Noel Gallagher (born 29 May 1967) is an English Rock and Pop singer, songwriter and musician from Manchester. Gallagher is most known for his time with the band Oasis, and his own project, Noel Gallagher’s Flying Birds.

Gallagher grew up in the north of England, his difficult upbringing led to him leading a reclusive and sometimes criminal life as a teenager. His passion for music roots back to him watching The Smiths on Top of the Pops and being inspired by guitarist Johnny Marr.

After an early career in construction and as a roadie, he requested to join his brother Liam’s band “The Rain” in 1991, after being unimpressed with their shows. Noel took over as the sole songwriter of the band, and after playing a talent scouted show in Glasgow, they were signed to Sony America on a six-album deal.

The band released their debut album, “Definitely Maybe” to critical acclaim and commercial success, with the LP debuting at number one, and becoming the fastest selling British debut at it’s time of release. During their following US tour, the Gallagher’s had one of many bust ups to come, and Noel left the band for a brief while, citing poor touring conditions and the lack of positive response from US audiences.

However by the following year, Oasis, and the Gallaghers were back, with a number one single “Some Might Say” and a number one album (“What's the Story) Morning Glory?”. During this point, Noel and the rest of the band were at the height of their fame, with a hype surrounding them, rival band Blur, and the Britpop Scene. Gallagher became known for living up to his rock’n’roll lifestyle, drinking and partying with celebrity friends such as Kate Moss and Ian Brown.

Over the next 10 years or so, Oasis released a further five albums, played around the world at festivals and sold out arenas. But in the end, Noel and Liam’s fighting led to the band splitting up in 2008. Noel went on to work on his solo project, releasing an eponymous album with his band Noel Gallagher’s Flying Birds in 2011. Gallagher is an avid Manchester City fan, and can often be found at their home games.

Live reviews

Are there any two members of formerly world dominating bands who have more vastly differing relationships with their material – old and new – than the eternally warring brothers Liam and Noel Gallager? Where the former and his band Beady Eye continue with their series of diminishing returns and seem to only play Oasis classics through gritted teeth, the latter seems to be far more at peace with his place in the history of British rock’s past, and his role in its future. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are a band as slick as any huge rock act one could come across, but also one making relevant music, so much so that comparatively fresh faced tunes like ‘AKA What A Life!’ generate a comparably large swell of emotion in an audience when played live as songs his crowd will have known since they were similarly short in the tooth themselves. What is Gallagher the elder’s real skill as a solo artist however is his ability to inject new life in to said old dogs, with both startlingly vibrant renditions of ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ and slight melodic tweakings of tunes like the otherwise vastly overplayed ‘Wonderwall’ having them sound just as full of life as they ever did when played under the banner of Oasis.

Considered to be the more talented brother of the Oasis duo, Noel Gallagher appears to be going from strength to strength after his High Flying Bird's soared from the wreckage of the former band where Liam's Beady Eye unfortunately crashed and burned. The notoriously controversial singer/songwriter is still as cutting and nonchalant with his crowds as ever yet this is just something you come to expect when watching a Gallagher perform.

Despite the lack of onstage interaction, the strength of the material more than makes up for it as Noel performs a great mixture of new solo tracks such as 'A.K.A What A Life' and 'If I Had A Gun' which have already been accepted by the crowds as modern classics. It is of course the Oasis covers including 'Master Plan' and 'Fade Away' that receive the greatest reaction thus far with the audience bellowing along those unforgettable choruses. It is unlikely that an Oasis reunion is on the horizon, but with a live act as solid as Noel's the fans do not seem to be particularly disheartened about this.

The first concert I have seen in Mexico City and the crowd were both passionate and knowledgable. Noel rattled off a full array of NGHFB songs in perfect style along with a few songs from his past including Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Don't look back in anger.

The Teatro Metropolitan as a venue is superb, a 3000 seat capacity that means no one is far from the action.

After the show the locals left the building all singing along to don't look back in anger as a football crowd might do.

What a gig!

Noel on top form. Old classics like Digsys Dinner, Fade Away, Champagne Supernova and an unbelievable version of Don't Look Back In Anger with a choir behind him.

New album sounds even better live than on record, and we even got a guest spot from Johnny Marr and updates on the Man Utd game throughout.

Bring on the next one.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds  today confirm  2023 headline arena dates  across the UK, calling at Hull, London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Glasgow and finishing in Liverpool on 21 st  December.

noel gallagher european tour dates

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds  2023 UK Arena Tour Dates:

30 August                 Hull Bonus Arena 14 December             London OVO Arena Wembley 15 December             Birmingham Utilita Arena 17 December             Cardiff International Arena 18 December             Leeds First Direct Arena 20 December             Glasgow OVO Hydro 21 December             Liverpool M&S Bank Arena

The tour announcement follows the release of  ‘Dead To The World’ , a remarkable new track taken from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ eagerly anticipated fourth studio album ‘Council Skies’, due for release 2 nd  June (via Sour Mash Records). Listen  here  and watch the lyric video  here .

The epic ‘Dead To The World’ is “ by some distance my favourite tune on the album ,” Noel says. “ It has this film noir vibe. It’s not like anything else I’ve ever done before. It’s very melancholic, but I like that. I’m a Gemini – I’m as up as I am down, and the trick is to meet somewhere in the middle and turn that into music .”

The release of ‘Dead To The World’ follows fan excitement as mysterious orchestral clips filmed by Noel himself at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, London emerged on social media at the beginning of the year. Watch  here.

‘Dead To The World’ is one of several songs on the album that boast strings arranged by the hugely talented Rosie Danvers, a long-time High Flying Birds collaborator. Noel says “ Rosie gets what I do. Spending a weekend recording strings in Abbey Road… that’s one of the great privileges in a musician’s life. It sounds majestic.”

Recent singles taken from the forthcoming album,  ‘Pretty Boy’  and  ‘Easy Now’ , were met with overwhelmingly positive reactions by fans and media alike, including significant national radio support.  Earlier this month Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds released  The Cure ’s  Robert Smith’s remix of ‘Pretty Boy’ , taking the single to a new spaced-out dimension.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Wythenshawe Park — tickets, supports, stage times and more

We've been waiting to hear that new Council Skies album in person since it dropped. The time is nearly here.

Danny Jones

Noel Gallagher and his mighty High Flying Birds are back in Manchester this week with a massive outdoor show at the wonderful Wythenshawe Park and it’s set to be a night to remember.

With 0161 set for a massive weekend as people travel into the city for the likes of Festa Italiana and ManiFest , over to Stockport for Moovin Festival and to Bolton for the annual food fest — not to mention that little thing called Pride 2023 — there is A LOT going on this weekend.

However, for those of you revellers who’ll be heading over to M23 for the older Gallagher brother’s huge homecoming gig, we’ve got you sorted.

Here’s everything you need to know about Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday, 26 August.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Noel Gallagher’s HFB (@themightyi)

Are there tickets left?

It’ll be no surprise whatsoever to hear that this thing is going to be absolutely massive with an estimated capacity of around 25,000 people.

That being said, with such a large expectancy, those of you who still haven’t grabbed a ticket are in luck: there are still a fair few ticket options available for now but we wouldn’t advise waiting around much longer. After all, he is a Manc music legend and one of the biggest names on the planet.

You can still grab general admission tickets for £60.50 upwards and even a few resales from £46 on Ticketmaster , as well as VIP packages if you fancy treating yourself.

If you do end up scrambling for one, as always, we advise being very cautious whenever buying from reseller sites and we beg you to stay well and truly away from ticket touts. No gig is worth being stung over and making the problem even worse.

Support acts

When it comes to the support acts on the night, you really are getting proper value for money with this one as not only are you seeing Noel and his High Flying Birds , but you’ll also be graced with the presence of fellow British rock legends, Primal Scream .

As if that wasn’t good enough, you’ll also be getting alternative American band and synth-pop icons Future Islands (a real Manc Audio favourite) as your second support. But it doesn’t stop there; you also have locally-formed rockers, Picture Parlour , as well as Leicester singer-songwriter, Billy Nomates .

Some lineup that.

We’re just praying they all join each other on stage at some point for one big supergroup moment. Come on, you lot, make it happen.

Stage times for Noel Gallagher’s at Wythenshawe Park

As for at what time you’ll get to see who, doors to the event are due to open from 2pm and although all timings are subject to change, here’s your rough running order and each artist’s expected set times:

  • 15:40 – Picture Parlour
  • 16:40 – Billy Nomates
  • 17:40 – Future Islands
  • 19:00 – Primal Scream
  • 21:15 – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
  • 23:00 – Curfew

What a day you’re in for.

We often turn to Setlist.fm when looking for what artists are going to play ahead of a big gig and while you can definitely find that info for the High Flying Birds’ most recent gigs on there , on this occasion we also have the added assurance of the man himself confirming it for us.

Obviously, setlists change on the fly all the time due to various circumstances, especially when you’re talking about someone with a catalogue as huge as Gallagher’s, but we think this is a fairly safe bet — here’s what he’s been playing most recently.

Old, new, a cover and some Oasis – you’re getting a bit of everything.

How to get there

Last but not least, there’s just the small matter of getting there. While we’d always recommend travelling as green as possible/using public transport where you can, there are still some car park tickets that you can buy online from the Live From Wythenshawe website for £16.91.

As for those of you catching a ride, there is yellow signage to the north of the site which will lead you to the pick-up/drop-off point on Wythenshawe Road, M23 0AB.

There are also three tram stops to choose from: Wythenshawe Park, Moor Road and Baguley. However, it’s worth noting that both Wythenshawe Park and Baguley will be closed from 9pm so you won’t be able to get back home this way.

Finally, you can always catch one of the shuttle buses back into the city centre, which will set you back just £3.50 on the day. The service will be operating in a loop from Sale and the city centre, running from 1pm-8pm on the way to Wythenshawe Park and then from 8pm-1:30am when heading home.

The battle to ‘save’ Manchester’s iconic Night & Day Cafe seems to have finally come to an end, with a lengthy court battle wrapping up last month.

The historic venue has helped launch the careers of countless bands and played host to intimate gigs from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys, Wet Leg, James Bay and Elbow.

A couple of years ago though, a ‘new resident’ in the neighbourhood filed a noise complaint.

And then Night & Day Cafe was slapped with a Noise Abatement Notice by the council.

And then they took the whole thing public, and the row rumbled on and on and on.

The resident unwittingly at the heart of the media storm (some very famous faces were rallying behind the venue) said that the music was so loud it could ripple their toilet water, Jurassic Park-style.

In a lengthy piece recently published by The Mill , previous residents came forward and backed them up, saying that the flat was ‘uninhabitable’ and a ‘living nightmare’.

That piece also revealed that Matty Healy, frontman of The 1975, at one time came forward and offered to buy the flat for cash to put an end to the whole thing.

The 1975's Matty Healy reportedly made a cash offer to buy the flat involved in the Night & Day Cafe noise row. Credit; Instagram

But three years after the noise complaint row hit headlines, Night & Day Cafe has been granted permission to continue operating as a gig venue and nightclub, with a few conditions that should end the back-and-forth between them and their neighbours.

Manchester City Council has maintained throughout the ordeal that it has had no intention of shutting down the Oldham Street venue, saying that the Noise Abatement Notice was issued as a ‘last resort’ after months of negotiating and compromising.

After three years of public statements and court hearings and occasional celebrity endorsements, it looks like Night & Day Cafe can finally go back to what it does best.

And if you also got lost in the whole storyline along the way, here’s a little refresher of what happened and when (it goes back a full decade…)

Night & Day Cafe’s noise row as it happened

The Manc Audio Night & Day DJ takeover night 2

January 2014 – Night & Day is first hit with a Noise Abatement Notice, with thousands (including Johnny Marr, Frank Turner and Tim Burgess) signing a petition to have it removed.

September 2014 – Night & Day is allowed to remain in operation, on the condition that owners meet with residents every three months and to discuss any issues.

August 2020 – A man buys a Northern Quarter flat that neighbours Night & Day Cafe. The world is still under lockdown restrictions and live music is all-but non-existent.

July 2021 – Restrictions lift and this iconic venue springs back to life with its first event. The noise is so loud inside the neighbouring apartment, the toilet water ripples, Jurassic Park-style. The residents file their first complaint, and meet with the owners of Night & Day to discuss a solution.

November 2021 – After multiple complaints, and multiple meetings with the venue’s bosses, Manchester City Council serves Night & Day with its Noise Abatement Notice. The council received hundreds of noise complaints that year – this was the only one that resulted in a NAN (the rest were sorted out by venues without council involvement).

November 2021 – Night & Day goes public with its Noise Abatement Notice and launches a petition to have the NAN removed. It gains almost 100,000 signatures and is shared by many famous faces in the music industry.

November 2021 – The resident at the centre of the row speaks to the MEN , saying their issue is with the club nights (not the gigs) and that he’s spent thousands of pounds trying to insulate his flat from the noise.

November 2021 – Local artist Paul Hallows, who works under the name himHallows, creates a series of tongue-in-cheek free posters about the whole situation.

October 2022 – Night & Day pushes its petition to have its NAN removed again, as the venue says its future ‘still hangs in the balance’. It claims that complying with the requirements of the abatement notice ‘would effectively ruin Night & Day’s business’.

November 2022 – Night & Day heads to court for the first time, with celebrities rallying around the venue. Jeremy Pritchard from Everything Everything, Elbow’s frontman Guy Garvey, and Matty Healy from The 1975 all lend their support.

November 2022 – Manchester City Council confirms it’s had five complaints from four different flats – not just the one at the centre of the row.

December 2022 – Blossoms perform at the venue to mark one year to go until the opening of the Co-op Live Arena. They have #SaveNightandDay posters plastered to their equipment.

Summer 2023 – Matty Healy pops up to the flat and tries to buy flat for cash, according to reports in The Mill. The sale fell through because The 1975 were sued for a large sum, after Matty kissed his bandmate on stage in protest of Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

January 2024 – Night & Day heads back to court for a three-day hearing. There were several other court appearances over this timeline, but to be honest, we’ve lost track too. They said again ‘the source of the problem is that when the adjoining building was converted from warehouse to flats, no consideration was given to the pre-existing live music venue’.

March 2024 – It all wraps up quickly at Manchester Magistrates’ court, and the NAN is upheld. Night & Day can remain open, but will have to compromise.

lineup for manchester music festival in garden centre

A second wave of artists has been added to the lineup for this year’s Green Island Festival, the hidden gem Manchester music festival tucked away inside a garden centre.

Genuinely one of our favourite festivals anywhere in the region, Green Island Festival 2024 is already looking set to welcome more people through its verdant doors at

Taking place for its fourth year, the fundamentally grassroots Manchester music festival takes place across three parts over at Hulme Garden Centre just on the outskirts of the city centre and has quickly become a cult classic.

Promising three spectacular days and nights this summer and championing all things new and local on the music scene, you won’t find many more diverse lineups or crowds on this year’s calendar. Speaking of, here’s a look at who they’ve added as part of their second wave:

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Green Island Festival (@greenisland_festival)

Taking place on 15 June, 27 July and 7 September this year, Green Island 2024 is now set to welcome nearly 100 acts from Greater Manchester and beyond as well as more than 1000 festivalgoers in their biggest edition yet.

Local experimental hip-hop jazz band Jointhedots have been added to the main stage in July, joining the likes of Def MaMa Def – two powerful women and rising stars of Senegal’s music scene – as well the smooth as silk R&B soul singer, Victoria Jane and contemporary jazz artist, corto.alto as headliners.

As for the other four stages spread throughout the beloved Manchester garden centre, which has served as a significant cultural hub in the Hulme neighbourhood since the Millenium, names like Ni Maxine , Ubunye the Zulu , Manchester legend of Finders Keepers Records fame, Andy Votel , upcoming DJ Jade Li and many more will be leaving their mark. Even local artist Stanley Chow is getting involved.

With the Forest Stage firming itself as instant success from day one and The Bandstand stage now a permanent fixture at the garden centre even outside of the festival, this thing just keeps growing every year and it won’t stay the best-kept secret for long, so don’t miss out what is sure to be a belter.

  • Backyard Cinema to takeover iconic Albert Hall for immersive Romeo + Juliet screenings
  • Manchester Rum Festival to return bigger than ever before in new venue

Better still, Green Island Festival serves up great food from local independent vendors every year, plenty of sunny cocktails and alcohol-free options, places to chill like the soothing chamomile bed and so much more. Trust us, when the sun shines on this thing it is unmatched vibes.

As well as live music at NIAMOS next door, there’s also a whole host of afterparties for each of the three all-day festivals over at YES in the city centre and the organisers are encouraging everyone to donate an extra quid for every ticket sale to local charity Eat Well MCR , because they’re a sound bunch as well.

In case we haven’t made it abundantly clear already, we’re very big fans of Green Island Fest not just simply because of the live music or the slightly quirky setting, but because of the all-day schedule, family-friendly approach and the immensely wholesome summery atmosphere it gives off every year.

Get yourself down there to at least one of them, if not all three, and we’ll see you there (most likely at the Forest Stage). Grab your tickets HERE .

Green Island is the Manc music festival you’re all missing out on — and it’s in a garden centre
