Brazilian guitarist, vocalist and composer Pedro Martins is the newest addition to LA's thriving creative music scene. Martins has collaborated with everyone from Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jacob Collier, Thundercat, Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter and JD Beck, to legendary guitar hero Eric Clapton.

Pedro hit the headlines in 2015, when he won the prestigious Montreux Guitar Competition as a young Brazilian prodigy and made a strong impression on the jury formed by Kurt Rosenwinkel and John McLaughlin. After studying guitar and piano as a child, this eclectic Brazilian musician has become a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter perfectly at ease with typical Brazilian genres like samba and choro, as well as with jazz, fusion, progressive rock, and world music.

Pedro has recently lent his playing and songwriting talents to Thundercat’s song It Is What It Is (2020), Eric Clapton’s song Heart of a Child (2022), Brad Mehldau’s Jacob’s Ladder (2022) and Genevieve Atardi’s album Forever Forever (2023). Pedro has also collaborated with Hamilton de Holanda, Michael Pipoquinha, Jacob Collier, and Daniel Santiago, who produced his first album Dreaming High (2012).

As a member of Kurt Rosenwinkel’s Caipi Band, Pedro can be heard playing guitar, keyboards, and singing on the 2017 release “Caipi” (Heartcore Records). The album has received universal praise from critics and audiences alike. In September 2018, Caipi was invited to headline the prestigious Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and so was the Brazilian duo formed by Daniel Santiago & Pedro Martins, marking the first time Brazilians headlined the landmark festival. The event led to Clapton’s participation in Daniel Santiago’s latest album, Song For Tomorrow and on Pedro’s upcoming album, Rádio Mistério (Heartcore Records). Both acts are confirmed for the 2023 Crossroads Guitar Festival.

Martins’ second solo album, VOX (2019), dreams up a jazz fusion sound infused with deep Brazilian background elements and pop rock sensibilities. VOX is the result of a two-year recording and production collaboration with Rosenwinkel and features an all-star cast of supporting musicians: Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, Kyle Crane, Frederico Heliodoro, and Antonio Loureiro.

2020 saw the release of two important albums: “Cumplicidade”, Pedro Martins & Michael Pipoquinha’s first album as a duo showcasing their mind-blowing interplay of bass and electric guitar inspired by Brazilian roots music. And “It Is What It Is”, an album by seasoned Angeleno bassist Thundercat that features Pedro Martins on the title-track and that has been awarded the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B album in 2021.

During the pandemic, Pedro participated in a virtual tribute to Wayne Shorter entitled Native Dancer , with an improv rendition of the song Ana Maria. Pedro said, " Wayne is my hero. The first time I heard his music was inside a beetle (car). A friend played “Atlantis” and I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That moment represents a break in my life where I understood for the first time how majestic and holy the “sense of mystery” can be. And that it's really my ultimate taste in music. Wayne’s music goes beyond and proves that everything at all is possible when you put all your heart and soul into it. it’s the most beautiful thing... In 2021, Pedro was a guest teacher during the ASPIRE week at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, in Netherlands, where students get access to masterclasses and workshops with some of the best artists in the Dutch and International scenes. In 2022, Pedro was nominated Composer in Residency for the Norrbotten Big Band and invited to be a guest composer and performer for the HR Radio Big Band in Frankfurt.

Pedro Martins: the slayer of Arsenal who now has sights set on Wolves

Olympiakos coach takes on compatriot and former clubmate Nuno in the Europa League with the accent, as ever, on attack

P edro Martins and Nuno Espírito Santo were part of the Vitória de Guimarães side who finished fourth in the Primeira Divisão in 1995, one place behind Portugal’s traditional big three. More than a quarter of a century later the two are still challenging the status quo, this time in the Europa League .

Five months after the first-leg draw in Athens , Martins takes his Olympiakos team to Molineux to face his old friend’s Wolves side. Both were given chances as coaches in their 30s in their homeland, allowing them to learn and fail on their way to their current roles, and Martins even replaced Nuno at Rio Ave six years ago.

Feathers have been ruffled by the two this season, with Wolves missing out on a Premier League top-six finish on goal difference and Olympiakos dramatically beating Arsenal in the previous round of the Europa League. Martins is usually calm and methodical but when Youssef El-Arabi struck a 119th-minute winner at the Emirates, Olympiakos’s coach ran down the touchline, punching the air with delight.

“It was unbelievable, a fantastic moment … a magic moment,” Martins says. Olympiakos had lost the first leg 1-0 and when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead in the tie again with seven minutes of extra-time remaining the Greek club appeared to be on their way out. “The team believed with confidence and we were very positive, and if you don’t think like this it would not have been possible to beat Arsenal at home.”

Plenty has – and has not – happened since. Olympiakos belatedly won the league, not that it was in doubt before lockdown, allowing Martins to focus on the cerebral side of management and self-improvement.

“Some of the players worked at home but our strategy was not how many days people were training because this is out of our control and the training is not the same if you do it at home. Our concern was more the mental side and the damage this pandemic can have, so for me it was more to make sure I contacted players daily.

“Many are from another country, they don’t have families, parents, wives or girlfriends [with them], so were here alone. Our concern was to control the mental damage with them, so all the time we were in contact, we prepared meals for them.”

Burnley, Tottenham and Arsenal can testify to the quality of Martins’ players. Olympiakos never back down from a challenge and their plan is to attack, regardless of the opposition, as shown in a 4-2 defeat at Tottenham and losing 3-2 at home to Bayern in the Champions League group stages. The team average more than two goals a game in the league, with El-Arabi top-scoring with 20 and the rest spread across the squad.

“I like my teams to play offensive football, I like my team to have possession – sometimes this is not possible, as the opponents are strong and have great quality, so have a lot of possession. Some of them are of greater quality than my teams’. I am looking all the time at the opportunities to win the game and for that we must play well. If we play well, we have a greater chance of winning. It is more than one philosophy but it is important to be more offensive than conservative.”

Wolves are the fourth English team Martins has faced in the past two years, allowing him to see something of the Premier League’s variety of styles. “Tottenham were Champions League finalists the year before, Arsenal were Europa League finalists. They were tough games but very good games. They have different philosophies; [Mikel] Arteta tried to input one team with possession and with José Mourinho the team is more pragmatic, more consistent. Wolverhampton are a very good team, I normally say a clinical team, as they are well-prepared in all moments. Nuno is doing a fantastic job and I think it will be a very good game in terms of tactics, it will be very interesting to watch.”

Portuguese coaches have eclipsed the achievements of their country’s clubs in Europe over the past two decades, with Mourinho and André Villas-Boas proving themselves in numerous countries, and Martins and Nuno part of the latest crop.

“It started 25 years ago with Carlos Queiroz and now we have good foundations for how we form the coaches and this is important. The level of teaching is very high in Portugal. With our financial problems in Portugal, the clubs have difficulties, meaning they have to give opportunities to young coaches with potential.

“It is the best value we have in our careers, because everyone in Portugal is giving opportunities to young coaches and our schooling is very strong and has improved a lot with coaches like Mourinho, André, Jorge Jesus abroad. Now we can easily understand the game more and this is important for our careers and development. This is why we improved so much our understanding of the game and our methodology.”

It is more than a year since Nuno and Martins started their European campaigns and, regardless of the result on Thursday, the friendship will remain, as one takes another step forward and the other finally earns a moment to reflect.

Get to Know Guitarist and Vocalist Pedro Martins, A Fresh Face on the Global Jazz Scene

It’s easy to get excited about Pedro Martins, a young multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Brazil.

On this edition of My Music on The Checkout, we’ll get to know Martins, who at 26 has toured with Kurt Rosenwinkel and released his own album on the guitarist’s Heartcore label. It was Rosenwinkel who gave Martins the confidence to step out as a vocalist — featuring him in that capacity on https://youtu.be/GNsPrAfQXfQ">a song called “Kama.”

Martins was something of a child prodigy: he remembers hearing and dissecting a Beatles song by age 3. His parents encouraged his practice on many different instruments; by 7, he was making rudimentary multitrack recordings on analog cassette.

By age 16, he had released his first album. It was around that time when his study of Rosenwinkel became an obsession. Martins somehow grabbed an early demo of the guitarist’s album  Caipi a full decade before it was released to the public.

Martin is now touring with Rosenwinkel’s Caipi band; riding a wave of critical acclaim for his second album,  Vox ; and carving out a lane for himself as a singer.

His beautiful and plaintive vocal style also shines on Expensive Magnets , a new collection of homemade videos he created with Genevieve Artadi, of the group Knower.

Pedro Martins records and tours as a featured member of Kurt Rosenwinkel ’s Caipi Band and can be heard playing guitar, keyboards, and singing on the 2017 Heartcore Records release Caipi. Rosenwinkel met the Brazilian-born Martins at the 2015 Montreux Jazz Competition, where the younger musician was crowned best electric-guitar player. “I was the president of the jury, and Pedro just blew everybody away,” he explains. “And it turns out that he had been listening to the music of Caipi on his own since he was 15 years old, because I left a demo tape of these songs down there in Rio, like, eight years ago. “Nobody knew those songs. They were just me in my studio,” he adds. But Martins knew them well enough to earn a place in Rosenwinkel’s band, where he serves as the guitarist’s voice, six-string doppelgänger, keyboardist, and more.

Pedro Martins and Kurt Rosenwinkel have been touring all over the world.  In September 2019, they were invited to perform songs from Caipi and VOX at Eric Clapton’s prestigious Crossroads Guitar Festival.

[View of the Moscow skyline from the Rurik]Our first day in Moscow we took a bus tour in the midst of Moscow’s traffic jams, seeing many of the places we would visit later, including Red Square.

First impressions from a foggy bus window: new and old architecture, restoration and new construction, international corporate office buildings, 30’s Stalin’s “wedding cake” architecture high on the horizon along with new high-rises.

Moscow traffic–people fight this on weekends to get to the countryside.

On the second day we left at 8:30am and took a 3-hour drive through an incredible amount of Moscow traffic (averaging 17 mph) to the countryside, where we visited the Trinity-Sergius Monastery in Sergiyev Posad (that’s the name of the town). The bus lot was packed when we arrived.

The monastery, founded by St. Sergius, one of Russia’s most brilliant and revered spiritual leaders, is one of Russia’s most important monasteries. It’s made up of a complex of buildings, the earliest of which dates from the middle ages. Its beautiful bell tower is one of the newest and dates from the eighteenth century.

The monastery’s surrounding wall more than once protected the monastery and many of the people in the area. One of the most famous attacks was a siege by Polish-Lithuanian invaders, after the murder of Ivan the Terrible’s son, in the Time of Trouble .
