About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Help…totally overwhelmed! Our 19 year old daughter has chosen Greece as her “once in a lifetime with just Mom and Dad” trip. We need to travel in May or June (short notice) and will have up to 10 days. Figured a couple of days in Athens and then she wants a water/beach/scenery type of vacation. Leaning towards focusing on Athens and Santorini unless you feel doing another island (Mykonos, Crete) is a must. Do I try to book everything myself, use a USA travel agent, a Greece travel agent? Normally I would research and book everything but this trip is throwing me for a loop. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you do on your website.

' src=

It’s easy to plan and book yourself and that’s what I recommend. I’d do an Athens-Mykonos-Santorini-Athens loop. Book ferry tickets for Athens to Mykonos and Mykonos to Santorini on FerryHopper.com . Fly from Santorini back to Athens. Then book hotels in Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini on Booking.com . Easy.

' src=

We are in Santorini and want to buy ferry tickets to Mykonos. And then Mykonos to Athens. I see many different places to buy tickets. Is any one cheaper than the other? Can we buy the Mykonos to Athens ferry tickets in Santorini?

All the travel agents sell ferry tickets at the same price (they’re regulated by the government), so go to the most convenient one. Yes, you can buy Mykonos to Athens tickets in Santorini (and at the same price as buying in Mykonos).

' src=

I’ve booked a hotel in Oia that said it had a pool but I found out they don’t! Do you know of any luxury hotels with pools that might allow me to purchase an access pass, book a spa treatment or even that would allow us to use their pool if we buy lunch? I was really looking forward to swimming in an infinity pool overlooking the caldera!

Thanks! C. Gilbert

Sorry, there are no hotels that allow non-guests to use their pool (even if you pay or buy lunch). The best option is Lioyerma pool bar which offers free use of their very nice pool for buying drinks or food.

Dave, Great website…we are traveling in July to Greece. We arrive early evening and stay in centre city Athens. We plan to leave early the next morning and take a ferry from Piraeus to Mykonos. I was thinking to book ferry tickets online a couple of days before arrival to Athens. Once I purchase the ferry tickets, is there an option to print tickets at home? Or do I have to pick up tickets at the port? I also read there is a travel agency at the airport in arrivals, so could I pick up tickets there as well?

Thanks, Raj

You can print them but if they don’t have a bar code they’re not good for boarding the ferry. In which case you pick them up from the kiosk at the Piraeus ferry port. It’s easy and efficient, just be at the port 45 minutes before departure and you’ll be fine. (You can book at the airport but not pickup tickets that you booked online.)

Business launching from Santorini

Petros Nomikos is a businessman of the world coming from Santorini. Travelling non-stop to London, Athens and America, he has given life to a range of projects –in some of them Greece and Santorini being the starting point and in others the ultimate recipient. In the island of his ancestors, Petros Nomikos got inspired and set up Greece Debt Free (greecedebtfree.org), an NGO aiming at reducing the Greek debt.

Furthermore, he set up the Santozeum Museum in Fira, and used raw materials of the Theraic volcanic soil to produce Volkan Beer, which is consumed at world famous places like Restaurant Petrus of G. Ramsay in London. ‘Volkan Beer and Santozeum have been developed to help Greece be repositioned as a top destination with high-quality products’. Being the Vice President of the Thera Petros M. Nomikos FoundationPetros Nomikos comes from a shipowner family that have always been helping the island at difficult times. Petros Nomikos never forgets his roots and visits his homeland as frequently as possible to listen to life stories narrated by Mr. Theodosis in Mesaria, who takes care of his great grandfather’s canava (traditional wine cellar).

Read the interview with Mr P. Nomikos

Mr Nomikos, a man of your power decides to invest in his homeland, the island of Santorini. You gave us the Volkan Beer and Santozeum, when you are already involved with the Thera Foundation. What made you take the decision to launch these products and cultural organizations?

My family has supported Santorini by gifting, earthquake relief, roads, schools, medical clinics, cable cars, and later research programs since the 1930's.  I have always enjoyed a close relationship with the island and wanted to continue to support the community myself.

For these reasons I chose to invest in Greece and Santorini, because our nations is in economic crisis, I wanted to focus on economic development. My projects Volkan Beer and Santozeum, were designed to help lead the movement towards rebranding Greece as a high quality destination with high quality products.

In a recent interview you mentioned that the idea of your latest move, Greece Debt Free, was born in Santorini during your visit in winter of 2011. Give us the background of this idea that aims to decrease the Greek debt?

While in Santorini the people in the town made me realize what great patriots we Greeks are but also how little trust we have for government.  I created a non-profit, non-government, non-political foundation that allows ordinary people to donate in order to help buy and cancel Greek debt, without funding the state. Buying and canceling bonds should be the governments job, but government lacks the funding and the ability (Troika banned it). I felt that if people can be sure of what happens to their money then maybe the patriotic sprit will overwhelm a government crisis and people might dig into their pockets, and help GDF buy government bonds at the lowest price and then cancel them. See www.greecedebtfree.org GDF also has supporting products that donate a portion of their profits to debt relief, Volkan beer is one such product.

Your grandfather was born in Santorini and your family have really helped the island's society since 1946, and after the earthquake of 1956. How connected are you with the island?

Very much, as you can see from my various project here.

Santorini has changed radically over the last few years, regarding the environment, the architecture and everyday life. What do you think about these changes and what are you predicting for island's future? Do you have any future business plans for Santorini?

Some areas have been overbuilt. Building laws may have been structured to support local techniques and styles, but they ignore the old style of cave dwellings and also do not take into account that people will stretch and bend the law.  People build up too much and this creates visual problems.  I believe building should develop and construction should continue, but new laws should be created that take into account and reward structures that are single story and fit the local architecture. That is the beauty of Santorinian authentic traditions.

This year is dedicated to island's gastronomy, as it has been declared 2013: Year of Gastronomy for Santorini. What are your favourite flavors from the island? (products, dishes, restaurants).

I like quail, a very local yet migratory bird that is very limited now because it is over hunted, meletinia, the honey and or course the tomatoes.   Last year I developed a tasting menu to match our beers at Gordon Ramsey's Michelin star Petrus restaurant in London.  I like mixing local flavor with the best international chefs.  In developing Volkan, we combined two rare local flavors and a little science. Volkan takes ancient Citrus Medica essence, a 4 kilo citrus from Naxos, brought to Greece by Alexander the Great from Persia and Santorini Grape honey, honey from bees that gather sucrose from the grapes laid out in the sun to create Vinsanto in September, we then blend these two flavors into the beer.  The Santorini honey that I love gives the beer such a unique and local flavor that has been appreciated internationally.

Like our other project, the Santozeum on the cliff, we combine the best of Santorin's past and our local traditions with modern thinking and the highest quality.

How often are you coming to Santorini and what do you enjoying doing when you are in the island?

As often as I can, and I like to visit Messaria where Baba Theodosis looks after my great-grandfather's canava. He is a very very special and wonderful man with many great stories and songs that keep me connected to my history on the island.

What are your strongest memories from Santorini, from childhood until today?

The great people who know my family in town and in the port of Thira, the mesmerizing view, and, as a child, the donkeys on the path up from the port.

Yiannis nomikos’ farm in santorini: pistachios, tomatoes and blossoming capers.

Agricultural life, as it is now, cannot meet the needs of demand

BY KYRIAKI VASSALOU

Translated by angeliki kouroutzi, published 19 july 2021, we met yiannis nomikos at his farm in vothonas –a small village located at the centre of the island- on the first day of summer/ photo: nikos pilos.

Santorini’s land is not an easy case. It has never been; a dormant, but steaming volcano in the middle of the Aegean Sea, an arid, dry land and a sun so strong that sizzles everything.

And yet, in this volcanic soil, fed with sea salt and the damp of the night; a microclimate favourable to vines (ground-hugging ones), tomatoes (small, thick-skinned and not that good-looking), round courgettes, white eggplants, capers and, of course, golden-blond fava beans, with a velvety texture and delicate taste, “ the reigning product of Santorini, alongside wine ” as Yiannis Nomikos says, whom we met at his farm in Vothonas –a small village located at the centre of the island- on the first day of summer. It was Monday. A different kind of fava beans, a product with Protected Designation of Origin for ten years now. But, this year has been a bad one, so much so that its crop was particularly poor.

“Why so?” was our reasonable question to start a long and interesting conversation. “This year it didn’t rain at all during the winter and in the spring the island suffered from the sirocco that lasted for days and dried up everything, even the farms that were still a little dewy,” he says, explaining that what generally determines summer production is spring. Yiannis Nomikos comes from a farming family. Studying at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Science at the Industrial School of Piraeus, he seemed to take a different path in life, but it was not long before he returned to the island and engaged in agriculture.

Born and raised in the small village of Exo Gonia , located on the south-eastern side of Santorini , he left to study, but always returned in the summer to help in the fields. “From my studies I have kept the mind-set. At university you learn how to work methodically, how to do your research, how to confirm your sources. All this knowledge has helped me a lot in everything I have done since then.”

Yiannis Nomikos comes from a farming family

And he became a farmer.

Asked what prompted him to return to the island and become a farmer, instead of a hotelier for example, Mr. Nomikos admits that Santorini may not be a farmer’s paradise, but he himself had many childhood memories there. At the same time, a very strong image had been etched in his mind, an image that motivated him: “Farmers have their feet firmly on the ground. They take off their shoes and walk barefoot on soil. The earth never fails you.”

As he recalls, “When I would come to help, I would prune the vines and would see the juice running from the grapes. All I was thinking about was how I was going to make that juice into a nice wine for my friends. That’s how I started; bottling the wine. Something my grandfather did, but not my father. All I cared about back then was friendship and I saw good wine as a means of socializing.”

The bottling of wine in the few, back then, wineries takes us back to the 1990s. It was during those years that the foundations were laid for the next decade and the definitive and irrevocable return of Yiannis Nomikos to Santorini, armed with new ideas, passion and vision. Indeed, in 2006, here in Messaria, where this conversation takes place, the construction of his artisanal industry was completed: a small, well-organised vertical unit, which is responsible for the production, processing, packaging and distribution of the products he grows and markets.

Climate change has affected agricultural life

“It is a continuous effort to standardize the island’s agricultural products,” he says, among which we find packaged yellow fava beans , tomatoes in various forms (sundried, spoon sweet, jam, pickles and sauce), jars of capers and caper leaves and, in the last few years, bottles of extra virgin olive oil, which has recently won an award. “We have olive trees now”, he is quick to explain, and indeed, during our countless walks around the island, alongside the vineyards, we also spot estates with large and small olive trees. A fruit that does not seem to be unknown to Santorini, as pollen grains from olives and coniferous trees have been discovered in the layer of material from the volcanic eruption that destroyed the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri (1500 BC).

nomikos travel santorini

«During the pandemic, once again, I realized that the earth never fails you.”

A tale of many pistachios.

Olives, pine trees – we see a few of them here and there on the island – and pistachio trees. Here is a nice story that Mr. Nomikos likes to narrate: “The pistachio trees were brought to Santorini by my namesake, Petros Nomikos (the founder of the Santorini Conference Centre in Fira), in an effort to expand the island’s crops. Pistachio trees love dry land and so they thrived here. At first, Petros was giving them away, but no one would take them. It wasn’t until he started selling them that people became interested. My father had no money to buy pistachio trees. The ones you see here on the property were grown from seed.”

And he continues: “ Santorinian pistachios , which are dry, small and delicious, were completely forgotten before we took up their production again and included them to the island’s list of products fifteen years ago. Pistachios bring me back strong memories; my mother used to dry them in the sun twice, once before and once after salting them. She did it to save on the oven, but generally the gentler the method you use to dry them, the tastier they become. This process gives them their dark red colour and a very distinctive flavour. Therefore, we follow the exact same process today.”

And the story is not over yet: “We were making a living out of pistachios. As a pupil and even as a student later, I would get my bag, go to the shops, where everybody knew me, and sell them. I often kept the money for myself, instead of bringing it to the family (laughter). Later, I even added a label, but it often got lost among the pistachios in the bag. The same happened with fava beans. Those were different times. However, I always knew that our products were very good and had potential; apart from the tomato paste, their processing was still non-existent on the market. And that’s how I got here today.”

«We keep the knowledge we got from our parents»

nomikos travel santorini

We still listen to nature

Climate change, tourism and tradition.

We talked a lot more with Yiannis Nomikos. About how difficult the agricultural life is, not only because of the objective difficulties of the profession itself or the island’s terrain, but also because of climate change. This year the fava beans withered, a few years ago a heat wave brought the harvest to a halt; global warming is now a fact.

We also discussed the difficulty of living a rural life in a place like Santorini, where everyone is involved in tourism. “We have been engrafted with tourism and we ourselves are the negative consequences,” he jokes and then gets serious. “I won’t hide from you that several times so far I have mentally divided the facility we are in into four suites. But the pandemic came, and once again I realized that the earth never fails you. There was a great demand for our products all this time. And there is a general shift from the island’s restaurants as well. Agricultural production, of course, as it is now, can in no way meet the demand.”

“And this shows something”, concludes Mr Nomikos, “whether it is about the potential of a place, or about what is called tradition, since we are talking about traditional local products”.

“But tradition,” he explains, “is a living reality, because otherwise it’s just a museum piece. Here we still live. We keep the knowledge we got from our parents, we keep our seeds, we use new means – it goes without saying that you can’t ignore evolution – we read, we keep up to date, but we still listen to nature and adapt our crops to the environment, we are constantly working to produce even better quality products in the most natural way. Well, if we ever achieve a direct link between production and consumption, as is the case in Italy, then our efforts will indeed have paid off. My father, however, when I brought him here and showed him my little industry –set up with all the facilities provided by the machines, especially for fava beans- was really moved.

We found Yiannis Nomikos at his farm, called “Yiannis Nomikos Estate – Santorini Earth Goods”, on the provincial road Kamari-Akrotiri,Vothonas, +30 22860 31016,+30 6972 232743, madeinsantorini.gr . The farm can be visited by appointment.

The stone-paved Nikos Nomikos Street is one of the liveliest places for strolling in Oia . It is the settlement's largest commercial center, featuring various boutiques, gift shops, and other stores.

In addition, some of Oia's most known viewpoints are located nearby the street. It is highly recommended to get there during the evening to catch the sunset.

You will find many restaurants with a cozy atmosphere, as well as cafes that offer an excellent view of the sea.

Last but not least, Nikos Nomikos street is the main axis of Oia. After accessing it, you will be able to take numerous vertical pathways or alleys to explore the most charming labyrinth-like place in Santorini!

Few words about the island

Santorini, Thira or Strogili (older name) is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, at the island complex of Cyclades, south of Ios and west of Anafi. Its distance from Piraeus is 128 nautical miles and 63 nautical miles from Crete. The Athinios, the largest port of the island, has been created in the homonym cove. Its surface is 76.19 square kilometers. Today Santorini is one of the most famous tourist centers around the world. It is known for its volcano. The last volcanic activity was in 1950.Parts of the volcano are: Nea Kameni (1707-1711 AD), Palea Kameni (46-47 AD), the submarine volcano Columbo (active) ( 1650 AD), the Christiana islands.

Santorini belongs to the Aegean volcanic arc and it is characterized active volcano together with Methana,Milos and Nisyros. Santorini as well as the islands of Thirassia and Aspronisi are remnants of the volcanic island Strogili. Strogili was a volcanic cone. Its central part was blown up along with the volcano’s crater by the Minoan eruption which took place in 1613 BC and resulted in the creation of what we now call the caldera of Santorini and the destruction of the prehistoric culture of the island.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

World time zones have a positive or negative offset computed from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). UTC has uniform seconds defined by International Atomic Time (TAI), with leap seconds announced at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation.
