Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. They do not cover winery tasting fees, though some of these fees may be waived with a minimum wine purchase. The tour covers a total of 12 to 17 miles, with an average 3 to 6 miles between stops. Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Heitz has been around since 1961 – yes, you read that correctly. Everything about Heitz speaks to tradition, from the vineyard selections to the woodblock-esque labels. It’s worth stocking up here and laying some down to age because Heitz is known to develop beautifully for years.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

Chateau Montelena

1429 Tubbs Lane, Calistoga

(707) 942-5105

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Napa History, VIP Service

Chateau Montelena is the perfect start to a day of winetasting. This gorgeous stone chateau is home to some legendary wines, including the Chardonnay that beat out white Burgundies in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Taste through their elegant line up of Cabs or go rogue and try their Riesling – everything is stunning.

Clos Pegase Winery

1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga

(707) 942-4981

Why Guests Love It: Sleek Architecture, Quirky Sculptures, Cave Tours

Clos Pegase breaks rank with modern architecture and the quirky “friendship bench” but the wines are no less delightful. With a range of flight options, guests are encouraged to taste through all that Napa has to offer in a relaxing, elegant environment. Be sure to try all of the reds.

Honig Vineyard & Winery

850 Rutherford Rd, Rutherford

(707) 963-4272

Why Guests Love It: Eco Tours, Sustainable Winery, Fabulous Whites

Honig means ‘honey’ in German, which is denoted with the whimsical bees on Honig labels. And, Honig is true to its love of bees by being certified sustainable and solar powered. Book the Eco tour to learn all about Honig’s green practices before tasting through some beautiful wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc.

8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford

(800) 686-6272

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Classic Sparkling Wine, Cheese Pairings

Is it bubbly time yet? Mumm Napa provides the best of French winemaking and Napa views. Guests can choose to taste through the delightful sparkling wines in a variety of settings, from patio seating to terrace tasting with cheese pairings.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Quirky Atmosphere, Estate Tours, Food & Wine Pairings

Stags’ Leap Winery

6150 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-5790

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Beautiful Views, Exceptional Service

Stags’ Leap is another legendary Napa winery and is a must for those wanting to taste through the best the valley has to offer. Indulge in a porch tasting to experience the stunning views alongside the stunning wines. And, be sure to grab a bottle of Petite Sirah, which is a perennial favorite among critics.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

The service was phenomenal.  I would say, 'It's like the French Laundry of tour companies.'

6 Best Winery Tours in Napa Valley

Going wine tasting is often so much more than sipping through a flight of wines. It’s about experiencing Wine Country in all of its glory and hearing the stories that make a region like Napa Valley so special. While we all love to belly up to the tasting bar at a winery, there’s something to be said for taking some time to learn about the history, property, and vineyards of the place that’s producing the wines in our glass. A well-executed winery tour before a wine tasting makes the wines in our glass that much more enjoyable.

Napa Valley is known for its gorgeous vineyards, stunning wineries, and, of course, exceptional wines. It’s hard to go wrong when wine tasting in this world-famous region just outside of San Francisco. However, some Napa wineries go above and beyond to bring to life the setting in which the wines are produced, so we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite wine tours in Napa Valley.

Walk Amongst The Vines

Cuvaison

Pine Ridge Vineyards

5901 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558, (800) 575-9777

Nestled in the heart of Napa Valley’s Stags Leap district, Pine Ridge sits beneath – you guessed it – a ridge of pines offering views of the palisades and dramatic terroir responsible for producing top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery’s estate vineyards in the best appellations throughout the region, including Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford, and Carneros. Pine Ridge also produces the unusual and much-loved Chenin Blanc + Viognier white blend sourced from grapes grown in the Sacramento Delta region of Clarksburg.

Deeply committed to sustainability, it’s no surprise that Pine Ridge has introduced an earth-centric Morning Hike Series to their wine tour experiences. Available during summer and harvest seasons, small groups are guided on a near-mile-long hike through the hillside vineyards, learning about Pine Ridge Vineyards’ sustainable farming techniques and diverse ecosystems. This grape-to-glass experience begins with some trail treats, as well as tastes of their Stags Leap District wines along with wines from other appellations. The hike finishes with a box lunch in their demonstration vineyard.

A Glimpse of Napa History

Charles Krug

Charles Krug

2800 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 967-2229

A visit to Napa Valley Wine Country wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the winery that started it all back in 1861. As the oldest winery in Napa, and the longest-running tasting room in California, Charles Krug offers a glimpse into the history of this world-famous wine region. Purchased in 1943 by Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, the iconic property remains family-owned today, producing elegant wines that uniquely express each estate vineyard in the family’s portfolio.

Guests will feel like family on the Charles Krug Tour and Tasting Experience as they explore the grounds of the winery, learning about two legendary pioneers of Napa Valley winemaking – Charles Krug and the Mondavi Family – and seeing the original home where Robert and Peter Mondavi, Sr. grew up.

Beauty Above & Below Ground

Quintessa

1601 Silverado Trail S, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 286-2730

Long considered one of the most iconic wineries in Napa Valley, this 280-acre property, founded by Agustin and Valeria Huneeus, sits in the heart of Rutherford, at the foot of the Vaca Mountain range. Using organic farming practices, the winery produces stunning wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère, all of which go into their flagship bottling in different proportions depending on the vintage.

Exclusivity is the vibe at Quintessa . The 90-minute Private Estate Experience offers a tour through the natural surroundings of Quintessa while learning about their holistic philosophy around organic farming practices. Following your tour, you will taste a flight of current and library vintages. For an even more elevated winery tour, opt for the Quintessential Experience that begins with a tour of the estate and culminates with a seated wine tasting in a private, open-air glass hilltop pavilion.

Behind-the-Scenes in Calistoga

Davis Estates

Davis Estates

4060 Silverado Trail N, Calistoga, CA 94515, (707) 942-0700

This family owned and operated Napa Valley winery sits in the heart of Calistoga, with vines also planted in Rutherford, Carneros, and Howell Mountain. Seeing the immense potential of the site, the Davis family purchased the century-old estate winery in 2011 and embarked on an ambitious restoration journey to turn it into the remarkable property it is today.

The VIP Experience is well worth the splurge. Dedicated wine enthusiasts will be wowed by this behind-the-scenes tour as they stroll through the vineyards and experience the awe-inspiring 11,000-square-foot cave system. The tasting lineup includes sips of highly coveted reserve wines as well as the exclusive Phase V wines by Philippe Melka, each paired with a selection of seasonal delicacies created by Executive Chef Mark Caldwell.

Tours range from $75–$99 and are 2–3 hours each and include a knowledgeable guide.  There are even tours for kids!

The Prisoner Wine Company

10.  The Prisoner Wine Company

Located just past Rutherford and before the town of St. Helena, The Prisoner has quickly built a loyal following for its dark and moody bottles and labels and bold and unconventional blends. Fans of the wine can book a $125 tour that takes them through the winery space, out to a small vineyard on the property and then to The Makery, a tasting space dedicated to the work of a variety of artists and craftspeople and their wares for a five-course food and wine experience.

Headed to Sonoma instead?

The 10 best Sonoma wineries

The 10 best Sonoma wineries

If Napa is Northern California’s land of wine-fueled luxury, with its chic wineries and tasting rooms, Sonoma is its laid back cousin: equally as beautiful with vineyards producing vintages just as world-class, but less crowded and somewhat more humble.

Grapeline -- Napa Valley's premier Wine Tour -- offers an insider's view of Napa Valley Wine Country's wineries. Get ready for a fun-filled day visiting a variety of wineries, each with a character as rich and individual as the wines they produce. Grapeline offers fun, carefree, hosted private tours throughout Napa Valley Wine Country.

Wine Tours by Grapeline in Paso Robles

Are you ready for Temecula’s first Kay Syrah Signature Series Event of 2024? I'm excited to present 'Bubbles, Brunch, & Bourbon,' an exquisite journey through Temecula's renowned wine country on Sunday, May 26, 2024, with Grapeline’s Chief Winos, John and Kim Kelliher. This tour will offer an unforgettable experience, combining the elegance of sparkling wines, the delight of a gourmet brunch, and the rich warmth of bourbon at Temecula's most beloved wineries.

Our adventure begins at Carter Estate Winery and Resort , a gem in the heart of Temecula. Here, you'll indulge in their meticulously crafted sparkling wines, produced using the true champagne method, Méthode Champenoise. Carter Estate's commitment to excellence makes it the perfect starting point for our day, setting a high standard with bubbles that dance on your palate.

Next, we'll visit Masia de la Vinya Winery , where the charm of Spanish influence meets the lush landscapes of Temecula. Prepare your taste buds for a culinary delight as brunch will be masterfully prepared by Savage Chef Dylan Soro. Known for his innovative and fearless approach to flavors, Chef Soro's creations promise to be a feast for the senses, perfectly paired with Masia's exquisite wines.

Our final stop takes us to Oak Mountain Winery , where we'll embrace the bold spirit of bourbon. In April 2024, Oak Mountain will begin offering distillery tours, and our visit will be among the first to experience their tour. Nestled within either their unique cave setting or speakeasy, this experience will provide a hearty conclusion to our day, surrounded by the expertise and passion that Oak Mountain pours into every bottle.

'Bubbles, Brunch, & Bourbon' is not just a wine tour; it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty, flavors, and hospitality that make Temecula Wine Country unforgettable. Join us for a day of exploration, enjoyment, and exquisite tastes. BOOK your spot now for a journey filled with the best that Temecula has to offer. Cheers to an experience that will linger in your memories and on your palate long after the day is done.

1,000+ Napa Wineries & Producers Personally Visited & Reviewed

Thank you for stopping by and for your interest in my Napa Valley wine tours!

I have *an extremely unique point of view into the Napa Valley from a winery perspective*, as I have personally visited, tasted with and written more than 1,090 commercial wine producers (wineries, physical or virtual) in Napa over the past 15+ years - CLICK HERE . As a result I have a plethora of resources to draw from in regards to customizing any tour to the Napa Valley.

All tours are private for your party.

A typical tour will last between 6-9 hours; the day is yours, tours can be shortened or increased as needed.

If you are a collector and are interested in purchasing wines for your cellar, I have contacts at some of Napa's most exclusive wineries. I can also setup exclusive & memorable food + wine experiences. Lets talk.

I can setup special tours based on a number of criteria. Want the wineries with the best tours, romance or views? I know these specific wineries and can make the appointments. Advance notice of at least a week is desirable for an appointment only winery tour and more during the busy summer months (especially weekends).

Our tours are relaxed and geared to your interests. Options besides wine tasting include sightseeing (Old Faithful Geyser, Petrified Forest, diRosa Art Preserve, etc) and hiking near Mt. St. Helena. We can also tour through some of Napa's towns including Calistoga and St. Helena.

I know the Napa Valley inside and out, numerous wine makers and tasting experiences that are genuine. I enjoy guiding and providing information about this incredible place. Have your own list of wineries? I would be happy to give you comments.

Any and all levels of wine education are perfectly fine.

Multi-day tours can be arranged..

want to bring wine country home with you?

turkey 1

We recommend the VinGardeValise  12 bottle wine suitcase . There are a couple ways you can use this suitcase. One is, when you come home you only pack half the suitcase with wine and the other side clothes; or, what we do is bring a duffle bag to carry our clothes home. You can still check a duffle bag home btw, you don’t have to schlep it around for all four connections.

Pro tip: you can also use the duffle bag to drop off your clothes to be laundered if you’re doing an extended trip. Multiple uses for one duffle bag.

napa valley vineyard tours

This is the Best Time to Visit Napa Valley (and The Worst!)

When is the best time to visit Napa Valley, the renowned wine region in California and home to hundreds of hillside vineyards?

Having lived in California for years and vanlifed through Napa on a 6 week West Coast trip, I spent some delightful days in Napa Valley during the peak of summer. Maybe it’s only slightly way too warm in the van, but at least one can pass out easily after many drinks in the vineyards and watching the winemaking process first-hand.

The climate in Napa Valley can range from mild winters to warm summers, with clear, sunny days and occasional rainfall. So, let’s break down the visitor seasons in Napa Valley:

  • Best Season:  March to June or August to October
  • Peak Season:  September and October
  • Off-Peak Season:  January to February

Now, let’s go into the specifics of these seasons, any must-experience events, and monthly weather trends. Whether you’re planning a day trip to Napa Valley or an extended stay, wine tasting at world-class wineries, or taking a hot air balloon ride, these are the best times to go to Napa Valley.

Best Time to Visit Napa Valley

Best time of year to visit.

Circle your calendar for March to June or early fall for the best time of year to visit this California wine country. Why? You’ll dodge the peak crowd madness and lap up some seriously gorgeous spring or fall weather. In the spring, you’ll still catch the vineyards in their lush, green state before the summer heat cranks up. And in the fall, you’ll make it in time to experience the grape harvest festivities.

Best Time for Good Weather

For the best weather in Napa Valley, aim for late spring to early summer, specifically May through June. Comfortable temperatures average in the 70s to low 80s, perfect for wine tours without breaking a sweat. Swirl your glass of wine under clear skies, mild weather, and just the right amount of sunshine.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds

To dodge the crowds, January through March is the least busy time to go. Fewer visitors means you’ll have a much better chance of getting those last-minute tasting spots, which you usually need to reserve way in advance during peak season. In general, it means more intimate wine tours, quieter restaurants, and potentially rubbing shoulders with just a handful of other wine lovers.

Cheapest Time to Visit

To snag the best deals in Napa Valley, aim for the winter months, specifically January and February. Napa is not known to be cheap, but this timeframe sees prices for accommodations and tours at their lowest, thanks to the off-peak visitation levels.

Worst Time to Visit Napa Valley

Honestly, if you’re looking for the least ideal time to visit Napa Valley, it’s got to be late November through December. Although it never gets too cold, it’ll be the rainy season, which could really put a damper on those vineyard tours and outdoor tastings. Plus, the chilliness, especially in the evenings, can be a bit of a buzzkill when all you want to do is explore the beautiful outdoors.

Seasons of Napa Valley

Spring (february – may).

Spring in Napa Valley is not too hot and not too cold, and the entire valley is waking up from winter. From February through May, the vibrant mustard fields and baby grapes start to peek out.

March kicks things off with a bit of a chill in the air, but by April, you’re slipping into those comfortable mid-60s F. By May, it’s perfect picnic weather in the low 70s. The skies are clear, the air is fresh, and the vineyards are absolutely Instagrammable with all those flowers blooming.

Wineries in spring are bustling with energy, prepping for the busy months ahead. This means if you’re curious about the winemaking process, it’s a fantastic time to grab a tour. The folks here love to share their passion, and with fewer crowds, you might just get that extra bit of attention and maybe learn a secret or two.

And here’s a pro tip from someone who’s been around California for a while: pack layers. Spring mornings and nights can be cool, but it can warm up quite a bit by the afternoon. Plus, many tastings and events are held outside, so you’ll be glad you brought that extra sweater or light jacket.

Key Events:

  • Napa Valley Mustard Celebration  (January – March) : Celebrate the blooming mustard fields in Napa Valley with this festival, featuring food, wine, and live music.
  • Napa Spring Half Marathon and 5K   (April): Run through the scenic Napa Valley during this half marathon event, followed by a wine tasting and live music.
  • Merryvale Spring Feast at the Profile Estate   (May): Enjoy a gourmet five-course meal with wine pairings at the Merryvale Profile Estate.
  • Annual Napa Valley Expo  (May): This fair is a celebration of spring and Napa’s agricultural heritage, featuring carnival rides, live music, and lots of food.

Summer (June – August)

Summer in Napa Valley? Hot. Temperatures can soar into the 90s F, which makes those air-conditioned wine cellars feel like heaven.

One word of advice? Hydrate. And I don’t just mean with Cabernet. The heat’s no joke, but it makes those chilled whites and sparkling wines taste like liquid gold. Early morning is your friend for vineyard tours or hikes. By midday, you’ll want to be sipping something cool, preferably with a view.

Crowds peak in summer, but don’t let that deter you. This is the peak season for a reason. The valleys are lush, the vineyards are in full swing, and night-time brings cooler temperatures perfect for outdoor concerts and moonlit dinners.

Summer also sees the release of many new vintages, meaning you’re getting the first taste of what’s to come. But with the crowds, you will want to book those tours and tastings well in advance.

  • BottleRock Napa Valley  (May – June) : This three-day music, food, and wine festival takes place in Napa Valley every year, featuring big names like Imagine Dragons and Neil Young.
  • Napa Porchfest  (July) : Enjoy free live music from local musicians on the porches and lawns of Napa’s historic neighborhoods.
  • Festival Napa Valley  (July) : This music and food festival features performances from world-renowned musicians paired with exquisite wine and cuisine.

Fall (September – November)

Fall in Napa is when the real connoisseurs come to drink. The temperature dips to that perfect sweater-weather zone, and the scenery is lit up with every shade of amber, ochre, and crimson.

But here’s why you should come in autumn – harvest season. This is when the grapes reach their peak and get harvested. Under the watchful eyes of artisans who’ve dedicated their lives to the craft, the grapes are picked, sorted, crushed, and pressed. And you can be there to see it all.

Many wineries offer special harvest tours and tastings, where you can taste the fresh juice straight from the barrel. Restaurants also offer special fall-themed menus featuring locally sourced produce and wines.

  • Napa Valley Film Festival  (October) : This five-day event celebrates the film industry, featuring screenings, culinary demonstrations, wine tastings and more.
  • Harvest Parties at Wineries:  (Full List  Here )

Winter (December – February)

Winter in Napa is when the crowds thin out. You’ll get the vineyard all to yourself and access to the best tables without reservations weeks in advance.

The weather, while cooler, particularly in the evenings, seldom freezes, staying in the mild 50s to 60s. Occasional rain showers freshen up the landscape, turning it vividly green.

Accommodation rates drop, making it the perfect time for budget-conscious travelers to enjoy luxury without the hefty price tag. Wineries tend to be less crowded for a more personal connection with the winemakers.

Holiday lights, festive decorations, and events like the Yountville Festival of Lights make the entire town twinkle under the night sky.

  • Napa Lighted Art Festival  (December-January) : This free, open-air festival features stunning lighted art installations throughout the town of Napa.
  • Napa Valley Truffle Festival  (January) : Celebrate the prized black truffle with this annual festival, featuring truffle cultivation demos, wine tastings, and a decadent Truffles & Wine Dinner.
  • Restaurant Week   (January) : Enjoy special lunch and dinner menus at discounted prices from some of the best restaurants in Napa Valley during this week-long event.

A growing number of Napa winemakers are confused and frustrated at county officials who won’t let them do business—even when they follow the rules

  • Aaron Romano

It may be hard to imagine, considering Napa's moniker as the preeminent luxury wine region in the United States, but it wasn't that long ago that the valley was a small agricultural area populated with bootstrapping farmers.

Today, the valley is renowned for its premium wines and grand estates. Four million tourists visit annually . While many visit the gleaming tasting rooms and cellars of corporate-owned wine brands, plenty of small family wineries still make up the fabric of the valley. In 2015, 68 percent of Napa wineries produced fewer than 20,000 cases per year.

But there is a growing concern that the county is not supporting its biggest economic draw, especially when it comes to small wineries. In 1968, vintners and local officials teamed up to create the Napa Agriculture Preserve , the first preserve of its kind in the nation. The idea was that the best way to protect the land from excess development was to zone it for farming. But a growing number of Napa residents don’t see grapegrowing as the best way to protect the land and wineries. Some Napa residents complain that wineries have become more like tourist attractions and event spaces than small farms. The county already has some of the country’s most complex rules for gaining approval, and local groups are increasingly fighting those approvals.

Multiple parties have filed lawsuits over use permits and water rights. Many small winery owners are grumbling of grievances with the county government, including approvals for new construction and wastewater treatment upgrades. There’s also a federal investigation over possible corruption in the permitting process.

Some worry that this will only make the Valley less attractive to small wineries. “The county's approach will further stratify the market in favor of larger entities and push smaller wineries out of business," said Hoopes Vineyard owner Lindsay Hoopes, who has become an unexpected poster child for the simmering frustrations within the valley.

After Napa County officials slapped Hoopes with citations for allegedly conducting tastings without a proper permit, they filed a lawsuit against her in 2022. Hoopes, adamant that she was within her rights, has filed a countersuit, claiming officials abused their regulatory power.

Hayes Drumwright , founder of Vida Valiente and Memento Mori wineries, has been in a five-year battle with the county over building a winery home for Vida Valiente in rural St. Helena. Drumwright says he’s fulfilled all the required criteria, abided by all the rules and passed every necessary environmental survey, traffic study and more. He's even received a thumbs-up from a public works official and fire marshal. Yet in a December 2023 hearing, he was still not approved to begin construction. "I know other wineries are going through the same thing," said Drumwright. “Save me my time and money if following these rules doesn't matter.”

Not far from where Drumwright aims to build, Jayson Woodbridge , founder and owner of Hundred Acre Wine Group , is also taking action against the county. Woodbridge has filed two lawsuits against the county over officials denying him permits for wells and to replant trees burned down in 2020 wildfires.

These are just a few examples of battles being fought in the public eye. Behind the scenes, the FBI has subpoenaed records from several wineries; environmental groups claim there’s evidence that local officials improperly approved certain projects.

“Some individuals voice frustration over what they perceive as an excessive number of wineries and a lack of regulations, while others contend that there are already too many regulations in place," said Brian Bordona, Napa County's director of Planning, Building and Environmental Services.

"There's a rising tide of anger," said Woodbridge. “I’m suing because I've watched so many people try to get things done—people who don't have a lot of money and have a dream but just get crushed by the county. I have the ability and wherewithal to stand up to the county. I'm in this fight for all of us and for the future of Napa Valley."

To Sell Wine in Napa, You Need a Tasting Room

In 1990, Napa County’s government enacted the Winery Definition Ordinance (WDO) to legally outline parameters for winery operations, including production, sales and marketing. New wineries were required to obtain a use permit before opening; existing wineries were grandfathered in but needed to obtain a permit if they expanded.

Small wineries, defined as those producing less than 8,500 cases annually, were exempted from obtaining a formal use permit, provided they adhered to rules in a certificate of exemption.

Lindsay Hoopes’ father began farming in Oakville in 1981. After taking over the family business in 2012, Lindsey started looking for a new home for the small winery and acquired the Hopper Creek Vineyard and Winery in Yountville in 2017. Like Hoopes, Hopper Creek had hosted visitors for decades thanks to their small winery exemption, and Hoopes believed that by taking over the location, she was entitled to continue doing so.

But Napa County's records indicate that Hopper Creek was never permitted to host tastings: The facility’s certificate prohibits "public tastings.” Hoopes contends that she and her team exclusively provide private tastings by appointment.

The county did not agree and issued notices to Hoopes for hosting tastings and other infractions, including hanging decorative lights, conducting yoga classes on-site and selling nonwine products. In 2022, the county filed a lawsuit.

Hoopes says the county is taking advantage of a lapse in time. “There are small wineries [like ours] that were vested with rights in the 1980s," says Hoopes. "In order to sell wine, you have to get lips to glasses.” She has filed a countersuit against the county.

The county typically refrains from commenting on potential or ongoing litigation, but court filings show that officials believe Hoopes' distinction of what "public tastings" are is a loose interpretation. Hoopes also has an O-2 license, in which the state alcohol authorities allow for a tasting room. State law prohibits local governments from eliminating such rights.

Hoopes, a former assistant district attorney in San Francisco, has an advantage in court. Still, she recognizes that other small wineries likely won't have the money or legal resources to defend themselves.

For Hoopes, her lawsuit goes beyond her need to survive as a small business. "This case isn't about me. It's about the precedent this will set." A civil trial began Jan. 29 in a Napa County Superior Court. A ruling is pending.

Napa Winemakers Are Following County Rules but Still Being Denied Permits

Vintners are adapting to a changing climate, which has meant a higher risk of wildfires. The devastating blazes of 2020 , which ripped through Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Lake and Yolo counties, prompted a shift in mindset about development, particularly in rural areas. In the past, wineries and their accompanying vineyards were seen as a plus in the face of fires, since vines tend to slow the flames’ advance. However, authorities have made development very challenging in recent years.

For his Vida Valiente wines, Hayes Drumwright has proposed a winery and tasting room on rural St. Helena’s Crystal Springs Road. In December 2023, after five years of working through all the necessary measures to get approval to build, he had checked all the boxes required by the county. But the Napa County Planning Commission voted against Drumwright’s project.

“We’re trying to abide by every rule. We did traffic and water studies we didn’t need because we wanted everything buttoned up,” said Drumwright. He noted that two commissioners opposed the winery because of its location along a rural road in a wildfire-prone area; Crystal Springs Road is not far from where the 2020 Glass Fire originated. Yet the public works agency and fire marshal approved the project.

“I’ve got five years and a million dollars baked into this,” said Drumwright. “So, I called all the county commissioners and asked them to visit the property. Two did. But one commissioner, Kara Brunzell, didn’t return any emails or phone calls. I tried four times to get ahold of her.” (All Wine Spectator requests for comment from Napa officials were forwarded to Bordona.)

Drumwright said that when it came time to present his case, several neighbors claimed that two cars couldn’t pass each other on the road near where Drumwright aimed to build. “But we’ve spent thousands on traffic surveys!” he lamented. Drumwright said in the end, Brunzell claimed she was uncomfortable with the project, citing too much traffic and potential water usage. Another commissioner, Megan Dameron, cited a letter from a Crystal Springs Road resident that claimed an inability for cars to pass and concerns about safety.

“The head commissioner stopped the hearing,” recalled Drumwright, “And he said, ‘I can’t believe this is happening. We need to trust the experts. If the rules don’t matter, then what are we doing?’”

Napa Winemakers Don’t Have Control over Their Land

Drumwright also highlights that as part of county ordinance, properties have had to reduce fire loads, including removing dead and dying trees and shrubs and creating defensible spaces around structures. Simultaneously, the county has an ordinance for new development stipulating that for however much forest a new winery would displace, the owner must plant three or four times as many new trees.

That rule is why Jayson Woodbridge is suing the county. Officials demanded that Woodbridge replant trees on his Napa Valley property, where 80 hillside acres burned during the 2020 fires. After clearing burned and dead trees from his property, Woodbridge intended to plant an experimental, dry-farmed vineyard using innovative non-erosive techniques. But in 2022 he received a citation for a potential violation of Napa County code. Court documents reveal the county issued a Stop Work Order, which Woodbridge claims he never received.

Woodbridge contends he was well within his rights to plant on the land. “We have every right to clean up the land after an apocalypse like the Glass Fire, and we shouldn’t have to be told by the county what we do with our private land,” he said. He also filed suit against the county after officials refused to issue permits for water wells on several of his vineyard properties. Woodbridge’s lawsuit alleges that the county disregards state water rights, which he is entitled to.

In California, water rights are administered by the State Water Resources Control Board, not local governments. However, within Napa, the county regulates wells through county code to ensure groundwater is not contaminated or polluted.

Under state and county laws, well permits should be granted as a matter of course and without excessive and discriminatory restrictions on water use. However, usage was among the county’s reasons for denying Woodbridge’s well permit. The county required Woodbridge to agree to strict usage limitations imposed on existing wells.

“Agriculture and vineyards require water, and landowners have a vested interest in using our water wisely,” said Woodbridge, citing gross regulatory overreach. “We have every right to efficiently use water under our rights that are vested with the properties we own or purchase.”

An FBI Investigation into the Napa Permit Process?

The battle over development has taken a darker turn. The FBI subpoenaed records in December from numerous vintners and the Napa County Farm Bureau, an advocate for wineries. That same month, the FBI raided the home of Alfredo Pedroza, a member of the County Board of Supervisors. Pedroza is a vocal advocate for wineries and has been a target of environmental groups opposed to winery expansion.

Leaks to local media identified several prominent names among the subpoenaed vintners, including Dave Phinney, Chuck Wagner and Kathryn Walt Hall. She and her husband, Craig Hall, were involved in perhaps the most tumultuous among recent development battles. They purchased Walt Ranch , undeveloped land on Atlas Peak, for $8 million in 2005, with plans for a 208-acre vineyard. Environmental groups opposed the project, but after a decade of wrangling and alterations to the plans , it was approved by the county board in 2021.

A year later, though, opponents accused Pedroza of a conflict of interest because his father-in-law had purchased land next to Walt Ranch with a loan backed by Pedroza. Tired of the battles, the Halls canceled the project.

The FBI and local U.S. Attorney have refused to comment on the subpoenas.

Will Things Get Better for Napa Wineries?

Carlton McCoy, president and CEO of Lawrence Wine Estates , which includes six Napa wineries, does not have any ongoing disputes with the county. But he understands the arguments from his peers and other residents and perceives a disconnect and a lack of mutual understanding. "We need to create a platform to solve issues and not play the blame game," said McCoy.

He also asks why members of the public get to file objections even after a winery has met county regulations. "When building a winery, approval goes to public opinion. Why is that a thing? You can't run a wine region that way. Not to discount homeowners, but that's what you bought into, and the county has disproportionally allowed them to dictate things, which is counterintuitive to the agricultural preserve."

Bordona says the county encourages open and constructive dialogue. "This may include engaging in discussions to review existing regulations, assess the impact of new wineries and explore potential solutions that align with the interests of our residents, businesses and the county as a whole.”

Several winemakers said they believe there's an emerging narrative that wineries aren't considered agricultural and thus are being held to a different standard than other businesses, including vineyards. "There's a rising tide of people that think agricultural preservation is antithetical to winery operations," said Hoopes. "But the Ag Preserve founders knew they were inextricably linked. They have to work hand in hand, because what is land if you can't monetize it? It's all tied to the value of the wine industry, which is tied to what the market needs, not just growing grapes. It's making wine and hospitality."

Part of what upsets Drumwright is the idea that his vision for Napa doesn’t matter to local officials. “I’ve had a brand here since 2010, and I also care who comes into the valley. Visiting small wineries and seeing that Napa hasn't gone corporate is important," he said. "If we're going to get on a course that who builds these brands doesn't matter, can the magic of Napa hold for the next generations?"

Named for forests of towering oaks that have mostly been replaced by vineyards, Napa Valley’s Oakville—both a town and an AVA—is home to some of the world’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon . One of its most high-profile vineyards is To Kalon , which means “the highest beauty” in Greek. Originally owned and planted by Napa pioneer H.W. Crabb, it is now farmed by a variety of owners including Robert Mondavi winery’s parent company Constellation Brands, University of California Davis, and Beckstoffer Vineyards, which sells its prized fruit to several wineries. Producing some of the most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, Oakville has come a long way since its origins as a water stop for steam trains in the 1860s.

Two miles wide, Oakville was granted American Viticultural Area status in 1993. More than 70 vintners and growers cultivate grapes on its 5,000 acres of vines, which produce some of the foremost Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends in existence. California’s first “vineyard designate” wine, Heitz Cellars 1966 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, is from Oakville, and the first perfect score for a wine from California was awarded to another product of Oakville, Groth Vineyards & Winery 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.

Elevations rise to 1,000 feet in the Vaca Range on the east side of the AVA, where grapes receive sun late in the day, while afternoon shade is one of the benefits to vineyards planted in the Mayacamas Mountains on the west side, which ascend to a less extreme 500 feet. Meanwhile, at the flat center of the region, valley floor fruit is the recipient of generous sunlight and a steady cycle of morning fog and cool breezes from San Pablo Bay and constant flow of warmer air from San Joaquin Valley to the east. A vast array of flavor and tannin profiles for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc grown here is derived from widely differing soils including alluvial, sedimentary, and volcanic. Here are some of the finest wines from Napa Valley’s true center, Oakville.

Sober Travelers Find Something to Savor in Wine Country

Mocktail trails, olive oil tours and elevated dining experiences are among the many ways the renowned wine-producing areas of Sonoma, Mendoza and Tuscany are appealing to sober or sober-curious travelers.

A green, brown and yellow illustration of a woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and biking through a wine vineyard.

By Christine Chitnis

Amy Snook knows more about wine than your average traveler. Originally from California, she now lives in the Douro Valley of Portugal, her partner works in the wine industry, and she has visited 47 countries, many of which have celebrated viticulture. But seven years ago, on a trip to Mendoza, a winemaking region in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountains, she opted to abstain from drinking alcohol, a decision she would repeat in future travels.

“It’s such a long flight to Argentina, and I was only there for 10 days,” said Ms. Snook, 34, a publishing professional. “I’m aware of how alcohol affects me, and I chose to prioritize feeling amazing every day of the trip over dealing with a hangover.”

During her visit, Ms. Snook bicycled between vineyards, reveled in breathtaking scenery, relaxed with spa treatments and engaged with sommeliers and winemakers, coming away with a new appreciation for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

“The obvious question when you tell someone that you aren’t drinking is, ‘Out of all the places you could go, why travel to wine country?’” she said. “But to me, it makes perfect sense because these regions offer all the perks of luxury travel — wellness amenities, beautiful landscapes and fine dining.”

With 41 percent of Americans seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, according to a consumer-sentiment study released in January by NCSolutions, Ms. Snook’s experience is part of a larger trend: the rise of sober-curious or mindful drinking. While sober travel is hardly a new concept, its popularity is surging to new heights — particularly among younger generations — and forcing a reckoning in the wine industry. The 2024 State of the U.S. Wine Industry report , an annual forecast of market conditions and trends written by the wine-business analyst Rob McMillan, found that 52 percent of consumers ages 21 to 34 believe that consuming alcohol, even in moderation, is bad for your health.

This trend is reshaping travel to world-class wine destinations like Sonoma County, in California, as well as Mendoza and Tuscany. Blessed with temperate climates, extended growing seasons, fertile soils, rich histories and breathtaking vistas, these renowned wine locales are expanding their offerings to attract drinkers and nondrinkers.

Here are some of the restaurants, tour groups and wineries in those regions that are reinventing the travel experience to be more inclusive of the sober-curious.

Dining in Sonoma

If wine is a true expression of the land, embodying the unique characteristics of its soil, weather and the meticulous craftsmanship of those who cultivate it, can you still forge that connection without drinking?

At Cyrus , a Michelin-starred fine dining destination in Geyserville , Calif., the answer is a resounding yes. Sonoma County, double the size of neighboring Napa, made conscious decisions to protect and diversify its land use, ensuring grapes as well as agricultural crops were grown. Douglas Keane, Cyrus’s owner and chef, highlights the local harvest by working with small farms and purveyors to source his ingredients. Crosnes — a Chinese artichoke — from Alexander Valley Vineyards gardens, yuzu and finger limes from the citrus grower David Levine, and cheesefrom Andante Dairy have all ended up on Cyrus’s menu.

Also on the menu: Kally , an alcohol-free wine alternative produced with housemade organic verjuice and sourced from Northern California. Served at more than 15 other Michelin-starred restaurants, Kally’s bottles include Early Chardonnay, which is crisp, bright and changes flavor and aroma as it moves across the palate, similar to a fine wine. A tart, vibrant Golden Sparkler has notes of jasmine and citrus, and a floral, fruity Rosé Sparkler offers hints of strawberry and hibiscus.

“Chefs and sommeliers are interested in having precise nonalcoholic pairings. Their food was created to be prepared with sophisticated drinks, not just sparkling water,” said Scott Mitic, who created the beverage along with his wife, Katie.

Customers, too, appreciate having a choice, he said, noting that many of Kally’s most loyal drinkers are wine enthusiasts. “This is not an abstinence movement; it is a moderation movement.”

Cyrus Schultz, the wine director and sommelier at Cyrus, aims to create drinks that make sober guests feel just as special, if not more, than those indulging in traditional wine pairings. His nonalcoholic creations include the Rosé Champagne, an effervescent blend of coconut, white sesame, cherry blossom and lime, and the Apple Martini, a sweet, herbaceous concoction of pink lady apple, fennel and mint olive oil.

“The intention is never to mimic alcohol products, but to construct the pairings similarly to how a chef looks at a menu — different textures, temperatures and flavor profiles,” Mr. Schultz said.

These efforts are not limited to one restaurant. Chris Vomvolakis, senior manager of consumer public relations at Sonoma County Tourism , said bars, restaurants and wineries across the region are recognizing that it’s not all about wine.

The town of Healdsburg recently created the Mocktail Trail , with eight participating restaurants, and Meadowcroft Wines in the town of Sonoma curated a flight of original zero-proof cocktails. David Messerli, Meadowcroft’s marketing and strategy director, said the winery encourages guests “to discern aromas, flavors and nuances, much like they would with wine.”

“For those opting out of alcohol, we felt there was more we could do,” he said. “People have various reasons for abstaining from alcohol, and no one should feel excluded because of it.”

Women-led luxury in Mendoza

Mendoza, renowned for its malbec wines and stunning Andean landscapes, is no stranger to luxury accouterments, but sober guests? That is a newer phenomenon. “We have definitely noticed an increase in guests seeking nonalcoholic travel options in recent years,” said Victoria Stiles, sales manager at Cavas Wine Lodge , a luxury 18-room hotel set amid a 55-acre vineyard.

At Cavas, wine may be the main attraction, but guests can book spa treatments using vine and grape-seed extracts, join yoga sessions on the private terrace overlooking the Andes and vineyards, and take full-day hiking excursions to Aconcagua Provincial Park, a rugged, mountainous destination that is home to Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Wild Terrains , a certified B-Corp travel company specializing in experiences for women, has planned three days of a 10-day Argentina tour to be sober-inclusive in Mendoza. Built around women-owned businesses, stops include boutique lodging at Entre Cielos , horseback riding in the Andean foothills, home-cooked asado at Estancia Los Chulengos and a private dining experience at Michelin-starred Zonda Cocina de Paisaje . The meal offers special mocktail pairings with distinct flavors like lemon verbena, beets and burro, an herb used to make digestive teas and infusions.

“In Mendoza, our trip centers on talented female winemakers who are pushing boundaries in a historically male-dominated industry,” said Lauren Bates, founder of Wild Terrains. “While these experiences include wine tastings, we want sober travelers to feel intentionally included even if they are skipping the wine tasting.”

Sofia Pescarmona, owner of the Bodega Lagarde vineyard and Zonda Cocina de Paisaje, said that while the restaurant experience aims to showcase their wine, nondrinkers will also appreciate it.

“We truly believe we can offer an elevated experience for those who don’t drink wine by highlighting other seasonal produce grown on our property,” she said.

Tasting olive oil in Tuscany

Wine tastings epitomize indulgence, especially immersed in the heart of Tuscany, when visitors can savor glass after glass of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., chief executive of the Il Borro wine estate and grandson of the fashion house’s founder, encourages guests to find other ways to indulge.

“The olive harvests in the autumn produce the region’s spicy, piquant ‘green gold,’” said Mr. Ferragamo.

Il Borro, in Tuscany’s Valdarno, is a meticulously restored medieval village that includes 58 suites, three vacation villas, two restaurants, stables, working vineyards and olive groves. Olive oil production began in 1996, following the recovery of varieties like Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino that had long been neglected. Now, after touring some 80 acres of organic groves, guests can engage in a tasting experience of two distinct oils, one full-bodied with floral, fruity and grassy aromas, the other robust, peppery and dark.

Another option, Tuscan Organic Tours , offers immersive daylong experiences that delve into wine and oil but also other rich agricultural offerings. Delicious tours with private transportation highlight tastes and flavors that include Pecorino di Pienza, one of the most renowned Italian cheeses, saffron and fresh pastas. The tours include visits to organic farms, lunches, tastings, and opportunities to participate in cheese-making and saffron harvesting.

Picking wine that compliments the unique flavor of barbecue food can be tricky. Here are some wines that pair nicely with barbecue foods.

Chef Mark Dommen of One Market Restaurant, competing for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, accepts a check for the charity at the Cabernet Cookoff in 2023. This year's fundraiser will be held April 13.

HALL Napa Valley hosts the Cabernet Cookoff fundraiser on Saturday, April 13 at HALL St. Helena. The annual event, presented by The Coeur Foundation, will feature a lineup of renowned culinary teams vying for a chance to win proceeds for a charity of their choice by participating in a food and wine pairing competition, according to a news release.

Ticket proceeds benefit nonprofit organizations as selected by the winning chef teams.

“Being the title sponsor for this event brings me so much joy,” says vintner Kathryn Hall. “Bringing together foodies and wine lovers — like myself — by way of a competitive food and wine pairing competition helps expand our commitment to supporting the community and its many diverse organizations. And boy, does it turn into a competition!”

Chef teams are tasked with creating a small dish that pairs best with HALL Jack’s Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2024 Cabernet Cookoff also coincides with the public release of the 2021 vintage of the Jack’s Masterpiece wine. Guests in attendance will sample 14 different dishes and sip on the featured wine while voting for the People’s Choice winners.

Engineering Extravaganza wine event to support Calistoga students

A group of advocates for students studying engineering at Calistoga Junior Senior High School have planned an elegant afternoon among the vines to help fund a school trip to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the Lemelson-MIT EurekaFest in June, according to a recent news release.

The Engineering Extravaganza event will be held from Sunday, May 5, at Benessere Vineyards in St. Helena from 1-4 p.m. and will feature fine wine and food, margaritas, live entertainment and a silent auction.

“I am so proud of our young inventors and their accomplishments in the Lemelson-MIT program,” said Matt Reid, a trustee of the Calistoga Joint Unified School District, and general manager and winemaker at Benessere Vineyards, in the news release. “I am honored for Benessere to host a fundraising event to help get our students to MIT.”

Tickets at $150 each ($100 with an early bird discount before April 28) include food and beverages and may be purchased online via EventBrite at https://bit.ly/49VJUPE .

Among many auction lots, guests will have the opportunity to bid on a bird’s eye view of Napa Valley aboard a private plane, and a private winery dinner for eight helmed by Solage Resort’s SolBar Chef Gustavo Rios. Wine lovers will have access to bid on a tour and tasting at Larkmead Vineyards complete with a 1.5L magnum, a 3L of Orin Swift signed by Dave Phinney and a 1.5L magnum from Pride Mountain Vineyards. A Thomas Keller Restaurant Group package will feature $200 gift cards to both Bouchon and Ad Hoc + Addendum, plus a cookbook personally signed by Chef Thomas Keller.

Students have set out to raise $100,000 to fly all 32 program students and their chaperones to present their inventions at MIT. An additional $100,000 goal has been set to fund further STEM projects at Calistoga Junior Senior High School.

CJSHS was selected as one out of only eight schools in the nation to receive the InvenTeam grant, and one of three to receive an ingenuity class curriculum from the Lemelson-MIT Foundation. Calistoga is the only high school in the country to have been selected for both prestigious programs.

Black winemaker pioneer Bates dies

Ernest A. Bates

Dr. Ernest A. Bates, Jr., philanthropist and founder of Black Coyote Chateau and the African American Vintners, died at his home in Napa on March 19, according to a news release.

Bates was born Dec. 7,1936 and raised in Peekskill, New York. In 1954, Bates was one of just a very few Black students entering Johns Hopkins University, where he pursued his bachelor's degree in biology on a full academic scholarship.

In addition to his academic studies, Bates was a prominent member of the football and track teams. After graduating from Johns Hopkins, he was presented with an option to play professional football for the Baltimore Colts or attend medical school, but his mother knew being a doctor was more promising in the long term than playing football. He received a full scholarship from the University of Rochester where he chose to attend medical school.

In 1962, Bates earned his medical degree at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, and in 1963 completed an internship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center.

He then joined the Air Force and served in Japan for three years. Following his military service, Bates completed his neurosurgery residency in 1971 at the University of California, San Francisco, becoming one of the first three Black board-certified neurosurgeons in the United States. He continued his neurosurgical medical practice in San Francisco until 2000, when he moved to Napa full time.

In 1977, Bates founded American Shared Hospital Services (ASHS) and became one of the first African Americans to take a company public.

He established the Ernest Bates Foundation in 2004 to support nonprofit health care organizations serving African American and Latino communities, a cause close to his heart.

In 1998, he founded Bates Creek Vineyards in Napa Valley and later re-branded the label under Black Coyote Chateau with his original partners and friends Jack Ruffle and Stan Trotman, making Bates one of the first Black vintners in the country. Bates was one of the founding members of the African American Vintners Association.

Additionally, he served on the board of Copia, the American Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts and as a patron of the Arts, he served on the San Francisco Ballet's Board of Trustees.

Bates is survived by his wife, Kathryn Ann McMorrow Bates of Napa, his first wife Aiko Bates, sons Ernest R. Bates and Paul S. Bates, grandchildren Ernest, Alexander, and Helena Bates and his daughter-in-law Marlene Pelage Bates.

Winemaker Aaron Pott kicked off the live auction of wine futures at the CIA Greystone in 2019. Pott is joining  Pestoni Family Estate Winery as consulting winemaker.

Pott and Moore join Pestoni team

Pestoni Family Estate Winery welcomes a new winemaking team with Aaron Pott as consulting winemaker and Jeremiah Moore as winemaker, according to a recent news release.

Beginning with the 2024 vintage, Pott and Moore will direct the winemaking for Pestoni Family Estate Winery, working closely with the family’s fifth generation and consulting director of viticulture, Matteo Abreu, and longtime cellar master Manuel Avina.

The family’s fourth generation winemaker, Andy Pestoni, will retire after making the wine for 20 years, and remains connected to the family brand serving on the board of directors.

“Already having a great rapport with one another, Aaron and Jeremiah’s enthusiasm for winemaking and working with our estate vineyards in Rutherford, Howell Mountain and Lake County, coupled with their talent and appreciation for Napa Valley, is a tremendous asset for us,” said Greg Pestoni, Pestoni Family Estate Winery general manager, in the news release.

“Having lived and worked in Napa Valley and abroad for a long time,” said Pott, “Pestoni Family Estate Winery possesses what I love most about wine country — that ‘old-school’ Napa vibe — which has always resonated with me and is rare today. I’m most excited to play a role in preserving one of the few, multi-generational family-owned and operated wine projects, with more than a century of history in Napa Valley.”

Pott, who is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated and respected winemakers, brings more than 30 years of winemaking experience to Pestoni Family Estate Winery. Following graduation from the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology, Pott began his winemaking career at Newton Vineyard in 1990. He moved to France to be the winemaker for Château Troplong-Mondot, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, and after a year, he spent the next five years as the director at Château La Tour Figeac while earning a degree in Viticulture from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France. When Pott returned to the U.S., he was appointed head winemaker for Beringer Wine Estates’ international brands, followed by a dual role as winemaker and general manager for Quintessa Estate.

He was recognized as Food & Wine magazine’s “Winemaker of the Year” in 2012. Today, Pott consults with a limited number of boutique Napa Valley producers including Blackbird Vineyards, Seven Stones Winery, Greer Wines, Perliss Vineyards, St. Helena Winery and Fe Vineyards, in addition to making wine for his own label, Pott Wine, created with his wife Claire in 2007 from their Mount Veeder property.

“Joining the Pestoni Family Estate Winery as winemaker is an incredible reunion with my friend and mentor Aaron Pott,” said Moore. “It’s also an exciting opportunity to help the Pestoni family realize the full potential of their vineyards by crafting wines that are a pure expression of their sites and showcasing the quality of their farming.”

Moore, a graduate of UC Santa Barbara, began his winemaking career at Sterling Vineyards in 2004 as an intern. During his 13-year tenure with Sterling Vineyards, Moore worked his way up to the position of laboratory manager, supervising the winery’s compliance, Napa Green certification, blending trials, bottling and annual harvest internship program. In 2017, Moore jumped into the cellar as the enologist at Blackbird Vineyards. There, he met and worked alongside Pott, who appointed him the winemaker for Blackbird’s custom crush clients and eventually winemaker of Blackbird Vineyards in 2022.

“Having made wine all over Napa Valley, I’m looking forward to working with Pestoni’s Howell Mountain vineyards, which offer some of the best Napa Valley terroir, in addition to working with Jeremiah again, and Matteo, who is, and reins from, arguably one of the best viticulturists in the world,” said Pott.

Founded in 1892, Pestoni Family Estate Winery has grown and produced single-vineyard wines from Napa Valley vineyards in Rutherford, Howell Mountain and Lake County. For five generations the Pestoni family has been dedicated to highlighting the regional expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc and proprietary reds from its estate vineyards.

The winery, adjacent to the Pestoni Ranch vineyard in Rutherford, features beautiful gardens, picnic grounds and opportunities for in-depth private tastings. For more information about Pestoni Family Estate Winery, visit pestonifamily.com .
