The Good in Us by Mary L. Trump

Going Boldly

What's a little star trek among friends.

mary trump star trek

I’ve been a guest on my friend Bob Cesca’s show a number of times over the last two years. (You should definitely check it out —Bob is a great host.) I last sat down for an interview with him in March. We were discussing the potentially impending indictments against Donald, House Republicans intention to hold the debt ceiling hostage—you know, the usual, non-stop insanity of the modern news cycle. Towards the end of our time together, Bob had a listener question for me: What is my favorite Star Trek episode?

Bob and I already knew we shared a love of all things Star Trek so we chatted about Season 3 of Star Trek Picard , the upcoming Season 2 of Strange New Worlds (episode one just dropped today), and how important Star Trek has been as a mirror of and corrective to late 20th and early 21st century earth.

Bob was just about to wrap up, when I said, “We should start a show that’s just about [Star Trek]. It could be Star Trek as counter-point to the horrors of our times.”

And so we did!

It’s an excuse to watch more Star Trek in all of its iterations (which I’ve been doing when I was six) yes, but it’s also a way to detach a bit from the ongoing, and sometimes extremely disruptive, swirl of bad news cycles, bad media takes, and bad faith Republicans.

I know a podcast about the ways in which Star Trek has shone, and continues to shine, a light on socio-cultural issues, while showing us the potential for a better future, may not be of interest to you. And I know reading a romance novel that’s the result of a collaboration between me and E. Jean Carroll and Jen Taub may also not be of interest to you. But both of these new projects actually make it easier for me, as Bob eloquently put it, to stick my face “in the white-hot plasma stream of American politics” every day.

If you are interested, I’d love for you to join us.

You can listen to Trek Politics here (it will also be on YouTube in the not-too-distant future) and/or you can catch up with what’s going on with The Italian Lesson over at Backstory Serial:

Donald Trump 'Dissolving Before Our Eyes'—Mary Trump

Donald Trump's estranged niece believes the former president is "dissolving before our eyes" amid his "hush money" trial.

Mary Trump is the daughter of the business mogul's late brother Fred Trump Jr. and a vocal critic of her uncle. In 2020, the psychologist penned the best-selling exposé Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man, which criticized the real estate magnate.

Now, during an appearance on The Back Room with Andy Ostroy podcast, Mary Trump said the 77-year-old is struggling to cope with his New York criminal trial .

Proceedings began at Manhattan Crown Court on April 15. Donald Trump is facing 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, reportedly to hide "hush money" payments to Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 general election.

The adult film actress claimed to have had a one-night stand with Trump in 2006. The Republican politician has denied the affair allegations, as well as the fraud charges.

"It was so demoralizing when the prosecution stood up in front of Justice Merchan and opened with 'we're not asking for jail time, because we know that's what Donald Trump is angling for,'" Mary Trump told Ostroy on Saturday.

"Who cares what he's angling for? If it riles up his ever-shrinking face, who cares if it benefits him in some way? It doesn't matter."

Mary Trump was discussing the real estate magnate's alleged gag order breaches . Donald Trump has been accused of violating a gag order preventing him from discussing people involved in the trial.

Justice Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the case, has yet to make a ruling. The prosecution has suggested a $10,000 fine, but has "not yet" requested jail time.

Although she believes Donald Trump is "angling for the martyrdom," Mary Trump claimed The Apprentice star is not coping with the trial, describing him as "dissolving before our eyes."

"You seriously think that guy—ya know, Mr. Hair Product and Bronzer—wants to be in a jail cell overnight?" Mary Trump continued. "Without any of his products and without his cellphone?

"Are you kidding? Imagine what he's going to look like in the morning?"

Newsweek has reached out to Donald Trump for comment via email.

This isn't the first time that Mary Trump has commented on her uncle's behavior during the trial.

Following reports that Donald Trump dozed off during court, Mary Trump accused the politician of preferring to "sleep through" the trial , showing "contempt" for the jury.

"What message does it send everybody else in the courtroom that he can't be bothered to keep his eyes open?" the 58-year-old wrote in her The Good in Us newsletter on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Mary Trump claimed that her uncle's bigg est fear is "being seen as a loser," and that the trial will show he is "nothing of what he has claimed to be."

"As someone who has known Donald for almost six decades (oy), I can tell you that beneath the bluster, there lies a fear so profound, it consumes him," Mary Trump wrote on her Substack blog.

"It's not the fear of losing his wealth or power or his status—although, to be clear, he lives in terror of these things as well—it's something more personal: It's the fear of being seen as a loser."

Star Trek Stars Join Forces to Trek Against Trump By Getting Out the Vote For Clinton

Image of Teresa Jusino

A few days ago, an account appeared on Facebook and Twitter called Trek Against Trump. Their goal? To get out the vote for Hillary Clinton, because if one believes in the optimistic, inclusive world of Star Trek , a vote for a man who is vocally racist, sexist, and who thinks himself smarter than other people simply because he’s managed to stay rich by not paying taxes doesn’t make sense. You’d think.

Over 100 members of the Star Trek family —  from across all the series and films, as well as family members of the deceased —  came together to endorse the Trek Against Trump effort, with more seemingly adding themselves all the time. They hope to inspire Trek fans to recognize that Trump is completely antithetical to what Trek stands for, encourage them to vote and, what’s more, to make a conscious vote for Clinton, rather than a third party candidate. Here is their statement in full:

Star Trek has always offered a positive vision of the future, a vision of hope and optimism, and most importantly, a vision of inclusion, where people of all races are accorded equal respect and dignity, where individual beliefs and lifestyles are respected so long as they pose no threat to others. We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump. His election would take this country backward, perhaps disastrously. We need to elect a president who will move this country forward into the kind of future we all dream of: where personal differences are understood and accepted, where science overrules superstition, where people work together instead of against each other. The resolution of conflicts on Star Trek was never easy. Don’t remain aloof –vote! We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed. That is both illogical and inaccurate. Either Secretary Clinton or Mr. Trump will occupy the White House. One is an amateur with a contemptuous ignorance of national laws and international realities, while the other has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation. If, as some say, the government is broken, a protest vote will not fix it. Have you just turned 18? Have you moved? Have you never voted before? Some states have early registration (early October) and/or absentee ballots. You can’t vote if you are not registered. So make it so. Go to https://www.rockthevote.com , a non-profit, non-partisan organization, and fulfill your civic duty. Because, damn it, you are a citizen of the USA, with an obligation to take part in our democracy! Do this not merely for yourself but for all the generations that follow. Vote for a future of enlightenment and inclusion, a future that will someday lead us to the stars.

But you didn’t think that something like this would be universally accepted, did you? Of course not. The comment sections over at the Facebook page have gotten heated, as conservative Trek fans, ahem, express their displeasure with the Star Trek family for, as one commenter put it, “alienating half their fan base.” And, of course, you got the same old tired comments about how some wish that Hollywood types would stop expressing political opinions.

Of course, if a conservative Hollywood type expresses their political opinion, their freedom of speech must be protected at all times!

I, for one, am thrilled that so many people whose work I love and respect are coming together in the name of a franchise that has been a part of me since childhood to elect a person who will ensure that the country stays safe for people like me: female, Latina, LGBTQIA, non-wealthy.

teresa captain's chair

“I don’t have time to deal with the Romulans right now. I’m getting out the vote for HIllary.”

Trump has not proven that he cares about any of these things. In fact, he’s been actively misogynistic , racist , harmful to the LGBTQIA community , and vocal about his superiority complex because he’s rich. A vote for Trump is a vote against people like me. It’s a vote in favor of considering me a second-class citizen at all my intersections. The thought that there are people in this world who would support a man like that genuinely frightens me.

But I’ve never been more proud to be a Star Trek fan than I am right now.
