Adventure and Action Punta Cana Excursions

Some of my favorite Punta Cana excursions are in this section. They’re a great way to break the lazy beach days by adding some adrenaline-infused activities to your vacation.

You don’t need to be a fitness maniac to join these tours. However, your physical level should allow you to trek for half an hour in the sweaty tropical jungle and climb a flight of stairs for most of these Punta Cana activities.

Are you ready to get a little dusty? Then, let’s explore the best adventure and action Punta Cana tours !

1. Zip Lining over the Jungle

Zip Line over the Jungle

Wanna see the jungle like Tarzan?

The zip-lining Punta Cana excursions allow you to fly over the treetops of the Dominican jungle. The best place to soar above Punta Cana’s lush tropical forests is the island’s first zip-lining course.

The expert canopy guides will not only ensure your safety. They’ll also provide fascinating insights into the surrounding jungle as you navigate from one platform to the next.

The longest cable extends 800 m / 2,600 ft. above a river, giving you 50 seconds of pure thrill.

The whole course features 16 platforms and 12 zip lines, including the two longest lines in the Caribbean.

Raise your adrenaline levels and enjoy the incredible views of the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range from platforms built within centenary trees. All while securely clipped to the lines.

🎒 What to Bring : Mosquito repellent to keep those nasty bugs away.

📍 How to Book : Join the tour of the awesome 12 zip-line cables course via this link . Pick-up service from your hotel is included.

2. Riding a Buggy

Buggy Tours Are Some Of The Best Things To Do In Punta Cana

Feel the speed of the open buggies or quads , go off the main street and onto the dirt roads through Dominican villages, plantations, and farms.

Reach your destination on a secluded beach, take a dip into the water, and then head back to your hotel to wash off the dust and relax your bones.

✔️ Tip : After a break, don’t try to sit on your seat before cooling it with a splash of water. The dark seats attract the sun and heat up quickly.

🎒 What to Bring : A bandana or a scarf to protect your face from the sand and dust, a pair of (sun)glasses to protect your eyes, and plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book the best buggy tour in Punta Cana .

3. Parasailing over Punta Cana

Parasailing in Punta Cana

Elevate your vacation with a heart-pumping parasailing experience.

You’ll reach almost 60 m / 200 ft. and enjoy a staggering view of Punta Cana’s coastline. Feel the breeze as you look out to the crystal waters and pristine beaches of the Dominican Republic.

✔️ Tip : Try to relax your body into the harness to fully enjoy the flight. Secure your sunglasses and anything that might fall out of your pockets.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear comfortable clothes.

📍 How to Book : Use this link to book your parasailing flight .

4. Learning to Kite-Surf

Opposed to other surf types, you don’t need strong winds or big waves to ride a kite surf.

According to instructors, most people need about 20 hours of training to learn to kite surf.

You’ll start with a smaller kite at the beach and move to a larger one once you’ve learned how to control it. Then, go into the water and feel the waves under your board and the power of the wind in your kite.

When you’re ready, make a few jumps in the air, and don’t forget to ask someone to record it for you.

🎒 What to Bring : Plenty of sun protection to avoid a nasty sunburn.

📍 How to Book : You can book lessons or rent kitesurfing gear at the KBS School .

5. Learning to Scuba Dive

Underwater

A lot of resorts offer courses for scuba diving certificates. You’ll start your practice at the resort’s swimming pool and then go out into the open waters.

Don’t neglect the rules and instructions, as diving can be detrimental to your health when done wrong.

And if you already have a certificate, go directly for a fun scuba dive in Punta Cana !

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll be provided with the gear, so you’ll only need your beach essentials.

📍 How to Book : Check if your hotel offers scuba diving lessons. And if you already have your certificate, join this ocean adventure .

Multiday Trips from Punta Cana

A couple of destinations in the Dominican Republic, such as the amazing Samaná, call for a multiday trip from Punta Cana .

You can either join an organized tour or take care of the logistics yourself. I’ve done both, and I’ve enjoyed the self-paced option way more.

Let’s see what multiday Punta Cana excursions are available.

7. Taking a Road Trip

Road Tripping Dominican Republic

If you’ve read this post carefully now, you might already have a plan for what you want to visit and explore.

So should you rent a car and just do it?

Hell, yeah!

There are no Punta Cana excursions that will fit everything you want to see and do on your visit to the tropical paradise.

Don’t limit yourself to just the things to do in Punta Cana. Venture away from the crowds and create your own adventure. My best suggestion is to visit Samana Peninsula at your own pace.

🎒 What to Bring : Navigation, cash, and a tank full of gas. Some Dominican roads are in poor condition, so my advice is to rent an SUV with full coverage.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore any destination on a road trip is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

Beach and Sea Tours in Punta Cana

Macao Beach - Dominican Republic

The Punta Cana beaches are the top reason you came to the Dominican Republic, right?

So, leave your resort and visit more than just the sand stretch in front of your hotel! These beach and sea Punta Cana excursions are worth leaving your comfy sunbed.

Let me prove that to you in this section.

8. Visiting Saona Island

Sailing to Saona Island

Embark on a catamaran adventure to Saona Island. This is the Dominican Republic’s best-selling tour. When you arrive at the idyllic Saona Island with its palm-lined, white-sand beaches and mesmerizing turquoise waters, you’ll quickly understand why.

Spend the day chilling on the lounge chairs, splashing in the natural swimming pool, or sunbathing on the pristine beach. Enjoy the delicious local cuisine and unlimited drinks from the bar before heading back.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack your beach essentials and don’t forget to apply sunscreen.

📍 How to Book : Catamaran tour to Saona Island .

9. Sailing to Isla Catalina

Sailing to Catalina Island

Embark on a full-day snorkeling adventure to Catalina Island. Explore the vibrant underwater world with a Padi-certified dive team. Snorkel at The Wall , a mesmerizing site suitable for both beginners and seasoned snorkelers.

Encounter vibrant sea creatures like corals, octopuses, and lionfish. After snorkeling, head to Catalina Island’s private beach for a feast. Try the catch of the day and lounge on the beach with a drink from the open bar.

On the way back, enjoy the stunning sunset.

✔️ Tip : Apply sunscreen before diving into the turquoise waters to avoid sunburns.

🎒 What to Bring : Don’t forget essentials like sun protection and a towel. Bring a waterproof camera to capture the spectacular underwater world.

📍 How to Book : Book your Catalina snorkeling tour here .

10. Beach Hopping near Punta Cana

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

Punta Cana and Bavaro offer two of the most amazing, long-stretched Dominican Republic beaches . However, they are quite touristy and crowded in the peak season.

So, my best tip for your beach vacation is to rent a car and explore the coastline north of Punta Cana. You’ll discover several breathtaking, secluded Dominican beaches that feel surreal to explore.

Arm yourself with enough adventure spirit, pack plenty of water and snacks, and don’t forget your beach essentials! Keep in mind that not all beaches you’ll encounter will have a lifeguard or any facilities.

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection, water, and snacks are a must for a beach-hopping day.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore as many awesome Dominican beaches as possible is by renting your own wheels. Compare the best deals from Discover Cars .

11. Offshore Snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea

The coral reefs around Hispaniola Island are spectacular. Hop on a boat that will take you to one of the amazing underwater spots.

Watch, but do not touch, the colorful corals and fishes.

✔️ Tip : Be careful when choosing your tour. Some of these Punta Cana excursions consist of more drinking and partying than snorkeling.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack plenty of sun protection and your beach essentials. The best way to prevent a nasty sunburn is to wear a swim T-shirt and a bandana.

📍 How to Book : I recommend this awesome private catamaran cruise if you’re traveling in a group.

12. Taking a Boat Tour

Wondering what to do in Punta Cana? Take a Boat Tour - Snorkelling and Party

In Punta Cana, you’ll find boat tours for every taste.

You can party, drink, and meet other vacationers. You can watch the coral reef from the safety of your boat through a glass bottom. You can go fishing. Or even sailing.

Whatever your perfect day at sea looks like, I’m sure you’ll find a boat tour to make it happen :-)

🎒 What to Bring : Sun protection is a muse but also bring a long-sleeved shirt or a hoodie. The wind at sea may bring you chills even in the tropical heat.

📍 How to Book : My recommended boat tour includes swimming with sharks and stingrays! You can book it here .

13. Doing Some Sports

Kite

A lot of hotels and resorts offer a variety of sports at their beaches for free or for a small fee.

These might include bodyboarding, beach volleyball, kayaking, football, yoga, or exercising.

You can also do exercises on your own, take a long beach walk, or jog at the beach at sunrise.

And in the evenings, don’t miss the chance to learn some Bachata and Merengue moves, so you can impress your friends back home the next time you go dancing.

The Dominican Republic is also known for its perfect golf courses. If that’s your sport, you’ll surely find a perfect spot to practice your shots around Punta Cana.

🎒 What to Bring : Whatever sport you decide to do, make sure to put on enough sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

📍 How to Book : Ask at your hotel’s reception for the available options or wander the beach looking for local vendors.

Breathtaking Nature Excursions near Punta Cana

Nature Excursions Punta Cana

Deep caves with incredible limestone formations, wildlife-rich lagoons, and mesmerizing views over the coast are just a stone-throw away from Punta Cana.

If exploring on your own, these Punta Cana excursions in nature might take a little bit of planning and research, but the effort is well worth it. You’ll have the advantage of admiring nature’s beauty without other tourists.

14. Watching the Wildlife at the Lagoons

Visit the mangroves at Laguna Limón or Laguna Redonda to watch the birds in their habitat. Both lagoons are protected reserves.

You can hire a boat or rent a kayak on the spot. Explore the mangroves slowly to avoid disturbing the wildlife.

Local guides will give you all the information you need about the rural fishing communities, the lagoons, and the surrounding flora and fauna. They’ll also help you spot tropical birds, like herons and egrets, to make this a unique experience.

🎒 What to Bring : Pack a mosquito repellent to keep the feisty bugs off your skin. Use sun protection and stay hydrated.

📍 How to Book : Arrange your transportation by hiring a taxi or renting a car . Book a tour of the lagoons when you get there.

15. Viewing the World from above at Montaña Redonda

Montana Redonda - Hiking in Punta Cana

Did you know that you can go hiking in Punta Cana? Well, not exactly  in but just a few kilometres away.

If you’ve rented an SUV , you can drive right to the top of the 600 m / 1,969 ft. high Montaña Redonda . If not, you’ll have to climb all the way up. The ascend is not an easy one, as the road is very steep.

However, the 360° view from the top is extremely rewarding. On one side you’ll see Laguna Redonda and on the other – Laguna Limón and Playa Limón in the distance.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll find a small picnic area at the top, so make sure to bring some provisions for a picnic.

📍 How to Book : You can enjoy the best panorama of the Punta Cana coastline by joining this tour .

16. Exploring Limestone Caves

Los Tres Ojos Cave Dominican Republic

The limestone caves Cueva de las Maravillas and Los Tres Ojos are both close to Punta Cana and Bavaro.

In Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders), you’ll see around 500 Taino wall paintings and engravings in black and red. The highlight of the cave is the Water Mirror Gallery, where the waters of the artificial lake reflect the beautiful ceiling of the cave.

The other cave close to Punta Cana, Los Tres Ojos , is an open-air cave formation. As the name suggests, it consists of three lakes, called eyes.

An underground river supplies water to the lakes. Stalactites and stalagmites surround them. Their depth remains unexplored.

✔️ Tip : Swimming in the lakes is not allowed.

🎒 What to Bring : Sturdy shoes with good grip will come in handy.

📍 How to Book : Some tours to Santo Domingo offer a stop at one of the caves. But if you want to visit them independently, I suggest you rent a car .

17. Getting Wet at the Waterfalls

Punta Cana Waterfalls - Salto De Socoa

There are no Punta Cana waterfalls directly located in the tourist area.

The nearest waterfalls from Punta Cana are around 2:30 h drive away. Still, if you decide to visit Salto De Socoa or Salto La Jalda , you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view and a refreshing dip in the waters.

🎒 What to Bring : You’ll need water shoes and mosquito repellent for this tour.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore these waterfalls is on your own. You can do so by renting a car .

Exploring Dominican Everyday Life in Punta Cana

One of my favorite activities when traveling is observing the everyday life of the locals. Unfortunately, not many Punta Cana excursions offer an authentic glimpse into Dominican life.

Organized tours from Punta Cana usually include a visit to Santo Domingo, La Romana, or a short stop at a plantation. But if you want to experience these places deeper, you better don’t join a group.

Instead, hire a taxi or rent a car, talk to locals on the street, sit at a cafe, and observe the routine of the Dominicans.

Below, you’ll find my recommended authentic experiences near Punta Cana.

18. Roaming the Vibrant Capital Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic

Walk the cobblestoned streets of Zona Colonial , the old town. Visit a museum or two, and enjoy medieval and Renaissance art.

Admire the 16th-century buildings and the city’s architectural gem – the cathedral Santa María la Menor. One of my favorite facts about the Dominican Republic is that it was the first built in the New World.

Discover the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus’ son. Don’t miss the captivating exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, showcasing contemporary Dominican art, and providing a glimpse into the city’s cultural heritage.

🎒 What to Bring : Wear sturdy, comfy shoes as you’ll be walking on cobbled streets a lot.

📍 How to Book : The best way to explore Santo Domingo is by joining this awesome tour from Punta Cana .

19. Visiting the Laid Back Higuey

Higuey was founded in the 16 th century. The Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Altagracia dominates the city’s landscape and can be seen from afar.

Experience the vibrant local culture by exploring the bustling market. Colors, aromas, and lively exchanges will show you the everyday life of Higuey.

Don’t forget to visit the Museo de La Altagracia to dive into the city’s cultural heritage and artistic legacy. Wrap up your day in Higuey with a stroll through its charming streets, and observe colonial-era architecture and vibrant local life.

20. Exploring the Diverse Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor

Hato Mayor del Rey (King’s Great Herd) is a rural city, founded in 1520.

The road to the city will take you through small villages, plantations, and farmland. Watch everyday life as you pass by simple and colorful houses with the laundry hanging directly on the house fence.

Once you reach Hato Mayor, find the beautiful city center and mingle with the locals in the gorgeous park.

21. Visiting the Surprising La Romana

Immerse yourself in the unexpected charm of La Romana, the heart of the sugar industry.

Wander through the downtown area, where the striking Art Deco tower of the town hall stands tall. Just a short stroll away, encounter El Obelisco, a captivating miniature reproduction of the Washington Monument. Vibrant murals depicting the rich tapestry of Taino culture and contemporary Dominican themes adorn its sides.

Continue exploring, and you’ll uncover La Romana’s unique blend of history, art, and culture at every corner.

22. Driving Through Picturesque Dominican Villages

Village Life - Laundry

Start the day early in the morning in a rental or a taxi and try to visit as many Dominican villages as possible. Take the highway, and every now and then exit it to follow the bumpy roads through the countryside.

Most buildings you’ll see are colorful simple sheds with laundry hanging in front of the door. Small yards with several plants and trees, and the friendly faces of the Dominicans round the picture.

Try to order lunch in Spanish, as outside the resorts and tourist areas most people don’t speak English. Sit and enjoy the simple but delectable food while watching the everyday activities of the Dominicans.

Note that none of the organized tours I’ve seen include this kind of experience. However, you can easily build your own Punta Cana itinerary .

🎒 What to Bring : Take some cash and fill up your tank. Pack enough water and some snacks. Bring your beach essentials if you decide to visit a beach after seeing the countryside.

📍 How to Book : Renting a car from Discover Cars is the best way to explore the vibrant Dominican villages.

23. Visiting Plantations in the Countryside

A visit to the countryside to see the plantations is one of the coolest Punta Cana excursions to make.

The tour will take you to coffee, cacao, and sugar cane plantations. Taste sugar cane, fresh fruits, mamajuana, and try handmade cigars. Learn about the importance of these plantations for Dominicans.

Afterward, you’ll meet a local farmer’s family, see their home, learn about their work, and try typical dishes. Finally, you’ll pass by a rural school, greet kids, and learn about the Dominican educational system.

📍 How to Book : You can book this immersive tour and explore plantations, farms, and country life .

24. Enjoying the Nightlife of Punta Cana

Punta Cana is packed with nightclubs and bars.

  • Learn to dance Merengue and Bachata or simply watch the Dominicans do it.
  • Go to a show or visit the one-of-a-kind  nightclub in a cave – Imagine Punta Cana .
  • Join a bonfire beach party with live music.
  • Enjoy the Caribbean Pride. The hottest and most luxurious pride celebration in the Caribbean takes place in September. During the rest of the year, you can check what other colorful events you can join in this comprehensive gay Punta Cana travel guide .

25. Shopping for Local Goods

Cigars Factory

You can bring home several great souvenirs from Punta Cana. Here are some ideas.

  • Cigars : even if you’re a non-smoker like me, puffing a flavored cigar is a great experience.
  • Rum : the best brands, according to locals, are Ron Barceló and Brugal. Ask for the extra añejo (aged). You’ll thank me ;-)
  • Coffee : quality and price ranges vary. I was happy with the supermarket coffee, but I’m sure the super-expensive gourmet brands are even better. Not sure if their price is worth it, though.
  • Cosmetics : natural cocoa butter face creams for a couple of cents each are a great bargain and something both useful and good for your skin.
  • Jewellery with amber or larimar stones : while you can find amber elsewhere, the Dominican Republic is the only producer of larimar stones. If the sky blue stones are your color, get a nice piece of jewelry to remember your trip.

As in other touristy destinations, avoid shopping at souvenir shops. You can find coffee, rum, and cosmetics at supermarkets. For cigars and jewelry, find a factory tour. This way, you’ll be certain to buy from the source and avoid scams.

Keep in mind that proper storage is extremely important, especially for cigars. Don’t ever buy from someone at the beach. Even if the quality of the cigars is good, they weren’t stored properly and are way too dry, making them a total waste of money.

📍 How to Book : Your accommodation will most probably have contacts with factories near you. The tour of that factory is usually complimentary. You’ll learn a lot about the production process and can purchase souvenirs at manufacturer prices.

Travel Tips to Best Enjoy Your Punta Cana Excursions

Secluded Beach - Playa Limon

How to find the best excursions in Punta Cana and what is the most convenient way to book them?

Here are a few tips:

  • Check what activities your hotel offers for free . Usually, these are factory and shopping tours.
  • Check what tours you can book directly at the beach . You’ll save yourself the transfer time. These Punta Cana excursions are usually boat tours and water activities.
  • Compare tour prices AND what’s included in the tour.
  • Ask other vacationers what they paid and if they recommend a tour.
  • Ask the hotel staff, e.g. your favorite bartender or waiter , for recommendations.

  • Search and book directly online . Read the reviews of other travelers.

The 13 best day trips from Punta Cana

Punta Cana is not only about staying in resorts, but it is also about exploring the incredible nature and cultural heritage the Dominican Republic has to offer. There are plenty of day trips from Punta Cana which show you the variety of the country, among them the most historic city in the entire Caribbean, stunning national parks with abundant flora and fauna, some of the most beautiful islands you can imagine and the highest waterfall of the Caribbean. All these things-to-do can be reached in 1 to 2.5 hours maximum and are therefore perfectly suited for a Punta Cana day trip. While some of these activities can be booked as a guided excursion, I have also added some 1-day road-trip ideas, so that you can enjoy the best of both worlds. Check out this amazing selection of day trips in Punta Cana.

Completely UPDATED: March 2022

Best-rated day trips and excursions in Punta Cana

If you are searching for the best Punta Cana day trips, you might look for two different things: – the best excursions and guided day trips from Punta Cana and/or – the best day trips to experience on your own, usually with a rental car.

The good news is we are covering both options in this article about the best day trips from Punta Cana. Most of the best Punta Cana trips, such as Isla Saona , Montaña Redonda , Los Haitises National Park or Santo Domingo , are even possible both ways – with a Punta Cana rental car and as a part of a guided Punta Cana tour .

Let’s have a look first at the best-rated day trips from Punta Cana, particularly those which are part of a guided excursion. To find the best Punta Cana day excursions, we have checked thousands of day trips and applied the following criteria: – at least 35 reviews – at least a review score of 4.7/5 points (which means that at least 94% of all clients were super happy with the excursion) – no animal activities or animals in captivity involved (hence no day-trips with Monkeyland, horseback riding or any other activities with direct animal contact) – duration of at least 6 hours to make it a proper Punta Cana full-day excursion

Especially the combination of the quantity and quality of reviews guarantees that these Punta Cana day trips will please you. On average, 95% of the participants are rating the following Punta Cana day excursions as excellent:

As you can see, you can choose from an amazing array of activities when you want to explore Punta Cana with a guide. For a better overview, you can find more information about these Punta Cana day excursions in the following table.

How to rent a car for Punta Cana day-trips

In case you’d prefer to explore Punta Cana on your own, it is best to book a car rental in Punta Cana as most of the attractions are rather difficult to reach with public transport (and taxis are super expensive). Most people think that renting a car in the Dominican Republic is too dangerous or not possible, but the opposite is the case. Especially the roads around Punta Cana are among the best-maintained highways in the entire Dominican Republic and as long as you stick to a few common rules ( as explained here ), driving in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic is absolutely safe .

You can read more about this topic in the article if you shall rent a car in Punta Cana .

In case you are wondering where to get a Punta Cana car rental, I’d highly recommend checking Expedia * and Discover Cars *. According to the price comparison for rental cars at Punta Cana Travel Blog , Expedia offers the cheapest rates for car hires, while Discover Cars score with the most comprehensive insurance packages, which is particularly important when renting a car in Punta Cana.

Keeping these recommendations in mind, exploring Punta Canas day trips by rental car is pretty easy and will guarantee you long-lasting memories from the authentic Dominican Republic away from the crowds.

Once you have set your first step into exploring the Dominican Republic by rental car , you might never want to stop and head on some further road-trips . The best day-trips in Punta Cana

1) montaña redonda .

Montaña Redonda is one of the coolest places in Punta Cana you can have a day trip to. It is a unique mountain with a spectacular 360-degree panorama surrounded by lush mountains and untouched nature. The special features of Montaña Redonda are its giant swings and the cozy hammocks, both being set up right at the edge of the mountain, which allows for fantastic photo opportunities you can’t get anywhere else.

A day trip from Punta Cana to Montaña Redonda is also suitable for both types of travelers: those who’d like to be active during their vacation can take the short but steep hike up to the peak and others who prefer to stay relaxed can ride up with one of the safari trucks waiting at the bottom of the mountain. Once up there, you can have an ice-cold Presidente and enjoy the marvelous views on the surrounding coastline. You can also see Playa Esmeralda, which is the next point here on this list of ideas for the best Punta Cana day trips.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 40 miles and less than 1-hour driving How to get Montaña Redonda: Option A – rent a car ( check rental car prices here *) and head to the bottom of Montaña Redonda where you either hike up or take one of the safari trucks Option B – book a guided excursion here * Further information: Montaña Redonda in Miches – the instagrammable mountain with spectacular views

2) Playa Esmeralda

In the same direction as Montaña Redonda , just 10 miles behind, you can find Playa Esmeralda, one of the most virgin beaches in the Dominican Republic . If you have ever dreamt of visiting a beach where you have 2 miles of beach all on your own, Playa Esmeralda is your Punta Cana day trip to choose. Even it is only a bit more than an hour ago from the multi-billion-dollar tourism industry of Punta Cana, nobody is venturing out to visit this beach. And it’s not only the secludedness that makes Playa Esmeralda unique, it is also the picture-perfect setting with shallow water, swaying coconut palm trees and fine sand.

Unfortunately, a first all-inclusive resort ( Club Med Miches *) has been built in 2019/2020 and opened in 2021, hence Playa Esmeralda is not 100% pristine anymore. However, it is a rather small resort and it is located at the far western end of the beach, hence the main beach and the eastern end are just like pure paradise. The advantage of it: the road to Esmeralda Beach is now much better than before and can be accessed by any vehicle.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to Playa Esmeralda: Take your Punta Cana rental car and head northwest towards Miches. In the municipality of La Mina, take a right turn when you see a sign mentioning Costa Esmeralda. Further Information: – the best beaches in Punta Cana – the best of Dominican Republic’s beaches

3) Salto de la Jalda

The Northwest of Punta Cana, where you can find Montaña Redonda and Playa Esmeralda, hosts many treasures. Another attraction in this area is Salto de la Jalda, which is the highest waterfall in the Caribbean .

The author Chris in the Dominican Republic

Same as Playa Esmeralda, Salto de la Jalda can often be found without any other tourists, it is totally off-the-beaten-track. To reach the highest of Punta Canas’ waterfalls , it requires a 3-hour hour hike (one-way) besides a 2-hour drive to the trailhead. Even this sounds a lot, it is still a wonderful day trip from Punta Cana if you are an adventurous traveler with some hiking experience. The reward of this long-trip will be a refreshing dip into the natural swimming pool, an impressive view on the highest waterfall of the Dominican Republic (and the Caribbean) as well as an unparalleled untouched scenery. This Punta Cana day excursion is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 65 miles and 2 hours driving How to get to Salto de la Jalda:  Option A – for the hiking trip, take your rental car ( check prices for rental cars from/to Punta Cana here *) or a taxi from Punta Cana northwest-ward on the well-maintained road to Miches. Continue in the direction of Sabana de la Mar until the town of Magua, where you turn left into the Magua River Valley. Continue until the trailhead or until the road gets too bad to start the hike. For the trailhead and GPS trail of the hike,  check out my full article of Salto de la Jalda . Don’t head off with the proper experience of long hikes and open terrain! A guide is highly recommendable! Option B – book a fully-guided excursion from Punta Cana to Salto de la Jalda * Option C – book a helicopter excursion to Salto de la Jalda * Further information:   Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

Hike to Salto de la Jalda, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean

4) Cascada Blanca

If Salto de la Jalda sounds too complicated for you, don’t worry, there are plenty of other waterfalls you can reach from Punta Cana . One of them possible as a day trip from Punta Cana is Cascada Blanca, another impressive waterfall hidden in the lush vegetation of the Dominican Republic, but with much easier access if you go with a guide.

Depending on your shape, the trail has a medium difficulty and can be completed in less than one hour per way. You can refresh yourself in two natural swimming pools as there is a second waterfall on the way. Once you are back in the quiet mountain village of Pedro Sanchez, you can head for a delicious local homecooked lunch.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 65 miles and a bit less than 2 hours driving How to get to Cascada Blanca:  Take your car rental ( check prices for rental cars from/to Punta Cana here *) or a taxi from Punta Cana northwest-ward on the well-maintained road to Miches. Continue left in the direction of El Seibo until you reach Pedro Sanchez. Here you should meet your pre-arranged guide. Further information: All waterfalls in Punta Cana reachable in under 3 hours

5) Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón

You see that the Northwest of Punta Cana has plenty of natural attractions to offer when it comes to Punta Cana trips. If you prefer it a bit more relaxed with less action, you should head to the area west and southwest of Punta Cana, where you can find easier Punta Cana day trips which are also very suitable for families (you can find all recommended family activities in Punta Cana here ), small children and the elderly.

The most famous thing-to-do in this area of the Dominican Republic is Casa de Campo, which not only features hundreds of luxury villas and a high-end resort but is also home to Altos de Chavón, a re-creation of a Mediterranean style European village with views on the scenic Chavón River, which marks a perfect day trip from Punta Cana. Here you can stroll along the cobblestone alleyways, take stunning photos and enjoy a café or lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. Once you have paid the entrance fee (25 USD) for Casa de Campo which is mandatory to visit Altos de Chavón, you can also check out the marina and the beach of Casa de Campo. Keep your eyes open when you tour around, you might be able to see a few celebrities, as Casa de Campo is a popular holiday destination for many VIPs such as Robert Redford, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Robert Stack, Vin Diesel and Jennifer Lopez.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 55 miles and 1-hour driving How to get to Casa de Campo:   Option A – Take a very easy drive along the highway leading from Punta Cana towards La Romana and follow the signs to Casa de Campo Option B – Book your excursion to Altos de Chavon from Punta Cana here *

Altos de Chavon in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic

6) Cueva de las Maravillas

Once you have started your Punta Cana trip to Casa de Campo, you can also head the additional 20 minutes west and visit “La Cueva de las Maravillas”, the Cave of the Wonders. The main attractions of this large and illuminated cave system are its paintings and engravings on the walls, which are over 500 years old and date back to the Taínos, the native inhabitants of the Dominican Republic. As the caves are directly on the highway and the walk is guided and well-marked, this is an easy visit suitable for everyone. The entrance fee is around 400 DOP (approx. 7 USD) and you can also see a small iguana zoo.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 70 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to La Cueva de las Maravillas: Take the highway from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo , the caves are approximately half-way between both destinations

The Cave of Wonders, Cueva de las Maravillas, nearby La Romana

7) Barcelo Rum Factory

Close to the town of San Pedro de Macorís, which is easily accessible for a day trip from Punta Cana, you can find one of the biggest rum distilleries in the Dominican Republic : Barceló. The visitor center is located amidst endless sugar cane plantations, where a lot can be learned about the distilling process, the history and the different brands of Barceló. You can choose between the Añejo Tour (15 USD) and the Imperial Tour (25 USD), which mainly differs by the kind of rums you can select for the rum tasting .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 85 miles and 1:45h driving How to get to the Barcelo Rum Factory: Follow the highway from Punta Cana until San Pedro de Macorís. When reaching the junction to Carreterra Mella, leave the highway and head towards Quisqueya. Further information: rum tours in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic

8) Boca de Yuma

One of the closest day trips from Punta Cana is Boca de Yuma. It is that close that it’s also possible as a half-day trip from Bavaro & Co. Boca de Yuma is a little and very quiet fishing village, which is famous for its various local restaurants atop a cliff with a marvelous view on the ocean and the surrounding coast. It is the best and most authentic place to eat fresh fish in the entire eastern part of the Dominican Republic, plates are usually around 10-12 USD. International tourism is almost non-existent here, but the restaurants feature a welcoming and rural charm.

If you want to have a walk before or after your meal of fish, you can head towards the little park of the village with views of the river Yuma, visit a natural swimming pool separated from the ocean just by some rocks (“El Zumbador”) or explore the underground lagoon around a 1 mile away from Yuma for a refreshing swim. To visit the lagoon, ask the locals to show you the way and tip them after the tour. Alternatively, if you want to discover this Punta Cana day trip as a guided tour, you can book a Boca de Yuma day excursion from Punta Cana here *.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1h driving How to get to the Boca de Yuma: Drive along the Punta Cana highway until the Higuey turn-off and follow the road south until you reach Boca de Yuma

Boca de Yuma, a typical fishing village in the Dominican Republic

Another half-day trip from Punta Cana which can be extended to a full-day Punta Cana trip as well is Higuey, the capital of the province La Altagracia – the same province Punta Cana is part of. Higuey is a bustling city with the typical attributes of every major Dominican town: loud, chaotic and cheap. If you are looking for something specific, you can get it here for a discounted price, but have to deal with congested streets, omnipresent vendors and different influences on all sensory organs. As a reward, you can visit an authentic Dominican market, very cheap local restaurants or the famous Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, one of the most important religious buildings in the entire Dominican Republic and thanks to its gigantic arch also an impressive landmark.

Higuey is also one of the best Punta Cana day trips if you would like to try the public transport in Punta Cana , as nearly all Punta Cana resorts and accommodation in Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Arena Gorda, Macao and Uvero Alto are connected with direct services to Higuey. You can read here on how the public transport system in Punta Cana is working . Because of the congested streets in Higuey, I would recommend a day trip from Punta Cana to Higuey by public transport rather than with a rental car.

If you feel that this is too adventurous, you can also book a guided excursion to Higuey *.

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 25 miles and less than 1-hour driving How to get to Higuey :  Option A – by car ( check prices for rental cars in Punta Cana here *), just follow the signs or the map to Higuey. Depending on where your resort is, you can reach Higuey either via the highway or via Otrabanda. Option B – head to Higuey by public transport. Check out this article to see how to get to Higuey . Option C – book a guided half-day excursion to Higuey *

The Basilica La Altagracia in Higuey

10) Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a very popular Punta Cana day trip, even in my opinion it’s a bit too far, hence I prefer it as a 2-day road-trip (check out unique places to stay in Santo Domingo here ) in combination with some other points of interest mentioned in this article .

However, if you decide to go to Santo Domingo for a day trip from Punta Cana, you will see one of the most historic sites of the entire Caribbean – and one of the most beautiful as well. The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo is the heart of the city, the historic center and at the same time also protected as a UNESCO world cultural heritage. Strolling through the ancient streets feels like being in an open-air museum, as you can see colonial buildings, colorful facades and centuries-old landmarks such as the oldest church of the Americas, the house of Columbus’ son or the fortresses back from the 16th century. You can also enjoy the several cafés, historic patios and creative art shops, which all make up for an exciting and memorable day.

Same as for Higuey, Santo Domingo also marks a perfect option if you are looking for a Punta Cana trip by public transport . You can check out all the connections between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo here .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 125 miles and 2.5 hours driving How to get to Santo Domingo: Option A – book your full-day excursion from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo here * Option B – take the first bus in the morning from Bavaro to Santo Domingo (7 am, be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before). In the afternoon, take the last bus from Santo Domingo back to Punta Cana (4 pm, be at the bus station at least 30 minutes before). See more information about the busses running between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo in this section . Option C (not recommended due to the traffic in Santo Domingo) – with your rental car , head along the main highway from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana and look for the car parks right in the Colonial Zone at Calle José Reyes or Calle Arzobispo Meriño. 11) Los Haitises National Park

Los Haitises National Park is another famous attraction and it is no less impressive than Santo Domingo. While it is also quite far and I have described some options for a 2-day itinerary here in this article , it is a perfect opportunity to see some of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful nature and wildlife. Usually, you can explore the park by boat and see frigate birds, mangroves and caves with ancient rock paintings. If you decide for a customized version to Los Haitises on ypur Punta Cana trip, you can also visit the impressive waterfall eco-lodge in the national park and even stay there for a night , which might be one of the most exciting overnight accommodations you have ever had. Read more about it in my separate article of Los Haitises National Park .

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 80 miles and 2.5 hours driving How to get to Los Haitises National Park: Option A – book your full-day excursion from Punta Cana to Los Haitises National Park here * Option B – take your Punta Cana car hire and head towards Sabana de la Mar, a newly built road from Punta Cana. Continue a dirt road for around half an hour until you reach the little national park accommodation Paraíso Caño Hondo *. You can book your national park tour by boat there. Further information: Los Haitises National Park – a wonderful excursion or road-trip from Punta Cana

12) Isla Saona

The last two entries in my post about the most recommendable day trips from Punta Cana are two of the most beautiful islands you can find in the Dominican Republic. The first one is Isla Saona , one of the most visited islands in the entire Caribbean, but also one of the most beautiful ones. Even thousands of tourists are coming here every day, you have to visit Isla Saona on your own to see the beauty of the island . Picture-perfect beaches, swaying palm trees, catamarans anchoring in ultra-turquoise water and a Caribbean charm which is hard to resist are some of the key points of a Punta Cana day trip to Saona Island. Furthermore, the tour by boat lives up its dream of cruising with a catamaran through the open ocean while sipping on a drink and admire the surrounding scenery. Isla Saona is a must-see during your vacation and one of the best day trips in Punta Cana, even it can only be visited as a group tour (or on a private Saona excursion ).

Distance from Bavaro/Punta Cana: 50 miles and 1:15h driving How to get to Isla Saona: the easiest is to simply book a full-day group excursion from/to Punta Cana * (or a private tour ( check prices here *) if that fits your budget) Further information: – Excursion to Isla Saona – everything you need to know for your hassle-free Isla Saona tour – the best beaches in the Dominican Republic (incl. map)

The one and only Isla Saona, the most popular excursion in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic

13) Isla Catalina

The second option for an island day trip from Punta Cana is Isla Catalina , which is the little neighbor of Isla Saona. It is much less frequented than Isla Saona and offers a better catamaran experience (because both ways are by catamaran and not just one way as for Isla Saona ) and better snorkeling conditions. Even though the scenery might not be as spectacular as for Isla Saona, you still can have a perfect day when heading towards Isla Catalina. Fun on the catamaran, relaxing on the beach, some nice photo opportunities and food and drinks as much as you want are some of the key characteristics of this tour. You can read my comprehensive guide about Isla Catalina here .

Hello Chris, Thank you for your travel Blog and the 15 Amazing things to do for free in Punta Cana. We have already booked our flights and accommodations & are now deciding on what day trips we would like to do. I would like to go to Samana. Perhaps stay one night in Samana. Could we book a car for part of the time we are in Bavaro/Punta Cana?? If so can we rent in town or do we have to rent from the airport?? We will be in Punta Cana for a 10 day stay but do not want to pay for a car for 10 days. Please let us know. Thanks so much. Bye the way, I am also German. My parents are from Kassel Germany:)

tours from punta cana

yes, that is absolutely possible. You can rent a car in Punta Cana (in the town of Bavaro or at the airport, it depends where you are staying) and head up o Samaná. The roads to Samaná are well-maintained highways, just in the villages of Samaná it is a little bit more chaotic with regards to driving.

For further information on renting a car you can check out this article: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/general-information-faq/shall-i-rent-a-car-in-punta-cana/

For ideas on your road-trip and accommodation recommendations for Samaná, check out this itinerary which fits perfect to your Samaná road-trip: https://www.puntacanatravelblog.com/adventures-road-trips/samana-3-day-itinerary-punta-cana/

Here’s What You Get

Do you want to visit an area of the Dominican Republic seldom seen by tourists?

If so, our trek to Los Haitises National Park is a true contrast with the all-inclusive resorts and tourist laden beaches of Punta Cana.

If you’re looking for intimacy and authenticity then carry on and read our description of the natural wonder that is Los Haitises…

Haitises means “highlands” or “mountain range” in Arawak (the Taino Indian language). Tucked in a remote corner of the Dominican Republic’s northeast region, the park is a 1,600 square kilometer humid forest with vast stretches of untouched mangrove forests, secluded beaches, ancient caves and the Dominican Republic’s most diverse collection of endemic flora and fauna. What was once a sacred, safe haven for the Tainos (the country’s original inhabitants) is now a mysterious and awe-inspiring draw for tourists willing to leave the beaten track.

And how do you get there?…

From Punta Cana / Bavaro you head north into the eastern Oriental Mountain Range. Welcoming us is a windy, paved road that snakes through rolling green highlands and country villages, along the southern shores of Samana Bay. Your guide, meanwhile, brings the outside world to life explaining the daily routines of everyday Dominicans and highlighting some of the country’s natural produce as you pass countless agricultural and cattle farms. Our highlight stop, during the ride, is an adventurous ascent of the 1,000 foot peak –  Montana Redonda . Known for its amazing vistas, Montana Redonda offers unforgettable views of Samana to the Northern horizon and the Oriental Mountain Range to the Southern horizon.

Once we arrive at Los Haitises…

  • Catamaran  – Aboard our catamaran we’ll maneuver through the meandering canals of the park’s majestic mangrove forests which act as an ideal home for hundreds of species of birds, fish, reptiles and crustaceans. Leaving the mangroves, the scenery opens up into the San Lorenzo Bay with photo-inspiring views of the park’s lush outcroppings.
  • Cueva de la Arena  – Located on a secluded beach, the cave’s several waterfront caverns hold Taino carvings (petroglyphs) in the rock and sleepy bats in their natural habitat.
  • Cueva de la linea  – Found deeper in the forest, this vast cave is filled with Taino drawings (pictoglyphs), giving us a better sense of Taino religion and culture before their society’s ultimate demise with the arrival of Europeans over 500 years ago.

It’s been a long day so you deserve…

Lunch at the Waterfalls

Paraiso Cano Hondo is a cozy eco-lodge at Los Haitises National Park. Transversing the property is a natural river landscaped into numerous waterfalls. You’ll be treated to a typical Dominican lunch of meat, fish, rice, beans, vegetables, salad and fruit. After lunch, swim in the river’s cool, refreshing waters born deep in Los Haitises; and after your swim wind down with some hot chocolate or coffee made at the eco-lodge.

Join us by booking now…

Only a certain numbers of individuals are permitted on the Los Haitises Tour and it’s only available 2 days a week. To secure availability bookings should be made in advance.

For a genuine contact with the Dominican Republic’s history, culture and natural beauty, join us on this unique adventure to Los Haitises National Park.

What an amazing day! With the travel, it makes for a very long day, but it is time well spent! From the 360 degree view at the top of a mountain, to discovering the mangroves by boats, seeing Taino drawings in a cave, taking a dip in a river and seeing coffee, cacao and bananas trees, pineaple and aloes plants, everything was simply amazing and fun. Paolo, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and had an answer to everything. In addition, he was fluent in 7 languages. Although I had not realized that the tour could be offered in French, he switch from English to French as soon as he found out I was a French canadian. Could not ask for more.

This was the only tour that we could find from Punta Cana to Los Haitises, and makes for a long day, but is more than worth it. This was our third visit to the DR, and the tour was probably our highlight. The drives across the island were enlivened by commentary from our excellent, multi-lingual guides, as well as stops in local towns and villages, and the visit to Los Haitises itself was amazing. We took a boat from a remote area through the mangroves and out into the Gulf of Samana, where we saw lots of birdlife and visited several caves. I would say that the Taino pictographs were a personal archaeological highlight, in a lifetime of travel. We had a lovely Dominican lunch at a remote waterfall, and our guide made sure that we were never hungry, buying food from local vendors out of his own money. Highly recommended.

Great excursion. On the way we stopped for fresh mandarins, we also stopped at a locals farm for lunch of crackers, fresh picked pineapples and papaya. Tasted pure fresh honey, unrefined chocolate and coffee. Was all delicious and the people were fantastic. Very friendly and warm. We traveled over the mountains to the park where we boarded a small boat. Down the a canal to a bigger boat. On the way we saw mangroves, herons, red legged crabs, etc. Once on the bigger boat we traveled around the island and the tour guide, Roberto, was very friendly, informative, funny and made you feel really relaxed. There was nothing you saw that did not go unexplained. Then we went to two separate caves that were once used by the Taino Indians before they were slaughtered by the spaniards. Very interesting if you like that kind of thing. From there we went to a local farm where we had a wonderful lunch of fish, chicken, rice, beans, and fresh fruit and great coffee. You could also take a swim in the pond which had its own waterfall. It was a full day but a fun day, well worth the time Best part of our vacation.

This was one of the greatest excursions I’ve been on in any country! The tour through the town was amazing and our tour guide Wilson aka “Pinky” absolutely made this trip awesome! He went above and beyond to make sure that everyone had a wonderful time! I would recommend this trip to anyone! Lots of fun!

Excellent way to visit the countryside and see how the real people of the Dominican Republic live. From Punta Cana, it is a full (13 hours) day trip but well worth it in my opinion. Instructive and entertaining.

The best time of my life! You deserve infinite stars. Kindness and affection, these were really dream moments. I went to The Los Haitises Park tour and it was a paradise. We visited a Dominican home and met local people and they were wonderful! What a great experience!

My husband and I took the Los Haitises National Park Tour in December. We found this to be a great way to get outside of our resort and see other areas of the Dominican Republic. It is quite a long bus ride, but the tour guide did a nice job of telling us about the surrounding areas so the time passed quickly. The national park was beautiful with a nice boat ride. The waterfall / swimming was particularly enjoyable for us. We found the visit to a local house at the end to be a bit invasive, but overall this was a wonderful experience. We would highly recommend it.

This was our favorite excursion!!! Our guide, Roberto, was the most knowledgable, fun, entertaining and enthusiastic, he far exceeded our expectations!!! Learning about the land and cultures was very eye opening and intriguing. Johnathon, the photographer, also added charm to the excursion. I highly recommend this to anyone, it is very informative and you will not be disappointed.

Billy Horschel goes to Dominican Republic. He returns a PGA Tour winner again

  • Copy Link copied

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Billy Horschel went to the Dominican Republic for the first time in search of momentum and came away with a PGA Tour victory he sorely needed Sunday.

Horschel ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to get in the mix, began to pull away with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and closed with a 9-under 63 for a two-shot victory in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

“This game of golf is so fickle,” Horschel said. “You can put a lot into it and not get everything you want out of it. I knew ... I had the ability, I had the talent. I had to continue to believe the good stuff was going to come to the forefront.”

Horschel, who started the final round three shots behind, all but sealed it with an 18-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Wesley Bryan, trying to go wire-to-wire, was bogey-free with four birdies and still only one shot behind late in the round. But right after Horschel made his final birdie, Bryan missed a par par putt from just outside 2 feet and fell three behind.

Bryan birdied the 18th for a 68 and was runner-up, which will get him into the AT&T Byron Nelson in two weeks. He was playing on a sponsor exemption. Kevin Tway shot 69 and finished third.

Scottie Scheffler watches his tee shot on the second hole during the final round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Sunday, April 21, 2024, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

Horschel finished at 23-under 265 and earned $720,000.

He won for the eighth time on the PGA Tour and the first time in nearly two years. This gets him into the PGA Championship next month, and he likely will be in the next $20 million signature event at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Those are the tournaments Horschel, a former FedEx Cup champion, was used to playing. The opposite-field events are seen as a chance for younger players to get their first win. In the case of Horschel, it was crucial to get some confidence back.

He delivered one of his best closing rounds when he needed it — the four straight birdies starting on the par-3 second hole, a 31 on the front nine, the eagle on No. 12 to seize control and no bogeys over the last 30 holes of the tournament.

It was nearly a year ago at the Memorial that Horschel, the defending champion at Muirfield Village, shot 84 and was near tears talking about how low his confidence had fallen. He missed the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time since 2012.

He had shown signs this year with a pair of top 10s, and now has a victory for validation. Along with getting into the PGA Championship at Valhalla, he is assured of starting next year at Kapalua in The Sentry.
