Phantogram formed in Saratoga Springs, New York, US, which is located miles North of the cultural hub of New York City. Their music is inspired by a wide array of genres, but the band’s music is fairly consistent to the shoegaze genre.

Before Phantogram was established its two main members, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, who had been childhood friends since junior high both had brief artistic stints in New York City before they returned to their hometown of Saratoga Springs. After the two returned home they reunited and began to work on some of Josh Carter’s musical ideas.

The duo began performing their music to live audiences around their hometown under the name Charlie Everywhere, but later changed their name to Phantogram after signing with the record label BBE. After signing with BBE the band was quick to release two EPs labeled “Phantogram” and “Running From the Cops”, both which came out in 2009.

Phantogram’s debut album “Eyelid Moves” was released under the independent record label Barsuk Records in 2010 and received generally positive reviews. The album was full of classic songs like “Mouthful of Diamonds” and “When I’m Small”. The album was loaded with jangly guitar riffs, electronic soundscapes, and ethereal sounding vocals that drew comparisons to artists like the Cocteau Twins, Death Cab For Cutie, and My Bloody Valentine.

Phantogram’s “Voices”, which was the follow up to their debut album was released in 2014 and showed the duo experimenting with more aggressive electronic sounds as well as elements of trip hop. The music magazine, Alternative Press, highly praised the album noting that the electronics and electric guitars were impeccably mixed to create a sound that was both exceptionally complex and catchy.

Phantogram’s infectiously catchy sounds quickly garnered them mainstream attraction and has led to their music being placed in several popular television shows and movies such as Teen Wolf, Catching Fire, and Pitch Perfect. Phantogram have also made appearances on many well-regarded late night television shows like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Phantogram has already had the privilege of playing the Hollywood Bowl when they opened for M83 and have played many large festivals such as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Coachella. Other musical artists are also highly fond of Phantogram’s music, which has led to artists such as Big Boi and The Flaming Lips asking Phantogram to collaborate with them.

Live reviews

When I was in Philadelphia, PA I had the chance to see Phantogram with CHVRCHES and Cherub at The Piazza at Schmidt's, a beautiful outdoor venue with a huge screen that enhanced the performance and helped engage those further away from the stage.

From the first note, Phantogram dazzled the audience with a skillful blend of beautiful, lyrical vocals and melodic electronic music that shows the softer, gentler side of electronic music as a whole. With just two performers, Phantogram manages to produce a wide range of sounds. Then they ratcheted up the energy, and in front of a dazzling light show created an atmosphere and sound that didn't leave a single person sitting still. I had always thought to myself that because they played electronic music, Phantogram's music was cleaned up through so many filters and programs that when I saw them live they would sound nothing like they did on recording, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

Sarah, the lead vocalist, has a voice as beautiful and clear in person as she does on any recording, which is positively amazing. Also, in addition to the electronic music, the guitar is real, another treat for the live performance. And Phantogram never missed a beat - they were every bit as in tune, in time and melodic in person as they are on recording.

Add that to the energy of the crowd and the great showmanship, this is one band that is better live than they are recorded or in video any day. I would love to see them again.

Phantogram worked SO HARD.

Their show had a sign out front saying that there were lighting effects, and I thought nothing of it. But then inside, during the show, wow. Their lighting was out of this world, and the effects didn't just "look cool" they were definitely part of the show itself. The look of everything was perfect, like a music video was being filmed. It was like the emergent individuality of the pair themselves, in how the lighting and visuals had such a voice.

The work ethic and vibe of these guys was amazing. I had seen many, many shows at the venue they played at, and this was by far the best show at the venue. You could only hear the songs the way they were supposed to be heard, right there and then. You have this "ohhh!!" moment over and over as each song makes so much more impact in person, as you hear the nuances their music has with extremely expensive sound systems.

I felt so sad afterward to leave. Looking at their next date on the tour I almost bought a ticket and went to the next city's show 80 miles away, then the next 150 miles away. So I left it at one show and savored the one only, otherwise I'd want to see each show in the tour through to the end.

I have to be honest. I'm a high school teacher, and the day of the concert was the last day of our first quarter of the school year. I was pretty exhausted, and when I realized there were two opening acts instead of one, I seriously debated going home. I'm really glad I didn't. I've always been impressed with the sound quality at Minglewood. I've seen a range of artists there from Spoon to Iron & Wine and I've never been disappointed. Phantogram puts on an amazing show. Their lighting rig was incredible, and it made the experience so much better. The band brought great energy, and the crowd was super fun. They played all the best songs, were entertaining, and know how to perform. It was great fun. I would love to see them again.

An amazing and energetic show Sarah's voice is haunting and ethereal with a raw energy that hits you hard and keeps the earworm active into the next day. The video effects and light show add to the frenzy of infection and the multilevel stage with the band stacked up is a unique layout that provides you a unique look into what the band is doing without losing your focus on Sarah, Brilliant!

Most of the infectious hits are covered and spoiler alert; the current hit "You Don't Get Me High Anymore" wraps up the show as the final encore. It can't get any better than this.

Lights... LIGHTS! Seriously though, the lighting was amazing. Disco ball, mirrors, and strobes made the concert really intense. Now lets talk about the songs. Phantogram rocked hard to songs from both albums. Sarah and Josh had a lot of energy and a lot of emotion pouring into each song, ranging from over the top blow your mind to quiet subtle artistic integrity. I had a lot of fun experiencing there show and would definitely go again. My only complaint was that the people next to me were making out and kept getting mad at me for dancing.

Phantogram was amazing! Sarah Bartell has an amazing voice and stage presence. I didn't stop dancing once! I can't wait to see them in MN again! My heart goes out to her losing her sister. Suicide is such a sad and hard concept to understand and being a family member of the one who did take their own life is one of the most heartbreaking things in the world. I lost my step dad almost 10 years ago to suicide and I still have a hard time with it. You got this Sarah! You are amazing! Go get that Star at First Ave!

Open DJ was not good, 3/10. Phantogram took approximately 45 minutes to get out onto stage and start playing after opening DJ. Took way too long for a short show. Phantogram hardly interacted with their audience other than a few words. On a positive note, their depth of field visual display was awesome. Too many rude people in the audience, pushing and shoving to get to the front. There should be security to filter out these people. Overall show, 7/10.

Bob Moses were excellent. Great energy. Great show. Cannot say the same about Phantogram. I'm not sure if audio engineers dropped the ball or this was as designed, but you could hardly hear any vocals. That fact didn't help overall feel and energy of the concert. Phantogram live performance was enough for me to ensure I do not attend any of their other shows and stick to studio releases of their work. Definetly recommend to see Bob Moses live though.

I loved it!!! Great performance, it was everything I expected and more. Her vocals were A1 and he did an amazing job. I can't wait to see them again. They made me feel like I was apart of the show. I felt the energy and it really moved me. Phantogram are really in tune with their audience. It was honesty the greatest show I seen from a band. The production of the show was great as well. I can honestly say that was worth every cent!!'

Creative visuals through the use of a screen and projector, a mixture of new songs and old, and the trippy pop you expect from Phantogram. High energy songs that you can't help but move to, a slow song to take things down, but excellent all the same. Was super stoked that they came to Phoenix and played a somewhat smaller venue to help the show feel that much more intimate. Great performance!

Phantogram Plot North American Summer Tour

By Ryan Reed

Phantogram announced a North American summer tour that kicks off June 2nd in Camden, New Jersey and wraps with a slot at the Las Vegas festival Life Is Beautiful, scheduled for September 20th through the 22nd.

General tickets go on sale Friday, May 17th at 10 a.m. local time. At the band’s website, fans can sign up for a pre-sale that launches Tuesday, May 14th at 10 a.m. local time.

The electronic/dream-pop act issued their third LP, Three , in 2016, but they’ve yet to announce a follow-up record. The New York duo released the stand-alone single “Someday” (backed with a cover of Sparklehorse’s “Saturday”) in 2018, with proceeds benefitting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention — a tribute to singer Sarah Barthel’s sister Becky, who died by suicide during the making of Three . One dollar from each ticket purchase for the band’s upcoming tour will also benefit the organization.

Upon releasing “Someday,” Barthel spoke with the AFSP about the stigmas of mental illness and the grief that results from suicide.

Suicide  is  really complicated, because in a way, it’s like an illness people blame on themselves. Mental health conditions are just as powerful as physical illnesses. What’s dangerous is that people aren’t as educated about it.”

Electro-pop duo Phantogram return with a beautiful single as nuanced as they are, on the bittersweet track ‘Into Happiness’.

Along with new track, they duo also shared a special message to their fans writing how ‘Into Happiness, “embodies the personal journey that both of us have taken since we released Three ; it’s been a long path, coming out of the darkness and into the light”.

Phantogram - Into Happiness (Audio)

It’s been three years since the pair topped the charts with their critically-acclaimed album Three in 2016 and their breakout single, ‘You Don’t Get Me High Anymore’. The album would garner the group’s highest charting position, landing at No.9 on the Billboard Top 200.

Homecoming Dance: Phantogram, Saratoga’s Most Successful Indie Rock Band, Set To Play Upstate Concert Hall

In 2003, a full year after I left college, I briefly returned home to Saratoga Springs to crash at my parents’ place, while I figured out what the next phase of my “real world” adventure would be. I’d spent the previous year as an expat, living in Madrid, Spain, eating lots of tapas , drinking endless  cañas (quarter pints of beers) and teaching the businessmen and women I’d been assigned by my off-the-books tutoring company very little English. (I realized quickly that I didn’t have the patience to become a teacher.) That summer and fall in Saratoga, I spent a lot of time lounging on the couch at my parents’ house watching MTV and hanging out with my buddy Justin, who was also still living in town. And since he was working at Uncommon Grounds, by default, I spent a lot of time there, too. I got to know his crew of barista and bagel-maker friends pretty well. They were a spirited bunch. I had no idea that one of them, Josh Carter, would end up becoming one-half of Saratoga Springs’ greatest musical success stories since The Figgs : indie rock duo Phantogram .

Now, it’s entirely possible, if you’re from Greenwich, NY (pronounced green witch , not the way the English or Connecticutians do), you just stood up at your desk, shook your fist at your computer screen and said, “Now, wait just a minute here, saratoga living …!” That’s because, Phantogram, which consists of the aforementioned Carter and his longtime pal Sarah Barthel, both multi-instrumentalists, singers and songwriters in the band, are the most famous modern natives of the tiny speck of an Upstate New York town that is Greenwich (population: 1728), and you probably assumed, by default, that Phantogram was founded there. That’s actually not the case; as Carter confirms, Phantogram is, in fact, a Saratoga band, because the members were living in the Spa City at the time. But that doesn’t negate Phantogram’s importance to Greenwich; they’re the type of conduit between the “old” and “new” generation that any town tourism bureau would die to have. (Yeah, yeah, yeah,  women’s suffrage icon Susan B. Anthony might’ve  grown up in Greenwich—and however briefly, appeared on an oddly shaped collectible dollar coin —but she never made you want to get up and dance, right, Town of Greenwich ?) Basically, the band is Greenwich’s modern-day Saratoga Race Course: It’s the one attraction that puts the town, otherwise relatively unknown, on the map.

Founded in 2007 under the much-less-memorable moniker Charlie Everywhere, Phantogram were very much a product of the Capital Region’s active arts community—specifically for them, the DIY indie rock, punk and hip-hop scenes. Bands in their orbit at the time included The Kamikaze Hearts (who re-formed to play one of my and Justin’s mutual friend’s weddings) and the Mathematicians , and they hooked up early on with a number of other local bands through the Glens Falls-based indie label,  Sub-Bombin Records . But just a handful of artists, such as The Figgs and Jocelyn & Chris Arndt , have been able to break through the ultra-thick, opaque, plexiglass ceiling of the national music scene that has rarely allowed Capital Region bands get beyond the point of local radio play. Carter says he and Barthel consider themselves lucky. “We’re grateful for the scene that we emerged from,” says Carter.

It turns out that the aforementioned Uncommon Grounds plays a role, however small, in the formation of the band. Carter, who worked at the popular Downtown Saratoga coffeehouse for three years, says that back when he was an Uncommon-er, a lot of his coworkers were artists, Skidmore students and local musicians, and they had the ability to control what was playing in the café during the day. “At any given moment, I was exposed to music that I wasn’t familiar with,” says Carter. “We were always turning each other onto different bands, especially indie bands, while we were working.” In other words, Uncommon Grounds’ soundtrack may have helped sculpt the nascent band’s sound.

Phantogram eventually rose above the noise floor in 2010, with the release of their 11-song debut, Eyelid Movies , on well-respected Seattle indie label Barsuk Records (labelmates include Death Cab for Cutie and Nada Surf), and within the year, there was major buzz behind the band. The album garnered a respectable 7.5 out of 10 from the be-all-and-end-all of indie music tastemakers at the time, Pitchfork —the indie rock equivalent of a first-time author getting a favorable review in The New York Times ‘ Book Review. Fans responded in kind, with the album cracking the Top 40 on Billboard ‘s indie rock chart. That was followed up by 2014’s Voices , which bested their debut’s output considerably, peaking at No.11 on the Billboard 200 and No.3 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts, respectively. It also moved more than 100,000 units, which in the post-CD era, is pretty remarkable. Although the band’s third album, Three , hasn’t pushed as much product as its predecessor, it still charted higher, landing in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, an unheard of feat for a band from our part of Upstate New York. (That was helped, in part, by single “ You Don’t Get Me High Anymore .”) Needless to say, Carter quit his day job a long time ago, and both he and Barthel now live in the Los Angeles area. They’ve since recorded with everyone from Outkast’s Big Boi and the pride of Oklahoma, The Flaming Lips, to pop princess Miley Cyrus.

In between albums in 2018, the band released a two-sided single, featuring one original (“Someday”) and one cover (“Saturday”). The latter was penned by one of the band’s favorite artists, Sparklehorse, whose creative force and lead singer, Mark Linkous, took his own life in 2010, the year Phantogram made their big splash. All proceeds from the single’s sales ended up going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention . Of course, none of this was done at random; the suicide epidemic had hit close to home for the band. “Sarah’s sister and one of my best friends, Becky , committed suicide a few years ago now, and that really affected our lives in a major way,” says Carter. “[We wanted] to spread awareness and let people know that it’s OK to not be OK, and that everybody’s a little fucked up and goes through stuff, [and that it’s OK to] reach out and talk to somebody. [ Addressing everybody ] Please don’t make a permanent decision based on a short-term feeling. Feelings come and go, [and] it’s best to reach out to people and talk.” When I offer that, maybe, one way toward happiness is to listen to more Phantogram, Carter responds that “we mostly write sad music.” (Not entirely true, in my opinion.) Most important, says Carter, is people figuring out how to process their feelings. (And if that means doing it by listening to or playing music, sad or happy, all the better, I say.)

Phantogram

As of August, Phantogram has released a pair of strong new singles, “ Into Happiness ” and “ Mister Impossible ,” and Carter tells me that, yes, the band will be releasing a new album soon, though he wasn’t able to confirm a specific street date. He also says that the majority of the album was recorded at one of the band’s studios, Harmony West, located on Barthel’s property in Laurel Canyon, a neighborhood just outside of Los Angeles, long connected to the music industry. (Everyone from Neil Young and Joni Mitchell to The Doors and The Byrds called Laurel Canyon home at one time or another.) “We wrote some music with some major icons in the music world,” teases Carter, though with whom, he wouldn’t say. “The fun thing about making our newest [album] was that it reminded me of being back home in Greenwich, recording in the [Harmony Lodge] barn,” where the band cut their earliest demos and EPs.

On August 31, Phantogram is set to play a hometown show at Clifton Park’s Upstate Concert Hall, one of a string of tour dates that finds Phantogram playing an array of songs from their catalog and appearing all over the US, Canada and Mexico. Carter’s excited about the band’s big homecoming show. “What’s fun about playing in [the Capital Region] is the energy,” he says. “The fact that we’re back home in invigorating. I think a lot of people that come are proud of us for our success.” (Yeah, Josh, we’re definitely proud .)

Phantogram have now been together for more than a decade—if you’re wondering, Carter and Barthel have always been just friends, not an item; Barthel has been dating  multiple-gold-medal-winning Olympic snowboarder Shaun White since around 2013—and the duo have known each other since pre-school. “We’ve been best friends for a long, long time, and of course, there are times when we want to strangle each other, but for 99 percent of the time, we just get along really well,” says Carter. (I prompted Carter’s “strangle each other” comment with my question, “Have you always been friends or have there been periods where you’ve wanted to strangle each other?,” by the way.) Carter ends the thought by saying, “We love each other, and what fuels making music is the relationship that we have.” So says I: Keep that friendly love flowing, Phantogram. Because as long as the spigot’s open, us fans will continue enjoying your great music. What could be a happier thought than that?

Phantogram Releases Fourth Studio Album, Ceremony

phantogram band tour

Phantogram releases their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Ceremony —listen HERE ! The 11-track album features the band’s lead single, “ Dear God ,” which they debuted with an explosive performance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night—watch it .

Ceremony marks a rebirth and embodies a dark, but hopeful, chapter for the band, which is comprised of lifelong friends Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel . In advance of the release, the band posted a revealing letter to fans unveiling how the tragic loss of Barthel’s sister, Becky, to suicide, and peers like Mac Miller, Chris Cornell, Prince, Avicii, Chester Bennington and more, impacted their lives and influenced the album—read more HERE .

The process for Ceremony began in summer of 2018, after several years of touring the world in support of their most commercially successful album, Three . The album hit Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, Top 3 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart and Top 5 on Billboard’s Top Albums Sales chart. The lead single, “ You Don’t Get Me High Anymore ,” also peaked at #6 on the alternative radio chart. In the midst of what was their most successful chapter—one that they had been building towards for nearly a decade—the pair were still reeling from the tragic passing of Becky. After returning from tour, both Barthel and Carter were finally forced to come to terms with Becky’s unfortunate death.

Barthel says, “When ‘Three’ was finished, I thought the weight of sadness and anger would release after finishing recording. Boy, I was wrong. Performing those songs every night was like reliving the feelings over and over again. After that tour, I was completely drained and spent. After 10 years of being in this band and pouring my heart into everything that is Phantogram, I felt like I didn’t have anything else. I think life was put on hold for a long time for Phantogram. Going through the loss of my sister from suicide was the icing on the cake.”

She continues, “After ‘Three,’ it was a time to reflect in a way we never had before. Life after losing someone from suicide is very confusing. Performing those songs every night kept us stuck in that one moment. It didn’t allow us to move forward and grow as people. When tour was over, we had to step outside of the Phantogram bubble and face real life. It almost felt like we were in survival mode. ‘Ceremony’ was inspired by self-care and seeing how common of a struggle everyday life had become.”

Ceremony features the band’s previously released singles, “ Pedestal ,” “ In A Spiral ,” “ Mister Impossible ” and “ Into Happiness ,” which have received praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Pitchfork, The New York Times, SPIN, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, PAPER Magazine and more. It marks the first project the band made entirely around Los Angeles, recording the bulk of the album at Barthel’s new home studio, dubbed “Harmony West,” (previous albums were made at Harmony Lodge in Upstate New York).

Of creating Ceremony , Carter says, “When the cycle for ‘Three’ wound down, we took some much-needed time to focus on our personal life, friendships and mental health. Going into the creation process of ‘Ceremony’ was a more refreshing approach to making music than how we normally create. We went back to our roots in a lot of ways—making art, listening to records and writing in our own secluded studio in the hills of Laurel Canyon. It was liberating and inspiring to just make music as it flowed, while also having fun doing it. This allowed us to still push our boundaries and create new ideas that we hadn’t explored yet.”

CEREMONY TRACK LIST: 1. “Dear God” 2. “In A Spiral” 3. “Into Happiness” 4. “Pedestal” 5. “Love Me Now” 6. “Let Me Down” 7. “News Today” 8. “Mister Impossible” 9. “Glowing” 10. “Gaunt Kids” 11. “Ceremony”

ABOUT PHANTOGRAM: Lauded as an experimental and alternative band and one that’s never been married to a particular genre, Phantogram —comprised of lifelong friends Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel —have continued to change the zeitgeist for almost a decade by consistently challenging it with their signature blend of hard-hitting beats, guitar-driven dark psychedelia and electronic pop. Since the arrival of 2010’s debut release, Eyelid Movies , the duo has amassed nearly half-a-billion streams, achieved two Gold-Certified singles in the form of “ Fall In Love ” and “ When I’m Small ,” headlined sold out shows worldwide, become a festival staple and toured with artists including The xx, Muse, M83, Alt-J and more. In 2016, the band reached a career high with the release of their most commercially successful album, Three . The album hit Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, Top 3 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart, and Top 5 on Billboard’s Top Albums Sales chart. The lead single, “ You Don’t Get Me High Anymore ,” also peaked at #6 on the alternative radio chart. Three was met with critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Billboard, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, People, Vogue, New York Magazine, The FADER, Stereogum, NYLON, PAPER Magazine and many others. With syncs in major campaigns such as “Into Happiness” in a spot for Apple TV+, “Same Old Blues” in ads for Peloton and Apple Watch, “You’re Mine” in Apple HomePod video and additional placement in multiple TV shows, the band’s reach had never been so wide. The success of the album took them to Madison Square Garden playing with Alt-J and around the world opening for Muse and on their own headline tours, building upon their already rampant fanbase. In the midst of what was their most successful chapter—one that they had been building towards for nearly a decade—the pairwere still reeling from the tragic passing of Barthel’s sister, Becky (also a close childhood friend of Carter’s), due to suicide. After several years of touring the world in support of Three , Phantogram was finally forced to come to terms with Becky’s unfortunate death, which resulted in their new full-length project, Ceremony , their most diverse and liberated record yet.
