That’s our list of the most innovative new lightweight travel trailers of 2022. These small RV models are big on affordability, convenience, and amenities.

As a bonus, the features are packaged in a small camper footprint. In most cases, you won’t need to purchase a tow vehicle for these trailers. To find out how much weight your car can pull, open your vehicle’s manual. Look for the maximum trailer towing capacity and you’ll find the answer.

Why lightweight travel trailers are in demand

If you’re thinking about buying one of these lightweight travel trailers, you’re in good company. Demand for big and small RV models is soaring.

For example, according to the latest issue of RV RoadSigns , the quarterly sales forecast published by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), RV manufacturers are still scrambling to meet consumer demand that started in 2020. This year, more than 600,000 new RVs will be sold. These figures are all-time high that will exceed the record-breaking RV sales of 2021.

“The remarkable production from the RV manufacturers and suppliers is nothing like we have ever seen before, and our new forecast shows the record-breaking streak will continue,” said RVIA President and CEO Craig Kirby.

Editor’s note: RV manufacturer materials costs are constantly increasing. The current base costs for the small, light travel trailers on our list may have changed since the time of this writing (Q4 2021).

The Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers of 2024

lightest travel trailer with bunks

Bunkhouse floorplans are unique, providing more sleeping space than other floorplans. Families significantly benefit from bunk beds. Whether for grandparents taking their grandchildren on a weekend camping trip or a family heading cross-country , bunkhouses offer designated sleeping spaces for children.

These floorplans are also easier to manage. Instead of converting a dinette or sofa every night, kids can sleep soundly in comfortable beds. No one has to remove cushions or reattach a pedestal table for the day’s events.

A bunkhouse travel trailer is also an excellent option for people who want a more affordable towable RV. Fifth wheels are generally more expensive than travel trailers. So, if you’re a camping family with a limited budget, there are bunkhouse travel trailers to suit your needs.

You’ll notice that trailer models have abbreviations like FK, RK, BH, RL, and others. These letters indicate the type of floorplan. For example, FK or RK means “front kitchen” or “rear kitchen.” RL means “rear living.” If you’re searching for a bunkhouse unit, look for the letters BH. Ten of the twelve models we’ve listed below use this abbreviation. So, not all bunkhouse travel trailers will have the BH, but most do.

What Are The Best 2024 Bunkhouse Travel Trailers?

Couple searching for the best bunkhouse travel trailers at an RV Show

We’ve chosen 12 of the best bunkhouse travel trailer floorplans, ideal for campers looking for additional sleeping space. Whether you need double over double bunks for more than two children or single bunks to provide private sleeping spaces for one or two kids, we’re sure you’ll find a model you love in the list below.

Remember that bunkhouse travel trailer floorplans need room for bunk beds, which means the living space is usually smaller. Unless you’re willing to go long and heavy, you’ll have to sacrifice space in the kitchen, dining, and living areas to provide the individual sleeping space of bunk beds.

Here’s our list of the 12 best bunkhouse travel trailers of 2024:

Keystone Springdale Classic 1800BH

Keystone hideout sport 175bh, forest river campsite reserve 26cj, east to west longitude 285bh, forest river wolf den 16ev, heartland pioneer bh261, jayco jay flight slx 260bh, coleman lantern lt 18bh, forest river cherokee grey wolf 26dbh, jayco jay flight slx 174bh, forest river alpha wolf 26dbh-l, heartland mallard tailwind t265bh.

Five other models that narrowly missed our top 12 include the following:

  • Keystone Springdale Classic 1760BH
  • Heartland Mallard M26
  • Forest River Campsite Reserve 23LM
  • Jayco Jay Flight SLX 184BSW
  • Coleman Lantern LT 274BH

To make them easier for you to compare, we’ve separated them by RV manufacturer:

Keystone Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Keystone RV is a well-respected brand in the RV industry. Cole Davis founded Keystone in 1996. Since then, the company has worked its way to the top of the towable RV market. Today, there are over one million Keystone owners, making the brand the top manufacturer of towable RVs in North America. Currently, Keystone produces travel trailers, toy haulers, fifth wheels, and destination trailers.

Keystone Springdale Classic 1800BH

Travel Trailer Specs

  • Length: 20’6”
  • Dry Weight: 3,036 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,314 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 6

Why I Chose It: Compact, simple design

The Keystone Springdale Classic line offers single-axle travel trailers towable by light-duty vehicles. The 1800BH features a rear corner set of bunk beds next to a full bathroom. There’s a small kitchen equipped with a 3.3-cubic-foot 12-volt refrigerator, a microwave, a sink, and a two-burner gas range.

I love the simple design of this trailer. There are no slide-outs, which limits the interior space, but this also reduces potential repairs and overall wear-and-tear of these mechanisms. The kitchen and bathroom have everything you need to cook and clean without all the extras, making the Keystone Springdale 1800BH budget-friendly.

Across from the kitchen is a booth dinette with overhead storage for pots, flashlights, s’mores roasting sticks, and more. A queen bed sits in the front of the trailer. There’s more overhead storage for clothes and a closet to stow dirty laundry or hang jackets.

If you’re a family of three or four, this bunkhouse travel trailer floorplan is an excellent option since it gives each person a private sleeping area and a place for the family to gather at mealtime. You can also utilize the dinette for card games or rainy-day art activities.

  • Dry Weight: 3,020 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,330 pounds

The Keystone Hideout Sport 175BH also has the rear single over single bunk beds beside the bathroom. I love this layout – and the previous one – because of the kids’ easy access to the bathroom. The bathroom is just a foot away if there’s a nighttime emergency.

The refrigerator is half the size of the Classic unit’s, at 3.3 cubic feet, but the kitchen still has a microwave, two-burner cooktop, and sink. There’s also the booth dinette with overhead storage, the queen bed with shelf storage, and a closet. The Keystone Hideout Sport 175BH has a 10-foot powered awning, just like the Springdale Classic.

Like the Classic 1800BH, the Keystone Hideout Spot 175BH is an excellent option for a small family who just wants the basics. If you want an entry-level trailer with space to accommodate three or four people, this bunkhouse travel trailer may be perfect for your needs.

Forest River Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Forest River is one of the giants of the RV empire. The company not only has its line of travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, destination trailers, tent campers, and motorhomes, but it also owns other brands like Coachmen, Dynamax, Palomino, East to West, Prime Time, and Shasta.

If you’ve been to an RV show or walked around the campground, you’ve likely seen dozens of Forest River units. While narrowing down such a large selection is challenging, I’ve chosen four Forest River models to make the list of the top 12 best bunkhouse travel trailers in 2024.

  • Length: 32’9”
  • Dry Weight: 6,421 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,253 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 8

Why I Chose It: Ample storage

If you need a large travel trailer with a bunkhouse, the Forest River Campsite Reserve 26CJ is one of the most spacious options on my list. It features rear corner double over double bunk beds, so there’s room for each to sleep two kids. Beside the bunks is the full bathroom, again conveniently located near the kids for nighttime emergencies.

In the center of this bunkhouse travel trailer is a large slide-out with a booth dinette and sofa. The kitchen has an L-shaped countertop, providing plenty of room for meal prep. The front bedroom has a king bed, and the exterior features an outside TV mount and a small kitchen.

What I love most is the ample storage throughout the unit. There’s a cabinet next to the bunk beds for the kids’ clothing. There’s more storage underneath the bottom bunk for extra toilet paper or toys. Behind the entertainment center are hidden shelves for pantry storage, and there’s a separate pantry closet to help stow away pans and kitchen gadgets. In the front bedroom, there’s overhead storage and a closet. The Forest River Campsite Reserve 26CJ is full of storage options.

  • Length: 21’9”
  • Dry Weight: 2,995 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 2,498 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 5

Why I Chose It: Basic, no frills

The Forest River Wolf Den 16EV resembles the Keystone Hideout Sport and Springdale Classic. It’s a little over a foot longer but even more basic, as it boasts electric appliances only – hence the ‘EV’ in the name. This model has no stovetop, and you won’t have a propane furnace for extended-season camping. It does have a sink, a small refrigerator, and a microwave air fryer. The bathroom also doesn’t have a sink but only a shower and toilet.

There are rear corner single over single bunk beds and a queen bed up front. I like how the Wolf Den 16EV is a step up from a tent camper but doesn’t break the bank by offering too many unnecessary amenities. If you like simple camping, this model is ideal. There’s room for a family of three or four to sleep comfortably. The dinette is a bit small, but if you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll likely eat at the picnic table.

The Forest River Wolf Den 16EV is one of the lightest travel trailers on this list, perfect for campers without heavy-duty trucks. You can safely tow this bunkhouse trailer with an SUV, minivan, light-duty truck, and possibly a sedan. It’s a budget-friendly trailer for a family wanting to go outdoors for a weekend camping trip.

  • Length: 31’9”
  • Dry Weight: 5,795 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,930 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 9

Why I Chose It: Separate bedroom

I love that this Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf has a front bedroom separated from the rest of the unit. This gives parents or grandparents privacy you don’t find in some of the smaller travel trailer bunkhouses. The second entry in the bedroom also allows adults to enjoy an evening outside after the kids have gone to bed without worrying about waking them once they re-enter the trailer.

There are also double over double bunks near the rear corner bathroom. The booth dinette and sofa allow plenty of lounge space for family games or movie nights. The outside kitchen also provides another space for meal prep and an easy way to enjoy the outdoors.

  • Length: 31’8”
  • Dry Weight: 6,116 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,598 pounds

Why I Chose It: Upgrades for more comfort

The Forest River Alpha Wolf 26DBH-L is similar to the Cherokee Grey Wolf. It has double over double bunks, a U-shaped dinette, a sofa, a separate front bedroom, and an outdoor kitchen. What I love most about this unit are the extras that make this bunkhouse travel trailer feel more like a home on wheels.

An electric fireplace underneath the entertainment center provides added warmth on cool fall evenings. A porcelain toilet in the bathroom is more durable than the standard plastic one. Finally, the 20-foot awning offers ample shade to create more exterior living space. Plus, this travel trailer features a fiberglass exterior instead of the corrugated aluminum.

East to West Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Forest River, Inc. owns East to West. It’s one of the newest brands to hit the RV industry. Lisa Liegl Rees founded it in 2017, and the company currently manufactures travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class C motorhomes. It has a smaller lineup than other brands, with only six travel trailer lines, four fifth wheel lines, and two Class C lines.

  • Length: 33’9”
  • Dry Weight: 6,917 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity:
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 10

Why I Chose It: Double entry, true living room

The Longitude is brand new in 2024. The 285BH features double over double bunks and a full bathroom in the rear. One major reason it makes the list of best bunkhouse travel trailers is the separate entrance to the bathroom. This provides easy access for kids to wash up after playing outside and a place to drop dirty shoes without dragging mud through the trailer.

I also love the layout of this travel trailer’s living room. The sofa and dinette are on opposing sides, with the entertainment center in the middle. This makes the space feel homey, ideal for a family who enjoys watching TV or movies on a Friday night.

This bunkhouse travel trailer also features a front bedroom separate from the rest of the unit, providing privacy for the adults. There’s also an additional wardrobe in the East to West Longitude 285BH that the other models on this list don’t have.

Heartland Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Heartland has been in the RV industry for two decades. They manufacture models ranging from lightweight travel trailers to triple-axle toy haulers across 20 towable lines. The Landmark fifth wheel was its flagship trailer in 2004. You’ll find a wide range of price ranges to suit all types of budgets and various floorplans for all types of RVers.

  • Length: 31’6”
  • Dry Weight: 5,780 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,804 pounds

Why I Chose It: Spacious interior

The Heartland Pioneer BH261 is similar to a few other models on this list. It features the double over double bunks and a bathroom in the rear corner. It also has a second entrance directly into the bathroom, which I love. This Heartland Pioneer trailer also has a separate front bedroom.

The booth dinette and sofa are side by side in a large slide-out, and the kitchen is against the opposing wall. One thing I love about this layout that’s different from the other travel trailers with bunkhouses is that the kitchen isn’t an L-shape. The countertop doesn’t stick out into the living space, creating a very open, spacious area. The kids can play on the floor without hitting their heads on the countertop, and the dogs can roam around with plenty of space.

  • Length: 30’11”
  • Dry Weight: 5,640 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,954 pounds

Why I Chose It: Single entry, fiberglass exterior

This Heartland Mallard travel trailer is similar to the Pioneer bunkhouse. It also has double over double bunks next to the rear corner bathroom, a booth dinette and sofa in a large slide-out across from a full kitchen, and a separate front bedroom.

However, this unit doesn’t have a second entry in the bathroom. Some families will appreciate that because it’s not another door they have to lock and prevent younger children from escaping. The Mallard also features a fiberglass exterior, while the Pioneer is built with corrugated aluminum siding, giving this unit an upgraded feel.

Jayco Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Jayco is one of the most respected and well-known brands in the RV industry. Lloyd Bontrager founded the company in 1968 and debuted his innovative lifter system for pop up campers. Today, with over 55 years of experience and over a million units sold, Jayco is one of the leaders in the industry. The brand produces every class of travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, and motorhomes.

With the capability to sleep up to ten, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 260BH is a lightweight bunkhouse travel trailer with the space a large family needs to enjoy a weekend camping trip. The double over double bunks measure a  spacious 48” by 76”, and the jackknife sofa provides an additional sleeping area. Plus, the booth dinette also converts if you need another place to sleep.

With no slides, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 260BH may seem smaller than other units, but I love how Jayco designed this floorplan to create the most space possible. For example, there’s no sink in the bathroom. Instead, the kitchen sink is right outside the bathroom door. The countertop is small, but with the dinette table just across the room, parents can use it for an additional meal prep space if needed. And Jayco still provides a separate front bedroom for the adults.

  • Length: 21’8”
  • Dry Weight: 3,140 pounds
  • Cargo Capacity: 1,010 pounds

Why I Chose It: Compact, lightweight design

Another Jayco Jay Flight SLX model with bunks is the 174BH. What I love most about this travel trailer is the size. For a camping family who owns an SUV or a smaller vehicle, the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH checks all the boxes. With a dry weight of under 3,200 pounds and a length of under 22 feet, it’s light enough and short enough to be towed by smaller vehicles.

While you won’t have some amenities in other bunkhouse travel trailers, you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable, enjoyable weekend camping trip. The single bunks are 29” by 75” and are directly next to a bathroom with a shower and toilet. The only sink is in the kitchen, which includes an 8-cubic-foot refrigerator, a microwave, and a cooktop.

There’s a booth dinette for mealtime and a queen bed for the adults. The overhead storage throughout the unit also provides ample room for kitchen gadgets, clothes, blankets, flashlights, and other camping gear.

Coleman Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Coleman has been synonymous with camping and the outdoors for decades. Their lightweight bunkhouse travel trailers are some of the most affordable models on the market today, and the Keystone RV company actually manufactures them.

  • Length: 22’10”
  • Dry Weight: 3,587 pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity: Up to 7

Why I Chose It: Maximum space, no slides

This lightweight, single-axle travel trailer with bunkhouse has two 48” by 72” bunks in the rear corner next to a full bathroom, which features a walk-in shower. This unit also has a bathroom and kitchen sink, even with its smaller length. The booth dinette converts into another sleeping area and sits directly across from the kitchen, ideal for preparing meals.

I love the Murphy bed layout of this bunkhouse travel trailer because it allows for more family space during the day. While the similarly-sized Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH has a dinette and a set bedroom, the Coleman Lantern LT 18BH has both a dinette and sofa. You can lounge with the kids on the couch, but when it’s time to go to bed, the space quickly becomes a sleeping area for the adults. This Coleman travel trailer with bunkhouse maximizes the interior space, even without slide-outs.

FAQs About Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Keystone Springdale trailer driving on dirt road

You may have a few more questions to help you find the right bunkhouse travel trailer for your family. Here are the most popular questions about this type of floorplan.

What is a bunkhouse floorplan in a travel trailer?

A travel trailer is a towable RV. Some people call it a “bumper pull” because it attaches to a hitch on the tow vehicle’s bumper. A travel trailer can have many of the same amenities as a fifth wheel or motorhome.

While some RVs have a separate room for the kids to sleep, a bunkhouse doesn’t have to be separated from the rest of the interior space. If bunk beds are in the floorplan, then it’s considered a travel trailer with a bunkhouse, whether those bunks are open to the living area or closed off with a separate door. Check out these additional travel trailer floorplans that offer ample space for a camping family.

What is the most popular travel trailer length?

Generally, a travel trailer with a bunkhouse will be longer than a travel trailer without bunks because it’s necessary to add length to incorporate this additional sleeping space. However, some manufacturers take away a feature to keep the length short. For example, a bunkhouse model may only have a dinette instead of a dinette and a sofa, so there’s room for the bunks in the same interior space.

Travel trailers can range from 12 feet to 40 feet long. They vary significantly in size and weight because there are many different floorplans. The average bunkhouse travel trailers are 20-30 feet long, but floorplans with a separate rear bunkhouse will be longer. It’s also important to know your local regulations regarding RV length so you follow the road restrictions in your home state.

What size is a double bunk in a travel trailer?

I mentioned that some of these best bunkhouse travel trailers feature double over double bunks. Usually, these bunks measure around 48” wide by 76” long. For older kids, these bunks may only sleep one. But for younger children, families can take advantage of these oversized bunks and sleep two per bed. I encourage you to learn more about RV mattresses , their sizes, how they differ from residential mattresses, and the different types we offer at Camping World.

Does Airstream make a bunkhouse?

Airstream is well-known as one of the top brands in the RV industry. The company has been making trailers since the 1930s. However, Airstream only manufactures one floorplan with a bunk bed option: the Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk . This 31-footer sleeps up to eight or nine people, depending on if you have the single over double bunk or the double over double bunk option.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are excellent units for camping families. Whether you’re a grandparent who takes out your grandchildren occasionally, a full-time traveling family who needs personal space for everyone, or a single parent who wants to make memories with your child on weekend getaways, there’s a floorplan to suit your camping style and needs.

This article claims the Springdale Classic has a 7.7 cu refrigerator and a 14 ft awning. In all the searching on Camping World inventory I have yet to find a unit with this. I only see 3.3 frig and 10 ft awning.

' src=

Hi Michael!

My apologies, as I just reached out to Keystone and they confirmed that 3.3-cubic feet is the standard fridge size for the 2024 model year, down from the 7.7 cubic foot standard in the 2023 model year. They also confirmed that the 10-foot awning is now standard on new models. Thanks for bringing this to our attention so we could update these specs in the article!

The Best 15 Travel Trailers with Bunk Beds

Sharing is caring!

Travel trailers with bunk beds are true blessings when you have kids, a large family, friends within your RV circles, or just enjoy entertaining guests. And, if you’re concerned about space, the RV industry knows a thing or two about space conservation and innovative, roomy designs.

Bunk beds provide RVers with a larger degree of freedom. When sleeping arrangements are adequate and you don’t have to toss pillows down on the floor or tell guests they’ll have to get a motel, planning is far more convenient.

Of course, not every travel trailer is created equally. So we scrounged around and compiled some of the best options, large and small, available on the RV market. So, if you’re sick of feeling smothered by kiddos sharing your bed, check out our choice of best travel trailers with bunk beds!

1. Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk

Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk Exterior

Our Pros And Cons

✅ Prewired ‘Airstream Connect’

⛔ The TV isn’t in the best location for comfortable viewing

  • Length: 23′ 9″
  • UVW: 5,000 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,000 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 500 lbs

This bunk floor design is different from the Airstream Flying Cloud 30 FB Office (which is excellent in its own right). Families will love this floor layout. It’s been popular with families for the past few years. Even before the office space layout came out.

You can choose between the Sunlit Maple with Carolina Clay or the Sunlit Maple with Seattle Mist interior aesthetics. ‘Sunlit’ Maple is a popular wood color with Airstream, though the clay and mist variations are nice and complement cushion color tones.

The huge, U-shaped dinette really stands out and is the perfect size for a traveling family. You also have the jackknife sofa for more leisure on a hot afternoon. There’s a solid amount of counter space and a ton of large overhead storage compartments.

The iconic, classic Airstream aesthetic is prevalent, inside and out, with gleaming, shiny aluminum juxtaposed against light, maple woodwork. It’s a nice look, and the amenities throughout are more than enough to accommodate a large family.

2. Coachmen Catalina Summit Series 8 261BH

Coachmen Catalina Summit Series 8 261BH Exterior

✅ Large, double-bed bunks for big sleepovers

⛔ Counter space is a little limited

  • Length: 30′ 1″
  • UVW: 4,822 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,400 lbs
  • CCC: 1,578 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 515 lbs

The Coachmen RV Catalina Summit Series 8 261BH is very family-friendly. It takes more than bunk beds to make a great RV space for families, and the Catalina does a fantastic job down to the tiniest details. For instance, the sofa has flip-down cup holders so you can lay back and relax or keep the kiddos from spilling their Kool-Aid on the sofa.

Besides, what family doesn’t appreciate fully customizable LED lights on a 15’ electric awning? The 261BH includes a full bathroom, which is nearly a necessity if you have kids along for the ride or frequently host guests.

As far as traveling goes, the leaf-spring suspension isn’t known for being the best but it’s more than adequate. However, the self-adjusting brakes are a welcome addition for those who spend a lot of time on the road. There are five packages to choose from, including one which features interior touch lighting!

3. Cruiser RV Radiance R-28QD

Cruiser RV Radiance R-28QD Exterior

✅ This bad boy sleeps up to 9!

⛔ Vent fan is on the smallish side and could use an upgrade

  • Length: 33′ 4″
  • UVW: 6,680 lbs
  • GVWR: 9,634 lbs
  • CCC: 2,922 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 834 lbs

The Cruiser Radiance R-28QD is all about privacy, featuring a private master bedroom and a private bunkhouse. That’s not the end of the features by any means. For a travel trailer that sleeps 9, accommodations must be made, including a tri-fold sofa, four bunks , and a king in the master bedroom.

Obviously, that’s a lot of people under one roof, so Cruiser took an interesting tack. Instead of a traditional dinette adjacent to the galley, the R-28QD dinette is integrated with a part of the bunkhouse. As you can see on the floorplan, the camp side bunk is over the top of a portion of the dinette.

This does wonders for opening up space in the center area of the RV. The Cruise Radiance also features a full bath, adequate counter space, and a sliding king bed. That’s right, a sliding king gives you some leeway to open up one side of the master bedroom or the other.

A full belly storage system and plenty of cabinets, nooks, and crannies offer plenty of storage capacity for a large group on the road.

4. East to West Della Terra 291BH

East to West Della Terra 291BH Exterior

✅ Fantastic bunkroom design with complete privacy

⛔ Bunkroom and kitchen windows are very small

  • Length: 37′ 8″
  • UVW: 8,328 lbs
  • GVWR: 9,990 lbs
  • CCC: 1,662 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,190 lbs

East to West’s Della Terra 291BH manages to pack in bunk beds, space for sleeping up to eight, and a king bed while still remaining a spacious RV overall. With a full bathroom and a radius shower, there’s plenty to accommodate a large family and a feeling of spacious luxury for couples.

The sliding door leading into the bunkhouse is one of those tiny little details that makes a huge difference in space-saving design. The oversized booth dinette and jack knife sofa mean plenty of room for a boy scout eggs and pancakes feast in the mornings.

The Bluetooth and HDMI connectivity always goes over well with kids, and there’s plenty of ceiling height (81”) for taller adults. If you’re traveling through Minnesota in January, the heated, anti-puncture underbelly comes in handy.

One of the lower bunks is a queen that folds into a sofa, so the kid’s or guest room can quickly convert into an alternative entertainment pad.

5. Forest River R-Pod RP-193

Forest River R Pod RP 193 Exterior

✅ A ton of storage for a travel trailer this size

⛔ Sink is outside the bathroom

  • Length: 22′ 2″
  • UVW: 4,059 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,317 lbs
  • CCC: 1,258 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 447 lbs

It’s a rare travel trailer and tear-drop hybrid that comes along, with plenty of space for families or groups. This little ‘R-Pod that could’ manages to do an awful lot in a small amount of space. Only 22’ in length, the RP-193 features a queen Murphy bed, a large bathroom, and twin bunks.

Once the Murphy bed is folded back, the sofa has enough seating room for five if you want to scrunch or enough room for a couple and a very large, space-hogging doggy. The refrigerator is adequate at 6 ft³, and there is a surprising amount of ‘move-around-the-house’ space.

Storage space is also emphasized in the RP-193, with a ton of interior storage options to pack away enough supplies, gear, and luggage for moderate family sizes. Forest River seemed to have anticipated heavy cooking smells in a small space.

Instead of sticking with the status quo, they offer an optional outdoor griddle. Of course, if you like filling your R-Pod up with the smell of bacon, you can still cook indoors.

6. Grand Design Reflection 312BHTS

Grand Design Reflection 312BHTS Exterior

✅ Tankless water heater saves water for large families

⛔ Leaf spring suspension is a bit bumpy

  • Length: 37′ 4″
  • UVW: 9,432 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,295 lbs
  • CCC: 1,863 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,044 lbs

It’s always a good idea to follow up a 22’ travel trailer with a 37’+ monster and, with that being said, we arrive at the Grand Design Reflection 312BHTS .  The 312BHTS is nearly 5 tons dry, a pretty sizeable (understatement) travel trailer for a traditional hitch and go.

It’s also one of Grand Design’s top models, so it features the accompanying luxuries and accommodations you would expect in a behemoth. Seeing as you can cram a lot of people in here, the tankless hot water heater comes in very handy. You don’t have to waste water waiting on it to heat up.

The bunk room is fantastic for kids and guests but can easily flip into a fine office or study—even a room with enough space to practice your favorite hobby. If you want to turn it into a gaming center with consoles, smart TVs, or projectors, go for it.

The 312BHTS features a fully loaded outdoor kitchen for family gatherings and cookouts with a dual burner, sink, and mini-fridge.

7. Gulf Stream Envision Signature Series 18RBD

Gulf Stream Envision Signature Series 18RBD Exterior

✅ Features a full, private bath in a small package!

⛔ Only pre-wired for an A/C unit

  • Length: 21′ 1″
  • UVW: 3,160 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,900 lbs
  • CCC: 740 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 320 lbs

The Gulf Stream Envision Signature Series 18RBD features several family-friendly accommodations. Even smaller than the R-Pod, the 18RBD features a full bath, bunks, and a full-size bed. All these are loaded with storage options, whether in the overhead or in the pass-through.

It’s also incredibly easy to set up, with four manual stabilizer jacks. As small as it is, it’s nothing to level and set up once you’re parked. However, you’ll need to keep your eyes open on the market for an A/C since the Envision only comes pre-wired for an A/C unit. Not all RV dealers order A/C units that are optional.

There are a total of three wardrobes, a tub/shower, and a sizeable refrigerator round out the surprising number of campground luxuries Gulf Stream managed to cram in. The dinette is more than adequate for a family of four, and there’s enough living space to add in a foldout chair or two for company.

8. Heartland Prowler 335SBH

Heartland Prowler 335SBH Exterior

✅ Huge living space with plenty of seating

⛔ TV location catches glare from widows to either side

  • UVW: 8,830 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,380 lbs
  • CCC: 2,518 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,180 lbs

The triple slide Heartland Prowler 335SBH is a loaded powerhouse for families looking for a roomy, accommodating travel trailer. Heartland is all about ‘largesse’ in its 335SBH model, including a double-door fridge, a long, U-shaped dinette, and a king bed slide-out.

With triple slides, the 335SBH transforms into a highly spacious interior, with large closets, plenty of walking space in the living area, a sofa, and all stainless steel appliances. Outside living is on the menu as well, with a 20’ power awning and a fully loaded, exterior kitchen.

Lighting makes a huge difference, in terms of roomy aesthetics, and the panorama windows make a large living space look even larger. If the kiddos are outside playing, you’ll be able to keep them in the corner of your eye no matter what you’re doing.

For those who use their smartphones as an additional appendage, there are USB charging ports everywhere in this large and comfortable travel trailer. With a completely closed-off bunkhouse and a sizeable room to boot, you have a number of customization options, whether you want a playroom in there or a large entertainment and gaming center.

9. Keystone Bullet 250BHS

Keystone Bullet 250BHS Exterior

✅ It has a laundry chute!

⛔ The TV space is a bit small

  • Length: 29′ 5″
  • UVW: 5,748′
  • GVWR: 7,400 lbs
  • CCC: 1,652 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 715 lbs

Of all the nice things you will find in a Keystone Bullet 250BHS (double-size bunks with one that flips up, bedroom privacy, a 19’ electric awning, exterior kitchen, a large, U-shaped dinette,  bunk beds), the laundry chute is the most amazing. That’s right. The Keystone Bullet 350BHS has a laundry chute.

It also has some extra, L-shaped counter space and a large, 10 ft³ refrigerator. For an ‘ultra-lightweight’ RV, it certainly lacks the feel of it. Even the queen bed in the master bedroom leaves enough ‘walk-around’ space.

Pass-through storage is pretty much a standard feature nowadays, but it’s always good to mention it, especially for those who are traveling with a large enough family to merit the extra storage options.

Sure, the kitchen sink is only a single-basin affair, but it’s also huge and stainless steel! To top everything off, there’s a laundry chute.

10. KZ Sportsmen SE 332BHKSE

KZ Sportsmen SE 332BHKSE Exterior

✅ Tough Shield Exterior and Tufflex roofing

⛔ Bathroom door interferes with the bunk house entrance

  • Length: 37′ 3″
  • UVW: 7,390 lbs
  • GVWR: 8,800 lbs
  • CCC: 1,410 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 930 lbs

It’s an up-and-down, rollercoaster ride with our picks, small to huge, light to heavy. Now, we’re back to large and heavy with the 37’ 3”, three-and-a-half ton LZ Sportsmen SE 332BHKSE . Don’t you just love those long acronyms with three or more digits?

With two bunk beds (one has a Jiffy Sofa on the bottom), an 80” U-shaped dinette, a queen-sized bed in the master bedroom, and a bench seat, there are plenty of rest and relaxation spots for a pretty crowded affair.

KZ is really pushing its Tough-Shield exteriors and Tufflex roofing, both of which are fantastic in terms of durability and longevity. Speaking of technology, the RV Airflow system is fairly impressive on its own, and it will keep the entire trailer cool no matter how many are crowded inside.

There is plenty of storage space as well, with large cabinets throughout, along with pass-through storage (which still retains its obligatory mention even when we’re 10 travel trailers in). Overall, this is an excellent choice for large families.

11. Northwood Nash 29S

Northwood Nash 29S Exterior

✅ Entry door to bathroom keeps the camper cleaner

⛔ Only has one A/C unit

  • Length: 32′ 4″
  • UVW: 6,564 lbs
  • GVWR: 10,700 lbs
  • CCC: 6,564 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 796 lbs

It’s nice to see a simple, three-character name—29S—for our next travel trailer with bunk beds option. The Northwood Nash 29S has a strong, home-feeling, warm aesthetic going for it, something you immediately notice when walking in either of the two entryways.

If you’re kids like plenty of bed space, the double-over-double is more than enough. Also, if you’re having adult guests over, they’ll appreciate the larger real estate they get to lay on. In case you need more sleeping room, the 85” dinette converts into a bed as well.

Both the dinette and the jack knife sofa take up the camp-side slide out and, across from them, you have the galley area with a good deal of counter space and a three-burner stove. The queen-size bed leaves plenty of space to move about, with two, extra deep wardrobes for all your finer clothes.

Back to the bunk beds, the lower bed is hinged, so you can easily move it out of the way and make yourself some office space or give the little ones a little more playroom throughout the day. It even works as an office if you have the extra table and chair to bring in there.

12. Palomino Puma 32BH2B

Palomino Puma 32BH2B Exterior

✅ Features two, full bathrooms

⛔ Walking space is a little more limited with a kitchen island

  • Length: 38′ 6″
  • UVW: 9,023 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,230 lbs
  • CCC: 2,207 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,030 lbs

The Palomino Puma 32BH2B is another largish travel trailer on our illustrious, magnificent travel trailers with bunk beds article. It’s pretty awesome too. Palomino sacrificed a bit of living space by opting for a kitchen island but the island is too nice to gripe much, if at all.

It features a dual-basin sink, with outlets on one end and a curving, detachable faucet head for easy rinsing and washing. But, that’s not the star of the show. Aside from the unique layout of the bunkhouse, this Puma has two, full bathrooms!

One is completely enclosed in the private bunkhouse so the kids can have their own bathroom, all to themselves. There’s also a load of storage, especially with the pass-through storage and a separate storage compartment on the exterior.

The bunkhouse is essentially a room unto itself—more than just a spot to sleep and nothing more. It features steps leading up to one of the bunks, with the steps uniquely entangled with a storage closet. The standing space and wall allow room for some customization and a wall-mounted TV.

13. Prime Time Tracer 200BHSLE

Prime Time Tracer 200BHSLE Exterior

✅ Over 3,000 lbs of cargo carrying capacity

⛔ It might be a little packed for more than a small family

  • Length: 24′ 11″
  • UVW: 4,128 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,450 lbs
  • CCC: 3,322 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

The Prime Time Tracer 200BHSLE is another fantastic option. As travel trailers with bunk beds go, it stands up under scrutiny. This is especially true when you consider the goal of Prime Time was to manufacture a roomy travel trailer with bunk beds at a reasonable price.

They did just that. The 200BHSLE features a double over double and plenty of space for a travel trailer with no slides. Some things are packed in a little tight but it still features a full bathroom, a queen with dual-opposing wardrobes, and a sizeable dinette.

You can take your adventures outside as well, with a 17’ awning providing plenty of shade. In order to drive down cost, there is no exterior kitchen but you can pack plenty with over 3,000 lbs of cargo carrying capacity. It’s also a solid travel trailer in the winter, with an enclosed underbelly that’s heated.

The full bathroom is roomy enough that you can do more than just spin in a 360° circle, with enough room in the shower to make cleaning up plenty comfortable. This is a rock-solid travel trailer with bunk beds—affordable, with limited ‘extra options’ and everything you would expect from its class.

14. Rockwood Signature 8336BH

Rockwood Signature 8336BH Exterior

✅ Two refrigerators—one in the bunkhouse and one in the kitchen

⛔ Awning is a bit on the small side at 11′

  • Length: 36′ 8″
  • UVW: 9,669 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,320 lbs
  • CCC: 1,651 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,320 lbs

Forest River is back on the list with an ultra-light offering otherwise known as the Rockwood Signature Ultra Light 8336BH. This is also another RV that features a kitchen island. The King-U dinette is as large and comfortable as it sounds, and it sits next to a 60” sofa for plenty of seating options.

The queen bed is a part of the forward, camp-side slide-out, allowing for some much-needed space in the master bedroom. Across the way is a sizeable wardrobe that also features a washer and dryer hook-up . Of course, if you install a washer and dryer, it eats up some of that space.

The awning is on the small side, only 11’, and a part of the central slide-out. However, its location is right next to the exterior kitchen, so it works out in the end. This is also the perfect RV for keeping the kids out of the refrigerator and away from your favorite snacks.

That’s because there is a second fridge in the bunkhouse, beneath the 42” x 72” bunk. Prepare to load up on icicle pops! There’s also plenty of extra space in the bunkhouse so if you want to turn it into a second entertainment center or a large office, the possibilities are endless.

15. Wayfinder RV Go Play 26BH

Wayfinder RV Go Play 26BH Exterior

✅ L-shape living space is designed to accommodate everyone

⛔ Due to an affordability focus, it lacks add-ons and extra options

  • Length: 29′ 6″
  • UVW: 4,740 lbs
  • GVWR: 6,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,760 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 615 lbs

Last but not least on our travel trailers with bunk beds (it’s the best article on the subject by the way) rundown, is the Wayfinder RV Go Play 26BH. This is another bunk bed offer that is built with affordability in mind, without losing out on the primary features of a nice travel trailer for families.

The L-shaped living space is fairly roomy and is designed to keep everyone from being right on top of each other, even if the whole family is hanging out inside. The dinette folds out into a bed for additional sleeping space and the jack-knife sofa provides even more sitting space for large groups.

If you have kids along for the ride, they’ll be happy to know that the sound system within features Bluetooth, so they can catch stream their favorite tunes without plugging in. The kitchen is fairly sizeable, with moderate counter space and plenty of cabinetry for a fully stocked galley.

The split bathroom actually works out great for a family, allowing you to wash your hands without having to wait for one of the kids to finish up.

It certainly helps that the Wayfinder is one of the most affordably priced travel trailers in its class. If you’re looking for a great travel trailer with bunk beds but don’t need all of the excess, it’s the perfect choice.

How Much Weight Can An RV Bunk Bed Hold?

Generally speaking, an RV bunk bed holds anywhere between 200 lbs and 400 lbs. The specs should be in the RV owner’s manual. It’s worth checking out if the kiddos are planning a slumber party, and there might be two or three hanging out on a bed at a time.

If you have kids, you’re probably familiar with what they can do to a poor bed mattress in short order. This is especially true when they confuse their bed with a trampoline.

Can Adults Sleep In RV Bunk Beds?

For the most part, adults can sleep in RV bunk beds without an issue. The only potential drawback would be height. Bunk beds are usually twins or doubles in terms of size, so someone taller than 6’ might not find it the most comfortable experience.

If you’re tall and sleep curled up, it might be okay for a night or two. Just don’t attempt to stretch out in the middle of the night. Human heads versus walls is mostly a one-sided battle that no one should fight at two o’clock in the morning.

How Can I Make Camper Bunks More Comfortable?

You can make a camper bunk more comfortable by adding mattress toppers or simply changing the mattress to another brand. Most mattress companies manufacture RV mattresses, so you shouldn’t have any trouble tracking down what you want.

Tochta is a popular brand within the RV industry , as well as a few others. One of the benefits Tochta offers RV customers is the opportunity to ‘custom build’ their own mattresses. This includes the mattress size, choice of sheets, mattress protectors, whether or not you want it hinged, and the option to add moisture barrier technology.

For those of us who need a very specific mattress type (it’s also fantastic to have choices when one of your children deals with eczema or gets heat hives), a custom order is the way to go.

4 FAQs On Travel Trailers with Bunk Beds

1. what is a quad-bunk rv called.

They are called bunkhouses. Sure, the term gets thrown around for any RV that has bunkbeds, whether it’s two or four beds total. However, the correct terminology for a quad-bed travel trailer is a bunkhouse. The two-bed versions are just travel trailers with bunk beds.

2. What size are RV bunk beds?

For the most part, RV bunk bed sizes are twins or full-size beds. However, keep in mind there are often disparities between RV bed sizes and residential bed sizes. If you’re RV shopping and need to know, bring a tape measure along or break out the owner’s manual.

3. How do you make sheets fit an RV mattress?

The aforementioned disparity in bed sizes mentioned above is a problem when it comes to buying sheets. Your best bet is to purchase your sheets from camping and online stores with an RV focus.

4. Is it legal to sleep in bed while the RV is moving?

Not in a travel trailer. It may be legal in any type of motorhome, however, it’s a matter of law in the state you’re traveling through or live in. Check your state’s seatbelt laws to find out for sure (in motorhomes, of course), but avoid sleeping in a travel trailer bed while on the move.

If you’ve been shopping for a new travel trailer with bunkhouse features, you’re in the right place. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available so you and your family can hit the road in style.

But what exactly is a bunkhouse travel trailer, and what should you consider when shopping for a new one? Let’s learn more about this unique style of travel trailer so you can get your questions answered.

Already know you want a bunkhouse travel trailer?

Check out the table of contents below to jump ahead and see all of our favorites:

What Is A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

A bunkhouse travel trailer essentially means you are purchasing a style of trailer with bunk beds inside. Bunkhouse travel trailers also imply secondary living space, where bunk beds and couches create a unique second living space inside the RV.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are often larger than traditional travel trailers, given the need for extra sleeping space. These types of RVs are perfect for large families or groups of people, especially those with younger children comfortable with bunk bed sleeping arrangements.

However, you may be interested in a bunkhouse travel trailer whether or not you have kids. They often have unique layouts and ample living space you wouldn’t normally get in a standard travel trailer layout. Some bunkhouse travel trailers even have two bathrooms, which I find a game-changer when multiple people are camping on board!

What To Consider In A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

Wondering what you should consider in a bunkhouse travel trailer? Here are some expert tips and pointers to keep in mind while you shop for your new RV.

Sleeping Arrangements

The most important consideration for your new bunkhouse travel trailer is knowing how many people can sleep in it, and how many people on average you expect to travel with.  Bunkhouse travel trailers truly maximize sleeping arrangements, and some RVs can even have bunk beds that are three beds tall!

You’re most likely interested in this style of travel trailer because of its high sleep capacity.  However, when an RV tells you how many people can sleep inside, this doesn’t mean everyone is sleeping comfortably. If you plan on traveling with more adults than kids, you should make sure the sleeping arrangements suit everyone accordingly.

Number Of Bathrooms

Traveling with a large group of people may mean you need multiple bathrooms in your bunkhouse travel trailer. Thankfully, this is a common request and most RV manufacturers have already planned for this when designing the layout of bunkhouse rigs. One bathroom is standard in just about any travel trailer unless you are shopping around for a smaller model with only a wet bath or no bathroom at all.

However, many large travel trailers or fifth wheels offer multiple bathroom situations.  You may not get a full secondary bath, but a half-bath onboard is possible, which typically includes a sink and an additional toilet. Sometimes, this is all you need when camping with a group of people or family members.

Style And Overall Aesthetics

Bunkhouses are fun for the whole family, especially when you consider both the interior and exterior style and look of the trailer. While most RVs have a special sort of ugly style to them , you may find a bunkhouse that makes you feel cool.

Many travel trailers have multiple interior design options, and you can further customize your look and feel with your own personal touches. There’s nothing better than an RV living area that feels lived-in rather than brand new and sterile.

Bunkhouse Layout

The layout of your travel trailer is key no matter what style of rig you’re looking at, but this is especially the case with bunkhouse travel trailers. After all, the layout will be greatly affected by large bunkhouse living areas. Many travel trailers situate the bunk room toward the back of the travel trailer to allow further privacy and separation from other parts of the rig.

This can be especially valuable if you plan on traveling with a large group of children, as they can have their own space.  However, no two travel trailers are the same, and you should make sure the layout works best for you and your family as well as any additional guests. Privacy is key for a bunkhouse travel trailer, but it’s wise to pay attention to the other living areas as well.

Total Length

Bunkhouse travel trailers can get pretty large, which is why you should pay attention to the overall length of your new rig. While the extra square footage may be necessary to allow everyone to come along on vacation, you may be surprised to hear that the length of your rig matters.

Many national and state parks have RV length rules or limits in place depending on the location and style of the park. This could be a wake-up call for those of you with rigs over 35 feet long- and most bunkhouse rigs are this large.  However, these rules are different from park to park, and your bunkhouse travel trailer may do just fine on your travels. I find it’s always a good idea to call ahead before making reservations at campgrounds.

Weight

As previously mentioned, most bunkhouse travel trailers are mighty big. This means it’s vital to pay close attention to various travel trailer weights and the overall weight limit of your tow vehicle for optimum safety. Y ou should never shop for a brand-new rig without first knowing what tow vehicle you plan on using and how much weight it can carry.

Since travel trailers are lighter than ever these days, you may be surprised how heavy some of these rigs actually are. Your tow vehicle may be able to handle the RV model you’re looking at, no problem. If not, it’s best to upgrade your tow vehicle or look at more compact, lightweight travel trailer options.

Budget

Finally, the last thing you should consider when shopping for a new travel trailer, bunkhouse or otherwise, is your budget. Travel trailers can vary widely in their cost, depending on amenities and the overall luxury of the rig.

You can easily create a budget and anticipate spending, but be sure to take a look at any non-standard features or options you can install on your new travel trailer. Many optional features are considered necessary by RVers, such as auto leveling and solar panels, but they will increase the overall expense substantially.

Benefits Of A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer

Curious to learn more about bunkhouse travel trailers? Here is a list of some potential benefits opting for a bunkhouse travel trailer can bring. Remember, it may be worth considering purchasing a good-quality used RV if you’re on a tight budget. My rig was an absolute steal secondhand, and I don’t regret a single thing about not buying a brand-new rig!

Many Different Layouts

After years of looking at different RV layouts and setups, bunkhouse travel trailers have some of the most unique ones I’ve ever seen. This is likely due to the creativity involved when adding an additional sleeping area.

You can expect a lot of unique features while shopping for bunkhouse travel trailers, and it may make these rigs appealing to you if you hadn’t considered this style of travel trailer before. It’s definitely worth looking at these travel trailers for this reason alone!

Room For The Whole Family

One of the main reasons many people choose a bunkhouse travel trailer is because they have room for the whole family, or perhaps room for an entire group of friends. These travel trailers maximize sleeping arrangements so you can bring as many people along as possible.

Again, this may not be ideal for a group of adults, especially those not expecting to share a room. However, that’s partially what camping is about, and bunkhouse travel trailers still ensure everyone is comfortable, even if they are sharing a bunk bed.

Space Saving Bunks

Speaking of sleeping arrangements, bunkhouses are designed with space-saving bunk beds so you can maximize both the guest sleeping arrangements and the overall storage space. Even if you don’t plan on feeling every single bunk bed onboard your new travel trailer, you still have ample bunks to use for storage or other purposes. You won’t have to worry about leaving anything at home if you buy one of these rigs!

Ample Storage For Cargo

Whether you plan on using the bunk beds for storage or require storage elsewhere, bunkhouse travel trailers give you tons of storage, both inside and out. This can be incredibly beneficial, especially when traveling with large groups of people who will each have their own belongings.

While a bunkhouse-style travel trailer may not be a first choice if you plan on living full-time in your rig , you may find this layout works well for you in terms of having enough room for clothes, personal effects, food storage, and more.

Extra RV Amenities

Even the most basic of bunkhouse travel trailers have a decent amount of RV amenities that you may not initially expect. If you’re able to purchase a more luxury travel trailer, then expect even more amenities than a simpler, budget-friendly model.

For example, you can expect plush mattresses, additional entertainment centers, at least a 50 amp RV service, and much more with just about any bunkhouse trailer purchase. The main living area may have theater seating, and your dining area may also be upgraded to accommodate additional people.

The list doesn’t stop there, but it will depend on the individual travel trailer you’re looking at for what sort of amenities you’ll receive. If you have something specific in mind, the RV manufacturer will no doubt tell you whether or not it’s possible.

Privacy From The Kids

Many RVers purchase bunkhouse travel trailers so they have ample space for the kids to hang out in. This gives adults privacy, and also some separation from their children while everyone is hanging out inside the rig.

While you can always just send the kids outside, this isn’t always an option, especially when camping in inclement weather. A bunkhouse travel trailer can make camping trips all the more restful and peaceful with a dedicated space for the kids!

10 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Ready to take a look at some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available on the market today? Here are our top seven choices, full of information so you can make an informed decision and get started on your RVing journey!

Best Overall: Forest River Heritage Glen

Forest River makes some fantastic rigs, and the Heritage Glen is no exception. Available in both a hyper-lyte and classic trailer model with various floorplans, it’s easy to find a Heritage Glen to suit every RVer out there! Five of the multiple floorplans feature innovative bunkhouse arrangements, which is not only impressive but rarely found in the travel trailer world!

No one has to feel left out, as Forest River has made it effortless for the whole family to jump on board. The Heritage Glen is c hock full of features, some of which include high-quality herringbone-style vinyl flooring, hardwood cabinetry, and an actual porcelain toilet. Yes, I’m honestly not kidding! This is a trailer with a perfect blend of functionality and luxury, which is what I want, living full-time on the road.

This travel trailer is built with opulence in mind from start to finish. The bunkhouse models on this rig have double-bed stackable bunks, providing sleeping areas for several people – some models have two sets of bunk beds!  This particular rig is built wider to accommodate the extra bunks, as well as also being equipped with extra large pass-through storage compartments. This may make the Wildwood Heritage Glen a little trickier to drive , but any nerves will be obliterated after a few drives!

Not only is this travel trailer built with gorgeous finishing touches and convenient features, but it’s also bursting with luxury on the interior too. The electric fireplace is a promise for cozy winter evenings, and the unique peninsula kitchen is bursting with countertop space and panoramic windows so I can admire the finest views of nature. There’s also a family-sized dinette to enjoy, along with convertible furniture, a half bath, and an outdoor dog hitching station complete with safety mechanisms to keep fluffy friends safe too.

Best For Large Families: Jayco Eagle

Towable by most half-ton trucks and SUVs, the Jayco Eagle has two awesome bunkhouse-style floorplans, which bring the sleeping capabilities of this trailer to an incredible 10 people! Jayco is a popular name in the RV world, which is no surprise as their rigs boast top-quality construction and customer support.

Jayco’s warranties help calm any nerves for new RVers, and purchasing quality-made rigs results in happy campers. The Jayco Eagle is ideal for large families who need ample space both for sleeping and using a trailer in the best way possible. With bunkhouse options, everyone can sleep easily, and since the Eagle varies in length from 34′ 10″ to 38′ 9″, there’s ample space to keep things airy inside.

The overall length of each Eagle floorplan is pretty long, especially for first-time towing, but some might say it’s best to jump in the deep end! I would definitely advise taking some practice tows first, though, as it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry! For those with a tow car able to handle the Eagle, t he interior design is truly where Jayco shines.

They offer all-wood cabinetry, specialty laminate flooring, several windows to flood the space with natural light, and quality convertible furniture for sleeping multiple people. Jayco constructs their rigs on a lightweight but sturdy aluminum frame which helps keep things lightweight. The fiberglass molded walls and roof are also lightweight, meaning less stress and strain on the tow vehicle.

The bunkhouse floor plans have exterior kitchens so I can enjoy the great outdoors for the entirety of my camping trip. While there’s ample living space inside the travel trailer, I like knowing I don’t have to solely spend all of my time inside! The perks found in this travel trailer are too many to list, from a second ducted AC to a power and auto leveling jack system to bring ultimate convenience to every campground trip!

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

It’s possible to find a bunkhouse travel trailer that doesn’t weigh too much, and the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite is well worth a close look. This particular model of travel trailer is fantastic for several reasons, not just its lightweight nature and 13 floorplans! Each floorplan ranges in length from 25′ 6″ to 34′ 5″ making the Apex Ultra-Lite a great fit for a wide range of avid campers!

Out of all of the floorplans, seven have bunk bed options, allowing families to take vacations in style and comfort, all inside a lightweight rig! The largest bunkhouse floor plan weighs less than 6,000 pounds so even modest cars and SUVs should be able to tow this Coachmen rig .  While the interior design seems a little beige, all of the cabinetry and countertops are made from quality materials, and it only takes the addition of some decorative belongings to spruce things up a bit!

You can bet these fixtures will last the lifetime of the rig, even if they may need a bit of help in bringing some color and personality. Coachmen is a division of Forest River, which means the construction of each bunkhouse travel trailer will be solid. All of the walls are made from well-insulated Azdel and bonded fiberglass so no matter the season, the Apex Ultra-Lite can tackle it!

This rig also comes complete with double or full-sized bunk beds making it possible to sleep a large group of people on board. Some of the floor plans also have exclusive master suites with walk-around queen beds which is a piece of luxury I miss from living in a traditional home! There are solar panels and solar prep as standard, though I think some of the non-standard features are worth a look too.

Some of these options include dark and frameless tinted windows, additional amps, a second AC unit, and theater seating.  Coachmen will also back your purchase with a fantastic warranty and owner’s club. If you are worried about being able to tow a bunkhouse travel trailer, you don’t have to worry anymore with this lightweight model!

Travel Trailer With Multiple Bunk Beds: Dutchmen Astoria

Speaking of multiple bunk beds, the Dutchman Astoria is another fantastic model for catering to various sleeping needs from small families to large groups of friends. This Dutchmen can sleep a maximum of 11 people, depending on the floorplan of course! There are 15 floorplans in total, measuring in length from 29′ 11″ to 42′ 5″, meaning I can choose a size best suited to my towing ability and storage situation!

The Astoria offers four different bunkhouse models, and all of them offer a multiple bunkbed scenario. Creating sleeping areas for the kids or friends coming along for a weekend adventure means quality time spent together for everyone.  Safety is always the number one priority for me, and so I love that Dutchmen have loaded their rigs with safety features.

Quality steel frames, a power tongue jack, and heavy-duty tires all work together to create a rugged camper that’s reliable, secure, and durable. The interior of the Dutchmen Astoria is lovely, with many homey features, including an electric fireplace and pantry storage in the kitchen . Personally, I find stainless steel appliances have an unbeatable classic look, so the kitchen in this rig is perfect for my tastes. Paired with the quality backsplash the kitchen is easy to clean and a joy to spend time in.

This rig doesn’t just look good, but it functions well too, partly thanks to the standard 50 amp service of the Astoria. Having enough power on board is essential for appliances such as microwaves or AC units, and 50 amps is a solid amount to start off with. I like the contemporary feel of this rig, with the intricate arched ceiling and overall modern design. The kitchen is clean and white, but I think adding a little color would really help bring the inside to life even more!

The larger models of the Dutchmen Astoria may be too big for some to handle, but the smaller models are well worth considering, and with several bunkhouse options available, there’s a good shot this rig could be the right fit for you! Dutchmen also offer many different warranty options as well as a comprehensive customer service line, so I can have all of my questions answered with ease.

Best For The Pets: Coachmen Northern Spirit

The Coachmen Northern Spirit is a fantastic rig for the entire family, including furry friends. They have many classy and exclusive features available onboard this rig, especially in the bunkhouse models. I’d be lost if I couldn’t bring my pup along for RVing antics, so the Northern Spirit is an ideal rig for me and my partner! With six different bunkhouse options to choose from, the Northern Spirit has an array of layouts for all kinds of RVing groups.

Not only do some models have bathtubs and double bunks, but there are dedicated pet features so furry friends can be just as comfortable too! Some of these features include built-in food dishes, an outdoor hitching post for a dog leash, and an outdoor shower complete with a doggy bath area. The exterior of this rig continues to impress, with powered awnings and exterior LED lighting. As for the interior, the Northern Spirit is a good-looking rig on the inside and outside!

Floorplan dependant, this bunkhouse trailer has a spacious kitchen, a bar-style breakfast nook, and even theater seating for ultimate comfort. The interior also features multiple bunk beds along with a master bedroom so my partner and I can have some privacy.  I’m impressed by the volume of standard features, such as a detachable power cord, a solar panel with room to spare, and exterior speakers so I can bring the party outside during the summer.

The 50 amp electrical service and secondary AC unit in the master suite mean comfort even during the summer. No matter how hot it gets outside, I like that I can keep the entire travel trailer cool using this simple add-on. Like the other Coachmen model on this list, the interior design may be a little bland for some tastes, but nothing I don’t think some throws and cushions couldn’t sort out!

Best For Entertaining: Palomino Puma

Palomino claims to offer the most bunkhouse travel trailer options in the industry, and I’m starting to see why. The Palomino Puma has 31 different floorplans across both the travel trailer and fifth wheel models, with an astonishing 14 layouts featuring bunk beds! The Puma is a beauty inside and out, offering ample pass thru storage, sturdy fiberglass exterior walls, and power awnings with LED lighting.

I appreciate the safety step as I can sometimes be a bit clumsy, but together with the outdoor lighting, safety in the dark is greatly improved. The exterior speakers are perfect for entertaining guests of all ages, and the bunkhouse interior on select floorplans is what makes this rig fit for big families. With so many floorplans, it’s possible to find a bunkhouse option with two master suites, making it a perfect fit for kiddos, parents, and even grandparents!

The Puma is ideal for entertaining given the open layout allowing for easy transition through different areas of the rig. There are layouts featuring kitchens with islands and large countertops, or living rooms equipped with theater seating and electric fireplaces, ideal for cozy winter nights.  This rig is built for adventure as well as connection, as it’s prewired for solar and WiFi. It has interior Bluetooth speakers and an entertainment center so everyone can keep happy and uplifted while traveling the open road.

Once the destination is reached, the power jack and built-in stabilizers help make the setup quick and easy, which is what I need after a long afternoon of driving! I’m also grateful for the ample storage throughout the Palomino Puma, as it means dirty gear can be stored away securely outside, limiting dirt and mess inside the trailer.

This trailer offers many floorplans across a wide variety of travel trailer lengths that makes it feel like there’s a layout for everybody. The roomy interior is finished in an open-plan way that’s perfect for entertaining, even if the party makes its way outside!

Best Indoor/Outdoor Bunkhouse: Keystone Outback Ultra Lite

Speaking of indoor/outdoor partying, the Keystone Outback Ultra Lite is a trailer with bunkhouse options to fit any RVer. This bunkhouse model has a lot to offer, and not only because it’s all housed on a super sturdy and lightweight aluminum frame.  With 9 floorplans and a few of them serving as bunkhouses, there’s a lot to get excited about with this semi-luxurious travel trailer. Keystone makes quality rigs too, with four-season capable options which is exactly what I need, traveling year-round in my rig.

The largest model available under the Outback Ultra Lite name includes an outdoor kitchen , a rear bunkhouse, and a large electric fireplace, creating a welcoming interior. The master bedroom features a walk-around bed and a built-in pet kennel underneath with ample storage so our pup can have a dedicated place to sleep and relax.

The living areas on this particular travel trailer are spacious and accommodating, with open kitchens and dining nooks. The u-shaped dinettes can seat the whole family on some models, which is great considering some of these floor plans can sleep up to 10 people! I love it when the whole family can get together for an RVing adventure, but often it can be tricky to sleep everyone, but not in this Keystone rig!

One of the biggest perks of this travel trailer for me is the abundance of outdoor kitchen accessories available. I’m able to utilize a stove, sink, and mini fridge outside the RV, while an entire residential kitchen awaits me indoors should the weather turn bad quickly! Keystone offers multiple comprehensive warranties for their rigs, and I’m instantly reassured by the high-quality construction of each Keystone travel trailer.

The Outback Ultra Lite is also fit with 4G LTW and Wi-Fi prep for staying connected even in the heart of nature. There’s also ducted heating and cooling which helps to make this rig four-season capable and promises successful all-season adventuring.  There’s a lot on offer with this trailer, especially for those who enjoy both being warm and secure inside an RV, but also heading out into the wilderness at any opportunity!

Best Budget-Friendly: Winnebago Micro Minnie

Out of the 11 floorplans available with the Winnebago Micro Minnie , 4 of them are bunkhouse layouts, creating room to sleep up to 5 people. This isn’t as many as the Palomino Puma, so large families may have to opt for a bigger rig. However, small families or groups of travelers will fit perfectly in this attractive trailer from one of the best budget-friendly RV brands out there!

Winnebago has been in the RV game for some time, and this is reflected throughout all of their rigs, including the Micro Minnie. The smallest floorplan has an overall length of 19′ 5″, while the biggest model measures a substantial 25′ 5″. As the name suggests, the Minnie isn’t the biggest travel trailer out there, but for the price, it boasts an array of great features.

An open galley kitchen equipped with a 3-burner cooktop, convection microwave, and large fridge bring functionality to the trailer and an overall clean kitchen aesthetic. There’s an optional upgrade of European-style cabinetry, but if you don’t mind a more standard finish, keeping away from optional extras will help reduce the final cost.

The large windows throughout this Winnebago allow fresh air to dance throughout the trailer, and help keep things smelling good. I like that the interior isn’t full of storage at every single possibility, and this is thanks to both the interior and exterior storage solutions to keep everything stowed away neatly and securely.

I love spending time outdoors, and although there aren’t too many exterior features with the Micro Minnie, the JBL Premium exterior speakers and powered patio awning with integrated LED lighting help bring personality and fun to the outside of the rig as well. The 200W of solar power on the roof is fantastic for boondocking, but personally, I would like a bit more power so I can run everything in my rig without the use of a noisy generator!

Most Luxurious: Grand Design RV Imagine

Not every floorplan of the Grand Design RV Imagine is a bunkhouse one, but a couple are, and since Grand Design are renowned for producing luxurious rigs, I couldn’t leave the Imagine off our list! Typical of Grand Design RV, the Imagine is constructed with the highest quality possible, with the sidewalls, rear wall, slide-room walls, and slide-room roof all packed with rigid foam insulation.

Not only does this result in a sturdy trailer, but this also means better temperature regulation throughout the year. It’s also possible to walk on the roof which is a game-changer for completing maintenance tasks like covering the RV for summer to prevent sun damage. The enclosed underbelly and double insulated floor also help to regulate the temperature and will help keep the rig in better condition for longer too.

Even the roof is as strong as anything and is backed by an 18-year warranty. I don’t think I’ve seen a warranty this impressive from any other RV! There’s more to the Imagine than just an impressive exterior, however, and the inside of this rig is the dream blend of luxury and practicality. Some of the internal features across select floorplans include double bunk sleeping, a booth dinette, a queen bed, a spacious bathroom with a skylight above the shower, theater seating, and an awning.

It seems Grand Design has thought about pretty much everything with the Imagine, and each layout can be tailored to suit such a diverse range of RVers. This luxury does come at a bit of a higher price than other trailers on our list such as the previously mentioned Winnebago, but the Imagine is a stunning rig, promising adventures far and wide for many years to come.

Best With Slide Outs: Cruiser RV Embrace

Cruiser RV isn’t a name I hear mentioned too often, even though they’ve been in the RV game since 1988! The Cruiser RV Embrace is a travel trailer with 6 different floorplans, with 4 innovative bunkhouse options, ideal for families. The Embrace utilizes slide-outs to enhance the interior space, and this is one of the reasons the interior feels so airy and spacious.

There are many pros and cons to owning a rig with slide-outs as they are another component that will need maintaining, however, they bring extra room and can save the day when last-minute guests want to jump on board for vacation! Starting at just 5,904 lbs and 30′ 8″ in length, the Cruiser Embrace is by no means a small trailer! Measuring in at over 30′ might be too long for some RVers, especially those new to towing.

However, I find practice makes perfect, and my confidence increased substantially after the first few trips I took towing my travel trailer, so don’t lose hope! A couple of layouts are able to sleep upwards of 10 people without a drop of hassle, and this is due to the addition of creative bunk sleeping areas. Along with comfortable beds, there’s also comfortable seating throughout, a dinette, a spacious kitchen, and more to make camping on the road as convenient and fun as possible.

Slide-outs might not be to everyone’s tastes, but in the Embrace, they are fundamental to each and every layout option. The aluminum roof, power awning, underbelly storage, and solar prep, all help make the exterior as impressive as the interior. Upgrading to a 50 amp service is possible with some models, and something I would look into as having more power on board means less stress through cold, dark winters.

Overall, the Cruiser RV Embrace is a solid trailer, equipped with slide-outs, helping create a spacious camper where everyone can feel at home and families can make long-lasting memories. The only downside with this rig for me, is that the holding tanks are only 30 gallons, which is a little on the small side, especially for full-time living and boondocking. However, if this isn’t a dealbreaker, the Embrace is worth considering for a bunkhouse trailer with elegance, slide-outs, and an array of impressive features.

Final Thoughts

Bunkhouse travel trailers are some of the most spacious and unique RV options on the market today. We’ve hopefully helped narrow down your RV search by showcasing some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers around! Finding the perfect RV often takes time and patience, but I trust that you’re not too far away from finding the perfect rig to kickstart your RVing journey.

How We Selected The Best Travel Trailers Under 3000 Lbs

How We Selected The Best lightweight camper trailers Under 3,000 Lbs

Our top criteria for choosing the best small and light-weight travel trailers under 3,000 pounds was for a dry weight of less than 3,000 pounds.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) may be higher for some of the trailers on this list, but the capacity and actual weight will depend on the weight of the water and gear that you carry.

With a dry weight of less than 3,000 lbs, all of these amazing travel trailers are lightweight, even with standard equipment and features.

Just pack your cargo and fill up your fluids, and you’re ready to hit the road!

We also considered some important aspects of these lightweight travel trailers, beyond their low dry weight.

Some of the criteria we looked at included:

  • Floorplan options for living and sleeping space (whether slide outs were available)
  • Interior height and full trailer length
  • Design features and upgrade options
  • Quality of construction and interior materials
  • Past customer reviews and experiences

12 Fantastic Travel Trailers Under 3000 Lbs

12 Best Small And Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 3,000 Lbs In 2021

There are lots of small travel trailers that have a dry weight of less than 3,000 pounds. For this list, I found a dozen of the best options, based on features, layouts and more.

let’s take a look at the top 12 best Lightweight Travel Trailers and campers Under 3,000 Pounds on the market today.

1. Jayco Jay Sport Camping Tent Trailer

Jayco Jay Sport

Most of the travel trailers on this list are hard campers, although some have slide-outs or pop-up rooftops.

The Jayco Jay Sport is a bit unusual, since it’s a tent trailer, which travels compact and then the ceiling pops up and sleeping bunks pop out at your campsite.

A tent trailer can be far more lightweight than other trailers, and provides the added benefit of unrestricted views (fewer blind spots) through your rear-view mirror as you travel.

The Jayco Jay Sport has four available floor-plans, with different lengths of living spaces and interior configurations.

All of the floor-plans have a galley kitchen, two pop-out sleeping bunks, a convertible dinette (two dinettes are offered on the 12UD model), and different options for storage. The 12SC model has an additional sofa bed and pop-out.

All Jay Sport travel trailers have a dry weight of under 2,500 lbs, and the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for the largest floorplan is still very low, at 3,375 pounds.

Jayco Jay Sport Interior

The drawback for this popup camper is that there’s no bathroom, however there is a porta-potti storage cabinet built in.

The 12SC model has an option for a shower/toilet combo available.

Jayco’s Jay Sport trailers feature wall-to-wall BeauFlor® flooring, 75-pound capacity drawers with ball-bearing guides, DuraTek™ water-repellant and sectionalized tents, and 1,050-pound rated beds.

Plus, the frame, roof, floor, tents, bed platform and lifter system are all backed by Jayco’s 5-year warranties.

Some of the cool add-on features for the Jay Sport trailer include an optional exterior grill and 10- or 12-foot screen room with privacy panels for an enclosed outdoor space.

In addition to the Jay Sport, Jayco has two other travel trailers that weigh less than 3,000; the Jay Flight SLX 195RB and the Jayco Hummingbird 17RB.

  • Heavy-duty, corrosion resistant frame construction

Travel trailers with a Murphy Bed are great for creating more usable space inside your camper. A Murphy bed serves as a couch during the day and a bed at night. These multi-functional beds are a great way to maximize the living space in any caper trailer.

A Murphy bed is also referred to as a wall bed or pull-down bed. It is a bed that is hinged on one head to the wall so that it can be stored vertically against the wall when it isn’t in use. Then when someone needs to use it, it can be brought down and used by an inhabitant.

The biggest benefit of a Murphy bed is that it opens up a lot of space inside the travel trailer. This is extremely valuable because you’re already working with limited space in most travel trailers. It’s especially valuable in small travel trailers because it opens up the living area.

Finding the best travel trailer with a Murphy bed can be a difficult task. There’s a lot you need to consider before you make a purchase. One problem many people run into is that they can only find smaller options.

Since Murphy beds provide extra living space, they are usually additions to smaller travel trailers. However, just because you want a Murphy bed doesn’t mean you want a small travel trailer. So, you need to do your research so that you can find the best travel trailer with a Murphy bed that’s still a decent size.

Read on to see our list of the best travel trailers with Murphy beds in 2024. We have visited RV Shows and dealerships all across the country to come up with our list!

Are Murphy Beds Easy to Use?

Yes, they are very easy to use. We recommend using a bungee cord around the bed to hold your sheets and comforter in place when you stow the bed away.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure your RV is completely level before unfolding your Murphy bed. You may want to use leveling blocks to achieve this.

10 Best Travel Trailers with a Murphy Bed For 2024

Here, we’ll look at 10 options that could be the best travel trailer with a Murphy bed. You should note that although this is a numbered list, we did not rank the trailers. Additionally, you should note that some trailers will have more than one bed.

We’ll look primarily at the length, unloaded vehicle weight, sleeping capacity, and MSRP of each trailer. However, we’ll look at other features that improve the trailers as well. We hope that one of these travel trailers is a good fit for you.

1. r-pod RP-203

r-pod RP-203 Exterior Travel Trailers Murphy Bed

Our Pros and Cons

✅ Tons of storage space throughout, with over a ton of capacity

⛔ Lacks kitchen drawers

  • Length:  25′
  • UVW:  5,169 lbs
  • GVWR:  7,725 lbs
  • CCC:  2,556 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  725 lbs
  • Sleep:  8

The r-pod is like the ultimate teardrop, retaining the frame and overall look of one, but on a much larger scale. The fact that these travel trailers come with a Murphy bed further increases the available interior space anytime you need it.

For whatever reason, the RP series began to pick up steam after the pandemic. It seems like consumers are picking up on what it has to offer.

At 25′, it sleeps 8 and has a full bathroom, dinette, double bunks, and a large Murphy bed, flanked by wardrobes and nightstands. It’s hard to argue with how much Forest River did with less space.

2. Winnebago Hike H1316MB

Winnebago Hike H1316MB Exterior

✅ Features Dexter Torsion axle-less suspension system

⛔ Only a small fridge and microwave for food storage and cooking

  • Length:  15′ 9″
  • UVW:  3,178 lbs
  • GVWR:  4,200 lbs
  • CCC:  1,022 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  546 lbs
  • Sleep:  3

Winnebago is inextricably linked with the very idea of camping RV-style. This tiny little camper doesn’t look like much, but it packs quite a punch despite its size limitations. In travel trailers this small, the value of a Murphy Bed is huge. It opens up so much space when you don’t need to sleep.

Also, it folds into a sofa quick and easy, with little effort on your part. Though the H1316MB lacks a traditional kitchen, you can always add your own portable stove when you want. In the meantime, you still have the advantages of a bathroom, sink, plenty of storage capacity, a table, fridge, and microwave.

3. Vintage Cruiser 23MBS

Vintage Cruiser 23MBS Exterior

✅ Wood Estate interior and exterior aesthetic is fantastic

⛔ A/C is optional, not standard

  • Length:  26.1′
  • UVW:  4,253 lbs
  • GVWR:  5,929 lbs
  • CCC:  1,676 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  490 lbs
  • Sleep:  4

Of all the travel trailers on this list that come with a Murphy bed, you have to love the vintage style and aesthetic that Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser is going for. Vintage is in style again, but don’t mistake Gulf Stream’s vintage look for a non-modern travel trailer.

You still get all the bells and whistles with this one, including a full outdoor kitchen, a jack-knife sofa/Murphy bed, an indoor kitchen, and an HDTV with hookups for additional tech. It also features pass-through storage and nearly a ton of additional storage capacity.

4. Northwood Nash 18FM

Northwood Nash 18FM Exterior Travel Trailers Murphy Bed

✅ Tons of storage space, including pantry, cabinetry, drawers, linen closets, and wardrobes

⛔ You can’t do much inside the RV, including accessing the bathroom, with the slide-in

  • Length:  22.9′
  • UVW:  5,106 lbs
  • GVWR:  7,400 lbs
  • CCC:  1,738 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  556 lbs

If you’re looking for something a little different but still want a Murphy Bed, Northwood’s Nash 18FM may be the right one for you. That’s because Northwood manufactures its own chassis and falls outside of that rapidly shrinking pool of independent RV manufacturers.

The Nash in particular is a very spacious RV, so long as the slide is out, that is. It also offers a very comfortable R&R interior, with larger and softer cushioning than most travel trailers offer, within the same class. This extra cushioning applies to the Murphy bed as well, so get ready to count sheep in comfort.

5. Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S

Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S Exterior

✅ Fantastic headroom, overall space, and storage options

⛔ TV is at a 90-degree angle from the Murphy bed

  • Length:  25.9′
  • UVW:  5,440 lbs
  • GVWR:  6,933 lbs
  • CCC:  1,493 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  773 lbs

We have several family travel trailers in this line-up, with Murphy beds adding to the allure. The Rockwood Mini Lite 2509S is one such RV, with a ton of space and a high sleeping capacity. The double bunks are especially nice, with enough remaining room in the back for a full bathroom.

It also comes with an outdoor kitchen, which includes a slide-out griddle and a two-burner stove. You can spend time cooking outdoors with an 18′ awning to keep you cool and in the shade. The standard option comes with a large dinette in the slide, but you can opt for theater seating or a hide-a-bed.

6. Heartland Sundance 21HB

Heartland Sundance 21HB Exterior

✅ Flip-up baggage door is a huge plus, along with the extra-large dinette in the back

⛔ Bathroom is a really tight fit

  • Length:  24.8′
  • UVW:  4,542 lbs
  • GVWR:  6,995 lbs
  • CCC:  2,450 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  452 lbs

The Heartland Sundance 21HB is one of the more versatile RVs on this list. The Murphy bed is a given, but the 21HB also features a unique, hatchback design that’s very convenient when dining or having lunch at the rear table.

The remainder of the interior is spacious, with a large bathroom and a decent-sized kitchen directly across from it. It’s the perfect camper size for sleeping up to four people, with over a ton of cargo carrying capacity for all the gear, mods, and additions you want to bring along for the ride.

7. East To West Silver Lake 18BHLE

East To West Silver Lake 18BHLE Exterior Travel Trailers Murphy Bed

✅ A ton of sleeping space in a relatively small travel trailer

⛔ Low cargo carrying capacity for a travel trailer that sleeps 8

  • Length:  23′
  • UVW:  4,354 lbs
  • GVWR:  4,965 lbs
  • CCC:  611 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  565 lbs

One of several family travel trailers with a Murphy bed on our list, the East To West Silver Lake 18BHLE packs a lot into a small space. In fact, it’s the one real drawback of this travel trailer. The weight doesn’t allow for much in the way of cargo-carrying capacity.

It features a large, walk-in shower, and a queen-sized Murphy bed that includes underneath storage. There’s also a storage option underneath the large dinette. Though there’s no exterior kitchen, there is an outside shower for those long days on a sandy beach.

8. Jayco Jay Flight 235MBH

Jayco Jay Flight 235MBH Exterior

✅ The perfect compromise between large families and travel trailers that are just too long

⛔ Murphy bed could use some DIY reinforcement

  • Length:  27′ 10″
  • UVW:  5,660 lbs
  • GVWR:  6,850 lbs
  • CCC:  1,190 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  680 lbs

The Jayco Jay Flight 235MBH is one of the few travel trailers with a Murphy bed that offers some level of privacy for whoever is sleeping on it. In this case, it’s a slide-out curtain that stretches the width of the travel trailer across.

As for everyone else, there are double bunks, along with the convertible dinette, which accounts for a total of 8 potential sleepers. The bathroom is large enough to get around inside without bumping your elbows. The living and kitchen space is large enough as well, though the TV could be a bit larger.

9. Grand Design Imagine 25BHE

Grand Design Imagine 25BHE Exterior

✅ Full-featured, exterior kitchen setup and the TV location is perfect

⛔ Comes with the underwhelming leaf-spring suspension system

  • Length:  29.9′
  • UVW:  6,244 lbs
  • GVWR:  7,395 lbs
  • CCC:  1,151 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  807 lbs

For travel trailers that can sleep up to eight people, it’s always nice to see that exterior kitchen, as well as a sizeable awning to keep everyone in shade, at least until nightfall. Though the kitchen is part of the lone slide, it doesn’t prevent you from accessing anything when the slide is in.

Like several options on this list, the Grand Design Imagine 25BHE features double bunks in the rear, splitting the back end in half, with the bathroom taking up the remaining space. Even with the double bunks, the bathroom is still plenty roomy, with a large shower and room to move about.

10. Keystone Passport 189RB

Keystone Passport 189RB Exterior Travel Trailers Murphy Bed

✅ The bathroom is large and very spacious, taking up the entire back quarter of the RV

⛔ TV is at an odd angle from the bed

  • Length:  22′ 9″
  • UVW:  4,670 lbs
  • GVWR:  6,430 lbs
  • CCC:  1,760 lbs
  • Tongue Weight:  530 lbs

Last on our list of travel trailers with a Murphy bed, the Keystone Passport 189RB wraps things up with a twist of its own. It’s one of the few travel trailers that sticks with the bathroom in the back, as sort of an end-cap. It works even better in reality than it does when looking at the floorplan.

The bathroom is spacious and not rubbing shoulders with double bunks. Of course, the sleeping capacity is only four, but that covers a broad dynamic of families today. The L-shaped counter keeps the kitchen from extending into the living space and, when the Murphy bed is up, there is a ton of space left behind.

Are Travel Trailer Murphy Beds Comfortable?

Since a Murphy bed locks in place during the day, any improvements to the mattress (like making it firmer, thicker, or adding a topper) mean you may have to adjust the locking mechanism.

However, you can add a topper and remove it when you fold up the bed, although then you will have to consider storage for the topper. If you feel confident in your DIY skills, you may also be able to adjust the locks to add a thicker mattress.

Pros and Cons of Murphy Bed in a Trailer

Simply put, Murphy beds are a wonderful solution but may not be for everyone for various reasons. Here are a few pros and cons of getting a camper trailer with a Murphy bed.

Probably the biggest advantage of getting a travel trailer with a Murphy bed is that you will be using space during the day that would otherwise go to waste because of a bed. Murphy beds free up a lot of living space and can potentially allow you to get a smaller trailer since you will not need as much floor space.

Also, unlike a trailer with a convertible bed that folds into a dinette, you do not need to unmake your Murphy bed. You will need to remove blankets and bedspreads more than likely, but you can leave the sheets on and fold the whole thing up into the wall until you need it again that night thankfully.

There are not a lot of cons honestly, but the biggest disadvantage to a Murphy bed is that you lose your sleeping space during the day.  So, if you like to nap, or say read in your bed during the afternoon, you may want to consider a different solution.

Some people also find that a Murphy bed mattress is uncomfortable, and any solution to fix the mattress will either involve a topper you need to store separately during the day or will involve changing the mechanism that fastens your bed to the wall.

While a travel trailer with a Murphy bed may not work for everyone, you may find that it’s the perfect solution for you and your family.

They were okay, but really only one if you don’t plan on dragging two grandkids with you on your retirement.

Rockwood mini-lite 2507S was somehow missed. Many standard features as well as a full 60X80 queen bed.

Yes we’re looking for an ultra lite with Murphy bed but without the bunk beds please ! Actually the RV shows we’ve been to it’s hard to find one with the Murphy bed at all ……… We love our dodge half ton truck so that’s not an option to give up so if anyone out there wants our business they better start listening to us !

Nice compilation! One thing to add which I think is an important feature you left out on the Geo Pro 19FD. Yes its a couples camper not meant for a family however the price falls in the 22-23K not the 33k msrp. What sets this camper apart from all the others listed is the fact GEO adds several upgrades as standard. From Off Road Package..Bigger Tires and Torflex axel. 190Watt Solar panel with 1K inverter, Larger Stainless Kitchen sink with Goose neck faucet, Tire Pressure Monitor System, All aluminum framing with Azdel Walls & Roof… 12 V 10 Cubic’ Fridge, 12 V Dual TV/DVD, Keyed a Like System, Showermiser system, WiFi & TV Booster, Heated Tanks. These are all Standard, nobody comes close to this.

Your blog is so great, I’m new at buying a travel trailer, we will purchase within the next 12 months. I’m a researcher by nature, any major purchase, I do my homework so I truly appreciate the wonderful information you provide. I know the length, I feel comfortable pulling and want 2 tandem axle. We have pulled horse trailers for years so hauling is not new to us. Driven motor homes several times but a travel trailer will be new for us. I’m interested in 20-22 feet max tip to tip one slide out and murphy bed would be nice. Sleep 2-3 max. Question if you have a previous article on single verses double tandem plus receiving mixed information on length bumper to front or tongue or ? Would appreciate any and all information that would help me with a purchase prefer not to buy new. We have a new ram crew cab that will tow up to 10K and the 3.92 axle for towing. Thank you

Why We Love Bunkhouse Travel Trailers?

Why We Love Bunkhouse Campers? Bunkhouse Travel Trailers have great advantages for families or numerous groups of people enjoying together. Let’s see briefly why we love bunkhouse campers.

  • Floor layouts with bunk beds have greater room for movement because they take up less space. Some bunkhouses include beds in a loft, which makes the most of the available vertical space and offers you more storage. Compared to fifth wheels and toy haulers, travel trailers are frequently cheaper, lighter, and smaller. Since they are simpler to tow, smaller travel trailers are perfect for first-time RV owners. With a variety of tempting amenities, such as baths with a tub, as we will see in this article some options for a bunkhouse travel trailer under 7000 lbs, or double-size double bunks, offering in mid-range and luxury models .
  • Perhaps you have a large family with many children, or you enjoy traveling with your extended family. Bunk beds are a great way to give everyone their own space.
  • Bunk beds are popular among children because they allow them to sleep sooner or later than their siblings without being disturbed when someone else wakes up or goes to bed. A bunkhouse RV is also ideal for teens who wish to bring a buddy or simply have some alone time to read or listen to music.
  • Overflow storage space is another application for bunk beds , particularly for those traveling with bulky things.

What to Consider When You Are Looking for a Camper Under Certain Weight

  • Websites frequently provide RV weights without identifying the kind of weight or merely referring to the weight as “dry weight” (UVW). However, bear in mind that while towing a camper with your truck, you must consider all weights and loads, including people. So far as I’m aware, the only weight that counts for deciding whether you can tow the RV or not is its gross weight (GVWR). Generally speaking, I don’t give dry weight much consideration because I want my RV to be fully loaded.
  • Therefore, from my point of view, the gross weight is a vital weight that I will consider in deciding whether or not I can tow the travel trailer. So, keep that in mind when you are looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer under 7000 lbs , or under “x” weight.
  • The Gross Weight Rating (GVWR), often known as the total weight or “GVWR” weight, is calculated by adding the camper’s Dry Weight (also known as the UVW or delivered weight) and Load Capacity Weight.
  • Always consult the owner’s manuals of the essential vehicles and equipment before deciding to buy and tow an RV . Additionally, given the arrangement you are using, be fully aware of your vehicle’s towing capacity. The towing capacity will vary depending on the weight, vehicle layout, passenger count, and accessories. Verify your vehicle’s towing capabilities before you get behind the wheel and, if necessary, seek professional assistance. This is done to protect both you and other people.

About John Smith

For more than 30 years I worked in the exciting world of RV manufacturing. I liked knowing that I could improve the campers with customer feedback and see the improvements and upgrades on floor plans, delivering the best designs and the best quality RVs, year after year. After traveling with my family in RVs and small rented campers across the USA, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and even North Africa, I feel that I must share personal experiences, guidance, concerns, tips, and news. At Camper Outdoor, we share our biggest passion, weekend getaways in a camper, RV vacations, extended stays in RV parks, the quiet life of senior couples who choose to spend more time enjoying their RV, and boondocking experiences (which as in the beginning was unsuccessful, we have good tips to avoid the same thing happening to you!).
