80s-themed cruise: A blast to the past with P&O’s high-sea adventure
Frankie says relax... onboard an 80s-themed high-sea adventure with P&O Cruises. Melinda Healy dons her legwarmers and gives it a whirl.
Rocking up anywhere in daylight hours decked out in 80s gear can be a daunting proposition, perhaps even more so in 2023 when neon is so not a thing.
Uber drivers across Brisbane are no doubt provided with their entertainment for the day, and as the cohort of lairy 80-inspired passengers come into sight the fear of embarrassment swiftly turns to excitement.
It’s a blue-sky Saturday that’s ideal for cruising and the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is a sea of parachute tracksuits, side ponytails, body suits, legwarmers, and neon as far as the eye can see; passengers lined up for “their right to … paaartay”. See what I did there?
Laughter fills the air from he lively crowd, some of whom have taken adopting the 80s as far as dressing up as Fleetwood Mac’s frontwoman Stevie Nicks. Others are repping Aerobics Oz Style as they prepare to board the 281-metre, 998-cabin cruiser they’ll be calling home for the next three nights.
Recognising friends who have arrived separately proves the ultimate challenge, especially given the number of fluorescent wigs, big sunglasses, tie dyed shirts and leather pants going around – not the usual everyday garb these days.
Themed cruises are having a moment, with travellers opting for easy, relaxing holidays offering that added entertainment factor, whether it be a decade like the 80s or 90s, tributes to personalities like Elvis, or comedy cruises, there appears to be fun for everyone.
P&O is one of a number of companies that service the Queensland hub, and it’s obvious that P&O’s Pacific Explorer is a well-equipped to handle the fun and frivolity of the 1998 passengers now onboard.
Formerly the Dawn Princess, this vessel was built in 1997 and last refurbished in 2017. It has six pools, a casino and is bursting with restaurants , bars and public spaces ideal for 80s tragics to let their hair down and celebrate.
Simone Baker has chosen this liner for her 50th birthday celebrations, and with 18 friends and family in tow, the Mackay local who flew down from North Queensland is prepped and ready to let loose with dancing, laughing, and tunes from Cyndi Lauper, Salt n’ Pepa and Men At Work firmly in her sights.
“For us it’s about leaving the daily stresses at the dock, throwing our hands in the air and singing our hearts out ,” the marine teacher and avid cruiser tells me.
“The 80s were some of the best times of my life, it was a time when our family was living under the same roof, I was at school, such good times. It feels like I am back there, it’s such a great feeling!
“From the time we arrived at the terminal cars were beeping with people yelling out ‘love your outfit’.”
A group ranging in age between 34 and 75, Simone and her crew are in their element, throwing themselves into it, no energy spared.
A big chunk of the appeal of P&O’s 80s cruises is the non-stop fun factor. Passengers can do as much or as little as they like, the most dedicated of them lining up for not only the Neon Sailaway and 80s Icons nights but also the Totally Awesome Costume Party, which is just as crazy and outrageous as it sounds.
If that’s not enough, there are feature performances to sing and dance to with headlining acts Tina Unleashed, The Badloves, Popsicle and the Forever 80s Band keeping the crowds entertained.
Like many of the groups on board, whether they be families or retirees, Simone’s gang didn’t shy away from the karaoke sessions or aerobics classes, some even lining up to learn the Thriller dance, while others preferred to test their trivia skills.

After 76+ hours of high 80s spirits on the high seas, even if it was just to Yeppoon and back with not much to see on the horizon apart from clear skies, ocean for miles and a few dolphins for good measure, the verdict is, in Simone’s book at least, that Girls Just Want to Have Fun and that happens Time After Time on P&O’s themed cruises.

P&O set to sail into the 1980s
As a music fan and a child of the 80s, the news of P&O Cruises’ I Love the 80’s sailing naturally caught my interest.
Though my 1980s musical tastes tend to favour either minimalist electro or over-the-top heavy metal, I must admit, there’s something appealing about a cruise which can take me back to the everyday sounds of the decade; a time when Top of the Pops was compulsive viewing and frankly, you were nobody if you didn’t make the poster section of Look-in or Smash Hits.
Realising the pulling potential of this most eclectic of musical decades, P&O Cruises is hosting an I Love the 80s cruise, specifically the long-running and ever-popular Here and Now show, which since 2001 has been a nostalgic runaway success, with as a host of different 80s acts strutting their stuff in successive shows. I Love the 80’s features six different influential 80s acts, performing on successive nights of a 12-night Mediterranean cruise.
So, who will we see? Well, it’s a balanced mixed bag of boys and girls. Leading the lads is none other than 80s teen idol Paul Young, who’ll be laying his hat and calling the Oceana home as he treats guests to such hits as Love of the Common People and Everytime You Go Away . Also Joining him on the cruise will be fellow 80’s songsmith and multi-instrumentalist Howard Jones, who’ll surely like to get to know P&O cruisers well, and Sheffield’s own New-wavers Heaven 17, who’ll no doubt be trying their best to lead them into temptation.
Heading up the girls is none-other than punk’s original princess Toyah, whose crazy hair styles and eye-catching outfits were as ever-changing as her musical style. It’s a fair bet she’ll be concentrating on her more commercial hits during the cruise, though whether or not she’ll dust off one of her famous get-ups remains a mystery. Joining her will be fiery T-Pau frontwoman Carol Decker, who’ll be sure to show cruisers a little bit of Heart and Soul and former Altered Images’ singer and sometime actress Claire Grogan, who’ll no doubt be singing Happy Birthday to you, whether it’s your birthday or not.
I Love the 80s takes place on P&O’s 12-night Western Mediterranean voyage, on the P&O Oceana which sets sail on 22 October and which will visit such ports as Malaga, Barcelona, Gibraltar and Lisbon.

Things are getting more expensive, again…
In bad news for holidaymakers, the cost of getting a new passport is set to rise once again. The Home Office has confirmed that passport fees are set to rise by more than 7% from tomorrow, under new proposals. This means the cost of online applications within the UK, for anyone aged 16 and over, will increase from £82.50 to £88.50.

Children under 16 will also see an increase in passport costs, with the price rising to £57.50 from £53.50. Overseas and postal applications will also rise at a similar level, with postal increasing to £100 for adults and £69 for children, and an online overseas application rising to £101 for adults and £65.50 for children.
The new charges will officially be in place from tomorrow, Thursday April 11th. Last year passport fees increased by around 9%, back in February 2023.

The Home Office said in a statement: “The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. “The Government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications.
“The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders. “The increase will also help enable the Government to continue improving its services.”
Passport fees to rise within weeks as Home Office confirms new prices
In bad news for holidaymakers, the cost of getting a new passport is set to rise once again. While the changes are still subject to parliamentary approval, if passed they will be in place from April 11th. Last year passport fees increased by around 9%, back in February 2023.
Enter the competition to win a ticket
If you’re dreaming of catching a jet plane to just about anywhere, well Wizz Air have launched a holiday deal where the mystery location isn’t revealed until you land.
The Hungarian airline will take a plane full of holiday hopefuls from London Gatwick for a four-day mystery getaway as part of its #LetsGetLostwithWIZZ campaign.
Those who win a ticket to the unknown location, will turn up to London Gatwick on March 7th to board a Wizz Air flight for ‘four days of fun , including cultural, culinary and adventure activities’ – it could turn out to be the trip of a lifetime!
To be in with a chance of winning a seat on the flight, UK residents can visit the Wizz Air’s Instagram page and follow the prompts on the Let’s Get Lost London pinned post.
“Entries close on February 22nd at 00.01am”, the low-cost airline says.
The lucky chosen ones will be able to bring a plus one on the trip and winners will be contacted via Instagram.
In a post shared to its official Instagram page, the airline put: “It’s time to get onboard our latest venture to the unknown with Let’s Get Lost London, departing from London Gatwick to…
“Do this by the 22nd February and you could be in with a chance of departing with us on an exciting flight to the unknown.
“The trip will take place between 7th – 10th March. Open to UK residents only, please make sure you’re following WIZZ on Instagram and that your profile is public.”
If you’re wondering whether you’ll need your bathing suit, suncream, hiking boots, rain coat or winter woollies, don’t worry, the 35 lucky winners will be told the climate to pack for a few days before the trip.
No other clues will be given away until touch down in the unknown destination.

UK Wizz Air Managing Director, Marion Geoffroy said: “We love connecting our passengers to new countries, allowing them to meet new people and try new experiences.
“Going on a flight to an unknown destination is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we are pleased to be able to offer this to lucky winners here in the UK.
“Let’s Get Lost is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to our British passengers and we hope to continue serving them as they travel the world and make new memories.”
Wizz Air flies to more than 70 destinations from the UK. Last year, the most popular destinations among Brits included Morocco, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Spain.
It is unclear whether the airline will jet the 35 lucky ticket holders and plus ones off to one of its more popular destination choices, or whether it will choose to take them somewhere a little more alternative and secluded.
