I would recommend Arkana a million... - Arkana Spiritual Center (Amazon) - Ayahuasca Retreats

I would recommend Arkana a million times over

I knew what I wanted and I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted (and felt like I needed and was called to do) Ayahuasca and I knew I was being called to the jungle of Peru to do this. What I didn’t know, was WHERE to go. I looked at a few different places, but I kept being called back to Pulse Tours or Arkana as it became to be known. I wanted safe, but also wanted rustic. I was not looking for a vacation or a retreat or a spa. I’ve done Ayahuasca previously, so I was not going for an “experience” but instead was looking for the healing power the plant could lend to me. I knew my intentions and what I wanted to explore, I just needed the place that could help facilitate this desire. Arkana did this and actually exceeded my expectations! I did a 2 week intensive and what I ended up experiencing was love, friendship, self introspection, massive amounts of present moment awareness and a solid foundation in which to move forward in life and to recall in times of doubt or stress. I initially made the choice of Arkana based on my own feelings, the reviews available and from my other research . . . It was all well founded. This was a bit of a spiritual journey for me and I really was able to take in the... I knew what I wanted and I knew where I wanted to go. I initially made the choice of Arkana based on my own feelings, the reviews available and from my other research . . . It was all well founded. This was a bit of a spiritual journey for me and I really was able to take in the entire experience on my trip to Peru and to Iquitos to meet up with the group. Arriving and getting ready was easy and was well organized. Alise and Angel were absolutely what my journey needed. Soft and calm, but also very strong and safe vibe they exuded. The Center itself, while still perfectly rustic, was also so much more well put together than what I expected. In embarking on a journey of this magnitude and where you are going to be willingly subjecting yourself to a very strong substance, safety and comfort is a huge contributor to ensuring that the effectiveness is optimal. The last thing I wanted was to be worried about all this given everything else that I was hoping to go into. Arkana and the staff were absolutely vital and amazing. I can not, nor would I want to imagine any different scenario or group of facilitators and shamans than what I experienced. Back on the center, I found it safe and comforting. The location was ideal on the edge of the jungle but right on a little tributary to the Amazon. Falcon was an amazing guide on all the excursions and was a ton of fun. The meals were well prepared and were actually a lot more tasty than what I was expecting. I truly enjoyed the 2 week cleanse. The ceremony nights themselves were magical, even if every one of them was not necessarily filled with rainbows and lollipops. My first week I was with a huge group and my second week I was with a small group and both weeks were perfect. We had 3 shamans and 4 facilitators each ceremony, which during one night equated to a 1:1 ratio. I thought the shamans were perfect for my experience and Rob and Weronka made the ceremonies so amazing, easing us out of the evening and into the morning with their music and song. Bronte and Christian rounded out our facilitators and each one was just so absolutely special in the energy they contribute to the circle. All in all, if you are wanting an Ayahuasca, in a safe setting, that honors the plant in the way that was intended with people who contribute so positively to the space everyone is in, Arkana is by far a wonderful selection and I fully endorse coming here. Jungle Retreat review; Such an amazing resort. It is the jungle, so bugs and creatures are around. The resort was very clean, or as clean as the jungle can be. But after a dose of Aya, you really don't care about trivial things anymore; At least I don't. It's got all your needs covered, wifi is a bit crap, but you can send messages and use the phone. The activities and therapy provided was top notch. Facilitators were caring, compassionate, and there was no judgement or negativity the whole week. I wish the whole world operated like this. Ayahuasca taught me things about myself that I really can't express over a review. But if you are interested in a life changing experience of love and compassion and understanding. This is a good place to do it. I heard locals say "That's a great resort! you're going to a good place" and found they were right. A few people had been to other resorts with other shamans, and they weren't comparable to this place. The therapy and shamans were authentic and focused on healing. They never asked for anything of us, other than to be openminded. It's been 3 weeks now, and I want to go back for longer. Wish I had 2 weeks to spend there. PS. Its a difficult process on ayahuasca, just surrender and accept what comes.

I did my first 4 Ayahuasca ceremonies at Arkana in the Amazon, which I am deeply thankful that I did! I was looking for the perfect center for almost two months prior to my trip, then my Shaman friend gave me the OK after showing him this place. This retreat is perfect for anyone who wants to get into Ayahuasca, either if you are a first timer or a long time Ayahuasca adventurer, this place is simply incredible. The food, the people working there and the Shamans. They are all incredible and they will make you feel safe and loved from when you first arrive. The Shamans are very powerful and their singing amazing! The Ayahuasca is also fairly strong there, as I did my preparations it was enough to breakthrough on a single cup. The facilities are great with comfortable rooms, a beautiful outdoor area and they even manage to provide wifi for some crazy reason. You would not think that is possible all the way out there. Of course, wifi is not really needed and should be used at a minimum while focusing on Aya, but for me that has work on the go wherever I travel, this was very helpful to me. If you're looking for an amazing and safe place to do your Ayahuasca journeys, Arkana is definitely the place to go! I can not wait to go back and learn more from the people working there, as well as the plant :)

  • Cleanliness

There are no words for Arkana. Its hands down the best place I've ever stayed . From the moment I walked through their doors I was made feel like family. The accomodation to the food was perfect and the staff were absolutely fantastic and super friendly. I will all hold this place close to my heart , Arkana I thank you very much for an unforgettable experience ☘❤

Could not have asked for a better time. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The facilitators were thoughtful, smart, wise, kind, and intentional. The whole process felt geared toward productive experiences with ayahuasca, and the folks at Arkana have made this their life's work. It shows. I highly recommend this place and will be back. Love.

I had a 14 day retreat, one week in the Amazone Jungle Retreat and one week at the Sacred Valley Retreat. It was the most eye opening experience I've had in my life! traumas i didnt even know that i had were comming up and finally left my system! Things from my birth, that i never thought would influence my life became so clear to me. I could finally comprehend and understand knowledge I've had for a long time, but knowledge is only in the head, and this Ayahuasca Retreat made it possible for me to take that knowledge into my heart and through integration i can transform it into Wisdom. The Jungle retreat was amazing (besides the Mosquitos and Spiders, but thats a small adjustment to get used to), I felt really connected to the Jungle and the Ayahuasca Medicine! The Facilitators were all very professional and kind! And the Shamans in my opinion were an amazing help and guide during the ceremonies and were really helpful and insightful in the group shares. The Arkana Amazone Jungle Spiritual Center was the perfect first Ayahuasca experience for me, and i would recommend it to anyone thats thinking about trying to work with this sacred medicine! The Arkana Spiritual Center in Sacred Valley felt like luxury after being in the Jungle for a week. There i felt like I've got so much knowledge about the importance of the Breath in the Breathworks, I've learned about how important Intentions are and how powerful our way of thinking and believes are! The Excursions we had were really intresting, to learn about those ancient cultures and old believes was really humbling! and the Tourguides at both the Jungle center and Sacred Valley were so kind and explained everything you could think of asking them! Long story short, if youre thinking about going to an Ayahuqsca retreat, i honestly dont think there is a better choice than Arkana!

The Best Ayahuasca Retreats for First-Timers

pulse tours peru

  • Author: Andrew Tansil
  • Published: May 7, 2023
  • Topic: Ayahuasca

If you're considering an ayahuasca retreat, it's important to choose one that's right for you. Here are some of the best ayahuasca retreats for first-timers, based on our experience.

Introduction to Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca , a natural herbal drink, has gained worldwide recognition for its medicinal and spiritual properties. Through the ages, Ayahuasca has been used for its therapeutic effects on physical, psychological and emotional health. Its popularity has led to an extensive range of Ayahuasca retreats across different continents offering unique experiences for first-timers.

These retreats offer immersive environments where participants learn about the history, traditions and spirituality of Ayahuasca. The ceremonies involve drinking a brew made from two plants – ayahuasca vine and chacruna leaves – under the guidance of experienced shamans or facilitators. The rituals aim to create a vision quest that helps individuals gain greater insight into their being while experiencing profound physical and emotional healing.

Apart from traditional Ayahuasca retreats, sessions are now conducted in luxury resorts or comfortable accommodations with all necessary amenities. Retreat centers are located amidst nature providing various activities like yoga classes, swimming pools or hikes in natural surroundings. Participants are advised to maintain a strict diet before attending ceremonies as well as during the entire stay ensuring safe ingestion of Ayahuasca.

Pro Tip: Research properly before selecting any Ayahuasca retreat as they vary not just in geographical locations but also in terms of shamanic practices followed and accommodation offered. Choose wisely by keeping your preferences in mind for an enriching experience that stays with you forever.

Ayahuasca retreats may sound like a trip, but don’t forget to research the destination before taking that trip…literally.

Factors to consider when choosing an Ayahuasca Retreat

To make an informed decision on the ideal Ayahuasca retreat, you need to factor in specific aspects when selecting one. The section providing insight into this is “Factors to consider when choosing an Ayahuasca Retreat.” This section unravels the crucial parameters that should be considered when selecting Ayahuasca retreats. Subsequently, we will explore these sub-sections: Location and Accessibility, Reputation and Reviews, and Healing Programs offered.

Location and Accessibility

For a successful Ayahuasca Retreat, considering the location and accessibility is crucial. Factors like distance, terrain, climate and transportation can greatly impact the experience of the retreat. A proper location selection also ensures locals surrounding who are professionally trained in handling ayahuasca safely.

To make an informed decision regarding the Location and Accessibility of an intended Ayahuasca Retreat, several points must be kept in mind. Below is a table including some essential factors to consider:

FactorConsiderationsDistanceProximity to nearest airport or cityClimateHot vs Cold weatherTerrainRural or urban settingTransportationShuttle services availability and convenienceLocal Community SupportAvailability of experienced local facilitators

It’s important to note other factors such as safety regulations in that area so that one can facilitate their focus on personal growth and spiritual healing.

When selecting for Location and Accessibility , it’s worth considering unique details such as retreat center facilities before making final decisions. Carefully researching several locations within a particular budget will ensure finding one that meets expectations.

An interesting side-note about the importance of location in Ayahuasca ceremonies: The Shipibo Conibo people located in the Amazon basin have been using ayahuasca for healing purposes for centuries. Their traditional way of medicine preparation involves sourcing ayahuasca from the forest where medicinal plants grow wild. Their belief is that only preparing Ayahuasca from their specific habitat provides proper vibrational energies required for healing.

If you’re not willing to trust strangers on the internet when it comes to choosing an Ayahuasca retreat, maybe stick to a basic yoga retreat instead.

Reputation and Reviews

An Ayahuasca Retreat’s Credibility and User Opinions play a significant role in selecting the best retreat for spiritual healing. Here are six points to consider when researching credibility and reviews:

Determine the accessibility of reviews on impartial websites.

Consider feedback from previous participants only, as many non-participants may not understand the experience fully.

Check for credentials, such as certification of facilitators, and safety protocols that adheres to the guidelines.

Be attentive to negative reviews; examine their accounts of why they had a negative experience.

Research the retreat’s reputation in terms of spiritual teaching quality, consistency and discipline in facilitating ceremony, etc.

Searching for comments across multiple social media platforms or online review forums will provide comprehensive feedback.

It is important to note that individual responses cannot serve as your guide when finalizing your retreat; each participant has a unique experience. Therefore, we suggest that you thoroughly explore other crucial factors before making any final decisions.

According to a recent report by CNN Travel News , Ayahuasca Retreats’ popularity continues to rise among tourists seeking natural treatments for mental health issues.

Whether you’re looking to heal your mind, body, or soul , these Ayahuasca retreats have got you covered like a psychedelic band-aid.

Healing Programs offered

An essential aspect to consider while selecting an Ayahuasca retreat is the variety of programs available for healing. These programs play a crucial role in your overall experience and success with Ayahuasca.

Some points to keep in mind about the healing programs offered include:

The number of ceremonies available for participants

Medical facilities and knowledge to provide medical assistance if necessary

Availability of experienced facilitators to guide you through the experience

The presence of pre and post-ceremony integration techniques

Any additional activities or therapies incorporated into the program

It’s also worth noting that some Ayahuasca retreats have unique offerings, such as specialized programs for trauma resolution or detoxification. Considering such options might help create a more personalized and beneficial experience.

One powerful practice that many retreats implement is the dieta – this involves adhering to a strict diet of plant-based foods before, during, and after ceremonies. This traditional practice aims to purify both body and mind to allow a deeper and more transformative experience.

History also shows that these healing programs have evolved over time based on scientific research, tradition, and personal experiences from past participants. As such, it’s essential to ensure that you pick an Ayahuasca retreat with programs specifically addressing your needs.

Choose wisely, because hallucinating in the wrong jungle can lead to an unwanted episode of Survivor: Ayahuasca Edition.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Ayahuasca Retreat for You.

When choosing an Ayahuasca retreat, it is important to consider a few key factors that will ensure a safe and positive experience specifically tailored to your needs.

Research the facilitators’ credentials carefully and only select those with extensive training and experience guiding Ayahuasca ceremonies.

Evaluate the retreat’s location and setting – ideally in a natural environment without distractions to ensure privacy and focus on personal growth.

Take into account the length of the retreat and the support provided both during and after for integration purposes.

It’s worth noting that while some retreats may offer luxury accommodations or group activities, these should not be prioritized over the quality of the Ayahuasca ceremony itself. Instead, prioritize experienced facilitators and a safe environment for optimal benefits.

Pro Tip: It’s recommended to avoid alcohol or drugs for at least two weeks before attending an Ayahuasca retreat to allow for better absorption of the medicine.

Machu Picchu

Stunningly situated high in the Andes Mountains and overlooking the Urubamba River valley, Machu Picchu is one of the must-sees on any world traveler’s bucket list. This Incan citadel built in the 15th century and then later abandoned is world-famous for its dry-stone walls made out of cut stone that "fit together without mortar so tightly that its cracks still can’t be penetrated by a knife blade."

The purpose behind its complex of plazas, palaces, temples, and homes that play on astronomical alignments still remains a mystery to scholars, but one thing is known for sure: The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu is truly one of the greatest archaeological wonders on Earth.

Sacred Valley

Stretching along the Urubamba River, from the Inca citadels of Pisac to Ollantaytambo, is Peru’s spectacular Sacred Valley. Known as "Vilcamayo" to the Incas, the Sacred Valley is home to pre-Colombian ruins, picturesque villages, amazing archaeological sites, huge saltpans, and incredible terraced mountainsides. If that weren’t enough to attract you, its combination of slightly higher temperatures and lower altitudes also makes the Sacred Valley the perfect place to acclimatize to the altitude of the Andes.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was a 15th-century, multi-day pilgrimage and ceremonial route that was re-discovered by Hiram Bingham in the early 1900s. The trail passes a number of Inca archaeological sites on the way, and travelers typically spend a day hiking the final section, which offers dramatic and changing views as you approach the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu.

In the heart of the land of the Incas is the city of Cusco (11,150′), whose name is taken from the Quechua word for "naval" or "center". Here, dramatic Spanish colonial architecture blends with solid Inca masonry in a harmony belying the area’s tumultuous history. Beautiful cathedrals abound, often built directly on top of ancient Inca temples. The juxtaposition of pagan and Christian art and architecture is fascinating, and the stonework of the Incas is unsurpassed by that of any other culture.

From Cusco to the gates of Machu Picchu, this private Peru walking and hiking adventure will immerse you in the best of Peru.

What To Expect

We take care of the details.

From providing accommodation options based on your budget, to recommendations on pre- or post-tour travels, to assisting you with booking regional air, to meeting you at the airport when you arrive: Boundless Journeys can help you with each step in planning your custom tour. We will seamlessly guide you, so that you can simply relax and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime in Peru.

The Altitude

Peru's geography is as diverse as its culture, with altitudes from sea level to over 22,000 feet. Most of our custom trips begin and end in Cusco, which is situated at 11,150 feet, in the foothills of the Andes, while our walks and hikes will take place at elevations of 8,000 feet to approximately 12,000 feet. There is time to move at a comfortable pace, allowing ourselves to adjust to the mountain air.

The mountainous areas of Peru have pronounced rainy and dry seasons, which are more responsible for the prevailing weather than seasonal temperature fluctuations. While the dry season lasts only from May through September, the most significant rains fall from January through March. Temperatures do not fluctuate as much, although nights do tend to be colder from May through September. Any time of year, dressing in layers is a good strategy, so that you can shed or add layers as the day heats and cools.

You may obtain more detailed weather information at www.weatherbase.com.

Peru is generally delightful for hiking from April through December. We avoid scheduling trips January through March, as this is the height of the rainy season. That being said, the hillsides and valleys tend to be greener in April, May and June. Later in the dry season, the fields turn golden and the campesinos harvest their crops.

In the Amazon River basin, daytime temperatures are fairly consistent year-round, although nighttime temperatures are a bit cooler from May to September. During those same months, the weather is driest, although this is a typical rainforest climate and it is not unusual for it to rain for a part of each day. It is fine to plan a trip at any time of year, although we do suggest avoiding the rainiest months of December through March.

When to Reserve

If you are planning to hike along the Inca Trail, It is important to reserve your trip early, as the Peruvian government has a permit system in place which strictly limits the number of hikers on the Inca Trail at any given time. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, and they can only be confirmed upon receipt of your deposit, as well as informing the government of your passport information to reserve a permit for you.

Now is the time to reserve, if you dream of hiking into Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail. Please contact our office with any questions regarding this.

Guides for our "Into the Amazon" Itinerary

Reserva Amazonica All excursions from the lodge are guided in small groups by one of Reserva Amazonica's trained professional Explorer Guides in English (other languages available upon request, and may be subject to additional charge). Their knowledge, interpretive skills, and local connections combine to provide understanding, insight, and an enhanced experience of the surrounding environment.

Dinners in Peru feature generous portions of beef, lamb, chicken, or fish, potatoes or rice, and fresh vegetables, such as locally grown avocados, summer squash, and olives. Delicacies such as roast cuy (guinea pig), alpaca, and ceviche (chilled marinated fish) are available on some menus. Breakfast generally features common continental offerings, cereals made from quinoa, as well as scrambled eggs and sausage. Delicious hearty soups are also a staple of Peruvian meals, and are often available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice, though choices tend to be more limited.

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Peru Rail runs train services to major tourist spots Cusco and Macchu Pichu, although services to other areas in the country may be limited. Bus services criss-cross the country and are generally inexpensive, although the conditions of different model buses can vary considerably.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, Environment, & Weather

Peru covers a total area of 1,285,216 square kilometres and has a coastline of 2,414 kilometres. There are three main geographical zones in Peru – the arid Costa region in the west, the mountainous Sierra in the centre, and the tropical Amazonia region to the east. The Andes Mountains in the Sierra region cover almost 40% of Peru’s surface area,

The climate in Peru varies from region to region, from the dry and arid climate of the coast, to the cold climactic conditions of the mountains, and the wet and humid climate of the Amazonia region. Depending on when and where you intend to travel, check the weather reports and dress accordingly.

World heritage sites

There are 12 properties in Peru listed on the World Heritage List. You can view the listed properties here: (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/pe). Peru’s listed properties include:

Chan Chan Archaeological Zone, the site of what was the largest pre-Columbian city in South America

Qhapaq Ñan (Andean Road System), the intricate ancient road system that once spanned the length of the former Incan empire

Manú National Park, which covers an area of 1.5 million hectares and holds some 850 species of bird species.

Festivals & Events

Contemporary Peruvian culture is a rich syncretic mix of both Spanish and pre-Columbian native influences, with many festivals and events showcasing the country’s unique cultural traditions. Catholicism is deeply rooted in Peruvian society, with many religious occasions dotting the calendar – notable examples include Fiesta de las Cruces, which features parades of elaborately decorated crucifixes, and Día de Santa Rosa de Lima, which celebrates the canonisation of Santa Rosa de Lima, the first-native-born American saint canonised by the Catholic Church. Native traditions live on through events such as Inti Raymi, which is held on the winter celebration, and is held in honour of the Incan sun god (‘Inti’). Other notable events include the Mistura Culinary Festival and the Fiesta de la Vendimia (‘The Wine Festival’).

Reading list

Lost City of the Incas: The Story of Machu Picchu and Its Builders, by Hiram Bingham III The Ancient Kingdoms of Peru, by Nigel Davies The Last Days of the Incas, by Kim MacQuarrie Peru: Elite Power and Political Capture, by John Crabtree and Francisco Durand.

Eating & Drinking

Peruvian food is a fusion of native ingredients and foreign culinary influences. The main staples of Peruvian cuisine are corn, potatoes, quinoa and legumes, while rice and meat also heavily feature in Peruvian diets. Like elsewhere on the South American Pacific coast, ceviche (a stew made from seafood and citrus juices) is immensely popular, and can be found in restaurants all over the Peruvian coast. Potatoes are an important source of sustenance in Peru, and is a key ingredient in many dishes, including causa (potato casserole) and papas a la huancaina (potatoes in spicy cheese sauce). The multicultural nature of Peru shines through in dishes such as lomo saltado, a dish created by Chinese immigrants and made out of steak, red onions, chilli and hot chips.

Pisco Sour, an alcoholic drink made from pisco (brandy), lime juice, syrup, and bitters, is the national drink of Peru. It is held in such high regard in the country that a national holiday is held in its honour, National Pisco Sour Day. Other popular beverages include chica morada (a non-alcoholic drink made from boiling purple corn with pineapple skin, cinnamon, cloves, and sugar) and chica de jora (a type of beer made from jora corn).

Health & Safety

As of writing, smartraveller.gov.au advises travellers to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling through Peru. Crime is a significant problem in some of Peru’s major cities, so keep your valaubles close and pay attention to your personal security. Also, it is advised to avoid hailing taxis in the streets, and only booking taxis from a hotel or restaurant, or via a secure app.

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Peru runs at 220V and 60Hz. Peru uses the Type A and Type C electric plug types, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

Argentina Dinosaur dig including Titanosaur small group tours

Well balanced, with a great group leader in John Pickrell. He was extremely informative and had great contacts so we saw behind the scenes at museums. We covered a lot of distance but with 2-3 nights in a number of places had plenty of free time to do your own thing.

All guides were excellent. Each had done a lot of research on dinosaurs before we arrived and had a good sense of what we were after.

Well balanced with city vs country, visits to remote dinosaur sites, town museums, a winery. The hands-on dinosaur dig and fossil preparation live-in at Lake Barraleas was superb and I could have spent more time there as we went out a lot. It was excellent with a great Argentinian team looking after us..

We were privileged to go where many tourists could not go but some of that was due to the presence of John Pickrell still we saw more and met more senior paleontologists that I had expected. All museums and other sites were a marvelous experience

What is the time zone?

Peru has a single time zone, Peru Standard Time (UTC-5). Daylight savings are not observed in Peru.

Is tipping customary in Peru?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. Tipping is appreciated in Peru, with small tips for hotel staff, tour guides, and servers in upscale restaurants. In restaurants, a tip of around 10% is customary.

What is the internet access like in Peru?

Wifi should be freely accessible in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in urban areas, though connection speeds can vary, particularly in more isolated areas.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Peru?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Peru. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Peru

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although some locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of soles in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Before departing on your trip, contact your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.

LSMS_HFPS_Conference_Banner_1

The World Bank Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) program is inviting researchers to submit extended abstracts for The Pulse of Progress: Harnessing High-Frequency Survey Data for Development Research in the Polycrisis Era . This one-day conference will take place on December 10, 2024, at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The conference will celebrate four years of the LSMS efforts in conducting longitudinal high-frequency phone surveys (HFPS) in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. Launched initially to address data and knowledge gaps related to the COVID-19 pandemic, these surveys facilitate routine monitoring of large-scale shocks and their socioeconomic impacts. They have had a transformative impact on national statistical and data systems , complementing existing in-person survey infrastructure with high frequency data collection on policy-relevant topics. To date, more than 100 survey rounds and 200,000 interviews have been completed across the six countries.

The conference aims to showcase applied research that leverages high-frequency phone survey data, including but not limited to the LSMS-HFPS, as the primary data source for addressing substantive questions in development economics and related fields.

We welcome extended abstracts (max. 800 words) for innovative research papers that utilize high-frequency phone survey data to study social and economic development issues. Submissions may cover a range of topics, including but not limited to:

Researchers should submit their proposals to: [email protected] . Early-career researchers are especially encouraged to apply. The submitter should indicate who will be presenting and confirm that the presenter can attend the conference in person. Travel and accommodation expenses for selected presenters will be covered by the World Bank.

We particularly encourage submissions using the LSMS-HFPS data, and to facilitate them, we are making available an open-access, harmonized dataset accessible here  (dataset) and here (stata syntax).

The dataset covers all LSMS-HFPS survey rounds and allows linkages at the household and individual levels over time. It can be integrated with the LSMS-Integrated Survey on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) series of nationally representative face-to-face household surveys in the same countries, including geo-variables and cluster locations. Interested authors can explore the scope of data on the LSMS webpage and access raw LSMS-HFPS and LSMS-ISA data through the World Bank Microdata Library .

Deadlines and important dates

  • Extended abstracts due :  July 12, 2024
  • Notification to authors:  August 16, 2024
  • Full paper draft due:  November 8, 2024
  • Event:  December 10, 2024 @ World Bank HQ in Washington, D.C.
