System of a Down (formed in 1994) is an American alternative-metal four-piece rock band hailing from Glendale, California, in the U.S.

Prior to forming System of a Down lead vocalist Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian created Soil with other members Dave Hakopyan, Domingo Laranio and Shavo Odadjian. Hakopyan and Laranio however soon left making way for Lebanese-born drummer John Dolmayan and from the ashes of Soil came the light and sounds of System of a Down. In 1995 the band played at the Cafe Club Fais Do-Do nightclub in Los Angeles and released the now highly-sought-after Untitled 1995 Demo Tape.

The band subsequently released three more untitled demo tapes one in 1996, two in 1997 and played a number of notable Hollywood gigs including shows at Whisky-A-Go-Go and Viper Room. This led to System of a Down meeting famed producer Rick Rubin and signing with American/Columbian Records who released their eponymously-titled debut album in 1998. The album was supported by the singles “Sugar” and “Spiders” and garnered significant radio and MTV airplay.

As a result of this success the band secured opening slots for Slayer and Metallica and toured alongside Fear Factory and Incubus, before contributing to the TV show South Park’s “Chef Aid” album.

The band’s follow-up album, the ambitious “Toxicity” debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. and Canadian charts, later achieving three-times platinum certification for over 12 million copies sold. It featured the singles “Chop Suey”, “Toxicity” and “Aerials” after which System of a Down toured alongside Slipknot across the U.S. and Mexico. The band’s third album “Steal This Album!” was a response to the lax internet copywriting laws regarding online music piracy, in the same vein as Abbie Hoffman’s counter-culture book “Steal This Book”.

In 2004 System of a Down returned with the two-part album “Mesmerize/Hypnotize” with the help once again of producer Rick Rubin. The first part of the album “Mesmerize” became the band’s second No. 1 Album after “Toxicity” and the single “B.Y.O.B” earned the group a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2005, which questions the integrity of military recruitment in the U.S. The band is well-known for their politically and socially apt lyrics covering topics from bureaucracy to the War of Drugs. The second part of the album “Hypnotize” also debuted at No. 1 putting the group alongside the Beatles and 2Pac for two consecutive No. 1 albums in the same year.

Following a nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for their song “Lonely Day” System of a Down announced a significant hiatus during which members pursued other bands and solo efforts. In 2010 the band returned playing a number of headlining European shows including Download Festival, Greenfield Festival, Rock am Ring/Rock im Park, and a sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl in 2013.

Live reviews

The Forum, Inglewood, California

Date of Gig:

Monday 6th Apr '15

By 8.30pm the chants of “System! System!” have grown so loud that you wonder if they can be heard outside the building, perhaps even drowning out the jumbo jets that roar overhead as they come in to land at nearby LAX. With no support band tonight, System Of A Down were supposed to be on now, opening their Wake Up The Souls Tour with a sold out hometown show in front of 17,500 people, but since many of them are still trying to get in, traffic gridlocked, the set has been pushed back, and the anticipation grows and grows.

There's something very special about System Of A Down playing in LA. Hell, there's something special about System Of A Down playing anywhere, but particularly here, where the band began their career some 21 years ago, playing the Whiskey, the Troubadour and the Roxy. Not just that, but there is a huge Armenian population in Los Angeles, and, nearing the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide, there is a great deal of emotion in the building, like some vast family has come together. It's kind of hard to explain, but it gives you goosebumps. System Of A Down are gods to the Armenians.

It's nearing nine o'clock when a lucky and terrified looking competition winner is lead on stage to introduce the band, and before they play we watch a short and emotive film about the genocide, part one of three. There's a palpable charge in the air, and then a deafening thunder from the crowd as Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan quietly take to the stage and drift into Holy Mountains. Already this is a monumental gig.

And so, for the next two hours, System Of A Down, this most unlikely of mainstream bands, keeps seventeen thousand people on their feet, mesmerized and indeed hypnotized. Aptly, given the proximity of the airport, Jet Pilot follows Holy Mountains, its first airing since 2005, then a blast of Suite-Pee that has security dealing with a tide of crowd-surfers. Already it's madness in here and the band are only three songs in, but, that said, the band themselves seem to take a couple of songs to get fully into their stride, perhaps aware that the setlist contains songs they've never played live before. The live debut of U-Fig from 2005's Hypnotize follows Prison Song, and that's just five songs into a thirty-five song set!

Like we said, it's one of those nights. Christ, they haven't played Bubbles since 2003, and CUBErt since 2002! They've never played Dreaming before tonight! And along with those rarities come all the classics like Aerials, BYOB, Radio/Video, and the beautiful Lonely Day. The thing about System Of A Down is that, for all their righteous anger, they can touch the human soul, wake the soul on a deeply personal level, even with a crowd of this size. Daron's grandmother would have been 109 years old today, nine when the genocide happened, and she escaped here, as did so many to this sprawling madhouse. Lost In Hollywood, dedicated to her and Daron's family, sends chills down your spine, so lonely in this gigantic crowd, those hustling streets, Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard only a few miles from here.

“We've never played this long in our fucking lives!” laughs Serj, with at least a dozen tunes to go. But it's clear they're enjoying every moment, with that spark of friendship far more in evidence. And for all its melancholy and anger, and all the rest of it, there's still that quirky humour about System Of A Down, a mad genius that sets them apart from any other band. Bounce is sheer lunacy, thousands of people all leaping and down, yelling “Pogo! Pogo!” like a sea of jumping beans.

Despite chants of “One more song!” there is no encore tonight. It would be ridiculous to expect one, even with classics to spare. No-one has ever heard this much System Of A Down in one night before, a journey from those days at the Whiskey over twenty years ago to selling out the Forum with ease. Again, please!

SOAD played an amazing show. First time seeing them, and they sounded incredible. One of my all time favorite shows so far. I was in the pit, second row, I waited 7 hours just to see them. I arrived at 3:30 and they didn’t come on until 10:30pm, but they played almost 2 hours so it was fine. I waited in the second row without moving much. Once SOAD came on, the crowd pushed like crazy and got very wild. As a 5’0 female weighing about 115lbs, I thought I was going to suffocate, get squished to death, or get a limb broken. I DO NOT recommend the pit for people as small as me. I was pushing as hard as I could just to get a breathe of air, I was legitimately fighting/pushing to survive/breathe at one point. I eventually was able to grab on to the front row rail and get some air, but even then my body was being pushed up against the rail, I wouldn’t have been surprised if I had broken a rib or an arm, because that’s how much pain I was in by being pushed against the rail/people. People did not care if they hurt others and some were extremely rude. People who were barely arriving tried to push/shove their way to the front, trying to get in front of people who had been waiting 7 hours. The crowd was very crazy, people fighting and pushing each other left and right. Dozens of people were taken out by security, either because they were being too pushy/wild or because they were suffocating. I have been to dozens of music festivals ranging from EDM, hip hop, to rock music, no crowd has ever been as bad as this. I expected the pit to be bad, but never imagined that I would be fighting for my life. Overall, system of a down played an unforgettable show, but the crowd unfortunately, greatly ruined the experience for me. Will not be buying a pit ticket again, at least not for a band like SOAD.

System of a Down, perhaps one of the most iconic names in modern rock have accumulated a cult following since their formation twenty years ago. All fans of rock are encouraged to catch a show for the sheer excitement shared by both fan and artist which is rarely matched by other performers.

Having also had massive commercial success in their homeland, three out of five albums have topped the US Billboard charts so the gigs are full of the loyal followers from the beginning and those slightly later to the party. Either way, the instrumentals and skill of the likes of 'Psycho' and 'Hypnotise' keeps both singing the bands praises well after the show is over.

They are an incredibly well tuned and well practised live band who have an ingenious method of blending tracks from a variety of albums to sit so well beside each other the audience are barely left with time to applaud. There appears to be compensation for this in form of an eruption of adoration during the closing riffs of 'Sugar', the very first of their elusive single releases.

Nominated for four Grammys, a live performance from System of a Down is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser even if you’re not into rock music. Without fail, every time the lights go down at a live show, the crowd erupts into a buzzing, shouting mass of dedicated fans.

The setup of the live performances never ends to amaze me with the ease that they seamlessly flow from rocking tune and into the next. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes the audience stay on their feet for the duration of the show, swaying and jumping around appropriately. The vocals are always clear, and the famous B.Y.O.B is an ultimate crowd pleaser every single time.

Next time they tour, hopefully with a new album, I will definitely be getting my hands on some tickets, and if you’re a fan of their music, I can’t advise enough how much you will enjoy the gig. The lights, music, energy, it’s all fantastic and put together brilliantly.

Third time seeing them, they have always brought it the other two times and this was no exception, maybe even the best one. Diverse set list, getting a little off each album, sound mix was great. And more importantly they wanted to be there. Shavo and Daron interacting with the crowd, Serj smiling and laughing. John brought his kids on stage and Serj holding them while singing! It was great to see. Serj and Daron sounded great. Serj still has it. Hitting high notes, the weird vocal ticks, and then growling like on the album. Great show, whole group agreed.

System of a Down played on the most exciting, energetic, high voltage concerts I've ever seen live.

One song leading to the next one and an amazing setlist was a sure formula to have everybody jumping around, dancing and singing along. There was a fantantic energy and nobody seemed to care we were all cold and wet from standing for hours in the rain.

Nostalgic set list. Serj seemed like he wasn’t feelin’ it. Everyone else had plenty of energy.

The light show was pretty cool. The set moved and reconfigured behind them between each song.

Sound was great from the middle of the floor area.

Serj Tankian Interview About What’s Coming in 2023 for System of a Down

Serj Tankian Talked About What's Coming in 2023 for System of a Down

Serj Tankian talked with Kyle Meredith about his latest “Perplex Cities” EP album. Also, he added what’s coming in next year, and the System of a Down band’s projects, tours, and upcoming albums.

Short remember what happened 11 years ago. Since coming out of hiatus in 2011, System of a Down has periodically toured. Although in the last 17 years, only two songs, “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz,” have been successfully recorded. The conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan inspired the songs. They also released the songs in November 2020. And, with all earnings going to aid projects in System of a Down’s Armenian ancestral country.

They raised over $600,000 with funding support from followers on their social media accounts.

Serj Tankian also discusses the interactive elements he incorporates into each new album as a solo or SOAD band. The upcoming operatic suite performance, and the plans for System of a Down.

During a recent interview with Serj Tankian, he answered some questions about SOAD and his music career(transcribed by metalshout.com ):

“As of now, we haven’t talked about anything. We will be making an announcement about something next year that I can’t really tell you about. So there is that. But further than that, I can’t really say.

“Before we uh you mentioned forgive me Father what’s cool about that it’s a blues song that I had done a while back and it just kind of fit the kind of EP like the other songs. In the EP even though it’s different and I realized I was going to redo the vocals that’s the original one take vocal on it.

I was gonna redo it and then it was just had that Vibe and you know I was just riffing and not all the words are even formed and I’m like I’m gonna leave that alone you know like which you generally don’t do for a release but anyway that much for that um um my new exhibition is in La Canada California.

It’s going to start uh next weekend and the public opening is Sunday and uh I’m excited about it it’s gonna it’s they’ve just picked up half of the pieces were picked up uh originally it’s about 20 or so pieces it’s a lot of work and some small some kind of you know a little medium. And some larger works um and it is an anthology of sorts because there’s stuff from way back I started painting in 2013. Or I think my first exhibition sorry I should say it was in 2013. And uh so there’s stuff from way back there and there’s stuff.

I just did a couple of paintings that I just finished like a few weeks ago. And, so it’s like a really cool retrospective. I guess um and all my main paintings are musically scored. So there are musical scores you can listen to each painting the same app that we’re using for “Perplex Cities” our Lupa is what we use for our paintings so you can walk in with your smartphone and listen to the whole exhibition one painting at a time. And it’s a really great experiences that people enjoy so come check it out if you’re in California. And uh enjoy yeah it’s on till November 1st, 2022. ”

When I conceived of possibly doing another record with the guys from System of a Down a few years back, I started working on a set of songs that I arranged in rock format for that purpose. As we weren’t able to see eye to eye on the vision going forward with a System of a Down album, I decided to release these songs under my moniker.”

This past September 2022, he answered:

“This whole collection of songs within Perplex Cities is a completely different sound than what I’ve done before. More electronic, subtle and deeper in terms of its layers of presentation musically. Perplex Cities gives off an aura that is unique and unlike my previous releases.

I’m always trying to create new and interesting ways to connect with people via my music. We made some amazing videos for the last EP Elasticity, so I wanted to try something different for Perplex Cities. I love the idea of appearing in the room with someone listening to my music. It’s intimate, fun, and different.”

At that time Serj Tankian shared the Perplex Cities VR experience :

At that time Serj Tankian shared the Perplex Cities VR experience:

“Your ability to shoot on the beat will enhance your gameplay experience. The more in sync you are with the rhythm, the more intense the music will become and the more destruction you will cause. Defeat the demon hordes with a skull-clad blade or a wide range of murderous guns.

Different about this game. You gotta really be a part of the song and the rhythm to gain the points. It’s really incredible, really fast, really heavy, very interesting, and very progressive. And that’s why I decided to join and be a part of this. I loved the song. It’s 7 minutes, and it takes you on this crazy journey. It’s very fast and very rhythmical so your fingers… you will probably lose some ligaments.”

We don’t know if SOAD will continue on tour in 2023. But we are sure about they will go on a worldwide tour as soon as possible. We will let you know when it happens.

NFL: APR 25 2024 Draft

In the days after the NFL Draft everyone is looking for which teams were the winners. Those who turned their fortunes around, or did enough to get over the hump. Often we don’t discuss the players — more specifically how they faired in draft transaction. Looking through that lens there’s one colossal winner from the 2024 class: J.J. McCarthy.

Rewind four months and the idea of McCarthy being a first round pick is laughable — let alone a Top 10 pick. Here’s a quarterback who unquestionably has talent, he’s definitely led Michigan to wins, but never before had we seen a quarterback who failed to throw for 3,000 yards, who only attempted 332 passes, whose own coach rather leaned on the run game than have a game hinge on McCarthy end up being one of the first quarterbacks off the board.

We’ve seen exactly this scenario before. Precisely a National Championship-winning quarterback who led an offense primarily based off the run.

Greg McElroy vs. J.J. McCarthy

McElroy was a 7th round pick, lasted one year in the NFL, and was garbage. There are very clear differences here, make no mistake. McCarthy is actually an athlete, whereas McElroy had the same level of natural athleticism as a car salesman. However, the stunning difference in draft position between the two shows us how much Josh Allen has warped the process when it comes to quarterbacks.

Every QB now that doesn’t pass the conventional tests is met with “well, maybe he’s Josh Allen?” because the Bills’ QB defied all draft logic by becoming one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks without the college statistics of film to back it up. When it comes to McCarthy there’s a lot of stock being put into “he’s a winner” and the belief that his impressive numbers can be extrapolated out when asked to throw 450+ times as an NFL starter is asked to.

So, we circle back to why McCarthy is a huge winner. This is the right place, at the right time, with the right agent. Everything inflating his stock to push him into a position where he was able to become a Top 10 pick in a very unusual draft class. Desperation forced teams to take QBs earlier than they normally would have, McCarthy’s agent inflated his positive traits to the moon and turned him into a can’t miss prospect — but there’s also a huge team factor here in Minnesota.

One could argue that no rookie in the history of the modern NFL has landed in a better spot than McCarthy. Minnesota signing Sam Darnold will mean there’s no pressure to start right now. The rookie can sit for a year, learn the Kevin O’Connell system, and more importantly be tutored up by quarterbacks coach Josh McCown. Then, in a year’s time, he gets to come out in a top-tier offense with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson — with protection to boot.

Furthermore, the quarterback he’s replacing in Kirk Cousins is certainly great, but it’s not like Jordan Love trying to replace Aaron Rodgers or Mac Jones following Tom Brady. Clearing the Cousins bar isn’t insurmountable, because he never actually won anything in Minnesota.

So, now the table is set. McCarthy could end up being brilliant, or this will be a massive whiff. Either way it doesn’t change that how his camp handled this process from the National Championship until the draft was masterful, and the timing allowed a talented, but questionable quarterback to become a Top 10 pick, and land on the best team who took a passer over the weekend.

Winner: Pittsburgh Steelers

Just a monster weekend from Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin and Co.

Up and down the board this team knew where it couldn’t afford to take risk, and where it could — playingthe draft like a fiddle. Offensive line was a major need to course correct from the disastrous Kenny Pickett era, and Pittsburgh ended up with two starters in Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier.

Then you’ve got the Wilson brigade, with Roman Wilson coming in to be a new target for Russell Wilson — coupled with the bold move to take a sliding Payton Wilson at linebacker and this class goes to another level.

Payton Wilson’s fall was due to concerns over his medicals — including the stunning revelation he didn’t have an ACL in one knee, but you know who didn’t as well? Steelers great Hines Ward.

The NC State linebacker was one of the best in class, a borderline 1st round pick if he was medically clear, and now he goes to a team that will be able to transform the instinctual tackling machine into a monster.

Even deeper down the board the team just kept finding value, making this a landmark draft.

Winner: Philadelphia Eagles

Water is wet. The Eagles win again. It was a big weekend for teams in Pennsylvania, as the Eagles join their cousins in the west to dominate the board once more.

Their back-to-back DB picks of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean fix the biggest issue the Eagles have been having in their defense. This is a team without a ton of holes, and yet somehow they managed to plug all of them once more, picking value in the process, and trading around the board to amass more future draft capital.

Cap it all off with the feel-good pick of Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 5th and this was just a monster haul.

Loser: Atlanta Falcons

There’s nothing left to say. Like the Eagles this team entered the draft with only a few holes, and left with none of them really filled. This draft will be studied for years.

Winner: Nick Saban

If you told me a week ago that Saban would be one of the highlights of draft weekend I would have thought you had lost it. For the entire draft the former Alabama coach was interesting, engaging, and made the broadcast on ABC better.

Plot twist of the century, but I actually want to see more from Saban the analyst.

Billie Eilish, Green Day and other artists back bill that would reform live-event ticketing system

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act," the letter says.

Over 250 popular musicians — including Billie Eilish, Green Day and Dave Matthews — signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that aims to reform the live-event ticketing system.

The Fans First Act , which was introduced and referred to the Commerce Committee in December, hopes to remedy three major issues in the ticketing industry: ticket transparency, consumer protection and preventing bad actors from charging exorbitant resale prices. It is one of several bills introduced in recent years aimed at combating unfair ticketing practices, including the BOSS and SWIFT Act and the TICKET Act .

Fix the Tix, a coalition of live event industry organizations spearheaded by the National Independent Venue Association and Eventbrite, organized the letter, which was addressed to Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, the ranking member.

Other artists who signed include: Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz, Lorde, Sia, Train, Fall Out Boy, Graham Nash, Becky G and Chappell Roan.

Discontent toward the ticketing industry, especially Ticketmaster, reached a fever pitch in recent years. Fans sued Ticketmaster in 2022 after the company struggled to keep up with the demand for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. The Eras Tour debacle led to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to examine Ticketmaster’s outsize role in the industry. (Swift was not among the artists who signed the letter.)

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price," the letter, a copy of which NBC News viewed, states.

Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association, said in a statement that “the time for comprehensive ticketing reform is now.”

“It is clear that all participants of the live event ecosystem, from artists, to venues, to fans, demand comprehensive ticketing reform and consumer protection against the predatory ticket resale practices that have deeply afflicted live entertainment in the United States,” Parker said.

The Fans First Act would require all ticket sellers and resellers to disclose and break down the total cost of a ticket, including fees. It would also bolster the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) Act, which was introduced in 2016 to prohibit scalpers from using software to buy high volumes of tickets, by further prohibiting the use of bots to purchase tickets.

"We, as artists, as music lovers, and as concert attendees ourselves, urge you to support the Fans First Act to combat predatory resellers’ deceptive ticketing practices and the secondary platforms, which also profit from these practices," the letter sent Thursday states. "Predatory resellers should not be more profitable than the people dedicating their lives to their art."

The senators co-sponsoring the bill are: John Cornyn, R-Texas; Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.; Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn.; Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M.; Roger Wicker, R-Miss.; Peter Welch, D-Vt.; Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss; and Mark Kelly, D-Ariz.

Live Nation previously issued its support for the bill, saying the company welcomes “legislation that brings positive reform to live event ticketing.”

The company, which owns Ticketmaster, is expected to be served an antitrust lawsuit by the Justice Department as soon as next month, according to The Wall Street Journal .

How to plan an architectural walking tour of Kaunas, Lithuania’s capital of culture

With its medieval Old Town and baroque monastery sitting alongside a modernist ensemble recently awarded World Heritage status, Kaunas is the perfect place to unravel the architectural paradoxes of the Baltic states.

system of a down tour 2023 reddit

Located 64 miles west of Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, Kaunas is a small city of less than half a million people that often goes unnoticed. But to those in the know, its interwar architecture is every bit as valuable as Riga’s Art Nouveau gems or Tallinn’s gothic beauties. This was validated in late 2023 when UNESCO added Modernist Kaunas to the World Heritage register and in 2022 when Kaunas was awarded the title of   European Capital of Culture .

When Kaunas was chosen as Lithuania’s provisional capital in 1920, it ushered in two decades of rapid development, giving rise to an architectural golden age. The city’s history reaches much further back, however, and a survey of the skyline shows that Kaunas was able to embrace progress without turning its back on the past. Modernism flourished in the presence of gothic, baroque and neo-byzantine architecture, fusing the styles of the day with references to Lithuania’s rich vernacular.

To best discover the city’s architectural highlights, dedicate a full day to cover Kaunas’s core and the nearby Pažaislis Monastery on foot, calling on the funicular and trolleybus system as required.

Christ’s Resurrection Church

Start by orienting yourself with a sweeping view from the rooftop observation deck at Christ’s Resurrection Church. Positioned atop Žaliakalnis   (‘Green Hill’), the largest basilica in the Baltic states deviates from other Roman Catholic designs with its sharp lines and soaring skyscraper-like verticality. Sketched out in the days following Lithuania’s independence from the Russian Empire in 1918, the church’s cornerstone was laid in 1934, though its construction was halted by the Soviet occupation two decades later. Repurposed as a radio factory, its long overdue consecration only came in 2004. On nearby Ožeškienės Street, the 1937 Evangelical Reformed Church is a scaled-down version of Christ’s Resurrection, complete with a miniature duplicate of its 230ft-tall tower.

Putvinskio Street

Descend Žaliakalnis   by funicular to Putvinskio Street, where Kaunas’s unique brand of modernism is on proud display. An assortment of buildings were constructed in the New Town between 1919 and 1939, with architects synthesising deco, Bauhaus and functionalist tenants to carve out their own oeuvre. An easy stroll down tree-lined Putvinskio reveals a gamut of notable addresses, many of them private apartment houses for prominent physicians, lawyers and city officials. Highlights include the imposing MK Čiurlionis Museum of Art , dedicated to the Lithuanian painter-composer, and the Antanas Žmuidzinavičius residence , which now displays its patron’s unusual sculpture collection under the auspices of the Devils’ Museum . Further along the street, The Kaunas Artists’ House , designed in 1930 by Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, features reading rooms and performance spaces.

The Amsterdam School Museum

From the eastern end of Putvinskio Street, skirt the park to find another iconic edifice. A lone example of the Amsterdam School architectural style, this convex facade was erected in 1928 by Jakub Peras. Set inside one of its 1,464sq-ft apartments, the Amsterdam School Museum , established by Karolis Banys and Petras Gaidamavičius — the same duo behind the Art Deco Museum two blocks away — offers visitors a chance to cross the threshold and experience a preserved period interior. The five-room exhibition is a window onto life in the First Lithuanian Republic and the optimism of the interwar years. Set aside two hours for the tour — tickets should be purchased in advance.

Laisvės Avenue

Cross the road and head one block west to Laisvės (‘Liberty’) Avenue, one of Europe’s longest pedestrianised streets. Each step down this one-mile, tree-lined boulevard highlights a different side of Kaunas’s urban identity. Start with the neo-byzantine Church of St Michael the Archangel and culminate with the Central Post Office, another example of interwar architecture that artfully incorporates traditional Lithuanian flourishes including carved wooden windows. Pause for a pick-me-up at one of the sidewalk cafes then continue past the National Kaunas Drama Theatre , the Puppet Theatre and the spectacular State Musical Theatre . The latter was built in 1892 and reconstructed in 1925 with a neo-baroque style in mind.

Perkūnas House

Leave the leafy avenues of the New Town behind and delve into the tightly wound cobbled streets of Kaunas Old Town. While here, make sure to visit the 14th-century, gothic Kaunas Castle , which houses an exhibition dedicated to its illustrious history. From here, pick a path through the low-rise buildings of the Old Town towards the riverfront, where the Perkūnas House immediately distinguishes itself with its ornamental red brick facade. Built in the late 15th century by merchants of the Hanseatic League, its name actually honours Lithuania’s pre-Christian traditions (Perkūnas being the Baltic god of thunder). The first drama theatre of Kaunas was established here in 1843, however at present Perkūnas House belongs to the Jesuit Gymnasium, who are still known to host occasional performances.

Pažaislis Monastery

To end the day, hop on a trolleybus and follow the Nemunas river east. Situated on a peninsula close to the Kaunas Reservoir, Pažaislis Monastery dates to 1667 and is a paragon of baroque ideals. Italian architect Giovanni Battista Frediani endowed the complex with its rich marble interiors, while the 140 surviving frescoes were painted by Florentine master Mikelios Arkangelo Palonio. The largest monastery ensemble in Lithuania, it contains various crypts, a museum and a hotel-restaurant all of which is surrounded by parklands with hiking trails and river beaches. Every summer, the Sisters of St Casimir , a Roman Catholic community of women founded in 1907, hold the Pažaislis Music Festival at the monastery. This is Lithuania’s biggest classical music gala, set to take place on 31 May until 25 August, 2024.
