Local Living Italy—Sorrento

This tour is a great experience in regards to staying on a working farm. The accommodation, meals and staff at the farm were amazing. Luigi is so fun, helpful and informative. The limoncello and pizza making were excellent. We were lucky enough to be part of a wonderful group of tours it’s who really had fun together. The sailing around Capri is one of the best experiences we have ever had. Our tour guide was simply one of us, laughing, travelling and with us on nearly all excursion. It’s not easy to get into Sorrento so be prepared for that. The blue grotto option is almost impossible in high season so rule that out too. Enjoy the farm stay, the food, the people and the experience!

Amalfi Coast Experience Tour

Amalfi Coast Experience

Such an amazing experience. I did the Amalfi Coast tour and the whole trip was wonderful. I had Meaghan as a guide and she was incredible, not only extremely knowledgeable about all the sights and locations, but also the friendliest, nicest, person ever. It was my first time travelling overseas and I was pretty nervous as I was doing it by myself but being with Meaghan and the rest of my group honestly felt like being away with friends. I couldn’t recommend this enough.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Great trip walking the Amalfi coat! Our guide was Severio who was great fun and told us lots of facts about Amalfi along the way on our walks! The walks were challenging but a great way to see the Amalfi coast and to avoid the touristy parts. We also had free time to spend in the popular towns of Positano and Amalfi and the option to visit Capri! :) The food at the hotel was also great so don’t have anything to fault!

Local Living Italy—Amalfi Coast

Must be ready for some serious stair work. 135 just to start the day getting off the property. This is not for rookie hikers, but at the end of each day of trekking, we all felt pretty proud of our accomplishment. Tour must add/include transport back to Naples.

Walking with the Gods Tour

Walking with the Gods

Beautiful landscapes, pleasant sailing, nice team, excellent skipper. Two points must be mentioned : 1) The « walking with the gods » itinerary is splendid may be physically difficult for people over 70 and overweight (which is my case). Mountain shoes and walking poles are recommended. 2) Unfortunately counter-wind forced the skipper to use the engine most of the time.

Paths of the Amalfi Coast Tour

  • Self Guided Walking Holidays

Paths of the Amalfi Coast

The location on the Amalfi Coast is fabulous, with challenging but rewarding walks, and it was great to have a single base for the whole week. I was doing self-guided as a solo. There was no visual map, only written instructions, which at times were difficult to follow. I received cursory attention from hotel staff including the head waiter who was apparently my key contact: one of the other waiters was more thoughtful. When I did ask about departing bus timetables which weren’t clear, staff were very off hand - I had to persist to find out relevant information. The room was great - I had a jacuzzi bath. Unfortunately apart from the first and last nights, meals were far below what the information indicated, and even more basic than what I’d cook at home, and I’m not a fancy cook: for example, a bowl of cos lettuce for 4 of 7 nights with a few julienned carrots on one night and no dressing does not rate as a salad. Because I was self guided and solo I was consistently seated alone for dinner. The wifi in the bedroom was hopeless - repeatedly needing to sign in within minutes - but great in the dining area. I made the most of the opportunity and location, but overall, and in comparison to some of my other experiences throughout Europe, not value for money and I’d be reluctant to recommend to others.

Hotel room was large and comfortable = 5* Hotel location was difficult : NO buses, NO subway close by. We had to walk a LOT , even to reach meeting points for daily tours !! Excellent LUNCH and wine testing (5*) We did the VESUVIO hike, all the way to the TOP ! Carla was very kind and helpful on our tour
The accommodation was a bit too small but wasn’t as big a deal as we were out for most of the day. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great way to make new friends!
Excellent itinerary and captain RAF made the experience incredible. Fantastic recommendations at every location. Safety oriented on boat yet a confident sailor so we were able to sail in great wind and have an amazing experience. Highly recommend

Pompeii with Panoramic Winery Lunch on Vesuvius: Day Trip from Rome

What to know about pompeii / amalfi from our local guides.

What is the history of Pompeii?

In its heyday, Pompeii was an upscale coastal city popular as a vacation destination among wealthy Romans. This, combined with its status as a thriving center of trade and industry on the Mediterranean, made it a vibrant and bustling city that was home to around 12,000 residents.

Today, however, Pompeii is remembered as the site of ancient history’s greatest documented natural disaster. The devastating eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed Pompeii and the surrounding towns and villages. An estimated 16,000 people died as a result—2,000 of whom perished in the city of Pompeii—and tens of thousands of residents of the region were displaced.

The disaster left Pompeii buried under 20 feet of volcanic ash for hundreds of years until the first excavation efforts began in the 18th century. The quick burial of the city has provided modern archaeologists with a unique snapshot of Roman life. Pompeii’s well-preserved ruins have revealed intricate details about the architecture, culture, and lifestyle of the inhabitants during that time, making it a fascinating visit and a must-do on any Italy itinerary.

To fully make the most of your time in Pompeii, book a guided tour with an archaeologist . The ruins can be difficult to decipher on your own, and the facts and stories you’ll hear from an expert who has dedicated their life to studying the site will make your experience that much more meaningful.

Is it possible to take a Pompeii day trip from Rome?

Short on time in Italy? You’re in luck—taking a day trip to Pompeii from Rome is incredibly doable. That said, travel logistics in southern Italy can be tricky to figure out for the uninitiated, which is why we recommend booking an organized tour that will handle all the details for you.

Our Pompeii Tour from Rome with Amalfi Coast Driv e combines an insightful visit to Pompeii with a drive along the jaw-dropping Amalfi Coast and a stop in picturesque Positano. This experience offers the most complete view of this unmissable corner of Italy without the hassle of getting there on your own.

Prefer a more food-focused experience? Our Pompeii with Panoramic Winery Lunch on Vesuvius: Day Trip from Rome includes a visit to a family-run winery on the slopes of the infamous volcano following your guided visit of Pompeii. Stroll through the vines and sit down to a homemade farm-to-table Italian lunch, complete with wine pairings and a guided tasting.

What are the most important Pompeii ruins?

While you could easily spend days at Pompeii and still not see it all, these sites provide a unique insight into the daily life, architecture, and art of the ancient Roman world.

  • Temple of Apollo : One of the oldest and most important religious structures in Pompeii, dating back to the second century BC.
  • House of the Vettii : A well-preserved Roman villa famous for its intricate frescoes. This stunning home made headlines in 2022 when it was re-opened to the public following decades of restoration work, and is a firm favorite on our Complete Pompeii Experience .
  • Lupanar : The most famous brothel in Pompeii, known for its erotic paintings, is one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman brothel.
  • House of the Tragic Poet : Known for the iconic "Beware of Dog" mosaic and other beautiful artworks.
  • Forum of Pompeii : The political, commercial, and social hub of the city.
  • House of the Faun : The largest house in Pompeii, home to the "Dancing Faun" statue and the Alexander Mosaic.
  • Villa of the Mysteries : Famous for its well-preserved wall frescoes depicting the initiation rites (or "mysteries") of the Dionysian cult.
  • Stabian Baths : The oldest and one of the most complete bath complexes in Pompeii.

How long should I spend in Pompeii?

You’ll need at least half a day to ensure you see the city’s highlights, which will be plenty of time if you’re based in southern Italy. If you’re visiting Pompeii from Rome , plan for a full-day outing.

Pompeii is a vast archaeological site with a lot to see and it can be quite tiring to explore, especially in the hot sun. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sunscreen.

When is the best time to visit Pompeii?

In terms of weather, the spring and fall months offer pleasant temperatures that are warm but not excessively hot. The fall season has the added benefit of fewer tourist crowds.

While summer can be hot and crowded, this can be the perfect time to visit Pompeii if you’re looking to combine your experience with the nearby Amalfi Coast and its breathtaking beaches. Small businesses in many towns such as Positano close during the low season, but in the summertime, you’ll have plenty of options for shopping and dining.

Winter sees fewer crowds in Pompeii, allowing you to explore the ruins in relative peace. The quieter atmosphere allows for a more immersive experience that lets you feel the history and mystery of the ancient city.

How do I get to Pompeii?

If you’re already in southern Italy, reaching Pompeii by train is easy and effective. The Circumvesuviana train runs to Pompeii from both Naples (Porta Nolana and Garibaldi stations) and Sorrento. Trains depart hourly (occasionally more frequently during peak times) and take 30 minutes from Sorrento or 35–40 minutes from Naples. Ticket prices vary depending on your starting point, but will set you back less than €3 to get to Pompeii. Tickets must be purchased in-person at the station and cannot be booked online. Get off the train at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station.

You can also reach Pompeii by train from Rome. The high-speed Frecciarossa train will get you from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. From there, you can easily transfer to the Circumvesuviana train at nearby Garibaldi station in Naples and make your way to Pompeii as described above. However, to take the hassle out of your Italy vacation, consider booking a guided day trip from Rome to Pompeii complete with private round-trip transportation.

15 Best Pompeii Tours

Pompeii is a unique historic site in that in an ironic twist of fate, the catastrophe that decimated the citizens of the unsuspecting town is also responsible for the near-perfect preservation of many things that would have otherwise been destroyed in all other such natural disasters.

You’ll see art, furniture, and other everyday items the citizens used – in addition to the macabre plaster forms that are accurate representations of the citizens as captured in their last living moments.

Other beautiful coastal towns are nearby and easy to get to, including wineries, ancient villas, grottos, and breathtaking seaside resorts.

1. Pompeii Private Day Trip with Local Guide

Pompeii

This private tour of the amazing and cursed town of Pompeii is a great way to get your Mediterranean coast vacation started.

Your licensed guide will give the tour in either English or Italian; following his lead, you’ll visit the city’s ruins that have been astonishingly well preserved.

The town is full of narrow streets brimming with the histories of the families who called this prosperous town home before that fateful day nearly 2,000 years ago.

The tour includes stops at a theatre, a brothel, and other homes and businesses, as well as the eerily accurate plaster casts of the inhabitant’s last minutes.

2. Guided Walking Tour of Pompeii

Pompeii Tour

This 2 ½-hour guided tour is available in English, French, German and Spanish, and will allow you to skip right through the line and get priority entrance.

Pompeii is one of Italy’s most visited and iconic sites – it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll spend the afternoon discovering the history of this amazing city that was literally frozen in one historically unique moment in time and covered with layers of ash that in some areas exceeded 20 feet deep.

Much of the buried city wasn’t excavated until nearly 1,500 years later, making those undisturbed time capsules shocking and amazing in their completeness and preservation.

3. Pompeii Small Group Tour with an Archaeologist

Pompeii Ruins

If you’re an amateur historian or just want to know all there is to know about what makes Pompeii such a once-in-a-lifetime vacation opportunity, this two-hour guided tour is a great choice.

Your guide will be a knowledgeable and enthusiastic archaeologist who’s up to date on all the historical facts and personal anecdotes that make the town’s story so fascinating and macabre.

The maximum group size is just 15 guests, which means you’ll get that intimate feeling and attention to detail that’s so often lost with large groups.

The tour includes the Marina Gate, baths, a bakery, the basilica, and the plaster death masks.

4. Pompeii Wine Tasting with Lunch

Pompei Tasting Tour

After so much time spent among the amazing city’s long dead, it might be a good idea to switch gears and indulge yourself in a little gastronomical treat at one of the area’s most recognized vineyards.

This two-hour guided tour is available in four languages and accessible to those in wheelchairs.

You’ll see the winemaking process from beginning to end as you stroll through the vineyards, production facility, and the wine cellars where the wine is aged to perfection.

An array of food and wine samples will wet your whistle, and though door-to-door transportation isn’t included, all else is.

5. Full-Day Sightseeing Tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum from Naples

Herculaneum

If you happen to be staying in Naples but are longing to explore Pompeii and Herculaneum, this full-day tour should be on your itinerary.

You’ll see the ruins of Pompeii in the morning with a guide, and after lunch, you’ll be free to discover Herculaneum at your own pace.

Door-to-door transportation from Naples is included. In addition to the archaeological sites, you’ll look into some of the local shops and pick up a few mementos of your trip.

This tour is nearly all-inclusive; though the entrance fees and lunch are included, you’ll need to pay for your own drinks.

6. Full-Day Tour of Naples and Pompeii from Rome

Naples, Italy

In case you were wondering, it’s possible to visit Pompeii and Naples in a day-trip from Rome.

At 14 hours, it’ll definitely be a tiring day, but transportation is included and it’ll be well worth it when you look back on the amazing amount of history and sights that you were able to cram into only one day.

Due to its length and the significant amount of walking that’s required, this tour isn’t a great fit for very young children, the elderly, or those in less than tip-top physical shape.

It’s recommended that you bring a good hat, sunglasses and a comfortable pair of shoes.

7. Private Villa Cimbrone and Pompeii Tour from Rome

Villa Cimbrone

Villa Cimbrone is a large historic estate situated on a rocky bluff over the majestic Amalfi Coast.

The grounds include acres of open space that is full of statues, gardens, and fountains.

In the gardens, you’ll find interesting and risqué representations of Biblical themes like the Seven Deadly Sins, as well as mythological stories and historically important events.

After lunch, you’ll head to Pompeii and check out the town’s amazing sites as your guide gives you an intimate insight into the lives of the inhabitants before their normal lives were cut short in 79 AD.

Transportation and entrance fees are included but food and drink are not, so bring a few Euros.

8. Boat Tour from Sorrento to Pompeii and Capri

Capri Island

If your base of operations for your Italian vacation is Sorrento but you’d still like to see Pompeii and Capri, this tour is for you.

After meeting your guide, you’ll head to the Port of Piano di Sorrento, then go via boat to the Port of Castellammare di Stabia.

From the boat, you’ll see some of the most amazing views of the coastal towns surrounded by hills and cliffs shimmering against the bright blue water.

Your guide will lead you on a tour through Pompeii’s narrow streets and must-see historical sites, after which you’ll head by boat to the island of Capri and take in its many famous grottos.

9. Naples and Pompeii Train Trip from Rome

Pompeii

If you’re young, adventurous and up for an amazing tour of southern Italy by train, this Rome based tour of Naples and Pompeii is a great choice.

It’s only open to those between18 and 39-years-old, which should keep the tour’s pace quick and lively.

Your local guide will share lots of amazing and historical facts about the town of Pompeii and its people, whose lives were prematurely snuffed out on the day of the eruption in 79 AD.

You’ll also have a few hours of free time before traveling to Naples, one of the Italian coast’s most scenic cities that’s also known for its delicious food – especially pizza.

10. Pompeii, Sorrento and Positano Group Tour

Sorrento, Italy

Whether you’re staying in Naples, Salerno or Amalfi, you’ll be able to join this tour that will include Pompeii, Sorrento, and Positano.

The tour is available in three languages and includes pick-up from the ports of Naples, Salerno, and Amalfi.

Though Pompeii is the tour’s focal point, you’ll also get a chance to enjoy the amazing town of Sorrento, which is a mecca for lovers of Italian cuisine.

Last but not least, you’ll visit the scenic town of Positano that rests atop a rocky bluff overlooking the sea.

Keep in mind that this tour doesn’t include entrance fees, food or drink.

11. 3-Day Tour from Rome to Naples, Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast

For those looking for a multi-day, full-immersion tour into the beauty and history of southern Italy, this three-day Naples, Pompeii, and Amalfi tour from Rome is probably the best option.

The tour will be a pleasant mix of guided and unguided time, which will allow you to venture off the beaten path, get away from the crowds, and do exactly what you want.

After the guided portions of your Naples and Pompeii stops, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Amalfi Coast, its beautiful beaches and the amazing seaside town and its stunning vistas.

The tour includes transportation and some meals but not museum admission – except in Pompeii.

12. Pompeii and Herculaneum Half-Day Private Tour

Pompeii

Though Pompeii’s sites really deserve a full day, if you haven’t got that much free time to spare, there are a few options that’ll give you a thorough look at the town’s attractions in only a few hours.

This private four-hour tour is available in nearly 10 languages. In addition to Pompeii, it includes a stop in Herculaneum; although smaller and less known than Pompeii, it’s actually a better-preserved site.

With the preserved items you’ll see and your guide’s careful explanation, the town will come to life, though the tragedy happened nearly 2,000 years ago.

13. Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and Winery Day Tour

Mount Vesuvius

Pompeii is an amazing town that’s one of the most historic and visited in all of Italy.

That being said, all that morbid chaos and death caused by the fateful volcanic eruption so many eons ago can be a little on the depressing side.

Though even in Pompeii you’re surrounded by natural beauty, it might be worth considering adding a few upbeat activities to your itinerary to mix things up a bit.

If this sounds like a good idea, consider this tour, which includes trips to Mount Vesuvius and a local winery located at the mountain’s base.

You’ll tour the vineyard and sample the wine varieties that are produced.

This tour includes transportation, but not admission fees to historical sites or food.

14. 2-Hour Walking Tour of Pompeii with Light Lunch

Pompeii Walking Tour

For those who don’t want to commit too much of their time to one tour, this two-hour walking tour with a light lunch is a great value.

You’ll still get to see the area’s excavations, architecture, and wonderfully preserved art, but the rest of your day will be wide open so you can go wherever your spirit takes you.

Your local and knowledgeable guide will fill in lots of amazing historical details about the city that was caught off guard and paid the ultimate price.

You’ll get an amazingly accurate insight into the daily lives of the common people who called the town home before it was ravaged.

15. Pompeii Fast Track Ticket

Remains Of Domus Di Paquio Proculo In Ruins Of Pompeii

If your Italian vacation has been full of guided tours with overly-verbose if well-meaning guides, this fast-track entrance ticket is a great way to see the sites of Pompeii on your own terms.

The tickets are good for a full day, so it’s up to you when you want to go.

This site hosts millions of visitors annually and will certainly be one of the visits that you won’t likely forget; it’s the final resting place of nearly 10,000 ancient people whose lives were unexpectedly taken so long ago.

Opening and closing times are great times to visit if you’re keen to avoid the crowds.

How To Visit Pompeii in 2024: Tickets, Hours, Tours, and More

Brandon Shaw Last Updated: March 26, 2024

How cool would it be to walk around an ancient Roman city with an incredible story? Well, you can at Pompeii. It’s one of the largest and best-preserved archeological sites on Earth! But where is it and how do you visit it? In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about how to visit Pompeii.

Pro Tip:  Planning to visit Pompeii? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re traveling. See our  guide to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast  for more planning resources and our top-rated Pompeii day trip from Rome and other Pompeii tours  for a memorable and easy trip.

Visiting Pompeii: What We’ll Cover

Pompeii was a booming port city in the ancient Roman Empire. But all that changed on August 24th, A.D. 79 when the Mt. Vesuvius volcano erupted. Those who were not killed by the missiles of pumice raining down or the lava were wiped out by the toxic gases.

This disastrous day for the Romans has given us an intimate look into what life was like in an ancient Roman city. The volcanic ash and mud from the eruption encased and preserved the city’s artefacts and some of the people’s bodies, clothes, and even places of business.

Over 2.5 million people visit the archeological site of Pompeii annually, taking a journey back in time. In this guide on how to visit Pompeii, we’ll cover:

  • Opening hours and tickets
  • How to get to Pompeii
  • What to see at Pompeii
  • Guided tour options
  • Where to eat nearby

Pompeii Opening Hours and Tickets

Plaster cast of a person laying on their side killed in the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii.

Pompeii is open to visitors every day of the week (with seasonal visiting hours) except on December 25, May 1, and January 1 when it is closed—unless otherwise communicated on the website.

Visiting Hours:

  • From April 1 to October 31: Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, last entrance at 5:30 pm.
  • From November 1 to March 31: Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, last entrance at 3:30 pm.

Certain villas are closed to the public on Tuesdays.

You can buy your tickets for the Pompeii Archaeological Park directly at the entrance. There are three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza Esedra.

You’ll most likely be entering through the Porta Marina, which is the entrance next to the train station and main parking area. It’s also the main ticket desk, so you can buy your ticket here and begin your adventure.

  • Adult Full Ticket: €18
  • Reduced: €2
  • Free under 6 years old

While seeing Pompeii is quite possible on your own, it’s worth considering booking a guided Pompeii tour . The guides at Pompeii are experts in archeological history and will help you understand what you’re seeing in a way that you can’t achieve on your own.

What may seem like a pile of rubble will come to life as a former home, kitchen, or shop from the past. It’s the best way to discover the ancient Roman way of life in the ruins of Pompeii. Book a guided morning tour with us for a more immersive experience!

How To Get To Pompeii

Ancient Roman columns in Pompeii archaeological park

Most people who visit Pompeii come by train from Naples. The good thing is that the train station where you need to get off is right in front of the entrance to the archeological park. It’s a quick walk to the entrance and you can’t miss it.

See the details below to get to Pompeii by train from Rome and the Amalfi Coast and directions for those who have rented a car.

The high-speed train from Rome to Naples runs every 20 minutes. You can take the train from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. Book on Trenitalia or through Italo. They are two competing train companies. I prefer Italo.

From Napoli Centrale, you can switch to the local train to Pompeii. The local train, called the Circumvesuviana, is located down the corridor in what is technically Napoli Garibaldi Station.

Take the train towards Sorrento and you’ll arrive at the Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri station after about 20 minutes. The station is a matter of feet from the entrance to the archaeological area.

If you choose to take the train to Pompeii on your own but are still looking for a guided tour, check out our Skip the Line Pompeii Ruins Tour with Villa of Mysteries .

If you’ve rented a car, it’s quite easy. Get on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and head onto the A1 highway to Naples. Once you get close to Naples you change to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or just add the destination to your GPS.

From the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the only town close to Pompeii with a train station. If you’re not in Sorrento, you’ll need to make your way there, jump on the train headed in the direction of Napoli Centrale, and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

For the adventurous souls who rent a car, get to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or use your GPS navigation.

Places To Eat Nearby

Options are fairly limited nearby as far as eating and refreshments go. However, if you’re famished or in need of a cup of coffee, here’s where to go:

Autogrill Pompeii : € | Refreshments —Calling it a cafeteria is a stretch, but it is the only place inside the archeological park to get some refreshments. It’s located behind the Temple of Jupiter.

Bar Sgambati : €€ | Quick Snack —This is the Bar/ Restaurant/ Pizzeria right next to the train station where you get off to visit Pompeii. The food and prices are average, but this is your best bet to get something to eat in the area before or after your trip to the archeological site.

Should I visit Pompeii or Herculaneum?

The biggest difference between Pompeii and Herculaneum is size: the ruins of Pompeii cover about 44 square hectaures, while Herculaneum covers just 4 .

Pompeii was an important city and trade center , while Herculaneum was a small resort town without the large public buildings (forum, amphitheater, theaters, gym) found in Pompeii.

However, Herculaneum is in a much better state of preservation due to the deep layer of ash and dust that covered the site, filling the buildings without damaging them. Pompeii was heavily battered by falling rocks and hot air that knocked down upper floors of buildings and incinerated wood, both of which are still intact at Herculaneum.

All things considered, if you only have time to see one site, choose Pompeii . Herculaneum is a good alternative if you don't want to do too much walking or if the temperatures are particularly scorching, as it has more shade than Pompeii.

We do not recommend visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, as it is simply too tiring.

The Ruins of Pompeii Recommended because: It's a unique example of a perfectly preserved Roman city with temples, theaters, homes, restaurants, and public buildings. More sites open to the public and a greater variety of architectures to visit. You can experience first-hand the majesty of a Roman forum, theater, and amphitheater. Not recommended if: You only have an hour or two, as it takes a significant amount of time and energy to visit. It's a particularly hot day, as there is little shade. Visit Pompeii ruins
The Ruins of Herculaneum Recommended because: It's a small town that was a resort destination in ancient times, and can be visited in less that two hours. There are multi-story houses, wooden furnishing and decorations, and perfectly preserved mosaic and sculptures to admire. Not recommended if: You only have time to visit either Pompeii or Herculaneum; we do not recommend attempting both in one day. You want to explore it all, as many of the houses and buildings are not open to the public. Visit Herculaneum ruins

Visiting the Crater on Mount Vesuvius

Combine a visit to the mount vesuvius national park with pompeii or herculaneum.

Instead of attempting to see both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, we suggest a trip up to the crater at the peak of Mount Vesuvius either before or after visiting one of the nearby archaeological ruins. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes suitable for a short hike up the trail.

Getting from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius Autobus EAV : From Piazza Anfiteatro and the Circumvesuviana Pompei Villa dei Misteri station, you can take the local EAV bus to the highest bus lot on Mount Vesuvius, where you can purchase tickets to the park and join a guided mountain hike. Buses depart every 50 minutes and ride takes about 55 minutes; tickets can be purchased on board for EUR 2.70.
Getting from Herculaneum to Mount Vesuvius Autobus Vesuvio Express : This bus departs from the Circumvesuviana Ercolano station and arrives at 1,050 meters above sea level. From here, you proceed on foot with a mountain guide (about a 20-minute walk). Departures every 40 minutes from 9:30am. Tickets: EUR 20 (bus + entrance to the Mount Vesuvius National Park).

Getting to Pompeii ruins from Sorrento or Naples

The easiest way to reach the Pompeii ruins from Sorrento or Naples is via the Circumvesuviana train that runs between Sorrento and Naples. The train leaves from Piazza Garibaldi in Naples from the underground platforms of the Napoli Centrale station. From the ground-level platforms where high-speed trains arrive and depart, follow the signs downstairs to platform 3 where trains to Pompeii depart. Note the displays that list the next departing train for Sorrento - Pompei so you don't end up in Sarno!

Stunning new Roman frescoes uncovered at Pompeii, the ancient Italian city frozen in time by a volcano

By Haley Ott

Updated on: April 11, 2024 / 10:06 AM EDT / CBS News

Stunning Roman frescoes have been uncovered by archeologists in Pompeii, the ancient city destroyed by an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Experts say the newly discovered frescoes are among the finest ever to emerge at the renowned archeological site.

The works of art line the high walls of what was once a large banquet hall. The walls themselves were painted mostly black, and the figures on the frescoes appear to emerge from the shadows. Site director Dr. Gabriel Zuchtriegel told CBS News partner network BBC News that the dark color was likely used to hide stains from the lamps that lit the hall after the sun went down.

"In the shimmering light, the paintings would have almost come to life," Zuchtriegel said.

Two pieces dominate the hall; one depicts the Greek god Apollo trying to seduce the priestess Cassandra. The second piece shows Prince Paris meeting Helen of Troy.

About a third of the "lost city" of Pompeii remains obscured by volcanic debris from the eruption almost two millennia ago. As scientists make new finds, they quickly move them to a storeroom to protect them from the elements.

The newly discovered frescoes, however, cannot be moved, so they have been protected with temporary roofing. Plaster glue is also being injected into the walls behind the artwork to stop them from falling down.

"We have a passion and a deep love for what we're doing, because what we're uncovering and protecting is for the joy also of the generations that come after us," chief restorer Dr. Roberta Prisco told the BBC, adding that the work was very stressful.

The dig site is much bigger than just the banquet hall.

Another fresco recovered from what was once one of Pompeii's grand properties had been on a ceiling, but it was smashed by the eruption that destroyed the city. Archeologists were able to lay out the pieces like a puzzle and recreate landscapes, theatrical masks, and Egyptian characters.

"This is my favorite discovery in this excavation because it is complex and rare," Dr. Alessandro Russo, co-lead archeologist on the dig, told the BBC. "It is high-quality, for a high-status individual."

paris-and-helen-credit-bbc-jonathan-amos.jpg

In a bakery next to the grand property, the skeletons of two adults and a child were discovered.

Archeologists believe they may have been slaves who were trapped and couldn't flee the eruption, and were killed by falling stones.

"When we excavate, we wonder what we're looking at," co-lead archeologist Dr. Gennaro Iovino told the BBC. "Much like a theater stage, you have the scenery, the backdrop, and the culprit, which is Mount Vesuvius. The archeologist has to be good at filling in the gaps — telling the story of the missing cast, the families and children, the people who are not there anymore."

The team's discovery was just one of a number of recent revelations from the site, after they found other mythological-themed frescoes in early March and then, just weeks later, a construction site that was being worked on right up until the eruption.

The archeologists said near the end of March that they'd found a home construction project that was frozen in time by the eruption, with materials such as bricks and tools still piled up in the reception area of the home.
