Malta to Sicily Ferry: Prices, Routes & More

Interested in taking the ferry from Malta to Sicily to discover all that it has to offer? You’ve come to the right place!

From how to take the ferry, the experience on board, and essential travel information, to the top places to visit, I’ll be highlighting the key points that will help you plan the ultimate trip using the Malta ferry to Sicily.

Ferry Route from Malta to Sicily

Since Sicily is known for its international connections with some of Europe’s biggest ferry companies, you can travel to mainland Italy, the surrounding islands, North Africa via Tunisia, and of course, Malta.

Routes and Port Locations

The port location in Malta is located in Valletta (next to what’s referred to as the Valletta Waterfront), whilst the port in Sicily is in Pozzallo. The distance between the two islands is 57 nautical miles (105 km), with the ferry ride lasting approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes .

Although there are currently no direct ferries from Valletta to Catania , you can still get there easily if you’re interested in spending most of your time there. Prior to finalising your booking with Direct Ferries, all you need to do is add the bus transfer option from Pozzallo to Catania .

Ferry Timetable

The Malta Sicily ferry service operates daily. Generally speaking, ferries depart from Valletta as early as 5:00 am, while the last ferry from Pozzallo departs at 21:30.

With this in mind, be aware of possible cancellations in the event of rough weather during the winter months.

Next, it’s time to purchase tickets. The process is quite straightforward and can be completed in a few simple steps.

  • Choose your preferred ferry route: Valletta to Pozzallo or Valletta to Catania (arrive at Pozzallo and include a bus transfer to Catania)

Can I travel by car from Malta to Sicily?

If you really want to experience the beauty of Sicily at your own pace without the stress of any time limits, your best option is to go by car.

As opposed to the pre-planned stops of a guided tour, this option will allow you to see more of the island’s top sights and perhaps go off the beaten track to discover some hidden gems.

Travelling with a personal car

Upon boarding the ferry from the Malta port, the staff will carry out your check-in whilst you’re still behind the wheel.

Once you arrive in Sicily, you will be asked to head to the garage before you need to head to the garage before the other passengers disembark.

Renting a car from Malta

If you do not have a car, renting one from Malta is possible; however, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.

Of course, the ferry price increases if you’re travelling with a personal car and a rental car. Moreover, you need to pay an additional fee to the car rental company. This varies according to the model you choose and the duration of your journey between Malta and Sicily.

Find your dream boat

One of the finest and unique experiences off the southern coast of Italy includes a trip to both Malta and Sicily, two incredibly unique locations with their own style, flare and culture. If you are starting your cultural tours of the Mediterranean Islands and countries in Malta, then a Malta to Sicily boat charter is the perfect way to make a quick trip to Sicily and experience the best of both worlds.

A Malta to Sicily boat charter on a high speed catamaran takes just 90 minutes, making the pair a perfect day trip combo for many tourists. The port at Valletta in Malta is approximately 51 miles across the Mediterranean Sea from the Sicilian port of Pozzallo. Those going between Malta and Sicily should be aware that there may be imposed a sea tax and a government levy to visit ports such as Pozzallo and Catania, which is just under double the distance from Valletta and is near the northern side of Sicily. Taking a Malta to Sicily boat charter will shock some tourists as they will be heading from the smallest island in the Mediterranean Sea to the largest with more than twice as many tourists roaming the historic sites and beaches during the peak season to take in the many influences of history, time and the rule of multiple cultures.

Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean Sea and was coveted by many different cultures throughout history. The influence of the Greeks can be seen at Agrigento, and the influence of the French Baroque period can be viewed in the religious architecture at Modica. Influence can also be seen around the Sicilian islands showing evidence of rule by the Arabs, Vandals, Romans, Byzantines, Ostrogoths, Aragon, Spain and the Normans. This unrest led to the birth of the Mafia in Sicily, an underground crime group still known throughout the world today. Visitors also flock to Sicily to see multiple world heritage sites such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples, the Aeolian Islands and the Piazza Armerina and to witness the unruly nature of one of the worldís most active volcanoes, Mt. Etna.

Beaches and wineries also abound at locations such as Palermo and Catania, and tourists have also been known to spend many days at the Giardini Naxos seaside resort, which caters to the tastes and styles of visitors from around the world. If you are planning to visit Malta and want to add another dimension to your trip, the short, cost-effective hop over to Sicily on a Malta to Sicily boat charter will be the best decision you ever made regarding your holiday on the Mediterranean Sea.

Small Ship Mediterranean Cruises: Where to Sail

Where to go in this widespread, popular destination? The following is an overview of Mediterranean small ship cruise regions, with notes on the best places for small ship. Our guidance on where to sail in the Mediterranean is separated into four broad categories based on the most common small ship Mediterranean cruise routes:

A map with beige and blue colors showing the popular small Mediterranean cruise region and waters around Greece, Italy and Croatia.

Cruises to Croatia, Dalmatian Coast, Albania, Montenegro

The southernmost shoreline of Croatia, running from the island of Rab south to the Bay of Kotor, is a popular stretch of coastline for Adriatic Sea cruises. Almost all Croatia small ship cruises visit this Dalmatia region, one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean.

Historic hillside towns made of brick and terracotta drop down to the sea in dramatic fashion. Fortified castles standing guard at the water’s edge (some of which can be seen in the TV series “Game of Thrones.”) This trendy region offers ancient Roman marble palaces, quiet beaches on small off-shore islands, cultural dances by engaging locals, world-renowned wine tasting and delectable dishes. Other Adriatic Sea cruise routes aboard small ships include the ports of Venice, Naples or even Athens.

Small Ship Greek Island Cruises

Greece is one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising destinations. With over 200 islands they are ideal for small ship cruising. Many small ship Greek Island cruises hit the popular ports of Mykonos and Santorini as well as the Corinth Canal. But we recommend routes that explore lesser known gems too. We recommend Peloponnese Peninsula and Cyclades cruises, which operate round-trip from Athens, Greece. Select routes take you far north as Corfu and the other Ionian Islands. Some itineraries even connect south to Egypt!

Small Ship Cruises to Greece and Turkey, Croatia or Egypt

If you’re looking to go farther afield, some Greece small ship cruises continue on to visit other nearby countries. The Aegean Sea takes center stage for small ship cruises to Turkey and Greece. The Aegean Islands are a collection of stunning landscapes, historical monuments and mythical legends. They are mostly under Greek sovereignty, though some eastern islands and smaller islets are under Turkish rule.

Turkey’s Bodrum with its Mausoleum at Halicarnassus one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the vibrant Kusadasi market are highlights for cruises that include Turkey.

Small ship Mediterranean cruises that sail up the western coast of Greece and into the Adriatic Sea often include stops in Albania and Montenegro before finishing in Croatia. On a Dubrovnik to Athens cruise, for example, you can see the highlights of both of these iconic countries while not setting foot in an airport. These extended Croatia small ship cruise options are all excellent choices if you have time for a longer sailing.

Italy, Corsica & Sardinia

Italy has long been one of the best places to visit in the Mediterranean, but the small ship experience provides unique insights and exclusive access to sites not often visited. Unspoiled clifftop towns, sites of antiquity and incredible food and wine are highlights of Italy cruises. Mediterranean small ship cruises that include stops in Italy are fast-becoming favorites for travelers who want to skip crowded overland travel.

Look for popular routes from Venice or Naples that include Dubrovnik, Croatia, and small islets in the Adriatic Sea. Opt for small ship cruises around Sicily, or continue west with Mediterranean small ship cruise itineraries that visit Corsica, Sardinia and other must-see ports.

“Discover harbors only accessible by small ship.”

Temperature & Rainfall

Subtropic Summer Cruising

The Mediterranean consists of a subtropic climate providing relatively mild winters and very warm summers, making it a perfect destination for small ship cruises . The temperature is moderated by nearby large bodies of water making for comfortable conditions throughout most of the year. The best time of year for small ship Mediterranean cruises is April through November.

AdventureSmith is a very professional organization that is a pleasure to work with. This was our third, but certainly not last trip with AS. The trip included 5 days in Athens, Greece and a week aboard the Sea Cloud through Lindblad. We found Lindblad a little rigid to work with during the planning stages.  In Greece, they were outstanding. The Sea Cloud is a gorgeous sailing barque. The crew, both Lindblad and Sea Cloud, were warm, gracious and a delight to sail with. My wife had always wanted to visit Greece. I love sailing. The combination got us.

I think Santorini was a top destination. It's a beautiful island that I would stay on. The smaller islands were interesting as well.

Room was, as expected, tight quarters. It's an old ship, after all. The public areas are great. The upper deck is a beautiful place for cocktails, or just relaxing. Seeing the Sea Cloud under sail is a real treat.

Meals Review

Food was excellent. I think I probably gained weight, but that's my fault. I preferred the buffet dinners to the served ones. Variety was excellent. Lot's of great salads. Good seafood and fresh fish.

All of the people leading the expedition are true professionals. They know their stuff. One of the regular speakers has her PHD in archeology and is a real expert on the region and Greek history.  I was really impressed with all of them. The two regular guides are Greek and have many years experience in the areas we visited. One of our Lindblad guides, a native Greek, was much too insistent on trying to tell us all about the Greek Orthodox religion. As a non-Christian, I found it a little off-putting. She knew her stuff, but seemed anxious to proselytize...

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Between AdventureSmith and Lindblad, we were well prepared. We made our own flight arrangements, but AS was very helpful. I cannot say enough good about our experience both with AdventureSmith and with Lindblad.

  • Sailing the Greek Isles Aboard Sea Cloud

First, the "dinners" would not stop me from recommending the cruise. For a French cruise line I had very high expectations, maybe too high. Other passengers had similar comments. Overall good, 5 star vessel, 3 star dinners. Other meals very good.

Overall good. Some details on shore excursion's were lacking. More free time at each would be have been nice.

Itinerary Review

All [places were] enjoyable in there different ways. The hiking excursion although very interesting was poorly planned, more difficult (for the old passengers) and much longer than we were told.

Very thorough with all the details.

  • The Best of Croatia Cruise
  • Le Jacques Cartier

The vessel was well appointed and had everything we needed for our week long stay. The staff was great as well and worked so hard to make sure everyone was happy and attended to.

I especially liked the local cuisine that they provided, with the wonderful Greek Salads and other selections. The only improvement on breakfast would be to provide brewed coffee as what was provided was instant coffee in tea-like bags That would probably be the only improvement.

Dittmar, the manager on board/tour director who did everything to provide us with information, changing tours to meet the changing weather conditions and providing information in a very professional, upbeat and pleasant way. He really kept everything going smoothly on board. He was very organized, provided excellent information on each island and really was great in every way. We also met one of the owners of the Variety ships, Christian, who introduced himself upon our arrival to the boat. That was a surprise!

I really liked ALL the locations we visited but enjoyed most Monemvassia and Santorini. We had a fantastic trip. Although we experienced some cooler/windier weather than is normal for this time of year, everything worked out really well. The ship staff was awesome and was professional, personable and thorough. Due to rough waters they had to turn the itinerary around and make all new tour reservations and many other last minute arrangements, adding a few different locations than expected. They did all this very well.

Transportation Review

All transportation arrangements went very smoothly and we were either provided the transportation or given the information (hotel in Athens) we needed to make our own. The hotel suggested was beautiful and first rate, with amazing views of the Acropolis from the rooftop restaurant.

Fellow Passengers Review

We can't say enough good things about all the passengers on board (that we met). There was a group of 30 Road Scholar passengers that we did not interact with too much, but all the other passengers were so pleasant, likeable and very well traveled. We got to know many very well and joined them for meals and tours and restaurants off the boat as well.

Andrew Browning, whom we have used several times to book trips, did his usual great job answering questions and provided timely information and everything we needed ahead of the trip. We have been on a number of trips with family over the years with AdventureSmith and we look forward to many more. Each trip is so memorable and provides great bonding time. I always recommend people to go to your website when looking for a trip.

Traveler Advice

Go to Greece, as we did, during the shoulder months like May and September when the hoards of people are not there. We never had to fight the crowds as you do in the summer months. With climate change, be prepared for unexpected weather and be flexible with tours being changed due to inclimate weather. If  travelers are looking for culture, history and beautiful scenery, this is a great place to go!

Athens hotel was a great location, nice rooms and pool. Older but great for our needs. Ship room was good sized and nice, common decks and dining areas were good. Dated but ideal for our needs.

Breakfast on the ship offered a lot of choices but was pretty much the same each morning.

Athens Delphi tour was great - bus ride took about 2+ hours each way. Syros, Flegandros and Paros were my favorite islands with each having good sites to visit and not too big with good food/shops. Mykonos and Santorini islands where good but very busy and my least favorite.

Airport transportation was on time, nice vehicles and driver.

Perfect group with similar age adult/children. Everyone was active.

The tour guides at Delphi and Parthenon were very good and knowledgeable. Athens guide were great.

Great planning.

  • Jewels of the Cyclades

The Galileo was very clean and functional. The staff was wonderful! The children love them. The chef was able to accomodate dietary restrictions easily. The food was wonderful! We liked the swim stops. We enjoyed the tours of the islands. Least enjoyed: It rained and the long trip back to Athens on the rough sea was LONG. We were grateful that the weather was beautiful for the rest of the trip.

Do the Sicily to Malta ferry run in October, is so, When is the timetable available for booking tickets ? and is the sea crossing rough at that time of the year

' data-src=

We did the research for you: Yes, they are also running in October ( multiple sailings per day), they seem to run all year through (also November). In october the sea is more rough, and yes on this route especially things can get really rough. 90 minutes is quite ok though.. So even in bad weather 90 minutes is done before you know it. We also checked, I think the sailing schedule for Q4 for the ferries still have to be made. When we check Virtu Ferries we can't use the booking engine from October onwards yet. Should be available shortly.

Day Excursion Malta to Sicily (Taormina and Mount Etna)

Excellent trip across from The Grand Harbour (Malta) to Pozzallo, Taormina and Mount Etna. The trip acrross took about 90 minutes in an excellent "Virtu" Cat tp Pozzallo, then by Bus to Taormina for Lunch and ended up at Mount Etna. Excellent photo opportunities all along the way, culminating at the Mount Etna Visitor Centre, recommended to everyone that would like to see this Spectacle and take once in a lifetime Photos.

Kept an open mind after reading the reviews and booking, the pick up from hotel in Malta though early (05:15) was well organised and we got to boat and straight on. The boat was efficient with plenty of seats though disembarking seemed over controlled and slightly eliteist with club class walking passengers to leave first then basically staff walked one step back and a free for all. Warning coffee on boat expensive and small! Back on to bigger coaches (ours did have a toilet) and a 2 hour journey towards Etna. A stop has been organised for a toilet break though cafe was a tourist trap so recommend walking across the square where coach stops to another cafe for a coffee and toilet otherwise you would be rushed. A couple were given the option to stay in the village whilst we continued to Etna which wasn't widely advertised. Etna was impressive though unless you do want to pay extra to go further up was abit of a take picture and go. Cafes ok though prices high as you would expect. Usual tourist shops. Due to traffic accident delaying our journey over we were given 1:45 at Etna and a number if our party were late back to the coach delaying us further by 30mins which isn't the guides fault but normally you are given a time to get back or you miss it. Not sure whether the reduced time and the mountain excursions (cable car and jeep) caused the issue but made for a stressful time. Trip back was long (over 2 hours) with only countryside. Last stop Modici was nice and guide made up time so we had 90 mins there. Then quickly back into coach then port and boat all very efficient. Boat back takes longer so didn't get into Malta until 10 and then onto bus and back .. door to door 05:15 to 10:30 .. long day! In summary for the expense not sure I would recommend unless you are desperate to see another island, it's a long day to actually stand amongst very little, the guides in English or Russian try their best with narration during the journey but you feel that if there are delays the day can change quite considerably. Spend the day chilling instead and save over 100 euros.

Virtu Ferries between Malta and Sicily is good option for people that are traveling with car. It is better to book your trip so you would not need to wait to see if you are going or not (cars). In the season there are many people traveling so it can last you even 3 days to finally get on with your car.

Have been using their services for a number of years but recently their service improved significantly. Comfortable and clean environment. Pity that they do not offer WIFI on board.

Yesterday, 16 April I booked a trip to Sicily from malta! Excelent idea, becose all the staff from Virtu made my day! Ferry verry good, clean, well organized After the cruise a big, clean, aircond bus waited for us! Excelent driver, and two great guides: Larisa for English and Nadia for Rusian language Very profesional guides, polite, friendly, helpfull all day long! I enjoyed the visits, stops in dif places ( highlight for me was Etna mountain) but Modica UNESCO town was also great All the information all so interesting all day long! The guides are excelent! Thank you Virtu Ferry

1 day tour of Mount Etna and Modica from Malta. Very good service picked up at the hotel early took ferry about 90 minutes to Sicily very smooth nice catamaran large holds 800 people and cars and trucks. Mt Etna very interesting bit of a tourist trap once you get there. Modica is worth seeing not out of place on the Godfather set. Very long day from pick up to drop off 17 hour day and about 200 miles on the bus but for the money about 140 euros each a good day out.

1 WEEK SAILING SICILY MALTA ITINERARY:

luxury-yacht-charter-sicily-malta-boat-trips

Day 1st and Day 2nd – The Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands has a volcanic process occurring in Vulcano and Stromboli. In the other isles, the volcanic process is reduced to mud baths, hot springs and gas emissions. These Isles, quite significant from the perspective of resort and tourism, have been a crossroads of human history in the Mediterranean sea. Filicudi and Alicudi kept wild areas and their hard wich get a complete signs of eolian architecture. Itineraries in the natural landscapes and in the archaeological sites are possibile by muletrack. The shores offer astonishing views, creeks and caverns of early source. Panarea is the tiniest of the archipelago. Lush vegetation reveals his source volcanic with fumaroles and welcomes visitors. The white- hibiscus plants, domed houses and bougainvillea, the tranquil coves and sharp stone protruding from the sea qualify the landscape of the isle. Stromboli is formed by a volcanic cone and some houses on either sides. It gives to the visitors incredible emotions as magma directed between two ridges, the Sciara del Fuoco, observable from the sea at nighttime and is in long-term action. Vulcano is defined by black sand beaches and volcanic events present in most of the isle: sulfur fumaroles emitted from the big pool of sulphurous mud, thermal waters and Great Crater. Granted it is unashamedly pricey and touristy, but the town deserves a few days for people watching, its beautiful historical theater and breathtaking views. Among its supporters was.

Day 3rd – Taormina, Acireale and Catania

Taormina gets incredibly active in August and July and basically shuts down between Easter and November. Head up in May, April, September or October. The medieval cliffside town of Taormina is overrun with tourists, yet its natural beauty remains hard to dispute. The view of the sea and Mt. Etna from its jagged cactus-covered cliffs is as close to perfection as a panorama can get—notably on clear days, when the snowcapped volcano’s white puffs of smoke rise against the blue sky. Writers have extolled Taormina’s attractiveness virtually since it was founded in the 6th century BC by Greeks from nearby Naxos; Goethe and D. H. Lawrence were among its well-known enthusiasts. The town’s boutique-lined main streets get old rather fast, but the many hiking routes that wind through the beautiful hills encircling a choice that is timeless is promised by Taormina. A trip up to gorgeous Castelmola (whether on foot or by car) should also be on your own itinerary.

Between Taormina and Catania, there is the enchanting Acireale: The river Acis gave its name to a string of towns that were after founded on its banks: Aci Trezza, Aci Castello, Aci Catena, Aci San Antonio, Aci Bonaccorsi and Acireale. Legends and myths aside, Acireale now is a bustling commercial satellite town just 5km north of Catania and a brief drive from Taormina. Of Mount Etna it offers beautiful views not only of the Ionian Sea but also from its eminent position above the sea behind. The centre of the old town is Piazza Duomo, home to some excellent baroque buildings including the Basilica dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, the Cathedral, the town hall and Palazzo Mod?. But it is not architecture that most people come to Acireale for… the main attraction is the Carnevale!

Catania is Sicily’s second biggest city, with a population of around 300,000. It lies under the shadow of Mount Etna, on the Ionian Sea, or “A Muntagna” as the locals refer to it. Mount Etna is ever present and has to a large extent shaped both the history and the genuine existence of Catania. On several occasions volcanic eruptions destroyed the city, the most devastating of which occurred in the 17th Century. In 1669 Catania was covered in lava and then, just 24 years after in 1693 the town shook down to its foundations. The giant Polyphemus fell into depression, when Acis, Galatea, a Nereid sea goddess, and a simple shepherd lad, fell in love. Depression turned then and into jealousy into rage until Odysseus’ famous one-eyed it could stand no more. He hurled an enormous hunk of Mount Etna at the unforuntate Acis, killing him instantaneously. Grief stricken Galatea, unable to live without her lover, transformed Acis’ human remains into a river that ran from the foothills of the volcano into the sea beneath, where they were united in watery communion.

Day 4th and Day 5th – Syracuse, Noto, Marzamemi and Ragusa

More than any other city, Syracuse encapsulates the eternal beauty of Sicily. It’s not easy to imagine now but in its heyday this was the biggest city in the historical world, bigger even than Athens and Corinth. Its ‘Once upon a Time’ commences in 734 BC, when Corinthian colonists founded the settlement and landed on the island of Ortygia, setting up the mainland city four years later. Nearly three millennia after, the ruins of that -new city make up one of the largest archaeological sites of Sicily, the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis. Across the water from the mainland, Ortygia remains the city’s most beautiful corner, a casually elegant, eclectic marvel with an ever-growing legion of devotees.

Marzamemi is worth seeing at any time of year, but it really comes into its own in the high summer months. In July it often hosts an International Film Festival during which films are projected directly on the walls of the buildings surrounding the piazza. This incredibly balmy nocturnal al fresco atmosphere continues all through August as locals and visitors mingle in the open air bars, sipping on sundowners and cooling down after a day’s sunbathing and swimming at the nearby sandy shore of Porto Palo di Capo Passero. Then it’s off to one of many outstanding seafront fish restaurants, for example La Cialoma.

Some of the most fascinating towns in Sicily, Ragusa has induced many a visitor’s jaw to drop as they set eyes on the lower part of the town. Essentially Baroque, the Ragusa you’ll see now dates almost completely from 1693. Public opinion on where to rebuild the town was divided, and so a compromise was made. The more wealthy , more aristocratic citizens assembled a new town in a different site Ragusa “Superiore”, while the other half of the population decided to rebuild on the first site, on a ridge at the bottom of a gorge Ragusa Ibla. Both towns remained divided until 1926 when they were merged to become the chief town of the province, taking the position of Modica. It’s the smaller Ragusa Ibla down below that truly draws visitors, while the top part has its fair share of architectural joy. The Baroque logic of its plan becomes more obvious, once you enter the town’s heart although outwardly Mediaeval from a space.

The town is part of the Val di Noto UNESCO Heritage site and UNESCO patronage protects 18 of its buildings. It would be excessive to record them all here, but a few stone to look at are listed below. Admire guy’s resilience in the face of natural disaster, and the best thing to do is only to walk.

– the Basilica di San Giorgio, built in 1738 by Rosario Gagliardo. It lies at the very top of some 200 steps and has an impressive neoclassical dome that was added in 1820. – “Giardino lbleo”. The Hyblean Gardens offer some excellent views of the town. It wasn’t entirely ruined by the 1693 earthquake as can be seen from the Gothic Catalan-style arches in the right aisle. The church is reached via 242 steps, though the benefit at the top is worth it as its name might indicate. If you are a fan of the success Italian detective show Inspector Montalbano, you may recognise the perspective from the panoramic shots of Ragusa Ibla that set the scene for a whole lot of the episodes from the Church of Maria delle Scale. Many of the scenes from the series were filmed in and around the beautiful Piazza Duomo of Ragusa Ibla: see our ‘On the trail of Inspector Montalbano’ page for more details.

As the first variant was deemed unsuitable, the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, previously situated under the walls of the Mediaeval fortress, was rebuilt twice. The variation you will see now was constructed in 1718 in an archetypal, excessive Sicilian Baroque design.

Day 6th and Day 7th – Malta

Malta is a fascinating island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean for many centuries. Ideal for a comfortable sailing vacation, you see the islands of Gozo, Comino and Cominotto, renowned for their pristine beaches and caves and can sail round Malta . Unspoilt Gozo has a scenic harbour, Mgarr, and lots of quiet anchorages where you can swim in turquoise waters- worth a visit. Comino is excellent for swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon which provides excellent shelter for anchoring at nighttime.

If you desire a mixture of city nightlife, historic buildings and abandoned anchorages with quite short passages, the Malta is a good choicefor sailing vacation. With the isles so close to Malta, you may want to combine a yacht charter with time to visit the historic sights of Malta, including the historical town of Mdina. In two weeks you could extend your sailing holiday to visit some 60nm north of Gozo, Sicily.

Perfect for a relaxed sailing holiday, you can sail round Malta and see the picture-perfect and St Julian’s Harbour, St Paul’s island fishing harbour of Marsaxlokk on the south of the island. Gozo is the second biggest island full of character and appeal. Quiet compared to Malta, Gozo definitely is worth a visit ashore. Comino is superb for swimming in the famous Blue Lagoon which provides excellent shelter for anchoring at nighttime. From here you can sail round the Maltese Islands returning for an evening dip in the pristine waters of the lagoon. An itinerary around the Maltese islands is easy sailing most nights you will on anchor in protected bays. A trip to Sicily contains a 60nm open passageway so best for experienced skippers just. Fans of history will need to investigate Valetta and Birgu, with its maritime museum, Inquisitor’s Palace, walled town and narrow roads.

CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF MALTA (65 NM):

sicily-malta-itinerary-week-sailing-charter

Day 1st The indented Mediterranean shoreline of Malta, Gozo and Comino expanses for 200km offering a wide selection of harbours and anchorages (determined by the prevailing wind) so that a visit here lets you lazily cruise and explore the isles. Chartering a yacht in Malta or whether seeing the isles with your own sailing or motor boat the place provides you with an opportunity to investigate historical Europe while appreciating great diving and swimming in turquoise waters. This is great chance to do some shopping — or maybe take a horse and carriage ride to investigate the sights. Farther inland you can see the historical capital Mdina.

This historical fort is testament to Malta’s long and troubled history. The views are amazing. St John’s Cathedral, constructed by the Knights Hospitaller is worth seeing: its treasures contain tapestries, Caravaggios and historical relics. Malta’s Meglithic temples make the Knights’ building look quite modern — these monuments date back almost 6000 years — the pyramids are not mature than them and are regarded as the earliest freestanding structures on earth.

Day 2nd You wi ll pass before you reach the open sea between brooding castles and fortifications. If states permit you can drop anchor at Marsascala — this little bay is home to a scenic fishing village. This is an excellent opportunity to head ashore and find the southern area of Malta, the least. Eventually, you’ll settle in at Island Bay. There are some anchoring areas that are wonderful, and there’s an all-natural stone arch. If the wind is

Day 3rd Start in Marsaxlokk, a lovely, colourful fishing hamlet, maybe pick up some seafood for lunch… This bay is also home to the container port including oil products, so swimming might need to wait. Remains of megalithic graves are available on the hills above Marsaxlokk. If you get to the chain of caves which make up the Blue Grotto at 1pm, you’ll discover some of the caverns reflecting the vibrant colours of the sea-life, though others will glow strong azure; a great place for kayaking. In the day you can swim away among the finest beaches in the Mediterranean, Golden Bay, and anchor here or in Gnejna depending on the states.

Day 4th Paradise bay is a wonderful anchorage with clear waters over sand, and is just eclipsed by the famed Blue Lagoon. This is a really well protected anchorage with crystal clear waters. Remain for the night after the day trippers have left for the evening and love the bay.

Day 5th While the yacht waits for you in Mgarr marina spend the day. The countryside is pretty; scattered with megalithic monuments, churches and historical forts covering 6 millennia of civilisation. Victoria (also called Rabat) is the only actual town — there are some little hamlets, which are frequently left when the second homers leave at the end of summer. Gozo is a glance back in time — before uncontrolled development took over to Malta must have been, and it lost some facets of its traditional lifestyle.

Day 6th Circumnavigate Gozo starting at Mgarr. There are one or two bays where you can take a tender ride maybe take a dip and to investigate the coastline.

Day 7th North shore of Malta to Valetta. Eventually you’ll maybe head for a little more shopping and head back into the historical harbour of Valetta, back to the exciting center of Malta and to try some local delicacies.

The warmest country in Europe is expecting a record-breaking year for tourism.

Malta , in the middle of the Mediterranean , is awash with ancient architecture and a beautiful coastline. Located between Sicily and North Africa , the Maltese archipelago is also home to the islands of Gozo and Comino, which both offer their own cultural attractions and natural highlights.

Plus, Malta has an average annual temperature of 23C – which is the warmest in Europe. Should you be looking to explore the shoreline or soak up some medieval history, there are plenty of things to do that suit the entire family.

From enjoying a beach day at Golden Bay on Malta’s north-west coast to hiking across Gozo or exploring a Baroque cathedral in the capital, Valletta , there’s no shortage of things to see and do. You’ll also find a vibrant nightclub scene in centrally situated St Julian’s, and could hotfoot it across to smaller island Comino to luxuriate in the Blue Lagoon’s glorious turquoise water.

Here’s our guide to the best things to do in Malta.

  • How Gozo became one of the greenest islands in the Med

Meander through Mdina’s Vilhena Gate

The ancient walled city of Mdina sits in the southwest of Malta and is one of the island’s most famous tourist locations. Access into the fortified city is through the main Vilhena Gate, and inside you’ll see an array of medieval architecture: Palazzo Costanzo, St Paul’s Cathedral and Torre dello Standardo. Plus, if you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you may recognise the gate from the first season. Meander through the city’s gateways and explore its shops, bars, and restaurants. Nearby Rabat is also worth a visit while you’re there, with this village known for its feasts.

Swim in the Blue Lagoon, Comino

The Blue Lagoon is a beautiful bay found between the island Comino and its smaller counterpart, Cominotto. The ferry ride is less than an hour from the mainland’s Cirkewwa and Marfa harbours, or you can charter your own boat to the turquoise spot. The stunning sea offers a crystal-clear view of the white sands below and you can snorkel from the shallow beach, too. Meanwhile, watersports – such as jet ski hire – and diving sites are also available on Comino. Just be aware that the Blue Lagoon gets extremely busy during the summer months.

Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta

Malta’s capital city, Valletta, has an array of architectural masterpieces and Baroque buildings, including the Grandmasters Palace and St John’s Co-Cathedral. The latter was built in the 16th century by the Order of the Knights of Saint John, and while its exterior is fairly simple, the inside of the Roman Catholic church looks far more impressive. There are nine chapels, a series of tombs, a crypt, famous works of art – including The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist – and ornate marble details throughout. It’s worth noting that a modest dress code must be adhered to while inside the cathedral, with visitors expected to have their shoulders covered.

Enjoy the nightlife in St Julian’s

St Julian’s is one of the most built-up parts of central Malta and offers a “buzzier” vibe. The town’s Portomaso Bay is a busy marina with casinos, hotels, and shops, while Spinola Bay is where you’ll find quieter bars. Paceville is the heart and soul of the party, and where you’ll find a vibrant nightclub scene alongside a selection of restaurants. The Feast of St Julian’s is a large, outdoor celebration featuring fireworks and festivities and it usually takes place at the end of August, should you be planning a summer trip.

Have a beach day at Golden Bay

There aren’t many sandy beaches across Malta, which makes Golden Bay even more special. Situated near the village of Manikata on the island’s north-west coast, it features an azure blue sea and (as the name suggests) golden sand. Reached down a flight of steps, there are cafes, sun loungers and umbrellas to make for a long seaside day. If you don’t feel like lounging about, water sports options include paragliding and jet skiing.

Go hiking in Gozo

Gozo is Malta’s second-largest island, and it’s only 45 minutes away by ferry. Like Malta, the island has several historic buildings, such as the medieval citadel seen in Rabat, its capital. However, if you fancy veering into its rural landscape, there are multiple hiking paths to explore. You could set off from eastern city Nadur and follow a route past Ramla, where you’ll discover a sandy bay and the intriguing Calypso Cave. Other options offering an amazing coastal view include a trail along the Sanap Cliffs or a walk to Dwejra Bay.

Soak up the view in Marsaxlokk

If you’re looking for a more traditional Maltese vantage point, Marsaxlokk is a small fishing village situated in the south-east, famous for its colourful boats and harbour view. Tuck into seafood caught from the surrounding waters and wander the narrow streets, all while gazing out over the horizon. There’s also a fish market every Sunday, should you fancy mingling with the locals.
