What do you think of when you hear the acronym “NTUC”? The FairPrice supermarket, of course, said every self-respecting auntie ever. But frequent travellers might also think of NTUC Income’s popular travel insurance plan since they are one of Singapore’s biggest travel insurance providers.

However, NTUC Income travel insurance plans also have a reputation for being expensive. Some internet users have also complained that it is difficult to make claims.

Are these rumours true? Let’s find out once and for all.

Should I buy NTUC Travel Insurance?

1. NTUC Travel Insurance Summary

NTUC Income has 2 travel insurance plans:

NTUC Travel Insurance Standard

NTUC Income Enhanced PreX (covers pre-existing medical conditions)

Each travel insurance plan is then further sub-divided into 3 plan tiers which provide different amounts of coverage:

Classic/ Basic PreX

Deluxe/ Superior PreX

Preferred/ Prestige PreX (most expensive)

The premiums you will pay for your travel insurance plan largely depend on the country you’re travelling to. Usually, the further your country of destination, the more expensive your travel insurance plan will be. Here are the countries that are covered by NTUC travel insurance:

ASEAN : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam

Asia : Australia, China (no Mongolia, Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, ASEAN

Worldwide : All countries

Countries not covered : Afghanistan, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, Syria

2. NTUC Travel Insurance Coverage

Here’s a quick look at the premiums and coverage for the  NTUC Travel Insurance Standard  plans:

At $250,000 to $1,000,000, NTUC travel insurance’s overseas medical coverage is generous compared to some of its competitors such as Sompo Travel Insurance’s $200,000 to $400,000 overseas medical limit.

However, do note that emergency medical evacuation shares the same overseas medical expense claim limit for adults aged 70 and over – which may not be sufficient if you are in that age range, run into an adverse medical situation abroad, and require both immediate treatment and a medical flight home to Singapore. If medical coverage is important to you, FWD Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.

3. NTUC Travel Insurance Pre-Existing Conditions

NTUC Income is one of the few insurers in Singapore that provide comprehensive travel insurance plans that cover pre-existing medical conditions , such as asthma, eczema, diabetes, high blood pressure, even heart disease. The other two that cover pre-existing conditions are  MSIG travel insurance and Etiqa travel insurance .

The most obvious difference between a Pre-Ex travel insurance plan and a regular travel insurance plan is, of course, price. The cheapest NTUC PreX plan costs over twice the price of a regular NTUC travel insurance plan!

For those who have major health problems, you don’t have much of a choice. There’s no point buying a cheap normal insurance with no coverage for you at all because you definitely will not be able to claim medical expenses, evacuation costs or travel delays linked to a flare-up of your condition.

It is especially worth the money if your condition is either life-threatening or very expensive to treat overseas.

However, if you have a condition that’s pure suffering not immediately life-threatening, such as eczema, then it is your choice whether you want to spend more on Pre-Ex travel insurance for better coverage.

It’s important to look at the coverage limits if you’re seriously considering pre-existing travel insurance. Why? If you’re travelling to somewhere with really expensive healthcare, like Europe or the US, you might want to upgrade to the Enhanced PreX Prestige plan.

NTUC Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance Premiums and Coverage:

Is NTUC’s travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions any good? For one, NTUC PreX travel insurance covers COVID-19  while MSIG Pre-Ex and Etiqa Pre-Ex don’t cover you for COVID-19. So, if you want both pre-existing medical conditions and COVID-19 coverage in your travel insurance, NTUC Enhanced PreX is your only choice.

Even though NTUC Pre-Ex travel insurance offers you COVID-19 coverage, the downside is that they’ve lowered the medical benefits you get if you’re aged 70 and above.

For example, for those aged 70 and above NTUC PreX’s overseas medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage share a total claim limit of $500,000 for its basic plan tier (as opposed to up to $250,000 in overseas medical expenses and $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage for under 70s).

By comparison, MSIG Pre-Ex basic offers $250,000 / $50,000 medical (below 70 / above 70) and $1,000,000 evacuation regardless of age, while Etiqa Pre-Ex basic offers $200,000 medical and $1,000,000 evacuation and repatriation of mortal remains.

Otherwise, NTUC PreX’s miscellaneous trip cancellation and baggage delay benefits are pretty good.

4. NTUC Travel Insurance COVID-19 Coverage

Whether you buy an NTUC Travel Insurance Standard or an NTUC Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance plan, you’ll be relieved to know that all NTUC travel insurance plans automatically come with COVID-19 coverage.

You won’t find the COVID-19 coverage table in the usual NTUC travel insurance policy wording. Instead, there’s a separate  NTUC travel insurance COVID-19 policy wording  document that you should refer to.

NTUC travel insurance’s COVID-19 coverage and benefits:

Few of us really scrutinise the individual coverage limits on our travel insurance, trusting that they do cover the bare essentials.

The good news is that NTUC travel insurance’s COVID-19 extension is simple, and adequate. Take COVID-19 overseas medical coverage for example, NTUC offers $150,000 while MSIG’ basic plan offers $75,000. Then, there’s overseas COVID-19 quarantine cash allowance, which NTUC gives $100 per day, up to $1,400, but Etiqa’s basic plan offers $100 per day, up to $500 only.

5. NTUC Travel Insurance: Extreme Sports

Since our last review in July 2022, NTUC has updated its Travel Insurance policy to include more c ommon vacation activities like scuba diving and skiing. Nevertheless, extreme thrill seekers may want to go for a more lenient insurance provider such as  Direct Asia travel insurance , which properly covers extreme sports and martial arts.

To be honest, NTUC Travel Insurance is adequate if you’re looking to snorkel or join a guided tour group with a licensed outdoor adventure operator. But if you’re a hardcore adrenaline junkie…you might want to look around instead.

6. NTUC vs MSIG vs Etiqa Travel Insurance

If you’re considering NTUC travel insurance, you should be comparing it against established household insurance providers such as MSIG and Etiqa.

All 3 insurers, NTUC, MSIG, and Etiqa offer COVID-19 coverage in their travel insurance plans automatically. Other plans that include automatic COVID-19 coverage include Starr TraveLead Comprehensive, Bubblegum Travel Insurance, Singlife Travel Insurance and DBS Chubb Travel Insurance.

In terms of overseas medical expenses, MSIG offers comparable coverage to NTUC’s travel insurance. When it comes to other travel and logistics-related coverage such as trip cancellation and baggage loss, NTUC and MSIG travel insurance plans’ coverage are also pretty much on par.

All things considered, NTUC and MSIG travel insurance plans are shockingly similar and competitive. A key difference is emergency medical evacuation coverage for people aged 70 and over–NTUC travel insurance parks that under the overseas medical expense limit.

7. NTUC vs FWD Travel Insurance

When you pit NTUC travel insurance against one of the most popular “budget” travel insurance providers, FWD, you’ll realise that the travel insurance offerings are very similar and competitive.

Between NTUC travel insurance and FWD travel insurance, coverage is actually largely on par if you’re considering a basic travel insurance plan with COVID-19 coverage. However, FWD’s prices are lower even if you purchase the COVID-19 add-on.

8. NTUC Travel Insurance vs Other Travel Insurers

At a glance, here’s how NTUC Income’s travel insurance stacks up compared to the other major travel insurers in Singapore.

9. NTUC Travel Insurance Promo

Even though many Singaporeans probably don’t mind paying more for NTUC travel insurance just because it’s a household brand name, their travel insurance plans are actually pretty expensive.

However, with ongoing promotions like the current 45% discount promo, it can be value for money. All standard per-trip plans qualify for the promo.  For example, if you wanted to go temple-hopping for a week in Myanmar, the cheapest Classic plan would cost just $33.55 after the discount. Here are the premiums you’ll be paying with the current 45% discount promo:

In addition, Income is offering an additional 15% off Enhanced PreX per-trip plans with complimentary personal accident coverage for 6 months.

10. NTUC Travel Insurance Claim

If you follow insurance threads on forums or even talk to your friends about insurance claims over  kopi , you might have gotten wind of NTUC Income’s bad claims reputation .

Unfortunately, online forums such as Hardwarezone and Reddit are full of similar stories from users claiming that their NTUC insurance claims were slow, long-drawn-out and plagued with difficulties. According to the users’ NTUC claim experiences, there was a lot of emphasis on the need for original invoices to be submitted.

To be fair, between these nasty stories, you’ll also find users who managed to claim from NTUC insurance smoothly and received their cheques in the mail.

So, how do you make a claim? Your first port of call should be to get in touch with NTUC Income ASAP.

NTUC Travel Insurance Emergency hotline:  Call the NTUC emergency assistance hotline at +65 6788 6616

Here’s where it gets confusing. You have to identify the type of claim that you’re making and the “correct” way to submit it. Super important: all claims must be made within 30 days of the event or incident.

NTUC Travel insurance online claims:  Submit NTUC travel insurance claims online with supporting documents such as invoice, flight itinerary, police report, etc. through their website. You can do so for the following benefits:

Trip cancellation

Trip shortening

Travel delay

Baggage delay

Loss and damage of baggage or personal belongings

NTUC Hard copy claims:  For medical expenses, you need to fill in the NTUC travel insurance claim form and drop off the hard copy form with the supporting documents such as hospital bill, medical report, boarding pass, etc. at an NTUC Income branch.

NTUC Email claims:  For claims that do not involve travel inconveniences (see above) and medical expenses (see above), you’ll need to fill in the NTUC travel insurance claim form digitally, and email it together with your supporting documents to [email protected]. Include your travel policy number in the subject line.

NTUC Claims settlement time:  If there is no dispute, NTUC Income will settle your claims within 10 working days or longer during high-volume travel periods like school holidays.

11. Conclusion: Should I buy NTUC Travel Insurance?

NTUC travel insurance isn’t the absolute cheapest around, but their regular travel insurance plans are very  affordable and value for money  when there’s a 45% promotion going on.

However, just because it’s a brand name doesn’t mean that their coverage is the highest in town, especially when you compare it with newcomers like FWD. That’s not a problem for most travellers though, unless you’re going to a super expensive country or encounter some unusual scenario.

For most Singaporeans who just want to eat, chill and relax on holiday, NTUC travel insurance is more than adequate especially as it also provides COVID-19 coverage. However, daredevils should take note that it does not cover more thrilling activities like mountaineering and other extreme sports.

If you have a  pre-existing medical condition , NTUC Enhanced PreX is one of the very few travel insurance options suitable for you. It is pricey for sure, but probably worth the money if you have a life-threatening condition like asthma or heart disease. Make sure that the plan is sufficient to cover your overseas expenses and/or evacuation.

  • Income Travel Insurance: Is It a Good Deal?

Author - Anastassia Evlanova

  • Covers pre-existing conditions
  • Provides COVID-19 hospitalisation and evacuation coverage for certain countries
  • Expensive, especially annual plans
  • Low personal accident and medical benefits

Like many other insurers, NTUC Income offers three levels of travel insurance policies to cater to the tastes and budgets of all kinds of consumers. Ultimately, its plans tend to be priced quite close to the industry average and feature a medium degree of coverage in most areas with two main weak points. While Income's plans are priced fairly given the level of coverage provided, deal-seekers will not be particularly wowed. However, Income's travel insurance policies stand out because they are one of the only insurers in Singapore that cover pre-existing medical conditions.

NTUC Income Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

NTUC Income's travel insurance plans are best for travellers who aren't price sensitive and want coverage for their pre-existing conditions. You can choose from 3 tiers of plans for both the Enhanced and Enhanced PreX plans: Classic, Deluxe and Preferred for the standard plans and PreX Basic, PreX Superior & PreX Prestige for the pre-ex coverage plans. We found that Income's single trip plans generally cost 15-30% below average compared to its competition, while its annual plans cost between average to 20% above average. For those prices, the coverage is more competitive when it comes to travel inconvenience benefits (cancellations, delays, luggage loss), but sinks to below average overseas medical and personal accident coverage.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

NTUC Income offers the standard array of travel insurance benefits, ranging from medical and personal accident to trip inconvenience benefits like trip cancellation, postponement, delays and baggage loss. While most of the benefit limits are slightly below average, Income does boast above average limits for medical coverage in Singapore, trip delay and baggage loss coverage. However, these plans may fail to impress some types of travellers. For instance, Income's Basic plan provides average levels of coverage but won't impress budget travellers since its possible to find cheaper basic plans. The premium tier plan (Preferred) boasts above average coverage for a small amount of benefits, but won't stand out to travellers who equate premium-level plans with market beating coverage.

Income's annual policies cost above average for all 3 plans, so it won't be the best option for frequent travellers who are hoping to save on an annual travel insurance plan. However, as Income is the only insurer that is currently providing COVID-19 medical and hospitalisation coverage as long as you take the mandatory PCR test and test negative pre-departure and won't be travelling to a high-risk nation, it is the best option for travel during the COVID-19 period. Overall, Income's travel insurance plans are just enough for the average traveller and can provide sufficient additional coverage if that traveller needs coverage for pre-existing coverage. Otherwise, Income's Enhanced travel insurance plans may not sway budget travellers or travellers who like high levels of coverage.

Notable Exclusions

NTUC Income only covers pre-existing conditions if you purchase their Enhanced PreX plans. Besides that, the exclusions are pretty standard, including no cover for travelling for medical conditions, items lost or damaged while unattended, travelling to participate in professional or compensated sports, being a victim of war, riots, or rebellion and travelling against the advice of the Singapore Government.

NTUC Income Enhanced PreX Plans Travel Insurance

If you are not limited by budget and just want a plan that will give you ample protection for your pre-existing coverage, Income will be a good choice. However, budget travellers with pre-existing conditions may find Income to be an expensive option. We found that Income's PreX travel insurance plans cost around 3 times as much as Income's standard plans, making them quite expensive considering that Income isn't competitively priced to begin with. As one of the 3 insurers who provides extensive coverage for your pre-existing coverage, it settles somewhere in the middle, with MSIG's plans costing 10-22% less but Etiqa's Tiq plans costing around 15% more.

Besides the pricing, you should also consider the extent of Income's pre-existing coverage benefits. Its PreX plans also combine medical and emergency evacuation coverage under one limit, which brings down the value of these plans considerably (for instance, MSIG's PreX and Tiq's PreX plans have separate limits for medical and emergency evacuation, resulting in more coverage than Income). On the other hand, Income does let you claim for trip inconvenience (cancellations and postponement) due to your pre-existing conditions if you buy its Superior or Prestige plans, which can be a useful benefit for people who book their trips far in advance and have somewhat risky conditions. You should just be aware of the 50% copay you'll be responsible for should you use those benefits.

Income includes medical coverage for adventure and sports including skiing, scuba-diving, white water rafting and motorcycling. There's no golf coverage and no cover for extreme sports such as bungee jumping, skydiving and mountaineering.

Income lets you submit your claim online or via post. Both options require you to submit the proper documentation, which they list when you indicate the type of claim you want to submit. You should read the policy wording before buying the policy so you are aware of what you can and can't claim for.

It includes unique benefits such as overseas study interruption and safety measures against novel viruses. It’s customizable, offering varied plans to cater to unique travel needs.

While NTUC Travel Insurance boasts numerous advantages, there are some downsides to consider. One drawback is the potential for higher premiums compared to basic travel insurance plans offered by other providers. Despite its comprehensive coverage, the cost may be prohibitive for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, while NTUC Travel Insurance offers customization options, the process of selecting and tailoring a plan to individual needs may be complex or time-consuming for some customers. Another disadvantage is that certain exclusions or limitations within the policy may not be immediately apparent, requiring careful scrutiny of the terms and conditions to fully understand the extent of coverage.

NTUC Income adds Covid-19 insurance coverage for overseas travel

ntuc travel insurance online

(THE BUSINESS TIMES) - NTUC Income customers who buy its travel insurance will now receive Covid-19 coverage as well, for medical-related expenses while overseas.

Outbound travellers, departing Singapore, who are covered by Income's single-trip insurance will be protected for the first 90 days of each trip for Covid-19 related hospitalisation expenses of up to US$100,000 (S$133,900) while abroad.

They will also be covered for costs incurred for medical evacuation or repatriation of up to US$100,000, if necessary.

These Covid-19 benefits are automatically included in single-trip insurance plans purchased from Thursday (Nov 26) - including plans covering pre-existing conditions - and also for travel dates starting Thursday.

However, the Covid-19 benefits will be excluded from travel insurance for trips to countries that the World Health Organization deems as high risk for Covid-19 at the point of purchase.

Policyholders with existing annual travel insurance plans from Income can contact the insurer to find out about getting covered by these benefits for upcoming travel.

Fabian Ng, Income's general manager for consumer business, said that there are some individuals who will need to travel for necessary business-related and other essential matters, even as overseas travel is still restricted in general.

"Nevertheless, we urge everyone to take all necessary precautions when planning your travels as there are countries that are seeing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases or are still experiencing a high number of infections," Mr Ng added.

The Business Times (BT) reported last month that most travel insurance products do not cover Covid-19 related claims, although market leaders including Income had been reviewing some of their offerings.

Income told BT at the time that it may develop a product to cover inbound travellers to Singapore. On Thursday, an Income spokesperson said in response to BT's queries that the insurer is, at the moment, focusing on providing suitable Covid-19 cover for Singapore-based residents so that they can travel overseas with a greater peace of mind.

AXA Insurance currently offers Covid-19 travel cover for Scoot passengers on flights departing Singapore, and will soon be making such coverage available to all travellers regardless of the airline they fly, Julien Callard, its managing director, retail & health, told The Straits Times on Thursday.

Last week, Changi Airport Group and the Singapore Tourism Board announced that three insurance companies had each developed Covid-19 travel insurance plans for foreign visitors entering Singapore.

The three - AIG Asia Pacific Insurance, Chubb Insurance Singapore and HL Assurance - are providing at least S$30,000 in coverage for Covid-19 related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs for inbound travellers to the city-state.

Best Travel Insurance in Singapore with Covid-19 Coverage

Travelling during a pandemic can be stressful. get yourself appropriately covered with the best travel insurance plans before your trip..

by Tan Jia Hui

Make Home Care Personal To Your Loved One

Tan Jia Hui

As more countries open up, many Singaporeans are excitedly making holiday plans after close to three years. However, with all the uncertainty regarding outbreaks and government regulations, you may be facing turmoil on whether to book your flight and accommodations, especially if they are non-refundable.

The good news is, travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19-related disruptions. Many also provide compensation if you or your loved ones are diagnosed with Covid-19 before, during, or after the trip, so you can have peace of mind as you book your next vacation.

How to choose the best travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage

With the myriad of options available, how do you choose the best travel insurance with Covid-19 coverage?

Here are 5 key factors you should look out for to help you make an informed decision:

1. Price range

Depending on your destination country, travel duration, and a number of other factors, insurance premiums can range from tens of dollars to several hundreds. It is always best to find a balance between the cost of premium and the coverage you need.

2. Coverage

A typical travel insurance covers the following:

  • Overseas medical expenses, including treatment, evacuation and repatriation
  • Death and total and permanent disability (TPD)
  • Missing or lost baggage
  • Flight delays and cancellations
  • Trip cancellation

Pay extra attention to the coverage for overseas medical expenses. Most domestic insurance do not cover overseas expenses, which can easily cost upwards of thousands of dollars in the unfortunate event of a medical emergency. The cost of medical expenses may also vary greatly depending on your destination, so be sure to take that into consideration.

Depending on your itinerary and purpose of travel, you may choose to add extra coverage. For example, if you are an adrenaline junkie, consider getting a plan with adventure and sports coverage.

In the current pandemic situation, it is highly recommended to ensure your plan includes Covid-19 coverage. Covid-19 coverage typically includes the following benefits if you or your family members are diagnosed with Covid-19, or if you are affected by a related disruption:

  • Medical expenses
  • Hospitalisation allowance
  • Quarantine allowance
  • Trip postponement
  • Trip disruption
  • Trip curtailment
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation

3. Reliability of provider

Misinformation and fraud is rampant these days, and making sure your insurance provider is reliable is key to avoid being scammed. There are a few steps you can take to ensure the reliability of your insurance provider, such as checking that the agent is authorised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), requesting for a receipt, and ensuring the details on the policy document is accurate.

The safest option is to go with a reputable insurance provider that has a great track record so that you can have peace of mind and be confident that your insurance provider has your back should you face any issues overseas.

4. Ease of claims

Often, you may discover travel insurance plans with similar coverage but vastly different costs. While it is tempting to go with the more affordable option, make sure to check the fine print and reviews first. It could be that the company has a tedious and lengthy claim process or highly restrictive rules in the fine print that results in many claims being denied. These days, some insurers also provide a paperless claim process for a more seamless and fuss-free experience.

5. Additional features

Depending on the insurance plan and provider, there may be value-added services and features that you may find useful. For example, some insurance providers provide a 24/7 global medical assistance hotline to connect you with medical treatment and transportation while overseas. Others have an app where you can easily find your policy details, file and track claims, locate nearby medical facilities, police stations, or embassies, and even access medical translation functionalities.

If you find these additional features helpful, keep a look out for them when purchasing your travel insurance plan.

Supporting Your Family and Providing Care from Afar

Planning to take a holiday, but worried of leaving your elderly parents at home alone? Homage can help.

Apart from being able to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) like changing and cooking to nursing procedures, our Care Pros are also able to provide respite care to accompany your loved ones to their medical appointments or provide primary care in the interim.

Top 8 travel insurance plans with Covid-19 coverage

Depending on the country you are visiting, you may have to meet the mandatory Covid-19 travel insurance requirements to enter. For example, Singapore requires all inbound short-term visitors to have travel insurance with a minimum coverage of $30,000 for Covid-19-related medical expenses.

Here are the estimated premium and Covid-19 coverage of different travel insurance policies for a 7-days trip to most destinations worldwide:

Do note that the numbers above are for the most basic plan offered by each travel insurance provider. Many of them also offer plans with higher coverage, but of course have higher premiums as well.

1. FWD Premium

FWD offers affordable travel insurance plans with Covid-19 coverage. At $51.60 for a week-long trip to most destinations including the USA, FWD Premium has one of the lowest premiums in this list, but its coverage is also limited to only the bare minimum.

The Covid-19 insurance, which you have to purchase as an add-on to the FWD Premium plan, covers:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $200,000 while overseas or after returning to Singapore
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $50 per day for up to 14 consecutive days while overseas, $100 per day for up to 14 days after returning to Singapore
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $5,000 for non-refundable costs, for up to 30 days before the trip
  • Trip disruption : Up to $5,000
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation : Up to $200,000

The good thing about the FWD Premium travel insurance policy is that the medical expenses and hospitalisation allowance benefits are applicable for up to 14 days after your return, which not all plans offer.

2. Klook x MSIG Lite Plan

Another affordable travel insurance plan with Covid-19 coverage is the Klook x MSIG Lite Travel Insurance . At only $34.40 for a week-long trip to Thailand and up to $88 for a trip to the United States, its premium is comparable to FWD’s, but their Covid-19 coverage differs.

Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $100,000 while overseas
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day for up to 14 days while overseas, with maximum limit of $350
  • Quarantine allowance : $100 per day for up to 14 days while overseas, with maximum limit of $350
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $2,500
  • Trip curtailment : Up to $2,500
  • Evacuation and repatriation : Unlimited

While MSIG provides an overseas quarantine allowance, its payouts for hospitalisation allowance, medical expenses, as well as trip cancellations or disruptions, are lower compared to FWD.

Importantly, do take note that the Covid-19 cover will cease immediately after your return to Singapore, and the plan covers a trip duration of up to 30 days only, with no extension available.

If you are on a tight budget and don’t mind the basic coverage, consider getting this plan.

3. AIG Travel Guard Basic

For a comprehensive plan that already incoporates Covid-19 coverage, consider the  AIG Travel Guard Basic . Under this policy, a week-long trip to  Japan would incur a premium of $68.

  • Medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation  : Up to $50,000 for those below 70 years old, up to $25,000 for children and those above 70 years old
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day for up to 14 days while overseas
  • Travel cancellation : Up to $2,500
  • Travel postponement : Up to $500

While this plan offers decent coverage, it is missing a few elements, namely payouts for hospitalisation allowance, pre-departure changes to your trip, and even if you decide to return to Singapore early.

For better overall coverage, you have the option of upgrading to the Standard, Enhanced, or Supreme plans. However, do note that while these plans have higher compensation for the existing benefits, they do not provide additional benefits like hospitalisation allowance.

4. Allianz Single Trip Bronze

Rather than an add-on, Allianz incorporates Covid-19 coverage into its existing travel insurance plans. This means that while its medical expense coverage is significantly higher than the other plans above, it doesn’t provide payouts for travel delays, or allowance for hospitalisation and quarantine due to Covid-19.

You can get the Allianz Single Trip Bronze plan at $49 for a week-long trip to Thailand, or $112 if you are travelling to the USA.

  • Emergency medical and dental expenses : Up to $200,000 for those below 70 years old, up to $50,000 for those above 70 years old
  • Travel cancellation : Up to $5,000
  • Emergency transportation : Unlimited

For those who are looking for a more comprehensive plan, including personal accident and trip interruption coverage, Allianz also provides two other travel insurance plans: Silver and Platinum.

At the time of updating (9 Nov 2022), Allianz is also offering 12% off their travel insurance if you use the promo code “travel12”.

5. AXA SmartTraveller Essential

Since 1 February 2021, the AXA SmartTraveller  plans have been updated to better suit Singaporeans’ travel needs. The most basic plan, AXA SmartTraveller Essential , costs $157.02 for a week-long trip to most countries and includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $75,000 overseas, and up to $37,500 in Singapore
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day, up to a limit of $1,000
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day, up to a limit of $350 overseas and $350 in Singapore
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $1,000
  • Trip postponement : Up to $500
  • Trip curtailment or rearrangement : Up to $2,000

While the Covid-19 medical expense coverage for the Essential plan is considered low compared to the other plans on this list, AXA covers medical costs incurred within 90 days of your trip, which is quite generous duration-wise. For a higher coverage, you may want to consider upgrading to the Comprehensive plan, which covers up to $150,000 for Covid-19 medical treatment.

Another perk of the AXA SmartTraveller plan is their flexibility when it comes to claims for trip curtailment, which includes situations where a family member passes on due to Covid-19 or when there is a Covid-19 outbreak at the destination country.

6. NTUC Income Classic

For a week-long trip to most destinations, the NTUC Income Classic plan costs $149. On top of personal accident coverage, the plan includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Medical expenses : Up to $250,000 while overseas
  • Quarantine allowance : $100 per day while overseas, capped at $1,400
  • Trip cancellation : Up to $5,000
  • Trip curtailment : Up to $5,000
  • Trip disruption : Up to $2,000
  • Emergency transportation : Up to $150,000

All NTUC Income travel insurance policies bought online now include Covid-19 coverage for the first 90 days of each trip. However, do take note of the exclusions, as they do not cover travel inconveniences caused by border closures and government advisories.

For increased coverage, you have the option to choose NTUC Income’s Deluxe or Preferred travel insurance plans. Alternatively, if you are looking for a travel insurance policy that covers pre-existing conditions, NTUC Income is also one of the few providers that offers it. Their Enhanced PreX Travel Insurance starts from $194 for a week-long trip.

At the time of updating (9 November 2022), there is also an ongoing 40% promotion for all single-trip travel insurance policies bought online.

7. Sompo Essential

The Sompo Essential plan costs $129 for a week-long trip to most countries worldwide, and includes the following Covid-19 travel insurance coverage:

  • Overseas medical expenses : Up to $200,000
  • Medical expenses in Singapore : Up to $5,000
  • Hospitalisation allowance : $100 per day while overseas, capped at $3,000
  • Quarantine allowance : $50 per day while overseas, capped at $700
  • Trip postponement : Up to $5,000
  • Trip disruption : Up to $1,000
  • Emergency medical evacuation : Up to $500,000
  • Repatriation : Up to $30,000

In terms of breadth of coverage, the Sompo Essential plan has most of the Covid-19 benefits that other plans offer as well. Furthermore, the trip cancellation, postponement, and curtailment benefits apply not only when you contract Covid-19, but also when your travel companion(s) who are also insured by Sompo are infected.

However, do note that Sompo only covers Covid-19-related medical expenses for a period of up to 45 days (or until the maximum limit is reached), starting from your first day of treatment. Any medical expense incurred after 45 days will not be covered.

If you would like a more comprehensive coverage, there is the option to upgrade to the Sompo Superior plan.

At the time of updating (9 November 2022), Sompo is running a promotion for its single-trip Covid-19 insurance plans. Purchase your policies at 25% off till 4 December 2022.

8. Singlife Travel Lite

Singlife offers three plans with different levels of coverage: Travel Lite, Travel Plus, and Travel Prestige. The Singlife Travel Lite plan is the most affordable of the three, at $77.93 for a week-long trip to most destinations worldwide.

  • Medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation : Up to $250,000 while overseas
  • Medical expenses in Singapore : Up to $10,000
  • Trip cancellation : Up to  $5,000
  • Trip interruption : Up to $1,000

While the Singlife Travel Lite plan—the most basic of the three—has quite a low coverage, the benefits of the other two plans are comparable to the rest on the list and include overseas quarantine allowance of up to $2,000.

Additionally, MINDEF/MHA and POGIS policyholders can enjoy up to 46% off single-trip plans and 30% off multi-trip plans.

While we have provided a brief summary of the pros and cons of various travel insurance plans, remember to also read the fine print before making a decision to make sure the plan is right for you.

What to do if you get Covid-19 during or after your trip?

If you are diagnosed with Covid-19 or are affected by a related disruption during your trip, call your insurance provider immediately as they will be most familiar with the plan you have purchased and will be able to advise you accordingly. There may be steps you need to take within a fixed time frame (e.g. obtain an official quarantine order or a doctor’s letter) for the insurer to approve your claims, so you should call them once you are aware of the diagnosis or disruption. Most insurers should have a hotline that operates 24/7.

You will also have to submit your claim with supporting documents within the deadline (usually 30 days), so make sure that you always keep all receipts in an accessible place so you can submit claims on-the-go and do not have to wait till you are back in Singapore to process the claim.

11 Best Annual Travel Insurance from $270 You Can Buy Online (2022)

moneysmart

“ Annual travel insurance ? Isn’t that for frequent flyers, like those investment bankers and C-level executives?” you ask. Actually, I’d argue that it’s something that’s very worthwhile for many regular Singaporeans to buy.

We’re always whining about how we have no time to travel, we’re so burnt out from this rat race, life in Singapore is so boring, blah blah. But the fact is that Singaporeans are an extremely privileged bunch. According to stats, the national travel average is  5.2 times a year.

That makes us one of the most well-travelled nations in the world, side by side with those tall, handsome Scandinavians who are absolutely swimming in money and annual leave days. Well, then Miss Rona happened and turned our lives upside down.

After two years of living in a pandemic, the borders are finally opening up and if you’re packing those luggages for multiple trips in the coming year to finally quench your thirst for wanderlust, buying annual travel insurance will save you money  and it’ll also save you the mad scramble of buying insurance online just moments before your plane takes off.

1. Best Annual Travel Insurance Plans

“But I’m so busy travelling! Where got time to compare all the different annual travel insurance plans?” you wail.

Luckily for you, I’m paid to do just that. Here are the most affordable annual travel insurance plans that you can. After reviewing some 20 insurance providers in Singapore, I’ve shortlisted the best annual travel insurance plans for the average Singaporean traveller. A point to note: not all of the annual travel insurance plans include Covid-19 benefits.

2. Travelling to Multiple Countries – Buy Annual or Single Trip?

Regardless of how many countries you visit, it will still be considered a “single trip” as long as you’re leaving Singapore and returning to Singapore only once. When buying travel insurance, you’ll usually be asked to indicate a single country.

Which country should you indicate?

  • Select the country where you’ll be staying the longest
  • Indicate the furthest country you’ll be visiting
  • Find out your insurance company’s country list
  • Find out which countries travel insurance doesn’t cover
  • Are you going to be travelling regularly?

This makes sense because you’ll want to be covered at least in the country where you’re spending the most time.

If you’re going to be spending a week or more in Japan, for example, but also dropping by Bangkok or Hong Kong for a day to visit friends, you’ll still want to indicate that you’re buying travel insurance for Japan .

But what if you’re going to be spending most of your travel in KL, but making a short trip to Shanghai for a day meeting?

If you’re only going to be spending a day in China, and a month in Malaysia in the same trip, it might make sense at first to buy insurance for the whole month of travel, and indicate Malaysia as your destination country. This reduces your premiums significantly, since indicating China would mean you’d be paying more for coverage you don’t need.

However, if you can afford to spend a bit more, then it would be good to indicate the furthest country you’re visiting. After all, the last thing you want is for you to lose your baggage on that one day you’re in China, and then find out you’re not covered because you decided to save a few dollars.

3. Is Annual Trip Cheaper than Single Trip?

If you’re travelling so often that the pages of your passport looks like the scribblings of a child’s colouring book, it’s a given that buying  annual travel insurance  is cheaper in the long run.

For a simple comparison, one of the cheapest annual travel insurance plan with worldwide coverage from FWD costs you about  $345 a year .

This may seem like a hefty amount at first, but consider this: a single-trip travel insurance plan will cost about $76 a week  in the United States too.

That means buying single-trip insurance for 3 or 4 overseas trips in a year can cost you the same as an unlimited number of trips on an annual insurance plan.

Do note that the cost of yearly travel insurance depends mainly on the furthest country you’re planning to visit that year.

Naturally, restricting your coverage to countries in Asia, for example, would be cheaper that having coverage worldwide. This means that if you do have to travel outside Asia, you will need to think about buying a single-trip policy, which will not only add on to your costs, but also means adding on to your concerns before you travel.

4. Annual Travel Insurance is more convenient

Most annual travel insurance plans on the market today are for unlimited trips within a year-long timeframe, as long as each trip does not exceed 90 days .

This means, with an annual travel insurance plan, you can travel at any time without the hassle of finding the cheapest travel insurance each time you plan to leave the country.

5. Does Annual Travel Insurance have higher coverage?

Considering that an annual travel insurance policy covers you globally, you are covered wherever you travel to within this time frame.

However, once you drill down into the specific benefits for each travel inconvenience or emergency, an  annual travel insurance  technically does NOT provide more coverage than single-trip.

Let’s use NTUC Income’s travel insurance plan as an example. Here are the claim limits for the single and annual plans respectively:

It’s also important to note that you check for Covid-19 coverage before you purchase your annual travel insurance. While most insurance plans now include Covid-19 coverage, there are others that require you to purchase it as an add-on.

6. How To Choose Annual Travel Insurance?

There are a few factors you should consider before you take the plunge.  Annual travel insurance  is, after all, a year-long commitment and you can’t switch providers midway just because you buay song .

Here are some basics to know before you click “buy”.

Worldwide coverage: Always choose worldwide coverage so you’re not limited to specific regions when you travel. Even if you don’t have anything planned yet, you just never know where 2023 will take you.

Individual vs group plans: Generally annual travel insurance is a personal decision, but do note that some insurance providers give you better rates if you buy as a couple. (You don’t necessarily have to travel together.)

Basic vs upper-tier plan: With travel insurance, you don’t want to be too giam and just stick to the cheapest plan offered by the provider. Instead, consider both basic and mid-tier plans for the best mix of affordability and coverage.

Medical & emergency coverage: You might end up travelling to expensive countries, so make sure to buffer against high healthcare costs. Go for overseas medical expense limits of at least $300,000 if possible, and at least $1 million for emergency evacuation.

Covid-19 coverage:  While most single-trip insurance policies have expanded to offer Covid-19 benefits, the same cannot be said for the annual policies. Given that you’re paying for an entire year worth of coverage, do your due diligence in checking if the annual policy offers Covid-19 coverage.

Travel inconvenience coverage: You can get away with lower coverage for travel delays and such with single trip insurance, like if you’re going to Bali where the tourist infrastructure is strong and accommodation is plentiful. But you wouldn’t want to have to sleep at the airport in the US just because you can’t get enough compensation for a travel delay. So, pick only annual travel insurance with good coverage for travel inconvenience.

Adventure activities: Unlike single-trip plans where you can choose a plan that specifically covers such activities, your annual plan needs to cover anything you might end up doing in the course of the year. Even if you’re not very outdoorsy, your colleagues might talk you into learning to dive with them. You never know. So it’s best to be as unrestrictive as possible.

Comfort level: Finally, don’t commit to an annual travel insurance plan unless you’re REALLY comfortable with the policy wording, the claims process and the reputation of the brand (both for rendering emergency assistance and for settling claims).
