Roll and write your way across Paris and New York! You're taking your band on tour, but managing all these dates can be tricky. Each turn you will schedule shows on different dates until you have filled your map. Then you will draw a route to see how many clubs you can visit on your tour.

On Tour is a 20 minute route-building, roll-and-write board game with large, premium components that's good for 1 to 8 players (but can be played with as many people who have maps!). Each turn, dice determine which numbers you write while cards restrict the places you can visit. Players write simultaneously on their own maps, all using the same dice rolls and cards flips. Everyone is getting the same inputs, but how you choose to deal with them will determine your band's success.

Opportunities for bonus points, and a variable setup phase ensure every tour faces new challenges!

On Tour: Paris & New York

Standalone Sequel To On Tour!

A more strategic offering in the on tour lineup.

Your band is going on a 100-day summer tour. Flip cards to see what venues you can book. At the same time, roll dice to see what dates you can visit. Draw a route that lets you visit as many venues as possible. On Tour: Paris & New York is the standalone sequel to On Tour: USA & Europe. Both new maps keep the same base roll & write mechanic. But, each adds a new way to connect distant regions and score thematic bonus points. Designer Alban Viard usually designs heavy and complicated train and logistic games. He used that experience to add new depth to On Tour!

I like the game play, but the components are terrible. Only a deck of small cards in a tiny tuck box, and it's not even good quality.

No battery included. Reasonable for this price.

5 bucks, but darn it's ugly.

Good storage. 8 bucks.

There is no good way to store it, but it's only 8 bucks and it's cute.

On Tour Paris & New York is a brand-new standalone game based on the original On Tour design and featuring some new opportunities for travel!

Your goal is to plot the longest and most efficient route through these two magnificent cities where you are musicians in the 1920’s trying to play in as many jazz clubs as possible. Each turn two ten-sided dice are rolled to make two two-digit numbers that determine where you visit (a roll of 3 and 7 creates the numbers 37 and 73). All players write each of those numbers in a location on their map. The regions they can write in are restricted by cards turned up in the middle of the table.

Full disclosure: A review copy of On Tour: Paris and New York was provided by Allplay.

I’ve actually been thinking a lot about writing “revisit” reviews, where I go back to a game that I reviewed five years or so ago and see how it’s held up. Part of this is just that I think it’s necessary in the gaming space; a challenge that I run into is that a lot of games are kind of ephemeral, to me; they’re enjoyable when I first try them, but they fail to leave a lasting impression on me and despite my enjoyment of them, they slowly filter out of my collection. The other reason why is that I, somewhat selfishly, really want to play some older games again and I’d like to have a reason to do so. You know, “having fun” is apparently not sufficient justification. Love that for me. But one game that I had been itching to replay for a while was On Tour , a roll-and-write from BoardGameTables (now Allplay) that tasked players with adding numbers to locations all across the US (or Europe) and then trying to build a route that hits the most routes in ascending order. It always struck me as very challenging , but clever, and it had been a while. You can imagine my delight to find out that a new version of On Tour had just been released at PAX Unplugged, and now, here we are. We’re zeroing in and tilting a bit back in time; so let’s see what trouble we can get into in On Tour: Paris and New York!

In On Tour: Paris and New York, players find themselves touring at the height of jazz’s popularity, hitting clubs across two of the most happening cities in the western world. In Paris, players will have to navigate various parts of town to plan out their ideal route, including using riverboats to their advantage; in New York, players will have to find their way around the disconnected boroughs and use soloists to fill gaps in their band at any club they’re playing at. Naturally, there’s still the route-building you know and love from the original On Tour, but with a few new quirks for players. Will you be able to create the best possible jazz tour?

on tour paris and new york game

What’s New?

Player count differences.

  • Pros, Mehs, Cons

Surprisingly, not a ton! On Tour: Paris and New York play similarly to the base game , with some region-specific differences. I’ll cover both.

on tour paris and new york game

This is the closest to the standard game. Like the original, you’re moving around between a few regions, and if you place on the indicated number, you get to circle the location (making it count double if your subsequent route goes through there). Interestingly, each indicated number now corresponds to two possible spots, making it possible for you to really leverage your luck, there.

Additionally, the North and South are disconnected save for some riverboats that make the crossing between them. As your route moves, it may move from any riverboat location to any other riverboat location. Record the difference between the two letters (A->C or C->A, for instance, is 2 points), and total the extra bonus points you get for using the riverboats, adding them to your final score. Otherwise, play normally!

on tour paris and new york game

New York plays more differently than Paris. For one, you don’t do the standard setup; you just start playing the game. Each card indicates one or more boroughs, with special consideration given to one of them via a Soloist. If you add a number to the indicated borough, add the Soloist’s icon to the space, as well. At the end of the game, as you make your route, cross off the leftmost unmarked box for a given Soloist type as your route takes you through their squares. You gain a bonus for the highest crossed-off number of each Soloist type, in addition to your score.

You may also notice that, like Paris, the boroughs aren’t necessarily connected. Queens and Brooklyn are, granted, but Staten Island is off doing its own thing way at the bottom of the map. To connect them, you’ll need to build Ferry Routes. Some locations are “landlocked” (white backgrounds within the circle) and others are not (grey background within the circle). To build a Ferry Route, either wait for a Ferry card to be revealed or for the three cards to all have the same borough on them (among the other boroughs that can be on the card). You may then connect any two non-landlocked locations with a Ferry Route and use that route at the end of the game. When you add a Ferry Route, you don’t add any numbers.

Finally, should your route take you on a fully scenic tour of New York City (by visiting all five boroughs), you gain an additional 7 points.

on tour paris and new york game

Like the original game, you can effectively play this from one person to a hundred with no effective changes. You’re playing on your own board without interacting with anyone, really. The one thing that can change is on the New York map, as it’s possible to build Ferry routes in lieu of placing numbers. This means with larger player counts, it’s somewhat more likely that a player may end the game prematurely (since they took numbers when other players would have taken Ferry routes). I guess that’s something to watch out for, but beyond that, there’s no major player count differences. I tend to prefer lower player counts when I play, but that’s mostly just me trying to account for potential analysis paralysis among players, rather than any other feature of the game.

on tour paris and new york game

  • More generally, I like trying to create a simple path and then adding branches that reconnect back to the main pathway; this lets you have a stable way to score points without adding too much risk. I usually call this “densification”, since you’re just trying to build a path that’s already stable and then add branching offshoots that reconnect back. This is an ideal outcome that almost never works . You leave room for high numbers? You get low numbers. You leave room for both? You just get the same number that you placed six turns ago. The dice are fickle and cruel, and you should try to have some plan while acknowledging that man plans and On Tour laughs. That said, coming up with at least some semblance of a stable path can be helpful, especially since you can use riverboats or Ferry Routes to reconfigure your routes a bit.
  • [Paris] Keep in mind that you can take the riverboats in any order, so you can try and set yourself up for a bunch of points that way. I used this to salvage an otherwise terrible game by getting 15 points off of just riverboats, for instance. You don’t need to use them from left-to-right; you can go out to in or any random combination of locations. Try to maximize the points you’re getting, though! They’re easy points if your route is amenable to it.
  • [Paris] Fight the temptation to always place the number so you can circle it; you need to think about the long-term optimization of your route. I forgot in one game I played and just absentmindedly placed the number and circled it for the first couple turns. Suffice it to say, that game didn’t go incredibly for me. If you can make the circled spots work, they’re worth effectively double points, but just adding them to add them will quickly turn your map into a mess, usually. Sometimes it won’t! That’s dice.
  • [Paris] There are a lot of locations with a lot of pathways in and out. That can be helpful, but make sure you’re not accidentally backing yourself into a corner. You want to keep a rough idea of your path during the game, just so you don’t, say, accidentally misplace a number and cut off a third of the map without realizing that you’ve done that until five or so turns later. That happened to a guy I know. He didn’t like it.
  • [New York] You must think of how you’re going to place your Ferries. Granted, you can be somewhat flexible on this front until it’s time to place them, but don’t wait until the end of the game! You’ll probably need at least three if you want to hit every borough, but four or five can really offer you some flexibility. You can even use them to ferry around to other parts of a borough to fill in a route that you might have messed up. Don’t necessarily just rely on all of the Ferry Route cards showing up at the end of the game.
  • [New York] It’s almost always worth hitting every borough, if you can. It’s a bonus 7 points, and that usually means that your route is pretty long and pretty viable as a result. It’s also nice to have some semblance of a goal; On Tour can be tough if you’re playing it without a direction of some kind.
  • [New York] Soloists are very valuable . If you manage to make a long route with enough Soloists, you can get an extra 30 or 40 points, which is ridiculous. I think it’s a bit hard to plan for a route that specifically aims for getting 16 points from specific Soloists (or maybe that’s just high-level strategy that’s beyond me, to some degree), but the more Soloists you can have on your route, the better off you will likely be.

Pros, Mehs, and Cons

on tour paris and new york game

  • I really like the increasing tension and dread of On Tour, and that is still very much present in Paris and New York. There’s an inflection point in every game of On Tour where you shift from being excited about all the possibilities available to you to suddenly feeling dread about all the mistakes you’ve made over the course of your brief existence. It’s like your mid-20s in real life. Existential horror aside, it’s pretty funny. I’ve never known exactly when the game shifts, for me, but I’ve always known that I was in the former state and am now in the latter state as we approach the end of the game and my Ideal Perfect Route is immediately going into the garbage.
  • I guess if you backed the game or if you buy the promo it comes with some big gold sparkly dice? They’re great. They’re extremely sparkly . You might be able to see them in the photos. I love them, though I wish the glitter were more distributed throughout each of the dice. This is a very small complaint.
  • More generally, though, the big d10s that come with the game are particularly nice. There’s something very appealing about weighty, giant, clunky dice. It’s part of why I liked Tomatomato so much (among other reasons). The On Tour dice are delightfully pleasant to roll and very clear about what numbers have been rolled. Makes everything a lot easier.
  • I like that there’s a vertical board and a horizontal board. I just think that’s nice that they took the two aspect ratios and tried something different with each of them!
  • The new features add a lot to the game, which I appreciate! They don’t take away from the original On Tour, though; they’re just different. A solid standalone. I don’t think that this, for instance, makes me never want to play On Tour again. On Tour is simpler (and to that end, more streamlined). I think you can learn Paris pretty easily before the more-complex-but-higher-scoring New York, granted, but they definitely represent a slight increase in complexity from the original On Tour. There’s a place for both in my collection.
  • The game plays pretty quickly, once you get used to it. You’re really just making bad decisions, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned over my years, it’s that I know how to do that pretty fast. Granted, you might want to plan a bit more early in the game so that you don’t wall yourself off into a world of nightmares, but you’re entitled to live your own life.
  • Pretty transportable, which is always a plus! The standard box size for these games (On Tour: Paris and New York, Factory Funner, Bear Raid, Kabuto Sumo, others like that) is a very high-utility size, which is great. I can fit a few in a backpack easily. They’re definitely dense games (the box, relative to its size, is rather heavy), but that’s okay. I don’t often think too much about physical game weight.
  • I really like the art style. It’s so vibrant! Plus, thematically, jazz is an amazing theme and this is a fun time for a game to take place, so, it all works super well together. The color scheme is very pleasant as well (even if it causes me some consternation on the New York map).
  • I also like the idea that each new location adds its own unique quirks to On Tour; it seems like there’s a lot of places one could go next. There are a lot of really good location-based roll-and-write series, and I love how all of them try to change things up from map to map, be it MetroX, Let’s Make a Bus Route / Get on Board, Next Station: London, or On Tour. I think it’s very fun to see how they incorporate new maps into how they structure their games. I’m excited to see how On Tour incorporates new features into theirs; I’d love to see some map that’s just a sad indie band touring the Pacific Northwest or something.
  • I appreciate that there’s no real practical max number of players, either, and that it can be played remotely, if necessary. I ran a completely online game of it while I was taking the photos (which I still need to edit, now that I’m thinking about it) for this review, which was fun. It definitely added some complexity as I was playing both games at the same time, but that’s a different problem. I really like that publishers and designers have been putting more effort into thinking about how games play remotely (when they’re not using BGA or Tabletopia or something); it’s better to make your games more accessible to a wider audience.
  • There’s not really a good way to indicate that you have two Ferry Routes that overlap each other, to some degree, which is unfortunate. I would just assume that you should try to keep them perpendicular where possible, but sometimes I have to get … creative with my Ferry Routes, and it would be nice to have a better way to indicate that on the board. Maybe use different line styles? I’m hoping to test this later.
  • I’m also surprised that there’s not a symbol on the landlocked spaces on the New York map; just altering the opacity of the circle wasn’t immediately clear to us. This really threw me off for a bit in the first game; I think a tiny lock or a X or a “No Ferry” symbol or something by the few landlocked spaces would be helpful.
  • The actual breakdown of which Soloists to go after tends to be an afterthought, for me; I almost always focus on the longest path that hits Soloists without necessarily prioritizing going after a Violinist, for instance. I imagine that a truly skilled player can make it work in a way that I didn’t expect, but it does feel a bit disappointing that I don’t really need to put that much effort into planning which Soloists go where in a given game. It would be interesting if there were some more guiding hand that determined which ones go where beyond “you draw what you’ve been dealt”.
  • Completely understand why the boards fold, but having a location directly on the crease is frustrating, at best. This drives me a little up the wall, just because I’m always writing on that spot and my number looks terrible (don’t look too closely at the photography) because I can’t get a good angle on the spot to write the number correctly. It makes me the gentlest level of self-conscious, I suppose.
  • I don’t really have any New York geography internalized, so it would be superb if the various boroughs were labelled, especially since the colors are fairly similar. It’s better after a few plays, but I kept getting The Bronx and Brooklyn confused with Queens. Manhattan and Staten Island I can mostly figure out, I suppose, but the other three are completely opaque and the geography matters . It’s a bit easier with the other maps since they’re regionally-divided (and I functionally understand that West is on the left [plus, the diagram helps]). Just having the borough names near their geographic area would help me a lot.

Overall: 8.25 / 10

on tour paris and new york game

Overall, I think On Tour: Paris and New York is another great entry in the On Tour series! I actually really enjoyed getting to come back and relearn some of On Tour’s mechanics and strategy, even if that meant having to stomach a catastrophe of my own creation when my routes inevitably got messed up by a mixture of bad luck and worse planning. Thematically, I find this set super appealing; the fun of being part of a roaming jazz band hitting up various clubs in a major city is a delightful thematic spin on the big touring bands that featured in the original game. I think it’ll even fit in the base game box, since I don’t think I ended up springing for the extra eight boards, but that’s a different question for another time. I actually appreciate this smaller box quite a bit; it’s easy enough to slide one of these into my backpack (and I like this a lot as one of Allplay’s standard box sizes). There are a few things I don’t love, granted, but those are largely just quirks of design choices. I love the color scheme, for instance, but I find that the colors on the New York map are a bit too similar, and that plus a bad sense of New York geography often means that I get confused when I’m trying to figure out which borough is which. Similarly, I get that the boards have to fold, but having a location on the fold means that every game I just have one number that was written terribly because I couldn’t get it down (due to the split in the middle of the location). Things like that. Those are, granted, not huge structural problems with the game, but they do make some of the games a bit annoying, which is unfortunate. Largely the biggest problems I have, though, so your mileage may vary on how much that impacts your enjoyment of the game. It doesn’t really knock mine down, too much, so it was nice getting to try a new spin on On Tour, and playing this has made me excited to see where they take the game next. If you’re a fan of On Tour and want to try some additional complexity, you’re looking to get into a roll-and-write with some good strategy to it, or you just like making big bets that may or may not pay off, I’d recommend trying out On Tour: Paris and New York! I’ve really been enjoying it.

Recently viewed, grading system.

Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW (NM)" means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition.

Perfect. Brand new.

Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible. Board & war games in this condition will show very little to no wear and are considered to be punched unless the condition note says unpunched.

Excellent. Lightly used, but almost like new. May show very small spine creases or slight corner wear. Absolutely no tears and no marks, a collectible condition.

Very Good. Used. May have medium-sized creases, corner dings, minor tears or scuff marks, small stains, etc. Complete and very useable.

Very well used, but complete and useable. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, etc.

  • Boxed items are listed as "code/code" where the first code represents the box, and the second code describes the contents. When only one condition is listed, then the box and contents are in the same condition.
  • A "plus" sign indicates that an item is close to the next highest condition. Example, EX+ is an item between Excellent and Near Mint condition. A "minus" sign indicates the opposite.
  • Major defects and/or missing components are noted separately.
  • Boardgame counters are punched, unless noted. Due to the nature of loose counters, if a game is unplayable it may be returned for a refund of the purchase price.
  • In most cases, boxed games and box sets do not come with dice.
  • The cardboard backing of miniature packs is not graded. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "card worn."
  • Flat trays for SPI games are not graded, and have the usual problems. If excessively worn, they will be marked as "tray worn."
  • Remainder Mark - A remainder mark is usually a small black line or dot written with a felt tip pen or Sharpie on the top, bottom, side page edges and sometimes on the UPC symbol on the back of the book. Publishers use these marks when books are returned to them.

If you have any questions or comments regarding grading or anything else, please send e-mail to [email protected] .

On Tour Paris and New York

On Tour Paris & New York is a brand-new standalone game based on the original On Tour design and featuring some new opportunities for travel!

Description

Your goal is to plot the longest and most efficient route through these two magnificent cities where you are musicians in the 1920's trying to play in as many jazz clubs as possible. Each turn two ten-sided dice are rolled to make two two-digit numbers that determine where you visit (a roll of 3 and 7 creates the numbers 37 and 73). All players write each of those numbers in a location on their map. The regions they can write in are restricted by cards turned up in the middle of the table.

New abilities to take riverboats and ferries will help you tour the city and become a jazz legend.

At the end of the game, each player draws a route on their map, starting with a low number and visiting adjacent locations with higher and higher numbers. Players get a point for every venue they visit.

Product description

Here's How You Can Hang Out Inside the Team USA House at the Paris Olympics

For the very first time, the team usa house will be open to the public this summer..

Published on 4/18/2024 at 9:43 AM

A rendering of Team USA House at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are quickly approaching. The upcoming Olympic Games will take place between Friday, July 26, 2024 and Sunday, August 11, 2024, and the Paralympic Games will begin just a few weeks later, scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, 2024 through Sunday, September 8, 2024.

This year, something exciting will be happening in Paris that has never happened at any Olympics prior: The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has partnered with On Location, the official hospitality provider of the Paris Olympics, to offer single-day passes to Team USA House Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024.

That’s right. For the first time ever, Team USA House, which will be located in the historic Palais Brongniart in Paris’ second arrondissement, will be open to the public. On Location will be offering single-day tickets to the venue for $346 during the Olympic Games, and $159 during the Paralympic Games. You can purchase tickets for the single-day passes through the On Location website . This is also the first time ever that the Team USA House will be operating during the Paralympics.

A rendering of the 2024 Team USA House at the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, France.

So, beyond the excitement of being able to enter an Olympic venue previously closed off to the general population, what are the other benefits to purchasing tickets to Team USA House? For one, it's a great way to get involved in the games if you don't already have  tickets to an Olympics sporting event.

But, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Not only will you get to hang out inside of a building built back under Napoleon's reign, you'll also get to rub elbows with Team USA athletes. Team USA House is also going to be a major center of activities. Team USA House will also feature:

  • A main stage for medal celebrations, panels, and athlete appearances
  • All-day dining options including American favorites and a rotating selection of international cuisines, plus two bars, and a dozen large monitors to watch Team USA
  • An official Team USA Shop that will have exclusive Team USA and LA28 merchandise from Nike, Ralph Lauren, Oakley, New Era, Mitchell and Ness, and Fanatics, and will include custom Team USA and Paris 2024 pins,
  • Exclusive programming including special guest athlete appearances, daily trivia games, and theme nights

"The first-ever Team USA House during the Paralympic Games reaffirms our continued commitment to elevate the Paralympics for athletes, fans and the entire Olympic and Paralympic community in the United States," said Katie Bynum Aznavorian, chief strategy & growth officer at the USOPC, in a statement. "Team USA House at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris will provide fans with an unprecedented opportunity to cheer on U.S. athletes, a front-row seat to athlete celebrations and a once-in-lifetime experience of celebrating Team USA in Paris."

The Team USA House news announcement coincides with a key milestone ahead of the Games: Wednesday marks 100 days until the opening ceremonies in Paris. The State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs marked the occasion by reminding Americans planning to travel to the Olympics to check their passport expiration date as soon as possible so that they are able to make the trip. Even with the improved passport processing times , it takes a while!

A Soccer Team Stopped Charging for Tickets. Should Others Do the Same?

When Paris F.C. made its tickets free, it began an experiment into the connection between fans and teams, and posed a question about the value of big crowds to televised sports.

Fan crowd a three-tiered grandstand and wave blue and white flags and banners.

By Rory Smith

Reporting from Paris

Neither Paris F.C. nor St.-Étienne will have much reason to remember the game fondly. There was, really, precious little to remember at all: no goals, few shots, little drama — a drab, rain-sodden stalemate between the French capital’s third-most successful soccer team and the country’s sleepiest giant.

That was on the field. Off it, the 17,000 or so fans in attendance can consider themselves part of a philosophical exercise that might play a role in shaping the future of the world’s most popular sport.

Last November, Paris F.C. became home to an unlikely revolution by announcing that it was doing away with ticket prices for the rest of the season. There were a couple of exceptions: a nominal fee for fans supporting the visiting team, and market rates for those using hospitality suites.

Everyone else, however, could come to the Stade Charléty — the compact stadium that Paris F.C. rents from the city government — free.

In doing so, the club began what amounts to a live-action experiment examining some of the most profound issues affecting sports in the digital age: the relationship between cost and value; the connection between fans and their local teams; and, most important, what it is to attend an event at a time when sports are just another arm of the entertainment industry.

At Paris F.C., the thinking was more pragmatic than high-minded. Parisian soccer is dominated by Paris St.-Germain, nowadays France’s perennial champion. Paris F.C., on the other hand, is an unremarkable second-division side playing in a rented home, its history not even a match for Red Star, traditionally the city’s second team.

By opening its doors, the club believed it might lift attendances, attract families and nurture some long-term loyalty. But it was just as concerned with telling people it was there. “It was a kind of marketing strategy,” Fabrice Herrault, the club’s general manager, said.

“We have to be different to stand out in Greater Paris,” he noted. “It was a good opportunity to talk about Paris F.C.”

Months later, most metrics suggest the gambit has worked. Crowds are up by more than a third. Games held at times appealing for school-age children have been the best attended, indicating that the club is succeeding in attracting a younger demographic.

Paris F.C.’s tickets were never desperately expensive — Aymeric Pinto, a fan who has been attending for a decade, said that attendees had been paying the equivalent of only about $6, but abolishing even that shallow barrier has made a noticeable difference.

The game against St.-Étienne attracted about 17,000 (mostly) nonpaying spectators. That figure was a high-water mark for the experiment but also a little misleading: In the 1970s, St.-Étienne was France’s pre-eminent team, and it has the sizable fan base to match.

Inside the stadium, the number of green St.-Étienne jerseys betrayed that fact. Even in areas nominally reserved for home fans, it was obvious that many had come to support the visitors. “Look around,” said Thomas Ferrier, his St.-Étienne shirt just visible beneath his raincoat. “The whole place is green.”

Still, for Paris F.C., the overall pattern has been encouraging. The free-ticket strategy will cost the club about $1 million — a combination of lost revenue and added spending on security and staff — but the company line, and supporters’ feedback, is that it has been worth it.

“It’s a good thing for the club,” Mr. Pinto said. “It’s hard to attract a crowd in Paris.”

The positive results align with the experience of Fortuna Düsseldorf, a German second-division club that pioneered the free-ticket approach. Last year, Fortuna announced that it would allow fans into a handful of games for free , the start of a five-year pilot program — financed by sponsorship agreements — that could lead to the abolition of ticket fees altogether.

Fortuna has already staged two of the three free games it planned for the pilot phase. For the first, the club said it received so many requests it could have filled its 52,000-seat stadium twice. For the second, it could have done so three times. More significant, though, is the impact outside of those games.

“Our average attendance has gone from 27,000 to 33,000,” said Alexander Jobst, the club’s chief executive. “Our merchandise sales are up by 50 percent. Our sponsorship revenue is up 50 percent. We have reached a record number of club members.”

Correlation, of course, is not causation — “It is hard to link it with absolute certainty to the free games,” Mr. Jobst said — but there is no other particularly compelling explanation. Fortuna traditionally bounces around between Germany’s first and second tiers; it retains hope of winning promotion this season. Yet it is attracting more fans than when it won the second division with ease in 2018.

Fortuna’s rationale was more ideological than Paris F.C.’s. Like all German soccer teams, Fortuna is owned by its members, and the club saw allowing fans in for free as a way to deepen its connection to its city and to ensure that nobody was priced out of attending a game.

But that does not mean there was not a quid pro quo at play, too. Fortuna also rents its city-owned stadium. The club’s hope was that, by embarking on what it saw as a distinctly “social concept,” it might persuade the local government to spend a little money updating the facility.

While both initiatives, then, have their roots in cold economics — and while both clubs say the schemes should not be read as blueprints for the future of sports more broadly — they have both served as petri dishes for more profound issues.

The most obvious is the extent to which the cost of an item affects its intrinsic worth. In the context of sports, that has always boiled down to the assumption that fans are more likely to turn up to an event if they have already paid to go, and more likely still if they have paid a meaningful amount. Tickets that cost nothing, by contrast, are inherently disposable.

Fortuna Düsseldorf has not found that to be an issue. “We had fewer no-shows with the free games than we do with normal ones,” Mr. Jobst said.

The picture in Paris is more complex. “Among fans, we talk a lot about the ‘free ticket effect,’” said Rayan Benabderrahmane, a relatively new Paris F.C. fan who recanted his loyalty to Paris St.-Germain a couple of years ago.

“You see people arriving late, leaving early, or sometimes not coming at all,” he noted. “A lot of people do think it isn’t really their club, and they haven’t paid, so if the weather is bad, it doesn’t matter.”

The more significant question may be how the fans watching a game inside a stadium should be categorized. Are they observers of a spectacle, and therefore required to pay for the privilege? Or is it time to change that categorization: Are fans, the ones watching in the stadium, actually part of the production?

Soccer — like all sports — is now largely a television business. Teams are financed by money from broadcasting deals. Start times are rearranged to suit television viewers. Referees’ decisions are reviewed by officials in a remote studio.

And if soccer is now content, then part of that content — the chorus, the texture, the soundtrack, the spectacle — is provided by the fans.

“Since the pandemic, there has been a growing awareness of the role of spectators in the ‘production’ of sporting events,” said Luc Arrondel, a professor at the Paris School of Economics. He pointed out that there was broad consensus in academic literature that home-field advantage is real, and that the single most salient factor in its existence is the effect of a partisan crowd.

But soccer’s metamorphosis into a televisual event gives fans a financial role, too, Professor Arrondel said. “The presence of supporters in the stadium increases the desirability of the television product, and therefore, possibly, the value of television rights,” he noted.

The case could be made, then, that clubs should go even further than Paris F.C. and Fortuna Düsseldorf have done. According to a paper coauthored by Professor Arrondel, in some cases — for teams receiving a certain amount of commercial and broadcast income — there is an argument for incentivizing the presence of the most ardent fans: not just allowing them in free, but possibly even paying them to attend.

As things stand, that remains some way off. Fortuna’s project remains in a trial phase. Paris F.C. will “take stock” of its policy at the end of the season, Mr. Herrault said. That review will not, most likely, feature even the slightest detail of what happened on the field against St.-Étienne. The size of the crowd that saw the game, though, all of those extras in the production, may well have ramifications beyond the Stade Charléty.

We don’t yet know who will medal in the  2024 Paris Olympics , but we do know exactly what Team USA athletes will be wearing on the winners' podium.

Nike has revealed the official medal ceremony looks they created for Team USA for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and we got the first look April 17 on TODAY.

The brand also notes that the “angled, perforated ventilation on the chest is a nod to the classic Nike Windrunner design.”

Athletes will also wear slim-fitting pants with tapered legs made from the same stretchy material as the jacket.

Nike notes that the pants “come with a stretch waist band, built in belt, and zippered pockets for secure storage.”

Athletes will also wear Nike Air Max Dn shoes, which feature air-filled tubes in the soles “to provide greater cushioning, while styled for comfort, utility and versatility,” according to Nike.

Team USA medalists will be dressed head-to-toe in Nike gear apart from the medals themselves. This year’s Olympic and Paralympic medals have a special connection to France, and are  made from actual scraps of original iron  from the Eiffel Tower.

Nike also created its first breakdancing shoe, the Nike Jam, in connection with the 2024 Olympics, in honor of breakdancing  making its Olympic debut  in Paris this year,  according to Complex .

Breakdancing is the only completely new sport coming to the Games this year, although three sports that made their Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020 — surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing — will be returning in Paris.

NEW YORK — In 100 days, Paris will kick off the 2024 Summer Olympic Games with the opening ceremony. As the host city enters the final stretch of preparations, much has yet to be finalized.

The plan for an ambitious opening ceremony on July 26 — in which athletes float down the iconic Seine River bisecting the city — is set to be the first held outside a stadium, although it could move locations for security reasons. And only a small fraction of athletes have found out whether they are headed to Paris.

Buzz around the Games grew louder in New York this week, where U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee officials and athlete hopefuls gathered to talk about how they're preparing during the countdown.

Here are some other takeaways from the Team USA media summit.

Athletes prepare for a moment that may never come

Hopefuls spend years training but most won't know until after qualifying events — for some, in the final few weeks before Paris — whether they've secured their spot on the Olympic team. Andrew Capobianco, a diver who competed at the Tokyo Games in 2021 is trying not to focus on the potential heartbreak.

"I probably would have been more overwhelmed if it was maybe before my first one," he said. "But I guess, for me, it's just — stick with the plan and train hard every day."

For some veterans, unexpected hurdles since past appearances have forced a reset of regimens and time-intensive training. A year after Tokyo gold medalist gymnast Sunisa "Suni" Lee learned she had two types of kidney diseases, she says she is now "in remission."

"I'm feeling really good," she said. "We have it under control now and like, now I know what to do and right medicine to take in order to keep going."

To get her health sorted out, she took a break from her sport, which meant time spent regaining the strength she had lost. "I couldn't do any exercising and I couldn't even get out of bed most days," she said.

She and Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey are among those hoping to clinch a spot in Paris.

Athletes harped on their need for consistency in their workouts, diets and sleep in the run-up to the Games. But that's easier said than done when most athletes don't make a living in their sport. Beyond the high-level competitions, many athletes hold day jobs and side gigs.

But this year, some athletes will see a return on their investment with a new opportunity to cash in. Each track and field gold medalist will be awarded $50,000 by the sport's governing body World Athletics — the first time an international federation has offered prize money to Olympic medalists.

An emphasis on security

Athletes who say pandemic restrictions dampened their experiences in Tokyo and Beijing are looking forward to having back family, friends and fanfare.

This year, officials said they're imposing no COVID restrictions or vaccination requirements for American athletes, beyond the normal health protocols for things like flu.

Officials say security is top of mind this year. Paris has been the target of terror attacks in the past. Heightening safety fears, these Games will happen against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine , as well as Israel at war in Gaza fighting Hamas.

USOPC Chief of Security Nicole Deal says there are no current specific threats against American athletes, but that security will be comprehensive and tight. Athletes, who will be competing in events across France, will get security briefings and have access to apps with security alerts, she added.

A big push for gender equality

The International Olympic Committee has made an effort to make the Games more inclusive. As of Monday, only about 15% of the Team USA roster has been named, USOPC officials said. But already the IOC has touted unprecedented achievements in gender equality for the 2024 games. Paris will see an even split of male and female participants, officials said.

Meanwhile, yet another stir over athlete uniforms has renewed charges of prevailing double standards. Nike's unveiling of this year's U.S. women's track and field uniforms reignited criticism over designs that sexualize female athletes. Fans and athletes panned the high-cut bodysuit.

Gold medalist pole vaulter Katie Moon expressed concern for the revealing silhouette but clarified that the design is just one of the uniform options available to women. During the Tokyo Games, German gymnasts traded their bikini-cut leotards in favor of long-legged unitards , in a statement about women athletes choosing what they're comfortable in.

Why Nike's new Olympic track uniform for women is stirring controversy

Criticizing an outfit design that other athletes may prefer is not the answer, Moon said in a social media post. "The point is we DO have the choice of what to wear, and whether we feel the best in a potato sack or a bathing suit during competitions, we should support the autonomy."

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the USOPC, addressed the issue on Monday, saying she supports athletes having attire options.

"We want to make sure athletes have choices that they're comfortable in," she told reporters.

In an institution known for its curveballs as much as tradition, one thing is certain. Asked about pregame superstitions on a panel of female athletes, soccer player Emily Sonnett said banana pancakes are her "must-have."

"If you don't have bananas that day, what are you gonna do?" asked her teammate Crystal Dunn.

"But we always have bananas," Sonnett retorted.

Palaces, superyachts and chauffeurs: How the super rich will watch the 2024 Paris Olympics

T his summer, crowds are expected to flock to Paris for the summer Olympic games. Prices for hotel rooms are likely to skyrocket. Tickets for even the lesser events will be eagerly sought. And almost every aspect of visiting the French capital is likely to become trop cher for ordinary travelers.

For some elite spenders, however, nothing is too expensive.

Olympic luxury packages are already on sale, offering exclusive access to the sporting spectacle, alongside very upscale travel and accommodation experiences. The lucky few for whom expense is no object can expect to pay north of several hundred thousand dollars for a ringside glimpse of the games.

For instance, a North American family of five traveling to Paris for the Olympics with experiential travel company The GR8 Experience can expect to spend between $250,000 and $380,000, depending on the five-star hotel or luxury rental they chose.

These six-figure sums include 11 nights accommodation, premium seats for the opening ceremony and tickets to sports such as swimming, water polo, diving, beach volleyball, track and field and soccer. They will also enjoy VIP transport services around Paris and dedicated hosts for their time in the city.

As the prices above show, the sports tourism industry is big bucks: in 2022 it was worth nearly $588 billion , and it is expected to grow 17% by 2030. And this year, there’s no bigger sporting event than the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“Our clients want direct access to the most popular sporting events; gymnastics, tennis and basketball to name three,” The GR8 Experience CEO and Co-Founder Barnabas Carrega tells CNN Travel. The company is seeing a record number of enquiries from its predominantly North American clientele for the two-week event.

With Paris’ emblematic Seine river set to take center stage during the opening ceremony as organizers swap the traditional stadium setting for a floating parade of nations, the first night is, as usual, is highest in demand — so long as it’s  “experienced in the most exclusive way possible,” Carrega says.

“We also have some clients actually going the day prior to see the set-up [of the Opening Ceremony] for a really cool behind-the-scenes experience,’ Carrega says.

GR8 says some of its clients have privately hired Ducasse sur Seine , the riverboat of Alain Ducasse, the first chef to have three restaurants with three Michelin stars, for one evening. Others will rub shoulders with Olympic executives, heads of state, A-list celebrities and past Olympic champions at the Trocadéro, where the parade will come to an end.

Tailor-made itineraries

In itineraries seen by CNN Travel, experience companies are tapping into the most exclusive packages provided by official hospitality provider On Location for tickets to Olympic events. These include access to hospitality suites which will be fully catered, with alcohol available. The general public, meanwhile, won’t be able to buy alcohol as per France’s strict booze ban inside sporting venues.

Tour operator Kensington Tours says it has two clients coming into Paris for the first seven nights of the Games. They’ll kick off their stay watching the opening ceremony from the vantage point of Alma Bridge, with the Eiffel Tour rising in front of them. The base price for this official Bridge 360 Package is $10,300, and includes flowing Champagne, live music and meet-and-greets with Olympians in a brasserie-style setting.

Kensington says the best tickets – “gold 1st category A” – have already been secured for their clients at a cost of between $500 to $1,000 a ticket for tennis and basketball events. On the one day they are not attending any events, they’ll be whisked away on a private whiskey tasting led by a distillery owner.

AZA Luxury Travel’s Angela Adto Tepper says her company has designed a whole Paris program for a family of financiers from Oahu, Hawaii, who are coming specifically to watch basketball and wrestling.

“Paris presents a wealth of opportunities for luxury travelers to indulge in during the Olympics,” Adto Tepper says. “I have tailored an itinerary that includes Michelin-starred restaurants, guided curated shopping excursions in Parisian fashion districts and private tours to iconic sights like the Louvre.”

Similarly, Craft Travel has organized a busy, 15-day itinerary for a family of four, including two teenagers, from New York. Among the exclusive experiences is a private concert at the Palais Garnier, Paris’ gilded opera house.

“The performers will include a National Opera Ballet dancer, a classic quartet and an opera singer. A gourmet dinner will accompany the performance. Afterwards, they’ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the opera house, including a visit to the costume workshop where all the magic happens,” Craft Travel’s director, Andrea Galvez, says.

Home in Paris for the family will be the La Réserve Apartments , just across from the Trocadéro. “They wished for a prime location and a luxurious environment that feels homey yet offers the services of a five-star hotel, and this is exactly what they’ll get,” says Galvez. The apartment will include a full-time attendant and a private chauffeur so they can avoid the city’s already-stretched public transport network.

Palaces and superyachts

To ensure their clients have access to Paris’ most prestigious hotels, many luxury travel advisers have made blanket bookings at properties across the city.

“We’ve contracted room blocks at eight different hotels for the full period of the games. We’ve then made shorter stays available inside those blocks to our guests,” says Dave Guenther, president of sports travel experts Roadtrips , an Internova Travel Group company. Among those are Rosewood Hôtel de Crillon, Le Bristol Paris and the Shangri-La Paris.

Those that have snared a room at Paris’ top hotels are paying top dollar for the privilege. At Le Royal Monceau Raffles Paris , one of France’s ultra-prestigious “palace” hotels (a status awarded to exceptional luxury properties), its 190 square meter (2,045 sq foot) Royal Monceau Suite has been booked for the duration of the Olympic Games at a rate of $27,000 per night.

And, just like the athletes they have come to cheer on, wealthy travelers are bringing their entire entourage with them to Paris. “Some of the top suites have been personalized according to guest’s décor preferences and will feature a hair and make-up area,” Le Royal Monceau’s General Manager Nicolas De Gols says.

“A regular guest is traveling with their personal chef and working with the hotel’s culinary team to adapt the kitchen inside the suite to fit their needs, too.” In front of the hotel, an area will also be designated for the guest’s own fleets. “Some are traveling with almost 20 vehicles,” De Gols adds.

With other French cities such as Marseille and Nice — and even the far-flung French territory Tahiti — hosting Olympic events as well, it’s hardly a surprise that superyacht charters are also trending for the games.

Fraser Yachts says Askari, a 33-meter (107-foot) classic yacht based in French Polynesia, has received multiple inquiries for surfing events in Teahupo’o, Tahiti.

In the Mediterranean, the Monaco-based yacht brokerage has a confirmed charter on a 27-meter (89-foot) motor yacht in Marseille to follow the Olympic windsurfing competition in early August and is also looking to deploy yachts from its US fleet to the Mediterranean to accommodate increased charter demand in the south of France this summer.

The wine Olympics

Considering the choice of host nation, it seems many luxury travelers are also keen to secure allocations of gold medal-worthy wines to enjoy while in Paris. Clément Bru and Charles de Brosses, the duo behind Cookoon , a luxury gastronomic service that connects clients with Michelin-starred chefs in exclusive, private locations, say they are already seeing a high demand for fine and rare wines from incoming Olympic visitors.

“We’ve been contacted by an American professional sportsperson who has told us that they really like older Burgundys,” Bru says. Thanks to their service’s network, the pair have already been able to source a nearly 40-year-old bottle of Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée “Cros Parantoux” — a wine that averages around $16,000 a bottle — as well as wines from another revered Burgundy estate, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The wines will be served in an ultra-exclusive private property secured by the duo. “We are organizing a special evening with a leading chef and sommelier in an amazing venue with a view overlooking the Champ de Mars,” Bru says.

Yet, despite their intricate network of connections, it seems like there are some requests even the most well-connected of UHNW concierges can’t guarantee.

“A client of ours is interested in doing a whole behind-the-scenes experience with [US gymnast] Simone Biles,” GR8’s Carnega explains. “It’s very complicated because she’s very focused on trying to get her to win.

“But we’re working on it.”

Paris Olympics: See the venues of the Summer Games

This summer's Olympics will unfold in more than 30 venues throughout Paris and other cities throughout France. This story is best viewed on mobile in the NBC News app .

The Olympics will transform Paris, with dozens of competitions and events expected to draw huge crowds to one of the world’s most iconic cities. Take a tour of some of the Games’ more noteworthy venues.

The River Seine, which flows through the heart of Paris, will be a central location throughout the Games.

The Seine will be the site of the opening ceremony on July 26, when 10,000 athletes aboard more than 160 boats will parade on the water in front of crowds of up to 300,000. In the following weeks, swimming, triathlon, 3-on-3 basketball, skateboarding and gymnastics competitions will also be held at venues along the river.

Beach volleyball will be played at a temporary stadium, currently under construction, in the Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower Stadium will offer a spectacular view of one of Paris’ most iconic landmarks.

Judo and wrestling competitions will take place at a temporary arena in the Champ de Mars.

The arena will be dismantled after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympic village lies along the Seine’s northern bank and will house more than 20,000 athletes during the Olympics and Paralympic Games combined.

The village is located about a mile away from Stade de France, which will serve as the main Olympic stadium and host major events such as rugby, shot put and track and field.

The Roland Garros Stadium, built in 1928 in western Paris, is traditionally the home of the annual French Open tennis tournament.

During the Paris Olympics, the Roland Garros will host tennis, boxing, wheelchair tennis and sitting volleyball competitions.

The Olympics are not limited to Paris, as events will take place in other French cities, too. Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes and Nice will host soccer games. Sailing competitions will take place at the Marseille marina, and Villeneuve-d’Ascq in northern France will host basketball and handball competitions.

The farthest event of the Games will take place almost 10,000 miles away, in the French Polynesian island of Tahiti.

Teahupo’o, which is home to some of the biggest waves on the planet, will host surfing competitions.
