Wonderful safari lodge, the team makes you feel at home and very friendly and welcoming. Keep it up team. The game tour guide is awesomeness, uyayitshaya into yakhe, keep it up.

I loved every moment of being there. Going up and down the rooms and the eating area felt like a good a much needed exercise. Oh the showers were nice too. When there get them to explain what Matusadonha is 😉

mana pools safari lodge zimbabwe

Rauhallinen, kaunis lodge, jossa tilavat huoneet ja omat, isot terassit. Näkymä Sambesi-joelle. Lyhyt matka ajoille. Mukava nuotiopaikka, jossa upea tunnelma nauttia vaikka sundownerit.

Fantastic venue and rooms.

Mana Pools Safari Lodge nestles close to Mana Pools National Park’s eastern boundary at the Ruckomeshi River. Set amongst riverine figs, African mango and Apple-ring albida trees, the thatched chalets enjoy commanding views of the sweeping flood plains and mighty Zambezi River.

The lodge has been tastefully built around many wild and ancient trees with a giant African Mango (Cordyla Africana) taking centre stage in the main dining and lounge area.

Visitors to Mana Pools experience the African wilderness in its ‘raw’ form, untainted by commercialisation. The park is characterised by its tranquillity, wide open spaces, close up wildlife experiences and unblemished natural terrain. It is renowned for its walking and canoe safaris and large numbers of wildlife, particularly crocodiles, hippos, buffalo and elephant. The impact of man has been minimal so it is common for visitors to have ‘close up’ sightings of wildlife in their natural state.

Mana Pools has the country’s biggest concentration of  hippopotami  and crocodiles and large dry season mammal populations of zebra, elephant and Cape buffalo. The area is also home to other threatened species including the lion,  cheetah,  Cape Hunting Dog (Painted Dog)  and other endangered species such as the leopard and the  brown hyena .

Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools National Park is a 219,600 ha wildlife conservation area and national park in northern Zimbabwe. It is a region of the lower Zambezi River where the flood plain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season. As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa’s most renowned game viewing regions.

The park was inscribed, in conjunction with the Sapi Safari Area (118,000 ha) and Chewore Safari Area (339,000 ha) as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site (for a total of 676,600 ha) in 1984. The Mana Pools were designated a RAMSAR wetland of international importance on 3 January 2013.

Mana  means ‘four’ in Shona, in reference to the four large permanent pools formed by the meanderings of the middle Zambezi. These 2,500 square kilometres of river frontage, islands, sandbanks and pools, flanked by forests of mahogany, wild figs, ebonies and baobabs, is one of the least developed national parks in Southern Africa.

Animals and Birds:

Elephant, eland, buffalo, impala, waterbuck, baboons, monkeys, zebra, warthog and hippo are some of the larger herbivores to be seen regularly by visitors. Lions, leopards, spotted hyena and cheetah are also present.

Over 380 birds have been recorded at Mana Pools. The range of habitats includes woodland, escarpment cliffs and savannah. Waterbirds are well represented along the shore of the Zambezi River and the four pools, which fill up with flood water during the rainy season.

Red-billed helmet-shrike,  Rock pratincole,  Rufous-bellied  heron, Sombre greenbul, Southern carmine bee-eater, White-backed night heron, White-headed black  chat, White-headed lapwinFish eagle, African skimmer, Black-throated wattle-eye, Southern banded snake eagle, Blue-cheeked bee-eater,  Böhm’s spinetail,  Crested Guineafowl,  Little bittern,  Livingstone’s flycatcher, Lilian’s lovebird, Mottled spinetail, Pel’s fishing-owl,  Peter’s twinspot,  Plain martin, .

Mana Pools Weather

Mana Pools has a climate that is warm and hot. September to March is the warmest time of the year, while May to August is the coldest period and these months are regarded as Winter. Due to topographical changes within Mana Pools NP wide temperature changes can occur within the park.

The Dry season is from April to October, bringing pleasant weather and a bright, clear sky. October is the hottest month in most parts of Zimbabwe and typically there are significant temperature rises until the normally predictable first rains in mid November. Downpours followed by sunny skies are typical of the Wet season (November to March), although it can sometimes lightly shower for days at a time.

Dry season –April to October

  • April – This is when the Rainy season draws to a close although occasional showers can be experienced into early May. It cools down – particularly at night, and the rains occur with less and less frequency.
  • May, June, July & August – These months are typically the coldest and driest although it starts warming up in August. Daytime temperatures are around 28°C, but at night and during the early mornings the temperature is generally around 10°-12°C. Warm clothes are necessary for early morning game drives.

The heat reaches its peak in October, with average temperatures of 35°C during the day although it is common for temperatures to frequently rise to over 40°C. The rain and high temperatures results in a significant increase in humidity.

Wet season – November to March

November – The rains are in full force, although it would be unusual for them to occur every day. It often feels uncomfortably hot due to the high temperatures (33°C on average) and increased humidity.

  • December, January & February – During the wettest months, it rarely rains all day, but it rains almost every day. Afternoon showers are followed by bright skies, but rain can also come in the form of a continuous drizzle lasting days. Daytime temperatures average 30°C, while night and early morning average 20°C.
  • March – Whilst significant rains can still be experienced in March, generally by the end of the month the rains decrease. Temperatures average between 30°C and 19°C.

Mana Pools Safari Lodge

Zimbabwe’s Most Beautiful Park

Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools National Park

The Mana Pools National Park is a natural tourist attraction located in Zimbabwe along the picturesque Zambezi River. The park is famous for its beautiful natural scenery.

This is especially true during the dry season. When the floodwaters recede they reveal vast open grasslands and pools of water. This picturesque backdrop provides an ideal setting for capturing stunning wildlife photographs.

UNESCO designated Mana Pools National Park as a World Heritage Site in 1984. It has many habitats including woodlands, riverine forests, and open grasslands where ancient baobab trees dot the landscape. This diverse flora supports a plethora of fauna, making it a haven for wildlife.

The park derives its name “Mana” from the Shona language, meaning the number four, referencing the four main pools found in the area. These pools are named Green, Chine, Long, and Chisasiko. They add to the park’s allure and provide water for its abundant wildlife.

What Is Mana Pools National Park Known For?

Mana Pools is one of Africa’s few national parks that allows walking safaris . This one-of-a-kind experience allows tourists to walk through the park with experienced guides. Walking safaris offer a more intimate wildlife experience, allowing guests to appreciate the beauty of the bush up close.

The wildlife is diverse and abundant. Elephants, buffalos, hippos, and crocodiles are plentiful. So are lions, leopards, zebras, and antelopes. Many bird species also call the park home.

Visitors may see all these species in their natural environment, making it a popular spot for wildlife enthusiasts.

What Is Mana Pools National Park Known For

Mana Pools National Park Wildlife

The park is home to a diverse range of animal species, large and small. The following are some of the significant wildlife species found in Mana Pools.

African Wild Dog

Mana Pools National Park is home to colonies of African wild dogs, often known as painted wolves. These highly sociable and endangered canines travel in packs. African wild dogs have a striking appearance. Their vibrant coat of black, brown, white, and yellow, giving them a painted or mottled look. Each individual has a unique coat pattern that makes them distinctly identifiable.

These majestic mammals can be seen roaming around the park and swimming in the river. Visitors may see herds of elephants browsing small shrubs as well as feeding on trees using their trunks to pluck leaves off tall branches. Elephants stand on their back legs to reach the best leaves. Elephants are extremely social animals with family structures led by matriarchs.

Hippos are typically semi-aquatic, spending most of their time submerged in water. Generally, they feed at night on dry land. They are very large animals with barrel-shaped bodies, short legs, and a big skull. A large mouth reveals massive tusks and powerful incisor teeth. Hippos are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa and are kept at a distance for one’s safety.

The African buffalo are strong animals with a bulky body and have a dark brown or black coat. Buffalo are famous for their huge, curving horns that they use to defend themselves and spar with rivals. These robust herbivores can be found in a variety of habitats across the park, including grasslands, and woodlands. Buffalo is one of the famous African Big 5 and are found in large herds in the national park.

Of all the cats, lions are the most gregarious. They are the only cats to live in family groups called “prides,” made up of two to three unrelated adult males and four to twelve related adult females with their cubs. Lions use ambush and stalking tactics when hunting. Every member of the pride participates in the kill; males consume first, then females, and finally cuss. Males defend the females and cubs against hyenas and other lions.

Mana Pools is home to a variety of bird species. It includes African fish eagles and saddle-billed storks. Also skimmers, jacanas, and pied kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, lilac-breasted rollers, and various herons, egrets, and raptors. Mana Pools is on the African-Eurasian flyway. It attracts many migrating species from breeding sites in the northern hemisphere to wintering areas in Africa.

Mana Pools is a very special National Park and Kanga Camp with its water pan is probably the most special permanent camp in Mana. It is run by the excellent African Bush Camps. The site is fabulous. Just sitting on the deck overlooking the Kanga pan we had visits from Elephants, Impala, Kudu, Eland, Buffalo, a Wild Dog Pack with seven puppies, Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, Hyena and of innumerable birds including the rare Crested Guinea Fowl.

– Tom M via TripAdvisor

This is an amazing camp. There is a huge waterhole right in front of the main building and all day long animals come to drink. You see more animals at the waterhole than on a game drive!

This camp is set in the wilderness of Mana Pool. There are only 12 luxurious tents all with outdoor shower, basin and toilet. Enjoy the bush while you shower!
