When it comes to the biggest of soccer teams coming to USA 2022 and the resulting schedule of summer friendlies, it doesn't get much better than Manchester City versus Bayern Munich at 81,441-seat Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 23.

The Frozen Tundra in Titletown USA has never hosted a soccer match in its 65-year history — mainly because Lambeau isn't able to accommodate a regulation-sized soccer pitch — but concessions have been made for what'll amount to a memorable night in the Badger State.

Other clubs have already announced plans — including Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Club América — while there are also international friendlies for the USWNT, USMNT and Mexico.

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

The FC Barcelona men’s first team will repeat the last season’s destination and travel once again to the United States for their preseason tour, BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023, in which they will play a total of four matches, all against European opposition. The first two games will be played in California; 22 July against Juventus in Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area, and on 26 July against Arsenal FC. The last two games will take place in Dallas Texas, for the clash with Real Madrid on 29 July and in Las Vegas where the tour will conclude with a game against AC Milan.

The US Summer Tour 2022 saw the Barça play on the East Coast with games in Miami and New York – as well as games in Las Vegas and Dallas – cities which hosted the majority of the Club’s institutional and social activities. This year the geographical emphasis has shifted to the West Coast where the majority of the Club’s activities will take place and where they will play three of their four scheduled games.

mini_3200x2000_web

The blaugranes’ debut on the tour will come on 22 July against Juventus in the Levis Stadium, Santa Clara in San Francisco, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. It will be the third time that Barça have played at the venue which has room for 68,000 fans following matches against Manchester United in 2015 and AC Milan in 2018. The most recent encounter between Barça and Juventus came in a friendly last season on tour, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The other games in California will come against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side on 26 July in the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, a venue opened in 2020 with a capacity of 70,000 and the ground where the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the NFL play their home matches. The fixture between the two sides will be their first in seven seasons, the last meeting having come in the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League in 2016 in which Barça won 2-0 in London and 3-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The game will also be the first on American soil between the two clubs.

Another Clásico in Arlington, Texas

The summer tour this year will also include one of the most awaited matches for the fans, the Clásico, the third meeting between Barça and Real Madrid in the USA. He game will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which has a capacity of 80,000 and is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The venue is one that Barça have visited twice previously; in 2011 against Manchester United and in 2018 against AS Roma. In their two previous games against Real Madrid in the US, Barça have come out on top both times: winning 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in 2017 and 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2022.

The Allegiant Stadium, which holds 65,000 fans, will be the venue for the final game of the tour for Xavi Hernández’s men against AC Milan, the third game on the west coast. The two teams have met on two previous occasions on US soil with a 2-0 win for Barça in 2003 in Washington and a 1-0 win for the Italians in 2018 in Santa Clara.

These four games during BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023 are part of the Soccer Champions Tour, a tournament put together by Sixth Street in collaboration with Legends and AEG, and in which, aside from Barça and their four opponents on the tour, Manchester United will also be participating.

The USA, a popular destination for blaugrana preseason

This summer’s tour will be the 14 th in FC Barcelona history to the USA (the first in 1937 was key in the Club’s survival), a country that has become a popular destination in recent years with tours taking place in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, the latter being a joint tour with the women’s team, as well as 2019 and 2022.

In fact, the North American market in a key priority for the globalisation and expansion the Barça brand. Football is undergoing a great period of growth in the USA that trend will hopefully continue with the next World Cup in 2026 taking place on North American soil. Furthermore, FC Barcelona opened a US office in New York in 2016 and continues its efforts to build a greater connection with its existing fans and win more followers and reach agreements with local sponsors to help develop even further the country’s footballing ecosystem.

Barcelona have already clocked up some miles this summer, having flown to Australia right after the 2021-22 campaign ended for a one-off match against the A-League Men All-Stars, which they won 3-2. They'll be starting their preseason tour closer to home with a short trip within Catalonia to play lower-league UE Olot. After that, they will be visiting the U.S. in late July with a preseason tour that so far encompasses two games against MLS sides and another two against European giants.

Barca will be facing Real Madrid in a Las Vegas Clasico before taking on Juventus as part of the Soccer Champions Tour. Xavi's side were then due to take on Jose Mourinho's Roma in their traditional curtain-raiser, the Joan Gamer Trophy match. However the supposed friendly against Jose Mourinho's team has become anything but after the Italian club withdrew from the fixture at short notice. With friction between the two parties mounting, Barca issued a strongly-worded statement that appeared to threaten their opponents with legal action over pulling out of the game "without reason." The have since drafted in Liga MX club Pumas to play the fixtures instead.

The game is a repeat of last season's Champions League round-of-16 clash (which Atletico won 2-1 on aggregate), albeit with slightly lower stakes this time round.

U.S. Women’s National Team Will Face Spain On Oct. 11 In Pamplona To Complete Enticing Two-Game European Tour

CHICAGO (September 12, 2022) – The U.S. Women’s National Team will face Spain on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at El Sadar Stadium in Pamplona (2:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. local on ESPN2) to finish a two-game European tour that starts against 2022 European champions England on Friday, Oct. 7 at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London (3 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. local on FOX).

In the quarterfinals of the 2022 UEFA Women’s EURO, Spain was just minutes away from knocking out host England before an 86th-minute equalizer from Ella Toone sent the match to overtime where England would win 2-1. The Lionesses then went on win the tournament in historic fashion at Wembley on July 31, defeating Germany 2-1 in overtime.

Spain was a pre-tournament favorite at the Euros but lost two of its top attacking players to injury prior to the start of the competition. Spain is ranked eighth in the world and England is currently fourth.

The match with Spain will be just the fourth-ever meeting between the teams and the second in Spain. The teams met for the first time ever in January of 2019, a 1-0 victory for the USA in Alicante, Spain, which was followed later in the year by a 2-1 U.S. victory in the Round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The teams most recently met at the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, a 1-0 U.S. victory which featured a dramatic 87 th minute game-winning header from Julie Ertz.

“I know Spain fell short of their goals at the Euros, but they are a fantastic team, one of the best in the world, with world class players all over the field and as a coaching staff, we are really looking forward to the challenges these two games will present for our team,” said U.S. head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Away matches against England and Spain are among the most difficult and high-profile friendlies a team can play and having those experiences will be valuable in many different ways for our continuing preparations for the World Cup.”

Spain is one of nine European teams that has qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as it won Group B over second-place Scotland with a record of 8-0-0 and 53 goals scored with zero against.

The USA qualified for both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics via its five-game run of wins at the Concacaf W Championship in Mexico that concluded with a 1-0 victory over Canada in the championship game on July 18.

Additional Notes:

  • El Sadar Stadium, named after a river near the stadium, is home to La Liga club Club Atlético Osasuna, which currently sits fourth in the standings. The stadium seats just under 24,000 fans.
  • Pamplona is in northern Spain, about 500 miles from the French border, about 270 miles northwest of Barcelona and 250 miles north of Madrid.
  • This will be the first-ever match for the USWNT in Pamplona, which is famous for the annual “Running of the Bulls” and is the hometown of U.S. Under-17 WYNT head coach Natalia Astrain.
  • Only four players who faced Spain at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup started for the USA in the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship title game in Mexico – goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, defender Becky Sauerbrunn, midfielder Rose Lavelle and forward Alex Morgan.
  • The two-game trip to Europe marks the sixth consecutive year in which the USA will travel to Europe for friendly matches and the most recent trip since April of 2021 when the U.S. faced Sweden and France.
  • Spain will be the third Top-10 opponent the USA is so far scheduled to face in 2022, having defeated then-sixth-ranked Canada in the Concacaf W Championship final with the October 7 match against No. 4 England upcoming.
  • The USA-England game at Wembley Stadium sold out of all general admission tickets in 24 hours and a crowd over 80,000+ is expected for the match.

How can I watch these soccer friendlies if I can’t attend in person?

If tickets are not your aim, many of these friendlies are still available via streaming or even on TV. For example, in the past, MLS All-Star Games aired on ESPN or FOX. Now that Apple has the MLS streaming rights, the MLS All-Star Game is available via MLS Season Pass. Other games are available via TV.

The full streaming schedule for the list of summer friendlies will be available on the full schedule of soccer games as those dates near.

How do these friendlies differ from other soccer matches in terms of rules and gameplay?

The main thing is that there is nothing of note on the line. For some, there are bragging rights. American-centric soccer fans would like to see the best of MLS compete against one of England’s top sides. Likewise, if there is ever a derby, there can be some international bragging rights, like Barcelona over Real Madrid based on USA friendlies.

Therefore, the gameplay is tamer than what some fans may be used to. Players are not diving into challenges or putting their bodies on the line as much as they would in a league or cup game during the proper season.

In terms of rules, there are some changes as well. One of the main ones is the lack of a limit on substitutions. Teams, particularly those out of Europe, want to interchange players to allow everyone to get some preseason action in. Also, games may not always end in draws. The MLS All-Star Game, for instance, will go to penalties if the game is tied. Other friendlies would settle with a draw, it truly depends on the competition.

Other ways to watch

Can’t make it to live preseason games in the USA this year, or out of your budget? You can still watch many of the soccer friendlies on TV or online. For instance, the schedule of upcoming games are always updated on our website. Many of the games may be available across streaming, too, including Fubo .

Why do teams play friendlies?

Friendlies serve two purposes for teams. First, they’re an ideal way to gain match fitness before a new season begins. For instance, European soccer seasons usually begin in August. Therefore, the games give coaches and managers an opportunity to play new star signings, as well as trying different formations. Second, the games generate more revenue for the teams and increase the size of the teams’ fan bases.

Historically, major soccer teams have been visiting the United States to play games for decades. For instance, Everton first played friendlies in the United States in 1956. Similarly, the first record of English teams playing in the United States was from 1905.

Nowadays, the summer soccer friendlies are an annual tradition in the United States.

Who plays in soccer friendlies?

Soccer friendlies provide a great opportunity for US fans to see their favorite international stars, sometimes in their own cities. Soccer friendlies also provide the chance for newer players to gain more experience.

For this reason, it’s up to each team’s manager (or coach) to decide who plays in the games. Some coaches prefer to give their youth stars an opportunity to get valuable playing time. Other managers like to build the team’s chemistry by playing the stars who will start the upcoming European season.

Do friendlies count?

Friendlies, also known as exhibition games, do not count for points. In spite of this, promoters sometimes entice clubs with a cup if they win their series of friendlies. For example, Relevent Sports launched the International Champions Cup as a way to make the friendlies more meaningful. Having said that, clubs rarely put much emphasis on winning these friendly competitions. At the end of the day, football teams play friendlies because the games grow fanbases and get teams ready for the new season. Preseason ranked games do not count for points.

You may wonder, what is a friendly in soccer? When soccer clubs first originated in the 1800s, there were no leagues or competitions. So, teams would play against each other in a friendly game. It wasn’t until 1888 when the Football League was created that teams faced each other in competitive games.

Copa America + Summer Champions Tour This Summer

' src=

Get ready, US soccer fans! It will be an amazing summer with Copa America 2004, the Summer Champions Tour and some high-profile tours by Arsenal , Liverpool , Real Madrid , Barcelona and Manchester United .

The headline has to be Copa America. And ahead of this summer’s Copa America tournament, a series of international friendlies will be held in the US as warm-up games before the competition kicks off on June 20. There is a FIFA international window between June 3-11 and I expect most of the games to take place then.

Argentina and captain Lionel Messi are expected to play two matches in the U.S. in June. The defending Copa América and World Cup champions will visit Chicago’s Soldier Field and FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland before their tournament opener on June 20 in Atlanta.

Reports out of Argentina suggest that Argentina will meet Ecuador in Chicago, with either Guatemala or Honduras facing the world champions at FedEx Field.

The United States men’s national team ( USMNT ) is expected to play a high-profile friendly against Brazil in Orlando on June 5th. This would be the first meeting between the two countries since 2018, when goals by Roberto Firmino and Neymar gave the five-time world champions a 2-0 friendly win in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

After the Brazil match, the USMNT is set to play Colombia in a friendly match ahead on June 8 at FedExField in Landover, Maryland.

Brazil has also scheduled a friendly against Mexico on June 8 at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field in College Station, TX. Mexico is also expected to play Uruguay on June 5 with venue TBD.

For tour games we have Arsenal and Manchester United returning to the U.S. while Liverpool is hitting US shores for the first time since 2019.

The Champions Tour will see five of the world’s most iconic clubs: AC Milan , FC Barcelona, Chelsea , Manchester City , and Real Madrid CF, play friendly games in host stadiums across New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Orlando, Baltimore, and Charlotte.

European Soccer Leagues Insist They Have No Plans for Games in the US. A Lawsuit Could Change That

Leaders of top European soccer leagues say have no plans to take games to the United States

GENEVA (AP) — Leaders of top European soccer leagues say they have no plans to take games to the United States, though acknowledged that could change pending a lawsuit in Manhattan .

FIFA has shifted its long-time policy of blocking domestic league games being played on the territory of another member federation by withdrawing this month from an antitrust suit filed by U.S. promoter Relevent Sports. The suit is also against the U.S. Soccer Federation.

If league games could be organized abroad, European leagues and clubs — especially in England and Spain — could expect offers from the United States, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

“It’s not part of our current plans, it really isn’t,” English Premier League CEO Richard Masters said on Friday at a news conference after the 34-nation European Leagues group met in London.

Still, Masters said uncertainty over the court case meant “no one quite knows exactly what is happening but the door looks ajar potentially in America, at any rate, for matches abroad.”

European Leagues managing director Jacco Swart said taking games abroad was “definitely not on the agenda” of the group yet.

“I’m not saying never but currently it’s not a point on our agenda,” said Swart, a former executive at the Netherlands league, who noted U.S. sports leagues routinely schedule games in London and other European cities.

FIFA forcefully blocked a 2018 plan by Spain’s La Liga to take a game involving Barcelona, then still with Lionel Messi in the team, and Girona to Miami where Messi now plays.

The FIFA policy is less clear now, and Masters lamented how Europe’s leagues had poor relations with the Zurich-based organization.

There was no “meaningful dialogue” with FIFA, Masters said, while UEFA gave a seat on its decision-making executive committee to the leagues group.

“There is a chasm really between the style of consultation with leagues between UEFA and FIFA, where there is none,” the Premier League official said.

FIFA’s first monthlong Club World Cup will kick off in June next year, with 12 European clubs among the 32 teams playing in the United States. Real Madrid and Manchester City qualified to be in it, but American-owned Manchester United and Barcelona did not .

Tens of millions of dollars in prize money paid by FIFA risks further widening wealth gaps among European clubs, and adds up to seven more games on player workload for teams that reach the final.

The 2024-25 season will add more congestion to the calendar. The Champions League and second-tier Europa League expand with four extra teams , for a total of 36, playing eight games instead of six before the knockout rounds. Those games block two new midweek slots in January.

Swart said pressure on players and the soccer calendar was coming from international games, not domestic ones.

“It’s getting to a tipping point,” Masters said, warning about “players’ ability to perform at their best in competitions they want to play in.”

The 20-team, August-to-May format of the Premier League has stayed the same since 1995. Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A also have 20 teams each playing 38 games. Germany's Bundesliga has 18 teams.

“What has changed over the last few decades,” Masters said, “is the march, really, of international and regional football competitions.”

The European Leagues groups wants a formal working agreement with FIFA, and on Friday called for a “more transparent, objective and non-discriminatory set of regulations to govern professional football.”

‘Maybe I’m not ready to be a mum yet’: Ons Jabeur on her grand slam dream

The Wimbledon defeat and her anguish underlines the difficult choices athletes must make between work and family

A s the best tennis players in the world converged on the lawns of Wimbledon last summer, it soon became clear that Ons Jabeur was soaring. She produced the best tennis of her life as she tore through a brutal run of grand slam champions – Petra Kvitova, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka – to reach her second final in a row. She then entered the final heavily favoured to become the first African and Arab tennis player to win a single grand slam title.

Instead, she froze .

Suddenly, with a title on the line, Jabeur could barely play at all. Her feet were rooted to the turf and she struggled to clear the net with basic rally forehands. It was excruciating. The Tunisian crumbled in straight sets to the unseeded Marketa Vondrousova, her record in grand slam finals falling to 0-3. It was easy to attribute Jabeur’s nerve-stricken display to the extra weight she carries on her shoulders as a reference for hundreds of millions of people from her continent and region, but the reality was much more personal.

“That loss was very difficult because it was connected to me being a mother and having a family. So that was an extra sadness for me,” says Jabeur as we speak in a small room tucked inside the Caja Mágica on the eve of the Madrid Open.

Jabeur, whose career-high ranking of No 2 is the highest an Arab or African tennis player has reached, has always been a proponent of loudly vocalising her goals, and at Wimbledon last year they were particularly significant: she had envisioned herself winning the title and then taking time away from the sport soon afterwards to have her first child with her husband, Karim Kamoun, who is also her physio.

That scenario vanished with her defeat. In her recent documentary, This is Me, Jabeur explained that she and Kamoun cried “like babies” after the match, their anguish underlining the difficult choices female athletes must make between work and family. For now, the 29-year-old remains determined to continue chasing the dream of finally lifting a grand slam title.

“It is what it is,” says Jabeur. “I think it was meant to be. Maybe I’m not ready to be a mum yet. Hopefully I can get that title because I really, really want it. Obviously now coming from a couple of very difficult months, I will try to get there and hopefully one day I can be a mum and bring my kid to the tour. I’m not getting any younger and I feel like it’s important that I want to come back and have my kid with me on tour.”

A tearful Ons Jabeur after her defeat to Marketa Vondrousova in Wimbledon final

It took many months for Jabeur to even begin to digest the Wimbledon defeat, the most painful loss of her career, and the resurfacing of a chronic knee injury this year has further torpedoed her form. Jabeur began in Madrid with a dire 3-7 record this year and she had considered taking a break for the first weeks of the clay season.

“I was in a super-bad zone and I think I couldn’t handle another loss,” Jabeur says. “But I was challenging myself, I was like: ‘OK, I’ve never been in this situation before,’ in being a top player and losing a lot of matches. But I said, also looking at some quotes and everything, for me it’s good to dare to fail.

“I think if you’re a coward, you will not go and try. I didn’t want to be a coward and I wanted to try, even losing but taking the loss with pride. That was one thing that I was proud of myself for doing, even though I had a lot of negative thoughts. But it happens, I do accept these negative thoughts and turn them into positive ones.”

Beyond her varied, wildly entertaining playing style and the trailblazing that has defined her career, Jabeur has made some notable moves off-court. She is an executive committee member of the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the contentious player association co-founded by Novak Djokovic, and this year, Jabeur became a global ambassador of the World Food Programme (WFP). One of her first campaigns was to address hunger and famine in Gaza.

“I’ve lived with the war for 75 years,” says Jabeur. “Maybe some people don’t know that this war going on for a lot of time. I really feel bad about what’s happening in Gaza for the Palestinian people not even having food and definitely the hospitals as well are not well equipped for injuries. I deleted social media at some time because I couldn’t look at the videos any more. It was too much and it was affecting me.

“I think in that video in Cancun , it really got the best of me. It’s frustrating to see what’s happening but I try to help as much as I can with my platform and with being the World Food Ambassador as well. I wish the world could see what’s really happening because it is terrible. I don’t know how many people are not speaking about it.”

The global nature of tennis means that it is often intertwined with geopolitics, as illustrated by how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has affected events on the tennis court . The WTA released a public statement following Hamas’ attacks in Israel on October 7 but said nothing further as the Israeli air attacks and ground incursion into the territory has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians. Jabeur says that it has not been a common talking point on tour.

after newsletter promotion

“No, Palestine, it wasn’t discussed a lot, obviously,” she says. “But I’ve seen some players coming up to me, giving me their support and wanted to know what’s really happening in the world. Everybody knows and, again, everybody is wishing [for] peace. I wish they can speak about it more, but, you know, politics is politics and obviously so many people are scared to get involved.”

Earlier this month the WTA announced that its flagship year-end event, the WTA Finals, would be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The decision has received significant criticism due to the Kingdom’s laws against LGBTQ+ people, its repression of dissenting opinions and the billions of dollars spent on sport and entertainment to sanitise its image. Just weeks after the ATP announced a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, PIF’s branding is already ubiquitous across the tournament grounds and courts.

Jabeur has consistently been effusive about the prospect. She first travelled to Saudi Arabia for Misk Global Forum , an annual youth forum, and last year she played the first women’s tennis match there with Aryna Sabalenka, the world No 2. Jabeur also now has a clothing contract with Kayanee, a Saudi women’s brand. She sees the prospect of competing in Saudi Arabia as important to her goal of using her success to inspire other Arab players, especially women.

“I am always honestly biased in this position here and the decision they took,” Jabeur told me during a press conference on Saturday. “I’m very happy to be there. As an Arab woman, I’m very proud some things are moving there in Saudi. Obviously people could have different opinions. Where it bothers me is that when some people, they don’t know what’s really happening there, and are super ignorant about what’s really happening in Saudi. So like Princess Reema said, you should come to Saudi, be there, and judge yourself.

Ons Jabeur plays a backhand against Jelena Ostapenko during her win in Madrid on Monday.

She continues: “If they really don’t like it, they would share their honest opinion. We are not telling them to say you really like it or anything. Obviously I wish to see better comments. For me, it always has been about chances, and going there not just to play tennis matches but to give the opportunity especially for younger women to see their role models from before and to believe that they can achieve anything.”

As quickly as form can deteriorate in tennis, players can also swiftly find their way again. In her first appearance at the Madrid Open since she won her biggest title here in 2022, Jabeur is into the quarter-finals after she dismantled Jelena Ostapenko, the ninth seed, 6-0, 6-4 on Monday in her third win of the tournament. She had not won consecutive matches all year.

In order to be successful and an authentic example for aspiring younger players, Jabeur believes it is important to be as open and honest in these difficult moments as she is when the winds are calm.

“It is a great life, but sometimes it’s travelling all the time, missing your family, getting sick in Madrid, getting a knee injury. There is a lot of struggle but how do you get through these struggles? How do you get through these difficult times? Because these difficult times do exist,” she says. “I’m not saying it’s impossible to succeed, but if you go through this you become stronger, you become more patient.”

Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton eligible for 2025 Ryder Cup despite joining LIV Golf

ROME, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 29: Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton of Team Europe celebrate on the 12th hole during the Friday morning foursomes matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club on September 29, 2023 in Rome, Italy. (Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images)

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, both members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team at Marco Simone last fall, are still eligible for the 2025 team at Bethpage Black under the DP World Tour’s current guidelines. The pair left for LIV Golf earlier this year but have a pathway to be on the team, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings told reporters .

The newly appointed Kinnings dispelled previous concerns — which were even voiced by Rory McIlroy — that Rahm and Hatton’s defections to LIV Golf might prevent them from representing Europe in Long Island, N.Y., next year.

Rahm and Hatton must simply remain DP World Tour members to be eligible for the Ryder Cup, Kinnings said. That means the pair will incur fines every time they tee it up in a LIV Golf event, but if they pay those penalties and play in the minimum number of DP World Tour events each calendar year to retain membership (four), they can still be on the team.

“I think there’s been a slight misconception because the reality is, under the current rules, if a player is European, and is a member of the DP World Tour, and abides by the rules as they currently are — so if you don’t get a release and you accept the sanctions — there is no reason why players who’ve taken LIV membership and maintained DP World Tour membership, could not a) qualify and or b) be available to for selection,” the CEO said.

The change from 2022

Rahm and Hatton’s eligibility situation is in direct contrast with that of several other LIV players who chose to withdraw their DP World Tour membership last year. Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia resigned from the tour last year, effectively ending their Ryder Cup careers to avoid paying large fines. Meanwhile, Rahm and Hatton (and other European LIV members such as Adrian Meronk and Thomas Pieters) have kept their memberships.

According to The Telegraph’s James Corrigan , Kinnings consulted the DP World Tour rules department to ensure that Rahm and Hatton could play in the four required events while also serving their LIV-related penalties. Since LIV Golf plays 14 events each year, Rahm and Hatton need to serve a 14-week ban to carry out their suspensions. But instead of serving those suspensions at the end of the LIV season, Rahm and Hatton can serve them whenever LIV has an off-week but the DP World Tour does not, as revealed by Kinnings. As long as both players pay the appropriate fines — which will likely total more than $1 million each — they will be eligible to either qualify for or be selected for the European Ryder Cup team.

“It’s not a loophole,” Kinnings said. “Rules are for all of the membership and it’s important for people to know how those apply and they apply to every member.”

What are the future implications?

Not every player will want to battle constant fines and suspensions to maintain their Ryder Cup eligibility, but the news reveals that joining LIV Golf doesn’t necessarily prevent pros from teeing it up in the biennial match-play event on either side — LIV’s Brooks Koepka made the United States team last year.

Although the Ryder Cup requirements were not changed, Kinnings was willing to read between the lines of the DP World Tour rules to ensure Rahm and Hatton have a pathway to Luke Donald’s 2025 team. That effort is noteworthy as the professional game continues to operate in a fractured system, and the road to unification remains murky.

Rahm and Hatton were critical parts of Donald’s plan at Marco Simone — Hatton was 3-0-1 and Rahm 2-0-2. The duo played together in foursomes twice, winning the first match of the Ryder Cup and halving their Saturday game.

VERNIER, Switzerland (AP) — Carlos Rodriguez protected his yellow jersey through a rain-soaked final stage Sunday to win the six-day Tour of Romandie for the biggest race victory of his career.

Four previous winners in the French-speaking region of Switzerland went on to win that season’s Tour de France, including Chris Froome in 2013. Rodriguez placed fifth in cycling’s marquee event last year and won a stage.

Rodriguez started Sunday’s flat stage that looped round the suburbs of Geneva — won in a sprint finish by Dorian Godon — with a seven-second lead he took by placing third in a mountain stage Saturday.

The 23-year-old Ineos Grenadiers rider kept that winning margin over runner-up Aleksandr Vlasov, the 2022 Romandie winner. Third-placed Florian Lipowitz was third, trailing Rodriquez by nine seconds.

Godon sealed his second stage win this week, edging Simone Consonni with Dion Smith third.
