs Touran: which should you buy?
If you’ve read our comparison and are still unsure which MPV is best for you, then hopefully our short verdict will help guide you in the right direction.
Being the larger vehicle, the Volkswagen Sharan is ideal for the explorers among us – the kinds of people who go camping in the Lake District when it’s drizzling and those who take the whole family (plus dog) to the continent over a Bank Holiday weekend.
Best cars for dog owners
If you’re that person, then the Sharan is ideal for you. With either a petrol or diesel engine, we can’t see how this isn’t a great option.
However, if you just want something a little bit larger and lower than an SUV , the Touran is the one to pick.
It has the same qualities and features as its larger sibling, and you’re more likely to find a newer one on the used market as VW discontinued the Sharan in 2022.
Either way, you’re going to be ending up with a stellar vehicle that’s suitable for all the family including the dog, be it a chihuahua or a Great Dane.

This post will help you find out which car is better for camping – a Multivan vs Sharan? We are going to focus on their pros and cons related to camping (i.e. size, storage, convertibility into a bed), hence we’ll pay less attention to engine, speed or driving experience comparisons. Aren’t they a different class of cars? You can certainly say that. But when it comes to camping, they are often considered potential candidates – and this post will give you enough information to decide which one will work better for you.
For this comparison, we took a 2009 T5 Multivan Highline 2.5Tdi (SWB – standard length) and a Sharan MKII 2013 5-seater 1.9Tdi (yep, the one I converted here ).
Sharan vs Multivan size comparison – exterior
Comparison image source: carsized.com
As you can see, they are not too different in length – the Sharan is only 45cm (17.7 inches) shorter. The Multivan has one more trick up its sleeve – the front seats and the engine are aligned closer together (you sit diagonally above the engine), creating more room in the boot. The Sharan also does this, beating other MPVs in its class, but not enough to beat Multivan. Heightwise it’s a more significant difference – the Multivan is 27cm (about 10.6 inches) taller. The important question is whether or how can you use that additional room. We’ll get to that later. There is no difference in their exterior width.
Sharan vs Multivan size comparison – boot/interior
Sharan interior/boot dimensions
Multivan interior/boot dimensions
Sharan vs Multivan storage comparison
You’ll find more overall space in the Multivan thanks to its bigger size (between seats, at the back behind the last row of seats). But without a camping box kit or some DIY work it’s just space without shelves, so can get messy. Or you’ll have to dig through piles of stuff to find that one thing that’s at the bottom. In the front, Sharan offers more.
Sharan storage options
The Sharan offers great storage options in the front – aside from the standard passengers’ side glove compartment, there’s one in the middle/top of the dashboard, two cup holders, storage just below the armrest and two sunglass compartments above the head (fit smaller items like shades, keys, phone or a tablet), one smaller drawer below each seat. Total 7 compartments .
Multivan storage options
The Multivan offers similar but fewer storage options in the front – aside from the standard passengers’ side glove compartment, there’s one in the middle/top of the dashboard, two cup holders, and two smaller compartments for a phone or a bottle. No overhead storage. Total 5 compartments. The multifunctional table in the middle is often taken out for camping as it gets in the way. It’s more suited for a long journey where you don’t sleep and store all your tools in the boot. But with a suitable camping box that only fits in the boot, you can keep it in.
Electric sockets – 12V outlets
(all this depends on the model and year the car was made)
Sharan 12V outlets
There are at least 3 to 5 12V outlets in newer models plus there’s a 230V outlet too!! (EU style – might not be available in all models):
- one in the boot close to the trunk door (right-hand side)
- two between the front seats (one hidden away in the storage compartment, another next to the hand brake and another next to the gear stick on the front panel
- one 12V on the back of the middle panel where you’ll also find the 230V outlet too
Multivan 12V outlets
There are 3 12V outlets in the Multivan:
- one in the front dashboard
- 2nd on the side in the middle
- 3rd at the bottom of the boot
- there is no 230V outlet as far as I know

Multivan vs Sharan price comparison
Review summary table.
It would appear that Sharan is the winner if we go by the numbers only. But real life isn’t numbers only. Although Sharan scores better in more categories – not all categories are equal – it all depends on your preferences and top criteria:
- Is it size, versatility & looking cool ? Then the Multivan is for you (if you can afford it at twice the price of a Sharan) – it’s a cult car that offers a lot of space in a relatively small package, with the added bonus of being able to move and turn the seats and table around as you please + fold them down into a bed. But they can also get in a way + you’ll have to get some kind of camping box or a bed to sleep comfortably and make the most of the sheer space. The Multivan is a bit of a cult car and keeps its value even with very high mileage (300K+) and 10+ years of age, so be prepared to pay the price.
- Is it economy, comfort, and good size at a low price ? Then the Sharan is a great choice (or any similar alternatives, like the Caddy [see Sharan vs Caddy here ] or Berlingo). Here you’ll get the most bang for the lowest price. The Sharan is a perfect coming together of space, comfort, good consumption and low price. If you’re into stealth camping – the Sharan is much less conspicuous, being a standard family car, not a van mostly known for camping.
FALTBARE CAMPINGSCHAUFEL £19.99
