Post Office Travel Card Costs

Travel money cards from the Post Office cost nothing to order and no fees apply when you pay for purchases using the currency you hold. Provided your available balance is in a currency accepted by the card, you can shop, dine, and drink without any charges.

When using your card in a country that doesn’t support the currency of your card, you will have to pay a 3% foreign transaction fee. Using your card in Brazil, for example, will result in a 3% foreign transaction fee since the Brazilian Real isn’t a supported currency.

Despite the card’s currency support, you’ll still have to pay ATM withdrawal fees. Each currency has a different ATM fee. 

An example would be:

Regarding fees, one final note. There is a three-year validity period on all Post Office Travel cards. After your card expires, you will be charged a maintenance fee of £2 per month.

Exchange Rates

Exchange rates fluctuate based on the demand for currencies at the Post Office. Thus, you’ll receive a particular amount of travel money depending on the current exchange rate.

For travel money cards, you can get exchange rates at Post Office branches and on the website. Be sure to remember that rates may differ whether you are purchasing online, by phone, or in person.

In addition to the margin, the exchange rate at the Post Office will probably include a markup. When you search for the rate on Google or currency websites, you’ll most likely get an accurate one. Consequently, a margin will reduce the amount you receive when exchanging EUR, USD, or another currency.

A Post Office Travel Money company profits by offering its customers a better rate than the base rate. U.K. pounds are converted into U.S. dollars at a rate of 1.23 dollars per pound, for example.

For example, Monzo facilitates international money transfers through the popular exchange company Wise. For example, when sending a thousand pounds to a Swedish account using Monzo/Wise, the recipient receives 12,103 Swedish crowns versus 11,546 with Western Union, a difference of around 5%.

How to Get and Use a Post Office Travel Card?

Post Office travel cards are only available to UK residents over 18 years old.

Ordering Your Card

To order a Post Office Travel card, you can do one of three things:

  • You can order through the Post Office Travel app
  • Visit the Post Office website to apply online
  • Get your card at your local Post Office. It will be necessary to bring photo identification, like a passport or driver’s licence

Your card should be available immediately if you apply at a branch. Your card will be delivered within two to three days after you apply online or via the app.

Card Activation

It’s necessary to activate your travel card before you can use it. You’ll find detailed instructions in your welcome letter.

Using Your Card

ATMs and online sites that accept MasterCard accept Post Office travel cards, too. If you are buying something in person, you’ll need your PIN to verify your purchase and possibly your signature if the Chip and PIN system is not widely available in the country.

In some countries, contactless payments are also allowed for small amounts, although the rules and limitations vary.

According to its terms and conditions, you should not use your Post Office card in certain situations.

Adding Money to Your Card

With the Post Office Travel app, you can add money to your card easily. Additionally, you can add money at a local branch or on the Post Office website.

Each currency listed above can be topped up for between fifty pounds and five thousand pounds on your card. Your card can hold up to ten thousand pounds, as well as carry out transactions of up to thirty thousand pounds annually.

Common ordering questions

How much can i order online.

The minimum order is £400, and the maximum order is £2500.

Can I purchase more than one currency in an order?

Yes. When placing orders online, choose 'Add another currency'. If ordering in-branch, let the staff member know the full list of currencies and products you require.

Do I need an account to purchase travel money?

No. You will need to provide personal details during the order process, but you don't need an account login.

Do you offer phone orders?

Unfortunately, we don't have a central phone ordering facility. However, you can reserve currency by phone from your local branch if they have the stock available. Find details your local branch if you wish to contact them. If your local branch does not hold currency in store, they can pre-order this for you. Pre-orders can only be done by visiting the branch. The cut-off time for next-working-day delivery for branch pre-orders is 2pm.

Fees, charges and restrictions

Are there any fees when ordering travel money.

Any fees relating to commissions, card issuer, or delivery will be displayed during the order process. Please note that your credit card provider may charge a cash advance fee for buying travel money. When you place your order you will be given the option to select a preferred delivery date/time. Any additional charges (for instance ordering for home delivery on a Saturday or for home delivery orders under £500) will be displayed by the system.

Do you charge a fee for credit or debit cards, or any other fees?

Any fees relating to commissions, card issuer or delivery will be displayed during the order process.

Please note that your credit card provider may charge a cash advance fee for buying travel money. When you place your order, you will be given the option to select a preferred delivery date/time. Any applicable charges (for instance ordering for home delivery on a Saturday) will be displayed by the system.

Are there any export restrictions?

In the UK you must complete a cash declaration form if you plan to take out (or return with) €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in any currency, in cash (notes and Travellers’ Cheques).

Completing orders

How will i know that a transaction has been successful.

An on-screen confirmation message of your order will be displayed to advise if your order has been accepted or declined. If your order has gone through, you will also receive a confirmation via email. Where possible, you should print this and take it with you if you are collecting your order from a Post Office branch.

When will my payment card be debited?

As soon as you select the 'Place order' button we will validate your card and the availability of funds. If your order is accepted, funds will be allocated against your card immediately.

Will I receive a call from you in relation to my order?

It may be necessary for us to request further information from you so that the order can be completed or to comply with regulatory requirements. It is therefore important that you provide the correct contact details during the order process. You will be notified by First Rate if, for whatever reason, your order cannot be confirmed.

When will I receive my order?

General ordering:

  • Orders placed Monday – Friday by 3pm are available the next day, including Saturday for collection from a branch or home delivery
  • Orders placed after 3pm are available the following working day, including Saturday

Orders incorporating same day collections:

  • Orders placed Monday to Friday by 9am are available after 11am the same working day
  • Orders placed Monday to Friday by 2pm are available 2 hours after the order is placed on the same working day
  • Orders placed Monday to Friday after 2pm are available the next working day after 11am
  • Orders placed on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday are available the next working day after 11am

Can I cancel my order?

Cancellation can only be undertaken prior to dispatch of your order. A £20 cancellation fee may apply.

General questions

How can i get currency today.

When placing your order, you select the collection/delivery date of your choice. An option is available to obtain currency the same day, providing that there are branches in the local area that have sufficient currency stocks to fulfil your order. If there aren't any, this choice won't be displayed in the dropdown list. You will, however, be offered a home or branch delivery service which is available next working day, provided you order before 3pm.

How can I find out if my branch holds currency in stock?

Our  branch finder  will display your local branch. Simply enter your postcode and choose the "Travel and foreign currency" indicator from the "Products and services" list.

Which denominations will I receive?

We appreciate that it is always handy to have a few lower denominations available for small purchases at the start of your travels. Therefore your order will be fulfilled using the denominations available, wherever possible supplying you with a mix of banknotes.

I’m having trouble using the website. What should I do?

Please make sure you’re using the latest version of your internet browser. We have a fully mobilised purchase journey, but if you are using a mobile device and experiencing problems it may be easier to start the process again on a desktop device. If you’re using a smartphone, please ensure you are using portrait view to minimise issues whilst ordering.

Delivery questions

Does someone need to be available to sign for my delivery.

Yes. If you have selected home delivery then the order will need to be signed for. Your order will always be delivered to the card billing address you entered when you placed the order. The order will be delivered by Royal Mail Special Delivery™.

Can I have my order delivered to a different location?

You can collect your order from the branch chosen during the order process. If you have selected home delivery, your order can only be delivered to the billing address of your payment card to protect you from any unauthorised card use.

If my order does not arrive on time, whom should I contact?

Please call 0345 8500 900 during our office hours, which are Monday to Saturday from 8:30am to 5:30pm.

What happens if no one is available at home to sign for the order?

If no one is at the billing address when the order is delivered, the order will automatically go to your local Royal Mail sorting office. Royal Mail will leave a 'sorry we missed you' card and you will be required to collect the item from your local sorting office the next day or arrange re-delivery.

Identification checks

Do i need to bring identification if i’m buying or exchanging currency in a branch.

If you are buying currency and paying by card then you will need to bring one of the following;

  • Valid passport
  • Valid Full UK or EEA photocard driving licence
  • EEA identity card

We cannot accept anything other than one of these documents. We may also ask for ID for some cash transactions and we may need to verify your identity electronically while you are at the counter (this is not a credit check). You will need to have a permanent UK residential address in order for us to be able to do this. We will not be able to proceed with the transaction if we cannot verify your identity.

I wanted to buy or exchange currency in a branch and had the right ID. Why did I fail your checks?

There are a number of reasons why we may not have been able to verify your identity, such as the following;

  • It could be because you have recently moved, or changed your name
  • It might also be because you may not have a permanent residential address in the UK or that the details on your identification do not match the details that are kept on record for you

In order to comply with card issuer, banking and crime prevention requirements we must be able to verify your identity. If we cannot verify your identity we cannot proceed with the transaction.

More about ID checks

What kind of check do you carry out is it a credit check or will it affect my credit rating.

The check that we carry out in-branch is to confirm that the details you are providing in relation to your name, address and the details on your identification document are correct, and that there is no reason for us not to sell you currency. We use an identity-checking service to accomplish this. This is not a credit check and it won’t affect your credit rating, however the check will be recorded against your details and will be visible to anyone carrying out a similar reference check.

Why do you have to carry out a check on me?

Financial sanctions are restrictions put in place by the UN, EU or UK to achieve a specific foreign policy or national security objective. Post Office is prohibited from carrying out certain activities if financial sanctions apply. A breach of these requirements may result in a criminal prosecution or a monetary penalty.

What is a soft credit search or ‘footprint’?

Not every instance of your credit report being checked by an organisation will result in a visible ‘footprint’ being left on your report. There is such a thing as a ‘soft credit search’ or a ‘soft credit check’, which is recorded in your credit history, but is not visible to other lenders. This includes things such as identity checks, where a company confirms the details you have provided are correct. Soft searches are recorded on your credit report so that there is a transparent record of who has been viewing your credit history, but should not affect your creditworthiness.

Does the ID verification check leave a credit footprint?

No. However, it does leave a soft ID footprint on your credit file which should not affect your credit rating.

How do i know which currency to order.

Please contact us on 0345 8500 900 Monday to Saturday from 8:30am to 5:30pm for advice on what is the best currency to take.  

Why can’t I find the currency I want to buy?

There are restrictions on a number of currencies that prevent us being able to buy and sell them, including Indian rupee, Moroccan dirham, Sri Lankan rupee, and Tunisian dinar.

If your preferred currency is not on the dropdown list of currencies when you are entering the amount, we do not currently stock it.

Why can’t I order Indian rupees?

This currency is restricted and cannot be sold outside of India. We suggest you change your currency on arrival at your destination.

How can I find out the currency restrictions for where I’m going?

Certain countries have restrictions on the amount of currency you can take in and out per person. These limits can usually be found on that country's government website. Alternatively, contact us on 0345 8500 900, Monday to Saturday from 8:30am to 5:30pm.

Branch exchange rates depend on several factors, eg branch location, competition, cost of order, convenience, etc. We will always try and offer the best rate, subject to this criteria. As with many retailers, the cheapest order / distribution method is online, where centralised packing costs can be used. This is why online exchanges are invariably better than branch rates.

Do all your branches have the same rate?

How can I check what rate of exchange is being applied?

Now, the post office application has been very useful, as one can top up money whilst travelling as well as check ones balance on the travel money card. In conclusion, lastly, I found the travel money card particularly useful on 16th November 2019, evening time as one can search for useful tips and questions that one maybe concerned about before travelling, during and after travel, and for me, I found this application extremely useful, as there was information I needed to know before my travel, such as the currency of the country I am travelling to, and where to obtain the currency of the country I am travelling to shortly. Moreover, I thank the developers for making this useful, and appropriate travel application as I believe it is a safe as well as secure method of travelling with money, to the country of ones choice instead of carrying loads of cash around in different currencies, and risking theft issues or lost issues. Also, I found the help and advice section on the website useful, as I had forgotten my PIN number as I never used my travel money card for a while, and I was able to call up a number from the travel money website, and follow the on phone instructions to retrieve my PIN number once again. Dreadful new App not working for 3 days now

Rang customer services 3 days ago now as newly downloaded App top up button gives an error that it can’t fetch the rates right now so have to go on main website to do that. Then when you use the card it doesn’t update the balance. It retrieve the pin either. The card was then unsupported in an ATM when I tried doing a balance enquiry. Different information from service staff who told me I needed to load another £50 minimum on card and buy something using chip and pin to use card for for first time. However that’s £3 commission just to load on £50 of your own money ! I don’t even need sterling on the card as the whole point is for using it abroad to TRAVEL!! So I had already bought Euros. The lady in the post office said I can’t use the card at all for online purchases however I managed to pay for my holiday eventually over the phone in euros once they had removed the security 3 times! A smarter assistant also said I don’t need to add sterling to buy something in U.K. - the euros will auto convert- which they did. Still stuck with a non working app and took 3 hours to finally get the card loaded and working to pay for holiday. Agh. Why so complicated

Local main clearing bank closed its branch. Called into the post office for some euro as the rate was in line and it was convenient accessible and handy and I was in a hurry. The staff were friendly, practical, product knowledgeable and the advice, service and overall helpfulness was first rate. I’m currently overseas and have used my card without problem; I have topped up using the app, again with no apparent problem. I don’t have the worry of carrying a lot of cash or suffering retailer ripoff rate charges. So overall a great service. Thank you Post Office, Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. PS. I’m an older less tech savvy person so I would recommend this travel aide to all ages.

Hi, has anyone any experience, good or bad, of the Post Office Travel Money card, or any alternatives, please?

Post Office one seems straight forward and saves carrying loads of cash but have read some negative comments and am worried that I put all my holiday money on there then can't access it.

Travel is imminent so no time to apply for a specialist travel credit/bank card now unfortunately - should have been more organised!

I'm from Australia, so not exact same brands, but we used travel money cards exclusively.

Loaded them up in months prior whenever the exchange rate was good.

I know you don't have time for that, but online should be able to sort cards out before you go.

I went with 2 different banks, used one and kept one as emergency funds, stored it seperate in case of lost/theft of 'main' card.

No issues use it like a credit card & away you go.

My daughter transferred extra funds to hers on the fly as well, which was literally instantaneous.

Thanks Debbie - makes me feel a bit better. Mainly to do with the app, issues with topping up, annoying sounds telling everyone that you are topping up and by how much ( though am not bothered by this as would not top up in public place anyway), card having credit but not working ....

Thanks kaybwilson - think my options are limited at this stage - spent too long planning what I am going to do and forgot about practicalities! The exchange rate is so poor at the moment I don't think it is going to make much difference financially what I go with, my bank account is a no no as they charge a non sterling transaction fee of 3% each time! Recently used a Post Office Money Card in Poland in a Bankomat machine. Ended up with the money being transacted out of my Polish currency wallet, into £s then back into local currency - so ended up with THREE different exchange transactions for one local currency withdrawal. Also, when getting the card it can take up to two days to find out whether your money has ended up where it should (check your till receipt for the amount of time!). Apparently there is some small print in the T&Cs about 'declining' when asked if you want 'local' currency in order to not have the extra currency transactions - it is NOT 'just the same as using an ATM in your home country' - apparently the 'local' being referred to is YOUR country not the one you are in. I cannot recommend this card. You have too many places to look for information, a code and a pin to remember! And for my £300 in Polish currency, overall it cost me over £40 for the privilege compared to just taking cash in Euros or £s and exchanging it! On calling the PO they said it 'wasn't supposed to do that' but with no other explanation as to how to avoid it. Best advice - AVOID THIS CARD.

I used the Thomas Cook travel currency card which worked fine. You load it with what ever currency you need so no exchange rates. You will be charged though if you have money left over and you want to change it back to Sterling. You use it like a bank card.

I considered the PO one but im sure there was a limit you could load on it too which i wasnt keen on.

Generally, you should apply for your new passport as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally—at least several months in advance. Passport processing times may vary, so be sure to check the latest State Department service estimates . First-time applicants, minors, and applicants who need a new passport but may not renew by mail may submit their passport application at the Post Office. Step 2: Prepare Your Application Package

Visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn how to apply for a passport and what documents you need.

  • Print your completed application. DO NOT SIGN YOUR APPLICATION. A Postal employee must witness your signature.
  • Have a passport photo taken.
  • Photocopy your proof of identity and U.S. Citizenship documents.
  • Post Offices accept credit cards, checks, and money orders for Post Office acceptance fees.
  • State Department fees are mailed with your application. You can pay with a personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's check, or money order, payable to "U.S. Department of State."

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Post Offices that offer passport services have set hours, and you'll need to schedule an appointment using the online Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler or a Post Office lobby self-service kiosk.

Scheduling Online

  • Go to Schedule an Appointment .
  • Choose the passport service you need, along with the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
  • You can search for appointment by location or date first. If you search by location first, you'll then be asked to choose a date and time; if you search by date first, you'll then need to choose a location and time.
  • After you choose your appointment location and time, provide your contact information, and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Click Review Appointment , then confirm your appointment.

If you need to modify or cancel your appointment, click the Manage Appointments tab and enter your confirmation number and email address or phone number.

Using a Self-Service Kiosk

  • Go to a Post Office location with lobby self-service kiosks. Find USPS Locations
  • At the self-service kiosk, touch the screen to begin, then select "Other Services," then "Passport Scheduler."
  • Choose the passport service you need, then enter the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
  • Search for Post Office locations by ZIP Code™ or City/State and choose a location.
  • Select an available appointment date and time, then agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  • Enter your contact information and decide if you'd like to receive SMS text notifications.
  • Review and confirm your information, then select “Schedule Appointment” to finalize.
  • Take your printed receipt listing your confirmation number and appointment details.

Step 4: Pay Passport Acceptance & Processing Fees

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees, the application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra. Learn how to calculate fees and what you can use to pay for them.

Application Acceptance Fees – Postal Service

Pay acceptance fees in person at the Post Office. You may pay by check or money order, payable to "Postmaster," debit card, or credit card.

  • $35.00 - Post Office acceptance fee
  • $15.00 - Post Office photo fee (if needed)

Application Processing Fees – Department of State

State Department payment is sent with your application package. State Department fees are paid separately from USPS fees.

  • State Department Fees State Department passport fees vary. Calculate passport fees online .
  • Personal, certified, cashier's, or traveler's check, payable to "U.S. Department of State."
  • Money order payable to "U.S. Department of State." You can buy a money order at the Post Office with cash, a debit card, or a traveler's check. You cannot pay with a credit card.

Application Status Updates

  • Use the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are on their way to the Department of State. Renew a Passport by Mail

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail .

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility to Renew by Mail

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

You can renew your adult passport by mail if you answer "Yes" to all 5 of the following statements:

Your passport:

  • Is in your possession to submit with your application.
  • Is undamaged other than normal "wear and tear."
  • Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
  • Was issued within the last 15 years.
  • Was issued in your current name or you can document your name change. (Name changes are explained on Change a Passport .)

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

State Department Renew by Mail

Apply early for renewals as many countries require that passports be valid for at least 6 months after you enter their country. Learn how to properly prepare your application package and include all the necessary documents so your passport is processed on time.

  • Complete your Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 on the State Department website.
  • Print and sign your DS-82 form.
  • Have a passport photo taken. You can schedule a passport photo-only appointment at a Post Office ™ location.
  • Calculate your passport renewal fees .
  • Collect your most recent passport, completed and signed application, renewal fees, and name change documents, if needed.
  • Use an envelope large enough to fit the application without folding it.
  • TIP : Pay for Priority Mail Express ® or Priority Mail ® service and get free envelopes that are large enough to hold your application. Order easily online: Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope or Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope .
  • Address the envelope to the location for your state. See page 2 of your DS-82 form.

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Prosecutors and Trump’s attorneys delivered opening statements and the first witness — a former National Enquirer publisher — was called Monday in the historic and unprecedented criminal trial of a former president.

Each side got their first chance to lay out a theory of the case for jurors. Prosecutors told jurors that the reimbursement of hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels was part of a larger conspiracy to influence the 2016 presidential election.

The former president’s attorneys responded by telling the jury that Trump was innocent and not involved in the creation of the 34 business records he’s charged with falsifying. They also pointedly added that there’s “nothing wrong with trying to influence an election.”

Here are key takeaways from Monday:

  • Prosecutors say Trump schemed "to corrupt the 2016 presidential election": The district attorney’s office framed the case for jurors as illegal payments to try to influence illicitly influence the 2016 election that Trump then tried to illegally cover up by falsifying business records. He testified for less than 30 minutes Monday morning before the trial adjourned for the day. He’s expected to continue testifying Tuesday. Colangelo teed up the former tabloid publisher as a key player in Trump’s “catch and kill” scheme to control the public narrative about him ahead of the 2016 election.
  • Gag order hearing will lead off court on Tuesday: Before the trial resumes Tuesday, Judge Juan Merchan is holding a hearing on allegations that Trump violated the judge’s gag order barring discussion of witnesses. The district attorney’s office asked the judge to fine Trump $1,000 for each of several gag order violations leading up to and since the trial started. In addition to the fines, prosecutors want the judge to remind Trump he could be imprisoned if he continues to disobey the order.
  • Trump was thinking about the $175 million bond hearing down the street: Meanwhile, other lawyers for Trump were in a courtroom a block away arguing over the legitimacy of the $175 million bond Trump posted to appeal the judgment in his civil fraud trial. Trump, who could not attend the civil hearing because he’s required to attend each day of the criminal trial, railed against Attorney General Letitia James.

Fact check: Trump falsely claims Michael Cohen’s crimes "had nothing to do with me"

Speaking to reporters Monday after opening statements in his criminal trial in Manhattan, former President Donald Trump declared that the crimes committed by his former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen “had nothing to do with me.” 

Cohen is expected to be a key  witness for the prosecution . Trump said: “The things he got in trouble for were things that had nothing to do with me. He got in trouble; he went to jail. This has nothing to do with me. This had to do with the taxicab company that he owned, which is just something he owned – and medallions and borrowing money and a lot of things – but it had nothing to do with me.” 

Facts First:  Trump’s claim that Cohen’s prison sentence “had nothing to do with me” is false. Cohen’s three-year sentence in 2018 was for  multiple crimes , some of which were directly related to Trump. Most notably, Cohen was sentenced for  campaign finance offenses   connected to a hush money scheme  during the 2016 presidential campaign to conceal Trump’s alleged extramarital relationships -- the same hush money scheme that is central to this prosecution against Trump. Cohen was  also sentenced to two months in prison , to run concurrently with the three-year sentence, for  lying to Congress in 2017 in relation to previous talks about the possibility of building a Trump Tower in Moscow, Russia , including about the  extent of Trump’s involvement in the aborted Moscow initiative  and about when in 2016 the discussions ended. (The discussions continued into June 2016, the month after Trump  became the presumptive Republican nominee , and did not conclude in January 2016 before the first votes were cast, as Cohen had claimed.)

Referring to Trump as “Individual-1,” Cohen  said  at the time of his 2018 guilty plea for making false statements to the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence: “I made these statements to be consistent with Individual-1’s political messaging and out of loyalty to Individual-1.” When Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to the campaign finance violations, he  said  he broke the law “in coordination and at the direction of a candidate for federal office,” Trump. 

David Pecker is an important witness in prosecutor's quest to prove criminal intent, legal analyst says

David Pecker will be back on the stand on Tuesday to continue testimony in the hush money trial against former President Donald Trump. Not only is he the first witness to answer questions from the prosecution, but he is also a critical piece of how the state is trying to prove criminal intent, one former federal prosecutor said.

Criminal intent means that “not just an act happened, but an act happened for a purpose,” said Elliot Williams, a CNN legal analyst. “The defendant did something wrong to carry out some criminal purpose.”

As the then-chairman of American Media Inc., which publishes the National Enquirer, Pecker was involved in numerous “catch-and-kill” schemes he orchestrated on behalf of Trump, and he allegedly helped broker the deal with adult film star Stormy Daniels which is at the center of  the case.

“It’s not just the catch-and-kill payments, but catch-and-kill payments for the purpose of concealing information from voters in the context of an election,” Williams explained, referring to the 2016 presidential election. 

Williams said it’s likely that prosecutors will focus much of their questioning trying to uncover what was discussed in meetings between Pecker and Trump.

The question at the heart of the argument, Williams said, is if the payments were intended to conceal information from voters, “or was it just Donald Trump saying, ‘Well, you know, this is embarrassing to my wife and my kids, I really want to keep this hidden.’”

Former President Donald Trump’s first criminal trial is expected to take six to eight weeks from start to finish.

This trial, related to a  hush money payment  to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016, is the first of  four ongoing criminal cases  that are expected to head to trial for the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee.

Now that opening statements are done, prosecutors are presenting trial evidence through witness testimony and exhibits. David Pecker, the ex-publisher of the National Enquirer, will resume testimony Tuesday.

Defense attorneys can cross examine the prosecution’s witnesses and typically aim to discredit their testimony. Witnesses’ responses are considered evidence, but not the questions posed by an attorney.

Michael Cohen jabs back at Trump's claim that Cohen's crimes have nothing to do with him

Michael Cohen, who is expected to be a key witness in Donald Trump’s criminal trial, jabbed back at his former boss in response to comments Trump made about him outside the courtroom Monday.

Speaking to reporters in the courtroom hallway after court concluded, Trump said Cohen’s crimes have “nothing to do with me."

“He got in trouble, he went to jail. This has nothing to do with me,” said Trump. “This had to do with the taxicab company that he owned, which is just something he owned — and medallions and borrowing money.”

Shortly after those comments. Cohen posted on social media, “Hey Von ShitzInPantz … your attacks of me stink of desperation. We are all hoping that you take the stand in your defense. 

Cohen, who is Trump’s former attorney, served time in federal prison after pleading guilty to breaking federal campaign laws when he facilitated the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, which is directly linked to the charges against Trump.  As for the taxi medallions that Trump referenced, Cohen was also sentenced for tax evasion related to a taxi medallion enterprise and lying to a bank in relation to a home loan. 

Trump is under a gag order and was ordered by Judge Juan Merchan not to comment about any witnesses in the trial.

Biden builds early advertising edge as Trump spends millions on legal fees

President Joe Biden and his allies have nearly tripled Donald Trump’s network in ad spending over the last month and a half while the former president has had to devote millions of campaign funds to legal expenses — and sit in a New York courthouse for his hush money trial.

Since March 6, after Super Tuesday when Trump effectively secured the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, through April 21, Biden’s campaign and other Democratic advertisers spent $27.2 million on advertising for the presidential race, while the Trump campaign and GOP advertisers spent about $9.3 million, according to AdImpact data.

During that time, Biden's campaign has spent millions in key battleground states, including $4.1 million in Michigan, $3.9 million in Pennsylvania, and at least $2 million in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Georgia. And the Biden network has used its plentiful airtime to promote the administration’s first-term record and slam Trump, focusing on key issues such as the  cost of living  and  abortion rights .

Meanwhile, Trump’s network has failed to match that effort since he became the presumptive nominee, though a pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., recently ramped up its advertising, booking over $1 million worth of airtime in Pennsylvania to coincide with Biden’s recent campaign swing through the state last week.

Trump has also benefited over that stretch from a nearly $3 million anti-Biden campaign from outside groups aligned with the oil and gas industries, which have been  running ads  in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, criticizing California fuel standards  defended  by the Biden administration. But despite some recent signs of activity, Trump’s network has been significantly outspent on the airwaves since his general election matchup with Biden came into focus. And  the latest round of FEC filings  shows how Biden’s fundraising edge is enabling that advertising advantage, as Trump’s ongoing legal battles drain millions from his campaign coffers.  

How we got here: A timeline of the Donald Trump and Stormy Daniels hush money case

The first criminal trial of a US ex-president is underway in New York, where former President Donald Trump faces charges from the Manhattan District attorney related to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016. 

This is the first of four criminal cases expected to go to trial for Trump, also the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee. CNN compiled a timeline of the key events leading up to the historic trial. 

Here’s how we got here: 

  • September 2016: Donald Trump discusses a $150,000 hush money payment understood to be for former Playboy model Karen McDougal with Michael Cohen who secretly records the conversation . McDougal has alleged she had an extramarital affair with Trump beginning in 2006, which he has denied. 
  • October 7, 2016: The Washington Post releases an "Access Hollywood" video from 2005 in which Trump uses vulgar language to describe his sexual approach to women with then show host Billy Bush. 
  • October 27, 2016: According to prosecutors, Cohen pays Daniels $130,000 to her attorney through a shell company in exchange for her silence about an affair she allegedly had with Trump in 2006. This $130,000 sum is separate from the $150,000 paid to McDougal. Trump has publicly denied having any affairs and has denied making the payments. 
  • November 8, 2016: Trump secures the election to become the 45th president of the United States. 
  • February 2017: Prosecutors say Cohen meets with Trump in the Oval Office to confirm how he would be reimbursed for the hush money payment Cohen fronted to Daniels. Under the plan, Cohen would send a series of false invoices requesting payment for legal services he performed pursuant to a retainer agreement and receive monthly checks for $35,000 for a total of $420,000 to cover the payment, his taxes and a bonus, prosecutors alleged. Prosecutors also allege there was never a retainer agreement. 
  • January 2018: The Wall Street Journal breaks news about the hush money payment Cohen made to Daniels in 2016.

Trump is also facing charges in 3 other criminal cases

The hush money criminal trial against former President Donald Trump is just one of  four criminal cases  he faces while juggling his presidential campaign.

The former president is facing at least  88 charges  over the four criminal indictments in Georgia, New York, Washington, DC, and Florida. Trump has pleaded not guilty to every charge in these cases. 

Here's a recap of each case: 

  • Hush money:  Trump was first indicted in March 2023 by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to a hush-money payment to an adult film star in 2016. Prosecutors allege Trump was part of an illegal conspiracy to  undermine  the integrity of the 2016 election. Further, they allege he was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, including the $130,000 payment. 
  • Classified documents:  Trump was indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury in Miami for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after he left office and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. The National Archives said in early 2022 that at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from the estate, including   some that were classified . The charges were brought by special counsel Jack Smith. 
  • Federal election interference:  Smith separately charged the former president last August with four crimes over his efforts to reverse the 2020 election results. The indictment alleges Trump and a co-conspirator "attempted to exploit the violence and chaos at the Capitol by calling lawmakers to convince them ... to delay the certification" of the election. That case is currently on hold as the Supreme Court weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in the matter. 
  • Fulton County:  State prosecutors in Georgia brought a similar election subversion case against Trump and others. An Atlanta-based grand jury on August 14, 2023, indicted Trump and 18 others on state charges stemming from their alleged efforts to overturn the former president’s 2020 electoral defeat. A trial date has not yet been set in that case.
