Palau de la Música Catalana: Barcelona’s Music Palace
If nature is the heart of modernism, then the Palau de la Música Catalana has flowers pumping through its veins.
Just try and pass it without stopping to admire the precision of the ornaments, the depth of the mosaics in its columns, and its sensational stained glass dome ceiling.
Going in for a concert or a guided tour in English is the real magic, though – let’s see how we can do it.
Palau de la Música Catalana
The Palace of Catalan Music is the result of three converging dreams:
- The need for the up-and-coming choir Orfero Catala to find a permanent home.
- Barcelona’s desire to put another jewel in the crown of Catalan Modernisme.
- Catalan architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner’s motivation to challenge conventional theatre building.
The result is the most sought-after modern auditorium in the world, with an incredible 4.5-star rating from over 11,000 Tripadvisor reviews. You’ll even find the word ‘breathtaking’ in hundreds of English reviews; it’s that good!
Palau de la Música Facts
- Seats 2200+ spectators.
- Among the finest examples of art nouveau Barcelona architecture .
- Provides an explosion of colourful and carefully placed mosaics.
- The only auditorium in Europe that’s completely illuminated by natural light.
- Offers golden-age type acoustics to drive music lovers wild.
- Proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
- Hosts over 600 shows a year (from opera to flamenco to symphony orchestra and more).
- Has an annual concert attendance of over 500,000 people.
Why Take a Palau de la Musica Catalana Tour?
Nearly 300,000 people a year visit the Palau de la Música, and the number is only increasing. The reasons to see the palace via a guided tour are long, but I recommend embarking on a tour for the following reasons:
You’ll see more, with access to restricted areas not open to the general public during concerts.
⚠️ Warning ⚠️ : Barcelona’s top two attractions must now be booked in advance .
You can book fast track tickets to both individually or get them as part of a discount pass:
- ⛪ Buy now: Sagrada Familia Fast Track Admission (skip the lines)
- 🏞️ Buy now: Park Guell Fast Track Admission (skip the lines)
- 🎟️ Buy now: Best of Barcelona Bundle (Sagrada + Park Guell + 10% discount code for all else)
You will not be able to book these tickets on site – lock in your tickets ASAP or you could miss out.
You’ll have better lighting, as guided tours during the day make way better use of the defining natural light that dazzles everyone who sets foot in this incredible attraction.
You’ll learn a ton of interesting information from the entertaining and informative English-speaking guides.
And finally, you save money since it’s about 50% cheaper than seeing most concerts.
Palau de la Música Catalana Guided Tour
A highlight of the Palau de la Música tour is the massive 3000 pipe organ looming high above you – don’t despair; they’ll be sure to do a little performance to show you how good the acoustics are.
Even better is the stained glass sun dome (shown above) that takes a majestic three-dimensional plunge into the concert space and looks like a teardrop or a portal to another dimension.
There’s not a camera in the world to do this light show justice.
The initial video presentation about the history of the palace gives you all the info you need before the guide even opens their mouth.
When they do, virtually every sculpture on the wall and ceiling is highlighted and explained.
The English-guided tour of the Palau de la Musica runs daily every hour from 9:00-13:00, with an additional tour at 14:00.
Each tour lasts 50 minutes.

Palau de la Música Catalana History
This garden of light and colour, the brainchild of genius Catalan architect Lluis Domenech y Montaner, was built between 1905 and 1908 during the same period Antoni Gaudi was hard at work on his masterpiece Casa Batllo .
By 1909 the building had already been awarded art nouveau masterpiece status by the city of Barcelona and, in 1971, was declared a national monument.
Over the years, some major improvements and changes have been made – the most important being between 1982 and 1989 and those at the beginning of the 2000s, giving the building a library, some offices, a tiny square, and even a bar.

M. BONIS: Soir, op.76 i Matin, op.76 J. MAGRANÉ: Trois Nocturnes A. SCHÖNBERG: The transfigured night, op.4 E. BLOCH: Three nocturnes
The program La Nit (The Night) created by Trio Fortuny (Bardolet - Codina - Heredia) with the collaboration of the dance company Mal Pelo, revolves around the night as a central theme and includes the arrangement for trio with piano made by Eduard Steuermann from Schönberg's Transfigured Night and works by lesser-known composers such as the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch or the French Mel Bonis. Fortuny Trio also leaves room for local new creation, including Joan Magrané's Trois Nocturnes, a piece dedicated to them. Mal Pelo's collaboration with Trio Fortuny stems from the musicians' deep conviction that movement and space are part of the artistic experience, which is shared with the audience, going beyond genres. Specially in this case, we find in Joel Bardolet the connecting link, given that he has collaborated with the prestigious Catalan dance company for more than 10 years.

Primavera Modernista
Sunday, 19 May 2024 12:00
Lluís Calvo, Jaume Coll Mariné, Carles Dachs, Laia llobera and Susanna Rafart
Catalan modernist poetry is part of a tradition often forgotten. The monumentality of its architecture praised around the world contrasts with a literature that has been little vindicated. The Orfeó Català Essay Room, where the first stone of the Palau de la Música Catalana rests, will be the oracle that will make us invoke the voices of Joan Maragall, Jeroni Zanné, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Joan Alcover, among others. Poets that connect with other current poets that will recover the thread that connects the word and nature. Recite poems Lluís Calvo, Jaume Coll Mariné, Carles Dachs, Laia Llobera and Susanna Rafart. Public will receive an artisanal book point commemorating the activity.

Sunday, 9 June 2024 12:00
An ephemeral spring piece
Lluís Soler , actor Laia Llobera , poet Anna Griera Parra , Catalan sign language interpreter (Associació Sòcio-cultural ENCANTADES)
Poema del bosc by Alexandre de Riquer is one of the most important modernist poems in our literature. An epic song in nature, which emerges as a space of transcendence, a paradisiacal temple in which we find birds, flowers, trees and waterfalls that come to life, as well as fairies, druids, nymphs, witches, elves and goges. Lluís Soler will recite a selection of his verses, chosen by the poet Laia Llobera, on the same stage of the Palau de la Música Catalana. Modernist temple that will be a pantheistic oracle of a poem that reaches us as an ecological allegation ahead of the lettre where nature is dreamlike but also rebellious. The morning session (12h) incorporates Catalan sign language translation for people with hearing diversity by the Associació Sòcio-cultural ENCANTADES.

Pascal Comelade - Four Pianos
extraordinary concert
Wednesday, 12 June 2024 21:00
Pascal Comelade , pianos and conductor Phil Argeles, Alban Barate and Ivan Telefunken Martinez, pianos
Unique and exceptional concert by Pascal Comelade within the framework of his friend Miquel Barceló's exhibition in La Pedrera.
For the first time in Barcelona, the musician will present this format designed for four pianos and where he revisits his repertoire. Increasingly distant from the stage, Comelade is considered one of the most unique and creative musicians and composers, with an eclectic and unclassifiable style, and with music that stands out for its marked playful and experimental character. The concert ticket includes entry to the La Pedrera exhibition “BARCELÓ. CERAMICS: We are all Greeks.” More information in this link .

Una altra serenata
Saturday, 29 June 2024 22:00
Night visit with Anna Dot
By day, we can clearly see how the Palau de la Música Catalana is a garden full of vegetation. Beautiful flowers and leaves cover the floor, snail down the columns and climb up the walls. However, the fauna that inhabits it hides from our eyes and does not let itself be heard until sunset. In this night visit to the modernist enclosure by the artist Anna Dot, without the light of the sun and under the night, the ear is sharpened and we can listen to the animals, the flora, the winds and the small torrents that are heading towards the sea. With a little luck we will be able to listen to them and they will explain to us the legend of the papagay of Apel·les Mestres that, sometimes, can be seen in the Palau.

- Palau de la Música Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music in Barcelona)
- Barcelona’s palaces
Updated Aug 08 2023
The Palau de la Música Catalana (in English, Palace of Catalan Music ) is a concert hall and one of Barcelona’s major examples of Catalan modernism.
A work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner , in spite of being right in the heart of the city centre the Palau is hidden amongst a row of buildings, which means that it can often be passed almost un-noticed if you don’t know exactly where it is.
Visits to the Palau de la Música Catalana
As well as being able to attend concerts, tours and audio guided visits of the Palau de la Música Catalana are also organised in several languages.

Without a doubt, this is the best way to enjoy the beauty of this unique Modernist building, one of the most symbolic buildings in the city of Barcelona, as well as discovering a little more about the details of how it was built and its history .
The tours to the Palau de la Música Catalana, which last around 50 minutes are offered in five different languages: English , French, Italian, Spanish and Catalan.
During the guided visit you can access the Modernist Concert Hall and depending on availability the Lluís Millet Hall and the Chamber Music Hall (Sala de la Música de Cambra).
Information about the Palau de la Música Catalana
It was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and thanks to the new techniques and resources that were available at the time, it only took 3 years to be completed.
Just as when it was initially built, the Palau de la Música Catalana continues to be an auditorium in which all sorts of music takes place, from classical to the most modern, taking into account all styles and eras in between.
Going to a concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana
For music lovers there is nothing better than going to a concert of one of your favourite groups or artists at the Palau de la Música Catalana , as an experience you will surely never forget.
The only “inconvenience” may be that, during the concert, you may be distracted by the architectural and sculptural details of the Palau, even on the stage itself, rather than watching the concert itself.
If you arrive at the start of your visit to the Palau de la Música Catalana or if when you finish the visit you are not in any hurry, we recommend you to take a drink or walk around the Foyer Cafeteria (coffee bar), located on the bottom floor of the Palau which is decorated to the finest detail .
It is also a good option for those unsure if it is worth visiting inside the Palau or not. After taking a look at the cafeteria we are positive that any doubt you did have will soon disappear.

Palau de la Música Catalana - Barcelona
"Palau de la Música Catalana" (Music Palace), is a concert hall designed by the architec Lluís Domènech i Montaner and opened in 1908.This building is the headquarters of "Orfeó Catala", a prestigious institution grounded in the year 1891 to support Catalan music and culture. This is why the decoration of the building shows some representations of the " quatre barres " (which is the Catalan coat of arms).
Inside the scene is a sculpture representing on one side the "Ride of Valkyries" and on the other side, the figure of Beethoven, sculpted by Pau Gargallo and Dídac Massana . The splendid central glass light on the roof was made by Rigalt and Granell. The façade is made of red brick and decorated with mosaics from Lluís Bru.
The Palau de la Música Catalana organizes daily guided tours of the Modernist Concert hall and, when available, Lluís Millet Hall and the Chamber Music Hall.

The Palau de la Música Catalana is located in the El Born district of Ciutat Vella. It is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city and a must-see for all lovers of architecture and music.
The Catalan Music Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Catalan Music Palace was built between 1905 and 1908 to house the Orfeó Català choir (an association of Barcelona choirs), which needed a larger space for its rehearsals. Today it hosts concerts and musical events of international renown.
The Palau de la Música is one of Barcelona's architectural gems, designed by the modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. A UNESCO World Heritage Site , the building is famous for its large concert hall decorated with coloured stained glass windows, sculptures and mosaics, and is considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Modernist architecture, also known as Art Nouveau. This architecture is characterised by the use of modern materials such as iron, glass and concrete, as well as motifs and forms inspired by nature.
Specific construction techniques used in the Palau de la Música Catalana include the use of natural light, which is abundant thanks to the large skylights and rose-shaped windows. The structure also features colourful mosaics, sculptures and floral motifs, creating a unique and vibrant aesthetic effect.
The architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner , also used advanced techniques for the time, such as the use of steel trusses for the structure of the building, which allowed him to create a large concert hall without intermediate pillars. Another technical detail is that the building was constructed without using steel beams, which was very rare at the time. Instead, the structure rests on decorative cast iron columns and brick arches, creating a unique and magical atmosphere inside.
Lluís Domènech i Montaner is also known for having designed the Casa Lleó i Morera in 1902, the Casa Fuster in 1911 and, of course, the Sant Pau Hospital between 1901 and 1930, which has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997..
Our tip: To make the most of your visit to the Music Palace, we recommend taking a guided tour to learn about the history and architecture of the building. You can also attend a concert to appreciate the exceptional acoustic quality of the concert hall.
Finally, an interesting anecdote about the Music Palace is that during the Spanish Civil War, the building was used as a garage for military vehicles, which saved the building from destruction! A miracle.

I really do recommend a visit. - frinniella (28 sep 2023 - 07:50).
We don't talk enough about this palace, which is really very beautiful... Unfortunately, the façade was being restored at the time of our visit but the interior is simply magical. The price is a bit high, but like many monuments and museums in Barcelona, it's worth it.

Firstly, my wife and I visited the Palau de la Musica a couple of weeks ago. What a spectacular building! Our tour guide was most informative and the whole experience was one of the highlights to our holiday. Secondly, whilst perusing the setting, and listening to that evenings group sound checking, it struck me that this is a location which would be ideal for a concert by Peter Hammill (or even his group Van Der Graaf Generator!). I know that Peter does play regularly in Spain, and has done for over 40 years, and has a substantial fan base there. I feel that a concert there by Peter (and/or VDGG) would be a fine addition to the concerts you feature and would be interested to know how your thoughts.

Discover Palace of Catalan Music
Palace of Catalan Music in Barcelona is a must visit in the capital of Catalunya. The iconic building is a perfect example of Catalan Modernism, and it was completed in the early 20th century.
Palau de la Musica has a fascinating concert hall where you can attend a concert or a guided tour. For example you can see flamenco dance shows and classical choral and chamber music concerts. One of its most remarkable features is its abundant use of natural light, which floods the interior with a warm glow.
The Palau’s Petit Palau, an intimate space within the complex, serves as a platform for more intimate musical gatherings, providing an ideal setting for chamber music recitals and smaller-scale performances. Besides the flamenco shows and classical music concerts, you can discover the palace with professional guides to uncover the secrets of a century-old mansion.
The contemporary structure features a prominent metallic core enveloped in glass, diffusing natural light throughout its entire interior. This architectural marvel transforms into a harmonious hub for various art forms, seamlessly integrating sculpture, mosaics, stained glass, and wrought iron. The entrance to the stage is adorned as a homage to the world of music, showcasing iconic figures like Ludwig Van Beethoven and Josep Anselm Clavé.
It is currently a meeting point of the cultural and social life of Catalonia. Also, there is a charming terrace with mosaics and sculptures that, when you see them once, will make you see them twice.
History of the Palace of Catalan Music Barcelona
Palace was designed in the Catalan Modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It was built between 1905 and 1908 for Orfeó Català. Orfeó Català is a choral society that was founded in 1891 and it was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth).
In 1909, the architect received an award from the Barcelona City Council for the best building completed the previous year. Palace was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it is the only concert hall declared as such. More than 500,000 people attend musical concerts at the Palace each year, ranging from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song).
This iconic establishment stands as a testament to the world of symphonic music, boasting a rich history that includes the illustrious presence of musical luminaries like Igor Stravinsky and Richard Strauss . What may come as a surprise is the venue’s role as a guardian of the city’s heritage, harbouring a remarkable collection of historical documents that date back to the fifteenth century.
In addition to its musical significance, it serves as a repository of the city’s past, preserving invaluable records that offer a window into centuries gone by. This unique blend of musical grandeur and historical preservation makes it a truly exceptional cultural treasure.
Don’t Miss These Spots inside the Palace of Catalan Music
Just a short walk away, you can immerse yourself in the historic charm of the Gothic Quarter. Palau de la Música, the concert hall of Barcelona
The Palau de la Música Catalana in the centre of Barcelona is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world. The concert hall and music palace Palau de la Musica was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. He was one of the architects who formed the foundation of Catalan Modernism. Construction of the Palace of Catalan Music started in 1905 and the concert hall was completed in 1908. The project was primarily financed by the community, but financial contributions were also made by rich industrialists and wealthy citizens of Barcelona. In 1997 the Catalan Music palace was declared UNESCO world heritage, together with Hospital de Sant Pau . Nowadays, over half a million people each year attend the musical performances in the concert hall, which vary from symphonies, opera, chamber music, flamenco , jazz, to Cançó (Catalan music).
Barcelona concert hall
The concert building Palau de la Musica is located in a narrow street, the Carrer de Sant Francesc de Paula, in the old part of Barcelona known as La Ribera. Most of the other prominent Modernist buildings, for instance designed by Antoni Gaudí , are located in the posh 19th-century expansion of the city known as Eixample.
The exterior walls of Palau de la Música are made of red brick, and the support columns and façade have been clad with mosaics. On the corner of the entrance, a sculpture of Miquel Blay is featured on the façade, also called the 'Catalan Anthem'. At the top of the music palace's façade, there are three busts; Bach, Palestrina, and Beethoven. The Palau de la Música was built with large windows and what stands out the most is the stained-glass dome that lets natural light into the concert hall.
