SCHOONER HERITAGE

Experience the very best  of

the Maine coast!

Heritage_Andre Albert.JPG

Unleash Your Inner Sailor on a Windjammer Adventure in Maine!

Sail aboard the newest and largest vessel in the fleet!

Welcome Aboard!

Join us aboard the Heritage this season for an unforgettable Maine windjammer cruise. Every trip is special. Capts. Sean and Ben are your hosts aboard every trip. In addition to sailing the vessel, they enjoy entertaining their guests by playing live music in the evenings. The food is delicious with restaurant quality dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Daily breads, cookies, and desserts are all freshly baked aboard.

Each trip we enjoy an all-you-can-eat lobster cookout on a pristine island beach. Hear about the islands, vessels and people of Mid-Coast Maine as well as the many lighthouses we see. Wildlife abounds with birds both ashore and at sea as well as marine mammals. Best of all you can enjoy sailing aboard a schooner built with your comfort in mind.

Heritage Sailing

Enjoyed the trip of a lifetime with my daughter (age 29)! The Captains and crew were kind and engaging and the food was incredible! The main coast is full of beautiful little islands and sailing felt like such an adventure! The captains entertained us one evening and surprised us with their notable talents!

Romantic getaways in Maine Schooner Heritage

We have a trip for everyone aboard the Schooner Heritage. Whether you want to sail with the fleet, explore in search of lighthouses, tour Acadia, bond with family, gaze at shooting stars, or just relax and sail the Maine coast with no itinerary. We can always promise stunning views, delicious food, and an unforgettable experience. Summers in Maine are a time for growth and rejuvenation. The season is short so as Mainers we celebrate and make the most of it. Join us in this celebration as we explore hidden places not accessible to most and with 3,478 miles of tidal coastline, see Maine the way it was meant to be seen.

Coasting schooners, like the Heritage, were designed for accessing shallow passages and ports allowing us to travel to more secluded places where comparable sized vessels can’t access. This makes Heritage the perfect choice when choosing a windjammer to sail on.

Live music night in the Heritage galley

Enjoy an evening beverage and sing along with Captains Sean and Ben during lively music nights.  Whether up on deck, or down in the galley, music nights aboard the Schooner Heritage are the best on the bay!

Performing different genres of music, and the songs you know and love, as well as songs you may have never heard before that will surely be added to your playlist after you get home.

We look forward to you joining us!

Relax  & Unwind

You'll feel like you've stepped into another time and place aboard Heritage. Each day is filled with a little adventure and plenty of relaxation. We leave Rockland headed for parts unknown; wherever the wind, weather, and tides take us. The coast of Maine is spotted with over 3,000 islands topped with lush evergreen forests and lined with rugged granite shores. Row ashore and stretch your legs in local fishing villages and towns rich with art and culture. In the evenings we will anchor in hidden coves where you’ll enjoy coastal wildlife, spectacular sunsets, and endless stars.

Authentic Maine Experience

Windjamming is an authentic, “real Maine” experience: a traditional island lobster bake, fire red Maine sunsets, rocky coastlines, seals, porpoise, and seabirds, and home cooked meals made from locally sourced food.

Relax and let us do the driving! Cruises are unscripted and spontaneous with as much or as little activity as you would like.

Eco-Friendly Sailing Cruise

Windjamming is an eco-friendly vacation. Using the wind to move our way up and down the coast and rowing guests ashore, we use very little fuel. We also leave no trace on the islands we visit. You can feel great choosing this “green” vacation!

Sail Away...

Join us aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French and set sail for a truly amazing sailing vacation. Our Windjammer cruises combine the beautiful coast of Maine with tremendous sailing aboard an historic tallship....not to mention the homemade cuisine and all-you-can-eat-lobster!

From Memorial Day through mid-October , we sail from Camden Harbor along Maine’s pristine coast, sharing the Lewis R. French with only 20 guests on each trip. Spend your days relaxing on deck, steering the ship, and enjoying the company of your shipmates. Unplug from daily life, tune into the sounds of the bay, and enjoy the escape of sailing a historic Maine schooner.

Launched in April 1871, the French is a National Historic Landmark and the oldest commercial sailing vessel in the U.S. She has been comfortably refitted with both single and double cabins , modern navigation equipment, and a full galley where our professional crew prepares delicious homemade meals, desserts and hors d'oeuvres all day long.

We look forward to sharing the Lewis R. French with you!

- Captain Becky Wright and Nathan Sigouin

Sailing Aboard the Lewis R. French

Cabin aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French

The Lewis R. French has 6 double bed cabins, 2 bunkbed cabins, and 4 single cabins. The cabins are cozy and comfortable. There is standing headroom, nooks and hooks to stow all your gear, and a comfortable bed in every one. Each cabin has running fresh water, an opening window, electric reading lights, and a USB charger and comes furnished with linens, blankets, and towels.

Breakfast aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French

Spend the days trimming sails, steering the schooner, learning about the Maine coast and wildlife, or just sit back, read a book, and watch the scenery drift past. The galley crew cooks up delicious meals on our wood cookstove, so those sea going appetites will be satisfied and then some. When the sun begins to set, the French will settle into a cozy harbor and swing silently at anchor.

National Historic Landmark Schooner Lewis R. French

The French was proudly named a National Historic Landmark and has a large following. From folks that have sailed on her as a windjammer to old-timers who remember her when she carried freight, the French has touched many people. It is a truly unique experience to sail on a vessel that has been active since shortly after the death of Abraham Lincoln!

PRE-SEASON THREE  or SIX DAY CRUISE  ABOARD THE  SWIFT

Off-season rates, coupled with long days and uncrowded anchorages mean you will see more for less.

In June, crew and passengers are anxious to get started on a new season, and the windjammers are often the only vessels on the bay. The sailing is great and enthusiasm is high.

THREE DAY CRUISE – PRE-SEASON

These cruises are an excellent introduction to the world of windjamming. You may choose from the first or second half of the week. This can be a grand change of pace or the highlight of a longer Maine vacation. A Lobster Feast is included in all three-day cruises.

Board Sunday evening at 5:30 PM and meet your new shipmates. You will be on your own for dinner in town, but will sleep aboard your vessel.

After a hearty breakfast Monday, we get underway for our short adventure exploring the islands of Maine. You will return to Camden Harbor between 10 a.m. and Noon Wednesday. Often, people who take the first half pre-season 3-day cruise have such a good time, they ask to stay on for the second half.  IF SPACE ALLOWS, you can stay for the second half of the cruise, at an additional discounted fee.

SECOND HALF

The usual boarding time is 5:30 PM on Wednesday, but we may ask  you  to be in the area earlier and check in with us by phone.  In either case, you will return by 10 am on Saturday.

SIX-DAY CRUISE

Offered exclusively in the Pre-Season, these trips have it all. They are the best value with long days to sail and explore, a shore-side lobster bake, and lots of time to relax and unwind. Board Sunday evening and return Saturday by 10 a.m.

SUMMER SAILING

Available on the Swift.

THREE-DAY CRUISE

This cruise is an excellent introduction to the world of windjamming. Board Sunday or Wednesday evening, meet your new shipmates and have dinner on your own in Camden.  You will sleep aboard, and after a hearty breakfast the following morning, you’ll be underway for your adventure exploring the islands of Maine. This cruise can be a grand change of pace and certainly the highlight of a longer Maine vacation. A Lobster Feast is included in all three-day cruises. You will return to Camden Harbor by 10 a.m. Wednesday or Saturday.

FALL FOLIAGE CRUISES

The Windjammer Experience

Wake up to the smell of coffee and freshly baked muffins. Take your time–there’s no rush to catch a train, make a meal, or plan your day. Find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the changing light of morning or enjoy easy conversation with your shipmates and crew. After breakfast sit back and relax, or energize yourself – there are sails to be raised!  Guests are invited to help in all shipboard activities.

You’ll spend about six hours each day under sail meandering through the islands and bays of mid-coast Maine. The ever-changing scenery provides guests with close-up views of seals and porpoises, lighthouses and lobstermen, sometimes even whales and puffins.

windjammer sailing cruises

The best way to experience the Maine Coast

Every afternoon or evening, your windjammer drops anchor in the safe, snug harbor off a quiet fishing village or an uninhabited island where you can go ashore and explore . Each Windjammer has small boats to get people ashore and additional rowboats for guest use. Try your hand at rowing, paddle-boarding, or sailing a dingy.  And once anchored, the pool is open! Dive in to Maine’s crisp refreshing waters (or enjoy watching the hearty ones who do!)

That night you might cap an exhilarating day of sailing with a glass of wine, star gazing, some music or storytelling on deck or perhaps a rousing game of Hearts around the wood stove.

And of course, you won’t go hungry! Windjammers are a movable feast with on-deck dining and fabulous, fresh food. Each vessel has a professional cook and galley crew who craft three homemade meals a day (plus hors d’oeuvres and desserts galore!). Then there’s the beach lobster bake with fresh caught Maine lobster and all the traditional fixin’s. Take a windjammer cruise and the toughest decision you might have to make is how many lobsters to eat at the beach side lobster bake.

Island Windjammers Cruise Schedule and Rates

Ahoy there!

Two frequently asked questions are "When is the best time to sail?" and "When should I reserve my cabin?"  We like to say that any time is a good time to sail! The weather in the Caribbean is warm and balmy year-round. Winter months are busier, because folks are trying to escape the cold back home.

Tropical storm season is June 1 through November 30. During the peak storm months of August through October, we move our ships to the southern Caribbean, where storms are less likely to occur. We also lower our rates!

Our ships are popular and have small capacities. We suggest that you reserve your space as soon as you decide on a preferred ship and sail date.

If you have questions, please call us Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 EST, or email us at  [email protected] .

We're standing by to assist, and look forward to seeing you on deck!

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
