This  Norway Trek begins in the small town of Svolvær , Norway, where you meet the group and your guides in the city center at the tourist office (Torget 18, 8300 Svolvær, Norway) near the Thon Hotel Lofoten. After some introductions, our group will be transferred to our first night’s accommodations. The cabins we stay at during our first two nights of the trip sit right along the water. Your guide will conduct an orientation meeting once we are settled in and then you will have some time to relax before the group’s first dinner together. Tonight’s accommodation offers a spa and sauna for those interested after their travels.

  • Elevation Gain: 1740 feet (530 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 1740 feet (530 m)
  • Drive Time: 1 hour

Today we will enjoy an energizing breakfast to prepare us for the day. Afterward we will drive 30 minutes to the trailhead for our first hike. Today’s hike is on Lofoten’s most famous mountain, Festvågtind. This short, yet steep and challenging hike takes us up to dramatic, sweeping views of the surrounding islands and expansive Norwegian Sea. Weather depending, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at the summit before heading back down to our vehicle. From here we’ll head to the charming fishing village of Henningsvær to walk and experience its quaint streets and shops. A local Norwegian dinner and relaxing evening cap off this amazing day.

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.4 miles (7 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 2297 feet (700 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 2297 feet (700 m)

Today we’ll pack up and head 40 minutes up the road to our hike on the mountain Kleppstadheia. Our hike starts at sea level and climbs up to fabulous views of the surrounding landscapes. Where the sea meets the mountains, we’ll enjoy a lunch prepared by your guide before heading back down. From the top we’ll soak up 360-degree views, which – if clear enough – can include the distant Vesterålen Islands. We’ll enjoy today’s picnic lunch on the summit or the beach below depending on timing. If the weather is cooperative we will reserve a private sauna on the beach for our group before enjoying another traditional Norwegian dinner, a short walk from our cabins.

Don’t forget your camera or phone today, because the photography is out of this world! After our descent we’ll head toward tonight’s lodging, Solsiden Brygge. Our day ends with much-deserved showers, dinner, and a soak in our lodge’s wonderful hot tub!

Dinner is just a short walk away at a local restaurant.

After enjoying the beach for a bit, and a picnic lunch, we’ll return and catch our boat shuttle back to Reine.

Our afternoon includes a short 10-minute drive and a second hike to Reinebringen, the most famous hike in the Lofoten Islands. The view from this short hike is known as the most iconic in the area. When you think of Lofoten you think of this image – don’t forget your camera! This is a perfect ending to the hiking portion of our spectacular journey. Meals: What to Expect

Norwegian cuisine is very traditional and includes a simple approach to breakfasts and lunches. Norwegians often eat Matpakke – a cold lunch made from breakfast supplies. Norwegians focus a lot of their diet on meat, fish, root vegetables and heavy sauces. For dinners, ingredients are very high in quality and will be traditional Norwegian cuisine. Menus are often set, and there is not an option to order something else at most of our accommodations. The ability to choose your meal off a menu depends on the restaurant and can be organized beforehand when possible.

We can often accommodate vegan, vegetarian and non-gluten diets and make adjustments for food allergies. These and other special dietary requests may require an additional fee, and in some countries may be more difficult to accommodate than others. Please inquire with us for more information about the specific trip you’re interested in.

Lodging: What to Expect

We have hand-selected lodges that are perfectly located, locally owned, and uniquely Norwegian. With rich history, ocean views and saunas, you will be sure to enjoy these accommodations.

There are some unique elements to these accommodations that are important for guests to understand:

  • The lodges are often split into separate cottages. Guests of the same group may be split into different cottages. Sometimes, you may share a cottage with people from outside of our group.
  • Some hotels do not offer ensuite rooms, so bathrooms are shared with those staying in the same cottage. Bathrooms may be shared with mixed genders.
  • The rooms are smaller than you may be accustomed to at hotels in the US. However, each cottage has communal living space to spend the evening in.

Please see the  Accommodations  section for more information.

Gear We Provide

We provide all group gear which includes the following:

  • Norrøna backpacks
  • Leki trekking poles

Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Guide Working Parameters

Guides are required to take 8 hours off each 24-hour period to sleep, recuperate, take personal/down time…etc. In addition, as part of the 8 hours off they must sleep/rest or be in their tents/rooms  uninterrupted  for a minimum of 5 hours each night. We ask guests to respect these requirements and to not interrupt guides’ off time and sleep time unless there is a true emergency.

Age restrictions on this trip are as follows:

  • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 5 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Trip Insurance

For your protection, we strongly recommend the purchase of field evacuation, repatriation, and medical trip insurance. International travel is expensive, and the modest cost of trip insurance is a sound investment in an uncertain world.

If you wish to purchase trip insurance, we recommend IMG/iTravelinsured. They are one of the world’s leading providers of travel insurance.

For information on recommended IMG/iTravelinsured policies please  click here .

For even greater information, or if you simply prefer communicating with a real, live person, feel free to contact our exclusive agent Michael Bennett. Michael will help you identify the best product for your needs, and there is no cost associated with his assistance. You may contact him at:

Email: [email protected] US by Phone: 877-305-9083 Direct/International by Phone: 702-448-3664

If you already have insurance or wish to purchase from anyone other than IMG/iTravelinsured, we recommend careful consultation with the provider to ensure appropriate coverage. This is because many providers have a number of policy exclusions.

Weather in Lofoten

Lofoten is a stunning place that receives quite a bit of rain. Weather can change very quickly, with rain or wind moving over the ocean and hitting the coastline. Some days we have sunny skies and excellent weather, but the hiking is consistently wet and muddy. Guests need to be prepared for sunshine, rain and wind.

Norway | the islands of lofoten, unlock the treasures of norway's mountains and fjords..

Lofoten Island

  • "Let me just tell you straight off the bat, Babsi is a gem. In fact, she may be the Hope diamond of guides. After enjoying a number of self-guided trips with R/W, Babsi is the first representative of your company that we have met in person. And if she is the face of R/W, then the company's success is assured. Over time, Babsi has earned the love and respect of all of the trail vendors which meant that we got the best table at the restaurant or the best cabin. She even arranged for an Orca sighting on one of the boat rides. Amazing! She is blessed with an outgoing personality as well as an attention to details. She is smart, patient, encouraging, funny, reliable, and adventurous. She's a true professional---a definite keeper!" - Sam S.
  • "Today was magnificent! All the pieces came together of the mountains in Lofoten. We experienced the essence of mountains by the shore. It was the mist of the fog. The sheep, the green, green grass, the smell of the ocean, the sound of silence with the oceans waves, the smell of the wet rock and the red kelp from the water, the norweigen tommy offering us waffles and coffee in his surfing B&B." - Jan Dekle

In Norway's north, we explore from the towering peaks and tiny villages of the Lofoten Islands to dreamy Senja Island and onward to the cultural hub of Tromsø, the mountain-ringed Arctic capital. The breathtaking Lofoten archipelago, which includes the jagged spine of the 100-mile-long Lofotenveggen (“Lofoten Wall”), lie above the Arctic Circle but enjoy a mild climate thanks to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. We explore on wonderful hikes, paddle sea kayaks in the crystalline waters of Bergsfjorden, and even visit a reindeer farm of the Sámi! Our overnights include rorbuer—historic fishermen's cabins—and an enchanting waterfront inn on Senja Island.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Our hikes through Lofoten's captivating rugged terrain climb rocky, uneven paths with some steep sections, many of which are spotted with mud or boulders. Vehicles or boats will get us to and from the trailheads, but the remote nature of these trails means we offer fewer route options. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van. Occasionally we also hike with local guides, allowing us to offer even more support options on these routes.

The Lofoten Islands are rich in heritage and rustic charm, and while Backroads has selected the best properties in the places we visit, history and character often outweigh elegance and luxury in this remote corner of Norway. While two of our hotels, Nusfjord Rorbuer and Reiner Rorbuer—traditional waterfront rorbuer (fishermen's cabins)—offer simpler amenities than the typical Backroads property, they provide us with the greatest access to the best hiking in the region. It's also worth noting that these cabins are set up more like shared apartments, with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and a common living room area that includes a small kitchen, rather than typical hotel room—all part of the charm!

Lofoten Islands Hiking

From big viewpoints to remote beaches and challenging summits, below are 10 great hikes on norway’s lofoten islands.

Lofoten Hiking

Munkebu Hut on the island of Moskenes

Credit: David Wilkinson

The Lofoten Islands are a grand stage for hiking. Many of the trails have far-reaching views of the mountain spires and sea, and they range from easy beach walks to steep, challenging treks into the Lofoten backcountry. The island of Moskenesøya makes a terrific base, although virtually everywhere on the Islands is close to a trail. Digital maps are available by clicking the "map" link for each hike; trails are represented by the red dotted lines. Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) maps can be purchased through the DNT or locally in Norway. Those interested in hiring a guide should inquire with Reine Adventure located near the Reine Rorbuer. The weather is variable so bring layers and keep a close eye on the conditions.

1. Reinebringen

Starting point: Reine ( see map ) Duration: 2-3 hours round trip Difficulty: Short but challenging

This viewpoint is one the biggest on all the Islands—a steep scramble to an epic panorama of Reinefjorden and the improbable Lofoten Wall. Reinebringen is only 448 meters high but the hike is essentially straight up, sometimes slippery, and challenging overall (leave plenty of time to enjoy the views at the top). From the parking area just outside of town toward the village of Å, the E10 passes through a tunnel (Ramsvikstunnelen). The hiking trail can be found on the other side of the tunnel where the paved footpath connects back to the road. Camping is possible near the top but the area is very exposed and water is not available.  Editor’s note (June 4, 2019): The trail to Reinebringen currently is undergoing construction, and intermittent closures will be in effect until work is completed. According to the most recent update, the trail is closed for all use until July 14, 2019. For the most up-to-date information, see the Reinebringen Facebook page before your visit.

Reinebringen, Lofoten Islands

2. Horseid Beach

Starting point: Ferry from Reine to Kjerkfjorden ( see map ) Duration:  4 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate

Start this hike by taking the 15-minute Fjordkyss morning ferry from Reine to the hamlet of Kjerkfjorden (departs from Reine at either 8:00am or 10:00am in the high season). Upon disembarking, turn right from the pier and follow the signs to the trail. Horseid Beach, a magnificent patch of white sand surrounded by towering granite, is approximately two hours of easy walking in each direction. Pack a lunch and make sure to be back at Kjerkfjorden for the return ferry at 3:15pm (45 minutes back to Reine via Vindstand).

3. Bunes Beach

Starting point: Ferry from Reine to Vindstad ( see map )  Duration:  2-3 hours round trip Difficulty:  Easy

The walk to Bunes Beach is similar to Horseid beach only shorter. Take the same morning Fjordkyss ferry from Reine to the village of Vindstad (25 minutes). At Vindstad follow the path northwest alongside the fjord, over the ridge, and down to the beach. The walking is relatively easy and good for families (approximately 1–1½ hours in each direction, 2–3 hours total). The return ferry leaves Vindstad at 3:25pm (35 minutes back to Reine).

4. Munkebu Hut

Starting point:  Sørvågen ( see map ) Duration:  5-6 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

This intermediate-grade hike starts from Sørvågen, 1.5km east of the village of Å and the end of the E10, and rises through the Lofoten backcountry past four lakes en route to the stunning Munkebu hut (pictured above). The trip takes approximately 2½–3 hours each way with a 450 meter vertical rise (some sections require scrambling but metal supports are provided). Munkebu is also used as an overnight basecamp for hiking to the summit of Hermannsdalstinden (see below). The path begins from Lake Sørvågvatet and crosses over a series of ridges toward the hut. Munkebu is locked and cannot be opened with the normal DNT key; the Munkebu key can be obtained at Sørvågen Commerce (tel. 76 09 12 15) with a DNT membership card.

5. Munkebu Hut to Hermannsdalstinden Summit

Starting point:  Sørvågen ( see map ) Duration:   1 day or more (you can stay at the hut) Difficulty: Challenging

At an altitude of 1,029 meters, Hermannsdalstinden is the highest mountain in western Lofoten and offers the single most breathtaking view of the Islands (second place is Reinebringen). The hike is difficult with steep, exposed sections, loose rock, and potentially high winds. From Munkebu hut to the summit takes 6–8 hours round trip—fast and experienced trekkers can do the full hike from Sørvågen in a very long day (11–14 hours total). The most logical plan, however, is to stay at the hut or camp and enjoy the hike to the summit during the calmer morning weather.

Starting point:  Island of   Værøy ( see map ) Duration:  4-6 hours round trip Difficulty:  Moderate

If you want to get way off the beaten path on the Lofoten Islands, try the Island of Værøy. This remote and underappreciated piece on the Lofoten archipelago has remained relatively untouched because getting there requires a ferry from Bødo or Moskenes. A terrific hiking route curves along its northern coast and crosses over to the deserted fishing village of Mostad (10km round trip). The trailhead starts 300m west of the old airstrip. Værøy is known for birdwatching and dramatic Mount Mostadfjell is home to more to more than one million nesting sea birds.

Vaeroy, Lofoten Islands

7. Glomtinden

Starting point:  Henningsvær ( see map ) Duration:   2 hours round trip Difficulty: Easy to moderate

This short and steady hike up Glomtinden (419m) ends with nice views, including the mountain of Vågakallen (943m) set against the ocean to the south, and the town of Svolvaer to the east. The round trip takes approximately 2 hours with an elevation gain of 300m. From Henningsvær, take the main road north and turn right at the E10. The trail begins at the first left hand turnoff after the road hits the lake (Rørvikvatnet).

8. Justadtinden

Hiking Lofoten - Justaltinden

Starting point:  Stamsund ( see map ) Duration:   2-4 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate

This is a gentle, longer walk (12km round trip) to one of Vestvågøy's highest peaks at 738m. The mountains of Vestvågøy aren’t as dramatic as those on Moskenesøya, but the hike to Justadtinden offers a nice range of Lofoten scenery and is one of the easiest, big views on the Islands. Access to the trail is approximately 4km east of Leknes on the 815 toward Stamsund.

9. Å to Stokkavika

Starting point: Village of Å ( see map ) Duration:   6-8 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

The scenic village of Å is the end of the road on the Lofoten Islands—this is the terminus of Highway E10. Starting from the west side of the village, the hike crosses the outer edge of Moskenesøya with western views along the way. Allow 6-8 hours for the round trip, which has steep sections and can be soggy. Make sure to keep an eye out for the trail as you hike, which is partially marked.

10. Nusfjord to Nesland

Starting point:  Nusfjord ( see map ) Duration:   3-4 hours round trip Difficulty: Moderate

Start from the bay in Nusfjord (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on Moskenesøya, and follow the coastal path south to Nesland. The round trip takes approximately 3–4 hours with moderate scrambling. Inquire in Nusfjord before you set out for a map and more details.

Editor’s Note: We took great pride in creating this list of Lofoten hikes, but we also wanted to give praise to photographer Cody Duncan and his site www.68north.com . Cody spends a lot of time on the Islands each year and has done a great job documenting Lofoten hikes with maps and photos. You can check out his write-ups on hikes like Reinebringen and Kvalvika Beach , for example. Cody also is a terrific landscape photographer and you can read our interview with him here .

Guide to the best hiking in Lofoten – 15 best Lofoten hikes!

The Lofoten Islands , an archipelago in Norway that lies within the Arctic Circle, is a beautiful place that’s famed for its hiking, climbing, kayaking, and outdoor adventures.

Lofoten hiking is often steep, rocky, and muddy but it’s also incredibly beautiful.

From the summit of many of the hikes in Lofoten, you’ll glance down onto turquoise waters, islands, and fjords and see hundreds more mountain peaks all around you.

We spent 6 weeks living in Lofoten as part of our extended honeymoon. We got married in Tromso and drove to Lofoten from there, stopping off for hikes in Sommaroy and ticking off some of the best Senja hikes along the way.

If you’re a keen hiker (like me!) then check out this list and guide to the best hiking trails in Lofoten Islands Northern Norway.

These hikes include a mix of easy hikes in Lofoten Islands and strenuous hikes, busy and well-known hikes to less well-known hikes, and everything in between.

These are undoubtedly some of the best hikes in Lofoten and I’ve included links to all my Lofoten hiking guides which go into more detail about each hike.

Before you go hiking in the Lofoten Islands, you should bear in my the following tips and advice to ensure the trails stay open and can be used by others after you.

  • You need to be a member of DNT if you want to go in or stay in, the DNT cabins in Lofoten. Learn more here.
  • Always practice leave no trace ethics. Not sure what those are?  Get a refresher here .
  • Remember to respect the terrain, environment, and other users while you are enjoying the trails.
  • Follow the three Ts—trip planning, training, and taking the essentials.
  • Don’t leave home without  your 10 essentials . They could save your life!
  • Do not walk off the trail – this damages the environment which is very fragile and leads to trail closures being put in place.
  • Read up on the Lofoten Code of Conduct to minimise your impact.
  • You cannot fly drones in Lofotodden National Park
  • Trails in Lofoten are often steep and have exposure or require scrambling . Don’t push yourself if you’re not comfortable.
  • Lofoten Islands hiking is often very muddy so wear good hiking boots or shoes and gaiters. Do not stray from the trail to try and avoid the mud as this just makes the muddy area even larger.
  • Short distances, steep trails : Many of these best trails for hiking Lofoten Islands are quite short (under 10 km), but they’re very steep so don’t underestimate them!
  • I use hiking apps like AllTrails as my Lofoten hiking map

AllTrails is my go-to hiking app for finding, planning, and navigating while I’m out on the trails. With offline maps on AllTrails+ you can be confident you’re still on the right track, even without mobile signal.

djevelporten hike svolvaer

Guide to the Lofoten best hikes

view from Fløya ridge trail

1. Fløya hike, Djevelporten hike and the Svolværgeit

  • Distance: 5.6 km
  • Duration: 3-5 hours
  • Difficulty : Hard
  • Elevation: 532 m
  • Trail map on AllTrails

The Fløya, Djevelporten, and Svolværgeita hike in Svolvær , Lofoten can all be hiked in one trip (with the exception of Svolværgeita which needs climbing knowledge and experience).

It’s a steep trail up the sherpa steps from the trailhead to Djevelporten; a rock that lies horizontally between two rock faces.

If you continue onto Fløya then you’ll get incredible views of Svolvær and the surrounding scenery as well as of Svolværgeita down below.

This is one of the best things to do in the town of Svolvaer.

delp matmora lofoten hike

2. Matmora hike + Delp

  • Distance: 9.5 km
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Elevation: 826 m

Matmora in Lofoten is a hike towards the east of the archipelago and is a great point-to-point or loop trail with stunning views.

After a steep hike up, you arrive at the plateau on Delp where you can look down at the incredible colors of the water below you.

From here, there’s a gorgeous rocky ridgeline that takes you up to the summit of Matmora.

Kvalvika beach from Ryten

3. Kvalvika beach hike and Ryten hike

  • Distance: 7.2 km
  • Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Elevation: 586 m

The Kvalvika Beach hike takes you to one of the best beaches in Lofoten . You can also combine it with a walk up to the top of Ryten which looks down onto the beach and I’d highly recommend doing this.

This beach is hike-in only which means you’ll have to put in some effort to get there, but you can also camp on the beach which is a magical experience. It’s a great way to enjoy a Lofoten multi day hike too.

While the beach is stunning (and one of the best places for camping in Lofoten) you can also hike up to Ryten for a stunning view of Kvalvika Beach down below you.

henninsgvær heia festvågtind hike

4. Festvågtind Hike and Heia in Henningsvær

To Festvagtinden

  • Distance: 2.4 km
  • Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Elevation: 500 m

The cute town of Henninsgsvær is best viewed from the top of the Festvågtind hike or Heia (slightly lower down and easier to get to).

The hike is one of the best things to do in Henningsvaer Lofoten .

It starts from just north of Henningsvær and starts with some climbing over very large boulders before taking you up a steep, rocky trail.

The views from up here are beautiful from both Heia and Festvågtind. You’ll also get to visit a little lake up here and it’s such a good place for a view of Henningsvaer.

reinebringen hike lofoten

5. Reinebringen hike Lofoten

  • Distance: 5.8 km
  • Elevation: 553 m

The Reinebringen hike is one of the most famous hikes in Lofoten and gets very busy.

It’s a challenging hike that’s definitely a bit of a grind on the way up as you trudge up the sherpa steps that make up the trail.

Once you reach the top of the steps, you get an incredible view of Reine and the islands around it, as well as off to the mountains and fjords which take you to Bunes and Horseid beaches.

The view from the top is what makes it the best hike Lofoten has to offer in many people’s eyes and it’s definitely unique and such a Lofoten view.

It was one of my favorite hikes we did in Lofoten ( the favorite is below) and we somehow got it all to ourselves! Perks of visiting Lofoten in winter and off-season I guess.

tjeldbergtind hike svolvaer

6. Tjeldbergtind hike

  • Distance: 4 km
  • Duration: 1-2 hours
  • Difficulty : Moderate
  • Elevation: 319 m

This was one of my favorite hikes in Svolvær that we ended up doing twice during our trip to Lofoten in winter.

On our second trip, as we hiked Tjeldbergtinden , we got the most incredible pink sky colors during Polar Night in Lofoten that I just couldn’t stop staring at.

This relatively easy hike has two viewpoints. I think it’s hands down one of the best easy hikes in Lofoten Islands Norway.

There’s the peak of Tjeldbergtind and then a lower-down viewpoint which has an awesome view of Svolvær and the Fløya/Djevelporten/Svolværgeita area.

dnt nøkksætra hike svolvær

7. Nøkksætra

Also near Svolvær is the DNT Nøkksætra cabin which you can access by hiking the Nokksaetra trail from Svolvaer, or near the Svolvaer Alpineklubb.

You can both hike and ski up to this cabin depending on the season and along the way, you’ll walk alongside two separate lakes, pass the Svolvær Alpinklubb ski hill, and then head up into the mountains.

We saw no one for the whole time we were on this hike which was really special and the views on the way back down were incredible!

unstad eggum hike

8. Eggum Lofoten to Unstad trail

  • Distance: 7.1 km
  • Elevation: 112 m

Eggum and Unstad are two beautiful beaches in Lofoten.

Unstad is known for the Unstad Arctic Surf cafe and accommodation and the waves which are ideal for surfing.

Eggum is well known for the amphitheater and the Eggum head statue along the coastal trail.

You can walk from Unstad to Eggum along a rocky and narrow coastal path that gets steep in places.

If you do the whole trail then you’ll pass by a lighthouse too.

The trail is easier from Eggum and there’s more to see on that end too.

uttakliev beach

9. Haukland beach to Uttalkiev beach

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Difficulty : Easy
  • Elevation: 229 m

If you’re looking for easy hiking in Lofoten, then check out the coastal trail between Haukland Beach and Uttakliev Beach.

These two beaches in Lofoten are some of the prettiest beaches in Lofoten and are great for both seeing the Northern Lights in Lofoten in winter and the midnight sun in summer.

They’re also some of the best beaches for camping in Lofoten.

You need to pay to park at both beaches so it’s best to visit both by walking between them on the flat and easy coastal trail.

Walking from Haukland Beach to Uttalkiev Beach is one of the best easy hikes Lofoten has to offer visitors to the area.

hiking in lofoten horseid beach

10. Horseid beach

  • Distance: 9.7 km
  • Elevation: 453 m

To get to Horseid beach you first need to get a ferry from Reine.

Once you arrive it’s about a 2-hour hike from the ferry to the beach.

This hike is best done as an overnight camping trip since you’ll have to match your hike times up with the ferry schedule and this trip shouldn’t be rushed!

bunes beach hike lofoten norway

11. Bunes Beach

  • Distance: 6.3 km
  • Elevation: 190 m

Bunes Beach is another beautiful place for hiking in Lofoten that requires you to take a ferry to start with.

After you get off the ferry, it’s around an hour to get to Bunes Beach and this area is perfect for backpacking Lofoten Islands.

The beach is larger than you’d first think; almost a km across and 0.5 km wide.

The mountains behind you as you stare out to see are very impressive and you can get a great sunset here in late summer and early autumn.

hiking in lofoten munken

12. Munken and DNT Munkebu cabin

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Elevation: 613 m

Near Reinebringen is Munken and DNT Munkebu hut.

The hike starts from Sørvågen near Å and takes about 2.5-3 hours each way (5-7 hours round trip).

There is some scrambling on this hike but chains are provided in some instances.

This is great as an overnight hike since there’s a cabin and opportunities for camping.

However, you will need to be a DNT member and get the key to the cabin from Sørvågen Commerce with your membership card to access the hut.

haen værøy hiking in lofoten

13. Håen on Værøy

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Elevation: 602 m

The Håen hike, also known as Håheia, is on the island of Værøy in Lofoten.

To get to the trailhead for the Haen hike, you’ll need to take a ferry and then you can hike up Håen Norway for incredible views of some unique mountain formations.

The hike is relatively easy and the views are well worth the effort!

mannen hike lofoten

14. Mannen + Veggen

  • Distance: 4.2 km
  • Elevation: 363 m

Mannen and Veggen are two hikes near Uttalkiev and Haukland Beach. It’s one of the Lofoten top hikes that you’ve likely heard of before or come across while planning your trip to Lofoten.

Mannen is an easy hike that gives you great views of Haukland Beach from above. Veggen, on the other hand, gives you incredible views of Uttakliev beach.

Of the two, Veggen is quieter than Mannen and harder.

eltofttuva hike lofoten

15. Elofttuva

The Elofttuva hike was one of my favorites from all our hiking in Lofoten.

It’s a relatively easy hike that’s much less known than some of the other Lofoten hikes on this list.

The hike climbs up to the summit of Elofttuva where you get incredible views of Himmelstinden in front of you as well as the lakes and fjords below.

Where to stay in Lofoten Islands Norway

Booking accommodation in Lofoten in winter is much easier than in the summer.

In the summer, Lofoten is a busy, busy place, and accommodation prices can be sky-high or booked up months in advance.

In the winter, however, many places have spare rooms with last-minute availability and prices are generally cheaper.

Especially if you’re visiting in November and December before ski tourism has kicked in.

While we stayed in Airbnbs so that we could have access to a bit more space, and a full kitchen, if I was visiting for a shorter period of time, these are the Lofoten Islands hotels I would book for tackling the best hikes in Lofoten Islands.

  • Nusfjord Arctic Resort : Beautiful fishing cabins right on the water with mountain views and access to a wood-fired hot tub.
  • Trevarefabrikken: Lofoten’s coolest hangout spot in trendy Henningsvaer with stylish rooms and access to a beautiful sauna.
  • Svinøya Rorbuer : Set in Svolvaer, this hotel has both hotel-style rooms as well as 1-bedroom Lofoten cabins all with beautiful views.
  • Rostad Retro Rorbuer: This beautiful fishing cabin in Reine is right on the water. It’s super cozy with beautiful views and a kitchen.
  • Skårungen Hotel: Tucked away between Svolvaer and Henningsvaer, the Skårungen Hotel is in a picturesque area where guests have access to a restaurant and cafe and a spa, hot tub, and sauna. It would be a lovely place to spend a trip in Lofoten in winter!

How to get to Lofoten Islands, Norway

We drove to Lofoten from Tromsø. The whole journey takes around 6 hours from Tromsø to Svolvaer, and around 8 hours if you’re going from Tromsø down to Å at the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands.

We broke this journey up by visiting Senja and Sommarøy on the way down to Lofoten, which I’d highly recommend if you’re visiting Lofoten in winter too.

We rented a car for our whole 2 months in Norway from Europcar at the Tromsø airport and it came with studded winter tires which are a must if you’re driving a lot in Lofoten in winter – it gets icy and snowy!

To do the best hikes in Lofoten Islands I highly recommend having a car since it makes it much easier to get to the trailheads.

I use comparison sites like DiscoverCars and RentalCars to book my car rentals as it’s easy to check prices and compare the best deals!

Flights to Lofoten airports

There are two small airports in Lofoten, plus a third on the island of Røst. The two main Lofoten Islands airports are Svolvaer and Leknes.

These airports are domestic airports only so you’ll need to transfer to a larger airport before boarding your plane to Lofoten.

There are a few direct flights between Svolvaer and Oslo in the spring and summer months.

In fact, you’ll usually have to transfer a couple of times. Flights from Oslo to Lofoten usually stop at Bodø before traveling onwards to Svolvaer or Leknes.

If you’re flying from outside of Norway to Lofoten, that means changing at Oslo and again at Bodø.

You could also fly to Harstad or Narvik, both of which are cities close to the ‘entrance’ to Lofoten.

Skyscanner is what I use to find cheap flights.

Ferry to Lofoten

There are a couple of ferries to Lofoten. The most well-known one is from Bodø to Moskenes. This is a car ferry service and possibly the most comfortable.

Alternatively, you can take the Hurtigruten coastal ferry from Bodø to Stansund and Svolvaer. This is a more expensive option and not all Hurtigruten ships take cars.

If you’re not taking the ferry with a car, the Bodø to Svolvaer ferry might be a great option for you. It’s passenger-only and an express boat so gets you there quicker than the Bodø – Moskenes ferry.

If you’re looking to limit your flights a little, you can fly to Bodø, rent a car and then take the Bodø to Lofoten ferry which arrives at Moskenes in the south of Lofoten.

The ferry to Lofoten can get very busy in the summer which is a downside to visiting Lofoten in summer in general: crowds.

However, in winter in Lofoten, things are much quieter. But you will need to make sure you get to the ferry terminal in time as there are only two sailings a day to Lofoten in winter.

You can check the timetables for the ferry to Lofoten from Bodø here .

The ferry to Moskenes from Bodø takes about 3 hours and, on a clear day, you’ll get incredible views of the mountains as you approach Lofoten.

However, the journey can be rough so not the best idea if you’re someone who gets seasick!

Train to Lofoten

There is no train to Lofoten. Bodø, or Narvik, is the end of the line depending on which direction you’re coming from.

If you’re traveling from Norway or Sweden to Bodø or Narvik, it’s best to book in advance . That way you can get cheaper tickets.

From Bodø you can take the ferry to Lofoten. From Narvik, you can take a bus, or drive to Lofoten.

You can book trains online in advance by using TheTrainline.com which makes it super easy to plan your journey ahead of time!

Bus to Lofoten

There is no direct bus to get all the way to Lofoten from Oslo. The easiest way is to take the train to Bodø then take a bus if not driving or taking the ferry.

If you’re coming from the north, such as Tromsø to Lofoten, then take a bus to Narvik and then switch to go to Lofoten.

The bus from Narvik to Lofoten goes all the way to the end of the road at Å, though you may need to change in Svolvaer or Leknes; especially with reduced service in winter.

Bu information for buses to Lofoten can be found here:  reisnordland.no

lofoten trip guide

Getting around the Lofoten Islands

The easiest way to get around the Lofoten Islands is if you have a car. Getting from city to city is easy enough by bus, but if you want to get to trailheads for the Lofoten hiking trails and backcountry skiing in Lofoten, then you really will need a car.

Bus schedules in the winter are a bit reduced and in some cases, there’ll only be one or two buses a day.

We rented our car in Tromsø and drove it down from there. If you’re travelling through Narvik or Bodø then it might be best to hire a car there as it can be cheaper than renting a car in Lofoten.

We also found ‘Rent a Wreck’ which is in Lofoten and other towns across Norway. While the reviews for them weren’t the best at the Tromsø location, we did see quite a few of these around Lofoten and they didn’t look too much like wrecks!

Their rental prices are a lot cheaper so might be worth the risk.

Værøy Mountain Hikes

Sitting far out to the west, across the fabled at turbulent waters of the Moskensstraumen, sits the small island of Værøy. With a highest point of 450 meters, this small island should not be underestimated, as it offers a wide variety of well established and scenic hikes. In fact, the hiking infrastructure on Værøy is much better developed than on the main Lofoten Islands. Though in turn, the relaxed nature of this small island feels like Lofoten was 20 or more years ago, before the era of over crowded social media and bucket list travel destinations.

Moskenesøy Mountain Hikes

With its steep mountain peaks rising directly from the sea, Moskenesøy is iconic Lofoten. The village or Reine is a main hub of summer hiking and tourism on Lofoten, and the start of Lofoten’s most famous hike and view, Reinebrinen (448m). The northern coast of the island is only accessible by foot and is home to Lofotodden national park. Here some of Lofoten’s most spectacular mountain scenery can be found, including Bunes, Horseid, and Kvalvika beaches, with Helvetestind, Branntuva, and Ryten mountain peaks rising above.

The highest peaks on the island, 1029 m Hermannsdalstind, is long and winding hike to one of Lofoten’s best views over endless peaks fading into the distance. The easy 45 minute hike to Kvalvika beach makes it one of the island’s most popular destinations for wild camping and to watch the midnight sun on a warm summer evening. And though many of Lofoten’s most popular hiking destinations can be found on Moskenesøy, there are still many trail-less hidden valleys and peaks for the more adventurous traveler looking to pick a route across to find themselves alone in the beautiful wild west of Lofoten.

Flakstadøy Mountain Hikes

The tiny village of Nusfjord and the beaches and campgrounds at Ramberg and Skagsanden are perhaps Flakstadøy’s most popular areas in summer. Otherwise, much of the island is skipped over as it sits between the more popular Moskenesøy to the west and the larger town of Leknes to the east. Outside of the popular hikes like Volandstind and Stornappstind, many of Flakstadøy’s (often trail-less) mountain peaks receive only a handful of visitor each year.

The island offers a wide variety of scenic hikes, with the highest point, 934 meter Stjerntind, reached only with a bit of rock climbing, making it one of the most-difficult municipal high-points in Norway. A long coastal walk along the shores of Nappstraumen will lead you to Storbåthalleren cave, with 5000 year old history from Lofoten’s earliest inhabitants. The peaks of Hestræva and Nesheia are formed from a sandy, almost desert like landscape running down the eastern side of the island. If you are looking for an relatively easy hikes for an escape from the summer crowds, many of the hikes on Flakstadøy will be the answer.

Vestvågøy Mountain Hikes

Vestvågøy is located in the heart of Lofoten. With the airport at Leknes, it is a main transport hub into and out of the islands. A large valley of pastures and farmland dominates the central part of the island, while mountain ranges rise from the southern and northern areas of the island. With softer terrain than much of western Lofoten, many longer hikes can be found here, such as Justadtind or Smordalskammen, that feel more like a normal hiking trail than the ’straight up the side of a mountain’ trail typical of Lofoten. Though plenty of those hikes can be found on Vestvågøy as well, such as Veggen, Offersøykammen, or the high 900+m peaks of Himmeltindan.

Calm sheltered bays and white sand beaches will see both locals and tourists alike crowding the beaches of Haukland and Vik on a 20˚c summer day – though the water looks warmer than it is! Unstad beach, the surfing capital of Arctic Norway sees a younger crowd spending weeks in their camper vans, surfing, drying wetsuits on the rocks, sitting around evening campfires, or hiking up the surrounding easy peaks of Helligberget or Nonstind to catch the midnight sun.

Gimsøy Mountain Hikes

Gimsøy is the smallest of Lofoten’s E10 connected islands. A series of while sand beaches are spread across the flat northern side of the island, and home to the unique experience of midnight sun golfing. This isolated small peak of Hoven rises from the flatlands over the northwester corner of the islands, offering an easy hike with 360˚ views. More formidable mountains rise along the eastern side of the island, where more sheep than people can be found even in the height of summer.

Austvågøy Mountain Hikes

The harbor town of Svolvær is the self-proclaimed capital of Lofoten and here one can find the only real ‘city tourism’ on Lofoten: waterfront hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs, boat tours, etc. With the airport just east of town, daily stops from the Hurtigruten coastal ferry and an express boat to Bodø, Svolvær is another of Lofoten’s main transport hubs. It is a hustling and bustling place in summer. Further west, Henningsvær is one of northern Norway’s biggest rock climbing destinations and the town itself has seen a rise in popularity among young Norwegians in the last years and now also offers a large selection of hotels, restaurants, and pubs. Fløya rising over Svolvær and Festvågtind rising over Henningsvær are both popular hikes with spectacular views.

Austvågøy overall offers a great variety of mountains and hikes, and it the home to Lofoten’s highest, and difficult to reach, peak, 1147 meter high Higravtindan. The landscape is more forested and sheltered than western Lofoten, though many routes can be found criss-crossing the rocky peaks of the central high mountain area. Rising from the sandy beaches on the northern side of the island is 787 meter Matmora, reached by perhaps the most spectacular ridge hike on Lofoten.

Hiking in Lofoten: 10 epic hikes on Lofoten Islands

lofoten hiking tours

Planning a trip to the Lofoten Islands and looking for some amazing hiking trails? Then you’ve come to the right place. Below, I’ve listed the 10 best hikes in Lofoten that will leave you awestruck.

The Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway is a place that stole my heart and totally exceeded my expectations. With its steep mountains, magnificent fjords, and white sand beaches , it’s a region where Mother Nature has created some truly astonishing landscapes. And one of the best ways to explore these landscapes is to go hiking in Lofoten.

During my recent campervan trip in Norway , I made it a priority to explore as many hiking trails in Lofoten as I could. Needless to say, it was the right decision. These islands quickly became one of my favorite hiking destinations in the entire world.

In this Lofoten hiking guide, I’m sharing the best trails I hiked as well as a few extra trails I’d love to hike the next time I visit the region. Further below, I’ve also included a map where you can see the exact locations of each of these hikes.

Disclosure: This article contains affiliate links from which I may make a commission at no additional cost to you if you make a purchase.

Best hikes in Lofoten

From heart-racing ascents up steep mountainsides to calmer walks through idyllic scenery, Lofoten has an abundance of cool hiking trails, each more beautiful than the last.

Here’s where to find the best hiking in Lofoten:

1) Håen hike

A steep mountain ridge rising out of turquoise sea at Værøy island, viewed from Håen peak, one of the best hikes in Lofoten, Norway

Distance: 3.2km (2 mi) one way Difficulty: easy Time: 1.5 hours to the top Parking: Håen parking lot Trailhead: Håen parking lot

Håen, also known as Håheia, is a scenic mountain peak on the remote island of Værøy. It offers one of the most surreal views in all of Lofoten and is a relatively easy hike, at least by Norwegian standards.

To get to Værøy island, you can take the free ferry from Bodø or Moskenes. The starting point and parking lot for the Håen hike are situated northwest of the village of Sørland and marked as ‘Håen Parkering’ on Google Maps.

To get to the summit of Håen, you can either walk almost the entire way up on an old paved military road or choose one of the trails on either side of the road. Once you’re at the top, you’ll have to walk through a radar station to get to the viewpoint behind it.

A woman in a yellow jacket standing on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the dramatic mountains of Værøy island

There you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the entire western peninsula of Værøy and its green mountains, neon blue waters and white sand beach. It’s the kind of place that will make you feel like you’ve arrived at the edge of the world. This was definitely one of the highlights of my Lofoten itinerary and one of my favorite viewpoints in all of Lofoten.

2) Reinebringen hike

A woman sitting on a rock overlooking a picturesque fjord at Reinebringen peak, one of the best hikes in Lofoten Islands

Distance: 1.4km (0.9 mi) one way Difficulty: medium Time: 1 hour to the top Parking: Steffenakken parking lot or the outer harbor of Reine Trailhead: Southern end of Ramsvik Tunnel

The hike to the top of Reinebringen is often considered one of the best hikes in Lofoten – and rightfully so! Located near the village of Reine, this 448m (1470 ft) tall mountain is relatively easy to access and boasts a phenomenal view of the beautiful Reinefjord and the dramatic peaks around it.

Although the trail leading to the summit of Reinebringen is short, it is quite steep and requires climbing 1978 stone steps. These steps were built by Nepalese Sherpas over the years 2016-2021 to make it safer for people to do this famous Lofoten hike and to protect the ground from erosion.

Soft golden light and dramatic mountains viewed from Reinebringen during Midnight Sun

It is only recommended to hike Reinebringen from May to September. As it’s a highly popular hike, you can expect to see lots of people on the trail in the summer months. But if you do the hike later in the evening – which is a fantastic idea during the Midnight Sun period – you might have the place to yourself like we did.

For more essential tips and practical information about this hike, read my detailed guide on how to hike Reinebringen .

3) Festvågtind hike

small islands and steep craggy mountains rising straight from the sea, viewed from Festvågtind peak, one of the best hikes in Lofoten

Distance: 1.9km (1.2 mi) one way Difficulty: medium Time: 1-1.5 hours to the top Parking: Festvågtind parking lot Trailhead: 300m (0.2 mi) east of Festvågtind parking

Rising 541m (1775 ft) above the sea, Festvågtind is yet another popular summit hike on the Lofoten Islands. The mountain sits on the island of Austvågøya, right next to the fishing village of Henningsvær, which is a popular tourist destination in Lofoten.

The trail leading to the top is rocky and quite steep and can get a bit muddy after it’s been raining. At the summit, however, your efforts will be rewarded with an amazing 360-degree view of the surrounding scenery and the village of Henningsvær spread out on small islands.

A woman sitting on a rock with a panoramic view of the sea around Lofoten Islands

On a day with good visibility, you can even see mainland Norway from here. Apparently, this summit is also an excellent place for watching the Midnight Sun.

On your way back down, I recommend making a stop at the Heiavatnet Lake, which is approximately halfway down the trail. In the summer, you can go for an invigorating dip in the lake’s chilly waters. It’s the perfect way to cool down after this exhausting hike.

4) Torsketunga hike (Presten)

A woman sitting on a rock protruding from mountainside at Torsketunga, one of the most unique hikes in Lofoten

Distance: 2.6km (1.6 mi) one way Difficulty: medium/hard Time: 1.5-2 hours to the top Parking: Festvågtind parking lot Trailhead: 300m (0.2 mi) east of Festvågtind parking

Torsketunga, also known as Presten, is one of the best hikes in Lofoten for those looking for an adrenaline rush. It features an epic viewpoint and one of the coolest photo spots in Lofoten – a slab of rock that sticks out of the mountainside and has a sheer drop below it. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views of fjords, mountains and the turquoise sea.

Although the hike to Torsketunga is basically just an extension of the popular Festvågtind hike, it still remains a hidden gem and barely receives any hikers. This is most likely due to the somewhat difficult access to the viewpoint.

A woman standing on a rock overlooking a picturesque fjord with turquoise water at the Torsketunga hike

The trail has some exposed sections with almost vertical drops next to it and a few parts that require a bit of rock climbing. Because of this, I only recommend doing the Torsketunga hike if you’re not scared of heights and are confident in your ability to climb a few meters.

I’m going to be honest – there were a few moments towards the end of this hike where I was a bit hesitant to continue and was wondering whether it was actually safe. I’d 100% do it again though as it was worth all the effort! You just have to be extra careful.

5) Ryten & Kvalvika Beach hike

steep green mountains, white sand and bright blue sea at Kvalvika Beach, one of the best beaches in Lofoten

Distance: 7km (4.3 mi) (to the summit and to the beach) Difficulty: medium Time: 3-3.5 hours (to the summit and to the beach)  Parking: Innersand Parking Trailhead: Innersand Parking

The trail to the summit of Ryten and Kvalvika Beach is another one of the best Lofoten hiking trails, attracting lots of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts during the summer. Rising to a height of 543m (1782 ft), the peak of Ryten provides a breathtaking view of Kvalvika Beach below.

The secluded Kvalvika Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Lofoten and is a popular spot for wild camping. Nestled between tall mountains that rise straight from the ocean, this otherworldly beach is only accessible by foot.

There are a couple of different trails you can take to get to Kvalvika and Ryten. We chose the one starting from Innersand as it has the largest parking area but you can also start from the Torsfjorden side. Unfortunately, we didn’t see that iconic bird’s-eye-view of the beach from Ryten because the summit was wrapped in thick clouds when we were there.

Although this hike is by far the longest hike on this list, it’s not overly challenging or steep and can be done by anyone with a reasonable fitness level. Unlike the other Lofoten hikes in this blog post, Kvalvika Beach and Ryten are accessible even during the winter but you might need hiking crampons or snowshoes.

6) Mannen hike

chalk-white sand and neon blue water of Haukland Beach viewed from Mannen peak, one of the easiest hikes in Lofoten

Distance: 2km (1.2 mi) one way Difficulty: easy Time: <1 hour to the top Parking: Haukland Beach parking lot Trailhead: Across the road from the parking lot

Mannen is a small mountain peak overlooking the postcard-perfect Haukland Beach, one of the best beaches in Lofoten . The hike to its summit is short but very rewarding and offers a fantastic panorama of the surrounding landscape. You’ll probably also meet some cute sheep along the way.

With the verdant meadows, chalk-white beaches, azure water and mountains in the background, the view from the top of Mannen really shows off the stunning natural beauty of Lofoten.

A woman standing on top of the Mannen peak with a view over Haukland Beach with its blue-green water and white sand

Although Mannen is considered one of the easy hikes in Lofoten, I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a walk in the park. The trail is always uphill and can be muddy after rain. As you get closer to the summit, the trail meanders along the ridge of the mountain and has some exposed sections where you have to be careful.

During our hike, it was extremely windy at the top of Mannen. Bring a windbreaker!

7) Offersøykammen hike

A woman standing on a rock on top of Offersøykammen mountain

Distance: 1.3km (0.8 mi) Difficulty: easy/medium  Time: <1 hour to the top Parking: ‘Skreda – Nasjonale Turistveger’ rest stop Trailhead: Across the road from Lofothytter

Next up is the Offersøykammen peak on Vestvågøya island. This is an easy hike by Lofoten standards but for the average person, the more accurate rating would probably be medium difficulty. Although the hike is short, it’s a steep and steady climb straight up the mountainside with an elevation gain of 436m (1430 ft).

Once you’ve made your way to the top, you can enjoy unobstructed 360-degree views of the unique scenery of the Lofoten Islands. On one side, you’ll see vast boggy flats dotted with ponds and on the other, mountains and bays with emerald water.

A view of green mountains along the coastline of Lofoten Islands viewed from Offersøykammen hike

It’s best to do the Offersøykammen hike on a clear sunny day as the views will be a lot more impressive and the landscapes will look more colorful.

We did the hike along the short and steep route, which I’ve also marked on the map that you’ll find further below in this article. However, there’s also the option of taking a longer and flatter hiking route, which starts just before the Nappstraum tunnel. From there, the hike to the summit takes about 2 hours.

Other Lofoten hikes to consider

Due to lack of time, I didn’t manage to fit the following Lofoten hiking trails into my itinerary but they are high on my list for the next time I visit the region.

Horseid Beach hike : Hidden between massive granite mountains, this is a beautiful isolated beach with a huge patch of white sand. To get there, you’ll first need to take a boat from the village of Reine and then hike for two hours until you arrive in this little slice of paradise. As the beach is in quite a remote location, it doesn’t receive nearly as many visitors as most of the other beaches. People say that it’s also a wonderful place for camping.

Munken hike : The hike to the 797m (2615 ft) Munken mountain leads you through some of the most dramatic landscapes in Lofoten and offers amazing views of fjords, lakes and the mighty Hermannsdalstinden peak. It’s a great alternative to Reinebringen if you want to avoid crowds. The Munken hike is commonly done as a two-day hike with an overnight stay in Munkebu hut.

Kollfjellet hike : The Kollfjellet peak overlooks the picturesque bay of Flakstadpollen and is still very little known among hikers. Although it’s a short hike, there’s no trail leading to this peak. This means that you have to make your way through a dense birch forest to get to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with an insane view of the turquoise bay below.

I took the photo of Flakstadpollen below with my drone but the view from Kollfjellet is similar.

A drone photo of Flakstadpollen Bay and its beautiful water in various shades of blue

Tip: If you’re looking for more awesome hikes in this part of Norway, consider also visiting Senja Island . This stunning lesser-known island is home to some jaw-dropping mountains and great hiking trails. I highly recommend the hike to the peak of Hesten.

Lofoten hiking map

On the map below, you can see where each of the above-mentioned Lofoten hikes is located. Click on the icon in the top left corner of the map for more details.

Things to know before hiking in Lofoten

  • The best time to go hiking in Lofoten is from mid-June to the end of September. Outside of this period, it’s likely that there’s snow on the mountains, which makes many of the trails inaccessible or dangerous. It’s possible to do winter hiking in Lofoten but you’d have to stick to flatter trails, have proper gear and check avalanche forecasts beforehand.
  • If your goal is to see the Midnight Sun, visit the Lofoten Islands between May 27 and July 17 (the exact dates vary a bit depending on the location). However, if you want to see the Northern Lights and still be able to hike before the snow arrives, head there in September. July and August are the warmest months but also the busiest.
  • In general, hiking trails in Lofoten are not very long but they are steep and therefore require a good level of fitness. Nevertheless, it’s possible to find easy hikes in Lofoten, which don’t have as much elevation gain, like the hike to Bunes Beach or the coastal walk from Haukland Beach to Uttakleiv Beach.
  • The Lofoten Islands are notorious for their unpredictable weather. Even in summer, weather conditions can change very quickly. One minute it’s warm and sunny and the next it’s windy and pouring rain. For the most accurate weather forecast, check the Yr.no app.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. You should bring a lot of layers, which you can take off or put on when needed as well as a rainproof jacket. Hat and gloves are also nice to have just in case, even in the summer. Remember that the temperature at the top of a mountain is often colder than down at the trailhead.
  • Wear appropriate shoes when hiking in Lofoten, not flip-flops or Converse. Ideally, you should have waterproof hiking boots. They are especially useful after it’s been raining as trails tend to get muddy.
  • Bring insect repellent. Although the Lofoten Islands don’t have lots of mosquitoes, you can still encounter them in some places and they can ruin your hike if you’re unprepared.

Where to stay in Lofoten

Accommodation options on the Lofoten Islands range from modern hotels and cozy cabins to simple campsites and quaint rorbu huts (traditional fishermen’s cabins converted into apartments).

If you’re visiting Lofoten in the summer, book your accommodation well in advance as the best places get fully booked quickly. Throughout the rest of the year, you can be a bit more spontaneous.

Below are my recommendations on the best places to stay in Lofoten. They are all conveniently located in central Lofoten, from where you can easily take day trips to the different attractions and hiking trails.

BUDGET: FURU Hostel & Café – A cozy lakeside hostel with beautifully decorated private rooms and dorms. There’s a sauna with a view over the lake and guests can also rent SUPs or kayaks. An excellent option in Lofoten for budget travelers.

MID-RANGE: Hattvika Lodge – Situated in the active fishing village of Ballstad, this seafront lodge has some of the most stylish cabins in Lofoten. They also have the more traditional rorbu huts if you prefer those. There’s an on-site restaurant and a sauna with a sea view as well.

LUXURY: Nusfjord Arctic Resort – This is a historic property with beautifully restored fishermen’s cabins and a fantastic location on the edge of the picturesque Nusfjord. In addition to its charming cabins, the resort has its own restaurant, a tavern and a spa with a hot tub overlooking the fjord.

Hiking in Lofoten: Final thoughts

The Lofoten Islands really is a paradise for hikers and I’m itching to visit them again to explore more of these stunning landscapes. I hope that you enjoyed reading about the best hikes in Lofoten and that you got some good ideas for planning your own trip.

Hiking Lofoten : tips and hikes ideas ( with maps)

After 10 days of facing the elements in the Lofoten, we give you all our advice to prepare your hikes (+ 5 itinerary ideas with maps)

Last Update: 12/02/2024 0 COMMENT

We couldn’t possibly be a few hundred kilometers away from the Lofoten Islands and not stop by (as a reminder we were in Swedish Lapland for a 7-day trek on the Kungsleden )… it was just too tempting! We have to say that the Lofoten is the kind of destination that appeals to us at 200%.

It’s nature with a big N, endless hiking possibilities, mystical landscapes straight out of the Viking show

And then, since I got lost on a few articles written by my friend Julien (from the excellent blog Sentiers du Phoenix. It’s in french but check out the pics 😉 ), I simply dreamed of hiking the Lofoten Islands in Norway .

hiking lofoten

Well if you follow us on Instagram , you know that we didn’t exactly had a dream weather during our 10 days on the Lofoten Islands (understand that we may have had 6 hours of sun in 10 days 😉 and especially a lot of rain and wind)… But it’s part of the game when you travel above these latitudes! And if you ask me, it’s also part of the Lofoten charm . So if you have the courage to go out and face the elements, you will often be rewarded with wild landscapes that you simply won’t find anywhere else.

So I thought that after 10 days in these difficult conditions, I could be able to give you 2-3 tips for hiking in the Lofotens .

  • Why hiking in the Lofoten?
  • The weather in the Lofoten islands

Hiking trails and difficulty of the terrain

  • Useful resources for hiking in the Lofoten
  • Plage de Kvalvika et Ryten

Festvagtinden

Why hiking in the lofoten .

If you come to Lofoten, it is not usually to relax in a beautiful hotel or to enjoy good restaurants… No! We come to the Lofoten to admire its sharp mountains that come straight out of the sea, to explore its valleys and fjords, to discover a still wild and preserved nature or perhaps also to admire the northern lights. Lofoten is THE “Outdoor” destination and hiking is probably the easiest and cheapest way to explore it. Want to know more about our budget? So you should have a look at our special article about our travel budget in Lofoten

reine lofoten

Moreover, in the Scandinavian countries (I told you about that here just after the trip), access to nature is sacred and guaranteed to everyone (it is part of the law). This means that in the Lofoten (and this applies to Norway, Sweden and Finland) you can walk around where you want, pitch your tent for free and sleep within a reasonable distance of houses, picking mushrooms and berries, sailing and fishing without a permit… This complete freedom of access to nature is unique and hiking with your backpack and tent is an excellent way to enjoy it ( not forgetting to respect nature and leave no trace after your passage )

Finally, the Lofoten have become quite touristy in recent years. But from the moment you leave the E10 road (the main road that crosses the Lofotens) to look for hiking trails, you will move away considerably from the mass. You will certainly meet some other hikers on the trails but nothing that should ruin your pleasure.

Weather in Lofoten

North of the Arctic Circle, the weather is often very unstable . You can have sun, rain, wind, mist and even snow all in the same day! (I tell you from experience)… So I’d like to tell you that there are times in the year when the weather is more clement, but according to my readings it’s almost impossible to predict . I have read about the experiences of people who had very nice weather in September (unlike us) while some experienced hell in the middle of July when the weather is supposed to be the best. The only certainty is that at one time or another, you’re going to get a good shower on your head or some nice gusts… But it’s part of the charm of the Lofoten I would say 😉

weather in the Lofoten

So if you want my opinion, the best thing is not to rely too much on the weather and to choose the date of the trip according to what you want to see or do. The ideal time for hiking in Lofoten is between mid-June and the end of September . Before mid-June, there may still be a lot of snow on the mountains and from the end of September, temperatures drop significantly and snow returns to lower altitudes.

  • From mid-June to August : You should know that until mid-July, the sun never sets and you can experience the famous midnight sun . During this period, the days are very long, the colours are green and bright and the temperatures rather mild. On the other hand, July – August is, as everywhere else, the holiday period and Lofoten is a very popular destination for Norwegians in summer. So if you want to come during this period, perhaps you should come at the end of June, early July and late August.
  • Septembre : The nights are getting longer and the temperatures are much colder. But it is also an opportunity to observe the northern lights and the pretty colours of autumn. At the end of September, it is not uncommon for snow to have already returned to the top of the mountains.

lofoten northern lights

For weather forecasts, the best site for the Lofoten is yr.no . You can either use their website or their very good mobile app. And if you want to see the cloud, rain or wind conditions live, I recommend the very good Storm Radar app .

festvagtinden

You will probably have already noticed it by looking at pictures of the Lofoten, but the terrain is rather steep in the region. Mountains are generally quite steep and the elevations can be very significant over often short distances. So even if there are easier hikes than others, the itineraries are, on average, rather demanding in Lofoten . Moreover, if you are used to well-marked trails such as in the Alps, you will be surprised. Indeed, in Lofoten the markings are practically non-existent and you will often follow the tracks left by other hikers rather than real trails.

Here are some tips to follow before going on a hike in the Lofoten:

  • Prepare the itinerary of your hike as well as you can and make sure you know the difficulty of the itinerary. Ideally, I advise you to start with the GPX trace of the hike already loaded in a mapping app (more details below). This will help you a lot during the hike if the path is not very visible.
  • Avoid going on exposed trails when the weather is not good or the terrain is wet . There are quite a few hikes in the lofoten that can be dangerous when the conditions are bad. Besides, as we’ve had a lot of bad weather, I’ll suggest you some routes that are easily doable even if the weather is not great a bit lower in this article.
  • If you are hiking alone, always tell someone where you are going . Even if you are a good hiker and you’re used to this, you are never completely safe from a small fall or a sprain ankle. With the instability of the weather and the difficulty of the terrain, even a small injury can create a complicated situation.
  • Always have a warm and waterproof layer in your backpack (a hat and small gloves too). Even if it is 20 degrees at the beginning of your hike, the weather can change at any time, which can lead to large temperature differences. If you want to know what equipment we had with us on this trip, come and have a look at this article .

Useful resources and applications for Lofoten trekking

Although I will give you some hikes suggestions below, there are some reference sites in terms of hiking that will allow you to plan beautiful itineraries according to your level all over the Lofoten.

  • Rando-Lofoten : It is THE reference site when it comes to preparing a hike in the Lofoten. You will find nearly a hundred itineraries spread over all the Lofoten Islands. There is also a very active forum on which you can ask your questions if you didn’t already find your answers there.
  • 68 north : A beautiful site called after the latitude on which the Lofoten Islands is located. You will find many hiking routes and a lot of information about the Lofotens in the 4 seasons. And the icing on the cake, the author of the site is a very good photographer… which should give you an urgent desire to visit these wonders.

Once you have found the hike that suits you (you can usually download the gpx file of the hike from the previous sites), you can also use these apps that have been quite useful to us during these 10 days in the Lofoten.

  • AllTrails : the hiking app we’ve been using on a daily basis since 2019. It is also the application we use to integrate the maps in our website (below). For each map, you will find a button to directly download the trail of the hike in the format of your choice (GPX, KML, Garmin, etc.). To download our tracks, you will simply need to create an account (free) on the application. Note that if you wish to access the maps offline from Alltrails, you will have to upgrade to the AllTrails+ version (it is of course free otherwise). With our link , take advantage of a 30% discount on your annual subscription.
  • Outdooractive (ex ViewRanger): This application is a reference in the world of hiking. The free maps with elevation differences are already very extensive (for the moment I have never had to buy maps) and it is possible to download them for offline use. Of course you can add the gpx of your itineraries on the map to make it easier for you to navigate during your hikes.
  • I’m going to repeat myself, but use weather apps like yr.no and StormRadar . As I said, you don’t want to find yourself on a difficult hike in bad weather in Lofoten. So keep a close eye on the weather.

It is almost impossible to get to the beginning of the hikes without having a car in the Lofoten (unless you are hitchhiking). The few buses travel only along the E10 and are rather expensive. This is why car rental is so popular in Lofoten (most tourists have a rental car).

So we compared a lot of car rental car companies in the Lofotens and as usual, RentalCars is the cheapest! I advise you to go to the RentalCars website and enter Lofoten or Narvik in the search location to find the cheapest vehicle and be as independent as possible in the Lofotens.

5 easy hikes ideas in case of bad weather in the Lofoten

On our side, we didn’t have a dream weather during those 10 days in Lofoten… far from it! So we had to “deal with it” as we say. So we looked for fairly short and not too difficult itineraries that we could do as soon as a break came out. So that didn’t stop us from being wet several times, but we were at least rewarded with some wonderful views that only Lofoten can offer! (honestly, you can climb any mountain in Lofoten and the view will be magnificent! It’s not just the Reinebringen…)

nordheia hike

Useful infos

  • Distance 5kms
  • Elevation +- 540m
  • Difficulty easy
  • Start à 200m à droite de la 861. Non loin du pont entre les îles de Gimsoya et Vestvagoya

This hike is really accessible to everyone and does not represent any difficulty. For once in the Lofoten, the trail is well marked and the slope is rather gentle up to the summit. First we go up into a small wood to reach large meadows that we will never leave until the summit. We arrive at the height of a small lake when the path turns left to climb even more. Then simply follow the cairns to the top where a splendid 360 degree view awaits you.

In our case on this hike, we were treated to all kind of weather… rain, snow, hail, sometimes quite strong winds and even some weak rays of sunshine. But the view was worth it, don’t you think?

Nonstinden (Ballstad)

Nonstinden hike

Useful Infos

  • Distance 4,2kms
  • Elevation +- 460m
  • Difficulty medium
  • Length 2-3h
  • Start small car park on the side of the road that goes to the right at the end of the 818 that arrives in Ballstad

We came across this hike a little bit by chance, we’ll say. We had come to Ballstad with the car and we saw a path that went up to a viewpoint that looked nice. As a slight clearing was looming on the horizon, we decided to go up and see it with our own eyes. After a very steep first part, we arrive on a plateau with a gorgeous view on the village of Ballstad. We continue to climb on the right side of the plateau to the top of the Nonstinden from where we have a magnificent 360 degree view of the islands. We go down the ridge on the left side of the plateau. At one point, we turn left to come back towards the steep passage we had taken on the way up and which goes down to the car park. Be aware that at this junction it is also possible to continue straight ahead and go down the path that goes around the cape and also returns to the car park by the coast.

For this hike, we almost gave up at the beginning because we took the snow after only 5 minutes of walking. But we had the good idea to continue because we were then treated to one of the most beautiful clearing of this 10-day stay in Lofoten 😉

Kvalvika beach and Ryten

ryten Lofoten hike

  • Distance 12,3kms
  • Elevation +- 860m
  • Length 5-6h ou à faire sur 2 jours (avec bivouac à Kvalvika)
  • Start Parking of Litlkrystad

ryten kvalvika hike

The view from the top of the Ryten on Kvalvika Beach is one of the most beautiful (and famous) of the Lofotens. We had imagined a 2-day itinerary starting from the Litlkrystad car park (green flag) to bivouac on Kvalvika beach, climb to the Ryten at sunset and return the next day. Normally, it’s easy. It takes 1-2 hours to get to Kavalvika beach, 2-3 hours to get to Ryten and back down to the beach and 1-2 hours either to get back to Litlkrystad or to the other car park (indicated by the red flag).

But for us it was a little more complicated… we already needed 3 hours to get to the beach from Litlkrystad because the trail was so wet (but almost impracticable). So I sprinted alone to climb to the top of the Ryten just in time to see the sunset. After going down, we set up the tent and fixed it with stones. And despite that, we still had one of the worst nights of our lives in a tent. The wind shifted in the middle of the night and we started to have big gusts of side winds that caused the tent to bend… add to that a good dose of rain until the next morning 11am. In the end, we were more afraid than hurt because the tent held up well but we didn’t sleep at all that night.

ryten-kvalvika-1

  • Distance 9,7kms
  • Elevation +784m -768m
  • Length 4-5h
  • Start Parkin just before the entrance of Delp village

The hike up to the top of Matmora is a beautiful traverse that presents few difficulties with spectacular landscapes! We start at the car park just before the village of Delp following the signs for Matmora. It goes up quite steeply from the beginning but you quickly reach a plateau that offers very beautiful landscapes on the fjords and mountains around. We follow the path along the plateau to the left and then follow the ridge with the summit of Matmora as a backdrop. The ridge is a little narrow in places but does not present any difficulty. We reach the very mineral summit (with an huge kern) by following the red markings. The descent is steeper and shorter but not more difficult.

During my hike, I had a nice clearing during the whole climb. The finish at the top was a little more difficult because it had already snowed a little at the top. Then I had to hurry back down because the bad weather was coming. It didn’t miss because I caught snow and then rain all the way down 😉

matmora-1

  • Distance 2,8kms
  • Elevation +- 500m
  • Difficulty medium/hard
  • Start parking before the bridges of Henningsvaer

We finish this article in style with the hike that I preferred in the Lofoten… but also the one that was the most difficult (but not so difficult either). This is the kind of hike that gives you a little insight into the kind of slope you can have in Lofoten but never beyond the limits of what is reasonable either. It’s easy, from the road it seems that the Festvagtinden is impossible to climb… and yet. We cross the road and take the path behind the trees. The path immediately climbs steeply into a large scree block. As you climb up, you always stay to the left and ignore the paths that go to the right. From a certain level, you pass over a lake which gives a superb view with the sea in the background. The trail then continues to the top and is steeper and steeper (if you are afraid of heights, it may not be a hike for you). The path leads to a ridge and then turns left to the top with an absolutely breathtaking view of Henningsvaer and its small islets. On the way down, I advise you to turn left to the lake to make a loop.

For this hike I had a nice weather window except for a little snow on the way down. On the other hand, I met several people on the way who were in difficulty because they didn’t have enough experience or good shoes (like converse…). If you are not sure about what you can do or if you are afraid of heights, don’t go on this hike! Same thing if the weather is not good.

I really hope you enjoyed this article about hiking in the Lofoten and my pictures as well. Honestly I was blown away by these northern Norwegian islands even though the weather put our nerves to the test. After that I only showed you our most beautiful pictures of the Lofotens, but don’t forget that we spent a good part of our time waiting in the car or in cafés hoping that the weather would calm down 😉 . But that’s also what Lofoten are all about and I really believe that if you decide to visit these islands too, you must come with the desire to face the elements, to go out as much as possible even if the weather is not great. And if you approach the Lofotens with this state of mind, you will be rewarded, believe me!

16 Stunning Hikes in Lofoten

Hiking · Norway

matmora lofoten

When we decided to visit Northern Norway, we definitely wanted to hike in Lofoten islands. More, we had a vision of beautiful mountains rising from the sea, rocky peaks and completing all the best hikes in Lofoten! Enjoying breath-taking views of villages from mountain tops.

We never thought of boggy paths, strong winds, low cloud and rainy days. Hope you are smiling at this point, as I managed to catch you here and that your vision is similar to ours.

We have visited Lofoten twice; first, in mid-August and this first visit was rather wet, damp and gloomy; we often ended up with boots completely drenched. We have not walked as much as planned and kept trying to chase the sun most of the time. I guess what I am trying to say is: keep dreaming of amazing views but be prepared for rain, wind and low temperatures, even in the summer! Check out this article to learn how to prepare for a visit to Lofoten and what to expect!

As we all know there is not much fun in being cold and drenched.  This did happened to us, feeling a bit unfulfilled after the first visit, we returned to Lofoten second time in mid-July following year (I know lucky us!), and I am so glad we did. Second visit was a totally different experience – we enjoyed midnight sun, sunny & warm days and not much rain. We maybe used rain jackets once, if ever. Some paths were still boggy but not to the same extend as previous year.

So you probably already see that I am trying to let you learn from our experience, you need to be well prepared for your hiking holidays in Lofoten islands!  As beautiful as the archipelago is, Lofoten’s weather is unpredictable and can change rapidly.

A few facts about Lofoten’s mountains:

  • the trails are often very steep and boggy
  • weather conditions can vary even between the neighbouring islands
  • the top of the mountain can feel much colder than the trail head below
  • even easy trails in Lofoten may be harder than what one is used to
  • most trails are unmarked but normally the path is well trodden
  • often there is very limited parking space at trail heads, so it’s best to start your hike early in the morning
  • finding a trail head can sometimes be tricky
  • navigation is not normally a problem, but be aware of the drops or cliffs in misty or cloudy conditions
  • IMPORTANT: Reinebringen isn’t the only mountain with amazing views! In fact, every peak provides stunning views. However, Reinebringen viewpoint is the busiest trail on Lofoten! Personally we opted out, so you won’t find any info about Reinebringen in this post.
  • you can easily use the online map for navigation, we planned most hikes using online Norgeskart map (link)   which comes very handy as it reflects most hiking trails and paths! Update: There is now also a Norgeskart App   available, which is awesome!

And here it is, a compilation of 16 Most Stunning Hikes in Lofoten archipelago; l isted by island, starting from west to east.

Tindstinden Lofoten

view from Tindstinden summit ridge

1.Tindstinden 490 masl

Difficulty : moderate/hard Distance : 5 km Total time : 3 hours Elevation gain: 460 metres

Judging by the distance and height of Tindstinden, don’t make a mistake and think that a hike to its top is going to be a chilled, easy walk to a viewpoint.

In order to conquer Tindstinden you’ll have to find your way thru grass-and-rock meadow at the head of lake Stuvdalsvatnet; the meadow is far from flat or even. Further, you’ll have to pass several dips (some spots are secured with ropes or chains to ensure safe crossing). And that’s before you actually get to the foot of the mountain and start the steep climb!

Tindstinden is an exciting mountain, you won’t be bored along the way, most importantly once you reach higher ground you’ll be awed by stunning panorama over Moskenesoya island!

The ridge is a mix of grass and rock, wide enough to feel comfortable and focus on the scenery rather than stress out and fight vertigo. Of course, there are narrower sections along the way, but not very exposed. It was worth the effort, wasn’t it?! To return, carefully retrace your steps down.

What we enjoyed about hiking up to Tindstinden’s top: the hike is varied and exciting! Summit views were amazing, from the top we saw most of Moskenesoya island, we were directly over village A, the view stretched as far as small islands at the western end of archipelago, including Vaeroy. best hikes in lofoten

view from Munken

2.Munken 797 masl and Munkebu Hut

Difficulty : moderate with some steep sections Distance : 12km Total time : 7-8 hours Elevation gain:  910 metres

Hike to the top of Munken will take you thru some of Lofoten’s most dramatic landscapes, at the western end of Lofotodden National Park . The easiest and most popular trail to Munken starts in Sorvagen and passes the beautifully located Munkebu Hut . Initially the trail rises gently as is runs along two lakes, at the top of the second lake you’ll finally start gaining height, climbing thru low woodland, negotiating rock ribs. This very section is secured with chains to make it easier to climb up smooth rock, and later safely climb down on your return. As you climb higher the terrain becomes wilder and scenery breath-taking. You’ll be surrounded by high mountains and rocky tops. A short section of the path follows a stream with lovely cascades, then the terrain opens up and soon you’ll be on high ground, and already see Munkebu Hut in the distance! It’s beautifully located over two small lakes, with a bit of luck the lakes will reflect the surrounding rocky summits!

Munkebu Hut is a perfect spot to have a break on your way to Munken, which is approximately 45-60 mins of steep climb away. Although the highest top of Munken is inaccessible (rock climbing only!),  view from its spacious northern top will satisfy the most demanding hiker! It doesn’t only stand among other dramatic mountains of Moskenesoya; it also reveals fjords and lakes! There is so much to take in from the top of Munken! The hike is incredibly rewarding, in exchange for a 3-3.5 hours walk you’ll enjoy some of the best views in Lofoten, including the mighty Hermannsdalstinden! Once you’re satisfied, retrace your steps to Munkebu hut and further to the car park.

Munken is definitely of the peaks not to be missed during your visit in Lofoten. The views are simply stunning and breathe-taking, the whole trail is beautiful. There is one very boggy section, which even during dry weather was challenging to cross, so we definitely do recommend to wear proper hiking, waterproof boots.

Hermannsdalstinden

at the top of Hermannsdalstinden

3.Hermannsdalstinden 1029 masl

Difficulty : hard/expert Distance : 23 km Time : 12-13 hours Elevation gain: 1774 metres

Hike up to Hermannsdalstinden’s top, the highest mountain of Moskenesoya, was the hardest we completed in Lofoten; despite splitting it over 2 days with an overnight camp near  Munkebu Hut. Hermannsdalstinden is legendary for its difficulty and length, hence we believe that the best way to conquer it, is by splitting the hike over 2 days . Want to find detail of how we did it? Read this article.

Set off from Sorvagen in the morning and walk to Munkebu Hut . The trail to the hut is rather popular and you will meet many hikers along the way. However, many of them will finish at the hut or walk up to Munken, and only very few continue up to the top of Hermannsdalstinden.

Munkebu hut is surrounded by jagged peaks and small lakes, I guarantee that when you see it on the approach, it will take your breath away. What a perfect location for an overnight stay!

It felt safe to leave our belongings in the tent and carry forward only the most necessary items. Hermannsdalstinden stands proud (and still far away) from Munkebu Hut, so further hike to the summit is a strenuous walk/scramble of remaining 4 km which takes approximately 3.5 -4 hours and passes some of the most beautiful landmarks in Lofoten.

Views along the way are stunning in all directions and give great excuses to stop and rest. Final ascent to Hermannsdalstinden is hard, very steep at times and route finding can be tricky, especially crossing the boulderfield just below the summit. Otherwise the path is well visible and easy to follow, despite being pretty much unmarked.  There are couple of steep and tricky sections, which can cause greater difficulties when wet.  Therefore climbing this peak should not be taken lightly.

What we enjoyed about hiking up to Hermannsdalstinden: overnight camp in the wild mountains, we  enjoyed the time at the top, all by ourselves! Have I mentioned the scenery? Basically it doesn’t get any better on the island, you are at the roof of Moskenesoya, after all!

Lofotodden national park norway

view to Kvlvika Beach from slopes of Ryten

4.Ryten 543 masl and Kvalvika Beach

Difficulty : moderate Distance : 7.5 km Time : 5-6 hours Elevation gain : 560 metres

Unique landscape of Lofoten islands give almost endless opportunities for hikes with beach view, and it’s really easy to find a splendid mountain hike finished off with a visit to a sandy beach! Hike to Ryten offers much more than just dramatic views, it can easily be connected with exploration of Kvalvika, one of the most iconic beaches in Lofoten! We recommend doing the hard part first and start the day with a climb to Ryten, and if you feel like it, a steep descent to the beach. Keep in mind that the initial section of Ryten hike can be wet, so waterproof boots are recommended! Once you reach the top of Ryten you’re in for unspoilt and endless ocean views, as well as a glimpse of Kvalvika. To get to the beach: descent from Ryten to the lake and take the small path down, along a stream. Be careful as this section is steep and the path is rough. In no time you’ll be at the beach! Make the most of it (!)  explore the amazing stripe of white sand take a break, sunbathe!

During our visit to Lofoten we greatly enjoyed the Ryten and Kvalvika Beach hike, check out this article for detailed information and a map.

Roren and Yttersand

view from Roren to Yttersand Beach

5.Roren 294 masl and Yttersand Beach

Difficulty : easy Distance : 2 km Time : 2.5 hours Elevation gain : 290 metres

A short hike to Roren should definitely be included in your Lofoten itinerary. Despite being only a viewpoint rather than a separate mountain Roren offers astonishing views to Flakstad bay and island, as well as the eastern tip of Moskenesoya, and most importantly to Ytterand Beach!

What’s so special about a hike to Roren?  It’s short enough to be easily manageable in the evening, in time for sun setting over the nearby beach! Roren can be describes as a bump along the hill line, not exactly a top, but a decent viewpoint, and we strongly encourage you to give it a go! In exchange for a 2 hours hike you’ll be rewarded with outwardly scenery! The beach below will invite you for a stroll once you descend to the sea level. If you feel like, you can explore the hill further, it’s a flat-ish plateau overgrown with berry bushes, moss and grass; it gives a lot of freedom to roam and explore further corners of the hill edge!!!

Stornappstinden Lofote

view from Stornappstinden Lofoten

6.Stornappstinden 740 masl

Difficulty : moderate with some steep sections Distance : 5.6 km Time : 4 hours Elevation gain : 683 metres

Stornappstinden is one of the peaks at the eastern edge of Flakstadoya island, which makes it a perfect lookout to islands further east, with the nearest landmarks being Offersoykammen, and famous Haukland Beach area . Standing at the top of Stornappstinden you’ll see other amazing peaks, lakes, fjords and I guarantee you won’t ever have enough of it!

A hike to Stornappstinden starts at the ski centre in Napp, initially it rises gently as it follows ski trails, but soon the path reaches the foot of the mountain and a steep, strenuous climb begins. Despite being steep and eroded the path is easy to follow and reaches the top quite suddenly! As soon as you see the view you’re sure to forget all the effort and sweat required to climb Stornappstinden. The sights are simply breath-taking! All the small islands down below, mini-beaches and rugged coast, mountains stretching in all directions make an amazing impression and prove endless beauty of Lofoten.

Stornappstinden top is very spacious, take tour time to enjoy the view!  Once your eyes and soul is satisfied and you’ve rested carefully retrace your steps down to the ski centre.

Don’t hesitate to find out more about the hike to Stornsppstinden, with stunning photos and a hiking map!

Justadtinden Lofoten

view along the trail to Justadtinden

7.Justadtinden 738 masl

Difficulty : easy/moderate Distance : 13 km Time : 4-5 hours Elevation gain : 700 metres

We can certainly say that Justadtinden is the most underrated hike in Lofoten. It’s located near Leknes and I think it’s overshadowed by other amazing landmarks in the area, like the stunning Haukland and Utakleiv beaches .

Why you should hike to the top of Justadtinden? The trail is quite long as for Lofoten standards, hence not chosen by many. Along the way you will find peace and meet only a handful of other fellow walkers at most.  Hiking experience is unlike in other parts of Lofoten, the path wanders around rocks and small dotty lakes, and gives the feeling of solitude. We really loved it!

The trail is unmarked but easy to follow. In terms of difficulty it’s a medium difficulty hike, with the greatest elevation gain at the direct climb to the summit. Final climb is steep but on a clear day you will be rewarded with stunning top views.

During our hike to Justadtinden the top was covered by clouds and we had no summit views whatsoever, but despite the fact we enjoyed the hike and the peaceful experience. Read our story to find the details of Justadtinden hike.

best hikes in lofoten

looking down to Haukland and Vik beach, from Veggen

8.Veggen 489 masl

Difficulty : moderate, but steep Distance : 2.8 km Time : 3 hours Elevation gain: 444 metres

Veggen is one of the two tops located exactly between Lofoten’s two most stunning beaches. A hike to Veggen offers amazing view to Uttakleiv beach as well as Haukland Beach, and other mountains in the area, as well as the wet lands near Leknes.

It’s a short hike, but not to be underestimated, as it’s very steep throughout . The best starting point to climb Veggen is Uttakleiv beach, see our dedicated article for detailed information.

Initially the trail passes lovely green meadows only to get to the hillside, and the climb begins. At first the path is muddy, as it follows a small stream, but as soon as you reach a saddle the path becomes perfectly dry, albeit incredibly steep. Take care climbing the heathery slope of Veggen, stunning views are there to distract you from the hardship of the climb. Fingers crossed you’ll spot a couple of eagles which nest on Veggen’s crags!

Final part of the hike, just before the very summit is a short grassy ridge, finished off with a cairn (pile of stones) at the western end. That’s the summit of Veggen, you made it! Take your time to take in the scenery, getting to that point did cost some effort, so don’t rush back! Enjoy the view of Haukland beach, below, on the left side, and its continuation Vik beach, as well as view to distant peaks of other islands. Veggen is a fantastic viewpoint over the beaches and this little corner of Lofoten and is noticeably less busy than Mannen.

best hikes in lofoten

hiking to Holandsmelen

9 .Holandsmelen 434 masl

Difficulty : easy Distance : 4 km Time : 2.5 hours Elevation gain : 410 metres

Holandsmelen is another example of a much overlooked hike, similarly to Justadtinden (above). This hill is overshadowed by its spectacular neighbour Mannen. Despite having a fabulous hiking experience on offer it stays relatively quiet, just being passed by crowds on their way to Haukland and Uttakleiv beaches.

Why you should include Holandsmelen in your Lofoten hiking itinerary? It’s a straightforward walk to hill directly over Vik beach! The difficulty of a hike to Holandsmelen is actually following the path. Let me explain, the hike starts at a small car park past Hogtaen (directions) . Initially follow a rough track up from the car park, towards the trees. Once you reach the tree line the track changes into a rough path which meanders along the deer fence. Soon you’ll come to an open space, like a high meadow, which you have to cross, Holandsmelen top is to your right. The grass and heather meadow is wet in places and you’ll find that it’s actually quite tricky to keep to the path still, what is more -the path will fork numerous times, or occasionally disappear. If you loose the path temporarily, simply walk directly towards the top of Holadsmelen, I guarantee you’ll come across another path sooner or later! Final approach to the top is the steepest section of the hike and will take you to the spacious rugged summit. Nearer the top the path becomes rocky, and once you reach the summit ridge, follow it to the left. Top of Holandsmelen is an unmarked, bump made of grass and stone. The most prominent landmarks seen from the summit are Vik and Haukland beach, Veggen and Mannen as well as Offersoykammen!

We expecially recommend a hike to Holandsmelen in the morning or late afternoon, to ensure you see the picturesque scenery around in warm, soft light.

best hikes in lofoten

Haukland Beach seen from Mannen

10.Mannen 400 masl

Difficulty : easy Distance : 4 km Time : 2-3 hours Elevation gain : 370 metres

Mannen, is by far, the most popular hiking destination in Haukland and Uttakleiv area! And that’s for several reasons: stunning views to the beaches, especially to Haukland beach, a fine hiking experience, a straightforward but incredibly rewarding hike to the best viewpoint in the area! A hike to Mannen cannot be overrated.

We admit, we were reluctant to conquer Mannen, due to its popularity, but eventually we did hike to the top, without regret! If we were to pick only one short hike in Haukland and Uttakleiv, undoubtedly it would be Mannen!

Getting to the top of Mannen requires some effort, initially you have to climb to the ridge over the Uttakleiv tunnel, then follow the gently rising ridge to the very top. There is a good path, for most of the way, wet in places with some muddy sections nearer the top.

The top is made of rock, grass and heather and quite spacious to accommodate many keen walkers!

We believe that Mannen is the most fantastic viewpoint over Haukland Beach as it rises directly above! Eagle-eye view of Haukland beach is spectacular; white sand surrounded by juicy green pastures and emerald water. The top also give a unique overview and insight of the Veggen hike.

You can hike to Mannen from Uttakleiv beach, but it’s much shorter from Haukland! On your way back, if you still fancy a further walk you can descent to Uttakleiv and retun to Haukland along the coastal path!

In Haukland / Uttakleiv area there are 3 hills which provide birds-eye overlook of the beaches, pastures and dunes; these are Veggen, Holandsmelen and Mannen (all detailed in this post!) , however we believe that Mannen provides the best hiking experience (despite the crowds) and the best views!

hiking to Hoven

11.Hoven 368 masl

by Oana from Wild Planet Blog

Difficulty : easy Distance : 3.8 km Time : 2 -3 hours Elevation gain : 350 metres

Hoven is a small peak located on the island of Gimsøya, rising to 368 metres above sea level. It offers great 360° coastal views over the fjords, Hovsvika beach and towards Vesterålen archipelago at northeast.

Hiking trail to the top of Hoven is probably one of the easiest trails in Lofoten archipelago, suitable for people of all ages and a great place to watch the midnight sun.

A total length of this hike is 3.8 km round trip and it took us around 2 hours to complete. To reach Hoven by car set up your navigation to a place called “Lofoten Links” (directions) , which is a golf course, located right next to the start of the trail (signposted).

Like all trails in Lofoten, there are some more demanding sections, but all is easily manageable thanks to the vegetation around the trail.

We visited Lofoten in mid August and the parking lot was almost empty with no parking fee.

During our visit, the weather was really sunny and dry, but it seems that even on a rainy day the track won’t be too slippery.

What I really liked about Hoven was that once you get to the peak there are several places to wander around, all while still having the possibility of experiencing some scary vertical cliffs if you wish to do so. This was also a great photography spot where you can capture the typical  landscape of Lofoten .

Hiking Matmora Lofoten

Hiking Matmora Lofoten

12.Matmora 787 masl

Difficulty : moderate Distance : 13 km Time : 6 hours Elevation gain : 844 metres

Matmora is well off the main Lofoten tourist route, hence it’s a peaceful and quiet hike. Starting at the northern end of Austvagoya island, a hiking trail to Matmora is perfect for those who seek tranquil ambience and solitude. Views along the way are amongst the best of Lofoten!

The hiking trail to Matmora can be divided into 3 sections. Initial steep climb on muddy path thru low woodland to reach a large plateau – the least pleasant section. Although hard going, the height is gained quickly! Once at the plateau, follow its edge towards higher ground and narrower ridge with two rock teeth! That was section 2. Finally past the teeth, start the final climb to the top of Matmora, it’s moderately steep, but not exposed and views are stunning! In no time you’ll be standing at the large cairn (pile of stone) marking mountain top!

Take your time to enjoy the view, it’s amazing in all directions! Having climbed dozens of Lofoten’s mountains we can honestly say that Matmora is the favourite! Thanks to the views along the trail which left us in awe, rugged and dramatic summit panorama with endless mountain ridges stretching between us and the horizon! Hiking experience itself was very enjoyable, with only one other group met along the way! Matmora is located among other beautiful mountains, fjords and lakes, the whole hike is plentiful in stunning viewpoints and breath-taking sights. A day spent hiking to Matmora will be the one to remember and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as we did! If you happen to visit Lofoten in the summer, we recommend hiking to Matmora in the afternoon or evening, to enjoy a never ending warm sunset light illuminating everything in sight! We climbed Matmora in the evening and loved the soft warm evening light, making the views extra-special! Find out more about a hike to Matmora!

view from Festvagtind

13.Festvagtind

by Laura from ‘ From Canyons to Clouds’

Difficulty : moderate Distance : 3.2 km Time : 2 -3 hours Elevation gain : 550 metres

Trail up to Festvågtind is a short and steep path to a unique (and epic) viewpoint overlooking the village of Henningsvær.

Often it is referred to as alternative to extremely overcrowded Reinebringen. However, its epic views make is also very busy and desirable peak for hikers. Hence, I recommend starting this hike early if you don’t want to be joined by hundreds of other hikers at the top!

The “trailhead” is on highway 816 and has no parking lot.  There is a large car park, just west of the starting point on road 816. It is marked as as “Festvågtind Car Park” on Google Maps  (directions)

It is a private, charged car park, payment is via a phone app. If you do not have the ability to download apps in Norway, this car park will not be an option for you.  There are many small spots along the side of the road for one or two vehicles, and a small lot for about 6 cars almost immediately past the trailhead.

The hike is about 1.6 km one-way, with about 550 meters of vertical gain.  The trail is steep, dry, sandy, and very eroded.  Bring hiking poles to help with descent!

When you start the hike, after about 50-100 metres, there is a fork in the trail, keep to the right ( this online map will help you ). At the next fork stay to the left if you want to head straight up the mountain, and stay to the right if you want to make a stop at Heiavatnet, a small lake used for swimming about halfway up the mountain.  I took the route to the left on the way up, and stopped at the lake on the way down.

The hike to the top took about 1 hour, including several water breaks.  The rocky summit provides 360-degree views with mountains to the north and east, beautiful blue water to the west, and Henningsvær to the south.  This hike is well worth the hour of effort and the crowds!

djevelporten and floya

Djevelporten and Floya, view to Svolvaer

14.Floya 590 masl & Djevelporten rock

Difficulty :  moderate/hard with steep initial ascent on the big boulders Distance : 5.5 km Time : 3-4 hours Elevation gain : 560 meters

Floya is the best known hike over the town of Svolvaer, which offers not only a unique experience, but incredible views over the island-based town, and coast! Again, this hike can be a fine alternative to Reinebringen.

Djevelporten can be easily compared to the famous Kjeragbolten near Stavanger. It’s more of a landmark than a viewpoint, which will dare you to step on a rock slab hung over the abyss. Many walkers visit Djevelporten slab on their way to Floya, and so did we.

The top of Floya is an exposed and tricky scramble, however for the best view over Svolvaer you can skip the top and by-pass towards the ridge end, which makes a much greater viewpoint!

Hiking trail to Floya and Djevelporten starts near a nursery in Svolvaer and requires good balance and hands on rock skill as the initial section consists of large boulders which you will have to hike on. It’s impossible to by-pass these large rocks, so it’s best to head on and climb over them.

Having passed the boulders the path, still rough, leaves the woodland and arrived to an open space. Finally you will see the destination, Floya – to the right, and Djevelporten- straight ahead you. The most difficult section is already past you, but to get to the viewpoints and the rock slab is still quite a hike! We recommend heading to Djevelporten first, so ignore all paths forking to the right and walk straight ahead to the narrow gap in rock, ahead. The closer you get to the rugged slopes accommodating Djevelporten, the steeper the path, as it zig-zags thru loose rock. Most likely, there will be a group of walkers awaiting their turn to step on Djevelporten slab, so if that’s your fancy don’t feel disheartened, just wait a bit for your turn!

Continue slight to the right towards the Floya top and ridge, alternatively follow one of the paths towards Floya, for the best views!

We have described our experience in detail in this blog. Follow this link to plan the amazing hike over Svolvaer!

floya and djevelporten hike

top of Blatinden

15.Blatinden 625 masl

Difficulty :  hard with steep initial ascent on the big boulders Distance : 9 km Time : 4-5 hours Elevation gain: 574 meters

All information above applies to hiking Blatinden, but another top -Tuva can be easily added (without much additional effort) once you descent to lake Tuvvatnet from Blatinden.

Despite being the most prominent mountain over Svolvaer, Blatinden is rarely climbed, being in the shadow of Floya and Djevelporten slab. Blatinden offers similar views and shares the initial section of the trail with Floya and Djelevporten, but you’re likely to be completely alone as soon as you leave the main Floya path.

Why should you hike to Blatinden? First of all, it’s a fantastic continuation of a Floya and Djevelporten hike, also Blatinden on its own is a fine hike to the highest top in the area!

To cllmb Blatinden follow the Floya and Djevelporten trail, initially, climb the boulders and once in the open follow the trail ahead to the small pond. At the pond turn left, yes, there is a faint path, marked with red dots every so often, follow it towards the steep slopes of Blatinden. Look out for a rock marked blue, on your right hand side, this is where you should leave the main path and start the steep climb to Blatinden (yes, the ascent path is marked blue).

Immediately you will realise that Blatinden is evidently less popular than Floya, the path is overgrown and hardly visible, but still easy to follow. In no time you’ll reach the ridge with views to eastern Lofoten, as well as good oversight of Floya, enjoy the scenery and use this spot to rest, as the next section, final ascent to Blatinden summit is very steep and requires a lot of effort!

Follow the zig-zaging trail to ascent a grassy slope and in no time you’ll be standing at the very summit of Blainden! We recommend to explore the summit area, climb the rocks and check out various vistas, before continuing further. We can guarantee that you will have a great sense of accomplishment once you step on the top of Blatinden! Looking at the mountain from Floya we imagined it to be hardly possible to climb Blatinden, but yeah, we did it! To return down to quiet suburbs of Svolvaer follow the path on the other side of Blatinden as it runs beneath a small ridge. On your way down, you can walk up to the top of one more mountain – Tuva. Read all about hiking to Blatinden it in this article.

We believe that Blatinden should be the most desired extension to Floya hike, and encourage you all to climb this majestic mountain! Without the crowds of Floya and Djevelporten, Blatinden offers a very fine and quiet hiking experience in the heart of busy Lofoten! One, not to be overlooked!

Floya and Djevelporten hike

peaceful residential areas of Svolvaer under Tuva

16.Tuva 477 masl

You can climb this small mountain together with Blatinden, as mentioned above.

However, if you only want to walk up to the top of Tuva, follow this desctiption.

Tuva is the least prominent top in the area, nonetheless it offers a fine hike and stunning views! We recommend to start the hike in Knutvika, quiet neighbourhood of Svolvaer. Using navigation apps (like offline Maps.me or mapy.cz ) find your way to lake Gronnasvatnet and find a well defined path at its western shores, this trail will take you steeply up, along  a stream, to a saddle between Tuva and Blatinden, just over a large lake Tuvvatnet. It’s a strenuous hike, but view from Tuva will reward your efforts generously!

Why is hike to Tuva worthwhile and why Tuva found a spot on ”the best hikes in Lofoten” list? It’s a fine hike in quiet surroundings, a bit off the beaten track, quite unknown. We only discovered it during a thorough analysis of a hiking map, looking for possible extensions of Floya hike. We stubbornly tried to find a way of climbing Blatinden and then we set our eyes on nearby Tuva,

We believe Floya, Blatinden and Tuva 3 peaks route is the best and most adventurous hike near Svolvaer! Tuva was an integral part of this experience and we were charmed by its views and peaceful trails!

Retrace your steps back to Knutvika, or alternatively extend the hike by climbing to Blatinden (the massive mountain opposite Tuva).

This blog was wonderful as we planned our hiking trip to Lofoten in July! Thank you for all the tips and detailed information, they were so useful! We did six day-hikes to six different locations which we picked out based mostly on your stories. (And even recommended your site to some other hikers along the way.) All of the hikes were amazing and we really lucked out with sunshine and warm weather. The trip couldn’t have been better! <3

Thanks for getting in touch Kaisa! We greatly appreciate your message. MOst importantly, we’re happy to have helped you with planning the Lofoten trip and incredibly glad you enjoyed the hikes! Seems that your trip was as amazing as our second visit to Lofoten, when we were blessed with near-perfect weather conditions! All the best!

  • Long-Distance Hiking

Travelers flock to Lofoten to take in the dramatic scenery and hike the trails. The most popular hike is arguably Reinebringen, and its trail has been recently upgraded with stone steps. It’s popularity though, has resulted in parking chaos, queues up the mountainside, and some dangerous situations.

To have a pleasant experience, try and hike early in the morning or later in the day. Even better, choose a different hike for a quieter trail and more unique experience. There are no bad views in Lofoten and any hike or viewpoint will make a mighty impression.

Terrain and difficulty

Since Lofoten is packed with mountains lined up along the sea, most of the popular hiking trails are to summits. That means tackling a lot of ups and downs on dirt and stone trails.

In addition to the total distance, check the elevation gain on a trail to get a good understanding of how tough it is. Some trails have exposure (steep drops) and there are no safety railings.

There are also routes for casual hikers and families. An easier summit is Nubben, by Ramberg Beach. The coastal trails and sandy beaches are also good options. See Bunes Beach, Nusfjord to Nesland, or some of the other trails around Nusfjord.

Suggested itineraries

If you plan on exploring the length of Lofoten, allocate at least four days. If you’re not traveling further in Northern Norway, such as to Senja or Tromsø, try to spend at least a week in Lofoten.

With an express boat connection from Bodø, Svolvær is a great starting point. From there, you can work your way through the islands and finish in Reine. From there, nearby Moskenes has a ferry connection back to Bodø making it an easy round trip.

For a shorter stay in Lofoten, consider using Reine as a base. Reine is on Moskensøya Island at the western end of Lofoten and has good facilities available, including popular rorbuer accommodation.

Most importantly, it provides easy access to hikes like Bunes Beach, Helvetestind and Munken. It’s just a short drive to Flakstadøya Island for more hikes and historic village of Nusfjord.

As in most of Northern Norway, the best time to go hiking in Lofoten is in July, August, and September. In these months, the trails will be clear of snow and the days are long. The average high temperature in this period is between 10 and 15°C, but high temperatures over 20°C do occur in July and August.

If you’re happy to stick to lower ground (and avoid the crowds) good hiking can be had from May. There are no hard and fast rules though and the true beginning and end of the seasons varies depending on snowfalls and general weather conditions.

The midnight sun arrives in Lofoten in late May and stays until mid-July. Very long days last into August meaning “night” hiking under the glow of the low-hanging sun is a fun option.

The white sandy beaches of Lofoten are without a doubt one of the scenic highlights. Swimming in the water though, is only for the brave. In July and August, the water temperature at Unstad Beach, a popular surfing spot, averages just 12°C.

Norway’s Lofoten Islands Hiking Adventure

Norway’s Lofoten Islands Hiking Adventure

At a glance, untamed norse goddess, activity level.

  • What's Included

Our 2024 Norway Trip is Confirmed. Let’s Go!

You: Overworked professional who eats standing up in the kitchen.

Also you: NORSE GODDESS OF FJORD-CAUGHT TORSK.

Go above your nerve (and the Arctic Circle) as you explore soulful mountains, mysterious fjords, and pristine beaches with zero trace of tourist keychains on our women’s adventure and hiking trip to Lofoten, Norway.

Over the course of 8 days, you’ll hike steep trails to iconic summits, sleep in colorful fishermen cabins (restored Rorbu) and coastal hotels, strengthen your body with local Norse cuisine, kayak deep into the heart of a fjord, and spend hours at sea catching the freshest dinner of your life.

Feel free to refer to yourself as Birgit from here on out.

The Lofoten Islands are slung across the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. It is a lonely, untamed wilderness that gifts visitors with Northern Lights in winter and midnight sun come summer.

You’ll be glad you stair-climbed to so many episodes of Schitts Creek – the rugged terrain thrusts you high above fjords, beaches, and vibrant villages (with opportunities for scrambling). We’ll summit Reinebringen, Mount Ryten, and Festvågtind followed by a paddling adventure deep into a fjord to explore the mountains from below.

Dine on traditional and locally sourced meals every day (expect lots of fish – the foundation of Lofoton’s civilization) and try your best to pronounce hårføner after few glasses of Akvavit. On your final day, trade hiking pants for fisherman’s coveralls as you reel in a catch and cook it all up in a local home with your sistas.

Day 1 - Welcome to Norway

Welcome to northern Norway – the gateway to the Lofoten Islands! Meet as a group in the lobby of our waterfront hotel for evening introductions and to share an invigorating dinner. Your Explorer Chick guide and local Norwegian guide will review the upcoming week and kickstart the SHE-nanigans.

Jet lag doesn’t stand a chance.

Accommodation : Waterfront hotel Meals : Welcome Dinner

Day 2 - Ferry to Lofoten and Hike to Reinebringen

Rise and shine Explorer Chicks – it’s island time! Grab packed breakfasts and lunches before a short walk to catch the ferry. Kick back for the 3-4 hour journey as we cruise across the Vestfjorden.

We’ll arrive in Moskenes ready to start our hiking adventure. Our objective? Reinebringen – one of the most iconic views in Lofoten. Thanks to a government funded project, the hike is a power stair climb with steps expertly constructed by Sherpas from Nepal. After freaking out over the summit view, we’ll kick back at the local cafe enjoying coffee or a beer.

Day 1 in Lofoten closes out with a drive to our first Rorbu – a traditional fishermen cabin that hugs the shores of the fjords beneath the mountains. (We won’t judge you for Instagramming the crap out of it.) Rorbu housed fishermen from all over Norway as far back as 1890. Don’t worry – they’ve been restored to the point of not smelling like cod.

Hiking : 2 miles, 1,476′ elevation gain/loss Hiking Time : 4 hours

Accommodation : Rorbuer (A colorful restored Fisherman Cabin) Meals : B-L-D

Day 3 - Kayaking the Reinefjorden

Pump up your paddling arms with a hearty breakfast. You’ll explore the secret inner-most curves of a fjord via kayak over the course of 4 hours. Peep mountaintops, birds of prey, and rugged beach shores from sea level while wondering how your life got so freaking good.

Come afternoon, return to the Rorbu for a traditional, locally sourced dinner.

Accommodation : Rorbuer (Same as Day 2) Meals : B-L-D

Day 4 - Hike to Kvalvika Beach and Mount Ryten

It’s another iconic day in Lofoten . Enjoy a drive to Kvalvika beach for a 45-minute hike before the ascent to Ryten. This summit has everything Lofoten is famous for – ridiculous beaches, towering mountains, turquoise fjords, and a perfectly jutted rock you can hook your legs over for the Gram.

If your muscles are hatin’ on you from yesterday, no worries! You can chill on the beach and enjoy the crashing waves. JUST DON’T FORGET ABOUT US.

Next, we carry on to our new digs for two nights, where we finish out the day in a steamy hot tub. Rest up with a modern hotel experience with incredible waterfront views. Bonus – they alert us if and when the Northern Lights make an appearance.

Hiking – Distance : 5 miles, Elevation Gain/loss: 1,805′ Hiking Time : 5 hours

Accommodation : Hotel (and with a little luck catch the Northern Lights) Meals : B-L-D

Day 5 - Hike Mount Hoven and Kick it on the Beach

Enjoy a slower morning with a relaxed breakfast. Lace up your boots for the second-to-last hiking adventure to the top of Mount Hoven. A direct path up and down gives us plenty of beach time. Grab your swimmie if you’re feeling bold to dip above the Arctic Circle! If you’d rather stay dry, sip on a coffee and soak up the scenery.

Dinner is super-special this evening with a 3-course Norwegian meal.

Hiking – Distance : 2.5 miles RT, Gain: 1,205′, Time: 4 hours

Accommodation : Hotel (same as Day 4) Meals : B-L-D

Day 6 - Hiking and Exploring Henningsvær

Final gains day! Hike to the tippy-top of Festvågtind to enjoy a unique view of the small inhabited islands that make up Henningsvær.

After breakfast, take a 30 minute transfer to Henningsvær and the hiking adventure. Today is flexible – if the terrain is too tough or the weather blows, there is an optional viewpoint half way up the hike that feels close enough to a summit. The total hike, if possible, takes 5-6 hours. The viewpoint takes 2-2.5 hours (including time for photos at the top!). The terrain is rocky and steep, with a small amount of exposure to the summit. But the trail is well worn and easy to follow, given it is one of the most famous hikes in Lofoten.

Take the afternoon to explore Henningsvær, one of Lofoten’s most iconic towns with a population of just 500. Henningsvær is home to Norway’s iconic Klatreskole – the school hardcore Norwegians travel to for instruction on climbing, skiing and mountaineering. Of course, it’s also home to shops and bakeries, primed for a carb crawl.

After filling up on mind-blowing seafood, we’ll drive to our second Rorbu and final accommodation change in Kabelvåg. Evening dips in the ocean are encouraged!

Hiking – Distance : 2.5 miles RT, Gain: 1,775′, Time: 5-6 hours

Accommodation : Rurbuer (Your second enchanting old fishermen cabin) Meals : B-L-D

Day 7 - Fishing and Dinners with Locals

The reason people settled on these imposing islands in the first place isn’t the spectacular scenery. Nope it’s what lies below the surface of the bountiful water: THE FISH. After many days of hiking and exploring, we spend a few hours out at sea literally trying to catch our dinner. Wait, what? Yep! After our little fishing expedition, we’ll be invited into a local home to dine – sea to table, baby.

Accommodation : Rurbuer (Same as Day 6) Meals : B-L-D

Day 8 - Farewell Lofoten

All good things must unfortunately come to an end. During our 2.5 hour drive to Harstad/Narvik Airport, we’ll share our unforgettable memories and bad jokes from our untamed, wild paradise.

Plan departures after 10am.

10 popular hikes in Lofoten

Hiking in Lofoten is possible for everybody! You can find trips suiting families, seniors and also the ones searching for the highest peaks.

The weather changes rapidly in Lofoten, so it is a good idea to study the weather forecast before hiking. Warm clothes is recommended, especially on longer trips. We also recommend booking an organised hike with a proffesional guide, please see your options  here.

When planning hikes in Lofoten we recommend buying a map with marked trails. Even if you are well-trained and an eager hiker, the Lofoten mountains can be rough and not always as easy as they seem!

Lofoten Links - Gimsøya Hov

HOVEN (368 m.o.s.)

The walk up Hoven on Gimsøya is excellent if you want to look at the midnight sun. Start at Hov by the golf links. A nice family trip.

THE DEVIL’S GATE (590 m.o.s.)

Just a short walk from the center of Svolvær lies the Devil’s Staircase (Djeveltrappa). A sherpa trail where you pass through the Devil’s Gate (Djevelporten) on your way up to Fløya. The parking area operates with a payment solution provided by Easy Park.

The trail starts from the parking lot, and after a short distance, you’ll reach the sherpa trail (locally known as Djeveltrappa). You’ll use your thighs actively and be rewarded with beautiful views and impressive rock formations along the way up, culminating in a majestic view at the top.

Approximately 2 hours one way.

Hemmingodden _ Ballstad

BALLSTADHEIA

Start at Kræmmervika in Ballstadlandet. Follow the path which is clearly visible along a buried water line up to Ballstadheia (approx. 200 m.a.s.l.). The first climb is quite steep. When you reach the top you can continue down to Græna. From there you can follow the path along the shore until you reach Vestvågøy’s southernmost point, which is a rock formation called Brurstolen. Continue past Åsengrova along the shore back to where the hike started.

Location (area) on Google Maps .

Return trip: about 4 hours.

Eggum - Nasjonale Turistveger

EGGUM – UNSTAD

Start from the fortress at Eggum and follow the road, which eventually turns into a path. The second part is more demanding before you reach the beach in Unstad. Particularly good views of the midnight sun here.

Return trip: 4 hours.

Kvalvika

KVALVIKA & RYTEN (543 m.o.s.)

Kvalvika is a spectacular beach surrounded by high mountains. The view from Ryten is the reason why this is one of the most popular hikes in Lofoten. Turn off the E10 to Fredvang and follow the road to the school in Fredvang. Go to Innersand and follow the sign to Einangen.

Read the full hiking guide here .

Return trip: about 3 hours.

Nusfjord Arctic Resort

NUSFJORD – NESLAND

Strenuous walk. About 300 metres south of the old school in Nusfjord, a cairned path leads to Nesland. About 200 m before Østre Nesland, there are some giant potholes by the shore. Nesland has Lofoten’s only watermill.

Start location on Google Maps .

Return trip: about 4 hours. There is lots of great hiking in Flakstad; contact the tourist information centre for some tips.

Reinebringen

REINEBRINGEN (448 m.o.s. / season: May – September)

One of the most popular hikes in Norway, is situated in the municipality of Moskenes. The view from Reinebringen is one of the most spectacular in Lofoten. Read the full guide here .

Duration: Approximately 1-1,5 hours. Height: 448 meters above sea level. Slope: 45 degrees. Distance: 2 km round trip.

It’s important to wear good hiking shoes, and please bring water. Don’t forget fully charged camera/mobile phone, so that you can bring your memories back home!

We recommend hiking this route between May and September.

Bunesstranda

BUNESSTRANDA

From Reine, take the boat to Vindstad to get to the Bunes beach. Follow the road from Vindstad to the end of the fjord and across a small strip of land down to Bunesstranda. This incredible sandy beach is worth the effort! The whole trip, including the boat, takes about 4 hours. The boat can also drop you off in Forsfjord, from where you can walk to Hermanndalstind, Munkebu and Sørvågen.

Værøy

HORNET (346 m.o.s.)

An enjoyable, fairly tough walk takes you past the school to Marka where the road ends. From here, either continue right up the path or road to Håheia , 438 m high, with an incredible panoramic view – or continue through a gravel pit and into beautiful Sørlandshagen. There are many paths to choose between here, but they all eventually lead to Nupsneset. Tip: follow the shore back, and enjoy the lovely pebble beach.

Vanntårnet

STEINKIRKA (bonus hike!)

The Yellow Trail is the shortest, about 0.5 km long, leading to the ruins of the 1835 stone church, consecrated in 1839 by Bishop Kierschow. It should have held 110 people, but only had 78 seats. The later chancel and sacristy were consecrated in 1883. More information can be found on the board nearby.

About 1.5 km long, the Blue Trail leads to Åndhammarn. Though only 10 metres high, Åndhammarn is a natural landmark and viewpoint on the island. There is no evidence to suggest that this was a place for spirits (‘ånder’), the name probably coming from the Norwegian ‘ørn’ (eagle). There used to be eagles’ nests here, and it is still an overwhelming sight to see flocks of eagles circling the crag.

The trail leads through a sheltered but flat and open area of bogs and shallow ponds. The vegetation is extremely diverse because of the huge variations in salinity.
