See Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel

Journey to the well-preserved ruins of Pompeii

An unfathomable history lesson is found in the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Go shopping in Italy's fashion capital Milan

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters are found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo dress Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River will show you the building’s architectural brilliance.

The authentic carbonara experience will take place in Rome, covered in salty Pecorino Romano cheese. A simple dish inspiring heart-warming meal times, this pasta will connect you with Italy’s rich culinary customs - an impressive evolution from its supposed heritage as a coal-miner’s meal.

Pollo alla Cacciatora

Literally translating to ‘hunter’ in Italian, cacciatore offers an appreciation for Italy’s meals of days gone by. Typically a preparation of rabbit or chicken, it’s the simmering tomato stew that makes this dish so mouthwatering. Satisfy a genuine hunger and consume with hand-ripped bread.

Italy tours are best served with an oversized slice of tiramisu. Cementing this country's obsession with espresso, this cake of layered biscuits soaked in coffee is the perfect after hours pick-me-up before an evening stroll through the charming streets.

Best food in Italy

A date with Italian food will likely start and end with a slice of pizza. But it’s the menu items that we share with you in between that will take your appreciation to new heights; think cacciatore and Carbonara with a slice of tiramisu in between.

What to pack for Italy

People packing for a tour

A classic linen outfit

The Italians are famous for their equal parts glamorous and effortless dress sense. Look the part with a few ensembles featuring classic linens in navy and white.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Italy, you might find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to remember the traditional Italian recipes you learn.

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about Italian history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A small blanket

When exploring the soul-stirring setting of Tuscany, a picnic may call. Come prepared with a small blanket to cover in wine and cheese.

Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes

A classic memoir that brought the romance of Tuscany to the world, there’s no better time to read this book than when venturing through the country yourself.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

Local Living Italy—Sorrento

Touring the coast was good. A little difficult to navigate if you are older or have some difficulty walking. The lemon farm was a little isolated and a bit of a walk to the road to catch a bus if you wanted to explore the area. The lemon farm had beautiful views. The rooms were nice but needs some upgrading and repairs in some areas. The breakfast was disappointing and some of the food was a little cold. We did not know that you needed to purchase wine from the farm. It was a little overpriced. The owners and staff were very nice people and our tour guide Anna was very nice. I think this tour is more for young people.

Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)

I was extremely impressed with everything surrounding the tour. This was the first tour I’ve taken after years of traveling. I enjoyed all of our guides and the knowledge they shared with us about the area we were in. The itinerary was very manageable and loved having enough time to explore on our own at each destination. The wineries we visited were beautiful and the wines were excellent.

Best of Italy Tour

Best of Italy

Guide was Lorenzo. He was charming and inclusive and socialised well with the group. He was helpful with luggage. We had one member of the group who always complained, right from the start and found fault with everything plus she was a heavy drinker. Lorenzo dealt well with a difficult situation. This person made the trip unpleasant for the rest of the group. No one wanted to share a room with her and listen to her whine and complain constantly. We all would have enjoyed the tour more if she had been removed from it. I did not always understand what Lorenzo said because of his accent and the Italian to English translation. A suggestion: that Lorenzo ensure all the group are present before giving detailed information and that he checks we all have understood what he said. If the information is complex, then a group text would be good. Was the tour what I expected? Yes and no. I expected more help with booking tours that were not included, which I didn't get. I appreciated the organised events and also the free time. The accommodation was excellent at La Spezia and Lucca. Hotel Stella was a disappointment. The range of activities was very good and the choice of places we visited. As the tour is so busy, it would be good if Intrepid did a sheet/email of options of what to see in each place ie in Lucca to see the house where Pucci was born etc. with them highlighted on a map and whether it's free or the cost. I know the tour was not a 'comfort' tour but it did demand a good level of fitness. I'm glad I was reasonably fit. Overall I enjoyed the option to see a lot of Italy in a few days and that the places and activities we did were so diverse. I enjoyed the small group and that, in the majority, we bonded well and had fun and a lot of laughs.

Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo

My mom and I went on our first out-of-the-U.S. trip together and we had a wonderful time! Getting there was a bit rocky due to flights being cancelled, but our group and tour guide made us feel welcome immediately. I loved the walks and the views, and our tour guide Gennaro knows this whole area like the back of his hand. We couldn't have asked for a more helpful and kind guide for this trip.

Hiking in the Dolomites Tour

Hiking in the Dolomites

Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

Sicilian Landscapes: Catania-Catania (8 days/7 nights)

We had a wonderful time during our one week “Sicilian Secrets” trip. Our guide Placido was very well organized, full of interesting stories and the sights were simply marvellous. Everything ran very smoothly and maybe we were lucky but we had a great core group of fellow travellers that respected the given times and so we moved right along without any troubles or delays. This tour is setup so that people can start in Catania, Ragusa or Palermo .,. but it was never a problem that certain people were joining or finishing in various towns along the way. Accommodations and food were always decent and sometimes even great, depending on the place. The bus was very comfortable and our driver Angelo was always kind, a true professional and we felt in very good hands as he navigated our very comfortable, full size bus, effortlessly through many tight and winding mountain roads. We definitely felt that we got our money’s worth. Sicily is a stunning island holding new surprises around every corner and this round trip allowed us to see so much of its great beauty in a very comfortable way. We can only recommend it.

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

This was my first hiking tour and I'm happy to say it exceeded all my expectations. It was exactly the type of holiday I wanted, hiking in beautiful scenery with good company and fabulous food. The food was absolutely fantastic - homemade and some homegrown. The hosts at our accommodations were wonderful and wend above and beyond for us. Our tour guide Elisa was perfect for this trip, she helped to make a great itinerary even better. She was very knowledgeable , accommodating and fun. The best kind any group can only dream of.

Premium Tuscany Tour

Premium Tuscany

This was our first tour. It was very informative and the cities that were explored were both interesting and beautiful. Unfortunately Italy was experiencing a heat wave and all the walking turned into a lot of sweating ( not your fault ). If in the future we go on another tour... it will be with Tourradar.

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)

We were a group of 3 couples who took this trip together. With the exception of problems with airport pickup and transportation to the airport at the end of the trip, we were satisfied with the hotels, meals and guides. In Siracusa, the famous ancient theater was not on the itinerary and with advance information we could have arranged that ourselves. Overall, we enjoyed a successful round trip in Sicily.

Great agency. They are with you from start to finish. They were really helpful throughout the trip and worked their best to answer questions or fix any issues that came during the trip. They chose really good hotels, that are convenient and comfortable. I highly recommend them, as I may be booking with them in the near future. The few negative experiences had nothing to do with them. Wanderful did an amazing job.

Amalfi Coast Experience Tour

Amalfi Coast Experience

The perfect way to explore Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Giovani was fantastic at bringing the group together, communicating options and giving local tips and facts. I recommend the extra package if possible- the dinner was delicious and the chairlift in Capri was a highlight. This tour gives flexibility and freedom if you want free time or if you want to stay with the group in locations. Accomodation was a fun way to see a camp site in Sorrento and has a pool, mini market and restaurant.

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience Tour

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience

We have recently returned from Discover Matera and Taste of Salento tour arranged by Soleto Travel. Omar of Soleto Travel has been most helpful and responsive to our pre tour and on tour queries. In one instance he arranged invaluable medical assistance following an accident to my partner. The tour was excellent and met expectations. Be prepared to climb a lot of steps in Matera. In particular our hosts at Tenuta Linazza (masseria) were most welcolming and the food was genuine Italian with a wide variety of dishes available - ranging from delicious desserts to great pasta and seafoood dishes accompanied by hgh quality Puglia wines. Emiliio is a chef extraordinaire as well as being a most professional and insightful guide into Puglia customs and culture. His family members Clara, Michel and Antonio also acted as tour guides and shared these same attributes. The tour flexibility offered is a plus in satisfying the consensus wishes of touring participants. Accomodation at the farm cannot be faulted - spacious and clean with good facilities. There is the added bonus of Pongo the family dog who occasionally walks with you to the local coffee outlet to meet the Castiglione locals.

Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour

I directly booked this tour with Mr. Omar. Traveling alone, I had many questions regarding the tour process and accommodation. The agent was great in answering all my requests in a long email exchange. The experience in Salento was exceptional, the welcome received from Emilio and his family was something unique and special. The accommodation provided in a double ensuite room was perfect, simple but clean and comfortable. The big plus was certainly Emilio's cooking. Every day I could order what I wanted to eat in the evening. Fresh fish, homemade pasta, burrata cheese and prawns like never eaten in my life! A driver and local guide available every day to visit the splendid villages of Salento are another plus of this tour, together with the family atmosphere and flexibility. Emilio, being a true local, always adds something more than what is on schedule. The chocolate factory was amazing! In Matera instead, I stayed in a suggestive hotel in the Sassi area, the cave room was impressive! Here there is much more free time to stroll and do some shopping. The only problem, Matera is all ups and downs with stairs everywhere. The local guide Cosimo was excellent and of great sympathy and knowledge who set up a tasting of wine and typical products just for me, in the tavern of a local producer. The dinners in the local restaurant were delicious with a rich menu and dishes of the local cuisine, not the usual tourist stuff. A lovely experience, and a big thank you to Omar and everyone who made it possible! Highly recommended

Reviews of Small Group tours to Italy

Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour
This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!

More about italy.

As a treasure trove of artistic and historical wonders, Italy offers timeless beauty and cultural richness. In the central Tuscany region, the streets of Florence are filled with Renaissance architecture, with a skyline dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, a Gothic art masterpiece. Within the northern Lombardy region, the fashion mecca, Milan, offers an abundance of art galleries and museums, with the most sought-after sight being The Last Supper, a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea in the central Lazio region, Rome is home to the ancient Colosseum, an amphitheater that played host to gladiatorial games, and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple. Perched atop cliffs that overlook the Bay of Naples in the southwestern Campania region, the coastal town of Sorrento is known for its lemon groves, notably some of the best lemons in Italy, they are used to produce the splendor that is Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Take a gondola ride through the romantic canals of Venice to explore one of the most unique cities in the world, built on more than 100 islands in the northeastern Veneto region. Savor the sweet symphony of Italy's gastronomic legacy and culinary mastery that spans centuries, with authentic Italian gelato, pasta, and pizza.

Another amazing ef tour.

“This trip was AMAZING!! The local tours in every city were amazing, the hostels were great (hint: rooftop pool in Florence!), and our tour director Luigi was the best. I would relive this week over and over again if I could. The food, the wine, the history and sightseeing. If you have any doubts just book it! You will fall in love with Italy.”

After this trip I’m moving to Italy

Italy is just chef’s kiss

"Italy” text over trees and hills with buildings in the background.

Know before you go

While it may feel awkward at first, attempting the local language goes a long way when navigating a city and interacting with people. Practice these basic Italian words and phrases to get started:

  • Hello: Ciao
  • Goodbye: Ciao
  • Thank you: Grazie
  • Where is...?: Dove si trova...?
  • I need...: Ho bisogno...
  • Cheers!: Saluti!

Italians are warm, inviting people that are very proud of their culture that is world-renowned for its arts and cuisine. And learning some these little quirks, as well as some general European ones, can help you embrace it to the fullest.

  • Fare bella figura: This phrase meaning “to make a good impression” is a way of life adopted by many Italians. It’s not only about dressing well, but also about graceful interactions and good manners.
  • Italians tend to be very expressive when they speak, both in tone and hand gestures.
  • Meals are not hurried, as people like to take their time appreciating the food and sharing conversation. This also means that you’ll have to request your bill in most restaurants.
  • Public restrooms in Europe sometimes require a small fee – hold on to your coins!
  • Unlike the U.S., everything (hotels, meals, appliances) is smaller. After all, less is more!
  • Water is an added cost at restaurants, and you have to choose between still or sparkling.
  • Smoking is still rather popular in Italy. Don’t be surprised to see large amounts of locals with lit cigarettes!

Food & Drink

You’ll sample a variety of local dishes on your trip, but read on for tips, tricks, and delicacies you just must try.

  • Breakfast: Italians usually have a sweet pastry and cappuccino instead of the savory continental breakfast you’re used to. Try a chocolate croissant!
  • Coffee: Iced coffee begone, espresso is your new friend and you’ll never find a bad espresso in Italy. Make sure to order and pay for your espresso at the bar to avoid paying more than the usual 1-2€!
  • Aperitivo: This is a light meal between lunch and dinner with snacks and wine, or a refreshing spritz like aperol or campari
  • Late dinners: Dinner doesn’t often begin until after 8 or 9pm. More reason to enjoy aperitivo!
  • Digestif: Try an after-dinner digestive liquor like limoncello, sambuca, amari, or apertivi
  • Cacio e pepe: A simple yet delicious pasta dish with black pepper, pecorino Romano cheese, and pasta. They say all Italian meals only require 3 ingredients!
  • Roman artichokes: One of the most famous dishes of Roman cuisine, the artichokes are braised in water, white wine, garlic, salt, pepper, and oil.
  • Florentine steak: A specific cut of the meat from Tuscan cattle, and it is an excellent choice if you’re feeling #fancy in #Florence
  • Pizza: Need we say more?
  • Arancini: These Sicilian fried rice balls are traditionally filled with meat and peas, but you'll likely find a number of different variations to sample.
  • Cannoli: You may have had some cannolis in your life, but here's your chance to have these fried pastry shells filled with ricotta in the land of their birth: Sicily.

We plan it all. And then some.

Our group trips to Italy come with everything included. That’s accommodations, flights (unless you wanna book your own), activities, and an expert Tour Director who always knows where to find the best gelato.

Groupon Getaways Can Be Worthwhile, If You’re Wary

However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Groupon Getaways are generally worth the cost.

The trips do come with some caveats.

Read the fine print, and know what to expect.

For vacationers, scrolling through travel packages on Groupon Getaways feels like waltzing through a discount candy shop.

Consider this sampling of travel offers on Groupon Getaways, the travel section of the deals site Groupon. All of these trips include the cost of hotels and airfare:

7 days in Dubai from $999 a person

8 days in Portugal (including car rental) from $999 a person

7 days in Malta from $799 a person

The prices alone might make you want to start packing your bags. But they also raise the question: Is there a catch?

To find out, NerdWallet talked to three travel bloggers who used Groupon Getaways travel packages to see the world.

» MORE: Costco Travel vacations pack luxury and value

In This Article

Why groupon getaways is worth trying, the downsides of groupon getaways, make the most of your groupon trip.

The travel packages offered by Groupon Getaways are typically run by third-party travel agencies and tour operators. Here’s why you might want to book one.

The planned-out trips are helpful for first-time travelers. Before Shelby Williams traveled to Mexico on an all-inclusive Groupon Getaways tour, she had never flown on a plane or left the country.

Having the whole trip planned out made it a less stressful introduction to international travel, says Williams, a college student in Freeland, Michigan. At $899 per person, the trip was also relatively affordable for Williams, her mom and her sister.

“It’s a great way to travel abroad, if you’re scared and don’t know where to start,” says Williams, who wrote about her experience on her travel blog, Lost Comfort Zone.

You can score great deals. Many of the packages on Groupon Getaways include airfare and top-notch accommodations for a relatively low price.

Williams, who has now been on three Groupon Getaways, says her favorite trip was to Costa Rica with her mom. It cost about $1,200 per person, including airfare, a car rental and a hotel. The hotel they stayed at was luxurious, with a swim-up bar, hot springs and beautiful landscapes.

Although she and her mom had to pay additional fees for activities — including zip lining and rappelling down a waterfall — she found the overall experience to be a good value.

The guided tours can be helpful. Some of the travel packages sold on Groupon come with guided tours or excursions (sometimes for an extra fee). For Maddy Osman, a travel blogger based in Denver, these guided tours were a huge plus — especially when she visited China.

Given the language barrier, “having a guide ... was almost necessary just to get around,” Osman says. She wrote about the trips she’s taken with Groupon Getaways on her online clothing website, Tanks That Get Around. (Disclosure: Osman’s blog contains affiliate links to Groupon Getaways.)

The tour guide in China also took the travelers to the city of Suzhou, where he was from. It wasn’t a place Osman would have thought to visit on her own, and she’s glad she was able to see it, she says.

groupon-getaways-worth-the-cost

Christian Portilla (left) and Melani Liriano, who is now her wife, in Machu Picchu. (Photo courtesy of Christian Portilla)

They’re good for celebrating special occasions. For Christian Portilla, visiting Machu Picchu in Peru was a life-changing trip. Her now-wife had booked the trip through Groupon Getaways as a surprise. When the couple hiked to the top of the Incan citadel, the view was breathtaking.

“When you’re there, when you finally make it to the top and you feel the energy that the land has — it’s hard to describe, but it’s almost electric,” says Portilla, a freelance journalist based in Miami.

That’s when Portilla’s girlfriend got on one knee and proposed to her.

“I was shaking, I was crying. I wanted to say yes but I lost my voice because I was just freaking out,” says Portilla, who wrote about the trip on her blog, Roam Free Writes. “That’s a memory I’ll never forget.”

Here’s why a Groupon Getaway travel package might not be a good fit for you.

Dates can be limited. “It’s hard to find the perfect [trip] when you’re on a time range,” says Williams, who books her trips to coincide with her school’s spring break.

If you have an inflexible vacation schedule, you might have to compromise to find a good deal. When Williams wasn’t able to find a trip to Ireland that fit her schedule, she opted to go to Italy instead.

In some cases, sales pitches are baked into the itinerary. Guided tours will take you to plenty of popular destinations — but you might have to endure some tedious bouts of souvenir-shopping. Travel agencies can make money, in part, by taking tourists on shopping expeditions.

“A lot of them have this pretense of, ‘Oh, we’re giving you a tour of the factory’ or whatever. And they give you an hour or something to shop,” Osman says. “And if you’re not interested in shopping, that’s an hour of your trip you can’t get back — because you’re more than likely in the middle of a day of the tour, so you can’t just peace out if you want to see the next thing.”

The accommodations can be subpar. While many of the hotels in Groupon Getaways are high-quality, some aren't.

The hotel Portilla stayed at in Cusco, Peru, had limited water. Because of that, the toilet in the room couldn’t be flushed unless a hotel worker was called in to flush it.

“We weren’t able to take full showers or baths or anything like that,” Portilla says, adding that they had to rinse off by filling little cups with water from the sink. It would have been nice to know about the situation in advance so they could have prepared, she says.

Williams says that many of her hotel stays through Groupon Getaways were excellent, but not all. “The one in Rome was kind of bad. Our neighbor was puking all night, and we could hear that. The walls were paper-thin,” Williams says.

If you’re unhappy with your accommodations, you can call the Groupon Getaways customer service line to file a property complaint.

“Property complaints do happen. They’re not among our top complaints, but they do happen. If they call us, we’ll call the hotel and sort of work out the details,” says Chris Stevens, vice president of Groupon Getaways. In cases where Groupon has done something egregiously wrong, he adds, the company may issue a refund.

Going on a Groupon Getaways vacation essentially means going on a trip someone else planned for you. It can be a lot of fun — but if you don’t fully understand the itinerary, some details might surprise you. Here’s what you should know.

Understand what you’re buying. If the travel package you’re looking at seems unusually cheap, it could be because:

The price doesn’t include airfare

The excursions and guided tours cost extra

The cost is for a dual occupancy hotel room; solo travelers might have to pay more

Check these details before you book to make sure you know what you’re getting into. Osman recommends reading the reviews of travel agencies and hotels before booking, too.

Master the details. When Portilla and her partner went to Peru, neither of them had read through the full details of the trip. Because they didn’t have cell service in Peru, they weren’t able to check email for details on their phones.

“Read the fine print,” Portilla says. “Or you’ll find yourself at the airport and you don’t know who’s picking you up.”

Renting a car? Do your research. If your travel package includes a car rental, it helps to know what driving conditions are like in the country you’re visiting. Don’t forget to bring maps or a GPS, Williams says.

When she and her mom went to Costa Rica, a car rental was included in their trip. But their GPS didn’t work because they hadn’t downloaded the maps beforehand, and they were surprised to find that the roads didn’t have signs. Without a properly functioning GPS, driving to their hotel at night felt like an impossible task. Next time, Williams says, they’ll come prepared.
