Travel club picks up where Nomads left off

When the famed  Nomads travel club folded in 2011 after 46 years, Kathie Reschke was ready. The next day, she started NexTour, a Livonia-based tour company. Now, five years later, NexTou r is thriving with former Nomads members and new travelers. We caught up with Reschke, president of NexTour.

Bonnieux, one of Provence's medieval hill towns.

QUESTION: Nomads was famous for its own Boeing 727 jet and huge membership. What happened?

ANSWER: I worked there 22 years but left in 2008. I could see what was coming. It could not withstand the recession. It was good while it lasted.

Q: What was your goal when you started NexTour?

A: I wanted to carry on the tradition without the plane. The concept here is that you meet other travelers before the trip goes. Oftentimes you know people because they were on the same tour you were on before. You often know five or six people on a trip.

10 tempting Michigan travel ideas for this season

Q: How have people found out about you?

A: It’s been pretty much word of mouth for the last five years. But now we are doing some social media, we have a Facebook page , and we are advertising on PBS. We’re a local sponsor listed at the end of "Downton Abbey." We figure those are our kind of people.

Q: What trips do you take?

A: There probably are a repertoire of about 400 trips in the world you can go on. We offer 36 trips annually. If we were doing all 400 possible trips we would only go to each place once every 12 years, but some places are more popular than others. So we will offer those destinations once every five years. We certainly have cruises every year, and we have two to three riverboats every year because that is the hottest thing out there. And then of course there is the Caribbean; you’ll find us in warm destinations in winter. I like to do Europe in spring and fall, mostly.

Q: Is Europe hot this year?

A: This year Europe is a tough sell, which is crazy to me because the value of the dollar is so high. I think people are scared. Much of our European schedule came out right after the Paris bombings. That put the kibosh on some of the trips.

Q: Do you do short trips in the U.S.?

A: We do regional weekend getaways, but because we don’t have our own plane the weekend getaways are mostly longer than they were at Nomads, four-five days.

Q: Are you the guides? You are not subcontracting trips to another company?

A: Yes, we are the guides. We don’t subcontract the tour. I have to get a bus, of course, but every time you add a layer of subcontracting it’s 10% more. I always try to do as much as I can myself and pass the savings on to the members. For instance, the upcoming (May) trip to Provence I did all the planning myself.

Q: Provence?

A: You know you get to the south end of the France river boat cruise and it lets you off in Aix? Or somewhere, and it is beautiful, but you want to stay more but you can’t because the river boat trip has ended? This tour starts where the river boats would end, for people who want to see more.

Q: Where else are you going?

A: We have a Canadian polar bear trip. We will fly to Winnipeg and then take the train two days to Churchill, Manitoba, then spend the day hunting polar bears then take the sleeper train back. They don’t have a lot of lodging in Churchill, so I thought it would be fun to see the Canadian Shield and create a trip for train aficionados.

We’ll do the Albuquerque balloon festival. We are going to the Guest House at Graceland next fall for the tree lighting.  We are going to do Christmas in the United Kingdom, focusing on York and Bath and their Christmas markets, and get outside of London.

Q: Do you take single travelers?

A: Yes. About 40% of our members are singles.  There are single supplements, because they are charged by the hotel or cruise line. But sometimes we have great deals. Crystal cruises may charge a single only a 10% supplement. Some supplements are 45% or double.

Q: What’s the age of your traveler?

A: Really, it’s 55 and up. These are the people who have the money and time.

Q: You offer 36 trips a year. How many of them fill up and go?

A: We end up doing about 21 trips a year. We average 176 days out, and about 500 people a year take our trips.

Q: You call your customers members and charge $60 a year in dues. Why?

A: It’s not a nonprofit club like the Nomads was, but we still like the club concept.

Nomads Boeing 727 | by The Roving Aircraft Historian

Nomads Boeing 727

The nomads travel club was founded in 1964, as the brainchild of several wealthy detroit businessmen. the idea behind nomads was an “air travel club,” in which the company could offer trips worldwide to various destinations as voted by the company’s members. nomads was a slight twist on the air club idea, however: its members would sometimes not be informed as to where they were going. the club would board the aircraft and its eventual destination would be a surprise. this proved popular with nomads’ members.   nomads started off with an ex-eastern airlines douglas dc-7, but were soon able to acquire a lockheed l-188 electra, which was taken for a celebratory worldwide tour from nomads’ home base in detroit. in 1981 the electra was replaced by a boeing 727.   with rising fuel prices and the gradual decline of detroit in recent years, nomads was increasingly unable to offer the package tours that it used to; moreover, its 727 was getting old. in 2011, after two years of losses and competition with the internet, nomads announced that it was declaring bankruptcy, ending one of the united states’ oldest and last air travel clubs.   this aircraft, n727m, was a former pan american example acquired by nomads in 1981. in 1993, it was replaced by a newer 727 and sold to kalitta air. n727m was retired in 2011.  .

And while it may be tempting to book your next adventure through a big-name travel agency or online booking platform, there are plenty of reasons why joining a Michigan-based travel club could be the best decision you make for your future travels.

Travel clubs provide an exclusive and personalized experience that simply can’t be replicated by any other means. In addition to offering access to unique destinations and experiences, they often provide members with special perks such as discounts on airfare, hotels, car rentals, activities and more.

This means that they can offer insider tips on what to see and do in popular tourist spots like Mackinac Island (known for its fudge shops and horse-drawn carriage rides), Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (home to stunning beaches and hiking trails), Frankenmuth (a Bavarian-style village famed for its Christmas markets) as well as lesser-known attractions throughout Michigan’s charming small towns.

But beyond just pointing you towards worthwhile hotspots, regional-focused travel clubs also connect travelers with local people who hold unique jobs or possess little known passions – allowing them to bring their destination alive in fresh new ways daily! For example: alligator handlers holding shows at gas stations off interstate highways; lighthouse enthusiasts deep-diving into history-rich maritime stories; artisanal honey producers sharing unusual hive facts; up-and-coming artists performing live sets anywhere from wineries or rail cars – this Midwest region is rich with quirk!

Whether you’re looking for thrilling outdoor adventures like kayaking down rapids on Lake Superior during fall colors season, strolling along historic downtowns discovering quaint coffee houses operated out century-old homes year-round , biking scenic routes past fruit orchards, wineries or rollercoasting sand dunes across the span of Michigan summers – travel clubs in Michigan can point you to memorable experiences outside your routine and comfort levels.

Joining a Michigan-based travel club couldn’t be easier- all you have to do is sign up and start exploring their planned trips, meetups with fellow members who share similar passions or private recommendations from other travelers. Plus, traveling with a group offers safety by having backup for incidents and expanding horizons beyond what solo adventures offer. Before long you’ll recognize common names on messaging boards as familiar bonds in real time travels where there’s always someone willing to order you that local brew if need-be!

So get ready to expand your horizons while bonding through shared love of adventure when exploring some of the best destinations around Michigan through membership in one of its established travel clubs! Table with useful data:

These early travel clubs typically organized trips by rail or steamship, and focused on cultural destinations such as museums, art galleries, and historical landmarks.

Ten Years a Nomad: A Traveler’s Journey Home

The book is a memoir of my ten years traveling and backpacking the world and the lessons I learned from that. It follows the arc of a trip around the globe: getting the bug, the planning, setting off, the highs, the lows, the friendships made, the relationships forged (and lost), the emotions you feel when it's all over.

Unlike my previous books, this is not a “how to guide” but a collection of insights, advice, and stories from the road, conveying the experience of what it's like to quit your job, follow the road not taken, and travel the world trying to discover who you are and what the world has to offer. In short, it is my opus on travel meant, to inspire you to pursue your own dreams.

In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential.

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport.

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm.

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.

The Nomads travel club was founded in 1964, as the brainchild of several wealthy Detroit businessmen. The idea behind Nomads was an "air travel club," in which the company could offer trips worldwide to various destinations as voted by the company's members. Nomads was a slight twist on the air club idea, however: its members would sometimes not be informed as to where they were going.
