Metallica ‘Kick A– and Celebrate Life’ at Surprisingly Feel-Good U.S. Tour Opener

The M72 World Tour stateside kickoff at MetLife stadium in New Jersey -- which also doubled as a birthday party for Metallica's frontman -- was an altogether life-affirming experience.

No Stories, No Surrender: Bruce Springsteen Makes Up for Lost Time With Searing, 'Letter to…

Trending on billboard.

And both the song selection and the performance was pretty impeccable throughout. It felt a privilege to get near 10 minutes each of both the spellbinding Master of Puppets instrumental chugger “Orion” and the underrated 21st century “Simple Man”-turned-“Free Bird” power ballad “The Day That Never Comes,” with the band — minus the occasional Lars aberration — in total lockstep, guitarist Kirk Hammett’s solos in particular sounding as explosive and radiant as ever. Even most of the material from the new 72 Seasons , which can feel a little flat on record, came alive in this setting — sounding more credible than ever as forgotten b-sides or second-side cuts from the band’s classic period. (“If Darkness Had a Son,” though, will likely always be a tough hang.)

The show closed with “Master of Puppets” — a signature song which, after three and a half decades of fan worship, also become the band’s unlikely first Hot 100 top 40 hit in nearly 15 years last summer. The most indelible image of the evening — in our section at least — was a series of four pre-teens in matching Metallica shirts losing their minds (and eventually their shirts) to “Master,” all members-in-training of the Hellfire Club , no doubt. One of the adults supervising them was also wearing a shirt with a Napster logo — seemingly as neither an ironic nor confrontational gesture, but rather just as a winking acknowledgment of how much water under the bridge band and audience share after 40 years.

The most emotional moment of the night, however, came earlier, as Hetfield acknowledged thanked the crowd for “remembering my birthday” — the frontman having turned 60 just on Thursday. “My seventh decade on the planet… I can’t believe it,” he rhapsodized from on stage. “Younger me would be saying, ‘You made it. You effing made it.'” Then, before launching into “Fade to Black” — from the band’s second album, and still one of the most vivid, heartbreaking, and yet strangely empowering songs ever written about suicidal ideation — he reflected, “I’m glad I didn’t listen to my head when I was young.” It’s a long way to the top, but Hetfield and Metallica made a very good case on Friday for why getting there is worth the trip.

“Creeping Death” “Harvester of Sorrow” “Holier Than Thou” “King Nothing” “72 Seasons” “If Darkness Had a Son” “Fade to Black” “Shadows Follow” “Orion” “Nothing Else Matters” “Sad But True” “The Day That Never Comes” “Battery” “Fuel” “Seek and Destroy” “Master of Puppets”

5-minute read.

metallica tour east rutherford

Legendary heavy metal band Metallica is coming to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford this weekend.

It's a bittersweet moment. The shows, Friday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 6, are the first for Metallica in New Jersey since the deaths of Jonny and Marsha Zazula, whose Old Bridge-based record label, Megaforce Records, helped them become stars.

“In 1982, when no one wanted to take a chance on four kids from California playing a crazy brand of metal, Jonny and Marsha did, and the rest, as they say, is history,” said the band on social media when Jonny passed way in February 2022 . “Metallica would not be who we are or where we are today without Jon Zazula and his wife, Marsha.”

Marsha passed away in January 2021 after battling cancer.

A demo tape of Metallica’s “No Life ’til Leather” found its way to the Zazulas at the Rock and Roll Heaven record store in East Brunswick, and the couple decided to invite the band to Old Bridge to record the songs on the demo for a proper album.

In turn, Rock and Roll Heaven customers became the Old Bridge Metal Militia, who served as a support group for the Megaforce metal bands in the early ’80s. The members of Metallica lived in Jersey with the Zazulas and Militia members Ray Dill and Joe Chimienti during the band’s early years.

“When we first started with the group in ’83 we envisioned this,” said Jonny of the superstardom Metallica achieved to the USA Today Network. “We knew we were dealing with a group that could potentially rival Led Zeppelin. They were destined for greatness.”

The MetLife shows will kick off the North American leg of Metallica's M72 World Tour, named after the group's new album, “72 Seasons.”

Pantera, featuring Jackson's Zakk Wylde on guitar, and Mammoth WVH, featuring Wolfgang Van Halen, open the show on Friday. Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills open Sunday. It's called a “No Repeat Weekend,” with different opening acts and two completely different setlists.

The M72 tour features a “bold” new circular stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to center stage, surrounded by the band.

Tickets start at $90 plus fees for a single show, and go up to $1,400 for two nights in the Snake Pit through Ticketmaster.

A portion of proceeds from the shows go to Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation, which seeks to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band and combat food insecurity; provides disaster relief; and bestows scholarships.

Metallica, Pantera and Mammoth WVH Hit the US: Set List, Videos

Metallica kicked off the North American leg of their M72 World Tour on Friday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with support from Pantera and Mammoth WVH .

You can see set lists, videos and photos from all three acts below.

Mammoth WVH had plenty of new material to showcase during their opening slot, as the Wolfgang Van Halen -led band just released its sophomore album, Mammoth II . Pantera, who reunited last December, was up next, playing 11 songs from across their catalog.

Then came the stars of the evening, Metallica, who took the stage around 9 p.m. and tore through a 16-song set which included the live debut of "Shadows Follow" from  72 Seasons .  (So far, the band has played seven of its 12 songs in concert.)

"We are so grateful to be up there kicking ass and celebrating life with you," frontman  James Hetfield  said to the crowd [via Billboard ]. He also thanked them for “remembering my birthday” — Hetfield turned 60 the day before on Aug. 3. "My seventh decade on the planet...I can't believe it," he said. "Younger me would be saying, 'You made it. You effing made it.'"

Hetfield previously described the 72 Seasons ' concept in an official statement: "Seventy-two seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

The M72 World Tour will continue on Sunday at the same venue with support from Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills. Metallica is employing a “No Repeat Weekend” in each city, playing entirely different sets on each night. The trek will barrel across North America through November before resuming in Europe next May.
