The Santa Maria Church was initially constructed as a more accessible chapel for its neighboring town to the north, Narvacan, in 1567. According to the local legends, the town's statue of the Virgin Mary kept disappearing from the first chapel and was seen on a guava tree atop a hill. Due to this, the locals decided to build another structure in 1765, which they later officially recognized as the Santa Maria Church.

It is this structure that stands today. A year later, this same church was made an independent ministry of the town instead of serving as a chapel-of-ease for Narvacan in light of many settlers moving to Santa Maria.

Due to the locals' devotion to the Virgin Mary, the parish was also called the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The whole structure is surrounded by a defensive wall and features a Baroque style, which placed it on the World UNESCO Heritage Sites list.

The Santa Maria Church was designated as a World UNESCO Heritage Site in 1993 as part of a collection of four Spanish-era churches in the country, officially recognized as the Baroque Churches of the Philippines. Like the three other structures, the Santa Maria Church boasts intricate Spanish motifs that were ultimately finished using local materials instead of those typically used in Spain and neighboring European countries.

In the province of Ilocos Norte, you can find another of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines called the Paoay Church. Also known as the San Agustin Church, it is situated about 19 kilometers from Laoag City , the province's capital. Mina-manage ito ng Sta. Lucia Land pero welcome ang mga tourists dito. Sa entrance, kakailanganin mong umakyat ng mahigit sa 200 steps para marating ang falls. Well-maintained ang area na may mga concrete steps at paths. May mga cottages at tables din na pwede i-rent. Kahit na developed ang area, hindi naman ito nakabawas sa ganda ng kapaligiran.

Ang water basin ng falls ay pinalibutan na ng cemented boulders at nagsisilbing swimming area kasama ng isa pang pool sa baba nito. Bukod sa mga families at magbabarkada, patok din ito sa mga motorcycle riders at cyclists.

Pililla Wind Farm

Ang hilly landscape ng Pililla Wind Farm ay may area na lagpas 4,500 hectares. Ang mga naglalakihang wind turbines na nakatayo dito ang nagdo-dominate sa area at naging symbol na rin ng town. Bukod sa pagiging scenic na tourist attraction nito, ang main purpose ng mga wind turbines na ito ay mag-supply ng kuryente. Mina-manage ito ng Alternergy Philippine Holdings Corporation (APHC) at nakaka-produce ito ng halos 150 Gigawatt hours ng kuryente kada taon.

Sa mga gustong makita ang turbines mula sa hill na katapat ng viewing deck, kailangan magbayad ng P10 para makaakyat ng burol. Kahit mula sa malayo ay maganda pa rin ang view lalo na kapag sunset o early morning.

Katulad ng na-mention na kanina, may designated na viewing deck kung saan puwede makita ang mga turbines mula sa mas mataas na lugar. May maliit na information building din sa area. Bahay na Bato

Ito ay sinasabing pinaka-lumang bahay sa Pililla. Matatagpuan ito malapit sa St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church. Ang architectural design ng Bahay na Bato ay reminiscent noong Spanish colonial era. Ang combination ng stone masonry at woodwork sa exterior at interiors ay intact pa rin at na-survive ang napakaraming tao na lumipas.

Ang Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs ay opisyal na dineklara ng National Museum of the Philippines bilang National Cultural Treasure noong 1973. Dito makikita ang mga ancient carvings na naka-preserve sa rock wall mula pa sa panahon ng prehistoric Philippines. Una itong na-discover ng national artists na si Carlos “Botong” Francisco noong 1965.

Ito ay matatagpuan sa kahabaan ng boundary ng Angono at Binangonan. Ang tunnel papunta sa petroglyphs ay may ilang metro ang layo mula sa kalsada (Col. Guido Road). May mga bakod na nakaharang sa rock wall para maprotektahan ang mga prehistoric carvings, pero puwede pa rin makita ng mga turista ang mga ito mula sa wooden viewing deck.

Ang Angono ay bayan ng mga kilalang artist at museum kaya naman tinawag itong “Art Capital of the Philippines”. Ang kalsada kung saan matatagpuan ang ancestral house ng national artist na si Carlos “Botong” Francisco ay binansagan na Angono Mural Street dahil sa maraming mga street arts na nagbibigay buhay dito.

Ang mga artists na nasa likod ng mga murals at sculptured walls na nasa Doña Aurora Street ay sina Charlie Anorico, Gerry Batang, at Ebong Pinpino. Ang mga murals na ito ay batay sa mga masterpieces ni Botong Francisco at may mga text mula sa kantang “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan” na isa ring cultural treasure na isinulat naman ng national artist na si Maestro Lucio San Pedro.

Binuksan ang ancestral house sa publiko noong 1970s nang walang definite na opening hours. Dahil dito, naging accessible sa publiko ang mga masterpieces at memoirs — mako-consider na isang symbolic na gesture ng pag-offer ng kanyang sarili sa mga Pilipino sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga obra. Ang kanilang mga obra ay nagsho-showcase sa Filipino culture, history, at traditions.

Ipinagdiriwang taon-taon sa bayan ng Angono ang Higantes Festival . Eventually, naging celebration ito para kay Pope St. Clement I.

Mount Daraitan

Parte ng Sierra Madre mountain range ang Mount Daraitan at ito ay sakop ng bayan ng Tanay sa Rizal at bayan ng General Nakar sa Quezon province.

Kilala ang Daraitan sa hitik nitong forest at limestone formations na nagdo-dominate sa summit. Mula sa tuktok, makikita mo ang napakagandang views ng Tinipak River at ng Sierra Madre mountain range.

• Calinawan Cave

Must-visit ang Calinawan Cave hindi lang para sa adventure seekers pero para na rin sa history buffs. Ang multi-level cave system na ito ay may nakakamanghang rock formations (stalagmites and stalactites) na siguradong magpapakilig sa mga spelunkers at curious travelers. Madaling i-explore ang first two levels kaya ideal ito para sa beginners at mga bata. Pero sa mga sumunod na level, kakailanganin gumapang at dumaan sa maliliit na butas. 15 Best TOURIST SPOTS in MINDANAO 2024 (Beaches, Falls, Rivers & More)

As we all know, Mindanao is the second largest of the three (3) major Philippine Islands. It is approximately 97,530 sq. km and is home to 25% of the entire nation’s population. Mindanao is the farthest island region from the capital Metro Manila, this is the reason why sometimes it is outshined by its siblings Luzon and Visayas in the tourism industry.

However, make no mistake! Because through the years, Mindanao is becoming more and more popular not only in the country but also in the whole world. A lot of tourists are discovering hidden gems in the entire region that are worthy of international attention. Mindanao has an enormous set of preserved natural wonders from mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and everything that you can imagine!

The proud island of Mindanao is also being recognized in the whole world! Firstly, it has long been known as the home of the Philippines’ tallest mountain, Mt. Apo. It’s also the breeding grounds of the largest eagle in the world in terms of length and wingspan! Yes, I’m talking about no other than our very own Philippine Eagle. Aside from these natural wonders, several personalities in our current society proudly represent Mindanao! First of all, the current Philippine president, Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte traces his roots from the major city of Davao itself. Also, our first Filipino Olympic Gold Medalist, Hidilyn Diaz also comes from Mindanao!

First up! Ah, I think there’s no better way to start this phenomenal list than mentioning the surfers’ haven itself, Siargao Island. Siargao is considered to be the Surfing Capital of the Philippines.

You don’t know how to surf yet? Well, don’t worry! There are several surfing lessons offered around the island so you’ll learn in no time. Another thing so good about Siargao is that it’s beautifully preserved. The place isn’t crowded like the other islands in the country so tourists have the perfect chance to appreciate its beauty.

When traveling the Philippines, arm yourself with some useful Filipino or Tagalog words and phrases . Locals like us would love to hear that you try to communicate with us using our very own Filipino language . It is the national language of the Philippines after all, and widely spoken and understood anywhere in the country, whether you are in Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao.

Filipino is mainly derived from the Tagalog language, which is spoken in Manila and many parts of Luzon. While Filipino and Tagalog are often used interchangeably, the Filipino language is actually composed of other local languages like Bisaya as well as borrowed words from international languages like Spanish, Malay, and Chinese.

Now, let’s learn some basic Filipino or Tagalog words and phrases, which we categorized according to usage.

Basic Filipino or Tagalog words and phrases for greetings and introductions

1. “Mabuhay!” = “Welcome!”

“Mabuhay” literally means “to live / long live” but it is also a famous Filipino expression when you welcome someone or toast for success.

2. “Magandang araw!” = “Good day!”

You can also use these specific variations:

• Magandang umaga – Good morning
• Magandang tanghali – Good noon
• Magandang hapon – Good afternoon
• Magandang gabi – Good evening

3. “Kamusta?” = “How are you?”

Say this if you want to know how the person is doing.

4. “Ayos lang.” = “I’m fine.”

16. “Saan?” = “Where?”

Use this Tagalog word if you want to know the location of a place or thing.

17. “Paano?” = “How?”

You may use this Filipino word when asking for instructions on certain things like asking for directions. You say, “Paano pumunta doon?” (How to get there?).

18. “Saan ako bababa?” = “Where do I alight?”

You already know that “saan” means “where”. Just add the Tagalog words “ako” (me) and “bababa” (go down) if you want to know where you should alight or get off, especially when you commute.

19. “Saan ito papunta?” = “Where is this going?”

This is what you say when you want to know the route or destination.

20. “Saan ka pupunta?” = “Where are you going?”

Use this Filipino phrase if you ask where someone is going.

21. “Para po / Dito lang po” = “I’ll get off here / I’ll alight here”

When riding a public transport such as a jeep or bus, these are the Tagalog sentences you say to the driver or conductor if you want to alight.

22. “Paalam” = “Goodbye”

28. “Tao po!” = “Hello!”

Say this to call the attention of the store attendant.

When you want to buy something, you say, “Pabili po ng bigas” (I’ll buy rice).

31. “Magkano?” = “How much?”

36. “Suki” = “Loyal customer or patron”

Don’t be surprised to hear you being called “suki” (loyal customer or patron) when exploring the local markets. The vendor usually says, “Suki, bili na!” (Customer, buy now!).

37. “Kain tayo!” = “Let’s eat!”

Kain is a pandiwa (action word or verb in Filipino) which means “eat”. You say “Kain tayo!” as a courtesy if you want to invite someone to eat.

38. “Gutom na ako!” = “I’m hungry already!”

Make sure that you aren’t “hangry” before you say this.

39. “Gusto ko nang kumain!” = “I want to eat already!”

Say this Tagalog phrase when you’re really hungry and want to dig in.

40. “Masarap!” = “Delicious!”

You may add “sobra” (very) to make it “Sobrang sarap!” (Very delicious!).

MANILA -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged the Filipino people to continue practicing the “Filipino hospitality” and become the country’s tourism ambassadors wherever they are as part of their contributions leading towards a “Bagong Pilipinas.”

“Ang Filipino hospitality ay katangian na noon pa man nang bawat Pilipino. Isabuhay pa natin ito, lalo pang paghusayan, ito ang maha-halagang sangkap sa ating biyahe tungo sa ‘Bagong Pilipinas’,” President Marcos said on his latest vlog.

The chief executive said Filipinos are known around the world for their hospitality, making it as one of the tourism brands that the Philippines can brag about.

He added that people’s appreciation to local talents is also what makes the Philippines stand out from around the world.

“Ang Filipino hospitality na ito ay likas sa bawat isa sa atin dahil sa tahanan nagmumula ang pag-aalaga ng mga Pilipino,” President Marcos said as he recalled how he is received by the world leaders during his various state visits.

He said all efforts to welcome him in his foreign trips are always “foot forward,” prompting him to talk about the Filipino hospitality practices in the Palace whenever a foreign leader visits the Philippines.

President Marcos said the Philippines, just like any other countries around the world, would strategically place their flags along the streets where foreign visitors will pass, ensure the cleanliness of the streets, put up painting touchups, and play personalized music.

The President also elaborated the process of carefully preparing the meals to be served to the guests depending on their dietary requirements, their preferences and allergies while they receive gifts from local stores, paving the way for MSMEs.

Among other things, President Marcos highlights the importance of offering visitors the convenience of proximity of the place where they will temporarily stay in the Philippines to ensure that they will make it on time for their scheduled meetings.

“Imbis na maghohotel pa sila sa malayo, matatraffic, at mahihirapan sa schedule ng mga meeting, dito na lang sila sa Palasyo. Nagkataon na may mga napabayaang lumang bahay sa compound ng Malacañang at may nakita kaming isa na puwede pang i-renovate, ‘yun ang aming ginawa,” he said.

All of these, the President said he felt proud whenever foreign leaders ask him on what makes Filipinos graciously unique.

“Eh nakakataba ng puso ‘pag narinig mo ‘yun,” President Marcos said. “Mahalaga na ang ating bisita ay pakiramdam naman nila ay very welcomed sila dito. Para naman maging mas matibay ang ating pagsasama, ang ating mga agreement, ang ating mga partnerships sa iba’t ibang bansa,” he added.

President Marcos highlighted the importance of working together, which is also for him, is reflected in the world economy.

That’s why it’s important for world leaders to know that they are important to Filipinos, stressed the chief executive. (PND)
