Reno Day Trips to Virginia City

Virginia City is definitely one of the most unique destinations in the state of Nevada, and some would say in the country. Once a thriving mining town, Virginia City is a must-visit place for anyone looking for rich history, a refreshing sip of sarsaparilla and a hint of spookiness. With so much history and lore in Virginia City and close proximity to town, you just might decide to make this your destination for multiple Reno day trips .

When you walk along the wooden sidewalks of Virginia City , you will truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Between Mackay Mansion, the Silver Queen Hotel, Historic Fourth Ward School and several other historic landmarks, Virginia City is reportedly one of the most haunted places in Nevada .

The driving distance from Reno, NV to Virginia City is about 26 miles, winding into the Virginia foothills and offering incredible views of the Sierra Nevada mountains . You can almost imagine being in the early settlers’ dust-covered shoes as you trek up Nevada State Route 341. With its sharp twists, turns and panoramic views of Reno below, this is certainly not a boring drive.

Carson City

Take a drive to Nevada’s state capital , a short distance from Reno. Interesting architecture, quaint neighborhoods and educational museums are abundant in Carson City , NV .

Some of the most notable historic landmarks in Nevada can be found along the Kit Carson Trail . With more than 60 stops at historical landmarks and only a hop, jump or skip away from Reno, Carson City makes one of the best day trips from Reno with the Kit Carson Trail as your destination.

Learn about the Comstock mines and Carson City’s history at Nevada State Museum or visit Nevada State Railroad Museum . The whole family will enjoy time spent at The Children’s Museum. Visit the Nevada State Capitol, a stately building that is rife with history and breathtaking architecture.

The Reno to Carson City drive time is about 30 minutes, making this one of the easiest day trips from Reno.

More Adventurous Nevada Trips

The open road is calling, and you should answer. Adventurous spirits will love this category of Nevada trips , including ghost towns, mining relics and historic native lore.

Unionville

Looking for a drive from Reno that leads to a ghost town ? Discover Mark Twain’s old cabin near Unionville, where he used to live. Unionville is located southwest from Star Peak, about a two and a half hour drive from Reno.

Located a little over three hours from the Biggest Little City, in Mineral County, checking out Candelaria is easily done in one day. Previously mined for silver, this ghost town still boasts ruins from its mercantile building. You can access Candelaria by exiting U.S. 95, between Tonopah and Hawthorne.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park

Located about an hour southeast of Reno, Fort Churchill stands as a piece of the past in beautiful ruin. Fort Churchill was used as a stop along the Pony Express route and a protected space for settlers in the 1860s. Follow the trails and you will reach the historic ruins. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or a history buff, you will have a great trip to Fort Churchill State Historic Park. Plus, the short travel time to such a beautiful and historical destination can’t be beat.

Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake is full of history and Native American lore. The Paiute tribe fished for giant Lahontan cutthroat trout in Pyramid Lake for centuries and it continues to be a destination for fishermen in search of the big one.

The lake’s deep turquoise waters are set against several large rock formations, including the sacred Stone Mother. Pyramid Lake is also home to Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, a larger island located in the lake.

The history and legend of Pyramid Lake is enticing and warrants a day spent exploring the shores and area around the lake. Be mindful of tribal boundaries and permits needed for day use or camping at the lake.

To learn more about the Paiute Tribe’s ties to Lake Pyramid, visit Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Museum when you arrive.

landmarks-of-nevada

Whether you’re looking for some of the most interesting historical landmarks in Nevada or you are just in the mood for a day trip from Reno, driving out to any of these locations is sure to quench your thirst for adventure. You might learn something, too!

  • Weezer1960 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply Amazing Trip Book this trip if you can! You will not be disappointed! Our guide, “Snowshoe” John was very knowledgeable of the area and gave us so much great info all along the tour. We stopped many times along the way to get off the bus, walk around, take pictures and enjoy the beautiful weather. He made the trip so much more enjoyable because we didn’t have to find out own way around the park. During the longer travel stretches to and from the park, we watched short videos about different things in the park and some history of the park. We saw things that we would not have seen if on our own and we managed to pack so many wonderful things into this one day trip. John prepared a wonderful breakfast and lunch for us to enjoy on two of the stops. We will definitely book with this business the next time we are in the area. Read more Written August 28, 2023

We traveled around Lake Tahoe with our driver giving us information about the sights we were seeing and more. We even went to Squaw Valley, the sight of the Olympics. Every time we stopped we had plenty of time to look around and take lots of pictures. We stopped for lunch and shopping midway through our day, then continued on going around the entire lake! It was a wonderful day and our driver, Chris, was terrific! I recommend this tour if you want to see the sights around Lake Tahoe without doing the driving. Read more Written August 16, 2023

Know More about this tour

Your guide will provide lodging pickup beginning at 9:00 AM in the Tahoe Scenic Tours van. Exact pickup time for your location will be confirmed the night before. From South Lake Tahoe, guests will experience a 40 minute drive up the scenic Geiger Grade. Your guide will share history, facts, important sights, and tell stories on the drive to Virginia City, where the largest silver rush created a city that was once the Richest City in America in a matter of a few years.

Upon arrival in Virginia City, your guide will offer itinerary suggestions to help determine your best experience for 2 hours of Wild West exploration. Guests will have time to enjoy the VT Railroad, take a trolley tour, tour historic mines, visit one of the many museums, shop, and dine in one of the many historic restaurants. The VT Railroad offers a 45 minute ride in a historic locomotive that travels on the same path that carried materials and workers to the mines in the 1860s, as well as a 20 minute tour of the town. The VT Railroad is the best way to get a lay of the land and hear the brief, yet rich history. For those that want a more hands on experience of what it took to work in a silver mine, join a mine tour. In these tours, you will walk hundreds of feet underground where the mine guide vividly paints the grueling picture of the miner's work day. There are also 15 museums and historic sites for those that want a true history lesson. Guests can also follow the wooden sidewalks tracing South C Street, the main street in Virginia City. The main street is full of unique and historic restaurants and shops to explore. If you are lucky, there might be some wild and fun events such as civil war reenactments and ostrich races happening during your visit. After visiting Virginia City, Tahoe Scenic Tours will transport your group back to your lodging between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm.

Reno-Tahoe shows, now through July: Aaron Lewis, Gipsy Kings, Parliament-Funkadelic and more

Summer is the time for music festivals, and the Reno-Tahoe area has a ton of these on the way for the entertainment season. Jazz, Latin, rock, reggae, electronic music and country are all represented with special events at various venues. Sometimes it’s a one-day affair; other times you’ll have to figure out camping for a long weekend.

There are also several concert series taking place at local casinos, while a handful of other fests feature local musical talent more prominently than others. They play at 7 p.m. at Lo-Bar Social, 445 California Ave., Reno.

This free show is July 28. Details at lobarsocial.com.

Boney James
