Due to Covid-19 fear, on one side people are hesitant to take flights but they are also desperate for a holiday. The only solution for this is a classic road trip. Lonavala, Khandala, Lavasa, Alibaug and even Goa are some of the mainstream places for a weekend holiday from Mumbai. But have you considered the coastal city of Daman? A chill Weekend in Daman is exactly what you need. Daman and Diu are the famous coastal Union territories of India known for their beautiful resorts and beaches. Mind you, Daman and Diu are different cities and almost 14 hours away from each other. Check out the map below

Ok, let’s talk about Daman now. Daman is one of the most budget-friendly places in India. However, it’s underrated as a destination. In my blog on Weekend in Daman itinerary, I would make an endeavour to make fellow travellers plan their trip based on my travel experience.

Drive from Mumbai: 4 and a half hours

Note: Alcohol is prohibited in Gujurat. Therefore, do not carry alcohol if driving from Mumbai. The police will check your car while crossing the border of Gujurat. As Daman is a Union Territory of India, you can get alcohol easily out there and also for really cheap rates.

Where to stay? : Weekend in Daman

Devka beach or Nani Daman.

Do note not all hotels or resorts have opened up in Daman. So call them in advance and ask them about the precautions taken. Here are some of my recommendations:

Things to do in Daman

• Jampore Beach: The Jampore Beach promenade is massive and SUPER CLEAN. It a superb place to catch the sunset. The promenade stretches up to 3-4kms. It’s a perfect spot for someone who wants to enjoy a run by the beach.
• Moti Daman Fort:  The Fort is an ancient citadel that gives detailed insights into Daman’s rich colonial history. It’s a great place to walk around during the day. It is massive and make sure to wear sturdy shoes if you wish to explore the fort from within. In the night, the fort lights up beautiful making the drive alongside the fort even more scenic.
• Jetty Garden: The Garden is a picturesque riverside park, located in the Moti Daman region. It’s famous for it’s Jetty roles by the coast.
• Devka Beach: Sip on some coconut water and enjoy the sunset by this beach. The beach is quite stony so it’s not possible to go for a swim here, but definitely, a must-see spot in Daman.
• Church of Bon Jesus:  How can one go to the Portuguese colony and not visit the iconic churches? Flaunting exquisite Roman style of architecture, this church is a fine specimen of the brilliant engineering artistry of Portuguese. (There are high chances if might be shut due to covid)
• Dominican Monastery: A former centre of theological studies, the Dominican Monastery is a place worth exploring for those interested in knowing about the glorious history of Daman.
• The Lighthouse: The Lighthouse is near Moti Daman Fort and it is an amazing place for photography enthusiasts

Where to eat?

Daman being a tourist destination has a lot of exciting restaurants. Here are my favourites where you have to go !!!

Veera Da Dhaba: If you go to Daman and missed out on this restaurant, you seriously need to go back. This Dhaba is huge and the ambience is completely Punjabi style with so many Mannequins in Punjabi attire. They only play the Punjabi tracks. Apart from the ambience being impeccable, the food is otherworldly. It’s an amazing place to hang out with your friends and you can easily spend 2-3 hours chilling at this Dhaba.

Anand In: When in Gujurat, you have got to have the authentic Gujarati Thali. The restaurant is in Vapi which is just 30 mins away from Daman city.

Mirasol: Not only are the food and drinks amazing here, Mirasol is the whole damn resort. You can go boating by the lake, take a toy train ride exploring the resort, click pictures with the swans or just wander around aimlessly.

Jetty Rolls: It’s a small joint near Nani Daman. The rolls are delicious and it’s pleasant to have them in the evening, sitting by the beach.

How expensive is Daman?

You can find a good stay at a hotel for just INR 1000 per night. The luxury resorts and hotel stays are also not that expensive. I believe compared to Lonavala or Khandala, Daman is a cheaper option where you can opt for luxury at a lesser cost.

How many days are enough for Daman Trip?

2 days are good enough to explore Daman.

Daman may not be like Goa, Pondicherry, or its counterpart, Diu, but it has this amazing vibe that you’d relish. Don’t expect too much when visiting Daman to have even more fun, just let the flow takes you wherever it wishes to.

Daman is one of those places, which was on my radar for quite some time and finally I managed to visit it during one of my Mumbai trips. Diu and Daman are one union territory despite the distance. Daman is one of the popular watering holes for people from Surat and other nearby places in Gujarat. The resorts come alive in this sleepy town over the weekends with the tourists from Gujarat. If you are visiting here than there are a few places to visit in Daman, which can be easily seen in 2 days.

Where is Daman

Daman is 175 Km from Mumbai and 125 Km from Surat in Gujarat. Daman is surrounded by Gujarat on 3 sides and has Gulf of Khambat on its western side.

Though Diu and Daman are one Union territory though they are separated by Gulf of Khambat. The aerial distance between two is 200 Km but as there is no boat service so one has to travel 660 Km by road in Gujarat to reach from Diu to Daman and vice versa. So, practically it’s not advisable to visit Diu and Daman in one trip. Diu can be combined with a trip to Dwarka, Somnath and Gir national park .

How to travel from Mumbai to Daman

Daman is a place where you can spend a few days away from hustle and bustle of the city life of Mumbai. Or if you are in Mumbai then it is worth visiting because it’s a 3-hour driving distance away.

Mumbai to Daman by road

By road in a car or taxi is the most convenient way to travel from Mumbai to Daman. You don’t need to book and plan a lot of things for the trip. Drive on NH 48 from Mumbai to Vapi and from Vapi take a left turn for Daman.

Road conditions are very good and it will take 3 Hrs 30 minutes. On the way, you can stop at Vithal Kamath or may be Mcdonald. I avoid food chains if there are other options.

Mumbai to Daman by bus

There are several private buses from different parts of Mumbai to Daman, even Gujarat state transport operates some buses.

Most of these buses go to Surat or Ahmedabad or other parts of Gujarat and drops you on the highway most likely at Fortune Galaxy square. The buses options from Mumbai are more in the evening as compared to the morning. Check the Makemytrip’s website for bus schedule as they have several options in comparison to Redbus. Auto-rickshaws are available at the dropping point in Vapi for Daman.

Mumbai to Daman by train

There is no railway station in Daman and the nearest station of Vapi is 13 Km. Traveling by train is the most economical and convenient way to travel from Mumbai to Daman.

There are several trains from Mumbai to Vapi and take between 2 to 3 hours. It is very convenient to travel to Daman from Vapi as taxis and auto-rickshaws available outside the railway station.

I traveled by train from Mumbai and taken an autorickshaw from Vapi railway station, it cost me 150 INR till Daman town. If you go to Devka beach than auto-rickshaw will charge 200 INR. A taxi will cost 250 to 300 INR. You have to bargain for these prices.

Shared taxis are also available at Vapi railway station and they charge 30 INR per person.

What to expect in Daman and practical tips

* If you want to swim in the sea or expected the sandy beaches of Goa then don’t go to Daman. There are rocks on the beach hidden in water and sand is blackish.

* Daman is a laid back town where fresh seafood is available aplenty at a reasonable price.

* There are several bars in Daman city infect every hotel has a bar. The price of is alcohol is cheaper in Daman.

* Other than non-vegetarian food, Gujarati food items, and thali is easily available in Daman.

* You can take a taxi for sightseeing in Daman but most of the places are within a few Km. An autorickshaw is a cheap and convenient option.

* If you are not staying at Jampore or Devka beach than leave the place early if you don’t have a vehicle. It is difficult to get auto rickshaw after sunset.

* The vehicles entering Vapi from Daman are checked thoroughly at check-post for alcohol. Make sure you don’t have any alcohol in your bag because Gujarat is a dry state and this can land you in trouble. Even some of the auto-rickshaws make you change into another auto-rickshaw with the number plate of Gujarat at the border to avoid the checking hassle. While going from Vapi to Daman there is no such issue.

* If you prefer peace and non-crowded places then visit Daman during weekdays because weekends attracts tourist from the neighboring state of Gujarat. This is a popular watering hole and party place for Gujarati people.

Daman is divided into two parts, Nani Daman and Moti Daman. The meaning of Nani is small and Moti is big. Interestingly now the Nani Daman is bigger in comparison to Moti Daman. Most of the old buildings and other heritage places are in Moti Daman, which was developed by Portuguese rulers.

Jampore beach

This is one of the most popular and cleanest beaches of Daman. It is slightly outside the main city and market area of Daman.

There are several shacks in line along the beach, where fresh seafood of all types is available at a decent price. The shack owners will show you the fresh catch and after price confirmation, you can get it cooked as per your choice of spices.

These shacks have liquor license also, so you will get a beer and other alcoholic drinks here. Though the price of alcohol is higher in shacks as compared to what you will get in the market area.

Jampore beach in Daman is popular for water sports activities like parasailing, banana boat, jet ski, etc. The horse riding and horse cart riding are also popular activities on this beach. On weekends beach comes alive from the morning though on weekdays crowds are lesser.

Devka beach

This is another popular beach in Daman. The water sports activities are also available on Devka beach though lesser in comparison to Jampore beach. There are several shacks on the beach serving seafood, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol.

There are many resorts near the Devka beach.

One thing which I didn’t like about Devka beach is that the water retreats inside the sea during low tide. The seawater goes 500 to 800 meters inside the sea and the area looks don’t look like a beach. It becomes muddy and rocky. Due to this Devka beach is not suitable for swimming.

Nani Daman Fort / St Jerome Fort

This is a small fort near the jetty. The gate of the fort is still impressive but there is nothing much to see inside the fort. The fort is nothing in comparison to the other Portuguese forts in Diu or Goa . Still, it is an interesting place to visit when in Daman. The view from the top of the fort is nice.

Moti Daman Fort

This fort is bigger as compared to the Nani Daman fort and situated across the Daman Ganga river. The two forts are 4 km apart and Moti Daman fort can be reached by crossing the Rajiv Gandi Setu.

Jetty Garden

This recreational garden is next to the Moti Daman fort and a nice place for picnics. The Jetty garden remains busy in the evening with local crowds, who come here to spend some leisure time. The swings and other activities playing activities are available for kids.

Light House of Daman

The lighthouse is next to the fort and can be seen from Nani Daman beach area also. It is better to visit it around sunset time because during the day it is hot and humid.

Bom Jesus Church

This church is smaller in comparison to the churches of Goa . This church is not grand in size but the alter of the church is beautiful with intricate wood carvings and golden work.

Daman Jetty

Mirasole Lake garden

This lake garden has lots of plants and trees. There are food stalls and restaurants are inside the lake garden. A small toy train inside the park is very popular among children for joy rides. The garden has a water park, which is very popular among locals and tourists.

Places to stay in Daman

There are hotels for every budget in Daman. Most of the hotels are near the market area in Nani Daman, whereas resorts are away from the city. The places which are away from Daman city are within 8 to 10 Km of Nani Daman market.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Daman depending on what kind of accommodation you are looking for. Just keep in mind that room tariff increases on weekend and the same room is available at a much cheaper price on weekdays.

Hotel Gurukirpa is situated in the main market area of Nani Daman and 5 minutes walking distance from the beach. The main advantage of staying here is that it is in the market area and there are plenty of eating joints around it. The restaurant in the hotel serves good food. It is a medium budget hotel.

Cidade de Daman , Gold beach resort and Mirasol beach resort near Devka beach are good 4-star resorts in Daman near the beach.

The Deltin is another good 4-star resort near NH 185 though it is away from the beaches of Daman and market area. If you want to spend time in the resort relaxing than it is a nice place to stay.

Places to eat in Daman

There are several big and small eating joints in Daman. Most of the smaller ones are in the market of Daman or are unnamed shacks on the beaches.

The bigger restaurants with proper sitting arrangements are mostly in hotels and resorts.

The most popular restaurants are Gurukripa restaurant in a hotel of the same name, Spice Galleon in The gold beach resort, and Hotel Miramar. Veera da Dhaba is another popular place to eat, they serve Punjabi food and also installed mannequins showing the village culture of Punjab.

After my trip to Daman, I can say that is not one of those places, which can offer you anything special or spectacular. Still, it is a nice place to relax if you don’t want to do anything. If you are from Gujarat and looking for some drinks then this is the place for you. If you are in Mumbai and already visited Alibaug than head to Daman for a relaxing weekend.

THE 3 BEST & AMAZING PLACES TO EXPLORE IN DAMAN

In this post, we highlight for you THE 3 BEST & AMAZING PLACES TO SEE IN DAMAN . We went on a 3-day road trip to Daman from Mumbai taking the coastal route via Dahanu and Bordi. From our experiences, we shortlisted 3 places which everyone should visit in Daman other than beaches.

On the west coast of India, tucked between Maharashtra and Gujarat is the tiny city of Daman – the capital of newly merged union territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.

Daman is just a perfect place for whiling away some lazy hours. Located within a short distance from Mumbai and Surat, it gets busy on weekends. Known as a drinking den due to the cheap availability of alcohol which flows at every corner, you can see crowds going crazy. As Gujarat is a dry state, people frequently visit Daman in high spirits to get boozed out.

But Daman is not only about alcohol, nightlife, parties, and resorts. We have seen a beautiful side of this lovely enclave. The coastal town is home to a variety of historical monuments and some beautiful churches, which reflect the architectural skills of the Portuguese. Walking the roads of Daman is a sheer delight if you have an eye for photography, where your pictures will exhibit the history and marvels of the vintage old buildings.

A LITTLE ABOUT OUR RIDE

Leaving the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway at Charoti Naka, we turn left towards Dahanu Beach, around 22 km. Riding a motorcycle on a highway and internal village roads is a different experience. We enjoy the ride more when it passes through farms, seeing men and women working in the fields, village houses, and old trees guarding the road with their shades and cattle passing by. All these give a good feeling of being on the road.

We stopped at the Dahanu beach to soak in the serenity. And to give a much-needed break to the motorcycle engine. The ride from Dahanu to Bordi Beach is coastal. The sea stayed with us as we cruised between casuarina trees.

After 30 minutes of the ride, we reached Gholvad , one of the last villages of Maharashtra, before crossing over to Gujarat. While in Gholvad, we saw the vast chikoo orchards amidst the ancient Parsi-Irani bungalows.

Bordi Beach is only 2 km away, which is less crowded as compared to Dahanu Beach.

When in Bordi, visit Chikoo Parlour on Gholvad-Bordi Road and try their variety of sweets, ice creams, milkshakes, etc., made from fresh farm chikoos.

Daman is around 50 km from Bordi. As we entered Daman, the landscape revealed a burst of colonial houses, churches, and vibrant official buildings.

On the outskirts of Moti Daman Fort, The Church Of Our Lady Of Remedios catches attention. The 17th-century engravings of the main altar captivate the senses and radiate an old-world charm. Observing the church feels like exploring Daman’s rich colonial past.

We ended day 1 of our ride after attending the Good Friday mass in the Church of Bom Jesus. The long-standing church completed in 1603 witnessed a large gathering to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

MOTI DAMAN FORT & NANI DAMAN FORT

MIRASOL LAKE GARDEN

• UDVADA – THE HOLY SHRINE

The Damangana creek bifurcates Daman into Nani Daman (Little Daman) and Moti Daman (Big Daman). We could count the colorful fishing vessels moored on either side of the creek. It was a beautiful sight of fishing boats with colored flags having a siesta on the jetty. At the confluence where the Damanganga River merges with the Arabian Sea, the twin forts are each built on the opposite banks of the river.

MOTI DAMAN FORT – The main street of the Moti Daman fort runs from the land gate to the sea gate and houses the famous Church of Bom Jesus , Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary , and the most visited by tourists during sunset – The Lighthouse . The walk inside the fort gave us an experience of the bygone era. It has a large number of cannons beautifully designed with note-worthy carvings. Some part of the fort needs restoration. Old buildings converted into government offices have retained their architecture. There are a few pretty colorful houses with thatched slate roofs. We enjoyed doing photography here.

There are some old trees and well-maintained gardens which attract birdlife. We spotted the kingfisher, baya weaver, drongo, flycatcher, chattering mynas, and rosy bulbuls. It took us 2 hours to explore just the outer ramparts of the fort, which sprawls over an area of about 30,000 sq m giving spectacular viewòs of Nani Daman Fort, Damanganga Creek, Football Ground, and Jampore Beach .

Near the sea gate of the fort, there is a pedestrian bridge that connects the two forts. Standing in the middle of the bridge, feeling the breeze, and watching the Damangana River merge with the sea is best enjoyed when the sun goes down.

NANI DAMAN FORT – Surrounded by towering stone walls, this 17th-century small Portuguese fort looks pretty from a distance, with hundreds of boats moored beneath it. At its entrance from the jetty side, the statue of St. Jerome set above the arch of the gate looks beautiful. This fort is also known as St. Jerome Fort. It houses the impressive Church of Our Lady of Sea , counted as the most sacred place of worship. The old church was getting ready for the midnight mass to celebrate Easter – the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The excellent altar with superb paneling was getting decorated with flowers. The ramparts of this fort gave a clear view of the fish market and made for a good walk over the elegant stone walls.

We decided to spend the evening at this beautiful and well-maintained lake garden in Kadaiya village. The alluring natural surroundings were a surprise treat that helped us shun our weariness and revived our lost energies after a day-long exploration of forts.

A toy train runs around the garden, which is serene and peaceful, surrounded by a gorgeous and clean lake. It is a popular picnic location among locals and tourists alike. In the back, there is a water park. But since we are not resort-type travelers, we kept ourselves on this tiny island watching the swans, turtles, and fishes swim in the lake, the sun pouring its golden smile through the palm trees, happy and smiling faces of kids enjoying the toy train ride, couples and families spending some lovely moments in a boat ride. These simple and little things made us happy.

As the sun sets, this man-made marvel gets enlightened with colorful lighting that enhances its beauty. To see a boat pass under the bridge, through the lighted fountains and swans swimming behind is a visual delight.

The Mirasol Lake Garden has also been used for film productions. It is evident from the photos displayed in the lake restaurant of the crew members of the popular TV serial ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chasma.’

If you do not wish to eat in the multi-cuisine restaurant inside the lake garden, there is a food stall opposite the entry gate serving snacks like maggie, sandwiches, and pakoras.

UDVADA -THE HOLY SHRINE

Udvada should definitely be on your bucket list. Although geographically located in Gujarat, it is only around 15 km from Daman. Udvada is a sleepy coastal town and sacred place for the Parsi communities as it is the abode of Shreeji Paak Iranshah.

Udvada Atash Behram – the oldest Zoroastrian fire temple in India, is situated here. People outside the Zoroastrian community are restricted from entering the temple. But that shouldn’t stop you from exploring this peaceful place.

The owner of the Udwada Bakers – a bakery shop opposite the temple informs us that the earliest Zoroastrians settled in Udvada centuries ago when they arrived in India. And this is their most revered temple. Leaving Mumbai long ago, he settled down here to live a slow-paced life. And summarizing his journey in short, he somehow managed to sell us  macaroons  and  mawa cake  that we happily munched on.

The architecture and design of the temple is very much impressive. We spend time ambling along the deserted and picturesque streets, photographing the old houses and sprawling bungalows. We marveled at the ancient architecture of the town. Quaint houses with wooden railings and sloped roofs are admirable. Few of the old house even had a well in the forecourt.

Udvada is a place where time stands still. It is still untouched and unexplored and devoid of much commercialization. It has a beach which can be accessed by entering any of the bylanes of the fishermen community.

WHERE WE STAYED

Our home stay R J VILLA FARMHOUSE in Bhimpore was located in a very silent and peaceful location. Mornings were greeted with birdsong and sun-rays peeped in through the windowpane.

The other morning we woke up to the meowing call of a peacock. I opened the window, and there it was, gracefully perched on the top of an old wall of a dilapidated structure. It flew and came down to join a flock of herons busy looking for their prey in a stagnant pond. Being a solitary kind, the peacock distanced himself from herons and joined his mate under a tree, and they both started forming a circle until a dog came and chased them away.

A kingfisher perched on a tamarind tree was watching the herons closely. I think he wanted to make sure the pond inhabited some prey before he dived in. The noisy and chattering babblers entered the morning scene disturbing the serenity of the place foraging from one tree to another. And the kingfisher flew to find some better place.

It was time to ride back home again with pleasant memories of yet another joyous road trip.

5 reasons to take a road trip to Daman

Monsoons are on their way back, and people are looking to enjoy the most in their weekends with long drives and escapades to places around Mumbai . When we think of short-drive destinations from Mumbai during monsoons, the first thoughts are Lonavala & Khandala, followed by smaller destinations in the Western Ghats but a quaint little town that is missed by many is Daman .

Here is my take on why you should definitely take a road trip to Daman before the monsoons are over.

The drive from Mumbai to Daman takes you through NH-8. The road is extremely well maintained and because of monsoons, you get great enchanting views of various shades of green along the road. There is no crowd or a traffic jam on the road as lesser people take this route compared to Lonavala & Khandala. Even when you leave the National Highway and turn into the State Highway, the road though not as broad as the National Highway is very beautiful with trees lined on both sides. There is even lesser traffic on the State Highway and just taking a drive to Daman, will definitely make you happy.

As soon as you enter Daman, you come across the fortified city area, where most administrative offices are housed. This is the ‘Moti Daman’ area, which literally means Greater Daman. The fortified structure, black in color and devoid of any carvings, makes its presence felt and fills you with awe. As you cross the Daman Ganga river, you also get a view of a smaller fort near the sea, the Nani Daman Fort. ‘Nani Daman’ literally translates to Smaller Daman. This fort again is devoid of too many carvings, other than the one at the entrance which gives it a grand feel.

Colors of Moti Daman

As you enter the fortified Moti Daman area, you are greeted with a bright, happy yellow colored building. And as you drive down, various different colored buildings follow. The colors and the architecture of the houses reminded me of Fontainhas area of Goa , which was also under Portuguese influence. Most of the major administrative offices of Daman are housed in this section of the city.

Portuguese heritage

Apart from the forts and the multi-colored houses, there is more to the city that gives you an indication of its Portuguese heritage. The churches in Daman also provide an indication of Portuguese influence in this area. Basilica of Bom Jesus is a popular tourist destination in the Moti Daman area. Apart from that as you roam around the old city and market area, you come across several old houses that take you back in time.

Peaceful luxury stay options

Daman is a place where you can just relax over the weekend and the various resort options in the Devka beach area provide comfortable stays with in-house restaurants, beach view rooms, swimming pools and spa options as well. We stayed at The Gold Beach Resort and had an extremely relaxing weekend. The rooms provide a direct view of the swimming pool and sea. Had the beach been a bit more beautiful, the resort could have given tough competition to the luxury resorts of international beach destinations.Tips:1. Do not expect great beaches in Daman. The beaches here are very rocky and consist of black soil.2. Basilica of Bom Jesus is closed during lunch hours. Check opening hours before visiting.3. You will find many shacks and some beach activities at Jampore beach. I found the shack kitchens extremely clean, considering that a lot of fish is cooked there. Also, the shacks have to exhibit their licenses provided by the Tourism Department, which provides some sense of security while eating there.4. While driving to and from Daman, you would want to take a break. As NH8 has a lot of trucks and other heavy vehicles plying, most restaurants and dhabas are neither very family-friendly nor clean. On either sides of the route, there is Vithal Kamat restaurant which provides decent food options and clean toilets.

• Vadodara to Daman Distance: The distance between Vadodara and Daman is approximately 330 kilometers (205 miles) by road. The journey takes around 6 to 7 hours, depending on the traffic and route taken.

How to Reach Daman and Diu from Nearby Cities:

• By Air : The nearest airport to Daman and Diu is the Diu Airport, which is well-connected to major cities in India. Flights from Mumbai and Ahmedabad operate regularly to Diu. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach your destination within Daman and Diu.
• By Train: The nearest railway station to Daman is Vapi Railway Station, located approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away. Vapi is well-connected to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Surat. From Vapi, you can hire a taxi or take a local bus to reach Daman. There is no direct train connectivity to Diu. However, you can take a train to Veraval or Una and then travel to Diu by road.
• By Road: Daman and Diu have good road connectivity with nearby cities. You can reach Daman by road from cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat via the national highways. Diu is connected by road to major cities in Gujarat, such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, and Vadodara. State transport buses, private taxis, and self-drive options are available for travel to Daman and Diu.

Best Time to Visit Daman and Diu:

The best time to visit Daman and Diu is during the winter season, from November to February when the weather is pleasant and comfortable for outdoor activities. Avoid visiting Daman and Diu during the summer months, from March to June, as the temperatures can soar and the weather can be hot and humid, making it less favorable for outdoor activities.

Are you the one confused about how many days are enough for a Daman trip? Is Daman worth visiting or not? I say yes, Daman is worth visiting, and 2 days are enough to have an enjoyable vacation covering almost all major attractions without getting bored. Read here itinerary for Daman and Diu based on our last trip.

You can say Daman is a mini version of Goa, especially for those living in Gujrat & North Maharashtra. It’s like a water well for the neighboring “Dry State” (Gujrat), gives them Goan vibes without driving a thousand kilometers, perfect for a weekend getaway. 

Being a valid substitute to Goa, Daman offers lot of beach activities at the same time Portuguese history to explore.  Unlike Goa, Daman is a place for all, whether you’re age 5 or 65. Although there are many differences between Daman & Goa, read till the end to find out.

We spent 2 days in Daman, visited during its 1st Anniversary of Nirman Diwas which turned out to be an interesting and eventful trip. Those who don’t know anything about Nirman Diwas can read it here in detail.

In this post, I am gonna describe every single detail of our 2 days trip (Ex-Nashik) to help you get a brief impression, but to know more about the places and things to do , availability of parking & parking fees, etc., then you need to read our next blog which is more explanatory and get yourself up-to-date with budget-friendly tips . 

This itinerary will be useful for families who want to have fun as well as for couples who want to explore places and looking for leisure. I can help you with choosing the right hotel/resort for you as per your vacation need .

Best Time to Visit Daman and Diu

October to February– By far, winter is the best time to visit any coastal places be it Goa, Konkan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands or Daman and Diu. To enjoy various water sports activities, roaming around in daylight with less humidity and pleasant sun, to get the clear skies and to watch the perfect sunsets, you gotta go in winter only. You may find tourists rush and surges in hotel prices during November-December due to New Year’s & Christmas holidays.

March to June- It is summer time where weather can be hot and humid. If you are looking for a leisure staycation, just chilling in a resort, plunge in to the swimming pool or may be go to Mirasol Water Park, then this time of the year is perfect.

July to September – It’s the Monsoon season, where the rainfall is unpredictable and not an advisable to visit.

2 Days Itinerary for Daman and Diu

How to reach routes & road conditions.

Let’s start with Day 1, where we will be driving from Nashik to Daman. Google showed us two routes, first was via Trimbak-Jawhar and then the Mumbai-Gujrat highway (NH 48) with a total distance of 190km & the other one via Maharashtra State Highway 22 & National Highway 848, which goes through Umrale Bk., Karanjali, Peint (Peth) with 145km. We choose the latter due to its shortest distance & time.

Hotel Marina (Stays for 2 Days)

We reached our Hotel Marina by noon. Hotel Marina is located in the heart of Nani Daman city, within walkable distance to Nani Daman Beach, Maharaja Market, St. Jerome Fort also known as Nani Daman Fort & Jetty area.

I instantly fell in love with the ambiance of the hotel, which was built in 1864, with Portuguese-themed hotel rooms, rustic furniture, and a wooden staircase provided with facilities like AC, Toiletries, free Wi-Fi, In-house restaurant and free parking, absolutely safe for families & couples that too in a reasonable rate. 

After 4.30 hours of journey, we were tired so decided to order lunch from the hotel’s restaurant & took a quick much-needed nap to charge ourselves for the evening.

Evening: Jampore Beach, Maharaja Market & Nani Daman city

Jampore Beach is known as the most happening beach in Daman, family-friendly with lots of amusing things for children like Camel rides, Horseback rides, Slides & Swings, See-saw, Toys & Balloons, Snacks to eat, etc.

There are some water & beach sports activities for elders. Click here to know more. We spent a beautiful evening, watching the sunset by sitting on the beachside compound wall.

Drive along the beach: It’s a 4 km drive starting from Jampore Beach to the famous ‘I Love Daman’ signboard. You may spot locals, who come here after sunset to jog, walk & enjoy the cool breeze. Driving by this beachside road feels great after the streetlights are turned on.

Shopping at Maharaja Market & explore Nani Daman city at the night: We didn’t want to conclude our day so early. So, we decided to explore shops in Nani Daman city, bought some fresh bread & cakes from a Goan bakery, and went to Maharaja Market (Mercado J. M. Falcao De Carvalho) for shopping.

They have Clothes, Electronics, Fashion & Beauty products, Accessories, Bags, Wallets, and whatnot. You might have guessed from its name that it’s a very old shopping complex since the Portuguese era, now selling imported goods at cheaper rates, you just need to level up your bargaining skills.

Dinner- For dinner, there are many options available, we didn’t have any specific recommendations for you in this category. We preferred to eat in our hotel’s restaurant as the food was good.

The next day, it was 26th January-India’s Republic day as well as the 1st anniversary of Merger Day (i.e. Nirman Diwas ), so obviously there were grand celebrations & festivities lined up for the day. I’ve written a separate post on Nirman Diwas, click to know more.

Morning to Afternoon- Devka Beach, Nani Daman Fort, I Love Daman Sign, Moti Daman Fort & Lighthouse

Day 2 was so occupied, in the morning we went to Devka beach, hardly 10 min drive from our hotel. It’s a rocky beach with black sand, which seems like a regular one. 

It is popular among tourists only because of the beachfront hotels that give direct access to the beach. We proceeded to Nani Daman Fort after clicking some photos. You will find more details in our separate post .

Daman has two main attractions, where you can clearly see the Portuguese influence, Nani Daman Fort (St. Jerome Fort) & Moti Daman Fort , built in the 16th century reminded us of the era of Portuguese colonies that lived there for almost 450 years.

St. Jerome Fort/ Nani Daman Fort: Nani Daman Fort is used as an outpost protected by a high stone wall and inside the fort, you will see a vintage Portuguese-style church (The Church of our Lady of the Sea) & Cemetery, and a School with a playground. 

The highlight of this fort is the huge entrance gate that grabs your attention with the sculptures, inscriptions, biblical messages, human figures, and unique symbols carved on the stone. A Holy Cross & St. Jerome statue on the door is captivating.

‘I Love Daman’ Sign: After crossing the Daman Ganga river bridge you will enter Moti Daman city. Stopping over by this sign to take a photo has now become mandatory.

Moti Daman Fort & Garden, Lighthouse: It’s again an old-fashioned fort with a massive stone wall making a pentagon, definitely larger in terms of area than the Nani Daman Fort evidencing its name. You can climb up on the wall to take a stroll. The entry and exit of the fort are very narrow and short.

This was built by the Portuguese for protection against the Mughals and is now occupied by Government Administrative offices, a Post office, Court, Central Library, and servant’s quarters.

Inside the Fort premises, there are some touristy places where you are allowed to visit like Dominican Monastery, Bom Jesus Church, and the lighthouse.

All those structures have been preserved. We advised you to spend a couple of hours exploring all the attractions inside the fort and get a sneak peek of the 400-year-old history.

There is access from inside the fort to climb up on the lighthouse to get 360-degree views of the surroundings. We stroll around the fort and stopped by the Fort Garden to take some pictures of an Indian Army Tank T-55, which was used in battles with Pakistan.

Moti Daman Beach: Get stunning views of the lighthouse, Nani Daman Fort & Moti Daman Fort from this beach. It’s a nice and clean beach with white sand. On the occasion of the 1st anniversary of Nirman Diwas, there was a presentation of Sand Art on the beach celebrating the merger of union territories Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman, and Diu.

This is the second most popular beach for the evening vibes, where you will find many people enjoying the sunset, playing water sports, and taking pictures. As I said, it was not a regular day, there were events like a Flower show, Sand Art, Book Fest, Heritage exhibitions, Flea Market, Light & Sound show, Fireworks, etc. spread over Moti Daman Fort Premises.

There were lighting and flower decorations everywhere just like a festival. We had an interesting and eventful evening thanks to Nirman Diwas !!!

And this is how we ended our last day in Daman with an interesting & eventful evening. All Thanks to Nirman Diwas !

If you are interested in attending the Nirman Diwas, please check the official website  before making any plans. Daman thrives over the weekends, tourists came from Valsad, Vapi, Surat, Mumbai & Nashik for an escape from the routine.

Daman Vs Goa

• All beaches in Daman are family-friendly.
• Daman is less expensive than Goa.
• Food inspired by nearby states – Gujrat & Maharashtra. Seafood is not their specialty cuisine, unlike Goa.
• Daman is a short place, and all attractions are very close to each other, not much more to explore than Goa.
• Almost all attractions are free to visit.
• Beaches in Daman are either rocky or with black sand. Whereas, beaches in Goa are more beautiful, picturesque, and white sand.
• In Daman, swimming in the sea is not possible because waves are not great unlike Goan beaches.
• Being a union territory, taxes are lower in Daman as compared to the other state.
• No nightlife & no music on the beaches in Daman.
• No shacks & no drinking on the beaches. (It is not legitimate in Daman but some irresponsible people do not follow the rules).
• There are beachfront hotels & resorts offering access to the private beach available at affordable prices. (It can get expensive over the weekends & prices may vary as per the facilities they offer).
• Parking will not be a big issue in Daman and mostly it is free.

Our Lady Of Piety Church

This iconic Catholic church is one of the most beautiful edifices that is known for its breathtaking architecture. Baps Shri Swaminarayan Temple

This temple is located on the banks of DamanGanga River and is known for its beautiful artwork and splendid architecture. It has an intricately designed central mandir that has been built using light pink marbles and it is one of the serene places to visit in Silvassa. The most unique feature of this temple is that neither cement nor structural steel has been used for its construction.
