Metallica Announces 2022 U.S. Stadium Shows Ft. Greta Van Fleet, Ice Nine Kills

The iconic heavy metal group Metallica   has announced a pair of 2022 stadium shows set to take place on the East Coast this summer. Both shows will feature special guests Greta Van Fleet  and  Ice Nine Kills .

First, on August 11th, Metallica will host a performance at  Highmark Stadium  in Buffalo, NY. Then, on August 14th, the band will make the few-hour drive to Pittsburgh, PA and stage a concert at  PNC Park . Metallica previously played at Highmark on July 25th, 1992, and Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium on July 26th, 1992.

Presale tickets will be available to Legacy Fan Club members at 9 a.m. and General Fan Club members at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 28th. The presale window will then end on Thursday, March 3rd, at 10 p.m. before a general on-sale Friday, March 4th, at 10 a.m. All times ET.

Before the summer shows get underway, Metallica will perform tomorrow, February 25th, at  Allegiant Stadium  in Las Vegas, NV. Then in April the band will head to South America for shows in Argentina and Brazil before returning stateside for a run of festivals, including  BottleRock   and  Boston Calling . Security Screening

Metal detector screening and a search of all bags and other items being carried in will take place at stadium gates. There are no provisions available at the stadium to store or safeguard any prohibited bags. Guests will be asked to return prohibited items to their cars.

Metallica's hit-filled Vegas setlist with supports Greta Van Fleet and Ice Nine Kills is giving us a FOMO overload

Metallica 's first show of 2022 proved to be a triumphant affair as the band made their 2022 live debut at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Playing for the first time since their mammoth 40th Anniversary celebrations in San Francisco in December 2021, Metallica played things relatively safe with a hits-packed setlist of live favourites.

With support coming from rising stars Ice Nine Kills and Greta Van Fleet , we figured it was a good time to get a good look at everything we've learned from Metallica's first show of 2022...

Ice Nine Kills' live shows are as insane as their videos

Ice Nine Kills made quite the stir with last year's The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood , the band's music videos helping to cement their reputation for brilliantly unhinged, Broadway-style metalcore . 

Judging from the videos emerging from Vegas, their live set is just as filled with Alice Cooper/GWAR style theatricality, complete with severed heads. It's one hell of a show and justifies their inclusion at #3 the Hammer best albums of 2021 list. 

Massive stages suit Ice Nine Kills well

The likes of Architects , Parkway Drive and Bullet For My Valentine have long-since proven that metalcore can go over exceptionally well on massive stages. But honestly, watching videos of Ice Nine Kills own every inch of space at stadium level is exactly the kind of inspiring thing we want to see from up-and-coming metal bands in 2022. No wonder they were bumped up to Second Stage at this year's Download Festival... 

Greta Van Fleet are stadium rock reinvented for the 2020s

Yes, yes we all know the Led Zeppelin comparisons when it comes to Greta Van Fleet, but you know what else they do like Led Zeppelin ? Own stadiums . 

GvF have been in ascendance for some time now, so seeing them up and playing stadiums alongside Metallica feels like just one step removed from the band coming back to headline those same stages one day - and we're very here for it.

We'll happily see drum solos retired, mind

We love the return of so many great rock tropes of the 70s, but drum solos aren't one of them. Up there with 25-minute noodling guitar solos, we shouldn't need some overblown segment where the rest of the band nip backstage for 'refreshments' to show us how good you are - that's what the songs are for. 

No-one does intros like Metallica

It's a given fact of life that Metallica will take to the stage to the stirring notes of Ennio Morricone's The Ecstasy Of Gold , but the inclusion of ACDC's It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll ) has added a touch of rock'n'roll nostalgia in recent years. Add to that the fact the band kicked off with Whiplash and we're talking full-throttle thrash brilliance to get right into the swing of things.

Metallica are sticking to the hits

Anyone hoping the inclusion of Load , St. Anger and Death Magneti c rarities in the 40th Anniversary shows might prompt some stylistic risk-taking was left disappointed by Metallica's first setlist of 2022.

That said, you really can't argue with Metallica sticking to the hits, especially when you're talking about some of the biggest songs in the entire metal genre. Master Of Puppets , For Whom The Bell Tolls , Sad But True - these are the songs lesser bands' careers are made of, and Metallica hand them out like they're on sale. 

James Hetfield's words of encouragement are a light in these dark times

Fade To Black may have some (unearned) infamy among the 80s metal elite who couldn't quite reconcile the idea of acoustic guitars and thrash coming together, but it also opened an entirely different branch of introspective, heartfelt songwriting to the band. 

Considering James Hetfield's public battles with his own demons, hearing him give a heartfelt speech during Fade To Black is exactly the kind of showing we want from our metal icons in 2022. "This song goes out to all who struggle, because we all do. If you think you're the only one... it's a lie. You can talk to your friends, talk to somebody - because you are not alone."

We're jealous of anyone that gets to see Metallica this year

With their calendar slots already filling up (including festival dates in Europe this summer), it's looking likely that Metallica's schedule for 2022 might be almost completely announced.

That means the band's appearance at Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium is one of only a handful of US stadium headline shows this year. Meanwhile, fans in the UK will need to cross over to the continent this summer if we've any hope of seeing Metallica in 2022 (don't tempt us). 

Metallica are looking - and sounding - great going into 2022

With a full stadium set-up behind them, Metallica were able to bring their production to life in Las Vegas. It looked utterly incredible and now we've got a serious case of FOMO.

Metallica's encore is insane

Cliché as the whole 'encore' is, there's an inherent thrill to watching a massive band return after a packed setlist for one last thunder round the course. Metallica are no exception and the final triarchy of Battery , Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman is about as perfect a summation of the band's offering as you can hope to find.

Fact: Thrash metal keeps you young

Metallica's M72 tour will rock the world for 2 years to support new '72 Seasons' album

Metallica plans to storm the world for two years with its massive M72 tour.

The veteran hard rockers will play a spate of dates across 2023-24 in Europe, the U.S., South America and Mexico, hitting each city for two nights with two different set lists for what the band has dubbed a "No Repeat Weekend."

Metallica – comprised of  James Hetfield , Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – will launch their massive run April 27 in Amsterdam, with the band’s first U.S. shows landing Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Other cities the in-the-round production will visit on its 2023 cycle include Glendale, Arizona, St. Louis and Detroit. The 2024 U.S. shows will kick off Aug. 2 and Aug. 4, 2024, in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with other two-night stands planned for Chicago, Minneapolis and Seattle.

Metallica has also corralled some heavy-hitting opening acts: Pantera, Mammoth WVH , Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills will rotate among the U.S. dates.

Two-day tickets – including discounted seats for fans under 16 – will go on sale Dec. 2 via ticketmaster.com. Single tickets will be available starting Jan. 20. A Citi card pre-sale runs from 2 p.m. local time Wednesday through 10 p.m. local time Dec. 1.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket will benefit the band’s All Within My Hands foundation, which provides funds to combat food insecurity and aid disaster relief efforts worldwide.

To complement the tour, Metallica will unveil its 12th studio album, "72 Seasons," on April 14, prefaced by blistering new single, "Lux Æterna," available now for streaming/downloading. Other tracks include "Crown of Barbed Wire," "You Must Burn!" and "If Darkness Had a Son."

The 12-song collection is the band’s first full-length release of new material since 2016’s "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct."

Metallica has been a steady presence on the road this year with stadium dates throughout Europe and the U.S., thrilling fans with set lists that spanned the band’s earliest days ("Whiplash," "Creeping Death"), mainstream rock hits ("Enter Sandman," "Nothing Else Matters") and their Metallica-ized version of the ‘60s-era Irish folk song, "Whiskey in the Jar."

The band also received an injection of pop culture relevancy when its 1986 song "Master of Puppets" became a viral favorite  this summer after its use in the Season 4 finale of Netflix's "Stranger Things."

Electrifying as ever with their incredible performance and stage presence, the members of Metallica delivered the goods and more last night with a nice cross section of numbers running the gamut of their colossal catalog! There were occasional pauses to interact and converse with the crowd, but the band segued their way into one song after another the majority of the evening. The night opened up with an intro of the Ecstasy of Gold followed by the title cut off of the band's latest effort Hard Wired to Self Destruct. James Hetfield's vocals were as strong as ever from beginning to end. Kirk Hammett engaged in one brain crushing guitar solo after another, Lars Ulrich brought a great and almost nonstop back beat with his furious drumming and Rob Trujillo provided excellent bass work including a great treatment of the solo the late Cliff Burton was well known for on Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). During the aforementioned bass solo video footage of Burton performing onstage accented the music perfectly. Other exceptional highlights included Kirk's stellar guitar shredding accompanied frequently by usage of his wah pedal. Cuts such as Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death and the encore Enter Sandman in particular contained solos showcasing his seemingly boundless talent! Things heated up literally as well during the songs Fight Fire with Fire and Sandman when pyrotechnics were activated and flames shot up from the stage. At the end Ulrich tossed sticks out into the audience. Hetfield, Trujillo and Hammett threw and shook picks from little jack o' lantern tins out into the crowd, the picks of which boasting the band logo as well as the theatre's location and concert date on them. Great souvenirs in even something so small right there as my husband and I each scooped one up off the floor! A grand night out, the next one of which cannot come soon enough!

The impatient wait had been going on for months - I booked this show when tickets went on sale back in March or whenever it was, and October had take so long to come around - but finally it was here: Metallica day!

The day started with a trip to the pop-up merch store in London, then onto the O2 for an agonising queue (good thing it's what us Brits do best, apart from moan about it of course) before finally getting in and finding my seat - which, by pure luck, was a superb view. Again, what felt like days, but in reality was only 30-40 mins wait, the lights dimmed, the background music shut off, and the familiar notes of the intro track, "The Ecstasy of Gold", complete with video footage from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", began to ring out, to rapturous roaring and whistling from the 20,000 strong crowd. The hairs on my arms are standing on end just recounting it for this review. And then we were in: full-bore, 100mph, Metallica took to the stage and belted out song after song after song with barely a moment to catch your breath before the next does of thrash metal came your way. "Thrash metal?", I hear you say, "Metallica hasn't been thrash metal since the 80's!". Oh my friend, trust me when I say thrash metal - we had some of the best early work represented tonight, not least with half a dozen track from the new album "Hardwired... To Self Destruct" that included unrelenting riff after riff, from the likes of "Hardwired", "Atlas Rise", "Moth Into Flame", coupled with one of the heaviest tracks they've ever written "Dream No More", plus "Halo on Fire" and "Now That We're Dead". All segmented in-between some of the bands greatest songs; "Seek & Destroy", "Through The Never", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Through The Never", "One", "Sad But True", "Fuel", the obligatory cover, this time from the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling", before ending the show with "Master of Puppets".

Of course, it wasn't the end - back for the encore the intro to "Damage Inc" came on, before they ripped all the way through it, eventually slowing the pace to play the ever-loved "Nothing Else Matters" and finally ending on probably their most well known song "Enter Sandman"

It was a great varied selection of tunes that spans most of their career - the only notable exceptions being there was nothing from "Load", "St Anger" or the previous record "Death Magnetic". But otherwise all the other studio albums were represented. Some guitar and bass doodles from Kirk and Rob, before Rob gave us a wonderful tribute to Cliff by playing "Anesthesia".

If you get the chance to go, then go see this show - it's truly magnificent, from a band with 36 years experience in being the biggest metal band on the planet, and it shows you just why they are. I just wish I had a ticket for tomorrow night too.

2nd September show in Cobenhagen.

Tallica promised us a unique show because this concert was postponed show from February. Many people travel a long way to see them in February including me traveling from Iceland.

The moment when I heard Seek & Destory in the #3rd slot then I knew this was going to be something special.

They performed Thought The Never in slot #4 and that song has not been played for 4 years. The next song was The Day That Never Comes and we did not believe that because in our wildest dreams we hoped to have that on the list, we jumped like there was no day tomorrow.

Dream No More was in the slot #7 and that was the second time Metallica has played that song. It was nice to hear Breadfan in slot #10. We saw many drons flying over the stage in Moth Into Flame, which was amazing!

Fight Fire With Fire was in the encore faster than ever.

Me and my friends walked away from Royal Arena in great mood with a big smile on our faces and with a hoarse throut, like James was in February.

About the unique show as we where promised in February it was only UNIQUE for 2 days because Amsterdam got almost the same setlist. But we got a free T-shirt, that was probably the unique thing for us.

We where hoping for some live debut like Murder One, Spit Out The Bones but it did not happend.

The song ManUnkind was performed tonight in Paris (10th September) and that is unique.

Iceland has been waiting since 2004 for Metallica to come back to Iceland when they held the biggest indore concert in Reykjavík. We do not want to wait another 23 years like we did before 2004.
