You will drive along Lake Hafravatn and up to the top of Hafrafell mountain. There you can enjoy awe-inspiring views over Reykjavík and feel the magic of the midnight sun.

During this time of year, the skylights are ablaze with a colorful display of gold and orange just before midnight. These colors get more intense as dusk approaches. The sky illuminates for a few magic moments before the sun rises again.

Experience Iceland’s (almost) everlasting sunset surrounded by raw nature!

If you’re joining us in the months of  May, June or July, prepare yourself for some awe-inspiring displays of nature. Just before midnight, Mother Nature lights the sky ablaze with supercharged colors of gold and orange that further intensify as dusk approaches. As the sun slips just beyond the horizon, the sky illuminates at midnight for a few magic moments before the sun rises again. Our Midnight Sun ATV Tour takes to you the highest mountain peaks of Reykjavík to watch this enchanting display first hand.

AS DUSK SLOWLY FALLS OVER REYKJAVÍK, YOUR ADVENTURE IS SOON TO BEGIN

As you anxiously await your upcoming late-night expedition in the lobby of your hotel, your charming and occasionally humorous Safari Quads guide will arrive! He will pick you up and take you to our Safari Quads Base Camp located only 15 minutes from downtown. You’ll say goodbye to the buzzing city of Reykjavík as you are engulfed in the wilderness and rugged landscape.

ESCAPE THE NORM, THIS TRIP CAN ONLY BE FOUND IN ICELAND

On arrival, your guide will give you a rundown on our safety rules and get you geared up! We welcome both newbies and enthusiasts on this tour. By this point, you’ll be tingling with excitement and looking cool in your gear! You’ll hit the trails at roughly 9:00 PM for two hours to watch the sun’s mystical dance on the horizon from the seat of your ATV en route to the highest point of the trails to watch the main event.

PRESS ON TO THE PEAKS, MOTHER NATURE IS WAITING FOR YOU

From asphalt and gravel roads to mountain tracks, rocky paths to steep slopes, you’ll get the thrill of quad biking on a range of terrains. All the while you will be surrounded by stunning scenery as the sun slowly sneaks towards the land. Your destinations for viewing the midnight sun are two magnificent mountains: Hafrafell and Úlfarsfell. Each peak offers unbelievable views across the capital area and the Reykjanes Peninsula. The ultimate place for viewing the midnight sun in action! Your guide will give you time to relax on the peaks to quite literally watch the sunset and rise all in the span of a handful of minutes.

Tracks are dependent on weather and trail conditions.

Please keep in mind that the visibility of the midnight sun can be affected by a cloud cover of which we have no control over. Sometimes this makes for a more beautiful sunset, other times it can block its view. It all depends on Mother Nature’s will! Please note: we’ll be adjusting the start times for each month of the midnight sun to best coordinate with current sunrise and sunset times.

2hr Midnight Sun ATV Adventure from Reykjavik

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: 8:30 am
  • Includes:  Gear: overalls, rain gear, helmets, balaclavas, gloves

Let’s start off with the magnificent 2hr Midnight Sun ATV Adventure from Reykjavik . The entire tour is actually a bit more than 4 hours, however, as they do include a pickup and drop-off from your hotel in Reykjavik.

Riding around Iceland on ATVs is already a blast, but doing so in the glow of the midnight sun is something we’re sure will be a new experience for you!

Before we even got to the tour, we knew it was going to be a good one, thanks to the supreme communication beforehand from the staff. Once you’re picked up from your hotel, you’ll have some time to get comfy in the roomy seats and enjoy the commentary about the area from your guides.

They know a ton about really everything, and they make the entire trip engaging. You’ll get to choose to ride either by yourself or with a passenger upon booking. This is great, as those people who are nervous to ride alone don’t have to worry about steering or anything – just enjoying the experience.

Regardless, everyone will receive a briefing on how to use the quads before you get started. Once everyone is ready, you’ll all follow your guide into the ethereal glow of the midnight sun.

Traverse roads, gravel trails, and all kinds of different terrain that Iceland is full of. You’ll then ascend the Hafrafell and Úlfarsfellpeaks, where you’ll get to see all over the capital city of Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Around midnight, you’ll see the phenomenon where the sun sets and rises again within just a few minutes! The sky turns a neon electric orange, gold, and red which is simply beautiful to see. You’ll then head down for more fun, riding through streams and dirt trails!

To go on this tour, you must provide a driver’s license to prove you can drive an ATV. You and your group will also have to pass a COVID-19 screening to be allowed to participate in the tour. There are no airport transfer or pick-up options, so you will need to figure out a way to the meeting spot yourself.

10. 2 Hour ATV Buggy Ride across a Black Sand Beach (Hella, Year-Round)

The 2 Hour ATV Buggy Ride across a Black Sand Beach tour is an adrenaline-pumping adventure across Iceland’s south coast. People who go on this tour reported seeing beautiful landscapes and enjoying the smaller group size of five people.

This tour costs $292 per person and lasts for two hours. The price is the same for both kids and adults, but any kids under seven years old are restricted from participating. This tour begins at the Buggy X-Treme base camp in the city of Hella. It is an excellent tour for families because the maximum capacity is only five people. This leads to a more intimate and private ATV tour setting.

The tour is available during all months of the year but is more popular in the summer, where you can explore the black sun beaches with the summer sun beating down on you. This ATV tour offers several customizable departure times, including 9:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 20:00.  You will not find this tour too difficult or dangerous. The beaches you will be riding on are not too rough of terrain, and you will be instructed about and given proper safety equipment.

Another important consideration is that every traveler is required to pass a COVID-19 PCR test upon landing in Iceland. Failure to do so will disqualify you from the tour. Also, if you plan to drive an ATV, you must be at least 17 years old and provide proof of your driver’s license.

What to know for Best ATV Trip Tours in Iceland

When you are looking into ATV trip tours in Iceland, there are a few important considerations you should research. Some of these essential points are listed below:

Airport Transfer Arrival/Departure: Since ATV trip tours often only last a few hours, not all offer airport transfer options. If you are signed up for an ATV tour, you should check with the tour company and see what pick-up services they offer. Some tours provide free pickup from the airport or any accommodation, while others charge a fee for that service.

Accommodation Cost: ATV tours will most likely not cover any accommodation costs during your stay in Iceland. If you are visiting Iceland, it is recommended that you pick a package that covers accommodation because Iceland hotels regularly run out of space, especially during the busy season.

Personal Travel Agent: When taking an Iceland trip, it is highly recommended that you consider employing a personal travel agent. A personal travel agent will know all the ins and outs of planning a great trip and eliminating the stress of making everything work. Also, if something comes up during your stay, a personal travel agent will have the connections to get it fixed.

Price Range: The price range of an average ATV tour will be $100-$400. Most of the tours on this list will fall into this range.

Price Factors: A few factors can change the price of an ATV tour. The biggest one is how long it lasts. Some tours only last a few hours, while others last the whole day. The longer a tour is, the more it is going to cost. Also, summer tours tend to outprice tours from other seasons because there is more demand. The type of vehicle in an ATV tour can also affect the price. A higher-end buggy with extra safety features costs more to rent than a standard ATV.

Popularity: ATV tours are popular among visitors to Iceland. One reason is that you get to speed along trails that would take you hours to walk across to see a special sight deep into Iceland’s wilderness. Another reason why these tours are popular is that you can drive the tour vehicle itself. You get a feeling of control on an ATV tour that you won’t find on a boat tour or airplane tour.

COVID-19 Precautions: Many ATV tours will follow proper COVID-19 precautions to reduce the change of their guests and staff to exposure. Most tours will require guests to pass a COVID-19 screening upon landing in Iceland to be allowed to participate in a tour. They will also need their staff to maintain a safe social distance, wear masks, and regularly use hand sanitizer.

Exploring Iceland’s unique and beautiful nature is truly special, with its lava fields, black sand beaches and geothermal areas. Many areas are rugged and often can only be experienced on vehicles designed to handle such landscapes, which is where the ATV and Buggy tours come in.

Taking an ATV or a Buggy Tour in Iceland lets participants experience beautiful panoramic views and explore areas often inaccessible otherwise. It also gets the heart pumping and adrenaline flowing on an adventurous excursion.

Below, you will see more details about the many ATV and Buggy tours in Iceland.

ATV Tours in Iceland

The rugged lava fields, lush valleys and sandy beaches make Iceland the perfect destination for ATV adventures. The tours take participants on a journey exploring what feels like a no-man’s land with open areas and panoramic views, in addition to scouting some of the country’s must-visit attractions.

The ATVs are all simple to use, and the tour is beginner-friendly.

The journey starts with a tour along Hafravatn, a beautiful secluded lake which is popular for fishing and surrounded by picturesque landscapes. The journey then heads upwards until you reach the top of Hafrafell mountain. From the mountain top, you will get to admire the views over the Hengill mountain range, Bláfjöll mountain range, and Esja mountain.

The tour’s base is located only 15 minutes from Reykjavík’s centre.

After riding through the beautiful black sand beach, the journey is headed to the famous DC3 plane wreck, a US Navy aircraft that crashed into Sólheimasandur beach in 1973. After taking in the unique sight, the journey leads back towards Jökulsá river and back along the mountains towards the base.

Your guide to Iceland’s Midnight Sun: When and where to experience this jaw-dropping natural event

Midnight sun in Iceland

If you’ve ever wished that vacation days were longer so you had more time for sightseeing and activities without having to pack up and leave “before it gets dark”, then a trip to Iceland to experience the Midnight Sun is perfect for you. Here’s everything you need to know about this unusual phenomenon in Iceland and how you can best enjoy it.

What is the Midnight Sun?

Midnight sun in Nordkapp, Norway

Countries in the Northern Hemisphere experience longer daylight hours during summer when the upper half of the earth is tilted towards the sun. The further north you are, the longer these daylight hours are. The Midnight Sun phenomenon happens in countries far north enough that even in the wee hours when the sun should have set, the skies remain bright.

Iceland is one of the best places to see the Midnight Sun as it’s located on the edge of the Arctic Circle . You can also encounter the Midnight Sun in countries like Greenland , Norway , Finland , Sweden , Russia , and Canada .

When is the best time to experience the Midnight Sun in Iceland?

As the days get warmer, they slowly get longer—the daily amount of daylight increases by about one to three minutes per day from December to June. While you can experience the Midnight Sun in Iceland from May to early August, the longest and brightest nights will happen around late June to early July.

The longest day of the year is the Summer Solstice or Sumarsólstöður , which falls on 21 June. Around this time of year, Iceland experiences up to 24 hours of daylight, where the sun never sets in its northernmost regions like Akureyri , Ísafjörður , and Grimsey . In the capital Reykjavik , which is towards the south, the sun does set at about midnight and rises barely three hours later, all without ever turning completely dark.

Northern Lights in Iceland

This also explains why Iceland’s winters have such short days, with the Winter Solstice on 21 December usually being the shortest day in the year. Despite the lack of sunlight, Iceland still sees many visitors during this time who come to catch the Northern Lights instead–you can’t see them during the summer because there’s just too much daylight!

Best ways to experience the Midnight Sun in Iceland

Be ready to take full advantage of the extended daylight hours to pack in all the activities you want to do in Iceland. If it's too busy during the day, you can return at night when there are generally fewer tourists around. The Midnight Sun also means longer golden hours—you can get better-lit photos without the crowds.

1. Take part in a Midnight Sun event

The long summer days are perfect for all sorts of festivals. For avid runners, the annual Midnight Sun Run takes place around the Summer Solstice in Laugardalur Valley of Reykjavik, where runners can run a 5km, 10km, or a half marathon route while basking in the Midnight Sun.

Those who prefer water sports should check out the Midnight Sun Whitewater Festival , where you can do a little midnight rafting and race kayaks in the twilight hours. Golfers up in Akureyri can join the Arctic Open Golf Championship and tee off under the Midnight Sun. Families can head up to the northernmost point on the island of Grímsey for their Solstice Festival .

2. Go whale-watching

Whale watching in Húsavík, Iceland

Whale watching in Iceland is best done in Húsavík up north. With less boat activity during the night, the chances of spotting whales are even higher during the Midnight Sun —nothing is more special than watching these gentle giants surface against a glowing sky. Take a RIB boat for a more up-close experience.

3. Head on an outdoor adventure

A group of people on a snowmobile tour in Iceland

You’ll probably never get to ride across the wild terrain at night in most places because it gets too dark to be safe. With Iceland’s Midnight Sun, you can safely rev across the landscape on an ATV while admiring the pink and gold sky all around you.

Other things you can consider include taking a Midnight Sun snowmobile tour over the Langjökull Glacier or a leisurely kayaking tour to admire the twilight view at Mount Kirkjufell .

4. Have a soak in a geothermal bath

People soaking in the Blue lagoon in Iceland

Soak in the beautiful scenery and Iceland’s famous geothermal hot spring baths all at once. Several hot springs, like the famous Blue Lagoon , extend their opening hours during summer so you can enjoy soaking in the healing waters under the Midnight Sun.

5. Snap some photos during golden hour

The Midnight Sun is a boon for avid photographers who usually wait for the ‘Golden Hour’ to take the best photos. This is usually right after sunrise and just before sunset, when the sun is low in the sky and casts a warm light and soft shadows—it’s considered the best natural lighting for landscape photography.

Golden hour typically lasts for 30-60 minutes in most places but during the Midnight Sun in Iceland, this elusive window is extended to several hours, giving photographers more time and opportunities to get those perfect shots. You’ll need to do some research to find the best times and locations or consider joining a photography tour for some professional help instead.

How to sleep through the Midnight Sun

While the Midnight Sun lets you maximize your days with more daylight hours, you still need adequate sleep to rest and recharge. This perpetual daylight can be quite disruptive to your natural sleep cycle which usually follows a circadian rhythm—where you wake up when it’s light and sleep when it’s dark. The bright nights may make it hard for you to fall asleep naturally.

Some tips for sensitive sleepers: if your hotel has windows, make sure to shut the curtains at least 30-60 minutes before you usually sleep to simulate darkness falling. Alternatively, a good sleep mask is another way to block out the sunlight and get some good rest even when the sun is still out.

The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon where the sun hardly sets during the summertime.

June is the perfect time to witness Iceland's midnight sun, where the sky is painted in shades of reds, pinks, and purples. The peak of the country's midnight sun occurs on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which typically falls on June 21 (sometimes on June 20). This is due to Iceland's proximity to the Arctic Circle.

Although summer officially begins in June in Iceland, the country experiences the brightness of the midnight sun as early as mid-May and as late as mid-August. During multiple days from May to July, Iceland experiences 24-hour daylights where the sun doesn’t set.

This phenomenon enables travelers to explore the country’s natural wonders and stunning landscapes in bright conditions, no matter the time.

However, getting good sleep during continuous daylight can be challenging. It’s recommended to use dark curtains or a sleep eye mask for a more relaxing and proper sleep.

However, not all F-roads will be passable at the beginning of the month, so it's best to always check the current road conditions.

When driving in the Icelandic countryside, be cautious of gravel roads as they can reduce traction and increase puncture risks, especially for small cars.

Icelandic sheep are let out of farm enclosures and allowed to roam freely in the countryside; thus, drivers need to be aware of stray sheep as they may react slowly to oncoming cars due to their poor eyesight and hearing.

June is arguably the best time of the year to drive in Iceland.

You do not need an International Driving Permit if your license is in the Latin alphabet with a photo. Otherwise, you'll need to apply for one. Additionally, you must have a driver's license for at least one year to be able to rent a car in Iceland.

June is an excellent time to visit Iceland as it marks the start of summer. This means longer days, and the majority of attractions are open 24/7.

The favorable weather conditions make driving safe, with most roads open, including the rugged ones to the highlands.

In June, the type of car needed depends on your itinerary. A 4x4 vehicle is required for mountain roads, while a small car is recommended for road trips along the Road Ring.

When driving in the countryside, always be aware of the stray sheep that are free to roam.

Summer's extended daylight hours mean Iceland's renowned northern lights are not visible in June. However, you can see the midnight sun instead.

That should cover everything you must know about driving in Iceland in June. Are you ready to embark on a self-drive adventure in Iceland? Where are you planning to go? Please share your plans and experiences in the comment section below!
