“let me down when i needed them”.

written by Owens113 on 15/12/2023

I used M&S travel insurance for many years. I paid every premium bang on time and never made a claim. Last year, I was unfortunate enough to need cancer treatment, and M&S have refused to insure me ever since. I expected to be charged a premium, as with any medical condition, but not to be turned down flat. Years of loyal custom count for absolutely nothing in a time of need.

“Avoid at all cost”

written by Ms1973 on 11/08/2023

Chose M&S for holiday insurance for a holiday in Mexico. Not the cheapest but we thought we could trust the M&S brand. Very efficient at taking our money but when we wanted to makea small medical claim, it turned out they had made an error and thought we needed holiday cover for the UK. As a result we couldnt claim and, more importantly had not been covered for our holiday. M&S could not have been any less helpfull and still charged us for cover that we couldn't possibly use. Wouldn't recommend using this company at all.

“Travel claim”

written by Travellar on 01/09/2022

I am surprised to read the negative reviews for Marks. I put in a claim for extra costs after our original flights were cancelled by KLM. An agent contacted me after 4 weeks and explained what extra documents I would need etc. After submitting them I have just received my compensation today. The matter was resolved within 8 weeks which I think its a pretty good turnaround. thank you Marks and Spenser Insurance.

“Hopeless Insurance Company”

written by PF321 on 12/08/2022

Marks & Spencer Insurance are hopeless, impossible to get through to anyone on the phone. Unless you want to make a payment to them, then they answer straight away. Worst insurance company I have ever dealt with, never again. Very expensive, no customer service. WARNING, USE Marks and Spencer INSURANCE AT YOUR PERIL!!!

“Incompetent staff”

written by DulcePorter on 18/05/2022

Had single trip travel insurance for Sri Lanka, holiday was cancelled by agent due to FCDO advice changing to essential travel only. Enquired about switching my insurance to another destination but was told I couldn’t do that although it was fine to change the dates of travel - this would have meant rebooking the holiday at a time when FCDO advice was in place which it clearly states on the policy booklet that “ we won’t cover any claim if the advice or measures were in place or had been announced at the time you booked your trip”. Another member of the household was told they were entitled to a refund on the policy which when she rang back the next day to claim she was told she wasn’t, after telling them to listen back to the “recorded call” she got a refund yet they refused to refund my policy even though we are in the same household just because it wasn’t me that had rung. Nobody seems to know the answer to the simplest of questions - do they not train the staff - clearly not!!!!!!!!

“M&S 25% online travel insurance Discount Voucher RIP...”

written by on 22/03/2015

M&S are offering a 25% discount voucher (when purchasing an Annual Travel Insurance policy from them) the voucher is received when you purchase your foreign money from M&S in store, beware it is not actually worth 25% but only a tiny 10% ! This is because you already get 15% on line discount anyway when you get an online quote so the voucher is only worth an additional 10% I only found this out because my discount code wasn't accepted initially being 5 numbers long when the box only accepts the last 4 numbers so I ended up getting the 2 quotes NB the input details were exactly the same - what a waste of time. You must also start the policy within 30 days which is a waste of money if you don't actually need it to start in April 2015 but in the summer! Not such a good deal then :-(

“Money grabbing faceless greedy company. ”

written by ujLyon29 on 11/05/2014

They did not cover missed departure when we were held up in a queue at the airport which was not our fault, but the airlines. We missed the plane. Hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Money grabbing faceless company. What greed!

“quote takes too long over the phone”

written by on 07/12/2013

The web site was not working when I tried to get a quote for travel insurance to australia. The girl on the help line took absolutely ages going through all of my details. The length of time spent on the phone certainly deterred me from taking the insurance. She was most unhelpful and was like speaking to a robot! I would expect a more personable and efficient service from m&s. Sorry I can't comment on the insurance cover as I gave up the Will to listen any further and called the Post Office- got a great service there.

“last year I booked my travel insurance with marks and...”

written by CAS502NF on 27/05/2013

last year I booked my travel insurance with marks and Spencer for my daughter and myself and requested it in paper form. However, mine arrived, my daughter's didn't. I rang on my way to the airport and discovered my daughter's had not gone through. They were very apologetic and I did her policy on my mobile phone on the way to the airport!! This year I again requested it in paper form and was assured it would be in the post, however it did not arrive and I rang and complained and was told it would be sent, again no record of my previous request and it again never arrived!!! I will not be doing my travel insurance with them again, if they cannot deal with a simple request of putting the policy in the post, how will they deal with a possible travel claim!

“Excellent sevice - Zero hassle”

written by MaryL on 28/10/2012

A large claim for a cancelled holiday required only one phone call and one e-mail of supporting documents for M&S to process the claim. They then took only 6 days to e-mail that they accepted the claim and make the payment directly into the bank. Really excellent, zero hassle service.

“RUINED A HOLIDAY FOR 16 PEOPLE”

written by JoyceAvril on 29/05/2012

My golfing partner injured her leg in Turkey, excellent attention from hotel and hospital but we were told they do not deal with Axa due to previous problems with settlement. After numberous phone calls with promises of a call back and other untruths it was not until we rang Marks and Spencers to raise the credit limit on the ladies card to pay and have her discharged from hospital that they took over - the discharge papers arrived within 1 hour, after waiting from 8.30 and by this time was almost 4pm. This is the second time this lady has called upon them in distress and found that it only got worse not better when they were involved.

“Good Service and Low Hassle”

written by on 13/09/2011

I have used M&S Travel Insurance after it was recommended to me by a friend (she was stuck in a foreign country during the Iceland volcano last year and they completely looked after her and paid out on necessary travel and accommodation costs). I lost my camera in transit and lodged a claim with M&S. As soon as I had the relevant paper work they paid out - I have only been back from holiday for 2 weeks and I already have a new camera. All of the people were very helpful, and as long as you have all of the right paperwork they are very easy to deal with. Double check what your policy covers before you buy, and what you need to claim, and you will be fine!

“cancellation of travel insurance”

written by mogas on 21/06/2011

I paid for a single trip insurance for italy, however i did not travel on the at all due to I'm not feeling and also work commitment. Therefore I called them for refund. They told me that I can't cancell and get it refund due to it was after my travel period - 10/06/2011 - 16/06/2011. My concern was, it was mention in the policy handbook that we have right to cancell 14 days from the day I got the policy. The customer service were not aware of what's stated in the policy book and so adamant about it and refuse to provide refund for the cancellation. There are so misleading in what stated in the policy booklet to what are they practising. Total rip off.

Son was injured in a jet ski accident, told that we were not covered since we had not declared as a dangerous sport. This activity is covered as standard in many othe policies. Check the fine print. This policy is underwritten by the much slated AXA. Avoid at all cost.

Should always check the policy if you plan to do sport like that, only common sense!

“The insurance is a benefit of M&S Premium Club...”

written by dandms on 20/05/2010

The insurance is a benefit of M&S Premium Club membership. My wife's handbag was stolen in Barcelona (where else!) when muck was thrown at me to distract! My claim was dealt with quickly and fairly and settled in full in conjunction with my home insurance policy (Nationwide). The policy covers for a maximum of 45 days and is good for multi-trips and is not dependent on using M&S credit card. However, cover cannot be extended further.

“I was caught up in the Eurostars being cancelled just...”

written by on 04/05/2010

I was caught up in the Eurostars being cancelled just before Christmas. M&S claimed I hadn't selected solo traveller cover (I read this policy carefully) so was only covered for transport arrangments, not accommadation. As Eurostar coughed up on transport I had nothing to claim - but had to pay the hotel in full myself due to late cancelation. M&S is ONLY suitable for package deals - as what is the point of covering transport only when the transport company will refund you and pay out of pocket expenses if neccessary! If, like most people nowadays you book hotels seperately and travel cheaply - don't use M&S!

NNot only unhelpful but rude to boot. In this travel crisis it is nice to know that Marks and Spencers will not pay a penny. I think travellers should really think about using this insurance.

written by Rolly99 on 25/03/2010

We wanted to check if a couple of existing medical conditions would be covered. We got a real 'runaround' M&S fistly would not answer the question saying that we had to go directly to AXA (the underwriter) and ask them. At AXA after speaking to several people they just referred us back to M&S who promptly just completely refused cover without offering additional premium etc. "If the condition is not on their list it's not covered" - not what is said in the brochure.

“I took out a single-trip insurance policy with Marks...”

written by rancid rob on 18/06/2009

I took out a single-trip insurance policy with Marks and Spencer Travel Insurance in March, really because of the (mostly) good comments here. Because of a death in the family, I had to cancel the holiday, and I sent in my claim and the necessary paperwork last Friday, June 12th. I have just received a phone-call saying my claim has been accepted, and the cheque should arrive in 7 to 10 days. The people I spoke to were extremely polite and very helpful - no arguments, excuses, trying to get out of paying out. The whole process of making the claim was completely hassle-free. When I re-book my holiday, I will certainly re-insure with M&S .

Liked - ease of buying Marks and Spencer Travel Insurance online. Disliked the service (or lack of it) trying to claim from Turkey when dealing with a heart attack.

Navigating Your Way to the Best Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide

  • Travel insurance is not just an afterthought; it’s your all-encompassing safety net on the road.
  • The best travel insurance isn’t always the priciest—it depends on your unique travel needs.
  • Statistics reveal a rising trend in travel insurance purchases.
  • Choosing travel insurance involves scrutinizing the policy fine print.
  • When chosen wisely, travel insurance can save you from significant financial distress.

Demystifying Travel Insurance

According to a report by Squaremouth, as of 2020, 27% of travelers bought travel insurance for their trips-a significant increase from the previous years. The surge in numbers indicates growing awareness among travelers about the importance of a safety net while on the go. But what exactly is travel insurance, and why do you need it?

Travel insurance is a type of policy that covers unforeseen travel-related issues such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, baggage loss, and more. As Megan Moncrief , Chief Marketing Officer at Squaremouth, aptly puts it, “Travel insurance is really an all-encompassing safety net. It’s the one thing that can cover you for everything from a cancellation to a medical emergency.”

Busting the Myth: Is More Expensive Always Better?

Contrary to popular belief, the best travel insurance isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. The trick lies in aligning the insurance with your specific travel needs. Consider your destination, duration of your trip, planned activities, and your health conditions. These elements can drastically affect what kind of coverage you’ll need. For instance, if you’re planning a ski vacation, you might want a plan that includes emergency evacuation from a mountain-something your standard policy may not cover.

The Secret Sauce: Deciphering Travel Insurance

Understanding travel insurance policies can be akin to reading ancient hieroglyphics. Yet, knowing what to look for can significantly simplify this process. Pay particular attention to these details:

  • Coverage : Make sure it includes medical emergencies, trip cancellations, delays, and lost or stolen possessions.
  • Limits : Check if the coverage limits are enough to cover potential costs.
  • Exclusions : Look out for policy exclusions, such as pre-existing conditions or adventure sports.
  • Deductibles : Find out if you’re required to pay out-of-pocket before the coverage kicks in.

When the Unexpected Strikes: Claiming Your Insurance

In the unfortunate event of needing to claim your travel insurance, knowing what to do can expedite the process. Always keep a copy of your policy with you . Inform your insurer as soon as possible, provide all necessary documentation, and stay patient-sometimes, it can take a while to process your claim.

The Power of Reviews: Learning from Other Travelers

Just as you’d check hotel reviews before booking , read up on other travelers’ experiences with their insurance providers. Look for companies that have a good reputation for handling claims quickly and fairly.

Hidden Gems: Lesser-known Benefits of Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can offer hidden benefits that might surprise you. Did you know it could cover the cost of a hotel stay if your flight gets seriously delayed? Or provide reimbursement if your tour operator goes bankrupt? Remember, the devil (and the angel) is in the detail. Make sure to explore the policy benefits thoroughly.

Beyond the standard offerings, travel insurance can come with an array of hidden benefits that could be lifesavers on your trip. Here are a few lesser-known gems tucked away in the fine print of travel insurance policies:

1. Coverage for extreme sports: If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you might be surprised to learn that some travel insurance policies cover injuries sustained from extreme sports like skydiving, bungee jumping, or even scuba diving. It’s an add-on benefit in some plans, ensuring you’re protected when seeking that adrenaline rush.

2. Pet care: Believe it or not, some insurance policies offer coverage for your furry friends! If your return home is delayed due to a covered reason, your policy might cover additional boarding fees for your pet.

3. Identity theft protection: In this digital age, identity theft is a growing concern. Some travel insurance providers understand this and offer services to help if your identity is stolen during your trip. They may assist with contacting banks, getting a new passport, and more.

4. Coverage for political unrest: The world can be unpredictable. If political unrest or a coup suddenly makes your chosen destination unsafe, some policies will cover the costs of your trip cancellation or early return home.

5. Concierge services: In the midst of navigating a foreign country, a concierge service can be a godsend. Some insurance policies provide 24/7 concierge services, helping you book restaurants, arrange transportation, or even source hard-to-get event tickets.

6. Return of mortal remains: While it’s a benefit no one wants to think about, some comprehensive travel insurance plans include a clause to cover the cost of returning your remains home or funeral expenses abroad if you were to tragically pass away during your trip.

Remember, while these hidden benefits can be quite enticing, they’re not included in every policy. Always read your policy’s fine print carefully to ensure it fits your unique travel needs.

The Round-Up: Comparing Top Travel Insurance Providers

In the vast ocean of travel insurance options, pinpointing the one that best fits your unique needs can be overwhelming. Here’s a brief comparison of some top-rated travel insurance providers to help simplify your choice:

1. SafetyWing Travel Insurance

SafetyWing offers affordable, worldwide travel insurance, making it a popular choice among budget-conscious travelers and digital nomads. The policies include coverage for unexpected illness and injury, travel delay, and lost checked luggage. However, it’s important to note that their policies do not cover trip cancellations.

2. World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads is widely recognized in the travel community for its comprehensive coverage and flexibility. They cater to adventurous travelers, offering coverage for over 200 adventure activities. Plus, you can buy and extend your policy online, even after you’ve started your trip.

3. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz is a travel insurance giant known for its wide range of plans. They offer single-trip plans, multi-trip plans, and coverage for trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and lost or stolen luggage. However, their policies might not be the best fit for those with pre-existing conditions.

4. IMG Global Travel Insurance

IMG Global stands out for its strong medical coverage, including emergency evacuation. This makes it a solid choice for travelers heading to remote areas. They also offer coverage for trip cancellation, interruption, and delay.

5. True Traveller Travel Insurance

True Traveller is well-regarded by long-term travelers and backpackers for its affordability and extensive coverage, which includes medical emergencies, repatriation, personal liability, and belongings. They also offer additional adventure activity packs for thrill-seekers.

6. Integra Global Travel Insurance

Integra Global offers comprehensive health and travel insurance plans, including policies for expatriates and those looking for long-term coverage. They stand out for their “no out-of-pocket” policy, meaning they’ll settle directly with healthcare providers where possible.

Wrapping Up

It’s essential to remember that travel insurance needs can vary significantly from one traveler to another. Always make sure the policy you choose provides adequate coverage for your specific requirements and travel plans. SafetyWing might not be the best fit for everyone-particularly for those who need coverage for trip cancellations or have specific medical needs. Always compare options and read the fine print before making your final decision.

Remember , the best travel insurance for you will depend on your specific travel needs, budget, and the kind of trip you’re planning. Always read the fine print and ensure the policy you choose provides adequate coverage for your adventure. Happy (and safe) travels!

1. What should I consider when choosing travel insurance?

Consider your destination, the length of your trip, the activities you plan to do, and your overall health. Always read the policy carefully to understand what is covered and what is not.

2. Is travel insurance always necessary?

While not always required, travel insurance is highly recommended for peace of mind during your travels. It protects you from significant financial risk should anything unexpected happen.

3. Is it better to buy travel insurance from travel agents or insurance companies?

Both can provide valid travel insurance policies, but it’s essential to check the details of the coverage. It’s often recommended to purchase insurance directly from reputable insurance companies or a comparison site for the best deal.

4. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19 related issues?

It depends on the policy. Some insurers offer coverage for COVID-19 related issues, while others may not. Always check this before purchasing.

5. Can I get a refund on my travel insurance if I don’t use it?

Most travel insurance policies are non-refundable after a certain period, usually 10-15 days after purchase, but it varies by provider and policy.

6. Can I buy travel insurance after booking my trip?

Yes, you can buy travel insurance after booking your trip. However, it’s recommended to purchase it soon after booking to maximize the coverage period and benefits, especially for trip cancellation.

7. Does travel insurance cover adventure sports?

This depends on the policy. Some travel insurance plans exclude adventure sports, while others may offer it as an add-on or part of the premium package. Always check this before purchasing if you plan to engage in such activities.

8. What if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

Most travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions, but some providers offer a waiver or add-on coverage for these conditions. You must disclose any pre-existing conditions during the application process.

9. Will travel insurance cover me if I travel to a high-risk destination?

It depends on the insurer and policy. Some policies exclude coverage for travels to high-risk areas, so it’s crucial to check this before purchasing.

10. How much does travel insurance typically cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary widely based on several factors, including the traveler’s age, destination, trip length, and the type and amount of coverage selected. Generally, it ranges from 4% to 10% of the total trip cost.

Personal Conclusion

Traveling allows us to experience the world in all its wonder, but it’s important to do so with the safety and security of travel insurance in our back pocket. Remember, the best travel insurance isn’t always the most expensive-it should cater to your specific travel needs and provide ample coverage for potential risks. Bon voyage, and travel safely!

One response to “Navigating Your Way to the Best Travel Insurance: A Comprehensive Guide”

Kevin, your insights on AI in healthcare were riveting. As a nurse with 15 years of experience, I’ve seen the shift in patient care due to technology. How do you think AI will impact bedside manners? I feel there’s a danger of losing the human touch. Also, I’ve seen AI systems like IBM Watson aid in diagnosing complex diseases; its potential to save lives is astounding! Yet, there’s the question of data privacy. It’s a double-edged sword, isn’t it? Would love to hear your thoughts on these aspects. Great read, by the way! 👏📚

I am looking to take out travel insurance for a trip later in the year (I'm from the UK). Obviously there are stacks of companies out there and many of the now offer cover for pre-existing conditions (necessary in my case) but it is difficult to decide which to trust to settle claims fairly and quickly.

The trouble is that generally on-line reviews are written by the people who have had a problem - not by the many who had a good experience. The result is that reading the review sites makes it look as though every company is equally bad!

My question is. has anyone out there had a good experience with making a claim on their travel insurance? Helpful people on the end of the phone? Claims settled quickly? Not attempting to avoid paying? ...

Thanks in advance!

Thankfully I haven't ever had to make a claim yet.

Two things I do a search for - "travel insurance best customer service" & the international number, is it easy to contact, uk based, general phone number not premium rate, opening hours. Sounds a lot but usually all on the same page.

Never leave it till the last minute as they tend to quote higher as they know you are in a rush and won't have time to really search.

Always check what they cover too (guess you do that) as I found they can be very different.

Thanks, good advice re checking ease of contact. I do check the cover but they all seem to have small differences hidden in the small print!

Oh yes. I think I was alerted when I checked Tescos because the price was so good - found the cover was full of exclusions. May have changed now. Post Office, they had no policy for me to read except one behind the counter and expected me to read it in the middle of the hubbub.

But yes the contact number is important for me, although it is free call to sales the customer services may be one that is heavily charged by your telephone provider.

Also I had a credit card blocked on my way to the airport but the opening hours meant I would have to contact them when I arrived in a far flung foreign land - very expensive. I hadn't seen that coming! Luckily I had backup.

To add to all the other useful advice given, I would suggest that you also have a look at WHICH, (Consumers Association) found in your local library and online. The thing about insurance is nowdays there are as many companies out there, as there are weeks in the year. So depending on whether, you are young or old, male or female, active or not active no problem – there is a specialist company out there for you.

The other thing to add is that the difference between a single trip policy and annual policy can often be a few pounds. I find it cheaper to stick with annual policies.

The one claim I have made related to when I was travelling for work and staying in a major hotel chain where for some reason my camera battery charger was stolen. I can only assume that whoever stole my charger assumed it was an iPod. The one good thing to come out of this is that the insurance company paid out, without any fuss for a new camera, despite that fact, that a replacement battery charger costs only £30.

Thanks for your thoughts - guess I will just have to take the plunge!

M... if you are about to buy insurance, I'd suggest also looking for companies that offer independent traveller insurance. This will provide cover for the trips where you have booked your own travel and hotel, as well as for those trips where you've used a travel agent/tour operator. More expensive, but worth thinking about. I use Marks and Spencers.. and if you have an M & S card you get a discount.

That's useful mcp. I didn't know about independent travel insurance. Goung to check that out.

“M... if you are about to buy insurance, I'd suggest also looking for companies that offer independent traveller insurance.”

MCP, hence this is the reason I would suggest looking through WHICH:

http://www.which.co.uk/money/insurance/reviews-ns/travel-insurance/

Thanks all! I saw the Which? best buys. The trouble is they're just comparing cover and benefits - they don't look at whether the companies respond quickly and pay out without loads of hassle!

Unfortunately, with insurance companies you are always going to have to face the hassle when you make a claim, it’s universal. If you are a victim of crime you will have to obtain a police report before any insurance company would pay out. To my knowledge I am not aware of any insurance company that would pay out without this.

I recently heard stories of traders that were burnt out during the riots, where they lived about the premises, being asked by their insurance companies to produce receipts for all items destroyed during the troubles.

Online Order

Just received £400 order of men’s shorts, polo shirts etc. nothing wrong with the clothes - I’ve always bought the majority of my wardrobe from M+S, but the way they have been packed and despatched leaves a lot to be desired. Some have obviously been returned before as in torn bags and they have all just been scrunched in to the smallest box possible. No folding and everything now needs ironing. Bit more care and attention would be appreciated

Bra fitting appointment.

After putting off a bra fitting for years, I arranged an appointment at the Lakeside store, my boob guru was Tina, she was very helpful and patient. I felt very uplifted ;) after the appointment ! Thank you Tina :)

Organic Zambian Honey with Walnuts - walnuts mixed with tar

I received this product as a birthday gift, because I find honey and walnuts delightful. M&S loves its lengthy, tempting product descriptions, however, I cannot believe anyone has actually tasted this product. A better description would be 'walnuts with tar' because it's so packed with nuts, one has to chisel it out of the jar, and the honey tastes like it's been mixed with tar, so even the walnuts are ruined. It's difficult to go wrong with honey and walnuts, but M&S have achieved it with this offering.

Had some furniture delivered

Had some furniture delivered, they carried one part up the stairs, put table together, refused to take packaging away. Would not carry the wardrobe upstairs as was too heavy for them to lift, even though they were told it was a 2nd floor flat.

A mixed experience - not like we remember

We used to visit M&S at Stratford, London regularly but all that has happened in the last few years stopped all that. Today we made a return trip and our experience was mixed really. We visited the cafe for cooked breakfast before shopping. We were told breakfast would be 15 mins coming which was fine. Over half an hour later still no breakfast. It turned out they had forgotten. They did apologise and got the breakfasts straight away and gave us free coffees. Probably staff shortages. We looked at furniture and curtains for a future purchase and got some nice towels and underwear which were fine. However, when my partner opened a small nightwear pack (marked small all over it) at home she found it contained XXL bottoms. It must have been packed like that at the factory. So we will have to make another trip to the store to refund / exchange. They didn't have the jacket that I wanted, and underwear my partner wanted, in store so we had to order them online for home delivery. Probably next time we will stick to online ordering if we need anything from M&S.

Really disappointed

I have been trying to sort a fairly complicated situation and have spoken to 3 people in customer services one of which was very curt and very unhelpful. Each time I was given 3 different answers to which none of them worked. Where I understand there may be limitations to what they can do I wasn't offered any onward help when I asked for it. I think the call centre may not be in this country - not a problem but there was a language and knowledge/culture barrier. I had also tried the online chat only to have the conversation ended when I hadn't finished talking! Really disappointed as the last time I spoke to someone, they were really helpful. This isn't any kind of prejudice but the last time I spoke to someone they were in the UK and was able to get to the point quickly and resolved.

I continue to be disappointed with M&S…

I continue to be disappointed with M&S over the years. Their food standards have declined and the Clothes look even more shoddy every year, a vast number being made in China. But what I really want to know is how they can now justify charging 40p for a paper Carrier Bag! Especially when other stores give them away. This is just another example of the sheer greed and profiteering that is happening throughout our major food stores. M&S are becoming sub standard on every level.

Terrible experience …. False advertising

Absolutely awful ! M and s use to be brilliant. Customer service is non existence. I have won the Percy pig competition, sent it over to them and it’s been a 3 weeks no correspondence whatsoever ! When I called them they are so unhelpful and tells you to email. Emailed 3 times .. guess what …. Yep … nothing. I will be taking this further if I don’t hear from them

Avoid M&S Hastings furniture!

Avoid M&S Hastings furniture! 1.i ordered (and paid in full) took 4 months to deliver. Tried to complain and got fobbed off. Told it was delivery chain issues, said they should make that clear at point of ordering. When it eventually arrived I was very disappointed with the quality. The wardrobe is flimsy - Ikea have similar for less £ and WAY better quality and service (could deliver in a week! Unfortunately size was slightly too big otherwise I totally would have gone there) and it has a strong chemical smell which, one week in, still hasn’t gone, absolutely do not recommend - I will certainly not be buying any furniture from them again. Very disappointing and annoying experience.

Table arrived damaged and Customer Service Awful

I ordered a bedside table. It took a month to arrive and when it did was dumped on the doorstep by DPD. I opened it to find it damaged at the corner where someone has obviously bashed it into a wall. The packaging was good with the edges protected with extra polystyrene so I can only assume they wrapped it with the damage already there. I immediately telephoned M&S only to get a South African call centre who log the call. It's now 3 days later and I've heard nothing. I also ordered a bedside table from Dunelm at a similar time. This came in perfect condition within a few days and the delivery charge was alot lower. I ordered from M&S because last time I did (10 years ago) the service was brilliant and they came in and assembled the furniture. Now I sense this will be a long and weary process to try to get my money back.

M&S Collection is excellent

M&S have some gorgeous dresses in their Collection range at the minute. They've really improved their fashion. I bought a Jersey Funnel Neck Maxi Column Dress online and it's so simple but elegant. One other dress I love is their Floral Cutout Tea dress.

Wrong item received, awful customer service

They sent me the wrong colour garden furniture. Forgivable, but the customer service experience so far is not. I'd hoped to sort everything out in a phone call but instead have entered a convoluted chain which hinges on the provision of photos to an expert furniture team who, I'm told, are the only ones qualified to confirm that the colour is wrong. I guess I should have stayed in education for longer. So far the team have been unfriendly, condescending and shown no grasp of the context; namely that I'm a customer who ordered a fairly expensive item and received the wrong thing.

Bending down to hamas supporters.

I stopped using M&S after they took down their Christmas 2023 video bending down to hamas supporters and ditching the traditional British values. This shop has no place in UK.

Cant see the point of m and s vouchers or any other vouchers. Had wallet stolen. £62 worth of m and s vouchers in there. Unable to get help or a refund of m and s. No protection whatsoever. Marks must make a fortune from lost, misplaced or not used vouchers.

PLEASE DONT ORDER M&S FURNITURE!

I spent over £2000 on a new sofa expecting an M&S product to be of good quality. It looked good for a couple of months but then after sitting on it it would lose all its shape and need plumping up. I am only a size 8 and live on my own and work full time to its only used a couple of hours a day so by far not a lot of use. I contacted M&S and they sent out Castelan their assessors (I googled them and knew soon as I read the many negative reviews I was unlikely to get anywhere with them) as per the reviews they came back and said there was no manufacture fault and it was customer neglect for not regularly plumping up!(apparently i am supposed to do it after every use! - not something i was advised and not somehting I would expect on such an expensive sofa. M&S refused any further action so I am now left with an 18 month old sofa that looks like it is 10 years old. So please do not waste your money with them as the 10 year warranty means nothing!

M&S Grimsby cafe

Just stopped at the Grimsby cafe for a coffee and breakfast. What a lovely experience the staff are so friendly and caring the coffee was exactly how I like it and the sausage ciabatta was delicious. I have to use a walking stick due to rheumatoid and osteo arthritis no problem at all please take a seat I’ll bring your tray to you. Then the ciabatta was delivered by the young man (Charlie I think) who told me he had made it extra special for me. I have to tell you as a 70 year old lady the courtesy and care in this cafe - not just towards me but everyone who came in was the best I’ve received anywhere. I’m looking forward to next week when I can come back. Thank you

Are investors undervaluing marks and spencer group plc (lon:mks) by 39%, key insights.

Using the 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity, Marks and Spencer Group fair value estimate is UK£4.00

Marks and Spencer Group is estimated to be 39% undervalued based on current share price of UK£2.46

The UK£3.04 analyst price target for MKS is 24% less than our estimate of fair value

Today we will run through one way of estimating the intrinsic value of Marks and Spencer Group plc ( LON:MKS ) by estimating the company's future cash flows and discounting them to their present value. Our analysis will employ the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model. Models like these may appear beyond the comprehension of a lay person, but they're fairly easy to follow.

We would caution that there are many ways of valuing a company and, like the DCF, each technique has advantages and disadvantages in certain scenarios. For those who are keen learners of equity analysis, the Simply Wall St analysis model here may be something of interest to you.

View our latest analysis for Marks and Spencer Group

Step By Step Through The Calculation

We use what is known as a 2-stage model, which simply means we have two different periods of growth rates for the company's cash flows. Generally the first stage is higher growth, and the second stage is a lower growth phase. In the first stage we need to estimate the cash flows to the business over the next ten years. Where possible we use analyst estimates, but when these aren't available we extrapolate the previous free cash flow (FCF) from the last estimate or reported value. We assume companies with shrinking free cash flow will slow their rate of shrinkage, and that companies with growing free cash flow will see their growth rate slow, over this period. We do this to reflect that growth tends to slow more in the early years than it does in later years.

Generally we assume that a dollar today is more valuable than a dollar in the future, and so the sum of these future cash flows is then discounted to today's value:

10-year free cash flow (FCF) forecast

("Est" = FCF growth rate estimated by Simply Wall St) Present Value of 10-year Cash Flow (PVCF) = UK£3.1b

We now need to calculate the Terminal Value, which accounts for all the future cash flows after this ten year period. For a number of reasons a very conservative growth rate is used that cannot exceed that of a country's GDP growth. In this case we have used the 5-year average of the 10-year government bond yield (1.6%) to estimate future growth. In the same way as with the 10-year 'growth' period, we discount future cash flows to today's value, using a cost of equity of 6.8%.

Terminal Value (TV) = FCF 2033 × (1 + g) ÷ (r – g) = UK£500m× (1 + 1.6%) ÷ (6.8%– 1.6%) = UK£9.8b

Present Value of Terminal Value (PVTV) = TV / (1 + r) 10 = UK£9.8b÷ ( 1 + 6.8%) 10 = UK£5.1b

The total value is the sum of cash flows for the next ten years plus the discounted terminal value, which results in the Total Equity Value, which in this case is UK£8.2b. In the final step we divide the equity value by the number of shares outstanding. Relative to the current share price of UK£2.5, the company appears quite undervalued at a 39% discount to where the stock price trades currently. Remember though, that this is just an approximate valuation, and like any complex formula - garbage in, garbage out.

The Assumptions

We would point out that the most important inputs to a discounted cash flow are the discount rate and of course the actual cash flows. You don't have to agree with these inputs, I recommend redoing the calculations yourself and playing with them. The DCF also does not consider the possible cyclicality of an industry, or a company's future capital requirements, so it does not give a full picture of a company's potential performance. Given that we are looking at Marks and Spencer Group as potential shareholders, the cost of equity is used as the discount rate, rather than the cost of capital (or weighted average cost of capital, WACC) which accounts for debt. In this calculation we've used 6.8%, which is based on a levered beta of 0.941. Beta is a measure of a stock's volatility, compared to the market as a whole. We get our beta from the industry average beta of globally comparable companies, with an imposed limit between 0.8 and 2.0, which is a reasonable range for a stable business.

Looking Ahead:

Although the valuation of a company is important, it ideally won't be the sole piece of analysis you scrutinize for a company. DCF models are not the be-all and end-all of investment valuation. Instead the best use for a DCF model is to test certain assumptions and theories to see if they would lead to the company being undervalued or overvalued. If a company grows at a different rate, or if its cost of equity or risk free rate changes sharply, the output can look very different. What is the reason for the share price sitting below the intrinsic value? For Marks and Spencer Group, we've compiled three relevant elements you should further examine:

Risks : For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Marks and Spencer Group that you should be aware of.
