18 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in the UAE
Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 26, 2022
The iconic high-rise skylines of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rimming long sandy shorelines, have made the United Arab Emirates a popular destination for anyone wanting to mix a city break with some beach time.
Landmark tourist attractions, such as Dubai's towering Burj Khalifa and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre museum offer sightseeing within easy reach of the city sand.
A host of massive malls have made both cities renowned among shoppers as the best places to visit, and both offer vacationing families plenty of purely fun things to do, with an impressive list of major theme parks.
There's more to the UAE than the contemporary glitz of its two major cities, though.
The country's interior of desert and Hajar Mountains are all about big-sky scenery and adventure activities, from 4WD trips across a landscape of rippling dunes to taking on the world's longest zipline over the jagged contours of Jebel Jais.
There's also much more history here than those modern skyscrapers would have you believe. Sharjah and Al Ain are two cities dedicated to promoting Emirati heritage.
For ideas on the best places to visit, see our list of the top attractions and things to do in the United Arab Emirates.
1. Take a Beach Break
2. zoom up dubai's burj khalifa, 3. admire abu dhabi's sheikh zayed mosque, 4. get active on jebel jais in ras al-khaimah, 5. visit the louvre abu dhabi, 6. experience the uae's desert landscapes, 7. family fun at the theme parks, 8. explore dubai's al fahidi quarter, 9. view sharjah art museum's renowned art collection, 10. take a road trip up jebel hafeet, 11. dhow rides on dubai creek, 12. head into the hajar mountains, 13. take the kids to dubai aquarium & underwater zoo, 14. shop in the souks, 15. get active in hatta, 16. skydive over the desert or the city, 17. relax in historic al ain, 18. visit the sharjah museum of islamic civilization.
For many visitors, a UAE vacation centers around the beach.
Late October to May, while temperatures plummet over Europe and North America, is high season here as the UAE's punishing summer heat gives way to winter's beach weather.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the more obvious beach choices, offering city sightseeing, shopping, and theme parks in easy reach of the sand.
For sun-and-sand vacations in Dubai, luxury resorts are focused along the coast west of the central city. In particular, the beaches around Jumeirah and Dubai Marina offer plenty of family-oriented, five star resorts dedicated to beach time.
Abu Dhabi's luxury resorts rim the shoreline of the city's various islands, so resort areas are more scattered across the city than in Dubai. Saadiyat Island, Marina Breakwater, and Khor Al Maqta are the areas offering some of the best beach-focused resorts in town.
Away from these two destinations, though, there are more beach options.
The beach resorts of Ras Al-Khaimah and Ajman in particular are favorite city getaways, while on the UAE's eastern coast, Al Aqah beach in the Emirate of Fujairah is a popular option for beachgoers who want to head away from the crowds.
The Burj Khalifa is one of the United Arab Emirates most famous buildings and the soaring sky-high landmark of Dubai.
Not only is it the world's tallest building (at 828 meters high) it also lays claim to the titles of tallest freestanding structure in the world, highest observation deck in the world, and elevator with the longest travel distance in the world.
A trip up to the observation deck with its panoramic views across Dubai, is on most visitor itineraries, both to marvel at this modern engineering and architectural feat and to admire the dizzying views of Dubai laid out below you.

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incredible beauty.
Fusing contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, the mosque harmoniously blends modern and ancient styles and techniques to create a new interpretation of Islamic architecture.
Both its exterior and interior utilize lavish amounts of gold, mosaic tiles, and glasswork to decorate the mosque's white marble stonework, while the architecture itself blends the various mosque designs of multiple Islamic empires.
Inside, the prayer hall is laid with the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,700 square meters) and illuminated by chandeliers made from 24-karat gold and crystals. While outside, the vast marble courtyard incorporates a mammoth swirling floral floor mosaic of semi-precious stones.

The highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is a major activity center.
You could come here simply to admire the vista of rugged Hajar Mountain peaks rippling down to the coastline plateau from the viewing platform terrace near the summit, or you can choose to match those views with some adventure activities.
The most popular mountain experience here is the Jebel Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline, which runs down the side of the peak for over two kilometers, reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.
For less speed thrills and more mountain time, Jebel Jais's Via Ferrata climbing route offers guided tours during the cooler months, while independent hikers can choose from six marked trails on the lower reaches of the mountain.

The newest and most spectacular museum in the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey through human history.
The collection has been sourced from across the globe and through the ages, beginning from the earliest human settlements to works by the major names in today's contemporary art scene, to demonstrate the links between cultures and civilizations that has threaded through humanity's narrative.
Whether you're interested in world history or art, the museum is a major draw, while the stark and ultra-modern architecture of the complex, designed by prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, is an attraction in itself.

For those with an adventurous streak, make a beeline for the UAE's desert reaches that stretch across the country's southern interior.
There are plenty of adventure activities on offer, from 4WD trips across the desert dunes to camel trekking, sandboarding, and dune buggy trips.
Popular desert day trips from Dubai or Abu Dhabi usually include dinner at a desert camp after a 4WD journey into the dunes, and offer time at camp for other activities such as sandboarding or short camel rides.
Other desert tours allow more scope for wildlife spotting and specialized desert operators also offer overnight camping amid the dunes.
The desert interiors of the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al-Khaimah are also home to a number of luxury desert resorts, where stays are all about soaking up the dune scenery and heading out on desert activities.
- In Dubai, Dubai Parks & Resorts offers four major theme parks rolled into one: Motiongate, dedicated to rides themed around Hollywood films; Bollywood Parks; Legoland Dubai; and Legoland Water Park.
- The city is also home to IMG Worlds of Adventure with rides, roller coasters, and experiences themed around both Marvel storylines and characters for older kids, and the Cartoon Network for little ones.
- If you just want to splash about for the day, though, Dubai's Wild Wadi Water Park is your best bet in town.
- The best water park for older kids and teenagers wanting something more than simply slides is Wadi Adventure in Al Ain .
- Here, it's all about white water kayaking, surfing, and wakeboarding, though there are swimming pools here, too, for when you need a rest from all the activities.
- Abu Dhabi is home to two of the country's most famous branded theme parks both on Yas Island.
- Ferrari World is a thrill-seeker's dream come true, with the world's fastest roller coaster as its landmark ride, while Warner Bros World offers six worlds to explore, from Cartoon Junction for small children to Metropolis and Gotham City with rides and attractions themed around DC Comic storylines.
The Al Fahidi quater of Dubai (also known as Bastakia) is the last remaining fragment of Old Dubai and shouldn't be missed. This small heritage area really evokes the simpler, gentler past of the city before skyscrapers took over the skyline.
The narrow lanes within the neighborhood are lined with carefully restored traditional buildings in typical Arabian architectural styles, many with the wind tower features, which kept houses cool before air-conditioning became common.
Many of the buildings now house small museums, art galleries, and craft shops, allowing you to enter the houses and see typical Arabian interiors.
The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is also based within the quarter and offers walking tours focused on the Al Fahidi quarter along with on-site traditional meals for visitors who want to experience local culinary heritage.
Sharjah Art Museum is home to one of the world's most renowned collections of work by Arab artists and art hailing from the Middle East.
Its permanent collection includes both pieces by the biggest names in contemporary Arab art from throughout the 20th century to the present, displayed in the Barjeel Collection Wing, and art from the 18th and 19th century created by both Arab artists and the European artists who focused on the Middle East in their work.
The museum is noted for its program of temporary exhibitions, which bring exhibits from both prominent and up-and-coming artists to the museum's lower floor galleries throughout the year.

Jebel Hafeet, on the edge of the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the most popular destinations for a quick and easy nature break out of Abu Dhabi city.
The cool mountain air on the summit also offers a respite from the coastal heat during summer.
This is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, and far-reaching, sumptuous panoramas across the mountain's reaches and down to Al Ain greet you all the way up to the top on the winding road.
At the top of the twisting switchback mountain road, you are rewarded with being able to see across the area's vast sweep of desert stretching out in all directions.
The Burj Khalifa may give you that famous skyline view from up high, but the most iconic Dubai views are still taken from the water.
Dubai Creek slices through the city, and the best way to experience Dubai is from one of the beautiful dhows (traditional Arabic boats) that ply the creek.
Sunset cruises (which often come with entertainment and dinner) are particularly popular among visitors, as you get to watch the lights of the high-rises begin to twinkle in the dusk.
For a budget cruise, though, just hop on one of the ablas (local ferries), which ply the water between Bur Dubai and Deira.
The Hajar Mountains scythe through the northern interior of the UAE.
For nature lovers, the wadis (dry riverbeds or valleys) hidden within this region are prime territory for hiking, climbing, and bird-watching. Specialized adventure tour companies in Dubai and Ras Al-Khaimah offer wadi tours focused on these activities.
The Hajar Mountains are also great for road trips simply to take in the scenery of rolling, barren mountains.
Some of the tiny Hajar Mountain villages in the emirates of Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah are topped by historic watchtowers and small forts, which make good stop-offs along the way.
One of the most popular Hajar Mountain bases is the town of Hatta, which has become a major activity center in recent years, with kayaking on Hatta Lake and mountain biking in the surrounding area.
Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is one of the city's best family experiences but also offers plenty of activities and things to do for the more adventurous.
The 48-meter-long Aquarium Tunnel, with 190-degree views into the aquarium, featuring over 300 sharks and rays among the 140 species living here, is a fascinating step into the underwater world.
But as well as the Aquarium Tunnel, there are opportunities to visit a penguin enclosure, a crocodile enclosure, and to witness the daily shark and ray feeding times.
For the more adventurous, Dubai Aquarium offers a variety of scuba diving experiences, including shark diving.

For many visitors to the United Arab Emirates, shopping is one of the main attractions.
There are megalithic, glitzy malls by the dozen, but for a more local approach to shopping jaunts, you can't beat the souks (bazaars) .
In Dubai, the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, facing each other across Dubai Creek, are where you head for traditional shopping, with the Bur Dubai Souk, the city's famed Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk all here.
In Sharjah, the Central Souk is one of the city's landmark buildings, while nearby Souk Al Jubail is a foodie traveler favorite destination.
Abu Dhabi has also got its souk areas. The most popular is the modern World Trade Center Souk, designed by architect Norman Foster, with its shops and stalls selling handicrafts from across the Arab world.
The Hajar Mountain village of Hatta is a prime base for travelers who want to experience a slice of the UAE's Hajar Mountain scenery.
While the coast swelters in summer, temperatures here in the mountains, although still hot, tend to be dry rather than humid, making Hatta a popular weekend getaway for Dubai locals.
The turquoise waters of the vast Hatta Dam, surrounded by jagged mountain slopes, is the main tourist attraction, and many people are here chiefly to kayak or boat on the lake.
If you're looking for more activities, Hatta is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails across the surrounding mountain wadis and slopes, many with phenomenal Hajar Mountain vistas along the way. Due to this, it's become a top destination in the UAE for adventure travel and nature-based journeys.
There's also horse riding amid the Hajar foothills and, if you want bird's-eye views of Hatta's mountain scenery, tandem-paragliding.
For the ultimate aerial views on your UAE trip, take to the skies for a tandem sky dive.
Tandem sky diving experiences are offered at two very different locations in Dubai:
Either opt for the city site , where sky divers take in vistas over the Dubai coastline with bird's-eye panoramas of the Palm Jumeirah island complex below, or head out to the desert site for views of undulating desert dunes and arid plateau as you descend.
Whichever you choose, both experiences provide one of the most thrilling sightseeing opportunities in the country.
Sky diving is available throughout the year at the city site, and the desert site closes during the summer months. Be aware, though, that sky diving is a weather-dependent activity, so it can be called off due to wind and visibility issues. If this happens, you will be offered either a full refund or a rescheduled spot.

The old caravan route stop-off of Al Ain, with its sprawling date palm oasis, is today a favorite getaway destination from Abu Dhabi.
For families, the major attractions are Al Ain's vast zoo, acclaimed for its conservation work and home to a safari-style experience, and the Wadi Adventure water park , with its white water rafting facility, as well as a bundle of more typical water park rides.
Once home to the ruling Al Nayyan family, Al Ain is also one of the UAE's most important historic destinations, with the Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Qasr Al Muwaiji, all well-preserved remnants from the era before the oil boom.
To peek into the deeper past, the 5,000-year-old Umm Al Nar tombs at Al Ain's Hili Archaeological Park are one of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites .
Sharjah's Museum of Islamic Civilization is the only museum in the country to focus on the breadth of Islamic history.
The collection inside traces Islam's course from the very early years to the spread of the Islamic empires through Asia and Africa, and explores the vast diversity of culture and art throughout the Islamic world.
As well as a wealth of artifacts and art objects, certain displays focus on separate facets of the Islamic faith and specific eras in Islam's history. Some displays feature rare manuscripts and religious documents, and tourists will find them easy to understand thanks to excellent information boards throughout.

18 BEST Places to Visit in the UAE

Looking for the best places to visit in UAE? From the architecture of Abu Dhabi to the beaches of Fujairah, here is my itinerary for the entire UAE!
There’s more to the United Arab Emirates than just Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Don’t believe me? Then let me show you the best places to visit in UAE! And we’re not just talking about a few attractions scattered around but some of the best things to do IN EACH STATE!
Even though Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the two largest Emirates making up more than 90% of the UAE, there are still five other Emirates you can visit.
After my most recent trip travelling around all seven Emirates with Rotana Hotels , these are the best places to visit in UAE. If you’re looking for an incredible holiday in the Middle East then make sure you tick off a few of these things!
If you’re planning a trip to the Middle East , then check out my guides to Dubai and Oman for a little bit of inspiration.
What to do in UAE
One thing that really bugs me is when people say “I don’t see the point of visiting the UAE, there’s nothing to do there…”
Well, on my first day there I wandered around the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (arguably my favourite mosque in the world), took in Picasso, Pollock and other world-class artists at the Louvre, acted like a big kid and went on all the rides at Warner Bros World before coming back to my hotel for a relaxing massage and an amazing dinner.
Nothing to do there? That was just one day in Abu Dhabi, let along the rest of the UAE!
Let me say this now, the UAE is an incredible place for your holiday. It really does have a little bit of everything (including an indoor ski centre in Dubai!)
So, if you’re thinking of exploring this part of the Middle East, here’s where I recommend what to do in UAE.
Abu Dhabi is the largest Emirate in UAE and it is the official capital too.
It is a city full of superlatives – it is home to the world’s largest hand-woven carpet, the world’s heaviest chandelier, the world’s fastest rollercoaster, the tower with the greatest lean. This is a place that certainly doesn’t mind breaking world records!
I’ve been to Abu Dhabi a couple of times now and I really like it there. The mixture of amazing architecture and high-adrenaline adventure activities in the UAE make it the perfect place to start your trip.
Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
I think the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is my favourite mosque in the world.
Even though this place is relatively new (it first opened in 2007), it has become a shining light for Abu Dhabi.
The mosque is completely free to enter (men must wear trousers, women must be covered) and is open from 9am till 10pm.
This is where you’ll find the world’s largest handwoven carpet (with a mammoth 2.6 billion knots) and the world’s heaviest chandelier weighing in at 12 tons. For me, this is one of the top places to visit in Abu Dhabi.
Take in the amazing architecture at The Louvre
The Louvre opened its doors in 2017 and it is the sister museum to the one in Paris.
Much like the one in Paris, the Louvre houses some incredible pieces of art from antiquity all the way to the modern day.
However, the building itself is like one giant display showcasing the amazing architecture in Abu Dhabi.
Outside it looks like a futuristic spaceship, but once you get to the main hall it really opens up into this stunning space that blends sharp edges with reflective water features. Just stunning.
Be a big kid again at WB World
This is another place that’s just opened up in Abu Dhabi and is one of the best tourist attractions in UAE.
Opposite Ferrari World (which is home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster), WB World Abu Dhabi is a bit more sedate. Saying that, there are some fantastic rides here and its fun for all ages.
Being a comic book fan, I really enjoyed ‘Gotham City’ which was home to the Batman and Riddler rides, but I also enjoyed ‘Bedrock’ with the Flintstones ride.
Also, WB World is all indoors so this is a great place to head when it gets too hot outside. WB World is one of the new places to visit in UAE and it’s perfect for families too.
Spot dolphins at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas
Yes, you really can see dolphins in the UAE!
While I was staying at the Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, I went for an early morning walk along the beach and I was lucky enough to see dolphins backflipping right in front of my face.
They were literally 10 metres away from me just off the beach and they were putting on quite the show.
This really was one of the highlights of my trip to the UAE – hopefully you’ll see dolphins too. If not, you can always go for a swim!
Where to stay in Abu Dhabi – Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas
Even though Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, it packs a big punch.
The beaches are beautiful here with hardly anyone on them, especially compared to those of Dubai. Also, the Corniche is a really popular place where locals like to bbq and have a picnic. Ajman is one of the most historic places in the UAE and it still has a number of customs and traditions there.
Learn about the pearl diving industry
Before the oil boom, pearl diving used to be one of the biggest industries in the UAE.
As the name suggests, this is where people used to dive for oysters to see if they had a valuable pearl inside them. Expeditions used to take weeks, and if a boat came back with a few pearls it was considered a success.
These days the pearl diving industry has changed and the best way of learning about it all is aboard the Ajman Pearl .
This is a tour that takes you around the mangroves of Ajman where you learn all about the history of pearls and how they’re grown.
Not only that, you also have the chance of opening up an oyster to see if there’s a pearl inside. If there is, you get to keep it!
When we cracked one open, nestled under the flesh of the oyster was the biggest pearl I’ve ever seen. I know it sounds set up but the pearl genuinely came from the oyster! No tricks or anything.
If you’re on your honeymoon or are on a romantic holiday then I’d really recommend this activity.
Enjoy lunch by the beach
This is one of the top things to do in Ajman. As I said, the beaches here are absolutely beautiful without any of the people.
While I was travelling in the UAE, we stopped off at the beach in Ajman for lunch and it was bliss. There was only one other family around, otherwise we had the beach to ourselves.
There are several beach huts you can sit in to avoid the sun (it was a tepid 38 degrees when I was there) and it’s very relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of city life.
Dubai . It is a city that has it all.
From towering skyscrapers to crazy malls with ice rinks in them to beautiful beaches (often with a camel or two walking by!), there really is something for everyone in Dubai.
I’ve been to Dubai a couple of times now and it’s hard not to like the energy of the city. There’s always something going on at a million miles an hour and I love the fast-paced life there – it reminds me a little bit of London in that sense, just very hot!
With that in mind, here are some of the best things to do in Dubai.
Museum of Illusion
The Museum of Illusion in Dubai has just opened up in the summer of 2018 making it one of the newest places to visit in the UAE.
From mind-bending illusions to looking like a giant, this is good ol’ fashioned family fun. I can imagine it’s the perfect place to bring the kids.
They really encourage taking photos here and the staff even took a few so make sure you bring your camera along. Oh, and your sense of humour too!
Eat at Teatro in Towers Rotana
One of the places everyone said we had to eat at was Teatro in Towers Rotana . This is constantly ranked as one of the best restaurants in Dubai and it certainly did not disappoint!
The food is a fusion of east meets west so expect to find things on the menu like wasabi tempura prawns and miso-glazed seabass.
We had the sushi platter and it was delicious. Very authentic with their own sushi master and it was incredibly pretty too. It was food that looked good and tasted even better.
If you’re looking for an amazing place for dinner in Dubai then I’d really recommend Teatro.
Explore Dubai Creek on an abra boat
Here’s a little money saving tip for you. Abra boats are cheapest way of getting around Dubai with a one-way ticket costing just 20p.
Not only are they a cheap way of getting around, they are also great for seeing the city from the water. Also, this is such a traditional mode of transport that it feels very nostalgic too.
The best place to get an abra is near the Old Quarter and on Dubai Creek . The boats are very regular every 10 minutes and some leave before if they’re full. This really is such a good way of sightseeing Dubai!
Take in the skyline from Al Bandar Rotana
I’ll put my hand up right now and say I’m a sucker for a good skyline. Well, in Dubai they have one the world’s best.
I could spend all day roaming around Dubai in search of the best photo spots, but one of my favs is at the top of the Al Bandar Rotana.
Up on the 18 th floor you can grab a cocktail from Gusto Restaurant , sit on the terrace and watch the sunset. Or, if you’re like me, you can take photos of the sunset! Still, this really is one of the best views of Dubai.
Where to stay in Dubai – Al Bandar Rotana or the Towers Rotana Dubai
If you’re wondering where to go in UAE, let me introduce you to Fujairah. At times this place feels like it’s a million miles away from the other Emirates.
Not only do you get gorgeous beaches here, but you also get the Hajar Mountains in the background giving this an otherworldly feel. It wasn’t the Luna landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile but it wasn’t far off!
If you’re looking for a place to really kick back and relax then there are a number of 5* resorts here.
Also, if diving and snorkeling are your thing then this is where you’ll find it in the UAE.
Here are some of the best tourist places in Fujairah.
Go snorkeling at Snoopy Island
The main place to go snorkeling in Fujairah is Snoopy Island.
This was a short 10-minute boat ride along the coast from where I was staying at the Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa and it’s a really good snorkeling spot.
Snoopy Island is a large rock protruding from the sea and there’s a small reef surrounding this teeming with life.
Unfortunately we didn’t see any turtles but they are really common in the area. But we did see lots of other little fishes and it was a great way to spend an afternoon.
Take in the landscape while parasailing
I always love parasailing wherever I am around the world – it always reminds me of family holidays when I was younger.
So, when I saw you could go parasailing at Fujairah I signed up immediately. It was definitely one of my favourite things to do in the UAE .
One of the best things about going parasailing in Fujairah is the landscapes. You really get to see the Hajar Mountains from high up with the bright blue water glistening below. So much fun!
Where to stay in Fujairah – Fujairah Rotana Resort & Spa
Ras Al Khaimah
Ras Al Khaimah is quickly establishing itself as the adventure capital of the UAE. For me, this is up there with the best places in UAE so make sure you add it to your list.
Not only are there activities like jet skiing along the coast and hiking up in the Jebel Jais Mountains, but it is also home to the world’s longest zipline! This is an adventure activity like no other and it is such a rush.
Ras Al Khaimah is also home to a few all-inclusive resorts (bet you didn’t think you’d find them in the UAE!) That means if you’re looking for a proper holiday by the beach and the by the pool then you can’t go wrong with RAK. And yes, you can drink alcohol here. I told you it was surprising!
Ras Al Khaimah is one of the best places to visit from Dubai for people looking for a more relaxed state and a lazier beach holiday.
Take on the world’s longest zipline
Obviously I love my adventure activities and they don’t come much better than this.
So, how long is the world’s longest zipline? It’s 2.8kms where you reach speeds of up to 160kph and it is an adrenaline-pumping 2 minutes flying through the mountains of Jebel Jais.
You fly in the superman position facing forward, and once you reach terminal velocity it’s actually quite relaxing (I really mean that!) Also, it’s a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of the mountains too.
You can book tickets with ToroVerde Ras al Khaimah . We arrived on the day so you don’t need to book in advanced if you don’t want to. This is definitely one of the best new places to visit in UAE that’s for sure!
Enjoy beautiful sunsets at The Cove Rotana Resort
One of the best places you can stay in Ras Al Khaimah is The Cove Rotana Resort .
This is an all-inclusive resort that looks a little like the Santorini of the UAE.
The Cove Rotana Resort is based right on the beach and it has uninterrupted views of the sunset. This really is the best place to watch sunset in the United Arab Emirates.
Also, there’s a little beach bar right on the beach meaning this is the perfect place to be for those sundowner cocktails before a delicious dinner! What I would give to be back on the beach right now…
Exploring the coastline on a jet ski
Jet skiing is another one of those classic beach holiday activities that I love.
While I was staying at The Cove Rotana Resort I picked up a jet ski for the morning and zoomed along the coast.
Every time I go jet skiing these days it’s with my girlfriend on the back and she hates it when I go fast. From the sound of her screams I always push it too far but what can I say, it’s so much fun!
Where to stay in Ras Al Khaimah – The Cove Rotana Resort
Sharjah is seen as the most traditional and cultural of the emirates. This is the only one where drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun here.
UNESCO declared Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998, recognition reaffirmed in 2014 when it became Capital of Islamic Culture, so there’s plenty to see here.
Also, the skyline down by Khalid Lake is among the best you’ll find in the UAE.
When it comes to what to do in the UAE, I really recommend adding Sharjah to the list. It really is very different from the other emirates!
Drink traditional Arabic coffee
If you’ve never had Arabic coffee before then you’ve got to give this a go.
Arabic coffee is very aromatic and is often spiced with cardamom. Unlike other coffee, it is actually a greeny golden colour and is very bitter to drink.
Most of the time coffee is offered to guests when they arrive somewhere new and traditionally it is drunk for a small cup.
A word of warning – if you don’t shake your cup after you’ve finished it then your host will keep on filling it up until you do! Shaking your cup is a sign you don’t want any more coffee and we learned this during a traditional coffee ceremony when we arrived at Centro Sharjah .
Go for a sunset cruise on an abra boat
One of the best places to visit in the UAE is Khalid Lake.
Not only do you get the gorgeous skyline glittering in the water, but you also get to see the old and the new blended together with Al Noor Mosque nestled between the skyscrapers.
By Al Majaz Park there is a boat jetty where you can hire an abra boat to go on a little cruise of the lake.
We came down here at sunset and it was just beautiful – definitely the perfect time of day to see Sharjah and it was a little cooler too.
Where to stay in Sharjah – Centro Sharjah
Umm Al Quwain
If you’re wondering where to go in the UAE then take a look at Umm Al Quwain!
Umm Al Quwain is a tiny emirate wrapped around an island dotted lagoon and it’s really beautiful here.
This place has a bit of a retro feel to it as there aren’t any big international resorts or megamalls like you’ll find in Dubai, but because of that it has a distinct charm.
Across the creek, uninhabited Al Sinniyah Island is a protected marine environment noted for its mangrove swamp and large colony of Socotra cormorants. We also saw flamingos here too which was a nice added bonus!
Go kayaking through the mangroves
One of the best ways of seeing the mangroves up close is in a kayak.
Even though I didn’t see any turtles while kayaking in Um Al Quwain, it is very common to see them in the area. However, I did see flamingos though which was a huge surprise. I never thought there were flamingos in the UAE but I was completely wrong about that.
I went kayaking from UAQ Marine Club which is like an adventure club with loads of activities to choose from. Best thing about this is they’ve got a pool so you can go for a relaxing dip after kayaking.
Hiring a kayak is fairly cheap (100AED, £20) and I’d really recommend this to anyone passing through Um Al Quwain.
My trip to the UAE was in association with Rotana Hotels promoting some of their best hotels in the region. As always, views are entirely my own and without bias.

Is Dubai THAT Hot? What to Expect Visiting Dubai in Summer
Dubai gets hot in the summer. Really hot. We’re talking up to 50°C (122°F). But is it still worth planning a stopover or even a longer holiday in Dubai over the hot summer months?
Yes, it’s going to be sweaty hot, but it’s also a city built to deal with the extreme temperatures. A summer stopover in Dubai may not be as unbearable as you think – let’s see what you can expect!
Dubai Summer Survival Guide 2024
In this guide to what to expect during summer in Dubai, we run you through;
Dealing with the heat in Dubai
Dressing for the heat in dubai, dubai mall, burj khalifa & downtown dubai, mall of the emirates, city centre mirdif, times square, dubai hills mall, top dubai tourist attractions to visit in the summer, theme parks, outdoor activities in dubai over summer, what will be closed in dubai over the summer in dubai, dubai hotels attached to shopping malls, best dubai hotels attached to waterparks, dubai hotels with good summer facilities.
If you are looking for winter travel in Dubai, pop on over to these Dubai in winter guide
Dubai Summer Temperature – How Hot Does it Actually Get?
Whilst summer averages are reported at 45°C (113°F), it is quite typical to experience daytime maximums up to 50°C (122°F). The hottest month of the year is August in Dubai.
When is summer in Dubai? “Summer” in Dubai realistically runs from May until October .
Exactly how hot is Dubai? Check out this chart for Dubai’s average reported monthly temperatures (1) .
What you feel in Dubai and what is actually reported in the peas of summer can also be two different things! You need to take into account not only the temperature but the humidity, too. It helps if you have a weather app that gives you the “feels like” temperature as well!!
The humidity in Dubai tends to be more noticeable in the latter half of summer, August to September.
It’s also important to note that overnight, although you don’t get the sun’s powerful heat, the temperatures don’t drop below 30°C (86°F). You can certainly see and do much more after dark without the glaring sun and heat, but be realistic about what can be done at night, too.
Let’s just agree; Dubai in summer is hot.
You can learn more about Dubai’s weather patterns and the best time to visit here.
Also check out these posts to learn more about the Duabi Summer months in detail MAY | JUNE | JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER
Dealing with the summer heat in Dubai for most tourists is not nearly as difficult as it might seem. First up, nearly everything is airconditioned to the max – even too cold. You will arrive in an airconditioned airport, transfer to an airconditioned car or Metro train and arrive at air-conditioned accommodation. Even bus stops are air-conditioned in many locations!
Whilst the outside air temperature is extreme, most hotels will chill their pools in the summer months to make them a refreshing retreat. Swimming is still best tackled early morning and late afternoon/evenings.
The same cannot be said for the ocean, however! You will need to be mindful that the salty waters of the Gulf can be too hot for swimming in over the summer (32-35°C/90-95°F); it will feel more like spa water than a refreshing break.
And in case it isn’t obvious, the sand becomes excruciatingly hot in the summer. It only takes burning sand to become trapped in your sandals or flip-flops once to work this one out, let alone if you dare attempt to walk on it barefoot!
You should always dress sensibly for the heat. Please don’t have any misconceptions though, that ladies need to be wearing a full head covering or burka! This means ideally, wear loose cotton clothing that is still respectable.
We have a full guide on what you should expect to wear in Dubai here.
A couple of important summer clothing observations:
- Tourists need to note the difference between “resort wear” and what you wear in public. Although this seems to have relaxed over the years (maybe too much?), as a sign of respect, keep the skimpy clothing and bathers only to the pool & beach.
- When walking through hotel public areas, on public transport, in malls and in restaurants, you should ALWAYS dress respectfully for the Muslim country you are in. At a minimum, think covered knees and shoulders for both sexes and nothing too clingy and revealing – yep, you will see a lot of people flaunting this “rule”.
- Stick with cotton/rayon and breathable materials. Man-made materials will leave you in even more of a hot, sweaty mess.
- Temperature drops between outside and indoor air conditioning can be extreme. Make no mistake, you will still want to pack a wrap or cardigan for those indoor blasts of cold!

Dubai Summer Attractions to try in 2024
Whilst many seasonal favourites may be closed, there’s still plenty happening indoors to enjoy in Dubai over the summer months.
If you are looking especially for family activities in Dubai head over to this post to learn about 70+ indoor activities for kids.
One of the world’s largest malls still has a huge amount going on over the summer. You could spend a few days here and not run out of things to do!
Sitting in the heart of “Downtown Dubai”, some of our favourites at Dubai Mall include:
- Burj Khalifa Observation Deck – (Levels 124 & 125 “At The Top” advance booking essential). The entrance is through the Dubai Mall basement level.
- Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo – you can view the world’s largest suspended tank from within the Mall for free or come in for plenty of interactive water life experiences.
- Kidzania Dubai – a real-to-life town where kids “work” to earn Kidzos to spend on fun activities.
- Play DXB (Formerly VR Park) – a virtual reality theme park.
- Dubai Ice Rink – indoor ice skating fun on a full-sized Olympic rink.
- Dubai Opera – offering a year-round program of incredible entertainment from traditional opera to the best of Westend theatre and internationally acclaimed acts.
- Evening fountain show of Burj Lake , plus LED light show on the Burj Khalifa.
- With the kids, don’t forget the giant Hamleys store, plus The Toy Store in the basement – plenty of FREE fun entertainment!
Dubai Mall is certainly not the only shopping mall with a lot going on. In fact, Malls are where most summer life circulates around in Dubai during the day.
You can also try a few more novel indoor ideas in Dubai, such as:
Easy to reach on the Metro (the stop is aptly named Mall of the Emirates), sits about 30 mins away. The Mall of the Emirates is fairly close for those staying at any of the Jumeirah Hotels and only about 10 minutes from the Dubai Marina/JBR area.
- Ski Dubai & penguin encounters – sub-zero temperatures in the peak of summer, yes please!!
- Magic Planet – extensive family entertainment complex including Yalla! Bowling , Highway66 mini bowling and Gravity Air Park – think trampolines!
- Catch the latest flix at the huge Vox Cinema complex
- Dreamscape – VR Experience rooms
Situated south of Dubai city, this great suburban mall is packed with entertainment and dining options. It’s not on the Metro, so you’d need a taxi/Uber . Why not try
- ifly indoor flying simulator gravity-defying indoor fun!
- Sky Trails and Climbing Wall – part of the Magic Planet kids entertainment centre.
- Massive 20-screen Vox Cinema offers every type of movie screening you can imagine!
A smaller community Mall that’s got a few key fun entertainment attractions for summer! You’ll find it on the Red Metro line (Rostamani Tower is 300m away, a 4 min walk or Financial Centre Metro is about 350m away 5 min walk)
- Adventure Zone by Adventure HQ – offering indoor climbing walls, obstacle courses and more
- Chillout Ice Lounge – enjoy a desert drink in sub-zero temperatures!
One of the city’s newest mega malls has loads of fun new indoor instalments, including:
- Storm Coaster – the world’s largest indoor rollercoaster.
- Adventure Park – climbing walls to rope courses keeping kids active indoors, designed for kids 4+.
- Play DXB – another instalment of the highly popular VR Park as found in Dubai Mall (but with fewer queues for attractions!)
These are the best ones for keeping cool inside, though you may still need to walk outside a little to get to them!
- The Dubai Frame – superb views as well as interactive displays around Dubai’s past and present in Zabeel Park.
- Etihad Museum – learn more about the country’s recent history and journey to unification.
- The Green Planet Dubai – an entirely indoor biodome experience that transports you to a tropical rainforest (warm but much cooler than outside!!) at City Walk.
- La Perle evening extravaganza by Dragone is one of the city’s most highly acclaimed stage shows with a permanent home in Al Habtoor City.
- IMG Worlds of Adventure is the only entirely indoor theme park in Dubai.
- Dubai Parks and Resorts is another favourite family offering, including Legoland Dubai and Motiongate , but as it’s partly outdoors, it may not suit everyone (NB Bollywood Park has now closed permanently). A new addition to the Riverland area kids will love is the indoor place space, Neon Galaxy . And in 2024 we should be welcoming the world’s first football theme park, Real Madrid World .
There’s a good detailed review here what you should expect at Dubai Parks and Resorts in the summer so you are fully prepared for just how hot it can be and what remains open.
- If time permits and you have access to a transfer, our favourite indoor theme park is actually Warner Bros World in Abu Dhabi – you can easily access Warner Bros on a day trip from Dubai .
There are a tonne more fun indoor activities, from rock climbing to escape rooms, that can all be enjoyed entirely indoors over the summer in Dubai – check out our complete Dubai indoor entertainment guide here.
The water parks are the main outdoor attractions that are still in full operation over the hottest summer months in Dubai.
Dubai Waterparks
- Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park (entry included if you stay at Atlantis the Palm).
- Wild Wadi Water Park (Entry included if you stay at one of the Jumeirah hotels – currently not open for public ticket sales).
- Legoland Water Park – best for your smaller kids, based out in Jebel Ali attached to the Dubai Parks & Resorts complex.
- Yas Waterworld (ok this one is actually on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi but it is definitely worth considering as a day trip, alongside the entirely indoors Warner Bros World with a free shuttle service from Dubai)
REMEMBER: Even if you hire a cabana, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade, it can still be excruciatingly hot outside even at a water park. Be mindful of hot surfaces (wear flip-flops or non-slip pool shoes everywhere and be VERY careful of touching surfaces).
Outdoor evening activities to try in Dubai in Summer:
As long as you are prepared for it to still be quite sweaty, even after dark, you could try these evening activities in Dubai once the sun goes down.
- Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park – previously a winter venue, this park stayed open over Eid evenings last year and looks like it may stick around for a much longer season to light up your balmy evenings.
- Walk around the Al Fahidi neighbourhood , taking in many of the city’s museums and galleries and along the creekfront at Al Seef before catching a traditional abra across the gold and spice souks in Deira.
- The Walk in JBR, a popular outdoor dining district alongside the beach, still has a vibrant nightlife, although outdoor dining is mostly removed in the peak of summer.
- Souk Madinat Jumeirah – a much more modern souk experience. From here, you get the spectacular views back to Burj Al Arab. Mostly indoor and airconditioned, lots of dining options and picturesque waterways.
- A traditional dhow boat around Dubai Fountain Lake – see the Dubai fountains up close in this spectacular evening sound and light show.

Should I do a Dubai desert safari in Summer?
Many desert safari companies do continue to run over the summer, albeit on a reduced program.
We think this depends on how you cope with the heat, but from many years of experience, anything from late May to early October starts to get really sticky outside.
If you are heat lovers you may still enjoy it, but with young kids, I would be extremely cautious of recommending a desert safari in the summer. An option might be to take an early morning desert safari instead to beat the worst heat of the day.
Our favourite attractions in Dubai that are NOT operational in summer (see links to find out when they will re-open, it;s variably around the end of October/early November) include:
- Dubai Miracle Garden
- Global Village Dubai
- Ripe outdoor markets
- Many day safari and beach sporting operators
Many restaurants and attractions do now remain open throughout summer, albeit with significantly reduced programs or only opening in the evenings. Outdoor brunches stop in the summer, and rooftop decks will only open in the evenings, if at all.
It’s always best to check opening hours from Ramadan (April onwards) all the way through summer for anything with an outdoor element.
Where to Stay in Dubai over the Summer
The good news is that the answer is almost anywhere. All Dubai hotels will be airconditioned, and it’s very uncommon to come across a hotel that does not chill their pool in summer.
If you stay in a hotel directly attached to one of the malls or souqs, you will have excellent access to leisure and dining facilities without having to put a foot outside. Why not try;
- Sheraton at Mall of the Emirates, or top-end hotel, even with a ski lodge suite, try the Kempinski
- Address Dubai Mall and Address Downtown – attached to Dubai Mall
- Armani Hotel Dubai in Burj Khalifa, attached to Dubai Mall
- Address Dubai Marina attached to Dubai Marina Mall
- Jumeirah Al Naseem attached to Souk Madinat Jumeirah
- InterContinental at Dubai Festival City – very close to DXB airport too
- Jumeirah Beach Hotel attached to Wild Wadi Water Park
- Atlantis the Palm attached to Aquaventure
- Lapita at Dubai Parks & Resorts and Legoland Water Park
See some of our favourite Dubai hotels that INCLUDE a waterpark or slides!
Many hotel resorts also include mini water parks, lazy rivers, and kids’ clubs within their grounds. The choices are almost endless, and the summer value can be fantastic. A few suggestions to try:
- Dukes t he Palm – lazy river & Duksey kids club (and stunning infinity pool )
- Le Meridien Mina Seyahi – kids pool & kids club, playground, extensive dining options
- Habtoor Grand Resort – slides, kids pool & infinity pool, indoor playground
For a truly unique experience during your Dubai stopover – and if the budget will stretch – why not stay in a hotel with a private pool?
If you are only in Dubai for a very short stopover, you may opt to simply stay in the airport over the hottest time of the year. We have a complete guide to things to do in DXB Airport here.
Summer travellers may also be able to take advantage of the My Emirates Pass, which provides discounts on scores of restaurants, retail stores and attractions, simply by showing you have an Emirates boarding pass (we await details of the 2023 program).
More frequently asked questions about summer in Dubai
It really depends on what you feel is “hot”. Generally speaking, it starts to get too hot for outdoor activity by the end of May. Many seasonal and outdoor events will start to close at the end of April/start of May. You will find little reprieve from the Dubai heat until the end of October.
Dubai can still be really pleasant and enjoyable to visit in the summer if you’re prepared to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors and set your expectations of what is possible to do in the summer heat. If you have an interest in visiting many of the city’s indoor attractions and are happy to leave most of your outdoor activities until after dark , you can still have a great vacation in Dubai in the summer.
This really depends on your tolerance to heat and what you want to do in Dubai. If you’re looking for a beach vacation full of days on the beach and playing in the water with the kids, you may be better off waiting for the weather to cool a little from October through April. If, however, your plans see you flying through Dubai in the hottest months, you can still absolutely fill an itinerary with more indoor activities and stay up later in the evening when the air cools (a little). Life just changes around a little in Dubai to cope with the heat.
Both July and August are extremely hot in Dubai, though the increase in humidity makes August feel like the hottest month.
We keep a temperature chart on our website at all times to help you keep an eye on current conditions – on a desktop computer, just look to the sidebar on your right; on mobile, scroll to the end of this page.

Summer 2023: 24 of the best things to do in Dubai
- Better Living
- 06 Feb, 2023
There is no doubt that the summers in Dubai can be hot. Like really hot! But that doesn’t mean summertime here is dull.
Whether you’re a resident of Dubai or just planning a holiday soon, summer is a great opportunity to explore Dubai. For one, venues are less crowded than during the rest of the year, and there are lots of fun places in and around Dubai!
With summer soon on the way, we asked everyone in the office what their favourite things to do in Dubai during summer are.
Top 24 things to do in Dubai this summer
1. deep dive dubai.
“With a depth of 60 meters or close to 200 feet, this is the world’s deepest pool verified by the Guinness World Records. Explore an abandoned sunken city, complete with streets, homes, and bicycles! If diving is not your thing, you can try their surface snorkelling experience.”
2. Dubai Frame, Zabeel Park
“You should take your family or friends to Dubai Frame if you haven’t done so already. The world’s largest frame is a spectacle you have to see to believe. As well as offering stunning views, it also offers an immersive time-travel experience that takes you through the UAE’s past, present, and future.”
3. Dubai Dolphinarium, Creek Park
“Get up close and personal with the dolphins at Dubai Dolphinarium. This fully air-conditioned indoor venue houses seals and dolphins and you can watch and interact with these majestic sea creatures during the show.”
4. The Green Planet, City Walk
“With over 3000 exotic flora and fauna, The Green Planet is one of the most popular animal attractions in the UAE. Once you step inside, you enter a green oasis that recreates a tropical rainforest which is a treat for nature lovers like me!”
5. Museum of the Future, Sheikh Zayed Road
“With its floating form, windows in Arabic calligraphy, and space-age finish, it’s nearly impossible to miss this new Dubai landmark located on SZR. There are plenty of things to see inside with seven floors dedicated to different exhibitions.”
6.The Farm Restaurant, Al Barari
“One of the nicest hidden places in Dubai is The Farm Restaurant in Al Barari. During the summer months, the outdoor glass tent is an ideal place to escape the heat and enjoy fresh food, surrounded by a pond and lush greenery.” – Ben Bargh, CRC Managing Director
7. The Coffee Museum, Bur Dubai
“It is located in the Al Fahidi district, also known as Bastakia, where you can visit the Dubai Museum and the Al Fahidi Fort, which is the oldest structure in Dubai. You can stop by the coffee museum if you’re in the area and enjoy a cup of coffee while learning about the history of coffee in the region.”
8. Brothaus Bakery, Business Bay
“It’s a great place with a cool vibe and excellent German food. You can have coffee, food, or drinks. They also offer German baking classes. So it’s a pleasant place to spend time indoors during the summer.” – Zubin Firozi, Octopus CEO
9. Stomping Grounds, Jumeirah
“On Friday afternoons, I usually escape with my girls to Stomping Grounds, a quaint coffee joint in Jumeirah 1. They have a wide range of coffee selections with a divine menu away from the drone of modern life.”
10. Kite N’ Surf, Jumeirah Beach
“I go kayaking at Kite N’ Surf in Jumeirah Beach in the summer. Weekend mornings during summer are ideal. It’s easy to hire the kayak if you have a Classpass membership or you can just pay AED 60 on the spot if you don’t. Kayaking helps you get your cardio done for the day while restoring balance. Plus, you’ll enjoy scenic views of the city and Burj Al Arab.” – Aliya Siraeva, Marketing Executive
11. Aquaventure Waterpark, Atlantis The Palm
“Enjoy a hot summer day submerged in water at the fun-packed Aquaventure Waterpark. With over 30 attractions to choose from, there is something for all members of the family to enjoy. There is a 2.3km lazy river for the less adventurous and leaps of faith for the thrill seeker. There are also plenty of swimming pools to relax in while the kids check out the attractions. Food can be quite pricey so it’s worth bringing along a cooler bag with a packed lunch.”
12. Wasit Wetland Centre, Sharjah
“The place I recommend is not in Dubai, it’s actually in Sharjah called Wasit Wetland in the Al Wasit area. It’s a scenic place with a big lake surrounded by green vegetation, and a lot of birds and animals. And it is very cheap. With some AED 20, you can roam the entire park in a buggy” – Praveen Nair, Property Management Team Leader
13. Emirates National Auto Museum, Abu Dhabi
It is located near Liwa Oasis, south of Abu Dhabi, with one of the largest collections of trucks and cars in the world. BBC’s Top Gear also featured it. It’s a great place to visit if you have kids and if you’re an automotive enthusiast.”
14. Hatta Dam, Hatta
“There is no hidden gem in Dubai that is as beautiful as Hatta Dam in my opinion, and I would be hard-pressed to find one. It is a natural water dam, located in Hatta, and it is a perfect place to relax and enjoy kayaking while enjoying the lovely scenery!”
15. Extreme Fun, Motor City
“Located in Motor City, the indoor soft play area is ideal for toddlers. An excellent place to spend time with your kids if you are trying to escape the heat.”
16. Air Maniax, Al Quoz
“Air Maniax is one of the most popular adventure parks in Dubai, located in Al Quoz. This indoor recreation hub has a huge inflatable soft playground and a cafe, where parents can relax and chill out while still keeping an eye on the kids.” – Robert Villalobos, Branch Director, Dubai Marina
17. The Lime Tree Café, Sheikh Zayed Road
“My first tip is to keep toddlers (and dads!) entertained around Jumeirah. Firstly, the LimeTree Cafe of SZR. It is roomy so you won’t feel trapped inside. The breakfasts are great and there is a little playroom for younger kids. I can happily spend an hour reading the paper over breakfast while my daughter entertains herself.”
19. Mercato Mall, Jumeirah
“My second tip is the giant slide at Mercato Mall. It is great fun for kids and dads. It tires out the most active kids going up and down it and most importantly it is free!” – Richard Waind, Group Managing Director
19. iFly, City Centre Mirdif
“For those who want to find out what it’s like to fly, iFly in City Centre Mirdif is the place to go. This indoor skydiving experience lets you experience the thrill of flying through a vertical wind tunnel.”
20. Shark Diving, Dubai Mall
“In Dubai Mall? Ditch your streetwear for a wetsuit and get up close and personal with some of the ocean’s most fascinating predators at Dubai Aquarium. This is perfect for adrenaline junkies and diving enthusiasts; not for the faint of heart.”
21. Sega Republic, Dubai Mall
If you find yourself strolling around Dubai Mall, make sure to stop by Sega Republic, one of the largest indoor theme parks in the Middle East. Sega Republic offers exhilarating rides, interactive activities, and virtual arcade games for all ages.”
22. Ski Dubai, Mall of the Emirates
“Who says you can’t enjoy snow in Dubai during the scorching summer months? There are dozens of ways for you and your family to enjoy this 3,300-square-meter winter wonderland. You can take skiing lessons at the ski slope or say hello to the cute penguins at the snow park for example.”
23. Dubai Museum, Al Fahidi
A visit to Dubai Museum will take you back in time. This museum, located in Al Fahidi Fort, was built in 1787 and is the oldest building in Dubai and has even served as a prison in the past. There are many exhibits that illustrate life in Dubai before the discovery of oil.”
24. Water taxis, Deira Old Souq
“Water Taxis, or abras, are traditional wooden boats found mostly on Dubai Creek. It’s a great way to see Old Dubai and the beautiful creek. They are air-conditioned and beautiful to look at. Perhaps, the best part is that you can call the toll-free number, 8009090, and an operator will pick you up at the nearest station.”
Whatever your plans for summer 2023, we hope you have an amazing time exploring Dubai!

Travelers visiting 'cooler' places to escape summer heat
Sweden, denmark, the netherlands see an uptick in demand.
Cooler-climate countries see spike in demand for summer travel
Virtuoso Vice President of Global Public Relations Misty Belles discusses 2024 summer travel trends, the demographic shift to the cruise industry and Global Travel Adviser Day.
As the summer travel season heats up, one travel expert revealed the destinations vacationers are flocking to.
"Well, we're seeing a lot of interest in Europe as we always do," Virtuoso's Misty Belles said on Wednesday's " Mornings with Maria ." However, "this time we're seeing them go to Northern Europe."
The expert pointed out that travelers are opting for cooler-climate nations.
"Don't get me wrong, people still love Western Europe, and they're still going to Paris for the Olympics , " she said. "We're seeing much more demand for places like Scandinavia, which is up 77% over last summer,"
TOP SUMMER TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR 2024: THESE INTERNATIONAL SPOTS WERE THE MOST SEARCHED
Sweden also saw a 145% increase in demand compared to last summer, as well as Denmark and the Netherlands, she said.
"We're seeing people wanting to escape the heat waves that they experienced last summer."
And despite inflation, demand is "extremely strong," as prices remain relatively unchanged.
Virtuoso conducted a survey showing the increase in demand for summer travel, showing strong demand for Scandinavia and the Netherlands. (Fox News / Fox News)
"We aren't seeing the [travel] rates spiking as much during this summer, with the exception of the Paris Olympics, because the rates were so expensive last year. So they're really about on par with where they were last summer."
Belles admitted, however, that "overall, everything else is more expensive" but travelers "are not letting go of their luxury experiences."
The travel expert also discussed the demographic shift in cruising.
CRUISE LINES SAILING INTO 2024 SEEING STRONG DEMAND, AAA SAYS
"We're seeing that cruising is no longer sort of that baby boomer, mature retiree type clientele," she explained.
In 2023, cruises were projected to collectively see passenger volumes of 31.5 million globally, according to a report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association that counts Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and other lines among its members. The association also predicted ocean-going cruises will see 36 million passengers in 2024.
Gen Z can gain ‘a lot’ from traveling and exploring different cultures: Abby Hornacek
Fox Nation host Abby Hornacek joins ‘Varney & Co.’ to weigh in on a Business Insider poll that revealed Gen Z values traveling over advancing their education.
Belle said that the industry and its perception have changed, with ships remaining in port longer allowing passengers to be more adventurous.
"The beautiful thing about cruising is that there is a line or an itinerary for any type of traveler at this point."

Make it Rain: 9 Incredible Spots in the U.S. to Catch the Summer’s Best Meteor Showers
Meteor showers can be seen all over the world, but these locations will maximize the number of meteors you see.
Everything is meditatively still, except the wind and the chirp of crickets as a pinprick of light traveling more than 30,000 miles per hour tears through the quiet. Spotting a meteor on any given night can be a thrill, but there’s a magical quality to sitting under the stars at the peak of a meteor shower as shooting stars appear one after another for hours on end.
There’s something akin to the feeling of a dopamine rush in the tension of watching these meteor showers. You stare deep into time, waiting for comet debris to crash into Earth’s atmosphere and light up the sky overhead. Unlike the Northern Lights , you don’t necessarily have to travel far to see meteor showers, and they can often be spotted across the U.S. You simply need dark skies and good weather to witness the peak of a meteor shower.
While there’s not a specific “meteor shower season” (some of the best annual displays take place in the winter, including the occasionally bombastic Geminids), the summer and fall are great times to see showers because the weather makes it tolerable to sit outside for hours.
There are plenty of warm-weather displays left to catch this year. While the Eta Aquariids peak on May 4 into the morning of May 5 (most displays are best seen after midnight on the night of their peak), with the potential to showcase 10 to 30 meteors per hour, the shower is typically visible until around May 28. There’s a dry spell before the Alpha Capricornids peak the night of July 30. This shower doesn’t produce many meteors, but among its scattered streaks, viewers will find bright fireballs. Finally, the last display of the summer is the best of the year, as the Perseids will peak the night of August 12. The moon will set just before midnight, providing perfect conditions until the dawn hours of August 13. The Perseids can unfurl up to 100 meteors per hour during this time.
While you can see meteor showers under dark skies across the U.S., you can also make an event of it by heading to any of these nine spots that are a perfect setting for stargazing. Wherever you go, get out during this year’s meteor showers to unplug, connect with nature, and find something inspiring.
Where to See Meteor Showers in the U.S.
Northern minnesota, salt lake city, utah, cherry springs state park in pennsylvania, anza-borrego desert state park in california, dripping springs, texas, michigan’s upper peninsula, beverly shores, indiana, mammoth cave national park in kentucky, big cypress national preserve in florida.
Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness are both certified International Dark Sky Parks by Dark Sky International . That certification means a park has worked to protect its sky from light pollution, and because of those ongoing efforts, its pristine skies are dark enough to see the Milky Way and other deep-space objects. In northern Minnesota, however, it’s not just these parks that offer a grand view. Other areas around the Superior National Forest and the north shore of Lake Superior may not be certified parks, but are remote enough to escape most light pollution. Additionally, the area is far enough north that there’s a chance of spotting the northern lights, which are likely to appear more frequently in 2024 .
With low population density, gorgeous natural spaces and significant swaths of protected land, southern Utah is a stargazing paradise. (It’s also home to Under Canvas’ Lake Powell – Grand Staircase camping area , the first-ever Dark Sky Lodging .) However, don’t sleep on the area around Salt Lake City in the north. While light pollution overwhelms most meteors around the city, you don’t have to go far to find a sanctuary. Antelope Island State Park, a certified Dark Sky park, is less than an hour from downtown, offering a view into the cosmos, particularly along its western edge, away from the city and looking out across the Great Salt Lake. Cottonwood Canyon is less than an hour from the city and also serves majestic night sky views. The nearby Solitude Mountain Resort is an accessible hub east of the city and even hosts stargazing programs on-site.
The West’s abundant open spaces are perfect for stargazing. It’s harder to find dark skies in the more heavily populated East. Cherry Springs State Park is an exception, and the park takes stargazing seriously. Astronomy clubs from around the region flock to its Astronomy Field, which has a 360-degree view of the night sky. Situated in the Susquehannock State Forest, Cherry Springs even hosts annual star parties that attract astronomers and space enthusiasts from near and far. While it’s a good drive from Pennsylvania’s biggest cities, more than a few cozy cabins are available through services like Airbnb .
The West is rife with alluring stargazing perches. It’s reasonable to expect that means Idaho, Utah, northern Arizona, western Colorado or Montana, but not southern California. However, just under two hours from San Diego sits the Dark Sky-certified Anza-Borrego State Park. By land area, it’s the second largest state park in the country, about two and a half hours from Los Angeles, traffic gods willing. Part of the Colorado Desert, its stargazing prowess is a beneficiary of its proximity to the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California, which helps keep the skies clear.
Light pollution, which is actually just pollution, is almost impossible to escape. That places like Antelope Island or Cherry Springs exist is impressive because it’s not mere happenstance that dark skies sit overhead. It has taken the persistent dedication of environmentalists to protect the night sky in those locations. Dripping Springs is a special case that demonstrates how monumental the effort can be. Sitting between Austin and San Antonio, residents of Dripping Springs organized to protect the community from encroaching light pollution. Like other nearby International Dark Sky Communities such as Blanco, 25 miles to the west, Dripping Springs is a small, dark haven amidst a sea of light pollution. There are plenty of places to stay in those metro areas, but Getaway’s secluded and modern tiny cabin campground is less than 30 minutes from both Dripping Springs and Blanco.
The Upper Peninsula’s low population density and lengthy shoreline mean there are dozens of great places for stargazing. One of those is the passionately preserved Beaver Island, which offers some of the darkest skies available in the lower 48. Like northern Minnesota, the UP is far enough north that stargazers not only find a front-row seat to meteor showers, but the aurora can appear from time to time. The UP also houses events like the annual Upper Peninsula Dark Sky Festival at Keweenaw Dark Sky Park and Keweenaw Mountain Lodge . Additionally, the lodge hosts stargazing and northern lights photography events for guests throughout the year.
Beverly Shores is only about an hour from Chicago, so it’s awe-inspiring that it has managed to secure Dark Sky status. Residents have dubbed it “The Island” because it’s bordered by Lake Michigan to the north and Indiana Dunes National Park to the east, south and west. It should be bookmarked by millions because it’s four hours or less from Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Madison, Detroit and Toledo. While it’s a day trip from some of those places, there are also charming Airbnb cabins in the city and surrounding area.
Mammoth Cave doesn’t just have access to the largest cave system in the world (not to mention excellent biking paths and gorgeous canoeing along the Green River). The national park is also Dark Sky-certified. From retrofitting outdoor lighting to garnering community support and building a plan for the future, Mammoth Cave went to a lot of work to gain the certification it received in 2021. It paid off. Visitors and residents can now take advantage of its immaculate dark skies as well as its ranger-led stargazing programs .
Big Cypress, which borders the Everglades to the south, managed to get DSI status back in 2016 despite being less than an hour and a half from Miami. It has been impacted by its close proximity to Miami and Naples, but continues to preserve its dark skies for stargazers and, more importantly, its impressively diverse ecosystem. Visitors will frequently find observation events hosted by the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center.

Last-minute guide to Global Village before it closes for summer
Popular dubai venue pulling out all the stops for its last hurrah this week.
Global Village closes on May 5. Chris Whiteoak / The National
Last week Global Village announced it was extending the current season to May 5 – much to the delight of tourists and residents looking to take last-minute trips to the venue before it shuts for summer.
The long-established family attraction was originally due to close on April 28. In the weeks running up to this date, heavy rains struck the UAE, forcing Global Village to cancel some of its major shows, including what would have been its final concert featuring Swedish pop star Zara Larsson .
However, the institute is promising a fun, action-packed week for everyone who makes it down before it closes.
Social media talks and DJ sets
While Larsson's performance has been completely shelved, the venue has announced new events featuring other artists in the coming days. First on the schedule is a talk and meet-and-greet with some of today's biggest Arab social media personalities – Ghaith Marwan, Sara Alwa, Islam Afro and Raghda. The talk will take place on May 1.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by رغدة تالين كيومجيان ® (@raghda.k)
Ending the season with an electrifying set will be DJ Dany Neville, who'll take to the main stage on May 5.
Headline events aside, the theme park still has a daily programme of cultural shows within individual country pavilions, from India to Lebanon. America's Got Talent contestants Urban Crew, who are frequent Global Village performers, are also in the line-up, as well as comedic act Clowns to the Rescue.
Visit season debuts and all-time classics
Global Village is known to be an all-encompassing entertainment venue for the family, with many attractions and experiences designed for all ages.
The carnaval, for example, has more than 195 rides and games to check out. Horror lovers can enter House of Fear while those who fancy themselves as great marksmen can drop by the shooting zone. Children can spend some time at Diggers Lab, while family and friends are welcome to try the mini golf attraction.
Mini World, meanwhile, is the perfect spot for Instagram-worthy snaps. Debuting this season, it houses 25 miniature global landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower in Paris to the Colosseum in Rome. It also features a range of thrill-inducing activities in the Neon Galaxy Challenge Zone, such as wall climbing zones and obstacle courses.
Another main feature at the venue this season is the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! “Odditorium” which is home to wacky exhibitions, optical illusions and other interactive zones. There's a mirror maze, a 4D moving theatre and an immersive virtual reality adventure for the little ones. Since its Global Village debut in 2019, the space has added new exhibits year by year, keeping the experience fresh for visitors.
Head to the markets for worldwide cuisine and trinkets
Global Village attracts different kinds of visitors. There are those looking for family-friendly fun and adventure, while others sign up for the food and the proverbial retail therapy.
Firstly, the Dubai venue is a veritable rabbit hole of endless food outlets. This season, nearly 300 cafes, stalls and restaurants are on-site – a mixed bag of old and new vendors whipping up sweet and savoury dishes and desserts.
The Floating Market and Railway Market are abundant with Asian delights, from Korean street food Tteokbokki to Thai dessert mango sticky rice. There are Middle Eastern favourites, American classics and other cuisine staples for the intrepid foodies who visit Global Village with dining as the main motivation. If you want some help kick-starting the last-minute food trip to the venue, here's our guide .
Retail is also another major attraction with 3,500 outlets peppered across the vast site, selling everything from home decor to fashion pieces and other memorabilia. The 27 pavilions are also a treasure trove of such items, including carpets from the Morocco pavilion to a range of spices at the India pavilion.
