Recap: Mini-Mekons at the Avalon Lounge Catskill 12/9/22 -By: Steven Stock

Written by staff on december 14, 2022.

After checking the band’s itinerary, I assumed the Mini-Mekons booked a gig in Catskill as a shakedown cruise of sorts, a chance to work out any kinks in their set before playing a couple of dates in “The City” on the weekend.

In truth, the only evidence of any kinks came midway through the second set. When Jon Langford (guitar/vocals/harmonica) was sidelined by a broken string on his guitar, singer/kazooist Sally Timms covered with a beautiful rendition of John Anderson’s “Wild And Blue,” followed by guitarist John Szymanski leading the crowd in a seemingly impromptu sing-along on the Kinks’ “Sunny Afternoon.”  There was something magical about being in a room where well over half the people knew the words to a 1966 single that peaked at #14 on the U.S. Billboard chart. We may be ancient, but at least we have impeccable taste!

It was a lovely moment, one of many that this stripped-down four-piece version of the Mekons conjured across two sets at the sold-out Avalon Lounge last Friday. The band’s history stretches all the way back to 1976, when five art students at the University of Leeds (UK) banded together.

Since then the Mekons have followed a meandering path from punk to Americana to dub to a mixed-media collaboration with novelist Kathy Acker and then back to punk: thirty albums altogether if you include compilations. The band’s discography grows even more tangled when you consider Langford’s other projects, which include solo albums, the Three Johns, the Waco Brothers, the Pine Valley Cosmonauts and the Freakons.

Langford and Timms have subsequently relocated to Chicago, while other members of the full eight-piece Mekons retinue remain in the UK, so in recent years the band’s touring lineup has varied. Violinist Jean Cook completed the quartet for this show, playing gorgeous soaring melodies on the country-tinged songs, but also contributing some avant-garde dissonance to more raucous selections such as “1234 Ever.”

Friday’s performance boasted a lot of covers: Anderson’s “Seminole Wind,” the Handsome Family’s “The Sad Milkman,” Will Oldham’s “Mombasa” and best of all Alejandro Escovedo’s heartbreaking “Broken Bottle.” With perhaps a surfeit of Langford and Timms side-and-solo projects represented, that only left time for a handful of actual Mekons’ songs, largely drawn from their 80s Americana-inflected phase: “Last Dance,” “Hard To Be Human,” “Slightly South Of The Border” and “Abernant.”

Timms has for some reason become enamoured with the kazoo this year, and it must be said that not every track necessarily benefited from this. In fact, I gotta take a stand here: no track benefited from this. In years past it was usually Langford who might carry a good jape too far and too long – perhaps the kazoo is Sally’s long-awaited revenge?

For me the show’s highlight came late in the second set, with a taut version of “Millionaire” from 1989’s finest album, Mekons Rock’n’Roll . “It’s quite lovely here,” observed Langford after Szymanski brought “Millionaire” to a close with a tasty guitar solo, and indeed the band sounded great in the small room, loud but crystal-clear with Avalon owner Liam Singer at the mixing desk.

The room full of folks of a certain age, along with a solitary youngster wearing volume-limiting headphones, didn’t seem to mind the early start time of 6:30 at all. “This is a late gig for Sally,” quipped Langford as the clock neared 8:20 and the band eased into their final number “Sentimental Marching Song,” with its apt refrain “he needs a little love at closing time.”

mini-Mekons Featuring Jon Langford & Sally Timms

“The Mekons are the most revolutionary group in the history of rock ’n’ roll” wrote rock critic Lester Bangs. This genre-defying collective emerged from the 1977 British punk scene, where they progressed from socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams.

About The Mini Mekons

Mini-Mekons was the moniker used to identify an abbreviated version of the enduring U.K. folk-punk group the Mekons when they set out on a 2014 tour of Scotland in tandem with the American singer and songwriter Robbie Fulks. Featuring longtime Mekons members Jon Langford (vocals, guitar, percussion), Sally Timms (vocals), Suzie Honeyman (violin), and Rico Bell (guitar, vocals), as well as frequent associate Lu Edmonds (saz, harmonium, vocals), the group was absent drummer Steve Goulding and guitarist and vocalist Tom Greenhalgh, perhaps the reason for the unusual billing. During a 2014 Scottish tour, Fulks and the Mini-Mekons spent several days on the island of Jura, where the population of sheep significantly outnumbers that of humans, and a distillery is the principal employer. During their stay on the island, Fulks and the Mekons wrote and recorded a handful of songs, which were made available on vinyl as a special Record Store Day 2015 release, fittingly titled Jura. The limited-edition release quickly sold out, and Bloodshot Records re-released Jura on CD in August 2016. ~ Mark Deming

The Mekons & Robbie Fulks: Jura

by Hal Horowitz November 25, 2015, 11:31 am

Mekons and Robbie Fulks - Jura

Videos by American Songwriter

The Mekons & Robbie Fulks Jura (Bloodshot) Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

This meeting between the scrappy likes of American alt-country/folk-rocker Fulks and UK punk/folk veterans the Mekons was birthed from a 2014 tour that featured both Bloodshot artists. Someone decided it would be a good idea to haul away to the remote titular island off the coast of Scotland (that has “more sheep than people”) and let fly on a set of acoustic, predominantly traditional fare. These 11 tracks, recorded in just three days with Fulks and a five member subset of Jon Langford’s ever evolving group dubbed the “mini-Mekons,” are the result.

It’s an organic, rootsy set of typically edgy and sea shanty-styled UK folk tunes, murder ballads and general story songs that feel like they have been around for hundreds of years. Accordions, fiddles, guitars and harmonium combine on the songs, many about the ocean such as “The Last Fish in the Sea,” Shine on Silver Seas,” “Land Ahoy!” and others. They capture the rustic, Scottish vibe with authenticity and occasionally the inebriated, shaggy tilt that has characterized much of the Mekons’ output over the decades. The waltz time drunken rambling of “Beaten and Broken” and “I Say Hang Him!” sound like something the Pogues might have dug into. And anytime we get to hear the wonderful vocals of Sally Timms, as on a few key, mostly somber tracks, it’s always a treat, even if some are hypnotic dirges.

Fulks only sings lead on three tunes such as the bluesy harmonica driven “Refill,” the disc’s most American-styled selection that even mentions Missouri. He is also featured on the humorous “Getting on With It,” a lusty slice of Brit folk that suggests a body of land getting discovered by explorers might not be in everyone’s best interest.

The album exudes the salty air of the conditions it was recorded in, which makes it a success on that level. How much your tastes lean towards undiluted, traditional Brit folk will gauge your enjoyment for this batch of unadulterated music in that genre, played and conceived with the purest of intentions.

Note: This release will only available as a digital download and limited edition vinyl release for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on Nov. 27, 2015.

In tennis parlance, the mini driver is a “second serve” option off the tee. It’s called upon when a driver would go too far and bring trouble into play, or when the ball needs to be shaped a bit more with a draw or fade. With more loft than a driver, it produces more spin, which makes shaping the ball easier. The heads of mini drivers are also smaller than a driver, as the name insinuates.

TaylorMade released its original BRNR Mini Driver in April 2023 and since then, multiple PGA TOUR players have put it in play including Tommy Fleetwood, Adam Scott and Jake Knapp, the rookie who won this year’s Mexico Open at Vidanta.

Fleetwood first put a BRNR Mini into play at the 2023 RBC Heritage and still has the club in his bag today.

“For me, if I had to hit a fairway, I’m more comfortable hitting a driver than a 3-wood,” Fleetwood said. “I would tee the driver down, and I would hit a little cut, or a neck-y cut in the fairway. The 3-wood isn’t for that. The 3-wood, generally, is a pretty hot club that I’ll hit from 270 or 280 in the fairway on a par 5. You get some courses where a 3-wood is not always necessary. (With the BRNR) you put a normal swing on it, and I’m more comfortable hitting it straight. It’s a replacement for a 3-wood, basically.”

Knapp, who used a BRNR during his victory in Mexico, echoed Fleetwood’s sentiments:

“I put in a 3-wood every once in a while, but I was just never able to find one that I loved,” Knapp said. “Three-woods, in general, I just hit on the bottom of the face. They spin a lot and don’t go anywhere. (The BRNR is) just an easier club to hit than a 3-wood. … It’s really just a tee club and kind of a fairway finder for me.”

Now, a year later and with plenty of PGA TOUR validation, TaylorMade is releasing a new BRNR Mini Driver Copper, which includes the same technologies and designs as the original, except the company has amped up the nostalgia factor.

Playing off the iconic Burner driver from the late-'90s, the new BRNR Mini Driver Copper has additional copper styling on the crown and a large retro TaylorMade logo centered on the sole. It also comes stock with a copper-and-black UST Mamiya ProForce 65 Retor Burner Edition shaft and a Golf Pride TaylorMade Victory Copper grip.

A look at TaylorMade’s new BRNR Mini Driver Copper with nostalgic cosmetics. (GolfWRX)

As with the original BRNR release from yesteryear, the new edition is made with split-weight technology, a multi-material head construction, a K-Sole design for improved turf interaction, a TwistFace for corrective ball flight, a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket for increased ball speeds and a 4-degree loft sleeve for minute changes to loft and face angle.

With the year’s first major at Augusta National coming up next week, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a Masters contestant or two put the new BRNR version into play to help navigate the long and demanding layout.

TaylorMade’s new BRNR Mini Driver Copper clubs will sell for $449.99 in 11.5 (RH/LH) and 13.5 (RH) degree options, and they will be available for custom orders.

Suzuki Jimny Reimagined As A Mini Gladiator Pickup Truck

If Suzuki were to bring this rendering to life, it could potentially become a popular choice in markets where trucks hold more appeal than SUVs

Suzuki Jimny Reimagined As A Mini Gladiator Pickup Truck

by Thanos Pappas

comments

The Suzuki Jimny is currently offered in three-door and five-door configurations, but what about a dual-cab pickup variant? Rendering artist Theophilus Chin has envisioned just that, creating a compelling Jimny-based truck model. This idea is to bring the rugged and boxy aesthetic of the Jeep Gladiator to a smaller and more budget-friendly segment.

As expected, the digital illustrations were based on the elongated five-door Suzuki Jimny. However, the wheelbase was further extended to allow the ladder-frame underpinnings to accommodate a properly sized rear bed.

More: Suzuki Jimny Turned Into An Awesome Little Turbocharged Truck

Additionally, the rear overhang is significantly longer compared to the donor car, adding more inches to its compact footprint. It’s worth noting that the five-door Jimny measures 3,985 mm (156.9 inches) long, making it shorter than many small hatchbacks.

The design of the rear bed takes cues from the larger Jeep Gladiator , evident in the pronounced taillights and the rear bumper with integrated steps. Similar to its inspiration, it features prominent Suzuki lettering on the tailgate. While the rest of the bodywork remains largely unchanged, the rear doors have been modified to no longer interfere with the wheel arches, thanks to the widened fender extensions.

Suzuki Jimny Reimagined As A Mini Gladiator Pickup Truck

Illustrations: Theottle

Since the debut of the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny in 2018, the little off-roader inspired several pickup conversions in the real and digital worlds , but none of them originated from the automaker. Still, if Suzuki was to launch a dual-cab pickup version of the Jimny, it would certainly need a stronger powertrain.

The currently available naturally aspirated 1.5-liter gasoline engine delivers 103 horsepower (77 kW / 105 PS) and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque. However, these figures may not be optimal for the payload and towing capacity requirements.

The Suzuki Jimny is set to undergo a mid-lifecycle update in 2024, which will coincide with the introduction of mild-hybrid and fully electric powertrain options, at least in Europe . Whether these updates will inject more power and charisma into the beloved 4×4 model remains to be seen.

Noah Kahan and Olivia Rodrigo

The morning of the Guts World Tour’s first night at Madison Square Garden, a perplexing, 4.8-level earthquake tore through New York City. Minutes later, the famed arena tweeted from its official account, “that was just the earth prepping for Olivia Rodrigo tonight.”

Olivia Rodrigo's Guts World Tour Setlist: All the Songs She Performed Opening Night

That was exactly right, as far as the 21-year-old pop star’s fans were concerned. More than 14,000 of them showed up in purple-hued, sequined droves to watch Rodrigo make her debut at one of the country’s biggest career milestone-marking venues Friday night (April 5), something that’s been a long time coming for the star since she found near-instant global success with Sour in 2021. (Not wanting to “skip steps,” as she told Billboard at the time, the singer stuck to smaller theaters for her first tour in ’22. Now, with a second chart-topping album under her belt thanks to last year’s Guts , Rodrigo is more than ready for not just one, but four sold-out shows at the Garden, the remaining three of which are slated for April 6, 8 and 9.)

Having previously briefly joined Billy Joel at one of his 2022 MSG shows to duet her own hit, “Deja Vu,” as well as “Uptown Girl,” Rodrigo was already a little bit acquainted with the grounds — plus, after being on the road for a month following her kickoff show in Palm Springs Feb. 23, her hour-and-a-half undertaking was already a well-oiled machine by the time she got to New York. Even so, the reigning princess of pop took the stage looking with genuine amazement as her crowd jumped, danced and screamed along to her opening number — “Bad Idea Right?” — making the entire arena pulse, this time without any help from shifting tectonic plates.

From a special guest performance (hello, Noah Kahan !) to a surprise mini High School Musical reunion, see the 8 best moments from the show that followed below.

Hello, Madison Square

Early on in her set, Rodrigo took a moment to acknowledge the magnitude of the night’s hallowed location, where most artists only ever dream of performing. “This is a very special night — my first night at Madison Square Garden,” she said breathlessly, brown eyes wide as they took in the sea of fans in front of her. “It’s incredible. I’m really excited. Tonight’s going to be so f–king fun.”

The artist’s return to New York — which she later asserted is the “greatest city in the world” — was made even more special by the fact that most of the show’s songs were written there , as she now lives in a Greenwich Village apartment. “I’m very, very grateful you’re here,” she added. “Thank you so much.”

WELCOME TO NIGHT 1 💜 #GUTSMSG pic.twitter.com/A3bweim4RI — MSG (@TheGarden) April 6, 2024

Girls Your Age Know Better

While singing her Billboard Hot 100 -topping Guts lead single “Vampire,” Rodrigo prompted the audience to sing — no, scream — the lyric, “Girls your age know better.”

With a crowd full of girls much younger than her in attendance, it was a small but profound way for the pop star to emphasize to them which suitors to steer clear of — hopefully saving many of the kiddos in homemade T-shirts and facepaint from falling into the same traps she did as they grow up.

The Breeders Get Their Flowers

Rodrigo’s premiere performance at Madison Square also marked The Breeders’ first show as Guts Tour openers. After their set, before accompanying herself on piano to sing “Teenage Dream,” the headliner made sure to give the ’90s rock figureheads their flowers.

“How incredible were The Breeders?” she said, smiling. “I’m such a huge fan. I remember my life in two distinct periods: before I heard ‘Cannonball’ and after I heard ‘Cannonball.’ I’m so honored to be playing this show with them.”

The Earthquake of It All

Of course, Rodrigo had to take a second to address the elephant in the room. While flying high over the heads of the crowd on her floating crescent moon set piece, on which she sings the Guts and Sour sister ballads “Logical” and “Enough for You,” the musician quipped, “All I’m thinking is I’m glad the earthquake didn’t happen when I was on this thing.”

A Mini 'High School Musical' Reunion

In between songs, Rodrigo took some time to interact with the crowd, at one point shouting out a group of elementary-age girls in matching purple dresses. “Look at those cuties! How sweet! I love little best friends.”

Then, while asking whether any of her fans had come to the show with their mothers, the former Disney star spotted her own TV mom: Michelle Noh, who played one of her character’s parents on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series . “Oh my goodness!” she chirped. “That’s crazy — speaking of moms — she played my mom on High School Musical ! I didn’t know you were here. Oh my god, that’s amazing. Wow, that is such a meta moment, we actually did not plan that.”

Noah Kahan Makes a Cameo

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the night came midway through the show, when Rodrigo brought out special guest Noah Kahan for a live duet that fans have been craving ever since the “Good 4 U” singer covered the New England native’s hit “Stick Season” on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in October.

“I’ve been looking forward to this all tour,” Rodrigo said before Kahan stepped out. “There’s this artist that I really love, and I found his music about a year ago and instantly became obsessed. He’s an incredible songwriter, an incredible singer.”

After sharing a hug, the two performers both played guitars as they traded lines of the “Stick Season” verses, their voices intertwining in harmony during the chorus. “Noah Kahan, everybody!” Rodrigo cheered as the folk singer exited the stage.

Happy Birthday, Moa

One of the best parts of Rodrigo’s show was her palpably strong friendships with her band, which is made up of all-female musicians. During a break between songs, she made sure that bassist Moa Munoz — who got her big moment playing the solo riffs to “Jealousy, Jealousy” at another point — got the birthday celebration she deserved by getting the whole arena onboard for a feel-good group sing-along to “Happy Birthday.”

Carrie Bradshaw AF

Rodrigo paid one last tribute to New York City by taking the stage for encore performances of “Good 4 U” and “Get Him Back!” in a tank top reading, “Carrie Bradshaw AF.”

As the Sex and the City leading lady might say: And just like that… Liv’s first-ever show at the Garden was in the books.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)
