Iraq militant group says it is resuming attacks on US forces as base in Syria is targeted
First attack on US forces since early February comes day after Iraq’s prime minister returns from US visit
An Iraqi militant group has said it will resume attacks on US forces in the country, as it appeared to claim responsibility for a strike on an American military base in north-eastern Syria which saw at least five rockets launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar.
Sunday’s strike against US forces is the first since early February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped their attacks against US troops.
It comes one day after Iraq’s prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, returned from a visit to the United States and met with Joe Biden at the White House.
Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah said Iraqi armed groups had decided to resume attacks on the US presence in the country after seeing little progress on talks to achieve the exit of American troops during al-Sudani’s visit to Washington.
“What happened a short while ago is the beginning,” the group said.
Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor, said several rockets had been fired “from Iraqi territory at the Kharab al-Jir base” in north-east Syria, where US forces are stationed.
A statement from the Iraqi security forces accused “outlaw elements of having targeted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory”, at about 9.50pm local time.
Iraqi forces responded to the attack by launching a major search operation in northern Nineveh province which found the vehicle used in the attack, they said in a statement.
The security forces burned the vehicle involved, the statement added.
After a series of rocket attacks and drone strikes by pro-Iran armed factions against US soldiers deployed in the Middle East in the early part of the year, there had been several weeks of calm.
In January, a drone attack killed three US soldiers in the Jordanian desert on the Syrian border. In response, the US military struck dozens of targets in Syria and Iraq , aiming for pro-Iran forces, and drawing criticism from the governments of both countries.
The United States has about 2,500 soldiers stationed in Iraq and nearly 900 across the border in Syria as part of an international coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The leaders of Iran and Pakistan agreed to strengthen economic and security cooperation in a meeting on Monday that sought to smooth over a diplomatic rift.
Ties were strained between the neighbors in January when each carried out strikes in the other’s territory , targeting militants accused of attacking security forces.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials on his three-day visit. Authorities deployed hundreds of additional police and paramilitary forces for security.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent months, mostly blamed on Pakistani Taliban and insurgents targeting security forces in Pakistan and neighboring Iran.
According to a statement, the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral issues and vowed to cooperate to fight terrorism. They reiterated their condemnations of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
Sharif praised Iran’s “strong stand on the issue of Palestine” and said “Pakistan is also with the Palestinians.”
Raisi said the killings by Israel in Gaza were being committed with the support of the United States and other Western countries. He criticized international organizations, including the United Nations, saying, “They say they support human rights, but they proved that they are inefficient.”
The visit comes after Iran’s unprecedented direct strikes on Israel and an apparent Israeli response. Pakistan is among the countries that have no diplomatic relations with Israel because of the issue of Palestinian statehood.
Raisi also vowed to boost what he called “unacceptably” meager bilateral trade with Pakistan and called for setting up more border markets. Pakistan and Iran set up the first such border market in southwestern Pakistan’s Baluchistan province last year, promising five more under a 2012 agreement.
The two leaders signed eight cooperation agreements, according to Sharif’s office.
Authorities said the two sides also discussed a multi-billion gas pipeline project, on hold since 2014. The project — opposed by Washington as a violation of sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program — launched in 2013 to supply Iranian natural gas to energy-starved Pakistan.
Iran says it had already completed the pipeline on its side of the border after investing $2 billion. Pakistan was supposed to finish construction on its territory by the end of 2014 but work stalled, leading to tensions between the nations.
The Iranian president later met with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari, who helped launch the pipeline project after traveling to Iran in 2013.
On Monday night, Pakistan’s powerful army chief Gen. Asim Munir met with the Iranian president, the military said in a statement. It said their discussion focused on “matters of mutual interest, notably regional peace, stability and border security.”
The statement said Munir described the Pakistan-Iran border as “the border of peace and friendship” but emphasized the need for improved coordination there “to prevent terrorists from jeopardizing the longstanding brotherly relations.”
It quoted Raisi as saying that by fostering cooperation between the militaries, Iran and Pakistan “can attain peace and stability for both nations and the region.”
Raisi also met with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The two discussed regional and global developments and “affirmed commitment to peace and constructive dialogue for resolving regional challenges.”
Raisi is accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation. He plans to visit Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest city, and Lahore, where he will meet with the country’s recently elected first female chief minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
This version corrects the first name of the Pakistani president to Asif.

Why The Cardinals Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Cardinals are 26th in runs scored this year while sitting 26th in batting average, 23rd in on-base percentage, and 28th in slugging. Willson Contreras has led the way on offense. He is hitting .294 on the year with seven doubles and three home runs. This has led to eight RBIs on the year and 11 runs scored. Leading the team in RBIs this year are Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan. Arenado is hitting .295 on the year with a .343 on-base percentage. He has six doubles and a home run, leading to his 12 RBIs and eight runs scored. Donovan is hitting just .217 on the year but does have a .321 on-base percentage. He has four doubles, a triple, and two home runs. This has led to his 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
Over the last week, it has been Lars Nootbaar driving in the runs. HE is hitting just .217 in the last week, but he has two doubles and four RBIs in those six games. He has also scored one in that time. Meanwhile, Nolan Gorman has added a home run and three RBIs in the last week.
Cardinals pitching is 20th in team ERA while sitting 22nd in WHIP and 26th in opponent batting average. It will be Miles Mikolas on the mound for the Cardinals in this one. He is 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. He has given up five runs over 4.2 innings in each of his last two starts, losing both of them. Current members of the Mets have a lifetime .234 batting average on Mikolas with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win
The Mets are 12th in the majors in runs scored, while sitting 12th in batting average, ninth in on-base percentage, and 15th in slugging percentage. Pete Alonso has led the way for the Mets. He is hitting .263 this year with a .340 on-base percentage. Further, he has seven home runs and 12 RBIs, plus has scored 19 times. While he leads the team in home runs and runs scored, he is tied for this in RBIS. the leader in RBIs is Brandon Nimmo. Nimmo is hitting just .186 on the year but with three doubles, a triple, and two home runs. He has 15 RBIs on the year and 13 runs scored.
Sitting second in RBIs this year is Tyrone Taylor. He has 13 RBIs this year while hitting .327 on the season. Taylor had three doubles and two home runs this year while scoring five times. Scoring a lot is something Starling Marte has done. He has scored 16 times on the season. He is hitting .290 with a .330 on-base percentage. Further, Marte has four doubles and four home runs, for 12 RBIs on the year.
The Mets are ninth in team ERA while sitting 24th in WHIP and eighth in opponent batting average. Jose Butto is expected to go for the Mets. He is 0-0 on the year with a 1.65 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Button has made three starts, giving up three runs in 16.1 innings of work. Last time out, he gave up two runs in 4.1 innings of work. No current member of the Cardinals has a career at-bat against Button.
Final Cardinals-Mets Prediction & Pick
Both teams had hopes of a solid season coming in, and both have struggled so far. While neither team is out of playoff contention, or in a big hole, winning is something that needs to start happening. The Mets offense has been much better to this point in the year. Further, they have had some solid work out of the bullpen, which will be needed with Jose Butto on the mound. The Cardinals have Mile Mikolas on the mound, who has been struggling all year. Take the Mets in this one.
